Hogwarts Fashion During Hogwarts Legacy
A cheat-sheet for making your writing/art historically accurate, and some inspiration for your MC - women's addition.
Tumblr media
Victorian fashion was complicated, both in terms of the construction and the rules that dictated when certain garments could be worn. Age played an important role in what a person was permitted to wear, so lets break it down that way:
Younger Students (Roughly years 1-4)
Generally speaking, girls dressed in similar styles to their mothers, but with altered hemline lengths. Up until roughly 13-14 years old (exact ages were decided by the girl's family) her hemline would fall around the knee. At 14 it would be lowered to the middle of the shins.
At this age girls would wear dresses, and so you could suggest that Hogwarts uniforms for girls at this age would not consist of the shirt and skirt combo that MC and various NPCs wear.
Most schools in the 1890s did not have set uniforms, but instead girls were expected to wear an apron to protect their clothes from ink and chalk dust.
At this age it was still considered socially acceptable for girls to wear their hair down, or in more simple hairstyles like braids. Popular hair accessories included ribbons and straw hats.
Time for some examples:

This is an example of a day dress (casual clothes) from 1893. Smocking (the embroidery technique used at the collar, waist and cuffs) was popular in young girls clothes.

Another example of children in day dress. The girl on the far left is probably about 13-14, the older girl on the right is closer to 15.

Older Students (Roughly years 5-7)
Around the time that the MC joins at Hogwarts, she would, depending on her personal preferences, have kept her skirt at her mid shin or dropped the hem to her ankles. Around the age of 17, girls would be expected to fully let down their hems to the floor, signifying their shift to adulthood.
At this point dresses would become less popular during the day, and were replaced by blouses (complete with very large sleeves) and a skirt. Men's tailoring and sports clothes shaped women's fashion at the time, and greatly influenced what girls wore at this age.
Girls would also typically stop wearing their hair down during the day, resorting to simple up-dos instead.
The time at which each girl made these changes depended on her and her family. While some girls had no choice but to listen to their parents, often they were able to bargain for an extra few months if they so wished.
Tumblr media
An example of two girls around the age of 15 in very typical day outfits.

A selection of school girls - those sitting are no older than 14, those standing are no older than 16.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the age of 15-16 girls would begin to attend more family functions and required new styles of clothes. These paintings show the same tea gown. These were made to be worn at home, never in public, when the family was hosted guests or a less formal dinner. They could be worn at all times of the day.
Day clothes for students who dressed as adults (17+):

A British Upper VI class (age 17-18) and some teachers in 1894. All girls now wear dresses with their hems on the ground, and hair tied up.

Middle class girls fashion in the 1890s

Tumblr media

Tumblr media
A more expensive version of a day outfit.
Tea gowns:
Generally identified by their loose fit, high neckline, and a train that falls from the shoulders. Additionally they may also be made with a large coat over the top. The shape was inspired by medieval fashion and so they're a good source of inspiration for the wizarding world imo.

Evening gowns:
Worn for the most formal evening events, and generally expose more skin than day clothes. Staple accessories included fans, opera gloves, and (if you're that way inclined) tiaras were coming into popularity at this time.
Rule of thumb for all fashion at this time, the sleeves get largest in the middle of the decade, and shrink back down again towards the end.

Guardians are the sole protectors of Fae troupes. Guardian often lead several troupes with various offsprings and mates. Today, Aries visits one of their troupes.
Aries sires 6 offsprings: Lynx (Young Adult), Syrus (Adolescent), Kree (Adolescent), Zan (Youngling), Cypress (Youngling) & Iri (Infant).
Aries has two mates; Pine and Olev, who is expecting their 7th.
Guardians sire multiple offsprings to ensure the vitality of their kind. They will engage in an intimate conception ritual with their chosen mate in the Glade, the safehaven for Fae magic.
Guardian choses their mates based on how skilled they are in things like hunting, crafting, song and dance. Once chosen, they are mates for life.
Socializing plays a vital role for young Faeries; hence, a sibling is often born shortly after a Faerie's birth. Being apart of a large troupe is essential for their survival in the mortal realm.
Faeries are known to be peaceful but can be a threat if provoked. Because their young is so vulnerable, Guardians will kill to protect them.
Hunting is a bonding experience for adolescence Faeries. They hunt together, typically lead by an elder until they are skilled enough to hunt alone. They’ll hunt small animals, such as rabbits and birds, and always perform a release ritual to return that animal’s spirit back to nature.
Young adults often remain in their troupe until they are ready to start one of their own. The offsprings of Guardians are the most successful at leading their own troupes.
Fae magic ensures a bountiful harvest wherever they reside. If a troupe abandons their home due to being hunted, nearby crops and gardens often die off from the lack of magic in the soil.
Young Faeries strengthen their magic through play. Unlike Spellcasters, Faeries can begin using magic at birth.
Guardians' mates never harbor animosity towards each other. They all share mutual respect and contribute to the prosperity and joy of the troupe.
That said, having a non Fae lover can be...complicated.

