Another snippet from my Flipping the Coin au. Probably won’t make it into the actual fic, but I’ve been obsessed with these two and keep finding myself writing moments like this ^^
Mordred was sprawled over Arthur’s chest, with his thumb tucked in his mouth, and blue eyes serious as he listened to the story with the gravity of a judge. The two of them are slumped in their favorite armchair, the red velvet blotchy from numerous spilled drinks, sticky snacks, and misguided attempts at crafts. It was too warm for a fire, but in the dim evening, with the lone table lamp for light and the window cracked open for a breath of air, it took Arthur back to countless evenings spent in another room. One built of stone and lit only by candle flame.
Aloud, Arthur read, “Because he was the king…”
Personally, it wasn’t his favorite retelling, but Mordred had seen his name on the cover and insisted on hearing it, so he had conceded. Maybe he should’ve waited until Mordred was older before telling him that there were stories about characters who shared their names, but in these last few years, the events from long ago had been so close to mind Arthur had wanted to share it. He assumed Mordred would fixate on the sword fighting and tournaments. Instead, Mordred had picked a book that started with babies being sent out to sea.
“Two by two, he carried—“
Mordred pulled his thumb out of his mouth. “Did you really do that?”
“No.” Arthur marked his spot with a finger and ruffled the thick, black curls. Still damp from the bath, they were in need of a comb. And soon, if Arthur hoped to avoid dealing with tangles. “I never did that.” Dipping his fingers to tickle the back of Mordred’s neck, he smiled as Mordred giggled and tried to escape. “I could never.”
Sitting up, Mordred’s knobby limbs found all of Arthur’s soft spots as he settled knees first on top of Arthur’s chest. “If you had to, could you?”
“Would you,” Arthur automatically corrected.
“Would I?” Mordred’s pitch went comically high. “Nooooooo! Would you!”
Arthur gave him a look, one that Mordred immediately leaned in and mimicked with a giggle. “Would I, Arthur Penn, a man far removed from the ancient past, cast a boat full of babies into the ocean? Absolutely not.”
“What if Merlin told you to?”
He’d never had to. History hadn’t played out like that. But Arthur couldn’t tell his young son that he definitely knew it hadn’t happened because he couldn’t even explain his own past and all that entailed. All Mordred knew was that his father was named after King Arthur, so that meant he’d been named after Mordred. Because they were father and son and that was how it was supposed to be. He didn’t know that in another life they hadn’t been related and that the first time Merlin met Mordred he had helped save him.
“Nope.” Arthur popped the ‘p’. Out of Mordred’s sight, he set the book on the ground. It was time for a better story anyway. “Not even then.”
“What if Merlin did it?”
“Listen, let me tell you about the—“ He almost said ‘the Mordred I knew’ but luckily stopped. Instead, he says, “—the story I heard. It took place when Uther was still king. The first time Arthur met Mordred he was only a little boy…”

5, 10, 20, and 25 for fic in review ask thing!!!
5. What ships captured your heart?
I am a gen writer through and through, so it's a very rare thing to see me writing a ship-focused fic. That said, I really enjoyed the pairing of Karlach and Astarion this year, though I wouldn't say I shipped them necessarily in a romantic sense. The fic I wrote that had them together had their relationship tagged '(it's fairly ambigious; is it romantic? queerplatonic? platonic? yes), (the love and devotion is there regardless)' which I think basically sums up how I view them (and also how aromantic I am about shipping 😅).
I also liked Billford, but in a strictly 'oh yeah they're super divorced, they are never getting back together' kind of way. Not sure if that counts as shipping, but hey, it's definitely counts as something.
10. What fic was the most satisfying to write?
I would have to say either 'The Poetics of Space' (Gravity Falls) or 'On Waxen Wings We Soar, In Spite of Inevitable Ends' (Baldur's Gate 3). They were the two fics I was the most happiest with this year, not only regarding the quality of the writing itself and the themes they explored (the constance of change not only in the world but also ourselves, and finding joy in and making peace with the time you have left), but also how they tied everything together in their conclusions. Both of them equally made me feel a 'wow..I did that' feeling of accomplishment when I finished them, so yeah, they both were absolutely the most satisfying to write.
20. Share your funniest line.
Being more of angst-based writer kinda limits my collection of comedic lines (even my more comedic story this year was extremely angsty), but there was one line I wrote this year that got a couple comments about it making the reader laugh, so I'll go with that one (because if two people found it funny, surely it must be, right):
“You try fixing an interdimensional portal for thirty years without learning physics," (Stanley) said. "I know what quarks are now. Do you know how much I hate knowing what quarks are.”
25. How did you recharge between fics?
Usually I'd spend the first few days after finishing a fic trying to figure out the what the heck to do with the spare time I had previously allocated to writing said fic, and then once I figured that out (and had yet to be overcome with the urge to write something else), I'd probably watch a TV show, read a book, play video games, and do some art. I'm boring like that.
Send me a number!
#ask#ask game#writer ask game#writing stuff#fanfic stuff#thanks for the numbers/questions friend!#and sorry for the slight delay in answering! my day was a bit busier than i expected#here's some extra stuff for each question because tags allow for more silly additions:#i'm weird in that my favourite ships are those that don't kiss on the lips/have on-screen sex. and not in a will-they-won't-they kind of wa#just...love expressed in a way that can't be easily catergorised by the oft black-and-white fandom view of romantic-or-platonic#why's it gotta be one or the other. can't it be one AND the other. can't it be neither. can't it be anything you want it to be?#which is to say i'm super hecking aroace and man QPRs are cool aren't they?#my basis for satisfying fic: the themes i myself wrote to be emotional turned on me and made *me* emotional. in a good way#and also if someone loves it enough to make fanart about it which did happen with 'on waxen wings'.#a lot of my comedic lines in my *actually* comedic fic were only funny because of set up in the paragraphs leading up to them#so alas they didn't fit the bill. but shoutout to my socialist ducks. you will always be funny to me#the recharge question is funny because for me my relationship with writing and my free time essentially sums up to this:#me when i'm writing: arggh so much writing. when i finish this I'll have more time to catch up on i want to watch/play/read/listen to#me when i'm not writing: ...i miss writing :( *proceeds to not catch up on most of things i wanted to watch/play/read/listen to*#and that's it! thanks again for the ask! :D

15 Lines Challenge
Rules: Share 15 or fewer lines of dialogue from an OC, ideally lines that capture their character/personality/vibe. Bonus points for just using the dialogue without other details about the scene, but you’re free to include those as well. @fablewritesnonsense strikes again! As always, no pressure, I just really admire these lovely folk's work: @helena-bug @just-another-wasteland-merc @roystory4 @druidgroves @heylittleriotact
(I'm going to be completely honest, I'm working of off 5 incomplete scenes if I just do BG3, so I'm also going to throw in some By Any Other Name quotes. It's technically the same character from a different story. The backstories vary a little but I'm confident the character is still there. By Any Other Name quotes are marked with an asterisk * at the end)
Wynleth Reiden
“Lathander isn’t going to strike me down if I don’t stop and kneel."
