What do you make of the "If You Kill Him, You Will Be Just Like Him" trope?

Personally, I hate it, but I think a more accurate assessment is I do not understand it. The logic, as far as I can tell, is as follows:

Villains are willing to take a life.

The hero is also willing to take a life, that being the villain's.

If the hero crosses the same line the villain is willing to by killing the villain, the hero is no better than the villain. Hence why the hero must spare the villain.

It's stupid how absolutist the logic is. We're talking about villains here. People who kill innocents, enslave populaces, destroy planets, laugh all the while, all that horrendous stuff. How is anyone "no better" than such a character just because they are willing to take the villain's life? I've never claimed to be perfect, but I can easily claim I am a better person than say, Emperor Palpatine. And if I killed Palpatine? Yeah, I'm still better than him. Because unlike him, I'm not a sociopathic, manipulative galactic tyrant, and me killing the guy doesn't change that.

Villains kill the meek, the innocent, the helpless, the good. Heroes who kill...well, they typically only kill villains who do stuff like that. There's a massive difference between taking an innocent's life and that of a bloodthirsty monster, and that's what writers who say "If you kill him, you'll be just like him" don't seem to understand.

Yes, taking somebody's life, no matter how vile they are, is incredibly serious in real life - it's why we have justice systems to non-lethally deal with criminals. But we're talking about fiction, not reality. And I think fiction should do away with the absolutist rule that taking a life inherently makes a hero as bad as the villain.

Okay... So you're willing to admit it's fiction... But you think that means our aspirational figures should do the most abhorrent acts that are possible to others just because they can. We are talking about heroes, those we are usually are told to aspire to and are the best a person can be, like the paragon Luke, and villains, who are the worst of us. We are talking about fantasy, or fantastical settings, not reality. Places that are meant to be BETTER than our reality.

And yet you think those aspirational figures should EVER commit cold blooded murder just because they can go, "Well they deserved it." Do you see why that just MIGHT be a problem?

This is actually not an absolutist argument even. Heroes can be allowed to kill. Many heroes, especially in fantasy works, do kill. Luke kills plenty of Stormtroopers after all. The difference is that that's in active combat. That is when their blood is running hot and they have to defend themselves. Do or die. Maybe there are better ways to do it, and we see with people like Batman who train to make sure they can still perform their duty like this without killing, but in that moment it can be forgiven because they are trying to save lives, stay alive and these people are trying to kill them.

When the argument of "You will be as bad as them" is deployed is when it's cold blooded. What that phrase means is that you aren't running on emotion or anything like that. Nothing is pressuring you. You can be entirely calm in this state. When your opponent is entirely helpless, at the mercy of DOZENS of options for you to take, including actually taking them to court and arresting them like a proper member of society, you can also choose murder. You can decide that this person who dislike, who you think is a threat to things you care about, who might get in your way... You can just get rid of them. You can be judge, jury, executioner and cut them down right there and then. You have other options but this is the easy one. The satisfying one. The one that makes sure they can never bother you again.

Starting to see how this is a villain mentality? How you are just being the villain if you do this? And people like to divorce the context from the statement "If you kill the villain, you are-" NO. THE CONTEXT FUCKING MATTERS JACKASSES!

When people fuck this up, it's because there isn't much of a different choice. When it is "Let the murderer go or kill him." Yeah, letting him go is the wrong option... But Batman doesn't let the villain go. Superman doesn't. They take the villain to the cops. They do their civil service so that he may be tried, judged for his crimes and a panel of their peers can decide to ship them off to prison or finally give them the death penalty. Or the hero doesn't get the chance and the villain escapes through cleverness, not just because the hero let them go because 'otherwise be as bad as you'. Any story that does that should be the one mocked, not the trope itself.

Because again, the point of the trope is to reinforce that the best of us, who we aspire to be as a people... Don't need murder. That's why most heroes don't kill at all. These people who go beyond what a person is capable of, or especially Batman honestly who is the pinnacle of what a human being can be if you dedicate your life to improvement, shouldn't have to kill. No one should HAVE to kill. Yes, in the real world we sometimes do have to. You put me in the room with a murderer and there's a gun there that I can use to live even if it means taking his life, I will probably do that because I'm a weak, scared, normal person.

Why should we expect our heroes to act like normal, scared people? Not when we're not criticizing the fact that these villains don't act like normal people. They do harm on a scale unfathomable to most people and often for reasons that are not why people do these things. They do them just because they enjoy being rampantly cruel and awful which a normal person does not do. So again: Why should we act like heroes should act just. like. Us?

