Six of Crows- Chapter 21 (Leigh Bardugo)
Busy life, isn't it?
If Kaz is seventeen, and joined the Dregs in twelve,
Tumblr media
he'd have five years to PLAN and achieve all that. Except he wasn't arrested since fourteen,
Tumblr media
so unless he fucked up big after one of his big targets already done, we have three years only. All while gaining trust of his boss and co-workers, making a name for himself, recruiting useful people he needs to get to know first and organizing such endeavours as rebuilding a whole fucking harbour, when already owning at least a part of the Crow Club?
Tumblr media
This is a world of liars, merchants and cheats. It should take some time before he establishes himself enough for others to be willing to deal with him in a way ALL the risk won't be on his side.
Kaz allegedly managed way too much in a way too short time.
He either should've been written as older, a child from already established family or have an admitted supernatural time-managing skill alongside his superbrain and miraculous amount of luck. Not even being a prodigy guarantees success. Just look at the amount of failed "gifted" children on this hellsite.
He's so "lucky" he's hard to take seriously as an underdog he's presented as. If he can do so much with so little in such a short time without memorable setbacks, he "doesn't have it so bad".

NSFW warning
Snippet from Kaz's eventual seduction of Matthias, as part of the Key-ring fics I have going ~
Kaz’s gaze locked with his, “Oh?
“I was thinking,” Matthias ran his hand up his partner’s thigh, sliding under the fabric on his hips and through the other side of it. His underwear bulged with Matthias’s intrusion, the heat of Kaz’s skin like a blessing on Matthias’s palm, “I was wondering why your eyes had hypnotized me so easily. No demon before you had much luck in tempting me, but for some reason I'm willing to fall to my knees for whatever your shark’s gaze commands of me. I tried so hard to hate you, and here you are. The object of my fantasies. How did you do it?”
Matthias turned his hand, tugging lightly at the hem of the black fabric in his way. A wordless question, but one he wanted to ask all the same. They were going at Kaz’s pace and only his. Matthias would lose more than just his sanity if even a single sour note tainted this moment between them, he wanted to make sure Kaz felt all the power he had right now. Plus, it was impolite to assume.
His skin was soft. Much softer than Matthias had expected. It felt downy smooth against the calluses on his knuckles. He had known Kaz was pale, but seeing it under the curl of his coat collar was much different then seeing it displayed before him so openly. Matthias could see the entirety of his partner's ruddy blush, from the dip of his navel to the creeping climb up his neck until it reached the curves of his ears.
Kaz looked to the side, and only then did Matthias realize what it meant. Kaz was blushing. Before he could comment on it, Kaz looked back at him, “Truthfully?”
Matthias nodded slowly.
“I dunno,” Kaz shrugged, biting his lip, “But I could tell you didn’t belong there. When I saw you in your cell, I just… wanted to get you free. Whatever it took.”
His words were jarringly kind for how willing he was to believe Matthias would do him in only moments before. Kaz Brekker was like that, though. He was an abandoned well, full of jagged rocks and sharp heights only to house a soothing pool of spring water at the bottom. Though Matthias had not fallen with the intention of ever landing, he had still been surprised at how safe he felt in Kaz’s depths. Mayhaps because he was a good swimmer.
Matthias pressed another soft kiss at the crux of Kaz’s groin, where his thigh met his hips and… lower. That forbidden heat between his legs. Or, no. It wasn’t forbidden, especially not when Matthias was about to put his mouth on it. And Kaz had seemed very eager about that if the state of his underclothes were to be believed. The crotch was sopping wet, so close to Matthias’s face now that he almost felt like he could taste it if he just parted his lips a bit. And then he remembered that, well, that was exactly what his goal was. To taste. So Matthias leaned forward and licked a long stripe up Kaz’s clothed cunt. His boss gasped loudly, body trembling like he had been dunked in ice water without warning.
And fuck, Matthias had to dart a hand under himself to strangle his cock, because the wretched thing almost came at the sound. It played in Matthias’s head over again, breathy in his ear like a whisper. Matthias dug his tongue in further, unable to resist as the taste of Kaz flooded his mouth. It was tangy, sweet and heady with lust. It also tasted of soap, slightly, as everything was muffled by the cotton of Kaz’s panties. The bland taste of cloth suddenly became the most frustrating barrier Matthias had ever encountered. He tugged impatiently at the fabric again, requesting permission to get them off. As beautiful as Kaz looked in them, they had become more of a hindrance than anything else.
Kaz swore, sinking a naked hand into Matthias’s hair and yanking just shy of too hard, “Fuck, just take them off already.”
