Azula in Fandom
I really did love Azula. She's one of the most fascinating characters in ATLA: brilliant, terrifying, powerful, tragic, and deeply flawed. I loved that the show let her be complicated without ever pretending she wasn’t dangerous.
And I still love her, but honestly, some parts of the fandom have made it harder. Watching people erase her harm, excuse everything she did, or attack others for acknowledging her complexity doesn’t make her look better, it just makes real conversations about her impossible. Azula was compelling because she was broken, cruel, vulnerable, and human all at once.
Flattening her into a untouchable girlboss or a misunderstood victim that just wanted the best doesn't honor that story, it kinda cheapens it.
I’m still rooting for her character, and I always will be. But if I'm honest, it feels like my love for her has faded a little, not because of who she is, but because of how some of her fans behave (NOT ALL FANS, by no means all fans, but a loud enough *few* who excuse abuse, downplay harm, and treat disagreements about her online like I just killed their puppy in front of their eyes).
It's just kinda sad seeing something I cared about get twisted into something uglier ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
#azula critical#atla#atla fandom critical#avatar the last airbender#low-key didn't wanna tag this#considering the loud few I mentioned earlier#and the fact that I have shit to do besides writing for funsies on Tumblr now that I've procrastinated on my AP studying this long#but fuck it we ball#speaking of AP tho if anyone knows any study resources for AP Chem lmk pls#AND if anyone knows anything for multivariable calculus PLEASE suggest stuff#I hate both of those classes with a burning passion#but anyway I digress#nobody show up and and be mean to me because of this post#or I'll post another anti-bullying draft I have saved#this is a threat#to that rando who said that I didn't get bullied enough as a child I hope you stub your pinkie toe on every corner you turn for a decade#which is what I would say if I was a bully#but I am not so I wish you great prosperity in your work and for you one day find peace that isn't reliant upon online harrassment#<3#remember when we had anti-bullying assemblies in school? some of you took “don't be a monster” personally and decided it was a challenge#wow I think the tags are longer than the post but oh well its cheaper than going to therapy again

Interior Department Announces New Guidance to Honor and Elevate Hawaiian Language

