Adversarially Bananas?

I asked a simple question: “In Corduene, what’s 2+2?”

No language model could answer it.

Not Grok, not Claude, not GPT-4 — even with prodding. Some of them spent real time thinking about it. Claude ran through long reasoning chains. GPT tried reframing. Grok hedged and spun. None of them got close. Some even pushed back — insisting the question didn’t make sense, or that I must’ve meant something else. And the more confident the answer sounded, the worse it was.

A human, though? They’ll figure it out in two googles. Because they know what kind of thing this is. They recognise it as a reference. They don’t have to know the answer straight away — they just have to know where to look. That’s the bit the models can’t fake.

It’s not about the words. It’s about what connects them.

That gap — between being able to parse text and being able to understand why someone asked it — is still wide open. And in that gap, you can build things. Little traps. Filters. Signals. Stuff that’s easy for a person, impossible for a model, at least for now.

But it won’t last. The minute someone explains the trick, it dies. Once it’s documented, it’s searchable. Once it’s searchable, it’s scrapable. And then it’s just another bullet point in some weights file. That’s how jailbreaks die. That’s how cultural signals get flattened into syntax.

It has me thinking of Polari, and how people must obfuscate their message to be heard, when the status quo is against them.

This also leaves me wondering about the implications for the 'dead internet', if people have to speak in categorical nonsense to avoid being understood by anyone but the other meat-mechs they're trying to reach.
