In Super Mario 64, the "Blast Away the Wall" star is notorious for being difficult to find for some players, particularly without guides and who do not immediately infer that this relates to shooting Mario at a wall from a cannon.
There is an alternate way a player could discover where the star is, though due to its situational nature, it is impossible to say whether any players have actually discovered the star this way in practice. If the player reaches the top of the fortress and then looks down from the top, paying close attention, it becomes apparent that the breakable walls are missing, and the star can actually be seen inside one of them (directly to the left of Mario's head in the footage).
Of course, this is simply due to the fact that the regular walls are course geometry, which is rendered at all times, while the breakable parts of the wall are separate objects and have a finite rendering radius to conserve resources. The top of the fortress is far enough away to cause the breakable walls to stop rendering.
If a player notices this and tries to jump down to get the star, the walls will reappear and the star will once again not be visible, which may be taken as a hint that the walls can be destroyed.

Note
hi I hope you don't mind but I would love to hear your long tired historian rant you mentioned in your tags on that one post, if you feel in the mood to share? (no pressure!)
(also thank you for existing, you do wonderful work and the world is a better place for you being in it)
Aha. Well. For context, the mention of said rant was in relation to this post:
Tumblr media
Basically, this post struck a nerve because of how it exactly encapsulates the anti-intellectual, anti-academia, anti-historical, anti-reality thinking that is absolutely rampant in social media spaces, even and especially spaces that identify as leftist, liberal, or otherwise "superior" to the right wing when it comes to identifying fake news or misinformation. (Example A: anything ever written by a self-proclaimed leftist on Twitter.) We all know that there are huge problems with the American public school system (and the people writing this are almost always American) and the American practice of education in general, and that yes, there are many things that happened in the past (or y'know, the present!) that are not taught very well, or at all. But because the American public school system is so decentralized and largely autonomous, incredibly dependent on the temperament of local superintendents and/or school boards, taxation and funding, availability of teachers, requirement of useless standardized tests, etc., it is very difficult (if not outright impossible) to claim that this is the result of a Unified Grand Conspiracy To Not Teach Real History To The Youth In Order To Make Them Mindlessly Support Capitalism. That is the exact sort of deranged conspiratorial thinking that the right wing does and fits everything into a sinister narrative about how "They" are planning to keep you ignorant and therefore nothing harmful that you ever think or do is really your fault. It's not good.
(Whoosh. That was very calm and reasonable of me. For the rest of this post, please just picture Captain Holt "apparently that's a trigger for me" dot gif.)
Also: even in public school, and despite the Republicans' best efforts, there are plenty of opportunities to study complex or "controversial" subjects. For example, I spend a week every June grading AP Euro History exams with a lot of other educators in a giant windowless steel box (woo-hoo, fun times!) Every year, there are questions on the exam about women's rights, imperialism and exploitation, slavery/race relations, the development of capitalism and the current economic model, religion and science, the history of labor, and other topics that would be considered "controversial" if you're an idiot. This is an exam taken by high school students in all grades from across the country, and there are also AP World History and APUSH (US history) exams every year which are doubtless making an effort to address similar themes. This is an advanced program, yes, but it's widely available to many schools and is not a result of a sinister plot to keep the youth from discovering the truth. Also: you live in an era of absolutely unprecedented access to information. Put down the ChatGPT bullshit generator and visit a goddamn public library. Or even open Wikipedia. The tools are there for you to start educating yourself and they are so easy to find!!!!!
The "Historians Are Hiding The Truth!!!" narrative becomes even more ridiculous in university-level or professional academic historical-study spaces, especially when historical educators and associations (such as the American Historical Association) have been at the forefront of pushing back against right-wing efforts to censor history, punish teachers, and remove culture-war subjects from classrooms. Also as someone who has advanced degrees in history, has taught/worked in several universities in different countries, writes and publishes historical research, and otherwise participates professionally in the field: trust me, we aren't "hiding" shit. There are vigorous debates and disagreements on various bogglingly obscure subjects and points of clarification and so forth, but that doesn't mean we're not talking about them (trust me, we're often talking about them too much). If you're issuing confident blanket statements about how "historians are conspiring to hide x," you're an idiot.
This also has dangerous repercussions in the field of, say, politics and civics, where a lot of absolutely braindead Online Leftists have spent the last four years posting deranged nonsense on social media and then, whenever they're called out on it for that not actually being how anything works at all, whining that "I was never taught this!!!" (And yet, it somehow never actually changes their perspective or their theories....) They whine about how "they didn't know this" and it was someone else's fault, they make up total fantasy about what the Biden administration did or should have done and now are still happy about Trump coming back because "It will teach the Democrats a lesson!!!" and otherwise accelerating us oh-so-quickly down that slippery slippery fascism slope. Their weaponized ignorance and their magical fantasies about what "should" have happened often come back to this same learned helplessness, where it's everyone else's fault (especially Capitalism's) that they're total wankers. Look: I'm not a goddamn fan of capitalism either. But we all grew up in this same system, and some of us aren't raving idiots, so at some point, you have to take the tiniest modicum of personal responsibility for the information you seek out, the content you consume, the opinions you propagate, and the people you surround yourself with. Shocking.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Online Leftists are actively and unrepentantly enabling American fascism and should be treated in the same way as we treat MAGA when it comes to deciding what is good or worthwhile information. This is because their entire political philosophy (insofar as their beliefs can be dignified with the term) is based on the "make shit up and remove it from any basic empirical references, grounding in reality, or 'should I run the most basic Google search and see if I'm completely talking out of my ass in a distorted social media echo chamber? Nah I'm good' " technique. This is, as the original tweet above references, trying to retcon sheer malicious laziness and stupidity into grand ideological theories about how it's actually "better" that they don't know a damn thing and won't shut up. It's your evil history teacher's fault, or "academics are all rich and elitist" (ask any academic-precariat person like me and we will laugh hollowly and then throw monkey poop at you), or "They" wouldn't let you learn this, or on and on. Even in our terrible, awful, no-good very-bad timeline, there are still ample tools to educate yourself, to learn how to filter out bad information and junk news, and otherwise gird yourself even a little for the even-more-massive assault on empirical reality that we are about to experience in the next four years (ugh). I suggest you take advantage of them.

In Super Mario Galaxy, there is a somewhat hidden bee NPC found on top of the tree that Luigi clings to in Honeyhive Galaxy. Since the crown of the tree has no obvious way up to it and is also extremely slippery so that standing on it is impossible, it is difficult to see this bee's dialogue, which is "My tummy is rumbling..."
There is no further reward for discovering this bee.

The Copied Cathedral: Drakengard
In September 2022, something odd happened.
A group of talented NieR: Automata modders released footage of a church they added to the game on reddit and twitter. It was a pretty big accomplishment - Automata’s engine is difficult to work with, and many players with a cursory familiarity with it felt that this kind of addition to the game was unfeasible, so for something of this scale to be created represented a shift in the landscape of NieR modding. However, this achievement was practically rendered irrelevant by the way in which they chose to reveal their work: an arg/”hoax” wherein they pretended to “discover” the mysterious church in an unmodded copy of the game, presenting it as a long-hidden easter egg.
This gained unusual traction. This kind of thing happens a lot, but I’ve rarely seen it gather the kind of steam the copied cathedral did. The collective practiced cynicism of the internet, as well as the increasingly white-box nature of our favourite games, reliably helps quash the kinds of rumors that would easily gain traction on the playground, when it was much harder for someone to definitively prove you a liar when you claimed to have climbed aboard a rocket and shot off into space to find Deoxys in Pokemon Emerald. And I think there’s a pretty clear reason for this: anytime anyone expressed scepticism over the church and its impracticalities, they were met with the same refrain.
“It’s Yoko Taro. Of course he would do something like this.”
This refrain remained intact even when how people engaged with the modders’ work changed. In the beginning, it was “It’s Yoko Taro. Of course he would include an easter egg that people would only find 5 years later!” When it became clear that the cathedral did not, in fact, exist in the game, it became “It’s Yoko Taro. Of course he would craft an ARG to tease future NieR content.”
As someone who has had a relationship with Taro’s oeuvre since playing NieR at 14 years old, this was all very confusing to me. Because the Yoko Taro that I thought I knew didn’t do stuff like this. None of his games were ever advertised with any kind of obscure ARG disseminated through social media. His games didn’t really have obscure secret content that remained secret for years after the fact. I thought Yoko Taro was a guy who directed games with sweary, murderous protagonists connected to each other through intricate lorebooks that never left Japan…and showed up to promote Drakengard 3 as a sock puppet. Without my realizing it, what “Yoko Taro” was had changed, and he had become, in the eyes of many, a kind of mystical trickster, whose mad genius was simultaneously incomparable and unpredictable, whilst also falling into neat patterns that were easily and instantly recognisable.
Did I miss where these collectively agreed readings of Taro and his work came from? And if not, where did this perception of Yoko Taro come from?
When did Yoko Taro become Yoko Taro?

