just watched ES’s trailers, and I wanted a second opinion. Is there anything that immediately resembled Greek mythology to you in either of the videos, because to me I mostly saw biblical stuff like the multiwinged ES.

i guess it makes sense considering her design, but I feel like we got biblical allusions with SM and I’ve gotten so used to Greek-inspired ES that id be disappointed if she wasn’t, yknow?

Yes, actually! Let's pull out the title screen they revealed to show you what I mean

First thing is that little dude on the right haha. Pavlova Cookie greatly resembles Eros (most people know him by his Roman name, Cupid), son of Greek goddess Aphrodite and god of love and sexual desire. A talented archer, he would take aim at gods and men alike and shoot them down with his arrows, causing them to fall in love with who or whatever they're looking at (Aphrodite often had him do this to specific people she told him to, to suit her own goals/purposes. She's a horrifying combination of vindictive mean girl and wannabe matchmaker. Methinks Eternal Sugar employs Pavlova in a similar way)

I know the place gives "Garden of Eden" vibes, which is fair and true (but a little lame tbh). But I personally think it looks just as much like the Garden of the Hesperides, a fabled lush garden from Greek myth where trees bearing fruit that granted immortality grew (and were guarded by the Hesperides, daughters of the titan Atlas). The fruit in question are golden apples. What's that in that little snake's clutches over there, next to Eternal Sugar? A golden apple :)

It's more apparent in another picture (see attached, in the lower right corner), but: the architectural style of the place is very much Greek. The columns are ionic, which is a column design/style created by Ionian Greeks around the 6th century BC. Ionic columns are primarily characterized by the spiral scroll pattern at the top

Eternal Sugar's dress is actually quite Greek-looking. Obviously it's not 1:1, this is a cartoony video game not a historical documentary, but that style is very Greco-Roman. Look up traditional ancient Greek tunics/chitons and other attire, especially for women, and you'll see what I mean

She's actually not holding a harp. That is a lyre, a stringed instrument that's similar to a harp. The lyre is a common and beloved instrument in Ancient Greek culture and myth, most notably played by Apollo, god of the sun and music, and Hermes, god of travelers and thieves (and a lot of other things, he's a bit of a jack of all trades). The former also gifted a golden lyre to the famous Greek hero/protagonist Orpheus, who was a master musician and used that lyre to charm Hades and Persephone into agreeing to let him lead his deceased love Eurydice out of the Underworld (if you know that story, you know how it ends...)

Again, I understand that the place bears resemblance to Eden. Which it does. But aside from that, and aside from the nod to the Garden of the Hesperides, the whole thing reminds me of the island of the Lotus Eaters, a location stumbled upon by Odysseus and co. on their journey back home from the Trojan War during Homer's Odyssey. In that place are flowers that are exceptionally beautiful and even more delicious - but they're cursed. Eating them turns you into an addict almost immediately, and they rob you of your memories and will to do anything or leave the island at all. Odysseus lost a few of his men to them. I get the impression that the foods in the Sugar Paradise are like those lotuses, and Holly and co. run the risk of becoming Lotus Eaters too

To bring up the Odyssey again, Eternal Sugar herself gave me a lot of Circe + Calypso vibes in the trailer. Both are women who fell for Odysseus upon meeting him and trapped him on their islands for a time, using magic to control and manipulate him (Circe is a goddess of sorcery, Calypso is a magic-using nymph). Other people had to intervene on Odysseus's behalf to free him from their spells; otherwise, he would've stayed stuck forever. Sugar seems a bit like them; developing an attachment to Holly (both because she wants the Soul Jam back, and out of genuine sentiment. Remember that the Ancients and Beasts are canonically soulmates) and luring her into her strange, "happy" world and trying to trap her there forever