So in an aspirational work, in fantasy, what is the difference between a hero who murders their enemies and a villain? Or are we just going to keep pretending that context and the point of these narratives don't matter just because some people tell you this trope is dumb because they're willing to do everything they can to paint the trope as a villain? Because I think they might not be the heroes that should keep getting championed then. See you next tale.

He still sends the abuser to the cops and used his powers to get evidence of his crimes to make sure he got locked up though... AND THIS COMPLAINT STILL CAME UP! hi!! great question and i'd love to get into it - all about claims/bonds and answers to those answers under the cut!

okay so i'm not sure how much a/b/o you've read personally, but i'm going to talk about claims/bonds/etc. all in all, so if you already know a lot of this please forgive me. i know i have a lot of readers who have never read a/b/o before, so this is also geared towards them.

the idea of claims and bonds vary from a/b/o fic to fic, so there aren't any hard rules here, but my personal interpretation is included below. if you disagree or like it written a different way that's totally fine, there's a million ways to write a/b/o and only some general principles that carry through them all.

for me, a claim is when an alpha "enacts a claim" / bites the mating gland of an omega. all of the scenting and sensuality around the neck and the glands is kind of a lead up to what nature and their designations are pushing them towards, an actual bite. Also, just to be clear, playful biting or marking is not a claim (like what Mingi did during heat) - a claim is actually breaking the skin, drawing blood, and physically marking/scarring the gland, along with the alphas INTENT to claim. it's a truly primal moment (usually done during a heat, and you may see in some fics that it's only possible to claim during heat.... but this makes no biological sense to me so i throw that away lol)... but the point is to essentially take that omega as theirs into the pack.

as an aside, alphas can claim betas, other alphas, etc, the pack members can claim each other, it can be a free for all (depending on the author) - and in some really set up pack dynamics fics you would have a head alpha that claims other alphas "under" them. this is all getting too in the weeds, but essentially, people be biting each other and getting married.

in a scenario in which you want that, or it's a positive match between alpha/omega etc., it feels good. it's a culmination of this big need and want, and omegas gain the safety and security of an alpha, and it's also just a sign of love and commitment. think of it like a marriage but x1000 because you can't really get rid of a claim. it's more of a soulmate situation.

in some fics, certainly in mine, the omega needs to claim the alpha back, creating a bond. in a fulfilled bond where two partners (or more) are bonded together, everything is intensified. not only does the whole world know you're off the market so to speak, within the bond there are shared emotions, physical sensations, and while i don't subscribe to shared thoughts... some fics will have that.

now with all that in mind.... the idea of a forced claim should seem pretty awful. the reason why our boys reacted the way they did to minseok's claim attempt and the reason why it's so traumatic for reader is that.... there's no going back. forcing a claim isn't just illegal, it's immoral, unethical, and cruel.

when the person being claimed doesn't want to accept it, but it's forced on them, they just have to live being tethered to this person. you can think of it like an abusive relationship that's hard to leave. and while it alone doesn't make you a brainless slave, if an alpha is willing to force a claim and use their tone to force submission like minseok did, you can bet they're the type of alpha who would use that power at any time. it becomes a "do as i say" relationship that would whittle away the omega's ability to be their own person. while i don't like writing something quite that painful, you can imagine all the trauma that would come with that, physically and emotionally.

i'll get into the legality of this a little later in the fic, but just so we're all on the same page.... what minseok did is deeply illegal. in my more modern universe, omegas are no longer second class citizens, but they definitely used to be years ago, and there are some old-school types who think things should go back to the way they were. for me as a writer, it's a much more engaging way to talk about women's rights issues while still being a fun fantasy setting.

the last thing to note is that when an omega is unbonded / unclaimed.... they're not as safe as they should be in the world, because shitty alphas exist. alphas respect the claim of another alpha, and that's been referenced throughout the fic. minseok really waited it out before he moved in on reader, but that's largely because for quite some time she was carrying the scent of yunho, mingi, or seonghwa.... he was being lowkey respectful to those alphas because he thought maybe there was some level of dating here / intent to claim by another alpha. but when that eventually wears off and when he sees that reader isn't in fact someone else's, he does what he does, completely disregarding reader's agency to say no.

i hope that helps clarify a little bit more about why emotions are so high with everyone and really what the stakes are here.... i'll definitely be bringing up some more about this later in the fic, but hopefully this makes sense.

Why I Ship Mareven and Yes, I'm Aware that They're Toxic

I've noticed a couple of posts questioning how some readers ship Mareven given how toxic it was and proceed to list off all the terrible things that they did to each other through out the series.