“Are you stupid?”
“Of course I’m not going to kill you!”
“And I’m still not sure you are actually what I think you are or just some freak with filed teeth and a biting kink!”
“My faith is entirely a different matter.”
“I am going to drown myself in the Chionthar.”
“It is precisely because you are a depraved beast that you get the juiciest gossip.”
“Yes, good sex!”
“I was married, he died… fifty-four years ago come Mirtul?”
“I- I think I need to be alone for a bit. I need to pray. I need to do something or I’m going to fall apart.”
“Is that why I took up the role of a garden water feature when I tried to dominate it?"
“Becoming a Paladin, beginning a life in politics, was how I could take control back. I never had a connection to Lathander like you did. I didn’t find him when I lost. He was never there for me in my darkest moments. He was forced upon me because it was expected . He inundates every single one of the worst moments in my life. Because of them .” *
"Here, every second of every day is focused on the words and what they mean and it's been like that for centuries. We are like an ouroboros. The dogma is causing us to consume ourselves.” *
"You are a soldier with faith, I am a priest sent to war. They are entirely different things.” *
"I have Saints, Martyrs, Prophets, all manner of Holy Persons in my family line. I was supposed to follow in their footsteps. But I didn’t. Not totally.” *
If you would like to see more of my writing (or some of the incomplete scenes these are pulled from) check out my tag on my account #Jericho Writes
If you are a Legends of Avantris and Edge of Midnight fan, By Any Other Name is a published oneshot about the Chapter 17 memory ritual you can find on my Ao3!

#everyone has the a different thing that is easy for them or they love doing that you will find very inexplicable #let them help you with that thing because it is easy for them and hard or expensive for you
the commodification of friendship is the most annoying thing to come out of the internet in ages. like actually i love to break this to you but you're supposed to help your friends move even if it's hard work. or stay up with them when they're sad even if you're gonna lose sleep. you're supposed to listen to their fears and sorrows even if it means your own mind takes on a little bit of that weight. that's how you know that you care. they will drive you to the airport and then you will make them soup when they're sick. you're supposed to make small sacrifices for them and they are supposed to do that for you. and there's actually gonna be rough patches for both of you where the balance will be uneven and you will still be friends and it will not be unhealthy and they will not be abusive. life is not meant to be an endless prioritization of our own comfort if it was we would literally never get anywhere ever. jesus.

honestly tempted to add more name layers but like four is so much as is. maybe more names as a class thing? hm. leftovers from having family names and shit mebbe. but not everyone had family names but like the world time period is really generally anachronistic and i can do whatever i want forever. how does class play into name dynamics anyway.
additional name concepts:
family names. pro of this: you can help distinguish who you're talking about, esp in regards to children who don't have a job outside of being a child. con of this: you can help distinguish family members and in a culture where name secrecy is a huge deal maybe not the move
title names, like noble or prince or whatever. pro of this: the flex. the drama of it all. the con of this: god i hate rich people. don't they get enough shit. is being rich a profession. ugh.
false names. what if you just lied, actually. pro of this: extremely funny. con of this: well now that doesn't feel very intimate now does it. but considering the bit i might just do it anyway tbh.
all this name shenaniganry reminds me of issoria's underdark (world w/@seerdeer) but maybe a different flavor of annoying. instead of taking a minute and a half to get through your entire introduction you just get to fight for your fucking life to know someone at all. "how do i fucking call you for dinner" is at least a shared issue...?

Honestly, I am pretty frustrated by the "haha why would anyone hate ace people" responses to Rowling's tweet.
Don't get me wrong, the support is nice. But if you want to be an ally, you have to do so on our terms, not yours. And that means actually engaging with the aspec community, not just posting positivity every now and again. And what those responses highlight to me is what I've known for a while; you guys only support aspec people when it's easy and convenient.
It's easy to support aspec people when it's J.K. Rowling being awful again. It's easy to support us when it's just reblogging an "aspec people are queer" post.
But what about when we are talking about amatonormativity and the relationship hierarchy? When we are discussing the enforcement of compulsory sexuality? When we are pushing for greater awareness and support for aspec identities that are not asexuality or aromanticism? When we are criticizing terminology that you use but harms us? Because I can tell you right now, I rarely see allo people engage with those posts.
Why do people hate asexuality (or any other aspec identity)? Because it challenges the societal norms that benefit them. And that is uncomfortable and scary. So they turn to hate and oppression in order to assure that the changes we push by just openly existing never happen.
That means that to be a good aspec ally, you can't just make a positivity post every now and again, and you can't just laugh about how stupid aphobes are. You have to openly challenge the societal norms that harm us, even if they benefit you. Including but not limited to:
The idea that romantic and sexual attraction is the default state of being (amatonormativity)
The idea that a romantic, sexual relationship completes a person
People in marriages receiving special privileges and benefits
The idea that platonic, familial, etc. attraction are default states of being
The idea that not feeling some form of attraction must be compensated for through another form of attraction
The idea that love (not just romantic) is inherently morally good, while not feeling love is inherently a moral failing
The idea that any one form of relationship is inherently more important or deeper than any other (relationship hierarchy)
The idea that any one thing makes someone human
The idea that not having sex is shameful or infantile
The idea that having sex without romantic love is callous
Gendered divides of sexual and romantic attraction
Other aspec people please feel free to add on/challenge any of this. Allo (not aspec) people please feel free to ask questions.

