📢 And we are live! 📢
[Plain Text: (loudspeaker emoji) And we are live! (loudspeaker emoji)]
As we steamroll into 2024, I'd like to kick off the year by announcing that The Disability Book Archive is now officially live and open for public browsing!
It hasn't all gone as smoothly as I wanted it to, and I haven't been able to put every book I wanted to on (yet, I'm working on it!) but I'm happy with how it's turned out and I hope you all like it it to!
I would like to thank everyone for your continued support over this project, it means a great deal to me. I hope we will only continue to grow as the year goes on!
Happy browsing, and happy new year!!

I got overwhelmed over the summer and didn't get to post reviews for the ARCs I had at the time. But I really want to share this one, because it was so cute!
Navigating with You is a graphic novel in which two new girls at school bond over a manga series. Neesha is a Black teen with cerebral palsy in her legs (uses leg braces/forearm crutches/wheelchair interchangeably) and Gabi is a bi Latina surfer who's moved away from her Florida home after tragedy.
They make it a challenge to track down the out-of-print manga while falling in love in the process. I love how real and down-to-earth this book was, with such depth of character and a fun storyline without over-angst.
It's also a really great disability representation, both Neesha's CP and Gabi's PTSD, touching on microaggressions and wheelchair-moving consent. A funny scene is when Neesha goes into a thrift shop with her crutches to make a distraction, sarcastically thinking "Oh no! I'm a disabled teen in your shop full of breakable knicknacks", and the shop owner reacts just as expected. (It's Gabi who ends up breaking things), and I loved the panel where Gabi triumphantly exclaims "My girlfriend trusts me to push her wheelchair!" XD
The graphic novel is interspersed with full-page snippets of the manga they are reading, which is ridiculously over-dramatic in true manga style. The sapphic love story IS. SO. CUTE. and the art is gorgeous, too. Highly recommend picking this up if you can find it!
Content warnings:
PTSD episode, death of parent (flashback), car accident (flashback), ableism, biphobia, emotionally abusive ex, divorced parents

I see you often have long lists of stories/books reblogged, do you have a particular favourite you’d recommend?
Also I can’t recall if you have any that are specifically disability linked but if you know if any that’d be cool to know of/have linked if you’d oblige me? I’m ideally in search of a fantasy/fiction book written almost entirely from the perspective of a blind protagonist as I think it must fascinatingly change descriptions throughout it if done well but don’t myself know of any. (And am of course happy to continue a search myself, but you appear to read/learn of a wide variety of stories so thought there was a chance you’d know about something and didn’t think it’d hurt to ask).
my current favorites are the locked tomb series (perhaps better known as gideon the ninth), the death of jane lawrence by caitlin starling, and niche/indie pick miss bennet's dragon by m verant!!
(the latter is the first in a series called jane austen fantasy - if you've ever thought 'jane austen books don't have enough dragons' or 'i think elizabeth bennet could have kicked napoleon's ass' or 'i think mary bennet is an autistic lesbian who should fall in love with georgiana darcy', THESE ARE THE BOOKS FOR YOU. mary is my favorite character hands down i adore her i'd die for her she's so COOL)
also striiiictly speaking i have not actually read this yet but i recently received my copy of the same stars by dori lumpkin (published by @archiveoftheodd whose stuff is so cool that i've even gone to the lengths of telling my not-even-remotely-on-tumblr roommate about them), and i'm SUPER excited to read it, so there's that too!!
i do also often rb those lists so that future me has something to look at - my #other people's writing tag is a reference for me as much as it is one for other people aghslgkjsfd. i have not read everything that i reblog, but i like to reblog when something intrigues me, since if it intrigues me it's reasonably likely to intrigue some of the people who follow me as well. plus word of mouth is basically the only way to get things off the ground on tumblr and i want to support fellow authors and small presses
re a book written from the perspective of a blind protagonist, i don't know of any off the top of my head but @thedisabilitybookarchive might have some!

Have you seen @thedisabilitybookarchive cos they archive lists of books with disability rep and you can search by genre.
Also two of my sci-fi books have disability rep in them.
Ravi from Welcome To Humanity is one of the three protagonists and has an entire prosthetic arm and leg and stuff and it's not exactly the most functional.
But I think Matter from Unlicensed Delivery suits this desire too, they're one of the five pov characters and the first one we start with. On page one, Matter is complaining about IPA standardised chairs and how bad they are for their chronic illness. They have a flare day on page, have a complex relationship with the ship's CMO, and their chronic illness impacts the climax of the novel.
I wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness in fantasy, science fiction and action genres.
Not just a side character with 30 seconds of screentime. An important character that doesn't just exist to further the storylines of other characters. I want a character that doesn't get "cured" or healed. A character that stays disabled and/or chronically ill. A character that isn't afraid to ask for help. One that doesn't think they're a burden and doesn't try to hide their disability/ chronic illness.
I want to see how it affects them, not just know they're disabled/chronically ill and it jist never gets mentioned again. I don't mean it should be their entire personality but being disabled and or chronically ill can affect many parts of life.
I just wish there was more representation of disabilities and chronic illness that shows every part of it. Especially in fantasy and science fiction it's lacking.