Before I start my rant. Warning, this is long and I might just ramble at the end. Also please be reminded that these are MY reasons, as to why I enjoy this ship. I don't represent the whole Mareven shipping team. I made this post based on MY observation and the desire to absolve myself from the feeling of shame for liking Mareven.

We can't deny it. Anyone who read the series, even just the first book could easily tell that Mareven is toxic.

Which leads to the most common question for this ship. Why is Mare and Maven still being shipped even after Maven's betrayal and even past Glass Sword?

Simple, it's their unique and complex dynamic. They are both deeply flawed characters that have frightening similarities. Which could have lead to a wonderful friendship or a romantic one.

However, due to their social status and political beliefs. Mare joining the Scarlet Guard to free the Reds and Newbloods from Silver rule. Maven wanting to be king of Norta and was willing to do ANYTHING to keep his crown . They are of opposition to each other's goals, which lead them being sworn enemies. Causing severe pain and suffering to the other, when given the opportunity.

Yet, there would be moments between the cruel actions and harsh words. Where one of them would show affection in hopes of rekindling what they had and the other mourning the person that they thought they knew.

Even viewing them through the lense of a non-shipper. They have a fascinating exchange of dialogue and the uncomfortable amount of tension whenever they are near each other, even the mere mention of the other's name would momentarily push them off balance. There was simply no dull moment between these two.

The REAL question should be: "Is Mareven being a toxic ship REALLY the reason some readers dislike the ship OR is there something else at play?

Before I continue: It's understandable not to like a ship, if a toxic relationships between fictional characters aren't your cup of tea.

However! I don't think "being toxic" should be the daming reason to fully drop a ship and EXPECT everyone else to do so. Because I feel that those Mareven Ship "Dislikers" don't seem to detect the MAIN cause of their dislike for this ship.

I think the dislike of the ship could be attributed from some Mareven fanfics and shippers. Maybe they dislike how they treated Mare and Maven when paired together.

For example: Mare being seen as an object or tool in fixing Maven and making him happy. Void of any emotion or flaws, as she is simply an extension to the desires and fantasies of the writer. Other cases, some Mareven shippers openly trash Mare for not reciprocating Maven's affections, as they see him as a unloved child that needs a hug. Seeming to forget that Maven is completely capable of committing atocities against the people he "loves" and other characters that were unfortunate enough to encounter him and his mother.

The simplification and misinterpretation of both complex characters once they are viewed as a couple is frustrating.

Which is why I think the EXTERNAL FACTORS, such as SOME Mareven fanfics and shippers surrounding the Mareven ship, are MOSTLY the cause that ignited the dislike for the ship not just Mareven being toxic.

To put it simply, there is nothing wrong or shameful for liking a toxic ship like Mareven. It does not AUTOMATICALLY mean you have a twisted perception of what a functioning relationship should be nor have poor reading comprehension.

I also noticed that some of those post that dislike Mareven are also Maven fans, claiming that Maven is their favorite character and are also aware of his flaws (and crimes).

So, I can even throw the same argument to them.

What's the difference between liking Maven Calore, one of the main antagonist of the series that caused harm to a number of characters, and liking Mareven that is a toxic ship where both characters were toxic towards each other?

Yes, often and well they're either coming from a place of not being knowledgeable enough about Eggman and overlook all his crimes, or it's a case where they turn a blind eye because they don't want to believe he's actually that evil because it's not to their tastes and makes them uncomfortable. And I get it but it doesn't change the facts. I enjoy getting to help people learn the solid unbiased facts about game canon Eggman, by bringing up all the canon examples of what makes him such a terrible person and try to note as many of his actions as possible that prove he really is that evil.

Being a totalitarian fascist dictator who wants to own the world and strip freedom and free will away, a war criminal who causes mass destruction and is willing to commit genocide, will try to kill anyone who gets in his way even children as young as 6-8, has been sexist, will manipulate/gaslight and abuse people and animals in various ways and enjoy it, wants to build intentionally dangerous theme parks that can kill people in brutal ways as we hear all about in Colors, and knows he's evil and acknowledges it proudly and revels in it is the most evil of evil!

We've seen many examples that show just how low he'll stoop and he hasn't been known to have a single limit in canon, besides things that get the entire planet and himself destroyed so he can't rule it, obviously. Besides that purely selfish reason, he isn't shown to have any good morally based limits and doesn't show any hesitance or remorse for his actions, despite clearly being fully aware that he's the bad guy doing the bad thing, calling it evil with glee. He's ranged from completely apathetic towards the evil he commits to downright sadistic as he smirks cheekily and laughs through it!