That was all the permission Matthias needed, and he pulled them down without a second thought.

On a slightly different note, after being in this fandom for a while and having time to think about it, I genuinely do think the scene on the boat where Inej lashes out at Kaz WAS cruel. Like, I get why we deny it, but it's kind of messed up to pretend that it isn't. Imagine if a friend said something like that to you, about something that painful, hm? Inej just finished an insane suicide mission freshly stabbed in the side. She's often mirrored with Kaz, in that they are both so utterly traumatized. Their relationship is built on cruelty and distance (from Kaz), as it is built on help and friendship. She can make a mistake, yes? While, yes, people will use this one example of Inej being shitty to pretend like she's the worst, also sanitizing every little thing she does into it all being perfect, is just another type of misogyny, yes?

Analysing my favourite lines from Six of Crows chapter by chapter: Chapter 3
As before, if there are any famous/popular lines missing it’s not because I don’t like them it’s just because I have nothing more to add to the analyses/ideas already present about them in the fandom. And if there are quotes that I haven’t analysed that’s just because I wanted to include it as a favourite quote but didn’t have anything to say explanation-wise.
This is a long chapter, so I’ll see how this goes and maybe split it into two parts.
“It would have been easy to make peace. Kaz could have told Jesper that he knew he wasn’t dirty, reminded him that he'd trusted him enough to make him his only real second in a fight that could have gone badly wrong tonight."
- this is really important for me because it tells us so much about Kaz and Jesper’s relationship in so few words, as well as telling us about the characters individually as well. Kaz trusts Jesper but he can’t tell him that and keeps him at arms length: we understand that Kaz has intimacy and/or commitment issues in both platonic and romantic relationships (since at this point in time the nature of their relationship hasn’t been explored but is presented as platonic, and Kaz had not been specifically stated to have a romantic interest this early on we as the reader make early assumptions). The specificity of the verb “knew” is SO important to me as well, because we have just seen Kaz have Big Bolliger shot in the stomach on the suspicion he was dirty based on a hunch about him going to a different cafe for breakfast but he ‘knows’ with complete certainty that Jesper is absolutely trustworthy. So within barely a paragraph of Kaz’s first POV chapter we understand that Jesper, even if their relationship is complex or rocky, is incredibly important to him and that he has considerable faith in him. The choice to not “make peace”, however, even though “it would have been easy” tells us that Kaz either feels the active need to keep Jesper at a distance or is incapable of expressing the closeness he feels in their friendship. Obviously later we’re able to learn that these are both true in their own way, but the importance of it in this moment is that we are immediately tuned in to Kaz’s fear of emotional connection and invested in understanding why this is, or exactly what he struggled with. Six of Crows is a novel I’d consider to be well balanced between plot-driven and character-driven, but I definitely think that these opening chapters are very character driven so this kind of set up is what pulls us into the book and makes us desperate to keep reading.
“ ‘Another bribe?’
‘I’m a creature of habit’
‘Lucky for you, I am too’ ”
“If you couldn’t walk out by yourself through Ketterdam after dark, then you might as well hang a sign around your neck that read “soft” and lie down for a beating” - I don’t know that I can coherently explain this I just love it; the worldbuilding??? the start of this brilliant presentation of the city as effectively it’s own character, which is one of my favourite things Bardugo does in her descriptions of Ketterdam?? The character implications about Kaz??? The way it ties into his initial judgements of Wylan!???? Perfection
“He realised he felt… Saints, he almost felt hopeful. Maybe he should see a medik” - I just love this so much, it’s so funny and it’s so quintessentially Kaz, I absolutely adore it
“Usually, he liked the quiet. In fact, he would’ve happily sewn most people’s lips shut” - we should talk about this quote more as a fandom, you know, because it’s brilliant and it’s so funny and again it’s just so brilliantly Kaz in the opening pages of his perspective we get so much information about his worldview and understand him to be quite a humorous character despite the initial appearance of him from Inej’s POV. As the novels go on we see the others notice his jokes more often, but in that introductory chapter it was incredibly important that the reader received the same image of Kaz that the Black Tips did, so now we get to be introduced to the closest thing to a real version of Kaz. I think there’s still a prevalent understanding that we’re seeing a mask, but this feels more real than Dirtyhands does… if that makes sense? I could be rambling about nonsense
"He'd heard other members of the gang say she moved like a cat, but he suspected cats would sit attentively at her feet to learn her methods" - this is just such a brilliant description of what Inej can do, it gives us such a clear image without having to overexplain anything and it also introduces us to this idea of Kaz putting her on a pedestal.
