My media this week (15-21 Jun 2025)
ngl lads (gn) i wish packing a flat you've lived in for 27 years was this easy. i am going thru it. 😤
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊 🎧The Beast of Littleton Woods (Lady Hardcastle Mysteries #12) (T.E. Kinsey, author; Elizabeth Knowelden, narrator) - more low-key adventures with Emily & Florence - the cozy mystery comfort read I really fucking needed this week
😊 War & Peace and the Redemption of Bucky Barnes (ThePirateStorm) - 51K, stucky modern no-powers AU - bucky's a writer, steve's a single dad with a teenage daughter, they have a meet ugly that quickly turns around - enjoyable read, I was quite chuffed I correctly identified the IRL book series that Bucky's is based on
😊 🎧Murder at the English Manor (A Miss Underhay Mystery #20) (Helena Dixon, author; Karen Cass, narrator) - Kitty & Matt get roped in to investigating the disappearance (murder) of a maid from a local estate (whose folks are trying to facilitate a 'Dollar Duchess' marriage and would prefer no unpleasantness)
😊 Fall Into You (Dylan Morrison) - very enjoyable contemp queer romance with a really great meet-ugly, explored a lot about how messy and contradictory and complex people are and also about how fucked up family dynamics are. -
💖💖 +39K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
Favorite Things (ann_anotherthing) - Stranger Things: Steddie, 17K - more adventures of middle-aged men 😂🥰 I just fucking love this universe/these versions of them (most of it a reread due to a new chapter being added)
Fates (E_Greer) - Justified: Boyd/Raylan, 22K - a wibbly wobbly timey wimey trip - AN starts "buckle in we’re doing six alternate universes" with a super cool guide on how to read each section (I am making it sound way more complicated than it is! Also it's just a banger fic, so enjoyable. I love these two)

Tears for Fears is a duo formed in 1981 in Bath, England by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith. They’ve sold over 30 million albums, starting with their first, The Hurting, which went to number one in the UK. But it was their second album, Songs from the Big Chair, that made them international stars. It came out in 1985, and had huge singles like “Shout” and “Head Over Heels.” But their biggest hit is “Everybody Wants to Rule The World.” It won Best Single at the BRIT Awards in 1986, and it’s been streamed over 2 billion times. So I talked to the two of them about how they, along with their producer Chris Hughes and keyboard player Ian Stanley, made a song that would help define the sound of the 80s.

Song Exploder Podcast - Remi Wolf
Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs and piece by piece tell the story of how they were made... I talked to Remi about how she and her collaborators wrote and produced the song “Soup.” How they used 80s gear to make 80s sounds, and how the idea of making a fun anthem quickly turned into something pretty vulnerable.
this episode was cute! lots of tidbits about where remi was in her romantic life.

"Rhiannon Giddens is one of those people where I feel like they have to start inventing new awards, because she's already won all of them," Song Exploder host Hrishikesh Hirway says of his guest. On the latest episode, Giddens talks about "You Louisiana Man," breaking down the song from her new album, You're the One. You can hear what she had to say about it here.

The first episode of Song Exploder, about The Postal Service song “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight,” came out 10 years ago, in January 2014. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the podcast, we’re doing what bands do, and putting out a deluxe, expanded edition of our very first release: this version features a new interview, new insights, and new pieces of the song and demo.
The Postal Service formed in 2001. Their debut album came out in 2003, and it was a game changer. Their combination of electronic music and indie rock not only sold over a million copies; their songs were everywhere on TV and in film, and influenced a generation of artists. Last year, they played sold-out concerts across the US in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the album, and there are more shows to come in 2024. A few weeks ago, I spoke to Ben Gibbard, and I combined that with my original interview from 2013 with Jimmy Tamborello. And here, together, the two of them tell the story of how they made their song “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight.”