Decided to rejig the first post I ever made here for admin purposes, so I figured it’s about time I made an intro.
The Disability Book Archive website:
Everyone go follow @thedisabilitybookarchive (and visit the website!!) for more book content!
Basic Info:
Call me Curio
I am an adult, and I use she/her pronouns.
I am physically disabled and I use mobility aids. I’m an ambulatory wheelchair/powerchair user, and I also use a cane, a rollator and ankle foot orthotics/splints.
My condition is called Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia. Please ask me about it if you are curious, I’m more than happy to educate people!
If you're curious but don't want to ask me, here is a link to the Spastic Paraplegia Foundation.
I like cats, dogs, sharks, zombie movies, writing, video games, baking and archery.
Blog Stuff:
This is a disability blog but sometimes I’ll post other stuff I like. It’s tagged “not disability related” so block that if you’re not interested.
My cats are more popular than me. I get that. If you just want the occasional cat stuff [read: rants], it's all here.
I'm not going to post NSFW and never will, but I'm not not going to post some more adult stuff occasionally so. Do with that information what you will.
Sometimes I swear. Sometimes a lot. Just block the "swearing" tag if you don't want to see it.
I have no authority to tell you if you are or are not disabled, but I will support you and offer guidance on the matter if you feel like you need it.
I'm not going to tell you if can or cannot say cripple.
If I don’t like you, your blog, and/or the stuff you post you will be blocked.
I am a member and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community.
I support Gaza. I am absolutely not anti-Jewish.
I am not religious but I will not tolerate hate towards or by religious communities.
If you want to spam like/reblog then go wild. I love when people do that. /srs
If you think I’ve made a mistake on something please just drop me a quick message and I’ll do my best to sort it out. I’m very willing to own up to and fix my mistakes.
Block the “wheelchair in the wild” “curio rambles” and "curio reviews" tags if you’ve just come for the reblogs/resources, and don’t want to see my day to day ramblings.
I try and write descriptions and transcriptions for the media I reblog but sometimes it can take me a little while.
My asks are very much open and I am happy to answer almost anything, even if it’s not disability related. Although if you ask me a question, I might take a couple of days to respond if I have to research it so please be patient.
Resource Masterposts:
I tag all resources that I make and find as “resources” and “disability resources". Some of mine are:
UK Riots: A post I'm making regarding how to find information on the current far-right riots in the UK and staying safe. Please share any information that you can.
Disability Aid Databases- A list of disability databases across the world that offer advice on things like finances, disability services, the law and buying assistive technology/disability aids.
Disability Aids: Where to buy- A large list of disability aid suppliers and businesses across the world.
The Disability Library: Now a website!! A collection of articles and books, non fiction and fiction, regarding disability and/or containing disabled characters. Suggestions welcome. Now you can submit your own books if you scroll to the google form at the end.
Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia: FAQ: I plan on updating this but this is essentially just a bunch of commonly asked questions about HSP.
Other Resources Masterpost: Really just a place where I put other resources I find that I don't have a place for, not all of it disability related. There's some good stuff on here.
Gardening: All the advice I get about gardening

I second the Compound Fracture recommendation! Perfect for horror/familial revenge lovers who want good trans autistic or physical disability rep (and no, Lady does not die, but do check TW’s for this one). His other two books, Hell Follows With Us and The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, feature trans mcs, HFWU has an autistic love interest and TSBIT’s mc is autistic too. AJW is in the middle of writing at least two other books now!!
Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse has a badass blind mc, although I must digress it does have a ‘magic spell that can make you see’ thing a few times.
And perhaps it’s stereotypical, but by god do I love Six of Crows.
For more please go check out the amazing @thedisabilitybookarchive!!!
Happy International Day for People with Disabilities!
I would like to hear everyone's favourite book featuring a disabled character!
and if you don't have one, I want you to follow this post or go do some research and find one to read!
disabled people get left out of diversity recommendations a lot, which is ridiculous given that we intersect with every other marginalisation possible. so today, we are going to do something about that
I'll start by recommending two books because I can never just suggest one book 🤭
The Degenerates by J Albert Mann is my ultimate disability rec because it's based on actual disabled history and shines an important light on how we've been treated - and in some places how we're still treated
Compound Fracture by Andrew Joseph White is also getting recommended because I just can't stop thinking about it. but also because two of its leads are disabled, both with facial differences and neurodivergences
i can't wait to hear everyone else's suggestions! 🧡 Happy IDPWD!
