The Inspiration of Gaius van Baelsar 😌
After the Lahabrea and Gaius short story came out I wanted to draw something moody for them. Inspired by Caravaggio's The Inspiration of Saint Matthew.

Iceflection by Steve Pellatt Via Flickr: Lochan na h-Achlaise, Glencoe Seems like ages since I posted an image, what with work, Norovirus and my trip up to Glencoe. I’ve tried to catch up with some postings over the last few weeks but inevitably I won’t get through them all so apologies for that. I haven’t finished with Iceland yet (or numerous other past shoots) so am likely to return to those but I will post some from my recent trip to Glencoe. Having been there in March the last couple of years I’d decided to try January in the hope of getting more ice/snow. Well it worked for the first 36hrs, after which it rained solid for a whole day and washed it all away. This shot was taken after about 9.5hrs of driving with the odd break. I got to Lochan na h-Achlaise on the A82 barely an hour before sunset and decided if I was going to get anything on my ‘first day’ this would be the most likely location. After a bit of my normal messing around I came across this scene. Now I will admit this is a composite image/focal length blend. The sky and reflection in the ice puddle comes from one image and the rest from one taken seconds later when I widened the focal length to capture more of the ‘ring’ around the ice. In those 30? Seconds the light/reflection was gone. Now I could have just posted the first image I know and maybe I should have. However, I just thought having the wider focal length on the ice worked better. I know this won’t be popular with the purists but as I’ve declared it I don’t feel guilty! Glencoe is wonderful part of the UK/Scotland and something about it keeps drawing me back. Maybe it;’s because it seems quite small overall but as a Tog you can keep finding new things to shoot or, even it it’s the same shot, it can vary so much over the seasons/years. I never get tired of it. © All rights reserved to Steve Pellatt. Please do not use this image on websites, blogs or any other media without my explicit written permission.

Planet Crafter Review
Feels like an Alpha or Early Beta Game
tl;dr - This game has a really cool concept, but falls pretty far short of what it could be. It looks and feels like an game in alpha - the broad gameplay concepts are implemented and working, but everything is very rough around the edges, and in need of a lot of work. I'm a little dissapointed it still looks / plays like this, despite no longer being an early-access game.
What are the good parts?
Despite the awkwardness of the base-building mechanics, there is a satisfying progression of your base. It slowly transforms from a basic survival shelter, to ad-hoc terraforming station, to lab dedicated to agriculture and research. Despite disliking quite a lot about this game, it was quite charming to see this growth in my base. Unfortunately, it's the only saving grace in my eyes.
What are the not-so-great parts?
Look & Feel - The presentation of this game is pretty rough. Terrain is bumpy and uneven, with repeating textures. Larger pieces of terrain like cliffs are visibly duplicated and rotated shapes, and from what I can tell, water level rise is constant across the map - very much like a garry's mod map.
In addition to this, buildings, machines and resources all look very basic - for lack of a better word. They feel like they've come off an asset store, which is fine, but don't give a lot of charm and don't feel well implemented if they are. Machines placed outside have varying accuracies of bounding boxes - with some happily being placed inside one another, whilst others have huge blank areas they cannot intersect within. Furthermore, the basic habitation building and foundation don't share the same footprint, so tile differently & items placed inside habitats have some grid-snapping, but it doesn't visibly line up with centreline - giving everything about your base a slightly skewed appearance. Lastly, resources are all just scattered across the map rather haphazardly. There is some sense to it - with rarer or later game materials farther out from your start point, or in caves - where they receive slightly more care in placement.
Character handling - Much like the machines, buildings and resources the character handler feels very basic and a bit like it's come from some asset store. No legs, and pretty vague hand waving to give you a sense of movement. Walking and jumping feel basic - it's easy to slide around on rocks. Yet despite this roughness in movement and sparsity, there's a fully implemented emote system - which feels like priorities have been a bit mixed up...
Survival - The survival element of this game is pretty lack lustre. Dying carries little penalty beyond inconvenience of having to go back for the things that you don't respawn with. Some survival meters you expect - namely O2, water and food / health (a bit ambiguous in distinction) are there. Heat is absent, despite that being a key part of your work in the early terraforming stages.
What are the bad parts?
The Terraforming - It really pains me to say this, since it is such a cool concept that I've not seen done elsewhere, but nowhere in my (admittedly limited) 9.5hrs of gameplay did I ever feel like I was really having an impact on the planet. Sure number went up, and changes started to happen but it just felt meh...
Early stages like heaters and machines meant to release 'gas' to build up temperature and pressure, fail to sell that drama. They just sit there limply spinning or glowing orange. There aren't billowing clouds of gas - and the scale of your work feels at odds with your goal. This is partially mitigated by giving the player "advanced" technology, and I understand the wish to avoid turning the game into something the likes of Satisfactory or Factorio.
Further on, water rise seems to just be a fixed feature of the map - a global level, rather than dynamically filling pools. Textures slowly fade from one to another, gradually changing the look.
Lastly, the weather sucks. There is occasionally storms or rain - but these are little more than some noise and a filter applied over your view. This game is very gentle on the survival element, you don't take damage from rocks that might be blown about in a violent storm in early game, nor are you frozen or boiled alive from your changes - since your character is unaffected by temperature (despite it being something you actively change, like atmospheric O2 content, which affects your consumption of O2)
The rover - The rover is very very shoddy in its implementation. When steering, wheels snap to one direction or another. There is no suspension, so your rigid box of a rover, rattles over the low-poly, uneven terrain. Its one saving grace is having near infinite traction as long as 3 wheels have some kind of ground contact. Combined with no real engine/torque system, you can drive up near vertical cliffs which is both handy, and immersion ruining.
All in all, this game has a promising set of mechanics, that feel rough around the edges and could be amazing given some time and work. Given this game is seemingly no longer in early access, and the devs have moved on to making DLC - the kinds of improvements I would hope to see are not likely imo. I can see why people would like this game, given it's unique selling point and gentle survival, but why it's "overwhelmingly positive" in reviews on steam is beyond me.

