Cactus fascinates me, does it run on code similar to an existing instruction set or is it completely original on that front?
What can you do with it? What's it's storage?
Tumblr media
Both the Cactus (the original wooden prototype from years ago) and the new PCB Cactus(es) are essentially derived from a minimal 6502 computer design by Grant Searle for their core logic. Here's what that would look like on a breadboard:
Tumblr media
There isn't much to it, it's 32K of RAM, 16K of ROM containing Ohio Scientific's version of Microsoft BASIC, a 6850 ACIA for serial interaction, some logic gates, and of course a 6502 microprocessor (NMOS or CMOS, doesn't matter which). You hook it into a terminal and away you go.
Grant's design in turn can be best described as a distilled, modernized version of the OSI Challenger series of computers. Here's an OSI-400 and a Challenger 4P respectively:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The left one is a replica of the 400 circa 1976, also called the Superboard. It was affordable, endlessly reconfigurable and hackable, but ultimately very limited in capabilities. No BASIC, minimal monitor ROM you talk to over serial, but you could connect it to a bus to augment its features and turn it into a more powerful computer.
Whereas the OSI C4P on the right from about 1979 has more RAM, a video card, keyboard, BASIC built in, serial interface, cassette tape storage, and that's just the standard configuration. There was more room to expand and augment it to your needs inside the chassis (alot changed in 3 years for home computer users).
Grant's minimal 6502 design running OSI BASIC is a good starter project for hobbyists. I learned about the 6502's memory map decoding from his design. I modified and implemented his design on a separate cards that could connect to a larger backplane.
Tumblr media
Here are the serial, ROM, RAM, and CPU cards respectively:
Tumblr media
Each one is 100% custom, containing many modifications and fixes as I developed the design. However, that's only half of the computer.
I really wanted a 6502 machine with a front panel. People told me "nobody did that", or couldn't think of examples from the 1970s but that seemed really strange to me. Especially since I had evidence to the contrary in the form of the OSI-300:
Tumblr media
This one I saw at VCF West back in 2018 illustrates just how limited of a design it is. 128 bytes of RAM, no ROM, no serial -- just you, the CPU, and toggle switches and LEDs to learn the CPU. I was inspired the first time I saw one in 2015 at VCF East, which is probably when this whole project got set in motion.
Later that year I bought a kit for a miniature replica OSI-300 made by Christopher Bachman, and learned really quickly how limited the design philosophy for this particular front panel was. It was a major pain in the ass to use (to be clear, that's by OSI's choice, not any fault of Christopher in his implementation)
Tumblr media
So... I designed my own. Took awhile, but that's the core of what the Cactus is: my attempt at experiencing the 1970s homebrew scene by building the computer I would have wanted at the time. Over half of the logic in the Cactus is just to run the front panel's state machine, so you can examine and modify the contents of memory without bothering the 6502. I added in all of the things I liked from more advanced front panels I had encountered, and designed it to my liking.
Here's the original front panel, accompanying logic, and backplane connected to the modern single board computer (SBC) version of the machine:
Tumblr media
And here's the new Cactus SBC working with the new front panel PCB, which combines the logic, physical switch mountings, and cabling harnesses into a single printed circuit board.
Tumblr media
So, what can you do with it? Pretty much the same things I do already with other contemporary 1970s computers: play around in BASIC, fire up the occasional game, and tinker with it.
I've got no permanent storage designed for the Cactus as yet, it's been one of those "eventually" things. The good news is that a variety of software can be ported to the hardware without too much trouble for an experienced hobbyist. A friend of mine wrote a game called ZNEK in 6502 assembly which runs from a terminal:
Tumblr media
Right now, you have to either toggle in machine programs from the front panel from scratch, burn a custom ROM, or connect it to a serial terminal to gain access to its more advanced features:
Tumblr media
Here's it booted into OSI BASIC, but I have also added in a modern descendant of Steve Wozniak's WOZMON software for when I need to do lower level debugging.
I've also got a video card now, based on the OSI-440. I have yet to implement a keyboard, or modify BASIC to use the video board instead of the serial connection. Even if I did, screen resolution is pretty limited at 24x24 characters on screen at once. Still, I'm working on that...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, I hope that answers your question. Check the tags below to see the whole process stretching back to 2017 if you're curious to learn more of the project's history. I'm also happy to answer any more questions you might have about the project.

Looking Back
Today, 26 March 2025, is the tenth anniversary of the first time I put power to a Z80 microprocessor in a breadboard and watched it blink some LEDs.
Tumblr media
Within a few weeks that Z80 would be completely surrounded by other chips and hundreds of wires to form my first functioning homebrew computer.