@teyrnacousland I thought you might find these tags (via @dreamywritingdragon) to be an interesting perspective re: your discussion about which of the Dellamorte brothers cousins is the older one 👀
five children and eight grandchildren. "did lucanis have siblings" did illario? has illario already felt the pain of losing a sibling, maybe even a brother, where lucanis hasn't? did feeling that loss at such an early age somehow make it easier to betray lucanis, because it's nothing he hasn't gone through (and survived) before? or did it make it harder, and then at his cousin's wake he's hit with the realization that he is truly alone now in the world, the last surviving dellamorte child?

Tumblr media
5 PM
Steve decided to take advantage of having the house to himself. His parents are gone for the week, as they so often are. So, he sent out a few invitations to some of his closest friends. A small get-together, he told them, nothing fancy.
Robin accepted, of course. And Nancy and Jonathan, too. Steve only told Dustin about the party, but he already knew that word would spread to all the other kids.
But Steve has a mini panic attack when he finds out you're coming. He isn't too sure where he stands with you these days. Your friendship has all but rekindled, but Steve is still wary around you, terrified of messing up again. You accepted the invitation, though. That's a good thing. Right?
As Steve waits for people to arrive, he takes out his only activities, a deck of cards and a single board game he received as a gift but never opened. He's relying on his friends with siblings and/or a healthier relationship with their parents to bring more things to do.
He sets out the snacks he bought. Chips and candy are laid out over the island counter in the kitchen, and soda is stacked in the fridge. Steve even sets aside a little stash of what he hopes are still your favourites. He also managed to get his hands on some beer, and there's money set aside for pizza later.
Soon enough, people start showing up. Robin arrives first, followed by Dustin, Lucas and Max. Then Nancy and Jonathan arrive with Mike, Will and El. Then you. And finally, Eddie.
The gaggle of children quickly bee-line for the snacks and games. Steve watches with disdain, knowing there'll be a mess to clean up after. But at least his other guests appear happy to see their gracious host, with you among them.
Steve pretty much shortcircuits when you arrive. You're dressed nicely, and your hair is all pretty. You lean in to give him a quick hug, greeting him fondly. He may as well have cancelled the night then because he's sure his heart stopped for a second.
He only snaps out of it when Eddie arrives, slapping him so hard on the back that it could've been an alternative to the Heimlich maneuver. Suddenly, the population of the house has gone from one to a dozen, and noise and energy immediately replace the prior peace.
Steve quickly realises that he's in for a long night.
6 PM
"So, what's the story between the two of you?" Eddie asks.
Steve blinks, caught off guard by the question. He turns to the other boy, who awaits his answer with a half-curious, half-smug expression.
"Nothing, man," Steve mutters, taking a sip of his beer.
"Nothing, huh?" Eddie smirks. "Is that why you're staring at her like she's the love of your life?"
Steve glares at Eddie, wondering who even invited him. Eddie is the newest addition to the larger friend group. Dustin is very fond of him. And from what Steve has heard, so are you. He's in a few of the same classes as you, and there's a rumour among the kids that you used to be in Hellfire for a semester in your sophomore year.
The thought of you being close to Eddie bothers Steve. He chases the feeling away with another sip.
"Come on, big boy," Eddie nudges him. "We're friends now. You can tell me."
He looks back at you. You're sat around the coffee table with the kids in the middle of a round of Uno. And you look so lovely. You always do. Even the way you're holding the cards is pretty. You're the perfect culmination of everything sweet. No wonder the kids are hogging you.
He looks back at Eddie, who's still regarding Steve with inquisitive and mischievous eyes. Steve considers acquiescing, especially since Eddie is willing to listen. At the very least, it'll give Robin a break from dealing with his usual sulking.
"We were really close in middle school," Steve begins. "Best friends, even. But then I started high school, and... well, you can probably guess the rest."
"Ah," Eddie nods, understanding immediately. "I see."
Steve continues. "We only spent a year apart. And she was so excited to join me. But then-"
"Then King Steve emerged, and you left her in the dirt," Eddie remarks.
Steve cringes at the wording but doesn't refute it. It's an accurate recount of what happened. He knew he was horrible, not just to you but to everyone. He regrets nothing more than abandoning you and letting his so-called friends pick on you. Meanwhile, he stood by, telling himself worthless excuses to justify how things turned out.
You and Steve remained strangers after he left his throne behind. And it probably would've stayed that way if he didn't become coworkers with one Robin Buckley, who had become your new best friend in his absence.
He remembers the days you would visit Scoops Ahoy, mostly to distract Robin and make his job harder. You would often give him quick glances and polite smiles, never going out of your way to talk to him. However, he would occasionally catch your eyes lingering on him.
Robin would tell him you were checking him out, insisting she knew how her best friend thinks. But he was convinced you were judging him for his dumb hat and sailor outfit. Nothing ever made him wish he could crawl into a hole and die more than that.
But suddenly, he was back in your orbit again. And he's never left since.
Turning his attention back to you, Steve watches you play your last card, earning a groan from a few of the other players. You stand up victorious, stepping away from the table to grab another drink from the kitchen.
Steve recognises this as the perfect time to approach you and say something other than the "hey" he offered when you arrived. But just as he's about to muster up the courage, the doorbell rings, indicating the arrival of pizza.
With a sigh and another slap on the back from Eddie, he turns away to retrieve the food.
7 PM
You fit in well with the others. Not that it's a bad thing. It's great, actually. It just reminds Steve how much time has passed and how things have changed. It makes him think of what could've been.
You being best friends with Robin makes more sense than hot chocolate on a rainy day. You're like two peas in a pod. You match each other's energy, and both have a sort of charming madness about you.
The kids obviously like you. Not that their criteria are that high. But it helps that you used to work at the arcade and would give them your spare quarters. Plus, the rumour that you used to be in Hellfire makes you seem like a legend in their eyes.
Even Max likes you. He could tell because you were the one she approached earlier, asking if she could have a beer. You laughed and told her no. She just pouted and accepted it. Steve knew if he told her no, he would've been left with an insult.