While I cannot speak for the childcare thing I work 9.5hrs on a standard day and could not agree more. the last 2hrs of that day I am not productive because my brain is mush and the first hour I am not productive because I'm still half asleep.
6 hour workday maximum i’m not kidding, if it can’t be done in that timeframe it doesn’t need doing.

Tired

Tired. Asked myself why I am even journaling but I want to write. It might help me decompress. Worked 9.5hr days this week it’s Wednesday night tonight. I feel exhausted. I kind of hate instagram right now. I need to detox from it. I have a headache. I hate being too tired for poetry. Maybe I work really hard on weekends rather than during the week. I don’t know. Got lost in thought about work. What a waste of energy. I just wanted to think about cute ideas and abstract thoughts. Maybe that’s why I’m interested in strategy. I saw something on LinkedIn about bringing your whole self to work. Maybe I bring another postcard to work. Order postcards from the Whitney. Good idea.

OC-TOBER 2022 :: Day 11 :: Love
Kissing with tusks isn’t the easiest thing, but Viiveh doesn’t mind one bit.
This was such a guilty pleasure to work on. I struggled a lot to make it look right, to make sure the size difference between them was right.
This took me 9.5hrs.

The best thing happened at work today. I wanna share, both to encourage people they can do it & to appreciate the person who did it.
So....for context we put our pronouns on our work nametag (he/they). Most people ignore it & misgender us anyway (ma’am, miss, she 😣).
This older, grey haired man (best guess is he was 40s to late 50s) noticed our pronouns. Normally people ignore it, but he didn’t.
So we had this conversation:
~
Older Gentleman: *pauses to stare at our nametag & pronouns*
Us, internally: Oh no. Please don’t say something bigoted or painfully ignorant.
Older Gentleman: “So I have teenage kids and I’m new to learning this pronoun stuff...so, ¿how does that work?” *points at our nametag* “¿What does the ‘they’ do?” (/polite, curious)
Both of us: *awkward pause*
Older Gentleman: “Sorry. You don’t have to explain and I absolutely don’t want to be disrespectful.” (/insistently genuine, gentle)
Us: *blank stare, shy smile* “It’s okay. I’d rather you ask and make the effort to be respectful.” (/srs)
Us: “Use them interchangeably. Use both, back and forth.” (/srs)
Older Gentleman: “Okay.”
Both of us: *quiet pause*
Older Gentleman: “So ¿did you use he/him before? ¿What were your original pronouns?” (/gentle & curious, fidgety like a curious little kid)
Us, after an uncomfortable pause (deciding to be honest but not say it explicitly): “I don’t use my original pronouns.” *shrug*
Older Gentleman, understanding that implies it was she/her & not asking further: “Okay.” *appreciative, apologetic smile*
Both of us: *awkward pause again*
Me, deciding I feel comfortable to explain: “I’m nonbinary - not entirely man or woman.” (/srs, tentative & hopeful)
Older Gentleman: *nods* “Okay. While I’m learning [and might forget to use they], ¿which binary pronoun is more comfortable?” (/genuine, srs, curious)
Us: *blink of surprise* “He/him.”
Older Gentleman: “¡Okay! I’ll use he.” (/genuine, srs)
~
He went on to order food very politely & patiently, & when he gestured the two people with him to order (“he’s ready, it’s your turn”; “tell him what you want”) he correctly gendered us. He didn’t demand why we changed our pronouns & didn’t say anything bigoted.
??? đŸ„ș💚
That's the most respectful & polite way to handle something like that. And it completely made our day (/srs, genuine). We’d been at work since 6am, up since 5am, & it was 2pm (we had a 9.5hr shift), & we were exhausted & in pain (& dysphoric from getting misgendered all day). But that respectful interaction that took him maybe 5 minutes had us smiling, more energetic, & with a little bounce in our step for the rest of our shift.
Honestly I’d rather be asked by everyone how to use our pronouns correctly & how to best respect us than deal with another person who sees our pronouns, decides not to ask, & uses she/her anyway. He even asked some borderline uncomfortable questions, & I still felt safer around him overall than most of our customers.
So please, if you feel confident enough for a second, ask. Your server, the customer service employee you talk to, the retail worker, that intimidating goth person who wears spikes, we are all people worthy of respect. If you’re unsure how to use a pronoun, ask. But don’t shame someone for not using pronouns you expect &/or are already familiar with.
On that note I’m gonna keep smiling like a little kid who found a dollar (/lighthearted, poking a little fun at myself). I adore that man & hope he becomes a regular or semi regular customer. đŸ„°
