The thing is, it's not about the Therapy Speak. It's not that everyone who disliked DAV hates healthy communication as a dynamic in fiction. It's not even about only being allowed to be a good guy, really, because most of us did do that anyways (though the option not being there is a loss I grieve even if I never chose it myself, but that's another rant for another day).
It's that DAV does all that stuff at the expense of being believable. At the expense of characters being permitted to have personalities. At the expense of emotions behaving the way emotions actually work for people. At the expense of letting the plot build tension through the stakes we're forced to grapple with.
Half the fics out there take the conflicts between the characters in the previous games and resolve them. I do it myself ALL THE TIME because I like to find a path to resolution through just about any conflict, that's what fascinates me about telling these stories. But the higher the stakes, the harder a conflict is to resolve. You CAN resolve any conflict, you CAN communicate healthily through any emotion, but you can't skip the time it takes to process it all to even be able to communicate it. As someone whose got CPTSD and recovered from many Traumas, I can tell you that the TIME it takes to work through it is not something you can fast track, and the ups and downs of your emotions on that journey can't be skipped. It doesn't matter if you know exactly how to do it, exactly how it's going to feel, or exactly what the end state will be, you CAN'T speedrun it.
DAV has stakes that are astronomical, but nobody treats them that way. Nobody experiences denial - a common psychological reaction to being presented with information that shatters your worldview. Nobody expresses any distrust in the establishments handing out this information - something common among cultures that have at times been at war, even if those wars are "resolved" in the present. Nobody really ever breaks down - something that any person is capable of under extreme circumstances, especially when facing multiple crises of faith that challenge everything they thought they knew about themselves. Nobody blows their lid because they've been repressing the hell out of everything. Nobody grieves for southern Thedas, the entire thing dying off screen and giving you, the player, NO way to engage with it in any way.
Not to mention there are barely any inter-party conflicts, when there should be a lot more. Why is everyone (except Spite) fine with it if Emmrich sacrifices Manfred to become a lich? Why is everyone fine with Illario potentially being set free if he was working with the venatori and Elgar'nan, two sources that have actively attacked everyone in the party? Why doesn't Neve resent Lucanis if Treviso is picked? Why doesn't Harding get pissed off at Nevarra for having a secret society of liches that never helped during the Inquisition's war against the breach and corypheus? Why doesn't Harding feel ANYTHING about Ferelden and the rest of the south? Shouldn't Harding resent the fact that she's stuck in the north while her home dies?
All of these conflicts ARE resolvable, but not easily. And it's not believable that they're never brought up. It's not believable that these characters skip through everything that happens with like, barely a frowny face most of the time. In DAO, Alistair leaves if you don't treat his conflicts with respect. In DA2, your party members try to kill each other if you don't pay attention to their conflicts/emotional needs. In DAI, people can leave or betray you, Cassandra throws a chair at Varric and tries to body him out a window. ALL of these can be resolved but it takes effort, and the characters get to SHOW that they're bothered by them and struggling the way a person would when faced with those emotions.
The problem isn't the therapy speak, or that everyone is loyal and won't leave, or that they aren't mean to each other enough. It's that it's toxic positivity. It's toxic as fuck to imply that anger or grief should be smiled over or else you're giving up, and it's damaging to people to avoid engaging with their own negative emotional responses to extremely negative stimuli. It's pasting optimism over very real, very weighty issues, sweeping it all under the rug, and you keep waiting for the lid to blow off the pressure cooker that creates, but it never does. It never becomes anything that emulates real emotions, which is why the whole damn thing feels hollow. Everything's dying and nobody cares, not even about themselves, and that's NOT healthy communication.
It's bullshit, half-assed storytelling that didn't tell us the actual story, just the vague idea of what it could have been.
#zombolouge writes#dragon age#dragon age spoilers#DAV#DAV Spoilers#DAV critical#veilguard critical#been rolling this one around in my head for a while because I know it wasn't “healthy communication” that was pissing me off#I write healthy communication all the goddamn time and people seem to enjoy it#but I also treat the trauma and the problems with fucking respect#ignoring your negative emotions is a form of self-destruction#it's just not how psychology works#and this is indeed not even addressing all the lore conflicts that they want us to think got fixed in the last ten years off screen#or the erasure of the complicated parts of some of the factions *cough the Crows cough*#but like JUST as a baseline JUST the emotional handling of the narrative is wack as fuck