"In commemoration of Mahina ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, or Hawaiian Language Month, and in recognition of its unique relationship with the Native Hawaiian Community, the Department of the Interior today announced new guidance on the use of the Hawaiian language.
A comprehensive new Departmental Manual chapter underscores the Department’s commitment to further integrating Indigenous Knowledge and cultural practices into conservation stewardship.
“Prioritizing the preservation of the Hawaiian language and culture and elevating Indigenous Knowledge is central to the Biden-Harris administration's work to meet the unique needs of the Native Hawaiian Community,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “As we deploy historic resources to Hawaiʻi from President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the Interior Department is committed to ensuring our internal policies and communications use accurate language and data."
Department bureaus and offices that engage in communication with the Native Hawaiian Community or produce documentation addressing places, resources, actions or interests in Hawaiʻi will use the new guidance on ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) for various identifications and references, including flora and fauna, cultural sites, geographic place names, and government units within the state. The guidance recognizes the evolving nature of ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi and acknowledges the absence of a single authoritative source. While the Hawaiian Dictionary (Pukui & Elbert 2003) is designated as the baseline standard for non-geographic words and place names, Department bureaus and offices are encouraged to consult other standard works, as well as the Board on Geographic Names database.
Developed collaboratively and informed by ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi practitioners, instructors and advocates, the new guidance emerged from virtual consultation sessions and public comment in 2023 with the Native Hawaiian Community.
The new guidance aligns with the Biden-Harris administration’s commitment to strengthening relationships with the Native Hawaiian Community through efforts such as the Kapapahuliau Climate Resilience Program and Hawaiian Forest Bird Keystone Initiative. During her trip to Hawaiʻi in June, Secretary Haaland emphasized recognizing and including Indigenous Knowledge, promoting co-stewardship, protecting sacred sites, and recommitting to meaningful and robust consultation with the Native Hawaiian Community."
-via US Department of the Interior press release, February 1, 2024
--
Note: I'm an editor so I have no idea whether this comes off like as big a deal as it potentially is. But it is potentially going to establish and massively accelerate the adoption of correctly written Native Hawaiian language, as determined by Native Hawaiians.
Basically US government communications, documentations, and "style guides" (sets of rules to follow about how to write/format/publish something, etc.) can be incredibly influential, especially for topics where there isn't much other official guidance. This rule means that all government documents that mention Hawai'i, places in Hawai'i, Hawaiian plants and animals, etc. will have to be written the way Native Hawaiians say it should be written, and the correct way of writing Hawaiian conveys a lot more information about how the words are pronounced, too, which could spread correct pronunciations more widely.
It also means that, as far as the US government is concerned, this is The Correct Way to Write the Hawaiian Language. Which, as an editor who just read the guidance document, is super important. That's because you need the 'okina (' in words) and kahakō in order to tell apart sizeable sets of different words, because Hawaiian uses so many fewer consonants, they need more of other types of different sounds.
And the US government official policy on how to write Hawaiian is exactly what editors, publishers, newspapers, and magazines are going to look at, sooner or later, because it's what style guides are looking at. Style guides are the official various sets of rules that books/publications follow; they're also incredibly detailed - the one used for almost all book publishing, for example, the Chicago Manual of Style (CMoS), is over a thousand pages long.
One of the things that CMoS does is tell you the basic rules of and what specialist further sources they think you should use for writing different languages. They have a whole chapter dedicated to this. It's not that impressive on non-European languages yet, but we're due for a new edition (the 18th) of CMoS in the next oh two to four years, probably? Actually numbering wise they'd be due for one this year, except presumably they would've announced it by now if that was the case.
I'm expecting one of the biggest revisions to the 18th edition to add much more comprehensive guidance on non-Western languages. Considering how far we've come since 2017, when the last one was released, I'll be judging the shit out of them if they do otherwise. (And CMoS actually keep with the times decently enough.)
Which means, as long as there's at least a year or two for these new rules/spellings/orthographies to establish themselves before the next edition comes out, it's likely that just about every (legit) publisher will start using the new rules/spellings/orthographies.
And of course, it would expand much further from there.

Ify using his DM minute to save Barsimmeon, summon more APS, successfully launch his car to land on the airborne White House, and unquestionably win the NSBU kill count competition by killing 10% of the world’s population (it’s okay they were all white supremacist super soldiers) managed to be simultaneously the exact brand of insanity that giving a PC full power would entail, while also all being satisfactory, story relevant, and tonally appropriate and I think Ify keeps proving he should DM a season in The future
More on Ify’s skills as a storyteller in the tags⬇️
#ify nwadiwe#dimension 20#never stop blowing up#it was all so narratively satisfying#bc we introduce this sudden loss by playing out Ify’s insane idea to pour the APS on Barsimmeon#and it fails resulting in a pretty emotionally loaded low point and loss of a resource Brennan didn’t plan for#and then and then and then#he’s made Keeper of NSBU in Barsimmeons place to carry on his legacy#and in the next scene he succeeds and becomes DM for a minute#and rectifies his mistake without breaking the worlds logic and undoing the failures narrative purposes#and he brings the fucking ongoing PC competition full circle too#and it’s just#Ify#Ify the story teller you are#NSBU#nsbu spoilers

I swear the rest of my work for this semester of education is going to be done purely out of spite. I am going to write sentences like I'm writing my novel just to get up to word count goals. This class was feeling pointless and directed mainly at multi-subject majors before I decided to drop the edu load and now that feeling has doubled. None of this will be useful. But. My gpa
#Starlight Does Uni#No seriously making vocab posters isn't really going to work long term in the college math classroom I don't know what to tell you#I don't think they'd even be really useful in the AP Calc classroom that was my original plan tbh#Aside from the first few days of concept learning#Because honestly if you're having to rely long-term on a poster in order to be able to do derivation and integration#You're not going to do well on the AP exam#And that's like. the point of the class#I get scaffolding is good and everything. Like I understand that#But like. For the AP classroom. There's a very particular goal that they're trying to reach.#And too much long-term scaffolding of the basics will actually hinder rather than help.#I honestly feel like my AP Calc class didn't do as well as they could have#Because my teacher didn't set limits on what we were allowed to use on exams until the month before the big one#So I was the only one holding myself to exam pacing (finishing in the exam period) and doing my best to not rely on the formula sheet#And I was one of the only people to get a 5#Like absolutely there should be resources for ELLs#But I don't think this is something that would work quite like they're saying it should at the 12th grade level idk#Because what's being suggested is essentially that formula sheet on the walls.#And. No.

i made a wicked sdv spreadsheet to calculate resources i need. i made it cause every winter i focus on gathering resources and building/redesigning the farm.
anyways i’m gonna brag about it bc im proud i love spreadsheets. i kiss spreadsheets on the mouth.
(also i’m 100% aware something like this but better certainly already exists but i wanted to make my own and it was fun lol)
details of my ⭐️work⭐️ under the cut
basic explanation
purpose is to allow a player to input things they want to make/buy (craftables/buildings/tool upgrades) and have it output how many resources they will need
it allows the player to input:
the desired items (and how many of each)
the number that they already own
their current inventory (resources and money)
it uses all this information to calculate resources and money needed to fulfill all those requirements.
it also allows the user to choose "priority" items. it will output a table of required resources for:
prioritized desired items
total desired items
this doesn't include all craftables, buildings, or resources, but ones I felt were the most important and likely to be something you'd want to calculate (like l'm not gonna build 20 slime hutches or 30 crystalariums ya know)
(it also has a sheet with a much more detailed breakdown for hardcore gamers (excessively detailed for no reason nerds (like me)))
here’s an example w some basic explanation n’ some screenshots hehe
p.s.
the reason i didn’t include the file as a template for others is i’m terrified of it having mistakes i haven’t caught yet, making me look like a FOOL❗️

It's international worker's day and I have a 900+ word blog post wip about what it's been like watching job seekers and HR professionals adopt generative AI in this process. It's depressing and horrifying but at this point not surprising because this stuff is some of the most painful and boring business writing out there. It's still exhausting. It's hard for me to write about because I'd rather spend my time finishing one of my fics or starting a new fanvid project. But this is something I'm seeing every day and have to think about every day because I have to interact with people who are, in their eyes, trying to use these tools in good-faith. There's also the tactics people employ to 'educate/encourage' job seekers into learning and using these tools to give themselves an edge over other people who don't adopt them. It's exhausting. One day, one day I really want to finally write a series of informational resources about how to engage interview process from a place of strength (written with the neurodivergent/introverted in mind, 'cos where I'm from and I know others have had similar struggles). And what it takes to write and rewrite your resume (without ChatGPT).
It's not something I can do today or tomorrow because I'm fucking burnt out. But I've learned so much in the last few years. Things I wish I had known when I was job hunting before the pandemic, and I'd like to share this knowledge at some point because it's helped me so much. I want others to have the same kind of help. But first I'm managing my energy and time and trying not to go insane. (Writing fic and working on my art projects and coloring books is very soothing and a lifeboat for me right now.)
#blogdora#i'd also rather be talking about monkey man which has my head positively spinning#and also planet of the apes. but for different reasons lol#i actually like business writing for internal resources because I'm good at it and hate when other people do it shittily or not at all#i'm very tired#textpost