Tumblr media
Another week and I was already removing a 68000 from a (presumed) dead motherboard, with grand ideas of moving up to the 16-bit era (but absolutely no understanding of what that would entail)
Tumblr media
It would be another two years before the first time I put that 68000 in a breadboard and successfully used it to blink an LED.
Tumblr media
By the time another year had rolled around that 68000 was living on a soldered breadboard and for the first time on one of my projects, it was running real software — EhBASIC.
Tumblr media
Always looking to more challenging projects, while I was building with a 68000, I was already reading through the manual for the 68030 trying to understand how to build with a proper 32-bit microprocessor. Just one more year and I had that 68030 on a wire wrap board, blinking an LED.
Tumblr media
The next year I was doing the most ridiculous thing I could think of — free-running a Pentium CPU on a wire wrap breadboard to blink an LED. Because I could.
Tumblr media
By the end of the next year that 68030 had moved from its wire wrap board onto a proper printed circuit board — my first ever 4-layer PCB.
Tumblr media
The next year saw the towering expansion of the 68030 build, adding new peripherals and functionality.
Tumblr media
Another year and I had an all-new 68030 build on a Micro-ATX form-factor motherboard developed in just a couple months ahead of VCF Southwest 2023.
Tumblr media
The next year I focused on developing software for my existing 68030 board stack, rather than building something new from scratch. I succeeded in developing a minimal multi-user kernel to run four instances of BASIC simultaneously.
All along in between working on these projects I have done component-level repairs on various computers, developed expansion cards for the Mac SE, built PCs both new and old, burned out hard, developed some smaller homebrew computers, had a lot of false starts, failed projects, and abandoned projects, and completed some massive projects in my day job.
Looking back at everything I've worked on over these past 10 years I am absolutely amazed at how far I have come and what I have been able to accomplish. Much of it I still don't understand how I managed to actually pull it off, and I'm not entirely sure I could duplicate my successes.
Here's to the next ten years

Rooooound display prototype testing 🌀✨
Okay, we've got our 1.3" round TFT prototype ready for testing - and here's a cute GIF of a dial turning back and forth. It's a great way to test the display, backlight, and SD card interface. We're using a QT Py ESP32 since we need quite a bit of oomph to decode GIFs and display them in real-time. With EYESPI, no wiring is required! This is good to go - it's time to book the PCB panel!

Another 2022-present portable computer thing. This is a 1991 Corvallis Microtechnologies PC5-L. It's a ruggedized, waterproof handheld MS-DOS computer meant for industrial applications. It ran on Ni-Cd batteries and they died so now it runs on AA's I got two of them for $50 on eBay during one of those months when i impulse buy obscure electronics as a form of escapism This thing is an absolute brick. You could murder someone by hitting them on the head with this, and it would work fine afterwards. Here's pictures of its organs for anyone curious:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That thick red wire around the screen PCB is a heater. Yep there's a setting to heat up the LCD so it doesn't get sluggish or shatter when you decide to leave it in the freezer. The thing runs on a little system-on-chip thing, which is interesting to see coming from the early 90's. Iirc the datasheet says it's capable of analog video out as well as driving the LCD, but I haven't poked around enough to enable it. Might be cool to hook it up to a TV. I did, however, open those 512k storage modules and I saw some unpopulated footprints on the boards. So I ordered some of the same chips, and at some point I'mma try soldering them on and see if it recognizes the extra space. They came with two voltmeter modules, which I couldn't get to work, so I took one of the casings and made it into a USB and WiFi adapter using an ESP32 running Zimodem, since this thing has RS232 ports on the top. I also made my own charging adapter, since they didn't come with one. I see that internal PCMCIA slot, and I tried putting a CF card adapter in, and tried installing the drivers, but it didn't work. I'm not good at DOS tbh, and I know nothing of what this slot is for. I might come back to it later. I did all of this in 2022-23 and haven't messed with it since. Except to use it to talk to my Kaypro 4 '84:
Tumblr media
More on that one later. I love portable computers !!!!!

To anyone who wants to draw a touhou fight scene remember the other interesting attacks the characters have, reimu doesn't just hit stuff with a stick and throw miko things at people she can also lock people in place with the duplex barrier spell card or shoot big squares instead of just normal bullets (these are from PCB) also sakuya I never see anyone use that one bomb she had in PCB with the square that follows her movement that could som manipulation of time and space a the same time also remember that ability cards exist and could make some interesting battles , anyway hope this helps with any doujins cause this partially also for me to remember main point is look at lists of characters bombs and weird shot types for fight reference.

tell me everything you can infer from this image of a busted usb I own.
So the chip appears to have no text on it. That means this is a generic IC/PCB, which doesn't mean the thing is cheap, often the brand name ones use the same.