' "And what god do you serve, then?"
"Whichever will grant me good fortune"
"I don't think gods work that way,"
"I don't think I care," '
"He didn't see her go, only sensed her absence" - I can't explain it but something about this is so achingly romantic to me.
"But the fact that she could simply erase herself bothered him. She didn't even have a scent. All people carried scents, and those scents told stories -" - It wasn't until someone asked me to make a post about this quote that I really thought about it and realised why it has always stuck out to me. You can see the post on my page if you're interested, but in essence I think it's really important that Kaz struggles with any sense of permanence, so the idea that the one person he cares about more than anything else in the world could vanish so completely, as though she never even existed in the first place, is genuinely frightening - especially to a boy who several times in these novels fears that he has begun to hallucinate. Kaz seems very aware that he's on the edge of something he identifies as going mad, and the concept of visual and auditory hallucinations - Jordie's voice in his head, the panic at thinking he must have hallucinated when he first sees a Tidemaker walk through a wall, the immediate fear of being attacked by a ghost, etc - is something that constantly chases him. Kaz has also spent the last 8 years of his life living in a world that continued on as though his brother never existed, the salt in the wound being that not even Rollins remembers them, so the awareness of that happening to Inej, someone he has come to care for in a way that is entirely new and incredibly overwhelming for him - "there would be no grand funerals for them, no marble markers to remember their names" "What will you leave behind, but corpses to be burned on the Reaper's Barge?" "Out to the Reaper's Barge for burning, like all paupers go" - is a deeply upsetting. This then becomes a parallel with Kaz specifically noting that he can smell soap on her in the Crooked Kingdom Bathroom Scene; in this moment she us cemented so strongly in view and becomes the tether between Kaz and his sanity by continuing to so obstinately exist in a world that doesn't seem to want her to.
"Ghosts, Kaz thought. A boy's fear, but it came with absolute surety. Jordie had come for his vengeance at last" - oh my goodness there's so much to unpack here. I have talked about this a bit before, I think it was in my (very long) post about the potential for Wylan and Kaz to become each other, but it is SO important to look at this quote and remember that when we first read it we haven't the faintest idea who Jordie is or what happened to him. With the ousting of Big Bolliger and all the talk about your gang being your family and that even if you're a liar and a thief, you don't lie to or steal from your own gang, my initial assumption upon reading this was that Jordie had once been in a gang with Kaz, one of them had betrayed the other, and it had ended with Kaz murdering him. But, of course, this is very far from the truth and this tells us so much heart-breaking information about the fact that Kaz blames himself for what happened to them. He wonders later what might have happened to them if he hadn't insisted they go and find the magician that was the first step leading them to Rollins and to Jordie's death, but we never get anything about Kaz blaming himself quite as outrightly as this, the rest of it is usually just implied. So why show us this now? I would argue because this is how Kaz genuinely feels and in the moment he thinks it he is too terrified, confused, and to some extent concerned for his sanity to push the feeling away. Everything we see beyond this point id the construct that he has convinced himself is how he feels: that it's Rollins' fault. Obviously Rollins is at least partially to blame for Jordie's death, but if I may quote myself from a previous post It's the city that kills him, Rollins is just the weapon it chooses. Jordie even says it himself - "The city's winning now, but you'll see who wins in the end". Kaz's genuine belief is that Jordie's death is his fault, but he is in far too fragile a mental state to cope with that truth (and when I say truth I mean the that it's the truth he believes that, not that it;s the truth it's his fualt because he was jsut a nine-year-old who wanted to see a magician that's a more than innocent act and, again, he was nine) so he instead exists within a façade that he has built for himself - even on top of the one he's built for everyone else. We also see a hatred of the feeling towards blaming Jordie later on in the novels, and this is incredibly important. It's almost as if the idea that it's his fault isn't even the truth, but that's a façade to overcome the ultimate horror of seeing Jordie as accountable for it all - "What do you think my forgiveness looks like Jordie?". But ultimately, this is still the warped view of the world instilled in Kaz and so many of the other citizens of Ketterdam, possibly Kerch as a whole, arguably placing the city and its infrastructure as the ultimate villain rather than the tools of it. (Wherein the tools are Rollins and Van Eck).
"The phantom was upon him, and he felt the sharp jab of a needle in his neck. A ghost with a syringe?" - This is just so funny I love it so much I think I've read SOC and CK near to twenty times each now and this still makes me laugh every damn time.