I'm a little disappointed with the nods to Christianity ngl. I love Christian/Abrahamic lore and symbolism very much, but I didn't want that for Sugar. We already had it for Shadow Milk. I wanted Sugar to be 100% Greek, but... no, I guess lol. Gotta have Eden and those little cherub looking guys and the snake with the apple. It gets boring after a while. Christianity is the most famous religion to ever exist in the history of the world, EVERYONE knows Christian iconography to some degree, why can't we have something different for once. Mystic Flour and Burning Spice were awesome in that they leaned into cultures that don't get a lot of recognition in the West (China and India), you know? Yes, Greece is "the West" as well, but idk. I'm just tired of the same Christian imagery always being used. And I say that as a Christian myself haha

I suppose the Christian imagery isn't entirely out of place necessarily, because Greece actually is deeply Christian and has been for an extremely long time (Greek Orthodox. Ancient Greek is actually the first language the Bible was translated into, fun fact!). But even so. I wanted Greek mythology, not Abrahamic religion lol

Good morning I just want you to know I couldn't stop laughing when I first read this. I don't even know why. The concept is indeed quite funny to me though and while this is a headcanon I acquired by osmosis I do have a couple thoughts about it :3

First of all the 'accidental' part of 'accidental sugar baby' is very much warranted. This was not the plan but it happened anyway and Shuuichi eventually just rolled with it because hey, he's not stupid.

It'd be incredibly funny to me if Shuuichi doesn't quite register the situation at first until one day Jodie sighs and hands him like fifty dollars and he's like the fuck is this for. And she goes "remember when we had that lovely discussion about sugar babies and bet on whether you could become one or not" and Shuuichi fucking bluescreens

But then the more he thinks about it the more things fall into place. Yukiko-san insisting on paying for the insane amounts of disguising supplies. The constant orders of a specific brand of tea from abroad he mentioned favoring one (1) time. His wardrobe no longer being solely comprised of jeans and leather jackets (there's so much stuff he doesn't even remember agreeing to getting). He is eligible to get kissed at any given time (quite appreciated). Living in the manor rent-free. "Shu-chan". The sex is admittedly fun too (this is because Yukiko-san is insane. He and Yusaku-san just go along with it /silly)

And at this point Shuuichi just sits down and goes "did I.......... accidentally become a sugar baby" (yes) (double points if Yukiko overhears and walks over to pat his shoulder and says something like "it's alright Shu-chan it happens to the best of us" and he goes what and she goes what)

In regards to the overall dynamic between them I have unfortunately not thought too much about it apart from maybe a very obvious and basic "Yukiko is the 'glue' and the one with the most initiative out of the three. Also possibly the one having the most fun". The arrangement working this well might be relatively surprising for Shuuichi who for once doesn't catch feelings at all, I think; it's genuinely just pleasant and fun times all around with no additional complications nor strings attached and it's great.

As you may have already gleaned my muse for Yusaku is basically non-existent but just this once I get to pin this one on the fact that Shuuichi's mommy issues probably vastly outweigh his daddy issues and therefore he notices Yukiko-san's actions far more than Yusaku-san's <3

Last tiny detail is that I also really want Shuuichi to tell Jodie something like "actually I had forgotten about that bet" and her going "YOU WHAT. SO THIS WAS AN ACCIDENT?????? Give me my money back" and him going "no what the fuck. This is mine now"

While working on a larger project I noticed something. In all of the glimpses into the fight between Wukong and Macaque that left Macaque scarred (and probably dead) Sun Wukong is always depicted with his pheasant tail hat.

It makes me wonder if the assumed facts are wrong about when the fight took place. ie during the journey, w/ macaque impersonating Sun Wukong briefly etc.