You aren't particularly close to Nancy or Jonathan. Still, Steve knew they respected you, which means a lot, especially from someone like Nancy. And, of course, Eddie is... Eddie.
Steve comes to the realisation that he's jealous of everyone at the party. They all have a place in your life, in your heart. He wonders if there's even room left for him. There was a time when he occupied all that space. And it's his own fault that changed. Still, he can't help but hope.
The pizza disperses and disappears quickly. As the others chase their dinner with more snacks and set up another game, Steve remains leaning against the wall. He's so deep in thought that he doesn't notice someone approaching him.
"Steve?"
He flinches at the voice. It's you.
"H-hey," he stutters.
"Hey," you reply. "You okay? You seem a bit... distraught."
Steve takes a second to respond but nods. "Yeah, yeah. I'm good, just thinking."
You tilt your head, sensing more to the story but not wanting to pry. "Alright. Just don't hurt yourself."
Steve chuckles nervously, both relieved and terrified that you're making jokes with him.
You point back towards the coffee table. "The others are about to start a game of Monopoly. Did you want to join?"
He looks towards the group, at Dustin micromanaging how Will sets up the board. At Max and El scheming their game plan, having already picked the token they want to use. And at Mike dragging over his reluctant-looking sister, an amused-looking boyfriend following behind.
Steve knew he ought to join in, having just been standing around all night. But the idea of playing a game about capitalism with a group of kids who took board games way too seriously doesn't appeal to him right now.
So, he shakes his head. "No thanks. You go ahead."
You glance at the others before turning back. "Nah, I'm good. I need a break from getting lectured by Dustin."
Steve snorts. "Yeah, that kid's got a mouth on him. You wouldn't believe how often he tries to give me dating advice."
"He gives you dating advice?" you ask, amused.
"Yeah," Steve answers. "Now that he has a girlfriend, he thinks he's unstoppable. A girlfriend he wouldn't even have if it weren't for me, by the way. I taught him everything he knows."
You laugh and shrug. "Well, maybe you could learn something, Steve. You know, the whole 'student becomes the master' thing?"
Steve lets out a huff. "No, no way. Besides, I don't need a girlfriend when I've got-"
You, he almost says. But he clears his throat and corrects himself.
"Uh, all of you," he states, vaguely gesturing to the party. "My friends, you know?"
His words make you grin. "Aww, Steve-"
"Yeah, yeah, I know," he mumbles. "Just don't tell anyone I said that."
He averts his gaze. His cheeks flush a bit, but he's holding back a smile. He's glad to have gotten that reaction from you.
You're about to tease him some more when Robin's voice interrupts, calling for your help from upstairs.
You sigh, looking back at Steve. "Duty calls. I'll leave you to your thinking."
You give him a cheeky smile before you leave, a smile that makes it seem like you somehow read his mind and found his thoughts amusing. He can only watch as you walk away again.
8 PM
Steve isn't sure how he got here, sitting next to you on the carpet. The Monopoly game was cut short after Lucas and Mike got into a heated argument. And now they've switched to The Game of Life, which hopefully won't cause any fights.
Not only did Steve get roped into playing, he got teamed up with you. You had been calling most of the shots during the game, but when you reached the marriage space, stuck a little pink peg next to the blue one and murmured, "That's us," to Steve... well, it all got a bit confronting for the poor boy.
He felt like a fool, sitting there overthinking two words that likely were said as a joke. Steve had realised a while ago that he loved you. A part of him thinks he always has, ever since the early days of middle school.
But being friends with you again after everything is more than he felt he deserved, so he doesn't expect you to return those feelings just yet. But then you go ahead and say something like that. So casually, too. "That's us." Married. Yeah, right. Either you're cruel, or there's hope for him yet.
Steve manages to calm his emotions a few moments later. But as the game progresses, he continues comparing his life to the little blue peg that was supposedly him.
Steve, in the game, has a college degree, a decently-paying job, a pretty pink peg for a wife (which you've claimed to be you), three peg children and his own house, all while avoiding any mid-life crises.
Steve, in real life, at the ripe age of nineteen, has no idea what he's doing. He's been through at least two quarter-life crises. College is definitely not happening. And he's working a retail job Robin got for him through bribery. At least it came with a better uniform. One which would probably help with picking up girls if the girl he actually wanted wasn't the one currently sitting next to him.
At least now, when you visit Robin at work, you also come to see him. You make eye contact, give him bright smiles, and actually talk to him. And he has to do everything in his god-given power to not lose his mind each time.
But it's not all for nothing. After all, you're a loyal customer of Family Video, and Steve always looks after his patrons (as long as it's you). If he knows you'll be visiting, he'll put on one of your favourite movies on the TV in the store.
He'll also research movies he thinks you'll like, lie and say they're unavailable if someone tries to rent them before he can get them to you. It earns judgment from Robin, but he doesn't care. As long as it makes you happy.
Soon, Steve vows, he'll take you out to see a movie on the big screen. It'll be just the two of you at the back of the theatre with a big bucket of popcorn. He'll pull some cheesy move on you. You'll laugh at him or roll your eyes. Or maybe you'll fall for it. Either way, it'll be perfect.
Steve only checks back into the present when The Game of Life ends. He glances around the table, relieved no one has noticed him daydreaming. Everyone's cars are in the retired space, and Steve catches a glimpse of you and him and your three kids again. But he looks back at the real you as you turn to face him.
Steve is no help as you sort out how much money you ended up with, too busy admiring you instead. You're focused, doing maths in your head and using his lap as a surface to lay out the notes and cards. And somehow, he falls even more in love with you in this moment.
9 PM
The party has diminished, with Nancy and Jonathan having gone home with the kids. Now, just Steve, Robin, Eddie, and you remain. Outside, dark clouds have gathered, showering Hawkins in light rain.
The four of you are finishing the night off with one last card game. You had won, of course. And now Eddie has recruited your help. He has his arm around you, his head pressed against yours, his deck hiding your faces as you conspired his next move.
If Steve didn't know any better, he'd assume you two were a thing. But he does know better. Eddie must be doing this on purpose, trying to make him jealous or something. And it was working. Steve supposed that's what he deserves for trusting Eddie with his deepest, darkest regret.