I'm going to split this into two parts from here because this is the splitting point in the chapter and this is already a pretty long post. Thanks so much for reading this, sorry it's been a while for me to post it. I'm loving this line-by-line analysis series already (I know this is only the second post but I'm still excited) but they do take a long time to put together, particularly because at this time I don't currently have an annotated version of either book. Although I am planning to buy fresh copies for the purposes of annotating them when I get the opportunity, I currently don't have my ideas recorded anywhere except this account so whenever I write a post I'm working entirely from memory beyond the actual quotes themselves (and sometimes including them too haha) or even coming up with new ideas as I write. Thanks so much for reading, I hope you enjoyed it, and if you have any questions please keep sending them in I know I haven't responded to any for a little while but I love getting them and I am working through my inbox, if a bit slowly :)

I think a lot about what the way they talk can tell us about our Crows. For example, interjections.
Unsurprisingly, Nina and Inej use all variants with Saints (Saints; All Saints; For Saints' sake) and Wylan uses Ghezen (Ghezen; Ghezen and his works). Matthias of course has Djel (Djel; Sweet Djel; For Djel's sake).
Now comes the interesting part. Jesper uses Saints, many times in his own creative way (Saints; All Saints; For Saints' sake; All Saints and your Aunt Eve; All Saints and the donkeys they rode in on) and (!) he also uses Ghezen (Sweet Ghezen). It's quite obvious that Jesper adopted Ghezen during his long stay in Ketterdam, but since he uses Saints much more often, it seems like something he got from his father as a child, since Colm also said many similar things in CK (All Saints; Saints; For Saints' sake). Do they recognise Saints on Wandering Isle? Probably.
And then there's Kaz. What do you think of his interjections? Have you noticed or thought about it? Kaz out loud never used any! Not Ghezen, not Saints, not Djel. There is only one exception where the interjection was part of his inner monologue.
Chapter 3, SoC:
"As Kaz headed down one of the little canals that would take him past Fifth Harbour, he realised he felt – Saints, he almost felt hopeful."
Oh yes, Kaz in his head when no one could hear him automatically used Saints and it wasn't because he wanted to mentally tease Inej about her Saints. I think the moment he felt almost hope, something from his past slipped out of the dark parts of his mind where he buried everything related to his family. Do we know for sure that Ghezen is the only god the Kerch people know? What about people from the countryside? Do they honour the god of industry, commerce and trade, or someone else who is closer to them? Who remembers where Marya Hendriks was kept? The Church of Saint Hilde. In addition, we also know two Kerch saints, Sankta Margaretha and Sankt Emerens. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Nina stared. “You’re Grisha. You’re an Inferni.” Kuwei nodded. “Jurda parem was a mistake. My father was trying to find a way to help me hide my powers. He was a Fabrikator. A Grisha, as I am.”
Six of Crows- Chapter 37 (Leigh Bardugo)
" ... the Black Heretic, the Darkling who created the Shadow Fold. It was a mistake, an experiment born of his greed, maybe his evil. I don’t know. ... "
Shadow and Bone- Chapter 5
But power was exactly what Aleksander had found, tucked away in this basement—his grandfather’s journals, the records of his experiments. They had become his obsession. He’d been sure that he could do what Ilya Morozova had done, and so he’d tried. The result was the Fold.
Rule of Wolves- Chapter 21
“A Grisha can have only one amplifier. You told me that yourself.” “Morozova’s amplifiers are different.” I gaped at him. “There’s another like the stag?” “They were meant to be used together, Alina. They are unique, just as we are.” ... " ... I know the truth in your heart. The loneliness. The growing knowledge of your own difference.” He leaned in closer. “The ache of it." ... “There are no others like us, Alina,” he whispered. “And there never will be.”
Siege and Storm- Chapter 3
“Morozova was the Bonesmith, one of the greatest Fabrikators who ever lived, and a man who tested the very boundaries of Grisha power, but he was also just a man with a wife. She was otkazat’sya, and though she loved him, she did not understand him.”
Ruin and Rising- Chapter 10
One of the essential tenets of Grisha theory was “like calls to like,” but Morozova seemed to believe that if the world could be broken down to the same small parts, each Grisha should be able to manipulate them. Are we not all things? he demanded, underlining the words for emphasis.
Ruin and Rising- Chapter 4
How an explanation from sympathetic narrator makes all the difference...

