Let's talk about the clock keepers boundary!
(warning: spoilers until chapter 124!!)
I've had some guess on where they could be from so let's look at what we have in the manga for now. I will keep things on surface level for the most part but it's just some things I noticed!
The first mention of the town is in chapter 111, where we finally have a view on their boundary.

A lot of fans already guessed from their clothes that they were not from Japan, this panel definitely confirms it and even points more precizely to a European country, mostly Western Europe. And also a country where Winter with snow exist.

It's also not an English speaking country, since Akane cannot understand the language and we know he has english classes at school.
Now there are several things we can look at to have more clues!
First, the architecture.

This type of house is called Timbered framed houses. It’s important to note that the roofs on those houses are really really sharp here. Which means theywere built for snow, so it can slide off the roofs more easily. The trees are also pines, something that can be found in a lot of Europe. (wood was needed to be able to create houses made of wood/with visible Framework( Little note: I know Italy was a guess for a lot of person because of the link to Pinocchio, but Italy main material for houses is stone not wood. And it is also not known for its winter.)
Here we can also see bricks which is something more associated to countries like Germany, Belgium or the Nertherlands, we don't have the colors so we can't guess from which minerals it was made for now.
But we have even more informations when we look at chapter 124!

The bridge and tower may be inspired by a fortified city, something that you could find A LOT in Western Europe during the middle age, not a lot of cities still have their entire walls but you can still see it if you go into old medieval towns. We can also see something that looks like a Belfry on several panels. Towers used mostly to indicate each passing hour of the day (may be a campanile or a bell tower (the difference is wether it's linked to religion or not basically)

Second! Let's do a little bit of clock making history!
I won't go into details, but there are some countries to point for this. England, The Netherlands and Germany. We already took out England before and we can easily erase Nertherlands from the list with the next step (my favorite one).
The food! I already had my suspicions confirmed with this bonus art from volume 22.

First of all, they have tea which is not something that was in Europe before the XVII century. But let's look at the sweets they have here.

Chocolates which look close to Belgian chocolate ( I say Belgian but other countries' chocolate is pretty close to it) , Christstollen Cake, and Spiztbuden.

We have even more to look at with the new chapter! And they confirm that it's indeed a stollen cake.

With all these foods it's now pretty obvious which area the clock keepers are inspired from.
Stollen cakes are German cakes, ginger cookies are from Germany too. I will also add that there is a chance the crescent moon cookies are VanilleKipferl. We have another panel showing Sausages and bread. Only the Almond is something not typical from Germany but which clearly was all over Western Europe with trades.

Their city already looked like the 'perfect christmas city' you can see in movies, inspired by German culture. And they also mention Mulled Wine which is THE beverage to take in any chritmas market in Europe.

Chritmas markets are inspired and coming from Germany first, but I wanna point something more.
My main guess was, Nuremberg, the city where the ancestor of the pocket watch was created, the Nuremberg Egg. It's also a Fortified city and it has forests around it. It's also known for its Ginger cookies!

So Germany would be a great pic, but the more I think about it the more I can also see the link to another region: Alsace.
Alsace is a region from France right now BUT it's a mixt of german and french culture (I will not make a history lesson but it is a place that always switched between France and Germany basically, now it's French).
All the food mentionned before are also made in the Alsace region!
It's situated in the Vosges, a chain of mountains known to have a lot of forets of pines and which is known to have villages like this:

Which were also the main inspirations for movies like Howl's moving castle for example. You can see the similarities between the artchitectures

The first ever Chritmas Market was in Strasbourg, the capital of Alsace, when it was German and it spread accross Europe after.
I will now look at something I usually don't do because I exclude Aus from canon but it's just a funny thing to point out.

This au shows a snow town inspired by ginger bread houses. I just find it funny because Aoi is shown as a baker, with bread (which are not baguette I think, it's way larger here) but with some croissant on her table (disclaimer: Croissant are not french at first, this form here is, but it's from Austria otherwise) And Kako clearly has something similar to a Wine bottle in his hands. This au is the only one featuring them, was given with their volumes and the vibes are really similar to their boundary.

I would say no matter what it's definitely closer to German culture but I wanted to point out this region which is known for it's Christmas season and its typical houses.
I will mostly say that it's an inspiration from this region of Europe, I don't know if a real country is the reference for it since we don't even know where tbhk takes place, but it's always funny to look at those things :DD
Little bonus:
In a more messy note, the clothes. I put them at the end because besides their hats, I had no idea how to describe it, since it seems pretty typical of what people could wear in winter.

