" i'm told i'm more of performer , than anything. some people don't mean it as compliment , but i take it as one anyways. " she's aware of her image , after all. she leaned into it even. THE SNOW FELL IN LAZY SPIRALS outside the window, brushing against the frost-kissed panes as she sat cross-legged on an old rug near the hearth, stripping down her rifle with the familiarity of ritual—cleaning rag in one hand, disassembled steel in the other. Joel was upstairs, repairing the damn floorboard that creaked loud enough to wake all of Jackson every time Ellie snuck down for midnight reading.

It had been a year.

A year of Jackson’s uneasy peace pressing up against the feral edge of her instincts. A year of dinners eaten with people who smiled too easily, of teenagers asking her what the world used to be like. A year of patrols, of silent sunrises shared on horseback, of sleeping in a real bed and not waking with her heart in her throat. And still she didn’t unpack the second duffel bag. Still she checked every lock twice. Still her body tensed every time someone knocked on the door. But there were mornings when Joel made coffee the way she liked it—black, bitter, scalding—and left it on the table with a note that just said stay warm. There were days Ellie barreled through the door like a storm from the library; breathless, bright-eyed, ravenous to spill every plot twist and character death she'd read about before her boots even hit the mat. Some afternoons, Tess helped her patch up busted arrows in companionable silence; other times, they didn’t bother with words at all.

Outside, a distant bell rang. Curfew warning. Tess moved on instinct, muscle memory wrapped in callus and habit; her fingers coaxing the rifle back into wholeness with a final, satisfying click. Behind her, the fire sighed, wood-spit and wanting, but she let it hunger a little longer. Joel was in the yard now, brushing snow off the porch steps; the sight of him in the cold like that did something to her chest she didn’t have a name for. Relief, maybe. That they’d made it this far. She didn't wave. ( He wouldn't expect her to. ) But when he came back in, she’d hand him a cup of that black, bitter coffee.

And maybe . . . she’d unpack the duffel.

Yes I am dropping Arthur Lester and John Doe into a fantasy comic. I think it'd be good for him to interact with the 19/20 year olds (and the several thousand year old yet also a month old) who make up the Floof Squad. They should all compare notes on being a god/ primodial's favorite mortal and the issues that come from that.

tess’ jaw dropped to respond, but she couldn’t find the words. because what if dean was right? maybe deciding to finally use her abilities to help people wasn’t enough. she wasn’t a hunter like sam and there was a learning curve with the training. her contributions to their last case was mediocre at best. “look, you don’t want me here. i get it.” tess replied in a raspy tone, trying to conceal the disappointment. “if i’m getting in you and sam’s way and not helping enough with the visions, drop me wherever. i’ll hitch back home."

tess doesn't understand why her parents think the idea of her charming her way into a friendship with the senator's daughter is a good idea. sure, they're convinced it's because this will result in some good shit for them, it also feels risky. and stupid. but yet, here she is - mostly because they'd used anna and ella against her. she's pretending to pay attention to whatever the redhead is saying when a name that sounds vaguely familiar slips past her lips. she looks up, facing campbell now.