So that chip up top is the controller. It speaks USB to the computer and it talks to the flash chip(s), which are going to be on the other side. Often the boards are designed to have spots for multiple chips, so they can reuse the same board: the difference between a 32gb drive and a 64gb drive is just how many chips they solder onto it.
So if this thing is dead, it's probably the flash chip. The controllers seem pretty reliable, but they're useless without the flash, and flash chips slowly die as they have a limited number of writes.
And since USB flash drives are effectively disposable, they end up with the cheapest crappiest flash. The good shit goes into enterprise SSDs, then consumer SSDs, then big device on-board-storage (eMMC), then finally SD cards and then USB drives.
So yeah. Can't really tell you anything about it other than that. The numbers you seer are going to be used internally by the PCB assembler, they don't mean anything to anyone else.

tj hughes x fem! reader
warnings?: cursing, kissing, fluff!!
when you know you know
masterlist
-
as you finished packing your bags, you hung up the facetime and turned to your fellow team girlfriend, alexis.
“i’m so excited for this trip, i still feel so new to the group, it’s only been 4 months so it’ll definitely be nerve wracking.” you admit to her
“we all love you so much, you have nothing to worry about. we all hoped tj could land a girl like you.”
“you’re too nice stop it.” you say, a blush creeping onto your cheeks.
“no i’m being serious. he’s a good, sweet, and responsible guy. we’re so glad he has you, and then we also get to have you. it’s a win win.” she smiles as you hug her.
“are you sure it’s okay that tj and i have our own car? it’s a long drive, id feel bad if only we traveled alone.”
“yes babe, it’s totally fine.” she laughs exiting your room.
“goodnight lex.” you call out.
“good night y/n.” she yells back.
-
early the next morning, the lot of cars arrive outside to pick the girls up.
“i’ll see you when we get there.” alexis smiles climbing into the vehicle with rutger and kayleigh.
“you ready to go?” tj asks, appearing next to you leaving the car running.
“yep.” you say smiling.
“me too.” he replies kissing you on the cheek and grabbing your luggage.
“you don’t have to carry that.”
“well i’m not letting you so, it doesn’t matter.” he replies back and you roll your eyes jokingly.
“catch yall in pcb.” frank says rolling the window down before they take off down the street. tj opens the car door for you to get in and puts on the playlist you two made together.
“damn, long drive.” you scoff looking at the screen.
“yeah well at least it’s just me and you.” he says placing a light hand on your thigh.
-
“teej?”
“yeah baby?”
“can we stop? i need a snack.”
“yeah of course, look at the exit signs and let me know.” he says without hesitation.
“this next one has a nice gas station.”
“perfect.” he says, pulling off the long interstate. you enter the gas station grabbing a few snacks and drinks for the ride. you place them all on the counter and they get rung in.
“your total is 11.84. cash or card?” the woman asks.
“card.” tj interrupts stepping up beside you.
“tj i-“
“don’t care, i’m paying.” he smirks before quickly pecking you on the side of the head causing you to giggle. the pair returns to the car, snacks in hand, for the remainder of their 15 hour ride.
“is it okay if i take a nap? i woke up at 4 and it’s really ruining my vibe right now.” you ask.
“yeah of course, however long you need.”
“okay i just wanted to make sure, didn’t wanna leave you lonely.”
“i’m never lonely with you.” he smiles turning to look at you which you gladly return. you shut your eyes with your head leaned up against the window, praying this long drive could be over soon so you could enjoy time with everyone. you were quick to slip from reality soon after you shut your eyes. after what seemed like a few short minutes you woke up and saw the clock had gone from 12 pm to 3 pm.
“woah i slept for a long time.” you say quietly breaking the silence.
“good morning sunshine, how’d you sleep?” he giggles.
“oh i slept wonderfully.” you reply stretching out.
“we only have about 7 more hours to go.”
“ONLY?” you say in disbelief, this ride was endless.
“yeah i know, it’s taking forever. they’re like a solid hour ahead of us.” tj says.
“wow we’re gonna be fashionably late.”
“that’s because we’re awesome.” he turns to you smirking.
“totally.”
-
those 7 hours passed dreadfully and you’d finally arrived. you see the condo building approaching.
“finally.” you sigh as tj passes it without hesitation.
“isn’t that where we’re staying?”
“no baby, that’s where they’re staying.” he smirks.
“what do you mean they’re staying?”
“my aunt owns a house a little further down the coast. she’s letting us stay there.” he says placing a hand back onto your leg.
“you’re joking?”
“not joking.”
“who else is there?”
“it’s just for us y/n.”
“like we have a whole house just for me and you?” you ask and he nods.
“does everyone already-“
“yes, they know. i told them.” he quickly replies.
“they weren’t mad?”
“no of course not. we’ll still see them.” he giggles, squeezing your leg slightly. you pull into the driveway of a gorgeous beach house. as soon as the car is off, you open the door and inhale the salty scent of the ocean.