The card game turns into a one-sided glaring contest, with Robin having to nudge Steve whenever it's his turn. With your help, Eddie finishes second. Robin comes third, and Steve loses the game. But at this point, he isn't even upset about it because it means his suffering is over.
Eddie finally lets go of you, letting out a contented sigh as he stretches his arms above his head.
"Alright," he announces. "I'm calling it a night. You ready to go, Buckley?"
Robin nods. "Yeah, let's head."
The two stand and begin gathering their things.
Eddie looks at you as he puts on his jacket. "You sure you don't want a ride home?"
You shake your head. "I'm good, Eds. You take Robin. My dad should be here soon."
Eddie accepts your answer with a nod, and you catch the slightest hint of a smirk. But you ignore it as you and Steve walk him and Robin to the door. You give them each a hug before they leave.
Robin has an expression you don't fully comprehend as she hugs you back, somewhere between smug and amused. "See you later, nerd. Make good choices, okay?"
You furrow your brow, but she heads out the door before you can ask what she means by that.
As Eddie steps out after her, he looks back at Steve. "Hey, Harrington. Don't do anything I wouldn't do."
He sends Steve a wink, who frowns at the implication of his words. You notice Robin is still giving you that look. You send her a raised eyebrow in return. But no more words are exchanged as the two go their merry way.
"God, they're weird," Steve mutters as he closes the door.
His comment elicits a chuckle from you, which elicits a flutter in his chest. He turns to face you, unable to help the smile that graces his features just by looking at you. But a mildly awkward silence follows as Steve racks his brain on how to proceed now that it's just the two of you.
"You, uh- you want another drink?" he asks.
You smile and nod. "Yeah, sure."
His own smile widens. "Alright. You sit back down, and I'll get us some."
Steve heads into the now almost empty kitchen, grabbing two bottles before finding you again in the living room. You're sitting on the couch, packing up the deck of cards. Steve is momentarily distracted by the way your hands move.
But as he approaches and hands you your drink, he decides to be bold and sits close to you, throwing an arm over the back of the couch. He doesn't even have a millisecond to regret it because he feels you lean into his touch.
Steve revels in the satisfaction.
10 PM
Eddie and Robin seem to have left just in time because the storm picks up only a few minutes after they leave. You and Steve sit and chat for a while as you finish your drinks, and you help Steve clear up the empty cans and scattered wrappers despite him ordering you not to.
But even after everything is cleaned, your father still hasn't arrived. Steve watches as you wait, looking at the time again.
"You're welcome to stay over if that's easier for you," he tells you.
You look over at him, considering his offer. "You don't mind?"
Steve shakes his head. "No, of course not."
He doesn't mind. He doesn't mind at all. In fact, he would prefer it. He's used to being alone for days at a time. But it's a bit harrowing going from twelve people to just one, especially in a big empty house during a storm. Yes, he definitely wants you to stay.
"Okay," you say, "I'll just call my parents and ask what's happening."
Steve nods as you walk over to the phone and call home. It rings for a bit before someone picks up.
"Hello?" your mother's voice greets you.
"Hey, mom," you reply. "It's me."
The pitch of her voice changes immediately upon hearing your voice. "Hi, darling! Is everything okay?"
"Yeah, I just wanted to check if dad was still coming to pick me up?" you ask.
There's a pause before your mom groans. "Oh, I'm so sorry. We completely forgot. We had a lot of wine for dinner. I can go get him now."
"It's no big deal, mom," you interject. "The storm's getting pretty bad anyway. Steve said I could stay over."
Again, your mother's cadence changes, but you don't need to question why. You know she's always been a fan of Steve.
"Okay, darling," she responds. "That sounds like a good idea. You two take care, alright?"
You resist rolling your eyes, even though she's not around to see it. "Yeah, you too, mom. Bye."
Your mom bids you farewell, and you hang up the phone.
Steve, who waits patiently nearby, takes this as his cue to speak up. "You staying?"
You look over at him and nod. "I'm staying."
"Okay, great," Steve smiles. "You can take my room. I'll go in the guest bedroom."
"What? Steve, no," you say. "You don't have to do that. I'll take the guest bedroom."
"No, really," he insists. "It's cold and uncomfortable in there. Trust me."
"I'm the guest, Steve. I'll go in the guest bedroom," you respond.
"No, not happening," he states.
You frown. "I'm not letting you give up your room."
Steve crosses his arms. "Well, I'm not letting you stay in the guest bedroom."
There's a pause in the conversation as the two of you stare each other down, hoping the other will fold.
When neither of you do, you make another suggestion. "Alright. How about we just share your bed?"
Steve raises his eyebrows. "Uh, you- really? Are you sure?"
You shrug. "Yeah, I mean... we used to do it all the time as kids, right?"
It's true. You did. There were countless nights when you would pass out in bed together, having stayed up watching movies or spent the entire day in the pool.
"Okay," Steve agrees. "Let's do that then."
"Great," you say.
"Great," he replies.
Yeah... great.
11 PM
Don't freak out. Don't freak out. Don't freak out.
That's all Steve could repeat in his head. He's lying on his back, staring up at the ceiling while you're beside him. He forgot to factor in how the both of you have grown considerably since middle school, meaning there's less space between you now.
Don't freak out. Don't freak out. Don't fr-
"You know," you break the silence. "I forgot how weird your plaid wallpaper was."
Steve furrows his brow, his distress momentarily forgotten as he turns to look at you.
"It's not weird," he says defensively.
"It's pretty weird," you reply before looking at him. "But it's cool."
As your gaze meets his, he feels his nervousness rushing back. You look so soft and cozy in his bed, wearing his shirt. And you're smiling at him as if you knew the funniest joke in the world and you were about to tell it to him.
He lets a beat of silence pass before clearing his throat. "Did you have fun today?"
"Yeah, I did," you answer genuinely. "You?"
"Yeah," Steve replies. "It's nice having people around."
You nod in response, remembering how his parents would send him over to live with your family whenever they would go away. As much as he loved being able to spend time with you, you knew he hated being left behind.
"How long are your parents gone for this time?" you ask.
"Just until the end of the week," he tells you.
