“Malika: A New Hope Amid Hardships”
Our family eagerly awaited the arrival of our granddaughter, and today, Malika, our beautiful baby girl, has arrived, but in circumstances more difficult than we could have imagined. She was born amidst the ongoing struggles in Gaza, where we had hoped her birth would mark the beginning of a new chapter of hope.
Malika, whose name means “angel,” came to us as a symbol of hope in the midst of pain, as if she were a message from above that better days may be near. Unfortunately, Malika hasn’t been able to get the milk she needs from her mother due to a lack of nutrition. Therefore, we urgently need to provide her with formula milk, which has become increasingly expensive.
Additionally, we are facing significant challenges in obtaining diapers, as their prices have soared more than twenty times what they used to be. Currently, we are covering her with a simple towel due to the high cost of blankets, which isn’t sufficient to keep her warm in the harsh weather.

A couple weeks after the adoption was finalized, Taemin perked up in his bedroom when he heard the door to the apartment open.
“Did you find Gogurt?” he calls, shuffling out of his room. “‘Cause I’m not eating that Activia shit you have in the fridge! That’s for old people who can’t poop!”
He fully expects to find Jinki there scoffing at him for making an old man joke again, perhaps holding grocery bags still, but instead he finds a random stranger smirking back at him.
“You must be Taemin.”
“Who the hell are you?” Taemin snaps, and he scoots closer to the kitchen counter, quickly grabbing a plastic spatula to hold out in front of him.
“I take it your dad’s not home?”
“Get out!” Taemin shrieks, holding the spatula out with both hands.
Then the door opens again, and Jinki walks through with his arms full of shopping bags.
“Taemin! I thought I told you to lock the door when I left?” he calls, still looking down as he kicks off his shoes.
Taemin’s eyes are darting between Jinki and the stranger still smirking by the couch, and when Jinki looks up, he looks confused as he spots Taemin holding a spatula like that.
“What are you doing? Is this some teenage fad thing?”
That’s when the stranger laughs loudly, and Jinki jumps and looks towards the couch.
“Jesus, Kibum! You’re gonna make me drop my groceries!” Jinki whines, and he quickly deposits the bags on the table. “Taemin, help me put this stuff away. And put that spatula back.”
“Who is this guy?” Taemin squeaks. “Why’s he got a key to your apartment? I locked the door when you left!”
“This is Kibum,” Jinki says. “He’s my friend. Kibum, this is Taemin, my new kid.”
“Is he your boyfriend?”
Jinki and Kibum both laugh loudly, and Taemin pouts and slams the spatula back into the jar on the kitchen counter.
“No,” Jinki laughs. “Now come put your Gogurt away.”
Taemin huffs and frowns as dramatically as possible, but he does help put the groceries away without complaint. But when Kibum starts snooping through the grocery bags, Taemin frowns again and swipes the whole bag away, glaring at him the entire time as he slides over to the fridge.
It makes Jinki chuckle to himself, because Kibum looks so affronted at finally finding someone who challenges him. This is almost exactly what Jinki was hoping would happen when Taemin finally met Kibum.
“I came to see if you and your new child wanted to have dinner with me and Minho tonight,” Kibum says in an airy voice, sitting at the table and waving a hand in the air. “But if your precious boy is too sensitive-”
“I am not sensitive!”
“Can you not antagonize a literal twelve-year-old?” Jinki asks, giving Kibum a pointed look. Taemin stays hidden behind the refrigerator door, but pokes his head out just enough to stick his tongue out at Kibum. When Jinki is busy putting pasta in the cupboard, Kibum sticks his tongue out right back. They’re both making faces at each other when Jinki turns back around and huffs at both of them. Then he taps the top of Taemin’s head and says in as stern a voice as he can muster, “Knock it off.”
Taemin sticks his tongue out at him too, but then ducks his head and goes back to putting groceries away. Kibum, meanwhile, just laughs obnoxiously.
“You’re such a dad already,” he laughs, leaning back in the chair.
“Just what time did you want us to come over for dinner?” Jinki asks, ignoring the thinly veiled insult.
“Six-ish.”
“Six?” Taemin scoffs. “For dinner? Is this the old people special?”
Jinki tries really hard to hide a laugh behind a cough, but he doesn’t succeed very well. Kibum just balks at the boy.
“You’ve adopted a hoodlum.”
“Thank you,” Taemin says in a snotty tone.
“Enough,” Jinki sighs.
Taemin giving Kibum a run for his money is both entertaining and exhausting at the same time. Jinki doesn’t know if he should laugh or scold someone. Either way, Kibum leaves after stealing a string cheese from the fridge, and Taemin pouts at him for agreeing to go to dinner.
“You need to meet your uncles anyway,” Jinki tells him. “They’re my best friends. And Kibum is the one who first said I needed to adopt you anyway.”
“Really?” Taemin asks in a soft voice, sticking a Gogurt in his mouth as he watches Jinki over the back of the couch.
“Yep,” Jinki tells him. “But it’s hilarious that you sass him right back. He can be so full of himself sometimes. He needs a kid like you to knock some sense into him.”
Taemin smirks around his Gogurt and then flops back down on the couch, watching whatever show he turned on TV.
Come six o’clock, Taemin is standing at Jinki’s side as they wait for someone to open the door of an apartment a few blocks away. He has his best button-up shirt on, and he’s fidgeting with the hem and bouncing from foot to foot.
“If they have a key to your place, why don’t you have one for their’s?”
“I do have one,” Jinki says. “That doesn’t mean it’s not still rude to just invite yourself inside.”
“Kibum invited himself inside.”
“Kibum can be rude.”
Taemin giggles a bit just as the door opens, and he shuffles to hide a bit behind Jinki as a tall man opens the door and smiles.
“It’s your new kid!” he exclaims. “You can call me Uncle Minho!”
“Okay,” Taemin mumbles.
Jinki just puts a hand on Taemin’s back and guides him inside. When they get to the living room where a little cheese and cracker platter is sitting on a coffee table, Taemin sends a sarcastic smirk of a smile in Kibum’s direction. Kibum sends one right back.
“So what do you guys want to drink?” Minho asks, either oblivious or purposely ignoring the way Taemin and Kibum are acting. “Taemin, do you want a soda?”
“Okay,” Taemin mumbles, still sticking close to Jinki.
It’s a long evening of Taemin somehow being both shy and sassy. If he’s not clinging to Jinki like a lifeline, he’s making faces at Kibum while he thinks no one else is looking. What’s more exhausting to Jinki is that Kibum makes faces right back.
Somehow, Taemin still fits into their little family dynamic like a missing puzzle piece.
