Since you're clearly a ttrpg enjoyer, do you have any stand out moments from games you were a character in, that live Rent free in your head?
God sorry anon, this took me forever to answer this cause picking one is an eternal struggle, so I just went with the most recent campaign.
Right now I'm in a group doing this kinda wacky kinda metaphysical kinda horror planescape module and my character is this useless nepo baby elf bard that's got a dead planar philosopher stuck in his head. The philosopher character is like a mix of Diogenes and Slavoj Žižek, but if they were a fucked up old lady. It plays kinda Disco Elysium coded, but if instead of 24 semi-useful skills you had one horrid old hag who sporadically takes over to be a societal nuisance.
It's really fun to play in general, but my fav moment was when the party went to a high end philosophical debate and we needed a diversion. The philosopher part was immediately like "say less" and dragged the bard part up on the stage to do some choice Diogenes prop comedy by pulling up whatever junk they had in their bag and being like "behold, a [previously sloppily defined concept]!" while the party goblin and aasimar did like high-stealth low-acrobatics circus act in the background trying to steal the debate notes. Peak shenanigans.
#deliberately keeping things a bit vague cause I don't want to spoil the module for others#big kudos to our DM for adapting to our BS#if you want me to be really annoying you gotta ask me about larp stories tho

book Murderbot likes its humans when they possess functioning self preservation skills, more or less. tv murderbot grows to like its humans despite their magnificent incompetence and frankly even when its humans are capable it doesn't get to see them being so. much to consider about this
#'my clients are the best clients' in ASR vs 'their assistance was anoying at best and a liability at worst but I kinda appreciated it's#something about like. TV murderbot feels more. Emotionally Motivated? I have many more thoughts on this but the words haven't found me#like something about seeing it externally Vs hearing its inner monologue creates an impression of a subtly different person#at least to me. in all my wisdom.#mine#book Murderbot appreciates competence! its traumas are in large part associated with a crushing sense of responsibility!#its presaux clients being able and willing to take care of themselves is p important in them developing a reciprocal relationship#which is. just kinda way less true for show presaux. murderbot and presaux there have like a legitimately insane power dynamic and I mean#DYNAMIC. like it is property but they will die without it. murderbot says that it's cheap and an old model but we don't FEEL that how we can#FEEL the impact of its education modules being shitty. like there's this sense that its clients being experienced field academics means they#have a legitimate skillset as a crew that is different and complementary to the skillset murderbot has.#and like. that's all without even brushing over the whole 'im asking you to keep your helmet down' Vs 'im advising you of the impact your#helmet choices will have' and like the internal fighting to abide by that to be understood and integrated Vs the eye contact torture scene.#yknow? there's something here. there's like a butterfly effect of adaptation happening here.

eeeeh idk how i feel about the murderbot tv adaptation guys, it's just not hitting right for me.
i will continue to give it the benefit of the doubt and see where they take the rest of the season but i feel like the showrunners have made a weird choice to make the whole vibe more silly and low stakes and as a result every character, including murderbot, comes across like incredibly incompetent and kind of pathetic?
i've seen some discussion about whether you think the show's versions of the characters are 'cringe' as being some kind of litmus test. but to me i think the way the show itself frames its characterisations of the characters is what's adding the cringe factor.
instead of having a bunch of great characters who have different perspectives and backgrounds and motivations etc. that audience can see parts of themselves in but also that drive the plot forward and tell us more about the world they're in, it feels like the show has stripped all the characters down to caricatures or quirks and then makes them seem almost apologetic about it? like all the time? kind of like the characters themselves are embarrassed and the point is that we're supposed to laugh at them for being weird. which i guess there is some element of that in the book, but it was usually always at murderbot's expense and instead in the show it feels weirdly mean spirited.
idk i feel like somehow i'm being made fun of as someone who loved the books and liked that the characters are all really different and sometimes that was beneficial and sometimes that's a challenge but all the time that's just how they are and the narrative didn't apologise for it and that's the whole point, y'know?
#obviously everyone interprets things differently#and some of it will come down to personal preference#but i feel like all the things i really loved about the books have been stripped out#or changed in a way that i'm not entirely convinced is beneficial to the whole experience#i think they did a great job with casting and set and costume design#and leebeebee is a useful addition to shortcut some of murderbot's internal exposition#but idk i think the books have a great sense of deadpan humour and really loveable characters#and idk. i sometimes find the show kind of difficult to watch#but again!! that's just my perspective#and i know it's hard to adapt books into shows#especially ones so reliant on first person narration#and i appreciate that they've had to do some kit-bashing of characters to make the preservationaux crew smaller#but i just feel like they've missed the mark#like why is mensah so debilitatingly anxious?#how are you supposed to be convincing a new audience that she's an effective leader of a whole ass planet??#and murderbot couldn't hack the combat override chip?#and now with that last episode being like 'i actually love killing!'#literally the WHOLE POINT of murderbot's name is that it knows it was built to be a killer and it hacked it's governor module because#that's not all it wants to be. so it's name is a reminder and also a fuck you to the company. it's like it is anyway suckas#it's an ironic and sardonic nickname#idk the tone just feels off to me#but we'll see!#and plenty of people seem to be enjoying it so maybe i'm just not the target audience#tmbd#paxtxt