I did the research in the other way, to look for German and Alsacian clothing to see if it match and it kinda does but I don't think it's speficific to this region. The girls wear classic white Charlotte and big clothes with layers for Winter.
The clock keepers clothes are different, it looks like a mixt of Japanese and western European clothing (especially from england).

Their main outfits for Akane and Kako really just look like a typical waistcoast/costume you can find in the XIXth century in Europe and Mirai's seems more inspired by a mixt of a Kimono with several layers(she also has sandals and frills) and a coat? The little knots Kako and Akane have on their coats look like something inspired from Mizuhiki knots too (I actually saw a costume with those exact same knots in a museum but I didn't take a picture rip)

So I would say they probably changed slowly their attire when they arrived in Japan, we don't know since how many times they are here, but we know that what is happening in the deeper place of the boundary is linked to memories previous to their arrival. According to their origin I think we can say that it's pretty sure they arrived after the Meiji/during the Meiji Era in Japan (1868/1912), since it's a this time Japan mostly imported Western culture (for clothing here, the first contact was before this. And note: it was mostly rich people who dressed like this). And If we look at some others dates like the things they are eating, used to have or even their clothes, I would say it's more probably the Meiji Era and not in the XVs.
Another note is that their clocks have the numbers written in japanese on it (in the og version but it maye just be so it's readable for the japanese readers? idk if it's a choice or not).
I haven't searched much on their clothes but it was still something I wanted to note here ^^

Something I really appreciate about TDP's worldbuilding is the way it gives enough detail to reasonably connect some pieces, while also leaving plenty of space to play. I feel like the example in show that I come back to most often are the Earthblood elves in S4 (and a bit in S5).
For example:
Given that the Uncharted Forest seems to be where the majority of Earthblood elves live, they likely use the forest as an inherent form of defense. They are also much further east into Xadia compared to Moonshadow and Sunfire elves. Therefore, it makes sense they're less overtly militaristic compared to the other two (cloaked villages and assassins vs weaponry, strong military presence integrated into day-to-day interactions and laws) groups of elves.
The fact that the Uncharted Forest is uncharted indicates less emphasis on written works (unlike Sunfire elves with the Great Bookery). This likely means that oral tradition and storytelling is how their knowledge is passed down and recorded.
The riders of the Drakewood would have little reason to ride drakes unless they were 1) hunting, 2) trading, or both. Their affinity for nets, chases, and ensnaring, as well as having to feed the drakes (who would likely be omnivores or carnivore leaning) means a lot of meat is passing through their hands. They also seem to hunt more than other elves we see (Moonshadows foraging and carrying moonberry juice > hunting while on the road). This emphasis on hunting for food for the Drakeriders, with meat then likely being traded to allies, possibly reflects why Earthblood elves we see are more willing to use (and abuse) animals (the Drakeriders) and subsequently why Terry is maybe more okay, overall, with dark magic. Terry clearly came from a different village, but we can see a consistent thread of how they treat and frame nature between them, making N'than the only true exception.
Being so far into Xadia likely protects them from the more imminent threat of dark mages that western elves have to deal with, at least culturally/in theory. The Drakeriders, at least, are "known for viciously protecting their turf," using N'than as a cultural exception of bonding with outsiders and being willing to. While other Earthblood elves might be friendlier, Terry being willing to leave before or after meeting Claudia is likely more odd; this isn't true for just Earthblood elves, though, as it seems inter-community travel isn't common for any group of elf, furthering their collectivist leaning isolationist tendencies ("they always told me outsiders were dangerous, but—").
Lastly, Terry mentions that there a lot of synonyms for cinnamon in traditional Earthblood language(s), indicating that—if not in general, then at least for his regional dialect—there is a lot of emphasis on food and cooking.
And idk. I just think it's all neat, and makes me wonder what Earthblood elf lives/communities are like for those outside the Drakewood, and if they used to be more dependent on Rex Igneous in the past before he started (seemingly) really withdrawing from the wider world on a more consistent basis.

so this line of thought was partially inspired by a literature class where we had to read ortega y gasset, and while he’s infuriating in many aspects, one thing that stuck with me is the line of thought that there’s unity between artistic expression across medium and current thought—basically, a tie between aesthetics and philosophical movements and zeitgeist of the time
and arcane is a series rich with visuals, and while at first glance piltover and zaun fall neatly into a “british steampunk vs cyber/biopunk,” many people have pointed out the art nouveau and art deco inspirations
so firstly let’s talk about art deco:

I come with a different kind of work that I do (analysis and art direction) about one of my favorite pieces of art to ever be created.
What does Arcane tell us with its visual storytelling and art direction that ENHANCES the story? A LOT actually. And as many works of art, it takes inspiration from real life. So, Art Nouveau and Art Déco as seen through Piltover and Zaun.
First of all, it's important to note that both of these art movements originated in France, Art Nouveu during the Belle Époque and Art Déco during and after WWI. A few decades apart and IT'S IMPORTANT. Fortiche is a french animation studio so OF COURSE it fits like a glove.