You nod again. "You've been faring up by yourself?"
He shrugs. "I don't mind it. They've been on my back a lot recently. Honestly, I needed the break."
"Right," you reply. "So not much has changed."
Steve lets out a humourless laugh. "Nope. It's been hell since I graduated last year."
You frown at his words. "I guess that's not surprising."
"Yeah, I don't know," he pauses for a second before continuing, his voice quieter. "Sometimes, I think they have a point."
You pause as well, trying to gauge what he's thinking. "You shouldn't let them get to you, Steve."
He sighs. "I know. But what if they're right, you know, about me?"
"They're not. I promise you," you reassure him.
Steve turns to look at you again, almost like he's searching for your sincerity.
You give him a smile. "You'll be alright, Steve. I know it."
Steve can't help but smile back. You sound so earnest that he's inclined to believe you. Besides, you're here with him right now. So, he must be doing something right.
You fall into a comfortable silence. There's barely any noise this late at night to disrupt it. After a few moments, you let out a yawn.
"Ugh, man. I'm so sleepy," you mumble.
"You should get some rest," he responds. "I still remember how grumpy you get in the morning."
You give him a deadpan look. "Gee, thanks."
Steve chuckles. "Just telling the truth."
Your feigned expression breaks as you laugh along, too. Steve cherishes every second of the moment before it fades away.
You yawn again. "Alright then. Goodnight, Steve."
"Goodnight, sweetheart," he replies.
The room falls silent again. Steve lets out a deep breath and closes his eyes. Despite the uncertainty, a smile still lingers on his lips. A million things could change tomorrow. But for now, at least, you're still by his side.

Headcanon: Flirting (And Jealousy)
Tumblr media
Pairings: Dean Winchester x Reader, Beau Arlen x Reader, Soldier Boy/Ben x Reader, Russell Shaw x Reader
AN: This one was requested by one of my lovely Patreon members, @lacilou. And surprise! For the first time, I'm trying out adding Russell Shaw to the lineup because I thought he'd be an interesting addition for this prompt. 💜
Prompt: How would Dean, Ben & Beau react to either other men flirting with us or them obliviously/cluelessly letting other women flirt with them? And how we would react to them -- like how they'd make it up to us, their excuses, etc.
HC: How Dean Winchester, Beau Arlen, Soldier Boy (Ben), and Russell Shaw would react to someone flirting with you. (And others flirting with them.)
Tags/Warnings: Established relationship, oblivious flirting, unwanted advances, jealousy, some toxic masculinity (you know Ben 🙄), but ultimately lots of fluff, and some spice too.~
Tumblr media
Dean Winchester
Tumblr media
Dean isn't one to get jealous...at first.
He knows you're hot as hell. He pretty much expects guys to try and shoot their shot.
Plus, he's secure enough in his relationship with you to know you wouldn't consciously entertain someone who's flirting with you.
He also knows you're strong enough to take care of yourself, even with a persistent asshole.
However.
The second a man gets into your face or tries to put his hands on you, Dean's stepping in -- either to twist the man's arm nearly out of its socket, or deliver a swift punch between the eyes, or his personal favorite, grabbing the back of the guy's neck and slamming his face onto the counter.
Dean finds the sound of bone breaking against varnished wood, followed closely by the heavy tripping thud of a body to the floor, deeply satisfying.
You heave a sigh. Not because you're all that annoyed at Dean, but because you tried to warn the guy.
Now, Dean knows he used to be...well, a "ladies man," putting it mildly. He's improvised more panty-dropping one-liners than a Magic Mike stripper. His success rate is 9-and-10 (because there's always room for improvement).
He directs all that flirtatious, playful, sexual energy on you. He's fallen for you, committed to you, and once he makes a decision with his heart, Dean Winchester doesn't have an unfaithful bone in his body.
However.
He can't altogether stop women from flirting with him. Like at one of the many diners you, Sam, and Dean stop to eat at after a hunt.
"Let me know if you need anything else, okay?" the waitress says. She brushes her hand up his arm and squeezes his shoulder, giving Dean a too-bright smile that leaves nothing to the imagination (at least to you).
He smiles back at her. "Thanks, sweetheart."
It's like a reflex. He thinks he's being polite. He doesn't even follow the path of her hip-swaying walk with his eyes -- like he certainly would've before he met you.
You still stare at Dean incredulously. When the woman walks away, he smiles at you as if nothing happened. Sam wisely keeps to himself and sips his beer, hiding a smirk.
Dean notices the way your lips are pursed, bitchface activated. "What?" he asks.
You cross your arms. "Really?"
He frowns. "What's the matter?"
"Really. You need me to tell you not to let that woman eye-fucking you to put her hands all over you?" You shake your head. More dryly you add, "Right in front of me, too. I gotta give it to her, she's got brass balls."
Dean is bewildered, but then he replays the moment in his head and realizes that you're right. He kinda fucked up.
He sees the way you're getting all testy, and he has to chuckle.
"Okay. I'm sorry, sweetheart. My bad."
He reaches for your hand and manages to uncross your arms. You're stubborn in your irritation, but Dean is the king of persuasion, giving you teasing, flirty bedroom eyes and waggling brows as he pulls you towards him.
If you're still reluctant to soften, he adds, "Come on, don't be a sourpuss. Come 'ere."
Eventually he breaks you, making you laugh and hit his arm with no real force behind it.
Even Sam shakes his head, seeing how his brother manages to pacify you by sliding his arm around your shoulders across the booth. Dean leans in and kisses along your neck. He inhales your scent and hums in pleasure.
Sam clears his throat. He has to awkwardly look away.
"Gonna forgive me?" Dean asks, his lips moving against your skin. "Though I gotta admit, I kinda like it when you're jealous. All growly and fiesty. Got myself a little tiger."
You roll your eyes, but your lips tug at a smile. Your face warms in a blush, especially as his hand wanders under your jacket and teasingly up your side.
You slip your fingers into his hair, making sure to give a sharp little tug on it for good measure. He just laughs.
Oh, you'll forgive him, but maybe you'll make him do a little more penance when you all get back home.
Tumblr media
Beau Arlen
Tumblr media
Beau is a jealous man from the onset when a man flirts with you.