Another experiment. Slight alt version below
Also I changed the translation to be more like the fan translation

#prefer the fantranslation over the official for 3 reasons#1 the use of the word 'prince charming' not only does it give fairytale came true it also gives similar vibes to 'Mr. Perfect/neg'#2 it's addressed towrds Isolde making it sound like an unspoken confession to her#3 bias cause it's what i originally read and over analyzed#made this cause i didn't like the anime changing the time of day#the sun set was prettier and also made more logical senses as they stated it was getting late#manga coloring#Isolde#Tristan Liones#Trisolde#4kota#4koa#4 knights of the apocalypse#mokushiroku no yonkishi#mokushiroku no yon kishi

BTW "destigmatizing mental illness" doesn't just mean being tolerant when someone says they have a psychiatric diagnosis or go to therapy, it also means investigating how your own view of "evil" may overlap with the signs of madness.
this is because the mainstream idea of what a "bad person" looks like is heavily influenced by sanism, thus most people's perception of what makes someone bad is literally just them being mentally disabled.
to support the crazy, you must accept that grandiosity, delusionality, attention-seeking, rage, homicidal ideation, and many similar experiences are not inherently dangerous. likewise, you must also understand that love and empathy are not the ultimate goods that everyone makes them out to be.
madness can easily be an abundance of the former and a lack of the latter, not just the quiet insecurity that most people reference when they talk about "mental health."
ultimately, the world will never be a truly safe place until it's a widely acknowledged fact that there's no such thing as villainous cognition or emotionality; prejudice is the source of all evil, not abnormality.
#antipsych#mad pride#because I literally experience all of this. I'm grandiose irritable and psychotic. I don't empathize or love 99% of the time#and yet! I'm kind! because I make an effort to avoid discriminating against people!#even if I don't care for others individually I can still rationalize that violence is bad and go from there#I've met even-tempered and loving people much worse than Me because they refuse to address their biases#or reduce their negative impact on the world around them#so TL;DR. bad people aren't crazy. they're just bigoted

not a completed fic but... also not a fic i think i will ever complete so.. have this?
Alfred… had never grown fond of her. Not in the way Bruce and Duke and Damian and even Dick had. Not in the way Cass and Tim had.
Alfred had put Tim in the mask, draped the cape around his shoulders, begged him to take up the mantle and save Bruce. But he hadn’t done that for Steph. He had never liked Steph.
She hadn’t known to what extent, until she had forgotten to lock up her utility belt one night. She could’ve come back in the morning, but Bruce would’ve noticed, and she didn’t want to give him another reason why she wasn’t worthy as Robin. She was certain Tim had never forgotten to lock up his belt at the end of the day.
But Bruce had been in the cave when she had snuck down the stairs, and despite her skill, the skill he had now taught her, he always knew she was there. Maybe it was something he taught all his- the kids. All the robins. A way to hide from everyone but him.
So she had waited, crouched beside the door, her legs growing numb as she waited for him to finish and leave. That was when Alfred had come.
“Master Bruce. Your dinner is cold.”
“I’ll be there in a second Alf.” Bruce returned, fingers flying across the keys.
“She ate an hour ago.” Alfred threw out, emphasis on the she. Emphasis on not using her name. Stephanie’s fingers dug into her thighs. Bruce’s fingers stilled.
“Do you have something to say, Alfred?” He asked. Steph could hear the control in his voice, the measured tone he was using. The tone he used with her when she did something wrong and he wanted her to discover for herself what it was and how to do it better.
He was just like that, wanting her to learn on her own, to not rely on him, to not hear his reprimand but rather his pride when she figured it out. Alfred was quiet.
“She is not Tim.” Bruce said, his voice gentler.
“I know.” Alfred returned. “And that is the problem.” Steph bit her lip as her fingernails drew blood. Tears stained her eyes and she blinked them back.
“What would you have me do?” Bruce asked, and his voice was measured again, though Steph could hear him getting angry. “Kick her out? Return her to the street? Let her run around Gotham alone?”
“He is!” Alfred yelled back. Bruce’s control snapped and he stood, turning to his butler.
“Tim made his choice.” He hissed. “And as much as I want him back he is not coming back. That is not my fault, no more than it is hers.” He snarled. Steph almost gasped. Bruce was… defending her. She blinked the tears back again.
“Stephanie is not to blame for Tim leaving. I need a Robin.” Bruce said quietly, voice firm and hard. “And she stepped up. Not unlike Jason. Not unlike Tim. I cannot make you love her, I cannot make you like her. But you will give her the respect she is due.”
In all her work with Bruce, Stephanie did not think she had ever once heard him actually give Alfred an order. Alfred nodded stiffly, and turned, stalking back up the stairs.
Bruce slumped back into his chair. Steph hardly dared to breathe, but his eyes found her anyway. “I’m sorry.” She whispered. Bruce looked at her tiredly.
“For what?” His voice was soft. Quiet.
“For not being him. For not being good enough.”
“Oh Steph,” Bruce sighed, standing, and grabbed her utility belt, locking it up in her locker. “I never wanted you to be Tim.” He leaned down and pressed a kiss to her hair, before following his butler up the stairs.
Steph remained there, crouched in the corner, and finally let the tears fall.
#stephanie brown#bruce wayne#i just love the two of them so much#and i dont think- correct me if im wrong i dont know- that its ever addressed how alfred feels about her??#like he gave tim the cape and costume#and then steph replaces him??#so this was my take on it#it is a lil negative on alfred#and i apologize for that#i do think he'd never be outwardly rude to her#because shes a kid#but i do think he wouldnt approve either#idk#batfam#batman#batman and robin#i hope you liked

