Tips for those interested in doing this for longer term storage:

- Use scrapbooks that have acid free/ higher quality paper. Most paper is naturally acidic due to the lignin in wood pulp and is buffered with calcium carbonate. The buffer is not perfect, but acidification will cause discoloration and brittleness, and can transfer to other objects (ie your photos) so try to avoid that!

- Try to avoid all adhesive tape since those also tend to be acidic and the adhesive will inevitably shift and attach to the photos. Use archival grade if you must! Scrapbooks are cute but ultimately a preservation nightmare.

- Nitrile gloves are recommended for handling photos to avoid oil transfer and fingerprints (not cotton as commonly believed, as thick gloves can/ will disrupt your tactile mobility and make it more likely to crinkle pictures while handling)

- Keep your album in a climate controlled place! AC and low humidity is best but anywhere but direct sun at the very least. Attics are the death of these precious items since fluctuations in heat/ humidity is what causes uneven expansion and contraction of materials, causing damage (particularly between the layers of print in photos).

- In general, light is the devil which will degrade the dyes of photographs, especially cheaply printed ones. If you really would like unique photos on display, there are UV tinted photo frames. Otherwise, the adage many copies keeps things safe applies well :)

- If you keep photos in plastic sleeves, check that they’re archival grade or ‘inert’. Polyethylene and polypropylene are good for this! Glassine is not. Non-stable plastics will off-gas fumes and may potentially degrade and fuse to your photos.

- If you’re using high quality printed photographs (particularly from film) I recommend looking into the PAT (photographic activity test) test for any materials you store your prints in. Materials will often have a label indicating if they’ve passed this test.

Hope this helps! Remember it doesn’t have to last forever, but it’d be nice if it didn’t dissolve in 10 years.