“it’s beautiful.” you say.
“i’m glad you like it.” he says grabbing your luggage and carrying it up the front steps. he unlocks the door, opening it for you to enter. you observe all of the cute and modern coastal decorations that littered the entryway.
“where’s my room?” you ask.
“you mean our room?” he says and you turn your head.
“this is our first big trip together, of course we’re sharing a room. i don’t wanna spend a split second away from you.” he says hugging you from behind.
“oh i’m so excited. i’m gonna go unpack.” you say grabbing onto his arms.
“sounds good, i’m gonna go grab my stuff.” he says pulling away and exiting the house back out to the car.
-
after you finished unpacking everything, it was late. you’d spent the whole day in the car and just finished unpacking at a ripe 10:30 pm. you step into the bathroom, pushing your hair back with your big tacky bow headband to wash your face. once your skincare was complete, you walk back into the room to tj already tucked in, waiting for you to join him.
“i love that pink headband you use to wash your face. it’s so goofy.” he says as you tuck yourself under the covers.
“it keeps my hair out of my face and i look great in it.”
“touché to that.” he giggles reaching over to pull his lamp string.
“goodnight my love.” he says kissing you sweetly on the lips.
“goodnight tj.” you smile, rolling over and drifting off into a peaceful sleep. when you wake up the next morning, the bed is cold and empty.
“what the-“ you say looking over at the alarm clock that read 8:30. you get out of bed and slide on your slippers, waltzing into the bathroom to put your contacts in. you make your way out of the bathroom and follow the strong sent of something being cooked, which lead you to the kitchen. you’re met with tj leaned over the stove in his boxers and your bright pink bow headband.
“good morning.” he smiles at you.
“good morning my beautiful bow head.” you giggle walking into the kitchen to kiss him on the cheek.
“hey it really does keep my hair out of my face.”
“and you look great in it.” you say, just like he had last night.
“honestly, can you order me one? cards in my wallet on the counter.”
“yes teej, i’ll order you a pink bow headband.” you laugh.
“i’m being fully serious i hope you know.” he says turning to you smirking.
“you are very hard to take serious in that bow babe.” you state, pulling up amazon on your phone.
“i’m a very serious person, haven’t you noticed.” he scoffs, returning his focus to the pancake that was ready to flip. you order him his prized bow headband and pull yourself up onto the counter to watch him hard at work. once he’s finished his cooking, the two of you eat and get ready for a day alone at the beach.
“white or purple?” you say holding up your bikinis.
“whichever one shows more of your butt.” he says, his words muffled by his toothbrush. you took note of the grey swim shorts he was wearing and how they complimented his skin tone. he was practically irresistible.
“lord.” you laugh, setting the white one back in your suitcase.
“what? is it a crime to stare at my girlfriends butt?” he asks, spitting the remaining toothpaste out.
“no tj, it’s not.” you laugh, changing into your swimsuit.
“look at you, do a spin.” he smiles getting a good look at you. you do as your told and approach him, his arms wrapping around you and sliding down your back onto your ass as your arms linked around his neck.
“you’re so beautiful.” he smiles.
“all you babe.” you reply kissing him and pulling away.
“got everything ready?” he asks, picking up the two chairs.
“yup, i’m ready to go.” you say, leading the pair out the door. after a few hours spent on the beach together, you come back to the beach house to get ready to go to dinner with everyone.
“first day at the beach, check.” you say setting everything down on the deck, out of breath from the hellish walk back.
“new favorite thing, going to the beach with you.” he smiles, pressing a kiss to your warm sunkissed cheek.
“baby, i’m getting in the shower.” you call out from the bathroom before starting the water. once it’s a temperature you liked, you step in, washing away all the remaining sand. completely relaxing in the shower. once you were fully rinsed, you step out and wrap your body in a fluffy white towel before hearing tj’s voice. you could tell he was on the phone so you tip toe over to the door, pressing your ear up to it, trying to see who he could be talking to.
“it’s been great mom, the weather is so nice.” he says, you not being able to hear the other end of the conversation.
“she’s been incredible. couldn’t ask for a better woman.” he says before pausing for a good while.
“i really do think i love her mom. i don’t think i’ve ever felt this way about-“ he begins and you back away from the door, not wanting to spoil anything for yourself.
“he loves me?” you whisper to yourself, your heart growing giddy at the fact that you felt the exact same way. you just never knew when to say it. you finished drying off, blowing out your hair and exiting the bathroom.
“bathrooms free if you wanna shower.” you smile at the strawberry blonde boy.
“perfect, i’ll be out in like two seconds okay?” he states.
“okay.” you blush as he kisses you on the head in passing.
-
the two of you got ready for dinner, listening to your playlist.