In The Copied Cathedral Branch A: Anarchy in the UK
It seems appropriate, somehow, when talking about Drakengard, to start at the very end. That’s where the conversation often begins and ends, isn’t it? In the public consciousness, this game is practically a footnote, an inciting incident to the more significant, more complete work; this is the game that led, in one of its endings, to NieR, and in turn, to NieR: Automata.
This history weighs heavily on Drakengard. It’s practically impossible to imagine anyone experiencing it now without some knowledge of how it connects to the various strands of Yoko Taro’s Cinematic Universe. I’m very much included in that - “Ending E leads to NieR” was the first thing I learned about Drakengard, and it was the curiosity over what that meant that led me to the game. It’s unfortunate, then, that this approach completely inverts what Ending E of Drakengard actually is - a joke.
Going through the experience of unlocking Ending E and playing it for yourself makes this so clear in a way that hearing about it second-hand will never quite manage. You have to go through the painstaking task of finding every single weapon - some of which have requirements so arbitrary and obscure as to practically necessitate a guide - only to unlock an ending where absolutely none of them are required. You play a rhythm game to the tune of the game’s deliberately abrasive and discordant soundtrack, and then are unceremoniously shot down. And in case there was any doubt left, the game laughs at you after thanking you for playing.
In context, this is a prank played on completionists, a surprise sucker-punch that revels in what a stunning anticlimax it is. Good job, buddy! Thanks for spending hours of your life pressing square-square-square-triangle, or maybe circle if you’re nasty. Here’s your reward: a confirmation that you wasted your fucking time.
And to be clear: I think that’s great. It’s a joke that just gets funnier the more it builds throughout the rhythm game section - starting off easy, and remaining manageable throughout, until you finally reach a section that is so unbelievably difficult practically out of nowhere, pulling the rug out from under you just as you’ve managed to stumble to your feet. It’s audaciously mean, and utterly wonderful.
But Ending E isn’t a surprise anymore - it’s the most famous part of the game. Ending E of Drakengard is, now, the opening notes of one of the most beloved - and lucrative - series’ in Square Enix’s roster. For most people who play the game now, it’ll be the reason they’re here, either literally, or metaphorically, as their NieR curiosity brings them to this title. For NieR fans, this is not an anticlimax punchline to hours of tedious weapons collecting. This is the final battle between The Dragon and The Queen Beast, a battle fought in terms incomprehensible to the fragile human psyche, ground zero for White Chlorination Syndrome and the Legion, and the beginning of the end of the human race. The fact that I can come out with that jargon without having to take a trip to the NieR wiki demonstrates that I too, am infected with the future history of Taro et al’s work, work that has collectively robbed this sucker punch of its impact, and turned it into the most laboured Marvel Cinematic Universe teaser in the history of the medium. What a terrible thing to do to something you helped create.
I don’t mean this to say that the mere existence of NieR has destroyed the intentions of Drakengard, but history’s shadow has undoubtedly fallen heavy on this game, obscuring a lot of  what it actually is, even down to what the minute-to-minute play of the game is actually accomplishing.
Tumblr media
The common reading of the game these days is that it is intentionally unpleasant to play in order to comment on or satirize violence in video games. I can see it! Drakengard’s combat is often described as monotonous, but I don’t think that’s quite right. True monotony would turn it into routine, and could potentially allow the player to sink into a flow state that makes the game drift past you. Instead, the game is interested in creating little sticking points that force you to keep yourself present in the fight. Whether it’s long-range attackers, the game’s propensity for enemies to strike at you from outside of the camera’s vision, or scattering enemies in among the packs that require you to approach them slightly differently, the game manages to keep its killing a conscious, methodical act, never letting them forget about the things they’re doing to others.
But how different is this from its contemporaries? Many of the features I’ve described here - a camera that doesn’t always effectively every threat, parceling out enemy encounters into smaller waves - aren’t unique to Drakengard, but are common to many of its contemporaries on the PS2. In particular, Drakengard does not feel noticeably more abrasive than the PS2 Dynasty Warriors games that the ground battles are in direct conversation with. It’s not identical - Drakengard choosing to strip out the light strategy framing of Dynasty Warriors to focus entirely on killing enemies is notable - but playing a Warriors game alongside Drakengard made the latter feel less like satire of the former and more like imitation - the sincerest form of flattery. If Drakengard is boring, it might simply be because the form it is most closely emulating has often struggled being a critical darling. In fact, for a certain generation of people, the musou form is practically gaming’s biggest and most laughable punching bag.
This accusation of the combat being, in some sense, deliberately unfun, in particular, largely fails to explain the dragon-riding sections. In the hybrid levels - where you can hop aboard your dragon to rain death from the skies - it arguably acquits itself in this context well enough, particularly with the choice to use an awkwardly close-up camera angle that frames you above the ground but close enough to it to see bodies flying from every fireball and explosion you cause. Anti-air attacks are common and send you flying off your dragon, a consciously annoying friction which again forces you to remain in the current moment and avoid zoning out. But equally, this friction often comes with it a straightforward payoff - the satisfaction of, having eliminated any anti-air threats, of hopping back on your dragon and incinerating an entire platoon of soldiers. Less interesting is the dedicated dogfight missions. Here, there is no sense of weight to the violence at all, and the enemies themselves are so abstract - often being literal evil cubes that shoot lasers at you - that it’s hard to derive any sense of humanity from them. It can definitely be read as an extension of the slight abstraction of the violence that happens when you hop on your dragon during the ground missions - we’re so far above the violence now that we can’t even see the viscera that is so present on the ground - but that just ends up ringing hollow for me.
Tumblr media
No, I ultimately think that Drakengard’s air combat is engaging in very straightforward, very traditional ways. I enjoy it. In particular, the weight of the Dragon itself makes those moments where you swoop down to let loose a volley of lasers genuinely thrilling, in a kind of way that even contemporaries like Panzer Dragoon don’t quite emulate. And yet, despite these sections comprising a significant portion of the game’s runtime - around a third unless you’re going for 100% completion - they seem to elide the conversation surrounding this game as a satirical work. The fairly straightforward video-gamey thrills of flying a big dragon around and shooting lasers at monsters and evil imperial airships would seem to simply be somewhat inconvenient when attempting to explain Drakengard as a deliberately boring game.
I’m being cheeky here, I know. But I do think there is a huge sword of damocles, with the words “PS2 GAMES KINDA PLAYED LIKE THIS A LOT” etched into it, that hangs over anyone reading Drakengard as tedious on purpose. For all that the PS2 and its library is often lauded as one of the high points in the entire history of the medium, growing up owning one didn’t mean you were playing a Resident Evil 4 every time you put a disc into your console. Sometimes you came home from the game shop with something that played quite a bit like Drakengard.
This commonality it shares with its contemporaries is core to what I think Drakengard is actually doing with its violence. I am not suggesting that Drakengard is not abrasive at all, because to suggest they is to ignore what’s happening on the aesthetic layer, particularly the utterly phenomenal score composed by Nobuyoshi Sano and Takayuki Aihara, which is not only probably the best thing about Drakengard, it’s probably one of the best in the medium. Making use of discordant, cut-up, and repeated samples of classical music, the soundtrack drapes the entire game in an uncomfortably dissonant air without falling into completely atonal noise.
Similarly, the dialogue that plays over the gameplay, while presented in a manner not dissimilar from Dynasty Warriors, is of a very different tone, even if it is equally unsubtle. Priests crying out that the world is ending, rival dragon riders going mad, dragons remarking about the worthlessness of humanity and your cause…It isn’t quite Cao Cao talking about how big his brain and dick is, even if it operates on a similar register.
This is an aesthetic dissonance that highlights the ludonarrative resonance that drives the game. It is also a reasonably common maneuver. If you’ve ever played a game with a sad piano track playing out over a boss battle, you’ve seen this before, though admittedly rarely on this kind of scale. Drakengard is less interested in being truly aberrant as it is in this kind of aesthetic dissonance bringing the genre’s assumptions into relief.
This helps explain why some might find the story of Drakengard far simpler than its reputation - or the reputation of its director - might suggest. An evil empire is conquering the world and destroying a series of Seals in order to awaken some dark gods, and the protagonists would prefer if that didn’t happen. It is, quite consciously, an extremely stock video game plot. The difference, of course, is that said protagonists are led by Caim, whose personality, goals, passions, hobbies and sexual fetishes can all be described the same way: “killing imperial soldiers”. Drakengard sees the two points common to the collective idea of the archetypal JRPG hero - dead parents and a high bodycount - and draws a direct line between them, constantly underscoring that Caim is wholly uninterested in protecting the world, and acts in the game entirely to express the trauma of his parents dying in front of him.
(Actually, side note - one part of that isn’t quite true; the game is surprisingly resistant to the claim that Caim’s enjoyment of killing is in any way sexually motivated. It’s just not something the game wants to touch. The game exclusively uses sex and sexuality as a point of straightforward horror and taboo-crossing in a way that is quite revealing. More on this in a moment.)
Angelus is Caim’s dragon partner, and an absolute riot. She’s almost everyone’s favourite character in Drakengard, and it’s very easy to see why: she drifts above much of the emotional conflict of the narrative, commenting and mocking it in equal turns, like a one-dragon greek chorus, or, if you prefer, a fire-breathing Statler & Waldorf. Crucially though, she remains invested enough in the narrative to never become an annoying figure of detachment. She’s not riffing on things, like a Marvel character might, as if she’s not part of the same world as the rest of the cast, she just has very little patience for the affairs of humans despite her forced entrapment within them. It’s a very delicate balancing act to walk, writing this kind of character without making them irritating, and it's a testament to the script, and particularly the performance, that Angelus comes across so well. Mona Marshall’s dub Angelus is pitch-perfect, infusing her dialogue with a careful balance of righteous, haughty indignation and weary resignation that makes her an absolute delight to listen to as she mocks the worthless humans you and her are roasting with dragonfire, especially once notes of affection towards Caim begin to creep into her character. In a dub of mixed virtues, she’s consistently fantastic, and it speaks volumes that despite this kind of side-glance to the audience becoming a recurring theme in Taro’s work, it's never as successful as it is with Angelus.
Alongside Caim we have Furiae and Inuart, the central love triangle that drives the narrative. Furiae is Caim’s sister, and the Goddess; a pure shrine maiden whose enforced chastity seals away the Empire’s dark gods. She’s also completely infatuated with Caim, who pointedly avoids confronting her incestuous feelings towards him throughout the game, even as her longing and desperation for him builds and builds, to the point that even Angelus comments on it. Inuart is Furiae’s betrothed, a soft-spoken bard whose sexual frustration at and jealousy of Caim leads him to become brainwashed and turn evil. And then there’s Manah, the game’s villain - an evil little girl who, after being rejected by her mother in favor of her twin brother Seere, turns to the Empire’s evil gods for the love that she has been denied, becoming their possession and instrument in the world.
Tumblr media
This is the actual core theme of Drakengard - that of rejection and resentment, unprocessed, unexpressed, unrequited feelings left to fester and rot, turning outwards onto the world itself, of this kind of unfulfilled need being the origin of violence in the world. For all the hyperbolic claims of Drakengard’s essential horror, it all settles into such a disappointingly neat and straightforward freudian framework. Every character - aside from Angelus - is fundamentally reducible to their singular freudian frustration. This makes the game’s perspective somewhat limited, but also makes it incredibly clear and transparent - there’s no avoiding these taboos.
It’s not that this is entirely bad - I actually think Caim and Furiae’s relationship in particular is extremely effective, the obviousness of the taboo being brought into sharp relief by how Caim simply refuses to engage with it, letting the emotions fester and fester until, at the point when they are directly stated to him and he can no longer pretend that he cannot see them, his final rejection really hits hard. I particularly like that the game is uncharacteristically ambiguous on the point of whether or not Caim reciprocates Furiae’s feelings, which brings a messiness to how their relationship ends that really works. But by and large, the game is so laser focused on the binary contradiction of each character’s familial trauma, they always break in the exact same way, and it reveals just how little the game actually has to say on its own central topic.
This becomes particularly apparent once you look at the other playable characters, who aren’t so much one-note as they have about half a note to share between them. Leonard is a kindly and empathetic priest who also happens to be a pedophile. There’s Arioch, a jokerfied elf cannibal who eats babies because she was driven insane by losing her womb in her pact. And then there’s Seere, a young boy who will remain a young boy forever thanks to his own pact. He becomes friendly with Leonard. Each of these characters will send you on side-stories that all feature you slaughtering children.
Tumblr media
It’s not just that the transgression here is largely shallow, it's that it's the same transgression, over and over. The conflict between the central trio at the very least is driven by exploration of a theme of unrequited love and the enforcement of taboo reaching a breaking point - for the rest of the cast, there is nothing there except for the taboo, and the taboo encompasses their entire characters. Arioch is a particular low point: the outrageous misogyny inherent in the depiction of a woman being driven completely insane by losing the ability to reproduce is self-evident, as is the game’s complete lack of sympathy for her in comparison with even Caim, but it’s everywhere when it comes to these characters. You can just imagine the sneer on the game’s face as they describe Leonard, the “aha! Isn’t that fucked up!” of quality of the reveal that the nicest member of the party is actually a pedophile. For all that I am willing to be sincere in my engagement with the game’s exploration of familial violence, there really isn’t anything to the missions where you engage in mass slaughter of child soldiers other than “isn’t this fucked up”. And I don’t object to it being fucked-up: my problem is that it’s so one-note that it isn’t fucked up at all. The shock is so surface level that it becomes boring extremely quickly. It’s all so fucking teenage.
Put a pin in that.
What the game does gain by how incredibly loud and unsubtle it all is, is that it becomes impossible to ignore. The viscera of the relationship drama is as in-your-face as the viscera of Caim’s violence, and achieves the same effect as the game’s soundtrack (though, less effectively than that). How surface-level it all is may make Drakengard largely unsatisfying to consider on these terms, but it is effectively oppressive, and I think that is key to why the game lingers in the memory.
As the game goes on, its narrative begins to fray at the seams, sometimes in disappointing ways, and sometimes in delightful ways. The game’s standard ending is fine enough, and sings when it caps off the burgeoning romance between a murderboy and his dragon in an oddly sweet and earnest manner. Caim and Angelus’ odd and sad relationship is easily my favorite part of the game’s narrative, and is, interestingly, something director Yoko Taro fought against depicting in this way, by his own admission. Taro wanted Caim to be as a parasite to Angelus (interestingly, a reversal of the relationship between the Dragon and its rider in Panzer Dragoon, where the will of the rider was subsumed unconsciously by the will of the Dragon), but at the suggestion of producer Takuya Iwasaki, scenario writer Sawako Natori imbues their relationship with an earnest romance without dodging some of the more toxic suggestions of it, and it ends up being the highlight of the game’s writing. It is worth noting, when considering the direction of future games in this series, that almost all of the game’s most effective moments come from treating the relationships with sincerity instead of shock.
But of course, this isn’t really the end. As would become tradition for the games in the Drakengard/NieR lineage, the game offers a series of branching routes that lead to different endings. As the series would go on, this tradition would become increasingly superfluous, wielded more as an aesthetic and expectation than anything else, but in Drakengard, there remains something exciting about it, as each branch splits further and further from this relatively sedate ending until you finally arrive at the punchline that we all now know is coming.
Tumblr media
Route B feels like the “truest” ending to the game, engaging most with the themes of toxic affection that end up driving the plot. Inuart tries to resurrect Furiae, and does so…but as a monster that kills him, grows giant, and has to be put down by the player. Caim finally confronts his sister and their relationship in the only way he can: murdering her enormous, twisted, eikon. It’s a classic gothic move, but it's the twist of the knife of the route’s final shot, the sky being filled with countless more Furiae monsters, that is distinctly Drakengard. It’s fitting that the game’s theme song plays at the end of this route, rather than the others. This feels like the end of the road for these characters, so it's no surprise that the following routes feel more like we’re veering off that road into far stranger and far sillier territory.
Route C, on the other hand, is a total misfire. If the last route was the one that felt like it most naturally emerges from the themes of the narrative, then this is the opposite - the one where the entirely offscreen Dragon species decide apropos of nothing that, actually, they’d like to conquer the world, and so Caim and Angelus must do battle. The two lovers battling to the death should be something really impactful, but ends up as a baffling wasted opportunity. Without the care and investment the scenario brings to these characters elsewhere, Route C is a glimpse into a version of Drakengard that didn’t have the touches of earnest investment that elevates these ludicrous mean-spirited caricatures - a hugely boring video game. I’d say that it would be better if it had been cut from the game entirely…if not for how the feeling of the narrative being derailed in this way lays the groundwork for the game’s incredible - and I mean that in both senses of the word - climax.
Branch D is probably the most iconic part of Drakengard, and it is definitely the part of the game that left the greatest impression on me when I first saw it as an 18-year old. Here, the involvement of Manah’s twin Seere makes things with his sister even worse, as he regards Manah’s desire for affection with horror and tells his Golem to kill her, which the God possessing Manah does not take kindly to. Thematically, the route ends here: another rejection, another breakdown in familial bonds - and interestingly, a parallel drawn between Seere and Caim’s respective emotional stuntedness towards the feelings of their sister being drawn but never developed - leading to disaster. You could see a version of Drakengard that has the same approach as Branch B, simply cutting off at the point at which the doom of humanity becomes obvious, but delightfully, the game simply keeps going, setting its final few chapters in the invasion of the Watchers - who, of course, are giant stone babies.
Tumblr media
Of course, here we return to the problem of the future. It's not just that this turn has been spoiled - plenty of works, even the majority, retain their power even after they have been spoiled. Contrary to the opinion of the most annoying guy in your film class, knowing what “Rosebud” is does not actually make Citizen Kane less electrifying. But the power of Branch D is, to me, entirely within the shock value of it. Its excitement is in the sense of how completely the narrative has been derailed. When you know about the giant babies ahead of time, the shock of their appearance is less effective.
However, unlike Ending E, whose intention I do think is somewhat obliterated by the context by which most players will find it, I actually think the conscious anticipation of this moment by a player of Drakengard coming from the present day won’t rob them of the effect, because the audacity of it all is still enjoyable. It’s an absurd literalization of the game’s shallowest engagement with familial love and desire as violent: evil babies that are going to eat you all…and that you must slaughter in their dozens to survive. I remember showing this scene to friends when I got to it, purely and straightforwardly to say “look how weird and fucked up this is!”, and see their reaction to it, devoid of all the context of the game leading up to this point, which I think is telling. It wasn’t important to me that they knew that this was a game filled with the need for love turning violent. It was important that they see just how weird these evil babies were.
There was a point in my life where, for those around me, the funniest type of joke in the world was the erstwhile Dead Baby Joke, a type of joke where the punchline is always, in some form, a dead baby. The punchline here is pure, naked transgression - you can’t joke about a dead baby! It’s the same kind of impulse that makes swearing when you are a kid fun, of sneaking into a movie the age certificate declares you too old for, and approximately 95% of the reason anyone plays Grand Theft Auto - the fun of breaking boundaries for the sheer thrill of breaking boundaries. And in a game that has made the transgression of taboo the core of its entire being, this feels not like an elaboration of its themes so much as the literalization of them in the most audacious way possible - the invasion of the dead babies.
It’s worth comparing this to the series that Drakengard is perhaps most in aesthetic conversation with aside from Dynasty Warriors: Panzer Dragoon. While Ace Combat was the direct inspiration for the flight mechanics, Panzer Dragoon is the source of much of how they look and feel. And, interestingly, it too is a series that wrestled with the astronomically high bodycount of its game in Panzer Dragoon Saga, the third game in the series which reinvented itself as a to-this-day utterly unique RPG. Set decades after both of the previous games, but not so far that their events have fallen out of living memory, Saga reframed the events of those games as world-shaking historical events that have turned the Dragon into an icon of power not unlike a Weapon of Mass Destruction. Much of the plot of the middle stretch of the game is defined by the factions of the story attempting to control the era-defining power of the dragon, as much because of the fear and symbolic weight of the Dragon as its ability to shoot lasers.
Tumblr media
This reaches its head in one of the game’s best sequences, where the mayor of the hub town asks the player character to assault a nearby Imperial base with their dragon. The mayor knows that this won’t deal a major blow to the empire, but is attempting to demonstrate the use of the dragon as a deterrent against the empire’s moves to annex the town so that he can get elected as the new leader of the town. This, of course, backfires massively when the Empire responds to the threat of the Dragon by bringing their own Weapon of Mass Destruction to the frontline and wiping the town off the face of the map, an irreversible scar left on the game map, removing (almost) every single NPC and sidequest related to the town from the game, all in response to the threat the player and their dragon represents.
The difference here is that while Drakengard makes the violence of its central conflicts more visceral and obvious, Panzer Dragoon makes it more complicated and, ultimately, nuanced. But to frame this as a criticism rather than an explanation accuses Drakengard of seeking nuance as a goal, and failing, and I just don’t think that’s true. Despite Panzer Dragoon Saga’s Empire being about as hazily defined as Drakengard’s, it manages to make them feel like a real entity, one staffed by human beings that believe in their cause and react to the phenomena of the world around them . It’s telling, I think, that when you shoot down imperial vessels in Panzer Dragoon Saga, their crew cry out, often saluting the empire with their last breaths, but Drakengard’s mind-controlled masses of soldiers and their abstract vessels often give no reaction at all. There’s rarely a sense that these soldiers are meaningfully people, or that the Empire is anything other than a mass of bodies for Caim to slaughter. Panzer Dragoon Saga articulates violence as something that affects the world in ways beyond how much blood is spilt when someone swings a sword, while Drakengard is only ever interested in the blood itself, as an expression of the freudian frustrations of the characters. The viscera is the point, and the viscera is what Drakengard ultimately is.
For all my sincere engagement with the game’s clear themes of taboo and familial conflict, there is a futility to it, because it’s so clear to me that first and foremost, the game is interested in the fun of transgressing these taboos within a largely accessible framework. The thrills of Drakengard are the thrills of watching a Saw movie, the audacity of them actually doing that…the enjoyment of a dead baby joke. This might all sound like an insult, but I promise it isn’t. A couple of years ago, I made a youtube video about edgy PS2 games, where I argued that these kinds of games with self-consciously edgy aesthetics are valuable for the straightforwardness of their rebellious attitudes. Drakengard’s closest bedfellows, to me, are not Panzer Dragoon or Ace Combat or even Dynasty Warriors, but Jak II: Renegade, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within…and Shadow the Hedgehog. Transgression for the sake of enjoying transgression might indeed be shallow, but it is also profoundly worthwhile, especially for young people chafing at the condescending and limited avenues they are offered to engage with the world. Hell, it’s why I was drawn to NieR, when I played that as a 14 year old - I wanted something weird and different, for the weirdness and the difference. And for all my criticisms, I cannot deny just how good Drakengard is at this simple appeal.
I feel a little like I’m engaging in some Sacred Cow butchery here, and to a certain extent that is a conscious thing. There’s so much received wisdom about Drakengard out there online that I do feel compelled to try to articulate what I think it is actually doing.in the final verdict, I ultimately like Drakengard a fair bit, and I do think it is worthwhile. But I don’t think it’s worthwhile because it is a wildly aberrant, abrasive work that challenges norms. I don’t think it has much to say about video games, and I don’t think it’s meant to be so bad it’s good. In fact, I think it is something that inshrines the norms it tackles in how fundamentally irreconcilable it views them. It is a straightforwardly effective bit of rebellion that we all need as teenagers, one that has a keen understanding of its target audience and their emotional needs. Games market themselves on offering illusions, of freedom and power, and Drakengard offers the illusion of rebellion against and excoriation of the status quo better than most any game I can imagine, and I think that is why it, ultimately, has become quite a popular game. It isn’t a surprise, the right kind of anger for a mass audience has always been popular. Never Mind the Bollocks, Its the Sex Pistols, for all that it declared itself oppositional to society’s norms, was ultimately extremely popular within them. It's loud, in your face, and guaranteed to get at least some kind of reaction out of an unsuspecting player. It is a dead baby joke, a loud, abrasive, screaming metal album played so loud that it pisses off your parents, an act of petulant, adolescent rebellion whose purpose never extends far beyond the rebellion itself. Show me someone who doesn’t see any appeal whatsoever in that, and I’ll show you someone who really needs to cut loose a little. But equally, show me someone who still thinks dead baby jokes are the height of comedy, and I’ll show you someone who needs to hear more jokes.