His lips purse, his jaw clicks, and he keeps a firm eye on the situation. He doesn't like it.
But to his credit, he tries not to act on it right away, letting you handle it the way you want to.
However, like Dean, the moment someone gets into your personal space or tries to touch you, he's pulling out some Sheriff moves.
If the man grabs at you, Beau's got his arm twisted behind his back so fast, he can almost feel ligaments popping. Beau gives a calm, but firm warning before sending the guy on his way. (He'd like to do more, but the department frowns on excessive violence.)
Maybe part of you gets annoyed at the show of jealousy, but a larger part of you can't help but be turned on when he protects you. You know it's not because he thinks you need protecting, but because he wants to.
"Can't help it, darlin'," he's said. "It's just how I was raised."
But you're the one that bristles when Danielle, a PTA mom at Emily's school, flirts with him. She laughs at his corny jokes with her white teeth and her perfectly layered and coiffed blonde hair.
She even gives him an extra cookie from her offering at the school's bake sale. (She knows what most of this town knows -- that the way to the Sheriff's heart is all too often through his stomach.)
Beau just nods along, smiling polite with that charming grin of his, totally oblivious while he eats. The last straw for you is when she wipes a bit of chocolate from the corner of his mouth.
Your mouth falls open in shock. "Are you shitting me?"
You accidentally say it out loud, earning not only your boyfriend's surprised look, but Danielle's guilty one as well. (And some of the kids.)
Blushing in embarrassment, you pivot on your heel and start packing up your supplies for the bake sale.
That's when Beau realizes that he fucked up.
He politely excuses himself from Danielle and goes to help you (wiping the crumbs off his face and licking chocolate off his thumb). He can tell you're feeling more than a little icy towards him, but he tries to make up for it by doing all the heavy lifting, bringing back things to the car, and helping you with the bags before he calls Emily over.
It's a long car ride home, awkward and tense. Emily can tell something's off between you and her dad, but when she asks about it, you claim nothing's wrong.
Beau knows better.
He waits until the three of you get home to the apartment you share with him, and after putting the bake sale stuff away, he follows you into the bedroom.
"Sweetheart--"
"What the hell was that, Beau?" You come in hot with it, and Beau is quick to try and ease your tension with an apology.
"I know. I'm sorry."
"Couldn't you see that she was eyeing you like a honey-glazed ham?"
Beau's lips twitch at a grin, but you're not amused. You cross your arms and give him a warning look. That's when he wises up.
"Okay, you're right. I'm sorry." He chances taking a few slow steps towards you, raising his brows and keeping his hands up in surrender.
You eye him narrowly, but you let him get close enough to slip his arms around you. He gathers you against his chest and presses a lingering kiss to your cheek.
"I mean it. Won't happen again," he promises. His hands mold to the curve of your waist and squeeze gently. His lips move, burning a sweet path along your jawline, your chin, over the apple of your cheeks, and finally your lips. You breathe into it, and you can't help but cling to the front of his buttoned-down shirt.
"Do me a favor," you say quietly between kisses. "Don't eat Danielle's cookies."
Beau smiles against your lips. "Don't you worry, darlin'. From now on, I'll tell her that I've got some good cookie at home."
Tumblr media
Soldier Boy (Ben)
Tumblr media
Oh, Ben doesn't fuck around.
...Well, in the sense that he can't tolerate another man even looking at you flirtatiously, or otherwise with any kind of intent.
Depending on the severity, at best, it'll have Ben shooting the man a stony look of warning.
At worst, it ruins the day -- namely with the sound of bone snapping and a man's sobbing howl of pain.
You try to get him to tone it down ("For God's sake, Ben. It's fine. Just relax."), but this is one thing he well and truly doesn't budge on.
Ben is possessive. Because you're his. His to touch, and his to protect.
In his mind, it's fucking simple.
Whenever you get irritated with this brutish, knuckle-dragging, caveman mentality, you try to remember why he does it.
It's indicative of how much he actually cares about you.
Because if he didn't, he wouldn't really give a shit if other men were flirting with you. (He'd just find another woman to try and charm back to his apartment.)
So you've learned how to try and finesse these situations so that Ben doesn't notice.
You've also stopped letting down men easy, proverbially cutting off their dick and balls with your words.
Because it's quite literally to save their dumbass life.
But when other women flirt with Ben, he takes it all with indulgent smiles, throwing in a wink and a sweetheart every now and then.
He doesn't blame them for flirting with him, checking him out. He's Soldier Boy, after all, and in his mind, it's not his fault they can't help themselves around him.
However, a smile and a wink is all that he allows himself.
If he truly cares about you (and though he doesn't often express it in words, he does), then the unfamiliar twinge of guilt stops him whenever he almost accepts a woman's alluring invitation--spoken or unspoken.
His mouth might spew arrogance and gilded lies, but his actions too often betray what he really feels.
And what he really feels can't be any more clear than when he goes after you, instead of indulging the woman who basically undressed him with her eyes, whispered sultry, sexy offerings in his ear, and invited him to go home with her.
Seeing you take off out the double doors of the club, Ben rolls his eyes. He brushes the woman off without a backwards glance, and follows you out into the night air. He grabs your hand before you can get far in your heels.
"What the hell's the matter now?" he asks dryly.
You turn on him with an incredulous look.
"That woman was practically sucking your neck, Ben!"
"All right, don't fucking overreact. You're getting hysterical," he says, before guiding you back into his arms.
"I'm not fucking hysterical, you ass!" You push against his chest, but he doesn't budge, nor does he let you go. This isn't a good area, and he doesn't want you out in these streets at this time of night without him at your side.
"Ben," you say sharply. You look up at him in irritation, but he just smirks and strokes your side with his thumb.
Yes, (in his mind) you're being a little difficult, but he thinks your jealousy is amusing, adorable, and kind of hot all at the same time.
Ben doesn't bother with saying anything more to convince you. He just slips a hand behind your neck and kisses you soundly.
He invades your mouth with his tongue and devours you, reminding you that you're the one he wants.
He waylays you with his strong hands framing your body against his, and with his sinful mouth, until you finally melt into his embrace.
He's chosen you countless time before, and he knows he'll keep choosing you, for as long as this lasts.
