(Background lore) The Warband

The specific group of Heretic Astartes our Heldrake-chan is part of is quite an oddball even by heretic standards. The Alpha Legion at its core is already unusual, so it is no surprise that their offshoot that goes among others by the name of "Ratatoskr" does not even see itself primarely as a military force.

Their operatives place themselves in other Chaos Warbands, often in the open in direct agreement with the leadership of said groups (although you can always assume that there are twice the number of operatives in the warband than command is officially aware of) that follows a simple deal: services for a share of the group's spoils and/or favours.

These services come im multiple forms, such as strategic advice, or providing stealth-focussed operatives to groups lacking such specialization for certain missions, but the #1 selling point is the informations- and communications network. Due to being spread in so many Chaos Warbands they get to hear a bunch of stuff. It is said that a rumor among Ratatoskr operatives travels faster accross the galaxy than an astropathic message, and that is not overselling it.

How do they achieve that? The key is their specialization on "blades cutting through reality" - watered down knock-off versions of the famous "Athame" blade. In untrained hands they can generate a tactical advantage of teleporting the user a small distance, but in the hands of a Ratatoskr operative it allows a small group of people to warp-jump between nearby systems if certain conditions are met.

The smaller the rift, the less effort is necessary. Spaceships need a giant warp drive. Humans in a group need a powerful sorcerer to transport them. But a message etched into a tiny metal ball the size of a marble? That's something anyone can do with the right tools and training - and so information flows, without leaving a trail on the vox or in the noosphere, by pebbles getting tossed short distances through the warp and being passed on. Distances are often measured in "Cuts", as in "How many cuts through reality do I need to reach my destination?".

(This is also why they do not have much of a problem with one of their Heldrakes having gone humanoid. She is now smaller, so she can use smaller portals. It is a tactical advantage!)

This information network is used to coordinate other Chaos Warbands, sometimes with their knowledge, sometimes without. Naturally there is quite a bit of diplomacy involved. They got quite good at, which in an unlikely chain of casualty led to them having possibly the biggest force of Heldrakes of any Warband their size at their command. Heldrakes are proud and highly territorial creatures, but due to the diplomatic abilities of the group they managed to have several dozen of them voluntarely put up with the others of their kind while living in the group's ships. Unleashing them in orbital battles instead of regular fighter aircraft has a devastating effect.

To keep up with their dear drakes the active fighting force of the warband leans heavily on wings and jump-packs, although they for the most part just use what they can get: the "Emergency Exfiltration Unit" for example is 10 Terminators getting their movement amplified by a Sorcerer so they can keep up with other airborne units.

The relationship of the Warband and the Warp is tedious to say the least. They use it a lot, and that draws attention, and there is nothing Alpha Legion Astartes hate more than that. Once Tzeentch tried to meddle with their messaging system so they teleported ("cut") a captured Culexus Assassin directly into the Scheme-God's crystaline sanctum. The relationship has been slightly hostile ever since...

Angels are trying to not communicate with the Moon too much, otherwise they believe that they'll get corrupt. Although there has only been one such case in history…

Personality

By his peers, Diaval is often considered a reserved and mysterious person, especially because of the circumstance of being one of the closest people to the Housewarden of Diasomnia. Despite this reputation, Diaval proves himself to be a caring individual and a good person to talk to, should the subject interest him.

In his own way, he has a habit of guiding people when necessary and, lately, he has been gaining a better reputation and maintaining a good relationship with his classmates. However, despite maintaining a calm and helpful demeanor towards others, Diaval can be quite proud if mocked or challenged, as well as having confidence in his own abilities.

Diaval is a good strategist, preferring to analyze a situation behind the scenes first before taking action. With this in mind, it's not too surprising that he often prefers to analyze the people around him before deciding whether or not an interaction would be beneficial for him, as well as he can also be considered a great resource to find 🫣gossip🫣 about NRC.

He can be quite vengeful, as well as quick to return a just favor. Very remorseful with people he doesn't like or who have done him wrong, but also do everything for those he holds dear. In fact, despite appearing to be logical most of the time, Diaval can be really emotional, especially with people he loves or when he feels vulnerable…

and REALLY restless when something he does goes wrong

Overall, Diaval is observant, introvert and sometimes reserved. However, he also has an ease in communicating with the people around him and is being seen interacting much more with his colleagues lately. Diaval also has difficulty talking about things that affect him, but he can show himself to be a good person to talk to and a great friend, even assuming a responsible attitude for those who need.

And he's also a big worrier for his friends.

If you're wondering why I'm not posting much like usual, Welp I've been focusing on Ramadan and the first week has been really exhausting (body is trying to adapt and I also had to do some big stuff too).

Anyways, I've been designing an occultist OC for LA-KiY. I won't share much yet, but this is Richard Joy, a sculptor and The King's current High Priest.