i really enjoyed you sharing your intern story, but i was also keenly aware while reading that it seems like that trajectory is only possible if you have enough money to jump at the opportunity. things like buying a plane ticket, potentially break and lease, and sign a new one with just a few weeks' notice, and then work minimum wage only a couple of days a week while there? do you have any advice for how you were able to make that financially feasible, or in your opinion is breaking into the industry only possible by having a ton of cash to burn on last minute and under-compensated internships? this is asked without judgement; i do really appreciate your insights, and am asking out of desire to carve this path for myself with limited resources. thank you!
(Note: this reply is regarding this post)
You're 100% right - the way that studios structure internship positions highly favor students that have the financial means to drop everything and move to California for a few months, for little to no compensation. The fact that they don't offer any form of housing assistance or travel stipend makes it incredibly difficult to take on an internship without already having savings ready to go.
I was very thankful and lucky that my parents had saved funds for my higher education, which is how I had money to do the internship, but I totally recognize how much of a privilege that is. I think the fault is on the studios for making these programs inaccessible, especially when it could be an experience with the potential to shape the course of an artist's career.
There are a couple things that could possibly help - the first is that internships already require you to be a student enrolled in college, and it's possible you could try asking your school for financial assistance for the internship. Some schools have special funds set aside for things like this and it's always worth to see if your school does.
The second would be that the pandemic vastly changed the way studios operate, with many of them now allowing full-time or hybrid remote employees. During the beginning of COVID, internships were done virtually, and perhaps it's still possible to ask if the studio is willing to accommodate a remote internship.
My last advice though, would be that being unable to participate in an internship is NOT the end of the world. Getting an internship in the animation industry is WAY harder than getting a job - the vast majority of artists I've worked with never had internships, and many of them transferred into animation from other disciplines like engineering or computer science. The way I got my first job also was not directly through my internship, it was actually through a Dreamworks showrunner discovering my artwork on Twitter and reaching out to me about a job. These days, social media has so much power to connect us to opportunities that would have been extremely hard to get in the past and I would definitely keep that in mind as you continue your journey! Wishing you all the best of luck.