Those aren't actions to be downplayed or overlooked, they're important traits that define his character and are involved by countless significant plot points, including his whole motivation and methods in his plans. They're the very things that establish him as a villain and a threat in the first place. It's what puts the "evil" in "Ivo (ee-vo)." He's not the villain and not the Eggman, or even the same character at all without it, I'm not even exaggerating. But yeah point is, if someone is to deny or ignore all these intentionally or not, then they're not gonna think he's as evil as I say he is. XD

From my experience, they haven't been able to provide solid proof and evidence, nothing I couldn't disprove with my own stacks of evidence taken right from the games, if they do have any they claim to be at all. Because a lot of the things I see that they tend to try to use are things that actually prove my own point instead, when looking at them in actual context and what they really mean. So what I'd also do is debunk anything they try to use to attest to the idea that he's really that evil of a guy, using those very same things they're trying to use for their statements and much more.

I really like having sensible discussions and debates where I get to put all my heavy passionate research and analysis to use but I don't really get the chance very often because people take it the wrong way. I think if people didn't take disagreements as so hostile, we could be having some really interesting discussions. Like sure, when someone says "Eggman isn't as evil as you think" I'm like "ah hell no, no way lol" but I'm not angry or insulting, I'd just like to discuss why I disagree and share some of the reasons why, which are based in fact. I encourage others to do it to me too.

Anyway, these are usually the points I bring up when I do get the chance. Then I ready all my tons of excerpts and sources right from the games explicitly written into the text, and with some further analysis adhering to that knowledge, and sometimes additional creator commentary that's solidly backed up by the game canon as a bonus. People I've talked to have been upset by being asked for sources but I'm always passionate about gathering all my sources the second someone asks because I'm like finally I get to do something with all this information lol

Important about countries pulling funding from UNRWA:

Ayyy, Germany deciding International Holocaust Remembrance Day was the perfect date to start directly violating the Genocide convetion again!

@my fellow Germans: This better make you furious. Seriously, I'm not joking around or making excuses for your silence anymore. This should infuriate you. Your protests against the AfD and other right-wingers aren't worth shit if you don't speak out about this. Your "Never Again" means nothing if you stay silent when Germany literally does it again.

@everyone else: It's not just Germany (I'm just adressing them separately because I've got a bone to pick with my own country and their complicity right now), a lot of countries cut funding to UNRWA yesterday because of an accusation by Israel that 12 members of UNRWA's staff were involved in the 7th October attacks. So check whether your country also cut funding to UNRWA and if they did - get furious, protest, call your reps, etc.

Seriously, think about this for just a second: A LITERAL DAY after the ICJ ordered that Israel must let more humanitarian aid into Gaza, most western countries cut off aid to the organisation delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza. Because of unverified claims by Israel, all of these governments are willing to cut off funding of help to all Palestinians in Gaza immediately (which is also a war crime by the way - Collective Punishment - all of our governments are now literally commiting a war crime themselves), but a genocide accusation against Israel that the ICJ has accepted and deemed "plausible" isn't enough to stop those countries from still delivering weapons to Israel. HOW FUCKED UP IS THAT? Israel can just claim something and all of these governments will act and even go against the ICJ's orders to help them kill more Palestinians, but the ICJ's orders themselves aren't enough to make any government stop helping to kill Palestinians.

When you all call & write to your reps, mention this! Demand that your governments resume funding UNRWA and mention the ICJ's ruling (in particular the provision to let more humanitarian aid into Gaza) to back up why!