Perhaps the fight happened sometime after the journey? Sun Wukong comes home after the Journey and the conflict between the 2 monkeys boils over into a lethal fight

Or maybe the Macaque/pilgrim conflict happened at a different point in time, or had an different outcome initially.

before laurance became a shadow knight, his touch was always warm - like physically warm. it's something you would notice when you shook his hand, how warm he was. it was a good kind of warm. after he became a shadow knight, you would notice the opposite: he's so cold. it's unnerving. it's not something laurance noticed immediately, but once it had been pointed out to him, it's something that stuck with him. it's unnerving to him, too.

he's a physically affectionate person, and now he's always noticing how people flinch under the chill of his touch, even if they try to hide it. he remembers how cadenza used to love his warm hugs, because she was always cold. now she shivers when he holds her. when he tries to comfort people, it's a thought in the back of his mind - is the supportive hand on their arm doing more harm than good? does it not bother aphmau, or is she too considerate to mention it aloud?

aaand here's a more fun phoenix drop high headcanon - his fashion in (at LEAST) early high school was really bad. the orange hair, yes (and it was long!), but he also wore wayyyyyy too much red eyeliner/eyeshadow that made people think he was having an issue with his eyes or something. he thought it looked cool. you can be the judge, actually, i made a skin based on this hc (i did everything except the hair; that is straight from the original minecraft comes alive priest skin)

Feel like they’d probably buttheads, like I mentioned in Khorne’s big post (here) Khorne itself doesn’t have a big gambit in the death of the innocent and khaine seems to have a big hand with murder, cruelty, and sort of more irrational violence, yk? Khorne would be rather scoffing at his recklessness. In my mind, the chaos gods/3 of the big 4 have for the most part always been (don’t quote me on the 10000% canonicity of this in my au as the warhammer gods lore does get my head spinning a bit so there’s some more reading up I prolly need to do) just kinda there. Old as time itself with such strength they never really noticed the smaller godlings and pantheons formed in their wake. So when Khorne sees khaine he feels as though he’s watching a fumbling infant throwing a temper tantrum often times, who, while embodying some aspects of Khorne, is not one to one with the god, yk?

Khorne has no qualms with many other gods, in the sense I don’t see him going out of his way to one up another god or something like that, more just happen stance to stumble in their path on his quests. But I do see him taking great joy in putting khaine in his place on the rare occasion it’s opened up to him, ofc using his new sibling to hold it over khaine’s head can be a joy as well even if Khorne likely wouldn’t resort to it much lest the god really be on his nerves, but I don’t see this working long to deter the bloody-handed godling.

Khorne is the charging bull with the capability to show his kindness while khaine is a rabid honey badger with nothing but malice for all that dare breath in my mind.

Really I don’t know enough about eldar gods (I’m reading up tho bc I have a fun idea of twists to implement for slaanesh) to say much sorry <:( but I think this idea of them butting heads is very fun as both gods of war with wildly different ways that epithets defines them

It just makes sense to me (^u^) he gives a very trans swag-esque vibe in general in my opinion, and also the fact that he’s never been traditionally masculine like the other male characters on the show, especially to the characters within the show (Johnny calling him “princess” in 1x06 and Hawk-phase brick eater Eli consistently using “pussy” as an insult), adds to that difference in gender identity that I’ve slapped onto him

Also, there was the one line in 2x05 where he was like “are you guys doing shirts versus skins? ‘cause I prefer to be a shirt” which makes me point at my screen like a monkey in an enclosure going “transmetri REAL!!!” before being dragged away to the insane asylum (also the fact that we actually never see him without a shirt ever)

Greetings. I notice you use a lot of grainy brushes, and brushes with a distinct pattern. Are there any rules behind what you do with them, or do you just go with whatever feels right for a given piece?

Hello! I work pretty much exclusively off of intuition when it comes to my use of textures .. it ends up coming pretty forcefully due to my Almost Exclusive usage of brushes that have any kind of texture to them. I worry it's excessive sometimes (makes my pieces too busy/hard to look at) but it's just too much fun to give up fully.

Sometimes If I think a block of color is looking too solid, I'll just use the magic wand tool on it & start spraying the selection with a noise/textured/patterned brush to make it less uniform... it's not an exact science More like flicking a toothbrush at the canvas & seeing where it takes me. Honestly quite arbitrary.