I come here late to give my opinion on what Nicole Maines said in her book about the Supercorp fandom (go to Twitter for more info, but she basically gave her point of view of things as a queer actor on the show having expected things from the queer fans, confirmed we were being queerbaited while also blaming us for some actors getting fired). I appreciate her side of things and feel for her. But reading that I felt that A LOT was overlooked, especially the context of it all. So sit back if you care enough to read this and come with me as I go on a rant and we go down memory lane to give some context into what it was like to watch Supergirl live as a Supercorp fan.
The first season of Supergirl had its fair share of ships. People liked Kara/Cat, Kara/James, Kara/Win maybe anyone? I don't remember that one but I'm sure there were people out there who liked them. Some people even liked Alex/Kara (a conversation for another time). Kara/Cat shippers could also like Kara/James, because both ships had some strong foundations in the narrative, they were undeniably good ships, regardless of how you feel about age-difference relationships or straight relationships lol. There wasn't mostly an issue, except with the ones that liked Kara/Alex.
In between the first and second season of Supergirl it was announced that a main character would be gay. They didn't say who, though. Speculation began, of course. They did say that Maggie Sawyer was coming to the show but it was not confirmed that she was going to be a lesbian and even less whose love interest.
Then the second season premiered. And in the very first episode Kara Danvers meets Lena Luthor. Their scenes together were filled with sexual tension from the very beginning, look at their meeting scene without context and a bit of an open mind and most people will see their chemistry and think that maybe Kara was meeting her soulmate. And the first scene of Supergirl meeting Lena Luthor? It was already drawing a parallel between them and Lois/Clark, one of most iconic, recognizable and undeniable canon ships of all time. Drawing parallels between these two ships was the creators of the show's favorite pastime and it started from day one, before the ship had any fans because we hadn't met Lena just yet.
But in that episode we did meet her. And we fell in love fast. Because their interactions and the interest concept of Lena's character were good. Could it really be that Kara was the main gay character? Could it really be that they were going to give us an epic love story with Supergirl and a family member of her family's historically known enemy? Could they dare to make the famous superhero anything other than straight?
It wasn't just a delusion on our part at that time. It was a real possibility based on real facts. Kara had suddenly dropped the guy she spent the entire previous season chasing after. She got him and dumped him for no good reason (the writers didn't bother to give it a good excuse) and in the same episode she meets this woman, at the start of the season we were going to discover a main gay character.
These are all facts.
A few episodes later Maggie Sawyer makes her debut and it's clear that she's Alex's love interest from the first moment. Cool. It's not Kara but at least it's Alex (because, at the time, we know, WE KNOW, that they don't have two lesbian/queer women characters in the same show unless they're dating each other. How could we think that gay people will surround themselves with other gay people? silly us), that was the reaction: We still LOVED that it was Alex, because it still made sense. And it was difficult to find Sanvers fanfic without it having Supercorp in it because we were all the same people, of course most of us liked both ships.
Now, I obviously don't know her, but I seriously don't think that Chyler can say she felt overlooked by the fans that season. Alex's coming out scenes were some of the best we had seen in our entire lives up until that point, and we made that known. Not all of us might have been on board with Sanvers (some storyline choices could've been questionable) but with Alex? No one loved her more than the queer Supergirl fans. And in the meantime Supercorp kept getting screen time, their friendship progressing in a Clois kind of way that was beautiful to witness. While Maggie and Alex's relationship advanced pretty quickly from an "I'm not gay" to a rejection to a proper first kiss, Supercorp was building a bit more organically as Supergirl kept saving Lena's life, as Lena opened up only to Kara, trusting her all the while Kara was keeping this huge secret from her. We ate that shit up, of course we did.
After season two was over we got the news that Floriana Lima (Maggie) was going to leave the show. I remember Chyler saying that she wanted to do right by us and whoever came next was gonna stay. And I'm not faulting Chyler for what came next, at all. Chyler was and always will be one of the best things on Supergirl and she has always treated the fandom with the utmost respect and love. And I hope she only received the same treatment back (and I hate to know she got those letters from people threatening to kill themselves, but let's have a little compassion for those people and their mental health, I hope they're doing well).
So Maggie left. And while some fans were not coping well with that, most fans understood it was the actress' decision. That was fine. What wasn't fine was the decision the writers made by making the breakup about not wanting babies when they were about to get married. How on Earth (any Earth) a couple don't talk about that particular issue BEFORE deciding to get married? It was an easy way out. But okay, it's just a TV show, I don't write it, we can move on from that... In the same season, at the same time this whole discussion and breakup occurs, the very same person who wanted to have kids has a meet-cute with a SINGLE MOTHER, Sam. The story was full of promise, she had a kid already with whom Alex got along amazingly, there was great chemistry between all three of them, Sam also had a dark secret being basically her sister's most powerful enemy, their relationship was mostly well built throughout the entire season. But guess what? She wasn't her new love interest, and left at the end of it.
A lot of Supercorp fans LOVED AgentReign (Sam/Alex), by the way. A lot of Supercorp fans also loved ReignCorp (Sam/Lena) and a few even loved AgentCorp (Lena/Alex) and SuperReign (lol what was the name of this ship? I don't remember but Kara/Sam). And guess what? There wasn't a war between us. We were mostly the same people multishipping because it's fun and because these were interesting characters with interesting relationships created by the writers. We were inventing and wishing for stuff, but the foundations were laid for us, some (most) things were there and most of us were just screaming that we liked what we were being given and wanted more of that.
And that's why come season 4, some people were having a hard time accepting Dansen. Because we were mourning the loss of Sam and her relationship with Alex, the what ifs are always the worst, no matter the situation.  But most Supercorp fans embraced Kelly (and Azie, we love Azie and what we got to see of her relationship with Chyler, and Katie and Nicole), the vast majority of us ended up loving Dansen despite the writers not always doing a great job at writing their arcs. And it's awful that some fans treated her and other members of the cast horribly, but that was by far a small portion of the Supergirl fandom in general, and especially the Supercorp fandom. And, by the way, as a side note because racism was part of the problem for a minority of the fandom, A LOT of us in the Supercorp side of it are not white people from the US, A LOT of us are from other countries/races/cultures (that can be racist too of course, but the point is we don't know the races and motives of everyone behind a keyboard).
And that season most of us also embraced Nia because she was the first trans superhero, because of her queerness, because she was an awesome fun character, because she was relatable and geeky like most of us. We embraced her, her relationship with Kara and her relationship with Brainy. And we showed that by trending Nia related things, by adding Nia to our fanfics and fanarts. Nia was a Supercorp ally for most of us and we didn't exclude her from the art because we loved her as much as we love some of the other characters in the show.
Now, if Kara would have had, after the first season, one male love interest that was decent enough, we would have still love and wanted Supercorp, that's true (especially when it had been years of build-up) but most of us probably would have liked the pairing anyway, because we loved Kara Danvers and wanted her to be happy and to have the love she wanted at the beginning of the show (which she didn't get, by the way).
But the writers decided to give her, instead, another man who didn't treat her well. And I couldn't honestly tell you half of William's storyline because I couldn't care less. The creators of the show didn't make me care. Hell, I didn't even see Kara cared enough about that character. The writers should know their audience and should know that the audience needs moments to make them care about the characters, the writers have the power to make that happen. Many times I've seen a fandom hate a character one episode and love them by the next one, because sometimes all it takes is one good scene, or one good arc. William never had that. And now we have confirmation of what we knew all along, that maybe they were writing half-assed storylines for their love interests because they were too busy trying to figure out new ways to queerbait us. If they would have put a quarter of that effort into creating good love interests for Kara and/or Lena (but especially Kara), most of this conversation wouldn't still be happening 3 years later.
We embraced Andrea Rojas, we embraced her so much that we shipped her with Lena. Most of us weren't the blind Supercorp-or-nothing crazy fans a lot of people to this day make us out to be. When things were good, we mostly liked them. But please, please, let's be honest here, a lot of the time Supergirl was not a great-written show. And I get that those are Nicole's friends but a little objectivity, especially after all these years, would have come a long way.
These past few days I've read a couple of people saying Supercorp was the only good thing about the show. Those kinds of people were and still are a very very minority. A lot of us started the show before Supercorp existed and LOVED (still love) the Danvers sisters with all of our hearts. And the writers, at times, didn't know how to keep up with that relationship, the one that at first was the very center of the show, all that well either.
Most Supercorp fans didn't actually like that the 100th episode revolved all around Supercorp. 1) Because it was queerbaiting at its finest. 2) because it should've been about the Danvers sisters. Or at least about all Supergirl's most important relationships in equal measure. Yes, Lena was a big part of her, but ALEX EVEN MORE SO. The fandom didn't make that happen, we didn't fire any actor either. These were decisions made by the people who had the power to make anything in the show happen. If we would have had our way we all know what we would have done, and no, it definitely was not p**n (the most used AO3 tags for our ship speak for themselves).
I didn't see Nicole's last paragraph on the subject shared much. A lot of people didn't see that she acknowledged a small portion of the good the Supercorp fandom did.
Tumblr media
But by the time you get to it, you already have a bad taste in your mouth. Because it still reads as if she's talking about us all without a care that "the toxic fans" were just a loud minority. Not to say that the good guys weren't louder, because Supercorp is still what it is to this day because we're still loud. So why is there very little mention of that? The way we supported Nia's episode? The way we supported Kelly's?
And because we were having fun and we were loud about our love for two fictional characters, WE WERE ALSO RECEIVING THREATS from some toxic fans, hell, the day before yesterday some fans were receiving death threats like it's 2017. Everything she says the cast and crew were dealing with, the Supercorp fans were dealing with it as well, and more so because the toxic people felt validated by the choices the creators made. Validated by some writers on Twitter making it worse. Validated by some of the actors who were also mocking us. We were all called delusional, and that was the most chill thing you could be called.
I understand her point of view, and I imagine that was not a great first experience in that kind of set, and I would love to have the opportunity to talk to actors about this topic that fascinates me (relationship between fandoms and cast/crew). But context is important, to see other people's point of views is important when having these conversations. She felt her own community wasn't supporting her when most of us were and that didn't come across at all. Not even with her final words.
The fact is, they were hurt by a small part of their own fandom (which, by the way, they have no idea how old those toxic fans were. Not to say that adults are not toxic. But we, as the non-toxic adults, should also think of the demographic and react accordingly). And most of us, the queer Supercorp shippers, were also hurt by the toxic part of the fandom and by some of the people she's trying to defend. Let's be clear, there's not "mayyyybe," they were 100% wrong in queerbaiting the hell out of us from day one and mocking us for believing the bait. Make no mistake, most of this is a consequence of THAT.

behind the screen masterlist
you gulped as you looked at sungchan, his eyes were still wide as he looked back at you.
“did you follow me here?” sungchan shook his head erratically before finally looking into your eyes.
“i was invited here” he speaks, almost breaking eye contact immediately as you stepped back to let him into the room. once he was stood inside you closed the door, leaning your back against it. you watched him carefully before speaking again, voice shaking slightly.
“by merci?”
“yeah” he hadn’t said much and that terrified you more, you couldn’t know what sungchan was thinking in that moment, he looked as if he had seen a ghost “merci invited chan” your heart dropped again at the name “i’m guessing you’ve been merci this whole time?”
“and you’re chan?” he nodded and watched as you walked over to sit on the edge of the bed, you looked up at him “did you know about me?”
“i didn’t”
“you didn’t see any resemblance? my bedroom? my clothes? me?” your questions were baseless, you changed your sheets especially for the steams, you always done your own washing so he never would’ve seen your underwear and you never once showed your face. yet you didn’t expect out of the thousands of people who followed you on twitter that sungchan would be one of them, let alone someone you spoke to.
“i have never seen the bedsheets you stream with on your bed before”
“i change them” he nodded, standing awkwardly in the middle of the room “you don’t have to be awkward, you can sit down i think we need to talk about this” he nodded before he sat next to you on the edge of the bed, letting you sit a little further up the bed with your legs crossed before you looked at him.
you looked down at your hands as silence filled the room, there was a sense of dread around the two of you as you both came to terms with the situation you had gotten yourselves into. speaking to each other unknowingly was one thing but in the manner the two of you were, in such an intense and sexual way, it left you both unable to correlate any thoughts.
“look if this is too awkward or too much for you i can leave, you can block me i can find a new apartment to stay in for a while” his voice seemed frantic.
“you don’t have to do any of that” you sighed as you looked up at him “sungchan it’s okay, it’s just weird knowing you were chan this whole time”
“it’s weird for me too, i’ve watched merci for months i can’t explain how fucked up this is in my head that you’ve been her this whole time” you tilted your head to the side, questioning his words “not in a bad way, it’s just surprising” you nodded before sighing.
“did i at least help you get over your feelings for somi?” sungchan unintentionally let out a laugh at your question, narrowing his eyes at you.
“somi? i haven’t had feelings for somi for months, what makes you say that?”
“you said you needed to get over your feelings for someone” sungchan’s eyes widened at your words, he panicked for a moment as he remembers what he said. he was somewhat glad you never realised his feelings were for you, he found it almost humorous that he unintentionally used you to get rid of the feelings he already had lingering for you.
“you said the same thing, so who were yours for?
“sungchan” your voice lingered off a little, somewhat quieter than it was before. given the situation you were in, you knew there was a fair chance you two were never going to talk about this again and you’d both push it into the past and try to forget about it, so what would be so bad about being completely honest about everything now?
sungchans eyes watched you carefully as you leaned back against the headboard and played with your fingers, you tried to maintain eye contact as you spoke to him but it was difficult, no part of you knew how confessing your feelings to him would go, especially with the situation you were in now.
“i had feelings for you”
“what?”
“yeah, it was you” his reaction was unreadable as he processed your words “i knew nothing would come from it, you were already in a relationship by the time we became roommates and i also knew how bad of an idea because we lived together and i didn’t want to make things awkward but” you gestured to the room around you “i don’t think anything can come out that’s more surprising than this”
“y/n you’re so fucking dumb” he put his head in his hands and groaned, you couldn’t stop the slight pang in your heart that came as a consequence of his words. neither of you spoke for a few seconds before he lifted his head and looked at you “i had feelings for you, i have feelings for you”
“we used each other to get over each other “ you laughed a little as you said it out loud, unsure of how to adjust to the realisation “did you mean everything you said?” he looked at you, unsure of what you meant “i mean, did you mean everything you said to merci”
“i never lied to you, or to merci”
“do you feel any different now you’re here and you know it’s me?”
“it feels different because it’s you” he sighed before turning to face you properly “i knew i’d come here and see the pretty face i’ve been speaking to for weeks but now i know it’s you i don’t know how to feel. i still stand by everything i’ve said to you but it’s harder now i know it is you” you understood what he meant, it was different knowing who chan really was, but it didn’t change anything you had said to him over the past few weeks.
you almost hated yourself for thinking so crudely but you wanted him, every lust filled word he said to you has stuck with you. you had both came with the impression you’d end up having sex, so was it really all that bad to still want that? you didn’t think so. sungchan didn’t either. the man had dreamed about you countless times in the past, fantasising about you multiple times whilst his hand was wrapped around his cock. he wasn’t proud of the thoughts he had about you and merci was his escape from them, but now he knew you were merci his head was on fire.
it became noticeable to the both of you that the air in the room was changing, it became suffocating, need surrounded the two of you. both of you seemed hesitant to act on your feelings, but you knew one of you had to make the first move.
“you meant absolutely everything you said?” he nodded “even the other things?” the sexual things. sungchan sucked in a breath as he looked at you, eyes falling down the skin of your arms.
“i’ve been watching your streams for months, i wanted to fuck merci so bad but y/n i wanted you so much more fuck” his cursing caused your clit to throb “it’s ironic to think i got off to both the thought of you and merci when you’re the same person”
“you want me that bad?”
“so bad” there was a hint of desperation in his voice, you could tell he meant what he was saying.
“why don’t we save the important conversations for when we’re home, yeah? i booked out the room for the night and i wouldn’t want to waste it” it took sungchan a few moments to process your words, he didn’t move an inch until he was sure what you wanted, him.
he moved, his hands pressing into the pillow as your body moved down so your head could rest between them. he kept his eyes on yours as he looked down at you, only breaking the stare to lean closer to your lips. the first press of his lips to yours was gentle, it felt as if he was testing the waters to how you would respond to him.
you felt your body sink into the mattress as he kissed you, your lips responding to his for a brief moment before he pulled away. it only took a few seconds for him to kiss you again, this time joining your lips together in a deeper kiss. it didn’t take long for your hands to lace themselves behind his neck and pull him closer to you.
the kiss was intense, you could feel the yearning that was laced in it. both of you had seemingly waited ages to finally feel the other against you and the feeling of it didn’t disappoint from what you had been imagining for months. it was difficult for either of you to break the kiss, not wanting to leave eachother but you knew you had to eventually.
“did you bring condoms?”
“yeah” he breathed out.
“then please fuck me sungchan”
“god” he groaned, feeling your legs wrap around his waist and pull him directly against you. sungchan was sure he could feel the heat radiating off of you through your trousers, he wanted nothing more than to rip them open and stuff you full of his cock then and there. but he knew he had to be patient.
his fingers pushed under your shirt, slowly peeling the fabric off of your body before dropping it to the floor, he made quick work of pulling your bra down so he could access your tits. his lips wrapped around your nipple immediately, tongue swirling around the hardening bud as your fingers found his hair.
sungchan knew what he wanted as he heard you whined, his tongue running over your nipple as you arched your back up. your skin tasted sweet under his tongue, it made him want to taste more of you, sungchan wanted to lick up every inch of you and feel you melt against his tongue, he needed to savour your sweetest so he could remember it forever.
his lips left your skin as he lifted his head to look at you, his dark hair gently fell in front of his eyes as you watched him. sungchans fingers dug into the skin of your hips as he spoke to you, his words ran sparks through your body.
“i want to eat you out” you whimpered as he spoke.
“channie please, i can’t wait i need you to fuck me” he groaned as he lowered his head again, lips pressing against yours in an open mouthed kiss. his head span as he felt your tongue press against his, he only parted your lips when he wanted to speak again.
“please” he sounded desperate “just a little taste” he whined before kissing you again.
“just a little” you caved, hearing sungchan beg to eat you out made it impossible for you to deny him.
he broke the kiss to kneel up between your legs, he rid himself of his shirt before hooking his fingers under the waistband of your trousers. you let your eyes linger on his torso for a short while, his abs flexed as he leaned over your body to drop your trousers to the floor, arms flexing as he pressed his fingers over your panties to feel your heat. he hissed when he felt how wet you were, how you were already soaking through the material onto his hand. sungchan couldn’t put into words just how badly he craved to taste you on his tongue, the boy was desperate to feel your cunt melt against his tongue.
he leaned down, arms hooking under your thighs to stable yourself properly under him. his mouth watered as he pressed a kiss against the fabric of your panties, he groaned as he felt your slick against his tongue, he felt himself desperate to properly feel your cunt against him.
he pushes your underwear to the side, paying no mind to the way the fabric grazed his skin as he poked his tongue out to lick at your clit, he groaned the moment he felt you directly against his tongue, diving himself in deeper when he felt your hands pull at his hair and heard you whimper at the feeling.
sungchan wanted nothing more than to eat you out as if you were his last meal, he wanted every man who’s ever been near you to feel pathetic when you compare him to them, he wanted to be your every last thought because of how good he made you feel. he was determined about it.
“channie” your voice broke him as he wrapped his lips around your clit, you sounded so sweet, so vulnerable, he wanted to ruin every inch of you and hear more of your broken whines.
your fingers tightened their grip on his hair, his fingers dug deeper into the skin of your thighs as he kept his lips around your clit, tongue flicking over the bud as he savoured the flavour of you.
“you’re so sweet” he groaned when he released your clit, his fingers inched their way to your core as he pressed a wet, open mouthed kiss against the skin of your inner thigh.
his patience grew thin as he wrapped his fingers around your underwear and tore it off of you, the thin fabric ripping and being discarded onto the floor, his fingers then pushed into your sickened slit, he watched your facial expressions change as he circled the pads of them around your swollen clit. he watched as your lips parted and you whined out, desperate to feel more.
“i want you so bad” your voice was hoarse, weak as you began to beg for him “i need you”
“whatever you want, angel” he knelt up, leaning over your body to kiss you again whilst he pressed a finger into your sopping hole, letting it swallow and suck him in as he pushed it deeper. you whimpered against his lips as he added another finger, your cunt clenching around them as he curled them inside of you. everything about sungchan drove you crazy and all you could do is yearn for more.
“i really need to feel you” you broke the kiss to talk to him, he hummed at the way you moaned out your words, his cock throbbing in his jeans as you begged for him.
sungchan was quick to get off of the bed, fetching the condoms out of his pocket and throwing them onto the bed before ridding himself of his jeans and briefs. you found one of the condoms, opening the packet and discarding it onto the night stand as sungchan made his way between your legs, kneeling up between them and resting his cock against your stomach. you almost whimpered at the sight of it, red, swollen, leaking onto your skin, it felt heavy against you and even heavier in your hand as you rolled the condom onto him. he looked down at you, hand holding your cheek with his thumb running over your bottom lip.
“you’re so pretty” you nuzzled your face into his hand, squeezing your own around his cock as he kept eye contact with you, lips parted so he could let out a gasp at the feeling.
the moment felt intimate, too intimate to be something shared between a camgirl and a boy who watched her, far too intimate for two people who were meant to be roommates and nothing more.
pushing the thought out of your mind for the time being, you watched as sungchan pushed your legs a little further apart and replaced your hand that was wrapped around his cock with his own. the head of his cock pressed against your clit, he pushed it down your slit and put a slight bit of pressure against your entrance. you whimpered as you felt yourself begin to stretch and adapt around his size.
sungchan was bigger than anyone you’d been with before and he knew that from what you’d shared through merci, he knew you’d struggle to take him and sungchan couldn’t help but love that thought.
he kept his eyes on yours as he eased himself inside of you, silently reassuring you that it’s okay as his hand laced through yours. your lips parted in a silent moan as his cock stretched you out, your hand squeezed his as he pushed himself deeper into you.
“does it feel okay?” his voice was gentle as he spoke to you, his hips stilled as you clenched around him. you nodded at his question, swallowing before weakly talking back to him.
“you’re so big” your eyes watered as he pressed the rest of his cock inside of you, sungchan was almost overwhelmed at how well you’d take him and how tight your pussy was around him.
“i know baby, it’s okay” his thumb rubbed over the back of your hand as he stopped moving “i won't move until you’re ready” you nodded at him, weakly telling him that you needed him to move.
“please, i need you” sungchan dropped his hands to your thighs, his hips moving backwards before he gently thrusted forward, cock filling you up swiftly. you moaned as he continued his pace, being sure to go slow enough for you to be able to properly adjust to his size without overwhelming you.
he could tell you were enjoying it, he could see the way you had your fists clenched into the bedsheets and how your eyes shut, back arching into each of his thrusts. he sped up, being sure to push himself deeper into you, angling himself until he was sure his cock was pressing against your sweet spot. you moaned the same with you did on your streams yet you were louder, you fell apart even prettier around his cock than you ever did with your pathetic toys. sungchan believed he was on the way to becoming your newest toy and he loved the idea of that. wanting nothing more than to be the thing that gives you the most amount of pleasure possible.
you were falling apart at a rapid pace as he fucked you, he grabbed your thigh to lift your leg up, letting your ankle hand over his shoulder as he pushed deeper into you, hands wrapped around your thigh as he held his against his stomach. sungchan wanted to fuck you until you were a wreck and he was already half way there. when you opened your eyes you were met with a beautiful sight, his fingers digging into your thigh, his body glistening in a light coat of sweat and his eyes focused on the way your cunt took his cock, how your lips gripped him and pulled him back in each time he pulled out of you.
with the way you were reacting to him, sungchan lacked the self control to not cum the moment he was close and he was dreading it as the feeling crept up on him, he prayed you were as close to breaking as he was as he pushed his thumb against your clit. he focused on you as your squirmed and moaned louder, begging for him not to stop. his pace was smooth, he kept up with his thrusts, staying consistent each time he pushed into you. you were losing your sanity with each thrust he made into you.
“im so close channie”
“im right behind you angel” he groaned, leaning over you once more so he could kiss you. his hands balled into fist beside your head as he moaned against your lips, chasing both his and your own orgasm as he continued to fuck you. the moment he felt his high hit he dropped his hand back down to your clit, wanting to feel you squeezing him and finishing around him as he filled the condom with his cum.
it took the two of you a while to calm down from your highs, ending up with sungchan laying on his back and you with your head rested against his chest.
“sungchan” your lifted your head up to look down at him. he was pretty, too pretty. his hair a mess, his lips swollen, his cheeks flushed, you felt your heart skip as you admired him.
“what is it?” his voice was soft as he spoke back to you.
“we need to talk about everything” he shook his head and guided you back down to lay against him, his arms wrapping around you once again. you felt his lips press against your head as he hummed against you.
“we will, when we’re home tomorrow, let’s just have this for now” you listened to him, letting yourself drift off to the sound of his heartbeat and his gentle finger tips against your skin.
the next morning seemed to breeze by, there wasn’t much interaction between the two of you other than his fingers tracing patterns against your arm and your head against his chest, yet you had a time you had to check out by and as unwilling as you both were, you knew you had to leave and go back into the real world.
“sungchan?” he turned around before he could open the door so he could look at you.
“are you okay?” you nodded and took a step closer to him, your hands shaking a little as they wrapped around his arm.
“once we leave this room we have to go home and have a really serious conversation about all of this and i’m scared about how it will turn out” you took a deep breath as he began to respond.
“it’ll be okay, love” his hand sat over yours, thumb rubbing over the back of it “no matter how it ends up i won’t be letting go of you, even if that means we stay as just friends” you nodded and he smiled at you, beginning to turn around before you stopped him again, he looked down at you, slightly confused as your placed your hands on his shoulders and stood on your tiptoes. you leaned forward and kissed him, lips pressing against his softly as his arms immediately wrapped around your waist. he pulled your body against his, the kiss deepening quickly before he pulled away and smiled down at you, eyes flicking from your eyes to your lips as he kissed you again.
“lets go home” he dragged his hand from your waist to your hand to intertwine your fingers through his before he opened the door, letting you follow slowly at your own pace as his thumb ran across your hand again, silently telling you everything will be okay.