Gender non-specific, there is something to be said for the masculine 'provider' archetype. And an associative quality of presentation. Presenting as strong, stable, well-liked, almost commercial investment in people having strong attraction to them. The kind of archetype that either has an indiscreet, although yes quiet reputation of being a player/sexually non-exclusive, or just a very favored person - or, on the other hand, because of their 'capacity' to provide, full pardon in exercising what or who it is they want to pursue/do moment-to-moment. Again, these are my opinions, not express fact. But, I think the rarest consideration is that the opposite end of that stick, even a self-sufficient feminine equivalent/partner/archetype, is - to put it crudely - not wanting to feel like a replaceable piece of ass. For me, I don't exude envy of people. I don't want someone else's life. I want to raise the standard of my own. I want to be recognized for the qualities I have, not someone else's. But the men/non-binary people I've dealt with over the years - typically falling into a masculine identity (within the relationship/friendship/associated) category - are those that avoid their impact, beyond their emotions. They avoid the consequences of talking to multiple women / people at one time. They avoid the reality of their intent, which is to 'love on' multiple options at one time, and not be told to exclusively direct their attention to someone that's willing and capable of displaying that exclusivity to them. It does baffle me, that someone can claim to be in a relationship, and yes in some cases an 'open' one, and not see the discrepancy in an abject lack of compassion for how another person feels as the result of their intent/actions. It's not a blatant criticism, it's an acknowledgment of how their choices make you feel and have made you feel. Of feeling overlooked, of being overlooked. Of being treated as secondary where you have made them a priority, even yes, if one of several. You create space for them, but they give theirs very sparingly, they punish you with withholding your accessibility to them. You aren't demanding more of them than they're capable of giving, they just don't know how to give reasonably? They take the adoration, praise, and respect from you, but only show you glimpses of the same. You observe, and you stay, throughout these actions, you wait for a realization to occur, patiently, even if that patience yes, is not naturally wired into you. For myself, I can say I've had to be hyper-independent, there's never not balls in the air to swat away or juggle, I've had to exercise near-militant self control in situations/environments/interactions with pathological persons whose intent is to destroy me emotionally. Whose intent is to cause me to break down or kill myself, whether by means of them or the people they employ to push me over the edge, intentionally. So my observation of your not being present isn't a criticism, it's an observation. It's observing that the way I value my time being valued doesn't match-up with the attention and praise you feel you can receive, but I don't necessarily merit, maybe from a false perception my life seems easy, where it has never been easy. I haven't been given a light sentence, but I forge through it, and try and find compassion where I can. The times, sparingly, where I felt I have, the one thing I asked not to happen - to be rebuffed, pushed away, isolated, alienated, mocked even - is the one thing that does happen. I can be gracious, I can be pushy in terms of my concerns and feelings, it doesn't really matter the approach. I can handle things gently and calmly or react with more vitriol in my tone as a response to vitriol and callousness, but I'm still met with more avoidance. Push-back. Silence as punishment for a crime I haven't committed and a boundary I haven't crossed. I asked for answers, I'm given stalemate. I ask for presence, I'm given a lack of accountability. I ask for an apology, a consideration of how it made me feel - I'm met with discard?

Absolutely (nearly) unfounded speculation below the cut (new Papa/album related)

So I've been poking around the Ghost subreddits more than usual lately and have Thoughts.

Everything I'm saying here is pretty much pure speculation, though there are a couple people posting on reddit who claim to have some unique insights. I dunno if they're for real or not but the nice thing is, if they're right we'll know sooner rather than later!

We're going to get a new Chapter or some kind of Papa reveal either this week or next.

Album announcement March 5, single on the 6th or 7th.

Also in my digging I found someone saying that the album was actually done and should have come out late last year closer to the tour announcement, but the label is fucking around with stuff.

In general if the fuckery with Loma Vista is to be believed (who knows, but plenty of labels are crappy and LV is pretty small to be working with a band this big) then it's basically a financial tether that the band (TF) needs to resolve before they could switch labels.

I know it'd be convenient to be able to blame someone other than our fave, but also there's been a lot of promo weirdness over the last year just related to the movie (see: the one where they told people to go to random locations and then the geofence website didn't work anyway, the whole Veeps deal, how long it took to announce physical media copies) which I think lends itself to the idea.

But I digress! Let's look at timing.

Impera came out early 2022 (so likely recorded 2021), Phantomime EP mid 2023. During promo for Phantomime TF said he was already working on the new album.

In general in my experience with folks as creative as TF, they aren't stopping that process, even if it's slowed down by other commitments. 2021-2024 was full of tour dates and movie work but with travel and breaks I'd bet he was writing, even if it wasn't fully developed yet.

The last tour date for Impera was late October 2023. Rite Here Rite Now came out July 2024.

We know they had to do some extra filming, and based on analysis of the tracks, it seems like TF re-recorded clean vocals before RHRN came out.

I'm hypothesizing that he did the RHRN cleanup recordings at the same time they were in the studio recording the new album.

This would be the point where a whole lot of notes and ideas and possibly even older material that wasn't right for previous albums could coalesce into something cohesive (see: the Kiss the Go-Goat riff that he wrote and recorded while they were mastering Meliora). And because of the way Ghost albums get recorded he'd only need a handful of people to do this, not wrangle the full band.

And yeah, TF talked about taking a big break before the next tour, but if you're counting since the last tour date, that's about a year and a half. I don't think he meant that the break was from the time of the movie coming out.

Anyway, those are my thoughts based on very little evidence and mostly inference and yes, assumptions. But what else is there to do on this silly little webbed site. 💜

I guess my takeaways here are that if the label really is dicking him around, I hope the tour and album are wildly successful and that they'll make a change for the better when the time is right.

And extremely parasocially (does it make it any better if I recognize it?🤷), I hope this doesn't totally sour Tobias on the work - when I watch the interviews where you can tell he's actually comfortable with the host and getting to talk about what he loves, I feel a strong affinity for and with him and the way his mind seems to work.

