Ancient Language Write-in Skill from Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy. This Skill is optional, and if given to your investigator, must be set at a minimum rating of +1.
Ancient Language (Knowledge) || Ancient Language is a measure of a character’s knowledge of at least one ancient language, such as Latin, Ancient Greek, etc. The player may pick any number of ancient languages for this Skill to represent, up to the Narrator’s discretion. (It’s hard enough to learn a living language, let alone a dead one. It might start to break immersion if your hard-boiled detective from the bad side of town happens to be proficient in Ancient and Medieval Latin, Ancient Greek, and Sanskrit.) Use this skill when a character needs to read, write, or, God-forbid, speak an ancient language. This Skill may also be used to identify the age and culture of a text, to determine whether a text is authentic or a forgery, or for anything else related to ancient languages.
Unlike the regular Language skill listed below, it takes a Skill roll to even read, write, or speak basic information, because these languages are not perfectly understood even by expert historians. Additionally, if an investigator needs to use any other Skill that would require understanding an ancient language (especially Paperwork or any Interpersonal Skill), this would first prompt an Ancient Language roll (which is also an Investigative Roll if the initial Skill roll is). This may add penalties to the second roll, as listed below:
Full Success: No penalty.
Partial Success: -1 penalty added to the other skill roll.
Failure: -2 penalty added to the other skill roll.

I've had my ups and downs with Latin but right now I kinda love it.¹
Anyone out there who's interested in learning latin or who already knows latin and would want to talk about it or be as curious to try to actively use it?

C.M. Lyons' Story
"I first read The Inheritance Cycle when I was in seventh grade, and it was the first time I was introduced to the concept of conlangs and linguistics beyond what was already there. I flew through the books and poured over every little word and it's meaning, and would even try to learn to speak the Ancient Language myself, though that didn't really go as planned. That fascination with the words that he had created has now snowballed into my true passion for language and linguistics, and I am now going on to university to study linguistics to get my PhD and eventually become a professor. (I have also made two conlangs of my own and my own fictional worlds but I haven't done anything with them yet.)"

OMG ITS FROM THE CLASH OF THE FAMILIES!!
The 'Game of the ayllus and amaru' which translates to 'family' and 'bitter' in Quechua!!
I've never seen this before, this is actually fascinating sfbsdfds.
500-year-old Snake Figure from Peru (Incan Empire), c. 1450-1532 CE: this fiber craft snake was made from cotton and camelid hair, and it has a total length of 86.4cm (about 34in)
Tumblr media
This piece was crafted by shaping a cotton core into the basic form of a snake and then wrapping it in structural cords. Colorful threads were then used to create the surface pattern, producing a zig-zag design that covers most of the snake's body. Some of its facial features were also decorated with embroidery.
Tumblr media
A double-braided rope is attached to the distal end of the snake's body, near the tip of its tail, and another rope is attached along the ventral side, where it forms a small loop just behind the snake's lower jaw. Similar features have been found in other serpentine figures from the same region/time period, suggesting that these objects may have been designed for a common purpose.
Tumblr media
Very little is known about the original function and significance of these artifacts; they may have been created as decorative elements, costume elements, ceremonial props, toys, gifts, grave goods, or simply as pieces of artwork.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art argues that this figure might have been used as a prop during a particular Andean tradition:
In a ritual combat known as ayllar, snakes made of wool were used as projectiles. This effigy snake may have been worn around the neck—a powerful personal adornment of the paramount Inca and his allies—until it was needed as a weapon. The wearer would then grab the cord, swing the snake, and hurl it in the direction of the opponent. The heavy head would propel the figure forward. The simultaneous release of many would produce a scenario of “flying snakes” thrown at enemies.
The same custom is described in an account from a Spanish chronicler named Cristóbal de Albornoz, who referred to the tradition as "the game of the ayllus and the Amaru" ("El juego de los ayllus y el Amaru").
The image below depicts a very similar artifact from the same region/time period.

Imagine discovering an #ancient #alphabet by sheer chance—a script that belonged to a long-lost civilization.
This is precisely what happened recently, shedding light on a forgotten culture that once thrived in what is now modern-day #Turkey.
The 20-centimeter (7.8-inch) #tablet was recently unearthed during an archaeological dig near the #Spanish town of #Guareña. Known as Casas del Turuñuelo, the site belongs to the late #Tartessian civilization that developed in the southwestern #Iberian Peninsula around 2,500 years ago.
When the Spanish National Research Council revealed the discovery on June 6, they simply explained that it depicted battling individuals who were identified as warriors.
The news caught the attention of Joan Ferrer i Jané, a computer scientist and expert in #Paleohispanic #languages at the University of Barcelona, who quickly realized the artifact was even more significant than the initial reports had suggested.
The newly found inscriptions promise to unlock secrets of the past, offering insights into the language, culture, and daily life of a people lost to history.
This remarkable find not only enriches our understanding of ancient civilizations but also sparks curiosity and excitement about the mysteries that still lie beneath the earth.

One of my favourite bits of linguistic trivia is that in Ancient Greek, the word ἰχώρ (cognate to the modern English "ichor") is attested in extant literature to mean both "the bodily fluid which gods possess instead of blood", and also "gravy", which implies several things about Ancient Greek culinary culture's attitude toward gravy.

the language nerd in me is fucking screaming and crying about the fact that Cassandra Pentaghast has what i believe may be the most accurate impression of the extinct gothic germanic accent we have, and the fact that they didn't even try to give anyone else from Nevarra the same accent is fucking criminal
yes i know it is an entirely made up accent that miranda developed herself, she unintentionally hit the nail on the fucking head with the accent of a dead language that would even be lore accurate with the placement of Nevarra relative to orlais and the other neighboring countries
also im sorry using Gothic as the language inspiration for nevarran??? is that not like too fucking perfect??
like yeh i get it accent training people for a fake accent is ridiculously hard
i do not care
give me gothic nevarrans in the truest sense of the word
i might post the notes find the notes here i have on the actual linguistic comparisons if anyone cares because i studied her pronunciation to compare to historical texts when i made the connection