red therapy au
red therapy is the use of red smoke that catnap uses to subdue dogday, when he discovers something that makes him doubt the prototype's plans
Catnap considers Dogday the only friend he has of all the critters (the prototype is his god)
so instead of punishing him like he does with the others, he subjects him to red gas.
This makes Dogday unavailable for 4 days and in those 4 days he acts differently.
The first day he is simply fighting against the hallucinations and nightmares that he has due to the red gas, as well as trying to get his memories right.
The second day he only sleeps all day, it's difficult to make him wake up or stay awake, Catnap is too overprotective, when Dogday is in that state.
On the third day, he is half asleep, but acts different from his normal manner, being more aggressive towards the other critters calling them heretics, as well as being overly loyal to the prototype. in that state, only catnap and the prototype speak to him (although the prototype is more like a whisper)
on the fourth day, he feels tired and paranoid, he has visions of his dead friends, they usually warn him that catnap is dangerous and that he should not trust the prototype, in that state dogday he is sad and does not want to listen to anyone, Catnap usually surrounds him with his body without having to speak other than just purring near him, which calms him down a lot.
On the fifth day, Dogday forgets whatever caused him to have the therapy and continues with his normal life, believing the lie that Catnap told him as well as accepting the false memories that he was told happened and like the other Critters, out of fear, they do not deny him the lies, dogday more easily believes false memories.
If a critter dies, Catnap will tell dogday that they escaped and abandoned him.
catnap will take the eepy dogday from the third day to see his friends being punished, because he knows that he will not say anything against his decisions and will not listen to "his friends" just as his friends will feel bad seeing that this dogday is not It's going to help them.
Hence, Dogday on the fourth day has nightmares about the deaths of his friends and how he couldn't save them.
the remaining critters are afraid of catnap but also of dogday from the third day and they avoid him at all costs
The critters know when Dogday is unavailable for 4 days or is in that sleeping state, they know that he discovered something he shouldn't have
Dogday, unlike the other critters, has more freedom to investigate and walk in all playcare, due to his role as leader he has to check all the places that are dangerous or that may be safe for the group, which means that he can see and discover things which can make him doubt the prototype, this makes catnap give him the therapy.

