How Trauma Shapes Astarion’s Response to Cazador

NB! Videos might contain spoilers. Let's talk about Astarion's reaction to Cazador in two very different narrative contexts—his spawn route and his ascended route. In his spawn route, when Tav asks how Astarion is feeling in the aftermath of Cazador's death, the question is neutral and grounded in concern. It's not judgemental. It's an invitation to reflect—offered gently by someone he trusts. And his response is layered: he feels good, but also confused, scared, nervous. He's elated and free, but unsure of what comes next. He speaks of Cazador as a closed chapter—a source of pain, yes, but one that can finally fade into the past. There is space here for vulnerability, for honesty, for healing. Cazador is evoked as a memory, not a weapon.

"And? How does it feel?" Now contrast that with his ascended route, specifically the moment when Tav compares Astarion to Cazador. This reference to Cazador comes at a moment of extreme emotional intensity. The comparion isn't neutral. It isn't compassionate. It is an accusation. It frames Astarion not as a survivor of abuse, but as a perpetrator. It equates his reclaimed power with the cruelty of the very figure who dehumanized him for centuries.

"Are you really Astarion? Or are you just a new Cazador?" His response is rage. Long-term abuse—especially the kind Astarion endured—doesn't disappear just because the perpetrator is gone. It reshapes the mind. It rewires the emotional response system. Survivors often learn to suppress, compartmentalize, or even speak casually about their trauma in order to function—but certain triggers remain volatile. Being compared to an abuser is one of the most powerful of those triggers. It attacks the survivor's sense of identity, dignity, and growth. It reinforces the very self-hatred they've fought to escape. Astarion's reaction is not disproportionate. It is consistent with someone who has lived under constant coercion, humiliation and pain. His lashing out is not heartless—it is defensiveness. It is fear, grief, and betrayal, weaponized by a traumatized mind trying to protect itself. Importantly, this exact pattern can be seen in a scene restored from Early Access, too. When Cazador is brought up as an insult, he reacts with immediate hostility. This is not new behavior. This is established, intentional characterization of a person shaped by sustained psychological abuse.

Pointing to the scene in his ascended route as evidence that Astarion "never loved Tav" or "has no empathy" fundamentally misunderstands how trauma manifests. This kind of take reduces a deeply complex, deliberately written character into a morality scorecard—and ignores the brutal realities of abuse recovery. There is an alarming tendency to glorify trauma survivors only when they're soft, meek, or endlessly forgiving. But the moment a survivor expresses anger, self-protective behavior, or anything "ugly", they're demonized. That is not compassion. That is performative empathy. Astarion is not evil for struggling with his trauma. He is not monstrous for having learned to bite back when cornered. He is a survivor. And survivors don't always respond in ways that are comfortable to witness.

You were THERE for the original, you KNOW the purpose of the scene, but to reiterate:

Hiccup knows TOOTHLESS is harmless, but this scene confirms to him that other dragons also are, it drives home the point

It doesn't drag the pacing, it gives a much needed break after the very exciting fast paced sequence that is Test Drive, so the audience can process. That's kinda how scripts and pacing works

Also it kinda, sorta, GIVES HICCUP THE KNOWLEDGE NEEDED TO DEFEAT THE RED DEATH. HE STILL FIRES INTO HER MOUTH IN THE LA BUT HE NEVER LEARNS DRAGONS AREN'T FIREPROOF ON THE INSIDE. HE JUST KINDA, GUESSES, I ASSUME

BUT THIS TWO MINUTE SCENE JUST WOULD'VE BEEN SOOOOO DETRIMENTAL TO THE PACING YEAH, YEAH ABSOLUTELY THE MOVIE IS SO MUCH BETTER WITHOUT IT (sarcasm, just in case)

On Taash being the 'self-insert'

Something that really bothered me about a lot of the comments from bigoted grifters that Veilguard initially got was that Taash was a self-insert because they're non-binary and are one of the very rare 'firebreather' qunari and I'm like are you serious? Of all the characters in this game, Taash is your pick for the 'self-insert'?

Need I remind you of:

The super sweet country girl dwarf who reconnects to her titan ancestry by picking up a magic dagger and unlocks the ancient earth magic that her people have been blocked off from for millennia, and manages to stave off the destructive rage-filled heart of said titan?

The Inigo-Montoya-looking-ahh coffee addict and basically assassin royalty who has a demon inside him that gives him pretty purple wings so he can fly, on first meeting him manages to tear through a prison full of his blood mage captors without getting a single hair out of place or blood on his perfectly tailored purple Ezio Auditore coat?

The woodsy monster-hunting grey warden chad and the only grey warden that gets to bond with a griffon (which have been extinct for centuries) manages to kill an archdemon and survive because plot armour?

Like dude, be fr, Taash did nothing wrong, you're just a bigot.

It is so unbelievably frustrating how the algorithm timeline keeps defaulting in a place that has been free of algo bullshit for so long. I cannot tell if it’s a glitch or if they’re just pushing it intentionally. It’s at least easy to go back to the following feed, but with bluesky users more and more depending on the discover feed and tumblr defaulting to the algorithm timeline it just feels like ‘be twitter’ is the shitty destiny being pushed everywhere.