Because I envision Barry as first gen, I think he has a soft spot for newcomers who struggle with the language barrier And I think I've written out maybe six different possibilities, some I've probably already posted here, but a (newer) favourite of mine is: Rafe and Barry make a trip off the island for a pick-up, something the older man likes to do by himself and it's the first time he's ever invited someone along to meet his supplier. Not that it's a big deal or anything. (it is, Barry's heart races every time Rafe shows even a smidgen of excitement) It's unusual for them to be so carefree. Even though Barry puts on a relaxed facade, he's always carrying, always prepared to be in some altercation. And Rafe's image and expectations loom over him, guide and guilt him in everything he does. Until they're an hour off the island, away from the judgemental stares of people who will never think they fit together, as anything. Even friends, which is all they are, of course.

On the way back they pull over at a tiny corner store to grab something to eat, knowing everything will be shut by the time they arrive back in the OBX. Rafe has zero experience with communities off the island, every vacation the Cameron's have taken so far have been to all inclusive resorts, where his family is treated like royalty; untouchable, never to be bothered. So he's a little jittery as they wander out of the truck and into the store, groups of people filtering in and out that are nothing like the self-involved kooks he's normally surrounded with, they're offering him easy greetings and stepping aside, not because of his status but out of natural kindness. It makes him stick closer to Barry with uncertainty, never straying any further than a few feet as they walk the aisles, grabbing snacks as they go. Then the checkout is backed up, two groups before them who are clearly growing annoyed as an older lady at the counter stumbles over her words, very flustered the longer the broken interaction continues. Barry can remember watching his parents go through the same thing as a child and it makes his heart ache, especially when the other customers start complaining just loud enough for him to hear. His father was a labourer and his mother did some under-the-table work, like babysitting, so he was the only one forced to socialise with the locals and in turn, learn English.

In a sense he was glad, because it meant they never had to hear the hurtful comments made about them when they were in situations just like this. So Barry takes it upon himself to step out of line, leaving a momentarily panicked Rafe with an easy be right back, to approach the cashier and bridge the gap, introducing himself in his native tongue and interrupting the obnoxiously slow-speaking asshole behind the register. Meanwhile, Rafe is standing frozen in the line, clutching a bag of crumbling chips in his large hand absentmindedly, fully enraptured by the scene playing out in front of him. He should have known Barry spoke Spanish, given how utterly obsessed he was with learning every single detail about his dealer. There were plenty of signs, he releases while thinking back, like cheerful cards with Feliz Navidad sprawled on the covers stacked amongst glossy restaurant coupons atop the fridge, and telenovelas quietly playing on the TV when Rafe finally rolls out of bed in the morning and Latin music the go-to while cleaning up around the trailer.

Still, Rafe is shocked silent, watching on as Barry listens intently before translating, again and again until the conversation has reached a satisfying conclusion. And just like every time the dealer watches over him when he's too high or drunk, every time Barry comforts him and brings him back down when he's too emotional, and every time premade plans are suddenly cancelled just because Rafe made an offhanded comment about wanting to hang out together: Rafe chest swells with affection at Barry's desire to take care of those around him.

Sometimes, admittedly, watching Barry help others makes Rafe uncomfortable. Even upset and angry. Possessiveness (even when unwarranted) tugging at his nerves, desire to be the only thing the dealer's attention goes into present at the most inappropriate times, like when some poor woman needed her tire changed on the side of a backroad. There's also a tug in Rafe's groin, too, obviously, which makes him look away bashfully when Barry finally moves to join him again. After that night it becomes a personal goal of Rafe's to see if he can elicit that part of Barry. Sometimes he'll start bickering over unimportant things, just picking apart sentences for no other reason than to be brat, just to hear Barry playfully curse him out. Rafe never misses a chance to visit with Barry's family, either, because he gets to hear his man socialise with an easiness that's usually not present and that accent Barry unknowingly slips into.

After that night it becomes a personal goal of Rafe's to hear more. Sometimes he'll start bickering over unimportant things, being a brat because it works in his favour, rejoicing when Barry playfully starts to curse him out. Rafe never misses a trip to visit Barry's family, no matter what he has to postpone, because he gets to watch his man socialise and unknowingly slip into an accent that drives the kook insane; Barry's usual southern twang, so unlike his own despite residing on the same island, showing through the foreign language, making it sound a thousand times more romantic than it already does.