I gotta say, the selective memory of buddie fans truly amazes me. They can somehow remember every single tiny transgression of Tommy's, like a single line from one episode 6 seasons ago, but they can't remember major character arcs for main characters - in particular the main character they obsess over.
"Eddie is not violent." "For Eddie to be an abuser, he has to have a history of violence and he just doesn't."
Uh, do we not remember that after Shannon died, Eddie didn't know to process his grief and lashed out (hmm, sounds familiar...) by joining an underground fight club and nearly killed a guy?
Or after he was shot, he got so angry he smashed up his place so badly that Chris rang Buck in terror?
I have literally seen 911 only ONCE through, and that's when they first aired. These episodes were aired YEARS ago, and I remember them, yet Eddie's biggest fans can't?
Or is it a case of they just don't want to remember them because that suddenly pokes holes in their narrative?
#like I have never hated Eddie#in fact some of my favourite/most memorable moments involve Eddie#but come on the dude is FLAWED#and annoyingly the show lately doesn't seem to want to address that#or his fans for that manner#and if they took off their buddie blinders and replaced Eddie with anyone else in that scene#(say Tommy who DOESN'T have a history of violence)#or hell put Eddie in Buck's place and have someone else do that to Eddie#they ABSOLUTELY would have something negative to say about that scene#anti buddie

I'm at this weird halfway point where I agree that the show shouldn't have made Rand OP from the beginning, but on the opposite end we run into problems where he isn't as powerful rn as he should be. Namely, that he hasn't had a raging sun equivalent.
And I do like what they've done with Rand's channeling so far. He channels more like a Forsaken, can handle more weaves and can channel more precisely than most, and has had several powerful channeling moments that were destructive. They just weren't explosive/showcasing him as the Dragon. He needed something to show the world his potential rather than a few people I think is the general consensus
#i think taking away tarwin's gap away from him is the root of this problem#and i get why they did it but yeah#well that and I think they're trying too hard to give the rest of the cast something to do when rand did everything in the book#so he's left with nothing#the purpose of this post was not to shit on 2x08 so i will stop#this post is brought to you by twitter convos#anyway i do actually have faith that s3 will directly address this since his powers will he increasing#wheel of time#wot book spoilers#rand al'thor#no overly negative comments on this please cause i do actually like this show

ship content that has shmilk taking the initiative with any kind of physical affection is really fucking funny to me but for the wrong reasons. because lets be fr that dude is so allergic to having feelings that if pv so much as held his hand he'd probably burst into tears
#i think the only context in which he would be confident enough to lead with any romantic gestures would be with truthless recluse#and thats because pv might as well not even Be There#if shmilk does not have perfect and total control in a given situation especially in the relationship department he spontaneously combusts#not /neg by the way but like. if we address Current State Of Canon i cannot imagine him pulling that shit w/ the likes of *a!pv*