I've found myself in those kinds of situations where there's lots of people relying on you so you try to do your best for them and not worry so much about yourself but the conditions just grind you down and burn you out eventually. If you aren't working with people who are willing and able to watch out for your blind spots, it can get really hard to find a way out.

You can always count on New Atheists to be advocates for tolerance and opponents of extremism, only to attack anyone whose views are the slightest hint more spiritual than theirs regardless of nuance and claim a very smug, zealot-like air of moral and intellectual superiority. If they want to keep their minds and hearts closed to anything outside the material realm, I can’t fault them for that. Some people really are better off without some form of spirituality or even if they’re just not predisposed towards it, but what these trilby-tippers don’t understand is that it isn’t a one size fits all situation. Certainly, it’s wrong of them to outright dismiss others’ personal experiences or accuse them of fraud, delusion, or attention-seeking, because it just goes to show how little they actually know or understand.

Additionally, this particular breed of atheist lends credence to many Christian stereotypes. Remember that fabricated story about the Christian student who humiliated his atheist professor? Or the movie they based on it starring Kevin Sorbo? Yeah, it’s when atheists and anti-theists start embodying the otherwise comically ignorant caricatures pushed by those stories, attacking theists* or even anyone who keeps an open mind, that they add fuel to the fire. It’s bad enough that conservative Christians (and the far-right in general) have such a severe persecution complex, or at worst, project their persecution of others who they would persecute should they reject their attempts at conversion, onto those same others. New Atheists are practically just handing out free ammunition to the religious and spiritual people they so avidly despise, then exposing their bare flesh and begging to be shot by the same extremists who are the reason behind their irrational hatred for anyone who is not an atheist, or who they perceive as not being enough of an atheist.

One thing I will concede is that I have no rebuttal for atheism as a whole. I have no way of knowing or proving if any of the "supernatural" things I've encountered are real or not, and I accept that there might very well be a rational, scientific explanation behind them. I'm not smart enough to fully grasp, let alone explain, exactly how we play such tricks on our own minds, but I'm willing to believe it's possible. I already accept evolution and the Big Bang as facts, even if there's still so much left to piece together. Likewise, I acknowledge all spirits, gods, and entities as — if nothing else — archetypes and energies, extensions of the unconscious with the myths surrounding them being just that: myths. Where once these myths were created to explain the unexplainable in primitive civilizations, they still serve a core function in present-day occultism, which is to give the practitioner something to work with.

Regardless, the New Atheist movement is quickly becoming just as much of an extremist sect in and of itself, even if that was not the intention of, say, Richard Dawkins. Similarly to many Christians who preach fear and post scripture to anyone outside their faith on the Internet in the futile hopes that they'll convert, the average Internet-dwelling New Atheist will mock and ridicule them and tell them their beliefs aren't real, seemingly somehow under the misguided impression that it will convince them to close their eyes and their minds to what they have experienced firsthand. Ironically, you may even encounter these two polar opposites in tandem with each other. No, seriously. Just check out look up occult questions on Quora. And needless to say, there's the occasional Craig Stephen Hicks, whose hatred for believers takes a murderous bend. They may be a rarity compared to other extremists, but they still exist, and that's a problem.

Furthermore, I find the insinuation that spiritually-minded people are somehow complicit in the atrocities committed in the name of religion to be absurd. By that same logic, shouldn't atheists be considered complicit in the Soviet Union's suppression of religion? Don't get me wrong, I think atheists have every right to be angry about the persecution they've faced. Unfortunately, many vocal New Atheists refuse to distinguish between your everyday person with spiritual or religious beliefs and practices, and those who would strap a bomb to their chest and take as many people with them as they can. That sort of absolutist thinking is on par with Christians who justify their antisemitism by blaming the Jews for the death of Christ, or their misogyny because Eve ate the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge and prompted Adam to do the same.

People will always do ugly things. It's human nature, and regardless of what ideology humans follow, if any, that's not about to change, and if it would, the change wouldn't be through any amount of harassment or suppression, not in the long run.

That response certainly had her smile part into a small grin for a bit, letting her expression speak for itself. Maybe that was the plan. Maybe she just finds it funny to be able to worm her way into his mind rent free, and so easily burrow inside, like a worm in an apple.

At least the dramatized gesture on pointing a finger at her was one telltale sign of him probably riding along with her vibe somewhat, and that's also good on her book.

Him being stunned over her speaking out quite a perverted scenario of him brainwashing her into being smitten to him was also the reaction she was gunning for. Its funny really, on how easy she can press his buttons and get away with it scot free.