just remembered what I think is probably my favorite dnd moment I’ve had to date. in my curse of strahd campaign, we had just left ravenloft after having dinner with strahd, and escher followed us out into the woods. as we were talking to him, falkon showed up. immediately I sense a ~vibe~, so I asked to do an insight check. I rolled really poorly and as my dm started to tell me I wasn’t sure what was going on I was like “wait okay the reason I asked is because I’m trying to figure out if they’re in love with each other. do I get advantage because I’m gay?” fully expecting her to say no. but to my dismay she said yes, so I rolled again. and got a nat 20. they were indeed gay. gaydar so powerful god granted me advantage and a crit success
#we have yet to encounter them again but they are everything to me#I swear I will reunite those long lost gay lovers if it’s the last thing I do#we had previously met falkon and I was already invested in him and the wereravens because my character is a werewolf#my lil lesbian werewolf will do everything in her power to help this gay wereraven and his vampire spawn boyfriend#I will say I definitely don’t trust escher but like idec#but like if he ends up being evil I will be emotionally devastated absbdbnfnf#curse of strahd#curse of strahd spoilers#it should also be noted my dm has adapted and changed a lot within the module so I have no idea if this is canon normally lol#dnd#dungeons and dragons

i started reading arthur conan doyle a study in scarlet and the amount of times john refers to sherlock as a bloodhound or some other type of dog. oh i am going to be so abnormal about this
#dog motifing on the timeline as per!!!!#i started reading it partially bc im doing a module in uni about the 19th century and this is a very good text to explore that with#but i also started reading it because i want to judge house md's merit as a sherlock holmes adaptation. why lie.#sherlock holmes

Not me taking inspiration from fucking unbreakable kimmy schmidt when planning ttrpg villains
#mine#in which I am cringe#I wanna get into running stuff in other settings and like adapting modules and stuff#I don't expect it to be less work but I think it could at least be less of a barrier to things being finished#still wanna maintain my own campaign world but I wanna start pulling from other stuff soon#and having diversions into entirely different stories#I wanna run some ravenloft/domains of dread campaigns#and I just think it would be so fun to run Ivana Boritsi in a way modeled after Dierdre Robespierre#she was the other rich wife who Jaqueline was in competition with#who got like Really Intense about it and kind of obsessive#all 'this will be my greatest challenge you might be the one to actually take me down'#tina fey writes a lot of misses but the Robespierre arc was such a vibe#if you read through the Boritsi's description in the guide to ravenloft you can see where I'm coming from#she's written as being extremely skilled at subterfuge and intrigue but also being very bored of it#and I feel like if I ran a campaign of courtly intrigue in that setting and had a pc or party who stood to threaten her position#she'd probably end up absolutely relishing in it and might even have the same reaction to being defeated that Robespierre did in UKS