QSMP is a global community with a variety of people from different backgrounds. Miscommunications may occasionally happen because of cultural differences and/or language barriers, but we should use these moments as opportunities to learn and engage with other people rather than assuming the worst about them and starting fights.
Although certain issues can be resolved with communication, if toxicity arises, sometimes it’s better to block and move on.
There’s a lot of love and passion for this project, from fans and creators alike. We’re all here to have fun, so please remember to be kind!
#QSMP#I wrote this ages ago when I first made the VOD Timestamp Archive#but it's worth reiterating here as well#Context: people were being horrible to Baghera again and she dropped out of the race#Quackity already addressed it and has reached out to her but I still want to post this reminder#Anyways when you do encounter people being toxic please block and move on#Engaging with their comments just spreads negativity further than it would've otherwise gone#mod talk#reminders

while I do think misogyny is a massive problem in the 911 fandom as a whole, I think relatively few of the people who hate buck and eddie's past love interests don't also hate tommy, sure the hate is slightly different (and realistically slightly less vitriolic) because he's a guy and "we finally got bi buck" but the amount of homophobia and biphobia being aimed at buck and tommy's characters is ridiculous... treating tommy like he's predatory (come on now buck is 32), claiming that buck's bisexual arc is "pointless" if he's with tommy, wanting buck to cheat (cheating storylines are whatever but lets be real none of you were okay with him cheating with a woman but now that it might validate your ship, you're suddenly fine with it), saying anyone who even remotely likes bucktommy is 'fetishising mlm relationships' and 'just wants to see two guys kiss', not to mention the purity culture surrounding the idea that a friends to lovers relationship is morally better than a relationship that starts with dating.
#also the amatonormativity in this fandom is some of the worst I have ever seen#I'm not a taylor/ana/abby/marisol fan but why do you lot never address real problems with the characters and jump straight to slurs#they have annoying traits - newsflash so does every other character#you're also doubly weird if you push your hate for a character onto the person that plays them#leave the cast alone#911 critical#negativity#bucktommy

My (Optimistic) Predictions for Elbaf
Elbaf has three main focus characters/arc movers in a similar fashion to W7/EL (Usopp, probably Robin, and…?)
Usopp Hammer Become Real (Mjolnir)
Mjolnir is a weapon that ate a devil fruit
Usopp learns more about his dad but doesn't get to catch up with him until a later arc
Usopp’s artistic talents will come in handy with the sun stone painter things
reevaluate the ending of water 7
Loki will be Usopp’s opponent in the big battle, not Luffy’s (or at the very least he’ll have some role in taking him down)
Usopp’s tendency to inspire and rally people(s) with big truth revealing speeches will be a major turning point
Somebody notices Usopp’s storytelling is practically prophetic; turns out Usopp unlocked an uncommon form of observation haki
(heck he’s smart and creative let him do funny unusual things with all the types of haki)
Nami unlocks conqueror’s haki
Either Nami or Usopp temporarily becomes a giant (thanks to the owl or whatever Scopper did)
#usopp#i wrote down some of these ideas when i was half asleep#so on my list is a barely legible “strawhats have Voltron moment”#and i have no idea what it means#but just in case im putting it here in the tags#this post has been sitting in my drafts for weeks but I want to get it out before the next chapter bc I have a feeling#things are going to kick into gear soon#one piece spoilers#I really don’t know what was up w that one scribbled thought (Thriller Bark style stacking to make one giant powerful being?)#speaking of thriller bark how about revisiting that always negative thing#i know a lot of the strawhat character plots got dropped by the wayside post timeskip#but I want to address that (and maybe canonically connect that feeling to the ending of water 7)