What your opinion on all this talk of leaving the hp/marauder fandom because it directly/indirectly supports JKR? Do you have any desire to leave?
Well my opinion is that I can understand it completely if people choose to do so, but personally I have no desire to leave nor intention of leaving. I understand that it might bother individual people but I'm not asking anyone to look at this blog; in fact the reason I started to use this sideblog is so I could keep everything HP-related away from people who choose not to see it. While I think HP's cultural relevance today is such that it's impossible to avoid entirely, I do empathise with people who'd rather not see it. If someone wished to block me for continuing to blog about HP, I think that might be the healthiest option for everyone involved.
Anyway, I understand why this is happening and I think it's important to discuss. But that's the point. It's important to discuss, not stick our fingers in our ears.
I think this is a great post about it! Here are my own (long-winded) thoughts:
Personally I fundamentally disagree with the idea that we should stop reading and discussing works written by bad people. I don't believe that's a constructive or healthy way to engage with literature. If nobody's left to discuss something as culturally relevant as HP (or LotR, or whatever) critically, then what is the point of literature in the first place? Is it pure entertainment and therefore easily discarded? Ftr I'm also firmly against banning (even socially 'banning') literature of ANY sort, for ANY reason. "You shouldn't read X because it's morally wrong" is to me ultimately a conservative belief.
Anyway: I find it pretty obvious that JKR said 'if you like my books you agree with me' PURPOSEFULLY to cause this kind of a reaction, because she knew it would cause her detractors to become hyperfocused on pointing fingers at each other and thought policing each other over a kids book rather than focusing on what's actually going on. I don't think we should be playing into it, and I don't think even JKR believes it herself-- I think it was deliberate. And tbh from what I can see it has had the exact effect she intended.
The other thing I'll say is that (and tbf I can't say for sure) but I suspect that the online HP fandom might be exaggerating its own importance a little bit. Tbh I think that even if the online (and more liberal) fandom disappeared overnight there would still be tens of thousands of kids (the target audience, after all) discovering and reading Harry Potter for themselves across the globe. Scores of parents and aunts and grandparents who know nothing about JKR buying those books for the kids in their family. And that's not counting the people who actually do agree with JKR. Yes fandom disappearing might have some small impact, but tbh I think it would be all but insignificant. It would be much more, like infinitely more, materially significant for people in fandom to donate time and/or money to trans organisations in their own countries. ((I also think what would be somewhat helpful is for fandom to take responsibility in encouraging people not to watch the HBO series. The success of the series is imo more contingent on online opinion than the books.))
There are also millions of people still using twitter, instagram, and amazon, despite the very real material damage caused by Musk, Zuckerberg, and Bezos, and that's a MUCH more direct cause-and-effect than simply talking about Harry Potter because using those platforms LITERALLY lines the pockets of those individuals. I will say that if you're on twitter telling people they should stop talking about Harry Potter I simply will not take you seriously loll 😂
I guess there is probably some amount of people who discovered HP through, idk, Marauders tiktok and decided to read the series, but how significant is this number? It's incredibly difficult to grow up in most countries around the world and not come across Harry Potter in some way. For good or ill I do think HP is en route to becoming a children's classic. If tumblr goes down and my blog and all the blogs I interact with on here disappear, I don't think this would change.
On the other hand, simply for posterity I do think there's some value in continuing to discuss it-- all of it, including the reality of who the author is, the cultural relevance of HP, the text itself and what this all means given its significance in our culture. And it's important to discuss it critically, honestly, and constructively. It's remarkably easy with HP to avoid giving money to the author, which is something I believe to be worthwhile, so tbh I can't bring myself to agree with 'it would be better if we stopped talking about it' in a general sense. Personally I don't think the only people left discussing it should be right wing maniacs lol-- again, for posterity if nothing else.
Also I think there's a slightly worrying tendency on the liberal 'left' (which is typically the majority in most fandom spaces) to shut down conversation and discussion in general, particularly if those conversations are uncomfortable. You see thought-terminating clichés frequently deployed in such spaces and I think it's just not helpful. Seeing posts from supposed leftists trying to convince people that it's morally wrong to even THINK about Harry Potter is pretty wild to me, tbh. I think that for a while now there's been much more of a focus among the left on idealism over materialism, to the point where material reality is totally ignored in favour of, essentially, trying to get everyone to think the correct thoughts. To me this just isn't a productive or intellectually responsible approach.
What is the material benefit of all of us simply shutting up about Harry Potter forever? How does this actually help anyone beyond yourself and your own conscience? To me it seems like ultimately a performative and virtue signalling action that is pretty meaningless when you're not doing anything else, and is particularly meaningless when you're not applying this to literally anything else in your life. Fandom isn't activism, but by extension NOT-fandom also isn't activism haha. Personally I dislike Marvel films and think they're barely-disguised propaganda for the American military-industrial complex, but I don't think it's evil for people to write their Bucky/Steve fanfiction or whatever lmao. And I certainly don't think it's wrong to discuss Marvel films, the opposite in fact, I think they should be critically discussed.
So, basically, I think it's perfectly understandable that people would want to leave the fandom. But ultimately I think that's an action you're taking for yourself, and I don't think there's much to be gained from refusing to discuss things deemed 'morally wrong.' I think to a certain extent it's natural and probably healthy to feel some guilt about it all, but also perhaps it's worth questioning why we feel such extreme guilt about this, which is really just people talking to each other about books, and not about the 486948736 other much more unambiguously destructive things we do with our time and money on a daily basis.
As long as we're willing to discuss this topic honestly and constructively, to be conscious and empathetic towards others, and to refrain from spending any money on HP-related products, I don't think it's wrong to remain in the fandom tbh. To deny HP's impact on today's literary landscape would be, imo, dishonest, so therefore somebody has to discuss it. And I'd much rather there be a variety of opinions within that discussion.

🦈 Emmm well that would be difficult, what's the surprise? Arlong is a fisherman who thinks he's better than people (Are you sure he's better?).
🦈 You must have had something really special about you for him to pay attention to you.
🦈 Maybe even at first he only took you as a new human pet.
🦈 It would have taken a long time for him to start thinking about you differently.
🦈 I think it would start with something as small as addressing you by name. Like just calling you a person.
🦈 Then a few small touches. A hand on your back as he pushes you forward. (Why are you walking so slowly?)
🦈 Then there will be some shared food or mission. Which, of course, was planned by Arlong himself.
🦈 With time, he will give you hints that he is interested in you. He sees something more in you, don't waste it. He won't give you a second chance.
🦈 If you turn out to be a racist fisherman, his interest will drop to zero or even negative.
🦈 Dating started in secret. He needs to keep his sanity, especially since he shows all the time how he hates people. That's why he won't show up anywhere with you.
🦈 After a really long time he will take you as his own. He further presents you as his personal toy. (You are only his.)
🦈 Everyone knows what's really going on. Arlong can't hide his relationship too much.
🦈 The crew knew this because of the bite marks on you. His scent on your skin, the looks he was throwing you. He acted like a silly teenager in love.
🦈 People discovered this through his behavior toward you.
🦈 Now you no longer have your own room, you sleep in bed with him (he can't sleep without you). What are your things? Now they are his things, what's his is yours, what's yours is his.
🦈 This will be difficult, but you will manage together.
🐟 Jinbe 🐟
Tumblr media
Twitter / X : @KUYUEN1
🐟 I think it may have started with the fact that you were in the Navy. An aide to some Admiral, come on you didn't even want to be in the Navy. Your father persuaded you, he was a sailor himself and would have liked it to continue, you agreed because you felt sorry for him.
🐟 At one of the Watashka meetings you would meet him.
🐟 He was a daredevil. all these people were like that.
🐟 But he was different, maybe it was the fault of his fish genes? You didn't know that, there was just something different about him
🐟 With subsequent meetings you learned more about him, he was the captain of the Sun Pirates. Wow!
🐟 You were always interested in pirates. They had such a wonderful life, no one made them do anything they didn't want to do. They lived the way they wanted and where they wanted, they did anything they wanted. You longed for such a life.
🐟 Well, going back, how did you meet our dear fisherman? Simple. On the beach!
🐟 So at the next meeting of the warlords, you ran away in the middle. And so no one saw that you were gone. You went to a nearby beach.
🐟 There you sat by the water watching the little turtles that went into the water. The little lucky ones were allowed to live as they wished.
🐟 Then you met Jinbe, he also broke off from a meeting. He was tired and wanted to go swimming, and somehow your acquaintance began. From a conversation about turtles.
🐟 In subsequent meetings you talked more. (You always left at the end to talk about everything and nothing).
🐟 Tortoise turned out to be a shy and kind fisherman. You fell in love with him quickly. (You didn't know he had you too) He often gave you shells or took you to the beach and swam with you (If you don't know how to do it, don't worry, he'll teach you)
🐟 Many conversations and meetings further you could honestly admit that you fell in love with this shark. He was simply idel.
🐟 Then when he was locked up in prison your meetings became very limited, he was a prisoner to this fisherman. He had fewer privileges than the rest.
🐟 But hey! You managed to meet.
🐟 When the day came, Luffy went to rescue his brother Ace. And you finally found out about Jinbe's feelings for you.
🐟 He even shouted out his feelings for you and kidnapped you. Well, you got your better life with your beloved fisherman.
🐟 He treats you like a queen. Even better. Everywhere you go he is there, Such a big turnip of him.