"Very well, whateeeever you say little racoon~. I'll pretend that I believe you~."

Of course this was an attempt to further capitalize on that brainwashing joke of hers. After all, he got stunned the first time. Her seemingly not convinced that he had no intention to enact on her accusations should probably garner some form of emotion she'd find hilarious.

Either way, she would listen to his answer and reasoning in regards to paying the price for unearthing the truths of this Dreamscape.

Seems that she wasn't really wasting her time on him, after all.

"You finally managed to figure yourself out together. I should have a medal made especially for you~!" She spoke, almost a mix between harmless teasing and purposeful mocking. "You aren't as disappointing as you were back then. Truly quite the display of character development you have there, my tin knight~." The well-thought out statement of laying claim on him, as if she was taking credit for his newfound clarity, which might as well be the case.

"By the end of the day, everyone is after something in this 'sweet' dream. The Watchmaker's Legacy is quite the marvel, after all. You have no idea just how many people are after as we speak, trying to figure out how to even get a smidgen of progress on taking it for themselves. Who knows? Maybe some are already on a head start?"

Again, knowledge that Caelus already knew. Sparkle was simply repeating it, yet not revealing anything new at the same time. After all, there's a perfect time and place for an excellent punch line.

Then again, this also suggests that anyone who's after it are more than willing to commit on any act. Be it to lie for it, cheat, or even kill for it. Those are but some of many prices one should be willing to pay.

And funnily enough, these are also the same prices one should be ready to exercise if they wanted to find the truth.

Another thought process. Another puzzle for him to figure out, as if trying to figure Sparkle herself out wasn't the handful, already.

Whether she was successfully unearthing these questions, or they found themselves dug in as possibilities was simply another price to live with. Just having these sorts of emotions burgeon from the depths of his mind had him... lost. The kind of lost where a journey held an exciting anticipation, despite every conscious understanding of realizing how wrong it can go.

How do you go from wanting (and to a degree still do) to kill a person to having this measure of concern become a growing light? 'I.. goddamnit, I just have to be more vulnerable than the norm. Maybe the past me would've been having a ton of more questions and pauses but.. Right now? Shoot, her laughter is almost relaxing to hear'

..In a way, as true and as embarrassing all of this could be. It felt stupid to even picture that would be her reaction.

For an instant the daily stresses of the world rolled off his shoulder, a moment of laughter forged by this destructive branch of Elation.

"WHA--" REALLY? Going to the point where he's trying to getting a lady brainwashed off a scenario!? Just considering that level of depraved nearly made his lungs exhale out along with his breath! A set of clenched teeth and a stubborn spine would keep him braced on his perch.

"At most just being relaxed with things! If you're gonna be some mad princess and I'm stuck as a tin knight, this should be makin' things easy here!" He sputters as some haphazard attempt to clamp that situation shut.

Whether he truly managed any leeway-- For the moment, it was lost as she seemed to grow thoughtful.

..Why should she be relaxed? Was this simply asking to have his spirit tested by the fiery barbs of her creativity?

Yes I can and I will, anon 😚😊. Here I'm going to clear up some things that maybe weren't clear in the last few posts and describe a little more, if you don't mind xoxo

Y/N Targaryen (meaning you, me, all of us) is the first child born from King Viserys I Targaryen's second marriage to Alicent Hightower. She is the eldest and the first girl to be born.

She is the most loved and protected child of her mother's future children with the King. Some say it's because she's the firstborn child and the firstborn are always the most loved, others say it's because she's more attached to her father and mother than her other siblings. Either way, it's no secret that everyone loves the princess for who she is. Everyone in this blessed family is obsessed with her in different ways.

Alicent loves her daughter with all her heart, she is her most prized child and Alicent would die and kill for her if need be. It is shown that she doesn't like to deal with her children in many ways but not with you, with her precious daughter she is all patient and loves to be by her side all the time. If she could do it, Alicent would sew you up to her. Viserys is in love (platonically) with his little princess in his own way, it is quite obvious that you of his children with Alicent are the ones he prefers and loves most or considers as his child. Viserys loves to spend time with him and just talk to you about random things or problems, but he loves talking to you and it's one of his favorite things to do with you. Just listen to you ramble and vice versa. You are Otto's biggest weakness and he doesn't even try to deny it, he doesn't try to hide how much he is in love with you. There's no question who his favorite grandchild is, he loves to spoil you and I can see him wanting more of your time and, who knows, wanting to see you on the Iron Throne. This is Otto we're talking about, he still loves you dearly but he's ambitious and more than willing to make you Queen, whether it's making you usurp Rhaenyra's throne or making you marry Aegon.