“which button up?” he asks holding up two of the shirts you’d bought him.
“i like the white one, we’ll be matchy matchy.” you laugh, applying a layer of aquaphor. he reappears in the doorway in his shirt and gives you a little twirl.
“you look great babe.” you giggle stepping towards him and attaching your lips to his.
“i’ll never look better than my lady. look at you, pure perfection.” he says, grabbing your hand and twirling you around.
“okay baby, let’s go, don’t wanna be late.” he says grabbing the keys and opening the front door for you.
“so where is it we’re going?” you ask buckling your seatbelt.
“well we have to make a pit stop first since the sun is setting. told them to give us 30 more minutes.” he winks at you.
“tj we are not fu-“
“that is not what i was implying, chill out.” he laughs, placing a hand in your lap and you interlock your fingers with his. he drives to a beach just down the road and pulls into a parking lot. you meet at the front of the car, him reaching his hand out to yours and you gladly accept. you both remove your shoes before walking down the short path to a beach that was completely empty.
“this is so peaceful.” you say as you get further out onto the beach.
“my mom and i used to come here every first sunset of our trips.” he smiles, stopping in his tracks.
“it’s beautiful tj.” you say looking around. he grabs onto your other hand to focus your attention onto him.
“just like you.” he smirks.
“stop you’re gonna make me blush or whatever.” you giggle together.
“listen y/n. we’re been together for 5 months 2 weeks and 4 days. those have been the best 5 months 2 weeks and 4 days of my life all because of you baby. you make my everyday so much brighter. i couldn’t stand living another day without telling you how much i love you. i love you so much i don’t even have to proper words to express it. you’re so beautiful, gracious, funny, sweet, kind. the list could go on forever. you’re fucking incredible. i love you so much.” he says, not losing your eye contact a single time, even as the tears welted up, eventually spilling over.
“i love you tj, i love you so much.” you say hugging onto the boy.
“why are you crying honey?” he giggles holding onto you tightly.
“i’ve never felt this way before. which sounds so tacky but everything just feels right with you. no icks, no complaints, nothing. you’re perfect i love you.” you say grabbing onto his face and bringing his lips to yours.
“you think we can still make it to dinner in time?” he giggles pulling away and wiping your tears delicately with his thumbs, bringing his lips to yours again for a short moment.
“i think we can, come on.” you say grabbing his hand and running back to the car. you make it back completely out of breath and quickly rinse your feet to get in the car, speeding off down the road to get to dinner. once the two of you finally arrive, you enter the restaurant to everyone sitting and waiting for the two of you.
“sorry for the hold up guys.” tj laughs pulling your chair out for you before he takes a seat beside you, placing an arm around your waist.
“and no before any of you fuckers ask, we were not having sex in the parking lot.” you say pointing at duker and rutger.
“hey i wasn’t gonna say anything.” dylan says defensively.
“he’s right, but i definitely was.” rutger says and kayleigh smacks him on the arm.
“what was the hold up then hm?” mark asks as frank nudges tj’s arm.
“you guys are acting like i proposed or something.” he laughs.
“well?” mark repeats.
“i told her i loved her.” he admits and the whole table smiles and rutger hands dylan a 20.
“yall bet on us?” you laugh.
“sure did.” duker smirks as rutger flips him off.
“did you say it back though?” alexis asks from beside frank.
“yes i sure did.” you smirk, leaning on tj’s shoulder as his hand brushed gently up and down your side.
“new official lovers have entered the group, we’re getting crazy now guys.” ethan says causing the whole table to laugh. this trip turned out to be the best thing that could’ve happened this semester, you were there with your best friends and what turned out to be the only guy you’ve ever truly loved.

(sorry for the tacky ending, didn’t know how to round it off😍)

February 26 - March 1 2025 2010
A mother will do whatever is best for her children.
Now I dont like questioning the disembodied voices but...
Tumblr media
The path through the mausoleum leads to a different part of the island where a dock can be found. Mom apparently rather than being forced away from Rose chose to leave of her own accord leaving only her martini glass behind.
Tumblr media
WV is building a better Can Town, Exile Town, where '[a]ll expatriates are welcome, no matter what happened in the past, regardless of professional persuasion or metallurgical affiliation.' While this just at face value means the 'jobs' of each metal item, ie. can, mailbox, ammo, and type of metal, its really easy to think this is the future WV envisions for him and the others. Perhaps in this timeline, on this planet, he will do the same as Slick and make his own Town reality. AR is none too impressed, especially as this is WV's attempt at wooing PM, and yet, right outside of Exile Town hes got a militia started.
[A]ny town without a proper militia is as good as conquered.
Tumblr media
As such he prepares one begrudgingly.