Tumblr media
Russell Shaw
Tumblr media
Russell always clocks the "situation" right away when a man starts to flirt with you.
He's not one to make a scene of it at first, depending on the time and place.
But he is quick to sidle up to your side, pointedly slip a hand along your waist, and greet you with a deceptive smile.
"Hey, sweetheart. Let's grab that table over there. 'S more comfortable than the bar."
He glances up at the man, sharpness hidden well behind his green eyes. Whether the guy picks up on it or not, Russell is making a mugshot in his mind -- and he never forgets a face.
You eye him knowingly, but you let him guide you away. He's kind of cute when he's jealous, and it doesn't take much to spark that well of protectiveness that lies in wait just under his skin.
Russell isn't easily fazed by most things, but one sure way to provoke his temper (and those rougher, darker shades of him that he tries his best not to show you) is for a man to push his luck with you.
It really wouldn't take much effort at all for the former soldier to have a man clutching his bloody, shattered nose, let alone to dump his broken body in front of the closest hospital. But somehow, Russell manages to curb those darker urges. (Again, don't tempt him.)
But when another woman flirts with him, you're the one who starts to have steam coming out of your ears.
Russell doesn't miss much. He recognizes the sultry inflection in the woman's words. He catches the subtle, sensuous gleam in her eyes when she rakes him up and down with them.
He also notes the moment you look over and realize what's happening.
Regardless if you're looking or not, he tries his best to stay distant, but polite, even as a warning twinge of "aww shit" runs up his spine.
He tries to play things off with an amiable smile and being purposefully oblivious.
Until the woman gets bold, slipping her hand over Russell's and up his arm a bit, before she withdraws, tilting her head with a sweet-as-pie smile.
Cue Russ's awkward laugh/clearing of the throat. Before he has time to fully pull away and just come out with the, Sorry, I actually have a girlfriend -- you return to his side and pointedly grab his hand.
"Come on, honey, we'll be late," you say, giving him a tense smile.
The aww shit feeling is back, but Russell just nods and falls into step with you.
When you two have enough privacy to hash it out, you let him have it.
"What the hell was that?!"
Russell can't help but chuckle. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I tried to keep it classy, but that woman was persistent. Not that I blame her--"
"Oh, shut up." You roll your eyes (not that you really blame her either). Then you stare at your man in annoyance, crossing your arms. "I didn't see you trying all that hard to fend her off, huh, Romeo? If another man had touched me like that, you would've broken his fingers off, like a fucking caveman."
Russell's brows raise at the dig, but the way you're getting all testy is kind of cute (and also kinda hot).
"All right. You got me there," he says. He slips his arms around your waist and tries to soften you with a charming grin. "Come on, sweetheart. You know I'm not going anywhere."
"Do I?" you blurt out, before you have a chance to reign it back in.
Russell's contract jobs take him all over the country -- all over the world. Yes, he's on his way out, he claims. He wants to settle down with you, or so he says.
But you have no idea of knowing what he does when he's not with you.
All those days out on the road, crashing in skeevy motels, winding down at dive bars -- has he ever been tempted to "sample" the local fare? Has he ever...
Russell's amusement fades, sobering into a frown and a furrowing of his brows. He hums in disapproval. He doesn't like what he's seeing in your eyes: doubt, most of all.
"Hey," he says. It's a serious tone you don't often hear in his voice. He curls a finger under your chin and tilts your face up to meet his.
"I'm gonna need you to listen to me, and listen good," he says. You frown at that, but he brushes his thumb across your cheek, a small, but tender caress. "You and me, we've got something good. I know what that means. So you can believe me when I say, I'm in this. I'm right here, even when I'm not here."
And he smiles at you. "That make sense?"
Slowly, you start to smile too. "Not really," you laugh.
But it does. You know what he's trying to say, and...you believe him. Your fingers curl in the front of his shirt.
Tentatively, you lean up and press your lips to his; just a sweet, slow meeting.
Russell cups your cheek and leans in for a deeper taste, a deeper conviction of every word he just said.
I love you, is what it really means, even if he's not able to say that just yet.

The wild rover needs to take off his binder - (Trans!Ryan, 5x18 tag) by ADHDdumbass
Summary:
Ryan finally comes home after the events of 5x18. In the show it seemed like Ryan was only gone for, like, two days, but in my fic I wrote it more like a week. He has been wearing his binder for too long & Esposito gets concerned, but they have been up all night since Ryan called Esposito on Liam's phone that night on the docks, so they are just going to take a little rest. Fluff.
Notes:
Inspired by Finally Back by orphan_account.
I saw this other fic & decided "holy crap that could be so good if I rewrote it for these characters. Credit goes to the original author, but the fic is orphaned so... I can't exactly credit them. Still, u can check out the fic!
(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Dan/Danny/Dani additions 1/5
Danny is adoption bait to the Gotham rogues.
Danny only went to Gotham university because it had a lot of ambient ectoplasm and he could fast track to the arrow space department in Wayne enterprises if he worked hard enough. He didn’t need adopting, he was already 19 years old and had a (strained, very distant) relationship with his parents. When he moved to Gotham, he expected to have to deal with people wanting to make him a new Wayne, not with all of the Gotham rogues immediately trying to adopt him.
So what if he defended Killer Croc from some asshole cops, accidentally exposing his fangs and had a conversation about being dehumanized with him that led to them having dinner on Wednesdays?
So what if he got into a serious conversation about the green gas effect and pollution (Sam had taught him well) with Poison Ivy that result in him coming over for dinner and Harley Quinn declaring him a ‘sweetheart’?
So what if he directed Frostbitw to help Mr. Freeze and now Nora invited him over for brunch on Sundays?
So what if he had a wonderful conversation with the Riddler in which they traded space themed riddles which lead to Riddler seeking him out sometimes for a game?
So what if he helped Mr. cobble pot by making him intangible when some people were driving by in about splash mud on him and he now had a part time job there as a bouncer?
So what if Grundy played tag with him every other Thursday and called him Little Death and offered to eat his chemical engineering teacher who gave him a low grade because he didn’t follow safety precautions?
This didn’t mean he was adoption bait. Shut up Sam.
