Tim: slim. He's a ginger magnet.

Jason: and he has a tendency to fuck them, roy was the only exception.

Roy plays the guitar, it’s a beaten thing. Scratched and it has some stickers from Lian. Is he good at it? He doesn’t think so. Jason absolutely loves it. He sits down and just listens when Roy plays it.

It’s an unspoken rule, don’t speak when it’s guitar time. Roy notices, so he does it frequently…just to see Jason so focused on the guitar…and he sometimes hums when he plays it.

Jason tried to touch the guitar once, Roy stared. Jason never tried to touch it again.

Finally (somewhat) sorted my thoughts and wrote this out as a post because I promised @vivianne-is-tired more angsty Jason posts, and I hope to deliver.

I'm sure others have talked about this but It's been stuck in my head for the past couple of days and I just need somewhere to ramble.

When dealing with loss or grief, some people try to do everything in their power to forget about it, it hurts so badly they want to pretend it never happened and move on, while others are so scared of forgetting the memories with that person or the world moving on without the person they've lost that they can't let go or move on.

I see Jason as both and neither of these types of people.

I think he's stuck in an odd purgatory in between wanting to forget and wanting to remember that he drives himself insane with it.

And two of the most important people in his life simultaneously help him grieve and unintentionally make it so. much. worse.

Dick Grayson his brother and Roy Harper his bestfriend.

Let me explain how.

Roy Harper & Catherine Todd

Let's start off with the obvious.

Red Hair, Green eyes, Fair skin, Struggling with addiction.

Now Imagine:

When Jason was little and Catherine was out of it, he'd curl up with her on their mattress on the floor to stay warm (and to try and hold on to her, scared that if he let go, she'd just float away)

Now, an older Jason is teaming up with the Outlaws, having to curl up with Arsenal on a flimsy cot somewhere in Moscow to get warm and stay warm.

The similarities aren't lost on him. On one hand, he wants to get as far away from Roy as possible, he wants to kick and scream and laugh because it's so fucking stupid.

On the other hand, he wants to cry so fucking badly. He wants to curl up and hold on to Roy with everything he has because maybe this time he can will it to work.

He hates himself for seeing the similarities, almost just as much as he's glad he can still remember enough of what she used to look and be like when she was still sober for his mind to make the comparisons with Roy.

And it feels like the ultimate betrayal.

Jason can never look at Kori or Artemis and see glimpses of Catherine Todd, and despite how much he despised doing it, he tried to connect them to her so hard.

Because the red hair and green eyes have to be what remind him so heavily of his Mom. It has to, because if it's not, there is only one other connection he can draw, and it's not fair.

It's not fair to Roy or his Ma.

Because Roy is better than that, he got better. He's been clean for years. He is an amazing father to Lian and has made sure she's never left in the dark or felt unloved, and Jason was supposed to be one of the few people in his life that Roy could trust not to hold his past over him.

And Catherine Todd was so much more than a Crime Alley druggie. She tried so hard to give Jason the best life she could, considering their situation. She worked overnights and took extra shifts to buy him clothes and food and a Jane Austen book for his birthday that they really couldn't afford.

She believed he was gonna make a life for himself away from Crime Alley.

And yet, some twisted part of his mind still looks at the memories of his smiling Mother and Roy sitting across from him on a Gotham rooftop and compares the two.

His subconscious looks at two people whom he would live and die for, and tarnishes their memories with the word Junkie.

Jason is so worked up and hates him self so much because he is convinced that the reason Roy resembles his Ma and the others (Kori, Artemis, Barbara, etc.) don't is because of their similar struggles with addiction. He hates that subconsciously, he must be defining them both by their mistakes, and that he doesn't realize why they seem similar until a while later.

I'm probably gonna make a part 2 elaborating more on Cat and Roy another day, I'm just kinda tired rn lol, and part 2 is where I'm going to go into the second part of this, which is:
