Getting back into playing AC Origins has got me thinking about Valhalla’s “The Last Chapter” again and how like. Completely unsatisfying it was. Like they really said yes, please spend 100+ hours building up your settlement, building relationships with characters, we’ll even have rejecting Odin in favour of the people you love be the climax of the whole game — except now we’re going to manage to make all 3 of those things seem meaningless in like 20 minutes of poorly put-together gameplay.

I get that they were trying to show a progression from Eivor viewing rejecting/accepting Odin as a dichotomous choice to her realizing she can learn from him while maintaining her own autonomy, but I just don’t think they played on that angle well. Even though leaving is intended to be portrayed as Eivor’s own choice, it’s just jarring to try to reconcile an Eivor more interested in knowledge for its own sake than her own people, an Eivor who would leave all the people she loves and all that she worked for never to return, with the Eivor we played as for dozens of hours, whose highest priorities were fully antithetical to leaving her clan. WHY did she need to leave all the other things that were important to her in order to learn from Odin? If she truly has power over him now, which I do think is what they were trying to say, why can’t she maintain her own life and identity while learning from him? It ends up coming across like Odin is still manipulating her even though I believe that is the opposite of what they were trying to say! I just hate it.

Chapter Summary: Olive branches of intimacy are offered through the guise of oranges, and it has Kenshi holding Johnny as if he’s more precious than a burning sun. That sounds too poetic for Kenshi, but theres nothing else that would make him feel like this.

(And or, they finally have a talk with each other while eating oranges, with the old smell of nicotine in the air and Johnny kissing Kenshi)

I just realized part of me loved the BG3 epilogue just a little bit more because that's what AC Valhalla's The Last Chapter should have been. An actually satisfying, oh hey this 100% connects to everything I just did in my game and the story and it even adds more to the ending, epilogue. One that isn't meant strictly to tease a new game and a totally different protagonist. One that is meant to celebrate the characters you loved and the fact you just spent 100+ hours on this game you adored...an actual "thank you for playing" that didn't need that as a message at the end because the content WAS the thank you.

Thank you for giving me that experience, Larian. And Ubisoft, that's how it is done. Take notes.