It's not one-sided, either. Barry loves teaching Rafe, and that his boy is so willing and eager to learn. He doesn't laugh (too much) when Rafe butchers words, the two of them repeating it back and forth until the kooks wrapped his tongue around the syllables correctly. Barry also loves ordering Rafe around in the language he's only starting to become more familiar with, getting rewarded and praised when he follows the commands—but Barry will sometimes add on extra words just to throw him off, speak too fast for him to follow and watch as Rafe panics and scrambles to obey, giving the older man the perfect excuse to punish him. <3

What's the hardest suffix to earn in each Clan? ...Aside from -star lol

Well, -stream is a contender for that. It almost never shows up in any Clan aside from RiverClan, where it's quite popular. In terms of "hardest to earn because you have very little opportunity to use that skill", it would take first place.

Another harder one is -fang, which is largely because one tends to be more skilled in either fighting or hunting, not equally great with both. It's fairly rare in all the Clans.

In terms of "Clan-specific difficulty", there's two ways to go about it. The first is defining the difficulty as "difficult because one rarely can show off that skill thanks to the environment", which we'll set -stream aside for. The second is "difficult because the skill in question is so universal in the Clan that one has to be extremely exceptional to earn it".

For the first definition: -foot in ThunderClan, -tail in RiverClan and WindClan, and -whisker in ShadowClan.

For the second: -claw in ThunderClan, -stream in RiverClan (depending on the generation), -foot in WindClan and -tail in ShadowClan.

Hi, big fan of your designs and exploration sketches! Not sure if it'd be ok to ask this but i need some advice from another creature designer. - What perspective you have on inspration? (When people use a feature that you happen to put one ,or more, of your most favored characters)

It's hard for me to be emltionally mature about it since my art and designs are like what makes myself feel valuable, and i'm not used to seeing this happen. I guess it means now i have a long way and my work has improved enough for that to happen. But i need to hear from someone else to put out this fire in me.

Thank you! I hope you are doing well, too. I apologize for the extremely late reply. I have been AWOL from my socials and the creature design sphere in general for most of the year.

Oftentimes I make things just because I want to see more of it in the world. [The other half of the time I'm exploring what my options are as far as how to execute the same concept in as many different ways as I can think of.] So when my art inspires others to make something in a similar vein then I feel like I've succeeded in some regard. I've successfully communicated what I find appealing about a particular concept/interpritation, and did so in a way that made someone a fan of it too.

If an artist is "directly inspired" by a design then I think it is courteous for them to acknowledge that because doing so borrows on another person's work/unique perspective. [Defining "direct inspiration" as taking an aspect of a design and using it in another without making much if any changes to it.] Regular ol inspiration does not neccesitate credit like direct inspiration does because it requires understanding the what and why and how a thing works in the context of the original design, then reiterates on it so that it serves the inspired design while maintaining the essence of the original.

e.g. Hidewing was inspired primarily by Kaibutsu from GDW, both in terms of character and design. Hidewing is a design that stands on its own, but you can [hopefully] see the connection when comparing the two.

That said, I think it's normal and good for artists to feel valuable because of the art they create. Despite what a lot of people believe, art is a learnable skill, and skills make you a valuable asset to others. What does it do for you, though? You could start by putting your eggs in different baskets. That is, learning several different skills and/or mastering ones you already possess. But I don't think that'd be addressing the real issue. The real issue is that you may have placed all, or a lot of, your sense of value in something that is external and therefor unstable. People can easily lose skills or the ability to do them, can be outdone by others, the world can change in a way that makes that skill a mere novelty, and so on. Extrinsic value is important but it isn't everything, people need a sense of intrinsic value, too. Emotional maturity comes easier to those who feel secure in themself, so it might do you well to develop a sense of value outside of how you can serve other people. It's much harder to lose your sense of self or for someone to be you better than you're yourself.