A doodle and lore dumb for the lamb and goat!! (Btw this is all subject to change once I actually start my 2nd play through)

So in my little headcannon the goat and lamb are still mirror images of each other with the same build and height but are very very different personalities wise.

My lamb’s much milder then the goat and even though he’s good at fighting he only does so when he need to (as in he only goes into the dungeons when it’s necessary for quests and such). He leads his cult with a kind and gentle hand, and mainly focuses on maintaining his base and caring for his followers post game. His flock absolutely adore him and aren’t afraid to come up and talk to him or just hang out with him.

The goat on the other hand is a loud mouth and a bit meaner than the lamb. Sure he cares for his flock but he’s not quick to give them gifts or do anything special for them like the lamb is. His cult lowkey fears him but also admire his strength and determination. When it comes to fighting he’s all for it, even continuing to go through the dungeons and purgatory in the post game even when he doesn’t really need to. At this point it’s just a fun pass time.

Now on to their Narinders!

They’re also sort of mirror images with the goat’s narinder (who I’m gonna call Indy) being somewhat kinder than the lamb’s. He’s also fucking hugeeee since after the goat defeats the bishops and frees Indy instead of demanding his crown back he thanks the goat and acknowledges his hardwork, letting him keep the crown and the cult. The goat offers him a place at his side instead of as a follower which allows Indy to keep some of his power and his size.

The lamb’s Narinder is pretty close to the cannon Narinder personality wise and keeps up his grumpiness even after forgiving the lamb. He and the lamb do end up together but Narinder swears he’s only indulging the lamb in hopes of gaining his trust and eventually over throwing him (he’s lying. He’s just not used to someone being so sweet to him anymore) (also I really wanted to mention that the reason he’s in a pink picnic attire is bc the lamb he should wear something pretty bc he thinks he’s pretty. (The meta reason is bc I thought it was hilarious and he’s currently wearing it in my game lol)

Since Ichigo dies at about 15, and Hatake get their marks at like 14? what do her clan markings look like? 👀

OHHH OK THIS IS ACTUALLY A WHOLE THING, SO,

Ichigo got moon stripes !! It's also known as the story teller stripes, and is the traditional tattoos of the Hatake clan's religious leader and story keeper. Which Ichigo does end up in training to become!

There's actually a bit of drama with the fact that Yuki, the current clan shaman, is so old (she's in her 70's, which is basically like being in her 120's for a shinobi), and she's only now picking an apprentice in Ichigo.

Yuki did actually have an apprentice before, who was fully trained and set up to take up the position whenever Yuki died— but they were one of the 5 Hatake to die to illness the winter before the Hatake were summoned to iron court (which is the event that got the ball rolling on the Hatake joining Konoha a year or two later)

Yuki settled on Ichigo being her next apprentice relatively quickly after that, but wouldn't actually tell anyone about it for some more years— stubbornly staying quiet on the topic even when pressed with increasingly stressed and worried questions about it. Ichigo was only about 8 at the time, but Yuki set to training her just a little bit under the table

It was easy enough, when Ichigo was always happy to listen to her stories and gossip about past and present events. Ichigo kind of ended up soaking in a lot of things she'd be expected to learn in the role (religious rights / mythos of spirits and gods / traditions and why they do them / stories passed down through the family / etc.) naturally throughout the years.

Finally, Ichigo turned 14 and lead her first hunt— the marker of a Hatake coming of age. Afterwards, it was Yuki's job to give her the stripes Yuki deemed to 'fit her best,' which is ofc when she gave her the moon stripes and officially announced her plans with a "teehee congrats <3"

It wasn't actually too much of a surprise to those who'd been paying attention to what had been going on, but still caught some off guard. Ichigo had been "training" for like, 6 whole years at that point, without even realizing it. So she was honestly pretty well into her education on the roll, and would probably only need a few more years afterwards to be deemed officially ready to take it on

But then ofc, she dies a year later. And Yuki dies in very quick succession. (Losing her third apprentice, and so old already, had done terrible things to her heart and spirit) And with both of them went a very large portion of the clans history.

Others in the clan, of course, still knew plenty. Yuki's teachings had not been for Ichigo alone, and many had sat by her side and listened to her stories as well. But no single person knew as much as they had or had been in the same position of authority to do things like honoring the spirits of their ancestors or assigning Hatake stripes to their young.

In their deaths, Haruka had to take up many of their duties, mostly by default via being the highest other figure of respect in that regard. But they lost a lot.

There's some sort of interesting point to be made that the Hatake's religious leader wears tattoos that symbolize a red moon. And that Kaguya-hime is among the gods they pay respects to.

I don't really have any real thoughts on it other than going "hmm." and writing that down to reference later, but like !! That's something

anyways Yuki herself is also pretty cute, I find myself enjoying her immensely, so take this art I drew for her the other day that I've been looking for an excuse to post:
