Not Quite his Twin

Danny Fenton is not Danyal al Ghul. They’d wanted him to be, but he wasn’t.

He still remembers when he first woke up, his whole body feeling raw and ill-fitted. Even his mind felt wrong, his memories not quite his own.

Which, he supposes, they weren’t.

Because Danyal is still dead. Executed on the orders of the Demon’s Head for failing to live up to his twin.

But the spurned heir would make a perfect figurehead to build legitimacy for a coup, so a splinter sect of the League stole away some of his remains before they could be disposed of. They may not have had permission to access the Lazarus Pits, but they could still turn to some more unorthodox methods of attempting resurrection. A combination of cloning, a few stolen and processed samples of Lazarus Water, and pieces of necromantic rituals.

And it almost worked.

Almost.

The body they constructed did indeed come to life, and clearly possessed at least some of Danyal’s memories, but it wasn’t him. The memories were locked behind a barrier, present in abstract but not felt. This thing they created could never pass for the deceased heir, and thus could never be the figurehead they wanted. So they decided to dispose of him.

But the clone’s memories had shown him this sort of betrayal before, and he did still have some of the original’s skills. He struck first, killing several of their agents and managing to escape the lab.

He had no idea what to do next, but at least he was free. Free to form his own life, to become someone unique rather than just not-quite-Danyal.

We as society really underestimate the concept of Jason hallucinating Sheila of all people. Yes, of course, hallucinating himself, or Joker, or even Willis and Bruce is interesting, but what about Sheila? This woman single-handedly shattered Jason's last drops of belief in parents... Do we really think it doesn't hunt him, the last images of hers, in that warehouse?

From all moments they shared there, I also think it is not the image of Sheila trying to escape along with him in the last minutes, clinging into him helplessly - I think, it is a blurred image of a smocking woman that turned away from him, when he was beaten. A sight he caught on the corner of his eyes, through pain and shock.

So, maybe Jason catches her reflection in the window, when he tries to smoke in his apartment - he doesn't like to do it, the feeling of smoke suffocates him, but that act helps him to pretend once that he has some control over his life and trauma - and she turns away from him again, disappointed, shaking her golden curls. Or maybe once Red Hood gets taken as a hostage by the sheer chance, ambushed or anything vaguely similar to what he had already experienced, he phantomly hears the click of the lighter, and his mother's long, drawled sigh followed by the impatient tapping of her heels against the concrete floor.

Just maybe.

But it is not like anyone else would ever know, right?

It’s just crazy to me that Buck spent his twenties by himself, alone, wandering the entire western hemisphere from Montana to Peru and Maddie Han, who has been single maybe a year and a half of her adult life, wants Buck to “learn how to be alone.” If this show was more clever I think there would be a reckoning between the two of them over how Maddie seems to actively dislike that Buck may have found someone more important to him than her. Especially since it seems like she knows she holds the cards for him calling Tommy (and can feel them slipping with the way he said “I should call him” instead of “do you think I should call him”)

the real tragedy of s2 is going to be when garcia and collins get weirded out by an overly Nice and Proper langdon because they're used to him being like an asshole brother to them but between recovery/therapy + not wanting to fuck up his second chance he's not going to risk teasing the way he used to it

little detail I've picked up on: lucanis seems to like it when rook is smart. not in an academically minded way, necessarily, but when they're clever/analytical and clear-eyed about the practical realities of a matter and able to sort out the bullshit. most immediate example that comes to mind is of course when rook points out to illario that zara physically can't have made it back to vyrantium yet by conventional means in the café scene (where they're also backing what lucanis is trying to say, so the approval there makes extra sense), but it pops up in several other places too where rook cuts through to the heart of a problem with that kind of thinking. his and davrin's approval often overlap, but davrin seems to like it when rook is resolute and practical (and kind but don't tell anyone that sssh <3 ilu davrin), where I get the sense that lucanis gets that extra little thrill when they're also clever. in another contrast emmrich likes it when you're curious and openminded and kind (a lot like solas in da:i really) -- more like a life-long earnest academic *would* think about and value learning and knowledge in terms of a process and way of thinking rather than the results that come out of it -- while i think lucanis kind of likes it (and possibly gets a little ah frisson out of it depending on your relationship with him lol) when your mind is a knife. which I think is really neat. also tracks perfectly with him liking both viago and neve too haha. he clearly enjoys the Thinkers of the world.

I’m just so obsessed with how endearingly cringe Olethra MacLeod is, queen after my own heart. Like embarrassingly fangirling over her grandma’s friends, scrambling and running around the ship when it’s attacked, pushing a man into a flock of pigeons then hiding and humping the air for no one to see, and now trying (and failing) to seem cool so Monty puts her in his books. And throughout it all she retains her nicegirl friendlygirl swag that Max is the one who gets bullied by the crew the most