Rhaenyra at first was wary around you but she gradually became more open to you and grew closer. She always wanted a sister, and even though you didn't share the same mother, she still adored you just the same. She's your overprotective and possessive big sister, wanting to claim your time just for herself. Aegon was jealous of the attention and affection you received from everyone and, therefore, kept his distance from you, but when he realized that it clearly bothered you, he decided to try to put those negative feelings aside and started spending more time with you and the more he did the more his obsession grew. Aegon found himself becoming more and more attached to you and whenever something happened he would run into your arms looking for comfort. Helaena absolutely adores you, you are the only friend she really has and she loves how you are always there for her. Helaena isn't as intense or possessive as the others, but she is a bit obsessive about you and doesn't like it when you spend time with other people. Aemond is the most possessive of his brothers and the most likely to commit murder just to be with you. He is easily jealous and suspicious of anyone who gets too close to you outside of his family. Aemond does his best and impossible to take care of you and he wants to be his favorite brother.

Daemon doesn't have much of an opinion of you and has always kept his distance and only approached you because of Viserys and Rhaenyra. As he spends more time around you the more he warms up to you and soon Daemon will become obsessed with you as well, but in a more murderous and possessive way, clashing with Aemond for these reasons. Corlys and Rhaenys aren't that close to you because they live outside of King's Landing but when they go there it's nothing new that these two will be close to you, they like you and spend as much time as they can around you, but always keeping an eye on their own actions on behalf of the rest of your family. Similar to their parents, Laena and Laenor are still more distant than the rest of the family but closer to you than their parents. Laena adores you and spends hours talking to you. Laenor likes to fight ans you so if he gets the chance he will teach you how to wield a sword. Of course, this was kept secret from your parents.

Jacaerys and Lucerys are very close to you on account of their mother, in fact you are the closest aunt they have. Jacaerys is in love with you (either romantically or platonically) and he wants to stay by your side. He's not as possessive but he still gets jealous when you spend a lot of time with other people, he wants to take care of you even if it's not really necessary. Lucerys is attached and extremely clingy to you, bordering on possessive at times. He cries out for your attention and approval constantly.

You need to learn to divide your attention with your family because if you don't, it could end very badly.

Chris did Alex dirtier this season than Carina did in S2, and I truly didn't think it was possible. Between no recognition of his S2 treatment with bonus Delmanes, keeping Malex in the bubble even in an established relationship, and stripping him of his one decent family member and only friend to talk to, I am struggling to think what he got out of this season just for himself. And even established Malex, as effortlessly amazing as Vlamburn are together, slowly became about Alex giving Michael a series of pep talks for his growth, which just reminds you that Alex 1) had to get there completely on his own with no support whatsoever and 2) was already fully committed to Michael by 1x13 and willing to open up about the hard stuff. He's been mostly waiting around for Michael ever since. I don't know what S4 has in store for him, but now I am as wary of what Chris claims to love as I was of Carina.

I'm not sure if it was worse than season 2 and forcing him to be smiling and supportive of m*luca while making him constantly remind m*ria that Michael is actually a good person worth spending time with and doing all her emotional labor in the relationship while also being Michael's punching bag when c*rina thought angst was needed, and being Michael's emotional support when m*ria was too busy gaslighting, gatekeeping, and girlbossing to be bothered.

But the fact that season 3 refused to even think about addressing Alex's mistreatment last season while having him constantly talking about how wonderful m*ria is was especially heinous. And taking his brother and turning him into an entirely different person and then only letting him have scenes with m*ria (and the group with everyone acknowledging them no less) was an added slap in the face. Like you said, Alex has been ready since he came to talk to Michael about him being an alien. He wanted to build a solid foundation at that point, but finding out Michael was trying to leave forever obviously freaked him out a little. But instead of being allowed to talk about it, they had to suffer through that dumpster fire of season 2 and then they weren't even allowed to address it this season! Don't get me wrong, I ADORE domestic Malex and I do think that once they went all in on the relationship that's exactly how it would play out, but we missed seeing the lead up and hashing out of things BEFORE they got together, but then we also didn't really get to see it AFTER either, because they still aren't allowed to address the season 2-shaped elephant in the room.

It's just so deeply frustrating because they had the set up this season to deliver some really great storylines and to allow Vlamburn to give Malex the kind of story they want to tell, and to allow Tyler to FINALLY be allowed to dig into Alex like he so desperately wants to do. But there was no time, because instead they decided to make half the season about m*ria instead of any of the ACTUAL important plots of the season and everything suffered. But man do those graphs tell a story about who suffered the most.