Sure~ Whatever you say AR. WV has his own moment of reflection admiring the sky 'oh my god a huge eggy looking thing just appeared in the sky.'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Daves fault. No really! we go back to Dave and Jade who have done most everything else to get the 'punch card eggy loking thign' which is immediately taken by the sprite crow to its 'nest made of shitty swords and soft puppet ass'. Obviously this makes Dave irate and he jokes about putting the egg in the microwave to hatch it which prompts Jade to dump his microwave off the skyscraper.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not sure exploding the egg is what SBURB wants Dave.
We get to learn more about the differences in player entry and some new machines. Each time a player enters the amount of build grist is muliplied by 10. So John started with 20, Rose had 200 and Dave has 2,000. It seems like the later you enter the easier time you have building (and moving things, remember when 100 Grist was an insane amount to move the cruxtruder?). We can also see some new grist types have been unlocked from the get go though without enemies you cant really use them.
Then boy oh boy do I get to talk about computers again. Since Dave does not have any shale at his disposal hes kinda SOL on using the Punch Designix. This is terrible because we cant see what the JUMPER BLOCK EXTENSION and PUNCH CARD SHUNT actually do with the ALCHEMITER. However we can speculate.
Tumblr media
So a Jumper is commonly used on Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) to create connections that modify circuit connections either for fixing electric connections or adapting a PCB for specific requirements. A Jumper Block is used to configure connections for different PCB options consisting of mulitple pins or sockets bridged by shunts to establish those connections. Shunts are used when you want to selectively make or break these connections easily, manually or automatically. Its noted that a card must be punched to affect the flow of current when insterted to the PUNCH CARD SHUNT. Given all this, it seems like this is an upgrade to alchemizing that can affect the core of the system and perhaps more easily automate the creation of new objects.
This is all well and good but that doesnt change the fact Dave does not have a way to punch said cards. So, all that done, Dave goes to install the mystery disk, which in any other circumstance I wouldnt do so casually. While doing so we get to see Rose fighting white Imps with more feline features on LOLAR and that Dave has 3 hours and 41 minutes to destruction.
Tumblr media
The disk turns out to be gristTorrent, which is a version of BitTorrent, to leech some of Johns shale and build grist. Now Ive never used BitTorrent myself, though I have heard of it. It uses peer-to-peer (P2P) protocol to distribute data and files over the internet. Its mostly used for very large files and is faster than standard file downloads in this case. The 'seed', in this case John, hosts and sends the initial file while 'peers', in this case Dave, connect and download the file in parts and then in turn can become seeds for others. Dave initially has a decent download rate of 4 g/s (grist per second) that dips once he starts also leeching Build grist. This is because he is the only connection, as one of the downsides is time it takes to reach full download speed without enough peer connections to offset internet bandwith cost.
This concludes Sam's TEDtalk.
In all honesty, Ive tried to make as much of this as consumable as possible and I hope it helps anyone who is lost on the tech side of things. (im gonna need a tag of this too huh)

Here's some more things I found upon playing all the routes of touhou 20 with Reimu. (well i did try a tiny bit of Marisa). This covers the incidents they reference, shot type granted, assist type, anomaly (main story mode), and dialogue differences I noticed.
SCARLET DEVIL STONE
Incident: Scarlet Mist Incident (EoSD)
Shot type: Needles (lasers for Marisa)
Assist type: Stronger shot when focused.
Anomaly: Forward boost (think Wolf Reimu)
Reimu: I'll punish the one at the sanctuary. Ubame: There's only yamanba and monkeys...
Chimi says: The power in that stone sure is violent. I'm afraid it will anger the master.
Nareko says: It's not a human, it's a nue. If you have a burning passion you should go south.
CREATURE RED STONE (SAME STORY)
Incident: Beast Spirits Incident (WBaWC)?
Shot type: Talismans (missiles for Marisa). The talismans are wide but parallel in focused mode, or forked into a V in unfocused mode.
Assist: Anomaly gauge fills more quickly.
Anomaly: Wide range boost.
SNOW BLOSSOM STONE
Incident: Spring Snow Incident (PCB)
Shot type: Homing shots.
Assist: Stronger shot when unfocused.
Anomaly: Homing boost (think Eagle Reimu).
Reimu: This stone will reclaim the sanctuary. Ubame: No point in bothering, then.
Chimi says: Is it the power of nature in that stone? The master might not like it.
Nareko says: It's not a human, it's a Chimi (demon / mountain spirit, yes, the same as Chimi. It's another murasa-Murasa situation we have, I fear). The stone shines sadly and should go north.
BLUE SEASON STONE (SAME STORY)
Incident: Four Seasons Incident (HSiFS)
Shot type: Backwards shot. (Parallel and options-centered for Reimu, wide and hitbox-centered for Marisa).
Assist: More power-ups.