How do you get into or interested in the Medical Field?
Start in High School (or Middle School): In Middle School, you can join/make clubs like Future Health Professionals (formerly known as Health Occupations Students Of America ) or start the club. You can join/make clubs like a Biology club, Medical Awareness Club, Anatomy Club, Science Club, Red Cross, etc. You can also do extracurriculars to get interested in the medical field like volunteering at hospitals, internships at hospitals, joining summer programs at hospitals, and getting first aid/CPR certification. Lastly, you can take classes in high school like biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, AP psychology, and (if CollegeBoard makes the class) AP anatomy and physiology.
2. Research the medical field: It is very understandable if you cannot join clubs after school. There can be various reasons why you cannot participate like if you have a job, your parents cannot pick you up, you don't know anybody in the club, or the people in the club aren't nice. Instead, you can conduct your own research on the medical field jobs that are available. Research what you must do, the education you need, salary, etc. With AI rising, research of these jobs is important since they can grow or shrink based on how advanced AI is getting (especially in the computer science field). However, in the medical field context, AI can help medical professionals with diagnosing, analyzing X-rays, analyzing test results, and more. Nowadays there are doctors online, so AI can help provide information, vitals, symptoms, etc.
3. Skills and Qualities: In the medical field (depending on the job you desire) you will be working with each other as a team. For instance, if you are working in the emergency room, you will need to work with nurses to put medicine in the IV and other doctors if you need help with a case or diagnosing an illness/condition. You will need kindness and empathy because there will be patients who are in pain and suffering. Some may not have enough money to pay or are homeless.
4. Diversity in Jobs: There are numerous jobs you can pick. From doctors to nurse practitioners to biomedical engineering to being part of the lab, testing viruses. For instance in biomedical engineering, you are not only doing things in the medical field but in the biology field, computer science field, and more. Some jobs like being a doctor take a longer time than being a nurse. It will definitely be hard to be in school for a long time, but think about the reward which is helping people have a better quality of life and live better. You can also get a big salary (around 90-120,000 dollars). But there are challenges (depending on the job you pick) like seeing your patients suffer and not be alive, working 12-hour shifts, working almost every day, and working in a busy environment.
5. Challenges: There will be challenges from Medical School to the workplace. For instance, many students stay up late studying, have a side job or internship, or are trying to get a good grade in their class/MCAT. The best way to try to avoid it or lessen it is by time managing. By using a calendar, block off your free time and busy time. For instance, 1pm Friday is lunch, and 4pm Saturday is your internship. There will also be Financial issues as well. You will need to get a scholarship and if you cannot that's okay. Try to see if you qualify for financial aid using FAFSA or try getting a grant. If you do take a loan, there are also loan forgiveness programs as well. In the time you are in your workplace as a doctor/medical professional, there are ethical concerns involving patients. For instance, a patient's medical privacy and not talking about it with anyone unless that medical professional is working with you, or a patient wanting you to not resuscitate them If you resuscitate them, they could be angry, hurt, sad, and sue you.
Thank you for reading! Please like, and reblog if you liked this post or are interested in the medical field!
Please comment if you are going into the medical field, and tips for people interested in the medical field if you are already in the medical field!

the school district i went to high school in is currently in hella drama bc they’re trying to detrack math up until 7th grade and all of the AP students, alumni that went to ivy leagues and white parents are shitting their pants bc they “don’t want school to be dumbed down” aka they don’t want themselves/their kids to stop feeling special and have to be in classes with dumb brown kids* i’m sure . anyways so many of them are like “i believe in equity but—“ so you don’t . also they’re like if you do this people are gonna send their kids to private school!! like ok good riddance
#*PEOPLE THEY SEE THAT WAY IN CASE THAT WASNT CLEAR#if you are in ap and think that you’re special for it. went to an ivy league and think that you got their on your ‘own merit’.#or can afford to send your kids to private school you opinion means NOTHINGGGG to me#like you can just tell how much they buy into merit based thinking and think that they’re uniquely smart#and not that if some of the kids they think are ‘dumb’ could do just as well if not better than them in school if they had their resources#and background#coming as a fucking nerd ap student#who was usually the only brown kid in class like you just have to accept that you’re not that special#otherwise you start to believe that you ‘deserve’ what you have . and inversely that other people don’t . even though that’s the inverse#part that’s not said out loud
