look I don't even hate all cc math! (I actually really like using area models for 2x2+ multiplication) but I do think a lot of the curricula used by districts (or at least the way they're implemented) over emphasize conceptual understanding over procedural fluency to the detriment of both.

like. these standards are literally straight from the cc itself but in practice they're basically afterthoughts

the ultimate goal is for students to be able a) have basic facts memorized and b) perform computations using the standard algorithm!!

and any competent teacher should be able to explain WHY the standard algorithm works AND why it's an efficient method to use, especially because the cc emphasizes understanding place value/base ten so heavily. give me a set of base 10 manipulatives and I can do it in under 5 minutes!!!!

anyway introducing the standard algorithm a wholeass year after the topic is initially taught probably exacerbates the problem because I would bet money that the 4th grade teacher teaching partial products & area models is not thinking "how is this explicitly laying the groundwork for my students understanding the conceptual basis of the standard algorithm for multiplication and ensuring that when they begin using it they understand the context for it"

fun fact about me! I have hyperadrenergic Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (hPOTS). this means I am prone to fainting when I change positions or when I feel a strong surge of emotion, positive or negative. for me, laughing is my worst non-postural trigger.

this is a clip from playing lethal company with friends a few months ago. you can hear the eerie silence of presyncope at 0:19, and the sound at 0:23 is my face hitting the keyboard lmao. I played this for my mother and she literally pissed herself laughing and DEMANDED I show every single person I know (including my doctors, who thought it was funny to see and surprisingly helpful, especially for being audio only).