Anomaly: Everything in the screen behind Reimu was cleared, up to about 3/5ths of the screen. I think the backwards shot was also boosted.
YELLOW SUBTERRANEAN STONE
Incident: Hot Springs Incident (SA)
Shot type: Diagonal talismans in front of Reimu. The options stay far ahead in a straight formation (unfocused) or a pair/triangle/square (focused).
Assist: Grazing may delete bullets.
Anomaly: Miss Barrier (similar to Reisen's shield in LoLK or Eiki's card in UM; you can prevent misses when it's on effect).
Reimu: This stone will purify the sanctuary. Ubame: So you'll pick up the trash?
Chimi says: That stone is quite unsettling. I wonder what the lord will think?
Nareko says: It's not a human, its a mouryou (similar to a chimi). That stone shines beautifully and should go west.
IMPERISHABLE MOON STONE (SAME STORY)
Incident: Eternal Night Incident (IN)
Shot type: Floating options that erase bullets and shoot danmaku that kind of looks like Mayumi's arrows.
Assist: Options may delete bullets.
Anomaly: The screen is cleared on activation.
BEAST HARDNESS STONE
Incident: Nothingness Incident (UDoALG)?
Shot type: Forking eagle shot in each option. Behind Reimu in unfocused, can stay still when focused (think Remilia's shot in IN).
Assist: Attacks against wonder stones are stronger.
Anomaly: Bomb pieces are dropped if you're not hit while it's on effect (similar to Sakuya's bomb in DDC)
Reimu: This stone will reveal the secrets of the sanctuary. Ubame: There's only animals and recluses in here.
Chimi says: Is that stone from God or the Buddha? The lord will be saddened by that stone.
Nareko says: It's not a human, it's a Mujina (badger, tanuki). The anomaly is divine and should go east.
SHINTOISM WIND STONE (SAME STORY)
Incident: Moriya Incident (MoF)
Shot type: Snake shot (it's exactly like Sanae's but now you can make it feel weird by using it as your unfocused shot) (It's frogs for marisa).
Assist: Abnormal attacks are stronger.
Anomaly: A purifying circle will shoot upwards and clear bullets (similar to Clownpiece's card in UM).
FINAL THOUGHTS
I am once again quite happy to play this game. The sheer amount of combinations and customization you can do through the stones is astounding, and they all have good advantages.
I am quite intrigued about the incident pairings, if they even mean anything. EoSD & WBaWC being the violent pair feels on brand, and also the fact that both games are very red-themed. PCB & HSiFS have a sage in them each (as well as a season theming, of course).
SA & IN being together is a surprise, but you might argue that the combination of Old Hell and the Lunarians is unsettling and powerful. And then MoF & UDoALG, I haven't the slightest clue except that they both have Sanae in them.
The last time we only had Reimu and Marisa was in... Subterranean Animism, and even then you could argue against that because the shot types are based on companions. In that case, it would be Mountain of Faith, which feels quite fitting for a parallel.
I insist on the idea that Chimi might have a larger role at some point, considering that Nareko mentions her species AND mentions Nue's species, to whom Chimi might be related in some way.
The stage 3 fairy midboss remains more annoying than any other fight in the game so far. "Oh but Nareko is so hard" no the isn't, she's fun actually.
Favorite themes remain the stage 3 theme, Nareko's theme and Ubami's theme.
Can't wait to see stage 4 and see what the hell is the difference when going into a different entrance (not that Nareko seems to know in the first place).
Marisa update coming soon!

Thy Graphics
A graphics card for the Cactus directly patterned after the OSI-440, with a few modernizations and optimizations.
Tumblr media
I've replaced the eight 2102 SRAM chips with a pair of 2114s. I've also swapped the 2513 character generator ROM with a 2816 EEPROM which gives me not only lower case letters, but pseudo-graphical characters not unlike PETSCII. I've re-implemented the address select logic using modern parts (thank you 74688), and swapped the open-collector NAND gate based video/sync combiner circuit with one I copied from a PET video combiner circuit using 4066 analog switches. I didn't like how vague the delay taps were described, so I added in some jumpers to let the user pick their delay timing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And hooo boy this had some motherfucking BUGS in it.
Vertical sync polarity was backwards.
Video pixel data was inverted too.
In fact, so were the DIP switches for the address select.
I also got half of the 74123 resistor/capacitor inputs backwards due to not paying attention to the idiosyncrasies of the symbols in my old version of KiCAD.
Oh, and the character ROM I stole from my OSI-540B replica has inverted bit order, so the characters looked backwards.
Every single problem I had was due to something being backwards.
Tumblr media
Nothing a little debugging can't fix. Took about 7 hours of tired stumbling with help from friends in the retrotech crew to figure out all the little faults and work around them, but in the end...