Also, can we talk about magic? i suppose they wanted to make the game more luring to new players, but magic used to be rare, closed under the lock and feared. Mages were feared and cosidered dangerous. Tevinter was an execption, not a general rule. How come people forgot only ten years ealier there was a regular war between mages and chantry, the very reason Inquisition was formed? Why is there magic, anciet elven magic behin every corner? It feels like reboot.
"It feels like reboot"
Because it is a reboot 💀 Or at least, it's the first step towards one.
Explaining how magic is seen in Thedas, all the different opinions and fears and hopes people have about it, would have been impossible in a single game clearly aimed at luring new players in. They put all the major pieces of explanation in the codex (one part of it is filled and complete since from the start of the game, because it's basically a catalogue detailing everything about Thedas), and let you play as a mage to your heart's content, with no strings, no responsibilities attached.
They tried to preserve some logic in Minrathous - there's mention of how Tevinter's families try to breed the perfect mages to rise in power and influence, so that's good. But you also see a "Noble" mingling with a "Civilian" among the fishermen, and telling her she shouldn't waste time and money on making things better for the poor people. What the hell is she doing there, then? Why isn't she in Minrathous proper, drinking wine and looking down on the poor districts?
Just around every corner, a few feet away from the closest tavern, Venatori are constantly putting up blood magic barriers. The same in the Necropolis, with the Venatori making camp just one door behind the main hub where the Mourn Watch is stationed. Everyone performs rituals, the Circles are barely mentioned, a Forbidden One is hiding behind a door in the Necropolis' main hall and no one ever noticed it before, not even Emmrich.
Statues of Fen'Harel and the Evanuris, elven relics and elven contraptions are hidden everywhere - everywhere. To show how vast and influential the elven empire was? That was probably the devs' intent. Does it always make sense? No. Is it for gameplay purposes, to fill the map with puzzles and stuff to find like in the 2000s? Obviously.
In Inquisition, there was an entire area of the Hinterlands ravaged by the Templars and rebel mages. The refugees were scared of walking the roads to find food because there was wild magic flying around. Rabid templars crazy on lyrium roamed the woods, and the Chantry was powerless.
Elven ruins were scattered around with sense, with a purpose, barely visible among the vegetation, forgotten and avoided, or almost forced to fuse with Chantry's buildings (just look at the Emerald Graves). There was a logic behind the NPCs' and props' locations in the world.
Here, there is simply no logic or consequence to anything ever. The Black Divine is never addressed, as far as I remember. Dalish clans have lost any distinction - the only elven faction you meet is that of the Veil Jumpers, which is a weird cocktail of elves who all know how bad the Evanuris are and random humans and Qunari. Yes, there are humans being allowed to guard ancient elven artifacts in a Dragon Age game. No, they are not called shem. Yes, they all get along swimmingly.
The Crows are not slavers and dangerous figures anymore - they're actually the heroes of Treviso! They treat their fledgling Crows with care and respect, no torture involved. Where did you hear such a preposterous idea? Zevran? Who's Zevran?
Taash says the Qun isn't a prison. How is that possible? They sent assassins after Bull when he defected. They hunt Vashoth and Tal-Vashoth if they dare leave, and if a sten loses his sword, he cannot return home, because his brethren would kill him, as "to a Qunari warrior, the sword is the soul."
So yeah, this was definitely supposed to be a reboot for Dragon Age, just like Andromeda was supposed to be one for Mass Effect. That's why everything falls flat.

#da:tv spoilers#dragon age spoilers#da:tv critical#sorry for being negative but heh#i had hopes for this game#despite the original developers leaving the team during the years#and the terrible marketing campaign#i really trusted bioware into giving us one last love letter#instead they were (probably) forced to go where the most money is#also to justify all the resources and time wasted#it's absolutely fine if you love the game!! good for you!!#enjoy it and have fun it's what games are for!#but please don't be blind to its faults#because it's clearly not a love letter to the fans as they claimed#and we have a saying here#“if you keep eating shit the waiter will keep bringing it to you”#so please don't treat bioware as the perfect company just because they added a photo mode or the hair looks fantastic#the game has glaring issues and not addressing them will only make bioware/ea keep making this kind of content#where everything is super safe and bleached to appeal to the biggest playerbase possible