☀ I'm telling you 99% you are a former slave.
☀ Probably he rescued you from slavery (As did many other slaves). Because of your critical condition, he decided to escort you home himself. (You know sailing the ship and escorting you to the door of the house to be sure you got home safely)
☀ He watched over you while you slept and recovered. He couldn't do otherwise, you were so small and he was afraid for you.
☀ When you woke up he was gone, no one was there. You were terrified, you thought you had been sold to no one you knew. You got up checked that you were dressed and left the cabin.
☀ The fishermen were scared. Not because they were fishermen, no. They were pirates, you heard a lot about what pirates do. Fear won out and you ran.
☀ You climbed to the stork's nest, then to the beam. What a comedy it was.
☀ Tiger came in to take you down and greet you, but your brain thought otherwise the closer it got the more it retreated until it was over.
☀ Looking down, you were too high for the fall to end well, maybe slipping off the sail? Maybe? You were too afraid.
☀ You stepped back a millimeter, that unlucky millimeter. you fell. But our hero Tiger caught you and pulled you in, holding you in his arms. He came down with you and before he could put you down you bit him and ran away.
☀ The crew could not laugh (Except our princess Arlonga).
☀ You hid in the barrel and were not going to leave, Tiger tried many times to talk to you.
☀ It took him two weeks before I began to open up to him. explained to you what he was doing. After a while, you also began to trust his crew.
☀ You learned over the next week that you had a lot in common, you somehow started spending time together.
☀ You don't even know how or when you became a couple. It just somehow came out
☀ Everyone knew about it, as if you didn't know? This fisherman couldn't help but show you affection. Whether it was carrying you everywhere, giving you shells or there pretty pebbles he found. He just had to show you how much he loved you.
☀ And yes, you can swim on it, yes, you can play with its hair. You can much more than the crew.
☀ You like to take advantage of that.

apps we use as a system!!!
1) Picrew!
Picrew is an avatar maker with literally thousands upon thousands of different makers!! It has a website (picrew.me) OR an app on google play!!
Pros: It's made completely by users, so it has tons of different art styles!! It's also just really fun ww
Cons: The app can be a bit laggy, and the website has lots of ads for hentai games :(
2) Simply Plural!
It's an app designed for systems!!! SOOO easy to use and the accessible fonts and interface settings are really nice! We use it not just to track fronts but also to increase communication and honestly just allow ourselves to be ourselves.
Pros: Easy interface, you can set it to send notifications to track fronts, no alter limit which is great for polyfrag systems, the chat feature is awesome, and the new custom fields allow us to put in a lot more info
Cons: It supports endos and has misinformation which can be harmful for newly discovered systems trying to learn more about their disorder
3) Mininote
Mininote is a very coquette scrapbook/journaling app! It's really cute and easy to use, plus you can have multiple journals.
Pros: most features are free, with most of the paid ones being just cosmetic. You can customize the journals however you want and even have different passwords on them for different alters, and it lets you have lots of journals. Very simple UI.
Cons: The font might be a bit difficult for some systems to read and it tends to prioritize aesthetics over functionality. It also wasn't designed for systems, so it might have a limit on how many journals one can have. The translation from the app's native language (Chinese) is very patchy and poorly done, so it can be a little difficult to navigate.
4) Twinote
Twinote is very popular among systems! It's basically a Twitter simulator, but the feed and all the user profiles are one account. It still functions mostly the same as Twitter, just only with what you post... like your own personal Twitter!
Pros: Fun to use! It lets you customize EVERYTHING, from the number of followers you have to the likes on any post. Unlimited users, too! It also helps us with our communication and lets us send each other images, whereas the SP chat doesn't.
Cons: Nothing too major. It doesn't give notifications, so you have to manually check for that sort of thing. It's also not made for systems and instead for fun, so the UI is built for singlets.
5) Mindly
Mindly is a mind-mapping and organization tool that we use to map out innerworld!
Pros: Very simple! It's literally just adding and labeling little bubbles! It also allows for layers, which is amazing for polyfrag systems!
Cons: It was built for, you guessed it, singlets. Mind-mapping is, from what I gathered, similar to using a planner, so using the app to LITERALLY map your mind isn't its main purpose. It can also take a while.
6) Matterport
Matterport isa sort of 3d modeling app designed to make schematics of houses and stuff like that. We use it to visually map out our innerworld since we have a hard time visualizing it due to our NVLD!
Pros: It's great for systems trying to create a headspace or who, like us, struggle to maintain it! It's highly customizable and free!
Cons: It was designed for architects and interior designers, making it a bit more difficult to learn. It's 3d modeling app, which can always be hard, and also makes it a bit of a bulky app, which can run down your battery and lag. I believe there's also a lot of paid features, but I may be wrong.

HGSN 31-3
Chapter (Japanese)
(Please hit the green thumbs up at the end of the Japanese chapter to show support)
Rough translation by me
P1
(sfx: cicada noise)
Yoshiki: Ashizukadou Cave...
P2
Hikaru: Serows....
Yoshiki: 'Hikaru'
(Sign:
Ashizukadou Cave
P3
In the past, this was the location where a large number of leg bones were discovered. This was said to be related to the cultural practice of dismemberment before burial which was practiced throughout the area centered around Kibougayama. In Ashidori, there is a legend that the "mountain god" will open a hole here, and the festival to close that hole survives to this day as the "Houko Festival".)
Hikaru: This "mountain god"...is me? Ah no, It's "Nounuki-sama", huh?
Yoshiki: Probably...Guess this is how they interpreted it in Ashidori
Hikaru: Nounuki-sama...In the end, it never really existed, did it?
Hikaru: They sacrificed heads, split the village, buried the bodies...
Hikaru: And people were sacrificed to close the holes too.
Hikaru: But in the end, the impurities didn't go away, and life must have still been difficult, right?
Yoshiki: Maybe it was because life was so difficult that there was meaning in reducing the number of mouths to feed...
P4
Yoshiki: At any rate, the hole is real
Yoshiki: So I think there was real meaning behind this "hole-patching"
Hikaru: After they switched to dolls, it probably lost that meaning though. At that time, I was probably already on the mountain gathering impurities.
Yoshiki: Ashidori, Kubitachi, Udekari, Darumasute, and the abandoned villages. On this "human-shaped land", I'm sure...
Yoshiki: that as they started to notice the holes, they all tried every trick they could think of
(sfx: running water)
P5
Yoshiki: Even if they worshipped Nounuki-sama, life continued to be cruel
Yoshiki: Even if they closed a hole, without closing the source, it would be sure to open again
Yoshiki: As they struggled, invented a solution, and sacrificed a huge number of people
Yoshiki: As if they were grasping for just a little more time before the end, that's how they've lived on this land 'til now
P6
(sfx: running water)
Hikaru: And the result of all that...
Hikaru: ...is this
(sfx: drip)
P7-P8
P9
Yoshiki: ....
Hikaru: ...This hole can only be closed from the other side, right?
Hikaru: And, if a human went to the other side, they'd basically die...
Hikaru: But y'know...
P10
Hikaru: I'd be fine on the other side
Hikaru: 'cause I'm not a human

T/N:
The Yen Press simulpub has caught up to the latest Japanese chapter, and chapter 31 is actually free to read for a short period of time! (link)
That said, I'm not sure whether this is a one time only deal, or if they have some plan on handling the simulpub of future chapter parts in a similar fashion.
Depending on how things go, I may stop posting further translations of the main story chapters. I'll probably announce it in a separate post if I decide to retire.

Chaeri as the 8th and youngest member of BTS.
CHAERI'S MASTERLIST
Check CHAERI'S LOVE LIFE'S TIMELINE to discover when this event takes place
Web article
Tumblr media
August, 2023
Anyone who loves and follow KPOP, which has become a global phenomenon, cannot ignore the increasingly persistent rumors about a possible breakup between Chaeri, the only female member of BTS, and Hongjoong, the leader of ATEEZ. The two, long considered one of the most iconic couples in the music industry, seem to have taken separate paths: no more sightings together, absence of interactions on social media, and now a new very personal song by Hongjoong that has raised many suspicions.
Signs of a possible crisis are not lacking. Recently, Chaeri ended her contract as the choreographer of ATEEZ, a role in which she was considered the creative mind behind many of their breathtaking choreographies. A choice that many interpret as a signal of the young artist's desire to distance herself not only professionally but also personally. Even though Chaeri explained in a recent live broadcast that the collaboration with ATEEZ was always intended to be temporary and that she now wishes to focus on new projects with girl groups, fans remain puzzled and find it hard to fully believe her. The timing of the contract's end and the alleged distancing between her and Hongjoong appears to many as too strong a signal to be ignored.
As if that were not enough, Hongjoong has released a new song that seems to be an open confession, and perhaps an implicit accusation. The lyrics of the song, titled “Why Do You Love?”, enigmatically address someone who seems to have “replaced” or “forgotten” him. With intense phrases like “You can’t be with anyone else, only me” fans are hypothesizing that the ATEEZ leader is expressing his pain over the possible end of his relationship with Chaeri.
In the most dramatic lines of the song, Hongjoong sings: “You said you couldn’t imagine yourself with anyone else but me… I hope this is just a misunderstanding.” Words that leave no doubt about the artist's suffering and confusion, as if he is struggling to accept the reality of a lost love that he perhaps believed was to last.
Fans on social media have been very active about the matter, with many wondering if there really is another love in Chaeri's life, if the song is a desperate call from Hongjoong to win her back, or if the two things are not related at all.
For now, neither of them has made any official statements. The uncertainty about the truth behind these signals is splitting the fandom: some hope for a return to the spotlight for the couple, others ardently wish that their relationship is really over.
If confirmed, the end of Chaeri and Hongjoong's relationship would leave a bitter taste in the mouths of many fans, who considered them to be THE couple of K-pop, among the first to expose themselves so much and so naturally to the public. Are these just rumors or are they really going through a difficult time? While awaiting an answer, we advise fans, for those who haven't already done so, to listen to “Why Do You Love?” by Hongjoong.
Not only could the song offer some more clues about his emotions, but it is also an incredibly well-produced track. The song has already won the hearts of many listeners for the artistic skill with which Hongjoong has voiced his (alleged) feelings.

Twitter / X after the article:
💭 If Chaeri really started a relationship with someone else, I am sorry for Hongjoong. He doesn't deserve this
💭 Chaeri always seems too focused on herself, and now Hongjoong loses out. It's a shame
💭 Hongjoong, atinys are here to support you, whatever is going on. No one should see you like this.
💭 I hope Hongjoong is not hurting too much, honestly don't know what he found in her. I hope he finds someone who really appreciates him!
💭 I've listened to 'Why Do You Love?' a thousand times, and there are details that suggest it's really dedicated to her…
💭 Ok, maybe Hongjoong is really suffering and has dedicated an entire song to her, but am I the only one annoyed by this? I mean, it's already enough to have had their relationship thrown in our faces all this time, and now we fans are also forced to listen to music written for her?
💭 No matter what happens in his personal life, Hongjoong is an extraordinary artist and his music is always powerful.
💭 He so beautiful even without makeup and completely au naturel, if Chaeri doesn't want him I will volunteer very gladly.
💭 I don't understand all the hate for Chaeri. Being a female idol is hard enough; criticizing her for something we don't know is unfair
💭 They are human, and couples break up all the time on a daily basis. If they did, I don't understand why we should care so much about it. It's their own business
💭 Leave Chaeri alone.
💭 As a BTS fan for years, I knew that the relationship with him for Chaeri would only be a problem. He clearly never lived up to her standards and if she realized this now, all the better!!!
💭 This song makes me realize more and more that I am probably a child of divorce 🥺 Chaejoong, you were THE couple.