From the coming third chapter of "The Emotional Hierarchy of Trust: An Excuse to Buy Lingerie", in Nina's POV
"Wylan dipped his head into the curve of Kaz's shoulder like he couldn't help but nuzzle closer when the chance was offered. Nina didn't blame him. Even the barest brush of skin against hers was white hot and saccharine. When in love with a boy who was too far to reach, every step forward felt like a new experience. Kaz made her aware of each time skin contact felt like a blessing to receive, because now she saw what a curse it could feel like. She no longer took for granted each time Inej's hands slowly slipped through her hair, or ignored the gentle weight of Jesper's hands at her hips. The greatest gift Kaz had given her was not only his love, but how his entry into her life made her appreciate how to love so much more.
In that way each of her partners had given her new perspectives into intimacy. It felt like against her will, she was loving herself. Like they found something within her to love so tightly she could not hold her grip on her hatred of it anymore.
Trust, she knew how to hate herself. She had seen the most vile parts of herself in the haze of withdrawals, and no amount of positive thinking or growth mindsets could convince her to think of such a hideousness as 'desirable'. Vomit was not desirable. Hurling insults in their faces was not 'sexy'. Sagging skin was not an alluring feature. And yet, here she was. In the heart of a den of luxury with two boys who trusted her absolutely. Two boys who, mind you, had held her hair for her during said withdrawals.
They had seen her in such a low state she would not have questioned it if they never met her gaze again once their business was concluded. Once the reality had sunk in again, and they had time to come to terms with how much she had changed over the course of things. She would not hold it against them if she was no longer beautiful in their eyes. And yet, they lingered with her. They touched her skin with reverence. Their breaths caught each time she was near them. If was still within her to check, she'd reach out to feel if their heart still skipped a beat when they looked into her eyes.
They loved her. Fuck if she knew why, but she wasn't going to look such a lovely gifted horse in it's mouth. If they could still find it in themselves to love her, she would by no means turn them away. It was too precious a commodity to ignore."

- two-bit goes to school just to have fun, not to learn anything
- i forgot how mean ponyboy was about Johnny when introducing him to the reader😭: “Johnny Cade was last and least. If you can picture a little dark puppy that has been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you’ll have Johnny.”
- ponyboy goes on a rant about how much darry hates him but ends the paragraph by saying: “I don’t care about Darry. But I was still lying and I knew it. I lie to myself all the time. But I never believe me.” ☹️☹️
- curly shepard was the one to see dallas slash tim’s tires (i love my sprinkles of other characters in the sehinton-verse)
- pony says that he goes to the dx and both soda AND steve buy him cokes and let him work on the cars, meaning, that pony is exaggerating about steve hating him
- johnny had a scar from his temple down to his cheekbone from getting jumped by the socs
- sylvia tried hitting on johnny while dallas was in reform school 😟hello i don’t remember this
- a half-drunk two-bit once gave ponyboy a lecture on avoiding girls like sylvia
- ponyboy says that he’s almost as quiet as johnny

Somehow, Through the Storm
Chapter 24 - Inej
This is an intense one, please check the warnings!!!

This is a Hadestown-inspired kanej retelling of Orpheus and Eurydice. Full work summary under cut 🖤
Chapter snippet:
She couldn’t remember a time where she didn’t know that she could sing, though maybe one existed somewhere in the Before. It seemed to simply be a constant, before all the constants left her: Inej was a wire walker; Inej was safe; Inej was loved; Inej could sing. It was only a small part of the performance, the spectacle was slowed with little to look at and the shows were otherwise more fast-paced, but always Inej sang. Sometimes towards the end, sometimes to open the show, sometimes as the accompaniment to one of her cousins' performances. Mama and Papa called her a little songbird, and would each press a kiss to the top of her forehead when Inej stepped offstage, glowing, at the end of performance.
Inej hadn’t sung a single note in two years.
Summary: In the slums of the Warehouse District, Kaz and Inej are struggling their way through a seemingly unending winter. Wrapped up in a stranger's overcomplicated marriage contract that he is convinced is key to solving the merciless weather, Kaz remains busy and distracted for days on end, putting everything else at risk. So when a storm ravages the city and sweeps Inej into danger, the offer of safety, food, and a place to stay is an overwhelming one - no matter the cost. Terrified of mounting threats, Inej signs a contract - not knowing she would land herself trapped at the Menagerie.
Kaz signs a contract that states if he can walk all the way through the city and back to the Warehouse District with Inej behind him, never looking back at her, they will both go free. But this is the Barrel, the darkest part of the city where the rules of physics can change with the stroke of a pen; the journey back will not be the same as journey there…
*
This is a Hadestown-inspired reimagining of the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, casting Kaz and Inej as our main characters and heavily featuring our beloved Crows, set in an alternate version of the Grishaverse with a different magic system based entirely on contracts.