Tumblr media
It works! It fucking works! The Cactus has video! I made a fucking video card from scratch! I didn't use any dedicated video chipsets or FPGAs or microcontrollers or CRTCs or any of that shit. I didn't make VGA, I made composite video.
Tumblr media
All 24x24 usable characters on screen in monochrome goodness from this tiny little PCB. Now onto the Rev B design!

Sharing a Computer with More Friends
A few months ago I built an I/O expansion board for my homebrew 68030 project with a 4-port serial card to go with it, and got BASIC running for four simultaneous users. It worked, but not as well as I had hoped. I wanted to be able to run two of those serial cards to support 8 total users, but it had proven unstable enough that with just the one card I had to slow down the whole system to 8MHz.
So I designed a new serial card.
Tumblr media
I had previously been running this computer without any issues at 32MHz with a mezzanine card with FPU & IDE as well as a video card. The main board by itself can clear 56MHz. Having to go all the way down to 8MHz just didn't sit well with me. I want this machine to run as fast as possible for its 8 users.
I put extra time into reviewing worst-case timing for all components and graphing out how signals would propagate. The 16C554 quad UARTs I'm designing around are modern parts that can handle pretty fast bus speeds themselves — easily up to 50MHz with no wait states on the 68030 bus — assuming all the glue logic can get out of the way fast enough.
Signal propagation delays add up quickly.
My first draft schematic used discrete 74-series logic for chip selection, signal decoding, timing, etc. At slower bus speeds this wouldn't have been a problem. But I want this thing to run as fast as possible. By the time critical signals had made it through all those logic gates, I was looking at already being well into one wait state by the time the UART would see a 50MHz bus cycle begin.
I needed something faster. I was also running low on space on the board for all the components I needed. The obvious answer was programmable logic. I settled on the ATF22V10 as a good compromise of speed, size, availability, and programmability. It's available in DIP with gate delays down to 7ns. Where discrete gates were necessary, I selected the fastest parts I could. The final design I came up with showed a worst case timing that would only need one wait state at 50MHz and none for anything slower.
It ended up being a tight fit, but I was able to make it work on a 4-layer board within the same footprint of my main board, putting some components on the back side. (It may look like a bunch of empty space, but there's actually a lot going on running full RS232 with handshaking for 8 ports).
Tumblr media
New problem. I had blown my budget for the project. As much as I love those stacked DE9 connectors, they're expensive. And there's no getting around the $10 pricetag for each of those quad UARTs. Even using parts on-hand where possible, I was looking at a hefty Mouser order.
[jbevren] suggested using ganged RJ45 connectors with the Cisco pinout instead of stacked DE9, to save space & cut costs. [Chartreuse] suggested buffering the TTL serial TX/RX signals to drive the LEDs that are frequently included on PCB-mount RJ45 connectors. Both great ideas. I was able to cut 20% off my parts order and add some nice diagnostic lights to the design.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Two weeks later, I received five new PCBs straight from China. I of course wasted no time setting into starting to assemble one.
I really set myself up for a challenge on this one. I learned to solder some 25 years ago and have done countless projects in that time. But I think this might be the most compact, most heavily populated, most surface mount board I've ever assembled myself. (There are 56 size 0805 (that's 2x1.2mm) capacitors alone!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a few hours soldering, I had enough assembled to test the first serial port. If the first port worked then the other three on that chip should work too, and there's a great chance the other chip would work as well.
Tumblr media
And it did work! After some poking around with the oscilloscope to make sure nothing was amiss, I started up the computer and it ran just fine at 8MHz.
And at 16MHz.
And at 25MHz.
And at 32MHz.
And at 40MHz.
And almost at 50MHz!
Remember what I said about my timing graphs showing one wait state for 50MHz? The computer actually booted up and ran just fine at 50MHz. The problem was when I tried typing in a BASIC program certain letters were getting switched around, and try as I might, BASIC just refused to 'RQN' my program. It was pretty consistently losing bit 3, likely from that signal having to travel just a tiny bit farther than the others. A problem that will probably be resolved with an extra wait state.
Good enough for a first test! A few hours more and I finished assembling the card.
Tumblr media
I did have some problems with cleaning up flux off the board, and I had to touch up a few weak solder joints, but so far everything seems to be working. I've updated my little multi-user kernel to run all 8 users from this new card and it's running stable at 40MHz.
I need to update my logic on the 22V10 to fix a bug in the wait state generator. I would love to see this thing actually running at 50MHz — a 25% overclock for the 40MHz CPU I am currently running. I also want to expand my little kernel program to add some new features like the ability to configure the console serial ports and maybe even load programs from disk.
I hope to bring this machine with a collection of terminals and modems this June to VCF Southwest 2025 for an interactive exhibit that can be dialed into from other exhibits at the show.