i'm sure there's a ton of world building in the haitham zhongli convos but my adhd cannot. is there like a tldr even if someone else wrote it (i don't mean this like it's bad wiritinf but i just. cannot read long blocks of info)
-@bloodlust-system
no worries i gotchu
TL;DR under cut
rainya gave him access to better equipment so he could get more info from the documens he couldn't fully process last time (that he mentioned in his other convo)
he found two documents, one a coroner's report and another a report about one of the rescued victims from the BCI (black column incident). neither of the people described in the documents show the symptoms you'd have thought they'd have given everyone assumed the explosion had been radioactive bc of symptoms on those who survived from far away. also neither of the victims had inhaled smoke nor was covered in dust and debris, and both seemed to have been in incredible mental distress when the incident happened (like more than you'd think)
he points out that none of that makes sense, bc if the explosion had been radioactive, then they would have symptoms of radioactive exosure (which they don't have). also they should've been covered in dust head to toe given the boulevard sank into the earth and- i mean the explosion. and also also they should've inhaled smoke bc of the black pillar (supposedly a smoke plume)
so if neither of the victims had inhaled smoke nor showed signs of radioactive poisoning, then was there an explosion and smoke plume to begin with? and if there was neither of those, then what the fuck even happened?
also one of the victims' files states they were recovered from the place that sank completely beneath the earth, and STILL had no debris or dust and shit. so what gives? the dating and time of the file would suggest the boulevard sank after anfortas and co. got in, so if the supposed explosion didn't sink it, what did?
(↑ that is more or less what was in the long-ass starting section. since you mention the long blocks of text are what's difficult to read, i'm gonna guess the rest of the exchange is pretty legible)
tl:dr for the tl;dr:
documents from two victims on-scene suggest the boulevard sank after anfortas and co. went in, but also that there was no radioactive implosion and no smoke plume. this puts into question what the earthquake even was if not a massive explosion, and what the black pillar was if not the explosion's smoke plume. both victims also seem to have suffered from some sort of mental meltdown when the incident took place, which is Weird.

I was discussing Korean shamanism with @agotia-t after they introduced Hanbam, and this encouraged me to finally draw my White-Naped Crane shaman OC, Chongsu (link to months old post here), as I said I eventually would. I have briefly included her in The Rod that Blocks the Lightning (here, about 2/3rds of the way through the chapter), as well.
Tumblr media
She participates in the spiritual and medicine making practices of the mudang, while avoiding the performances of the kisaeng path.
Here is an example of one of her gutdang worship rooms, in which she would perform sacred ceremonies.
Tumblr media
Generations past, a Joseon style caste system was kept in place with the help of the spiritual priest class, mudang shamans with a mixture of Confucianism and Buddhism, enjoying many luxuries and power in their caste high above most other species.
In the current day of the AU, generations after the former kings and caste systems were overthrown, the scars still remain (ex. Weasels thinking they are superior to smaller species and the squirrels needing to be reminded that they are allowed to join the soldier hedgehogs).
The White-Naped cranes spiritual practices, and preference towards the old caste system, have fallen out of favor with the general populace of Flower Hill. It is, however, very popular with the Weasels, who still hold that they are superior to the smaller animals. Many shaman leave Flower Hill to join the weasels to provide spiritual practices, something Flower Hill cannot stop due to migration permits.
Chongsu is based on a mudang shaman whose bloodline supposedly ties back the strongest to Sungmo, the mother of all shaman priestesses. Which makes her a sort of community elder despite her young age, as well as her constant mysterious illnesses.
She is a young crane, who lives in Flower Hill, too sickly to make the annual migration to Teikoku (Japan), like most of the White-Napes cranes. She and her followers assist in making medicine for the troops. Her biggest wish and command is for all species to get along with each other in harmony. What she does not realize, is that as the ‘supreme leader,’ this could possibly be misinterpreted as a command for her followers to reinstate the caste system, by any means possible, which could even mean teaming up with weasel, wolf, or tiger leaders, who also wish to return to the caste system and crush all underfoot.
In real life, white named cranes are unusual in that they primary live in the demilitarized zone of North Korea, but migrate to Japan. Shaman still exist in Korea to this day (participating in spiritual/healing leaders, fortune telling, and entertainment such as with the kisaeng), but are sometimes treated with suspicion, especially in North Korea, due to many of them, especially the kisaeng (who the Japanese troops found similar to geisha, apparently according to reports), siding with the Japanese during the invasions. As a result, the distrust and semi discrimination the Flower Hill commanders hold for Chongsu, is a hint that all is not absolutely perfect in Flower Hill.
#squirrel and hedgehog#separate pictures because I AM NOT drawing that window a third time#and I would have to if I wanted to get her in there#return of the snake wine from the Halloween posts though lol#squirrel and hedgehog OCs#guess who discovered 3D rotating and radial fill!#anyway I am unsure of what gods to use in there and I'm a bit uncomfortable all of a sudden with using the wrong ones#in the wrong context#so I used the wikipedia picture of Sungmo and a picture of crane from kung fu panda#using a crane made sense but I can remove it if it is sacrilegious#some people on Tumblr really like Crane from Kung fu Panda A LOT#but I wound up using real life cranes as references instead since it was easier#props to all of them for drawing forward facing bird heads though#Mr. Ping was good for wing reference and holding things though.