Art Nouveau came first during latter 1800s kind of like a protest or reaction against fine arts and Academic art which seemed elitist to some (sound familiar?). It wanted to infuse art with more freedom, creativity and vitality. Hence the name: "new art".
Also to mix artisanal work and more mundane expressions with art. That's why you can see every day things in this style. AN had its origins in the Arts & Crafts movement, but was also influenced by Asian styles, hence the long and decorative lines.

Why's this important for Arcane? Well, because (disclaimer) old lore said that the Undercity (with a strong art nouveau style) used to be older until an earthquake created the Fissures and made the separation between Piltover more prominent. They used to be one city.

I'm no expert on old League lore and we don't know many details about current one but it still fits thematically with what happened irl. Art Nouveau was always a rebellious movement and believed in bringing the arts to every day people. Just like Zaun is artistic everywhere.

So what makes Art Nouveau (and hence Zaun) easy to recognize? Organic and fluid lines, ASYMMETRY, mix of different and modern materials like iron, glass, ceramic. But the most important imo is that it's the mix of different cultures. Remember P&Z are a hotpot of cultures too.

Now then, Art Déco came later but as every movement, it's a response. During WWI (1914-1918) art became meaningless (in Europe) cuz when you're at war, what use is it? AD became a style that could bring purpose and worth to art again.

In 1925, the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris presented a new "modern style" that would show PROGRESS and technology advancements to demonstrate that despite the war, there was smth to look forward to. "The future is BRIGHT!"

It took off. And even though it was named Art Déco way later, we can see how art can influence public perception. AD was most popular in the USA (no surprises) and where we can see it shining brighter is in architecture.

Art Déco and Piltover can be distinguished by geometric lines, SYMMETRY, sharp and clean designs, and an elegant showcase of artistic choices. That's why everything in Piltover is gilded and carefully curated. It represents exactly that: PROGRESS after war.

So then we have these 2 art styles and 2 cities that seem completely opposite. But they actually complement each other. What one has, the other doesn't and viceversa. This is shown EVERYWHERE in Arcane. Character designs, environment, props, and even the tech they use.

I'm not sure if this was intentional, but even Arcane's style kind of looks like it took inspiration from painters from that time period. Obviously Alphonse Mucha (art nouveau) is easy to recognize but maybe Tamara De Lempicka (art deco) not so much.

So we have these two sister cities inspired by real life styles because all art is political. Zaun is older and community focused, while Piltover's newer and innovation focused. Piltover's SYMMETRY vs Zaun's ASYMMETRY and how you can read EVERYTHING through these lenses.

From character arcs, to alliances and betrayals, to how the narrative evolves and changes and show when and WHY events happen. You could even predict what would happen from reading the place where it was going to happen. It parallels everything.

But despite the differences, there is a bridge between the two cities and the story starts right there. Just like both Art Nouveau and Art Déco originated from the same place, France, where you can see both styles around the city coexisting. Bonus pic Piltover Montepellier

So, I've noticed a few things about Sir Pentious' blimp and how it's built.

Its main window is all circular, and if you look at how it's structured, it resembles a flower. Specifically, a window like this is often seen in churches, and they're called "rose windows"

Then, the windows on the side: it's like they're made of stained glass. And, what do you know? They're also found in churches!

And finally, the ship has a pointy extreme on its frontal area. It actually looks like a spire, aka the highest architectural element in a church.

So basically, this blimp contains elements that evoke the place where everyday people come to confess their sins and become better people and be able to eventually ascend to Heaven.
Sounds familiar?

Notably, a certain Sinner, who happens to resemble the Biblical representation of sin and evil (the snake), became a martyr and ascended to Heaven by using this machine of destruction to save his friends with no guarantee he'd be able to survive such an action.

Such an act of self sacrifice to help beloved ones is seen as the ultimate form of love and virtue, and it fully explains the brilliance and plot reasons behind his blimp's sacral architecture.

I was just reminded that the art collective Forensic Architecture exists and once again I’m disgusted.
For those of you who don’t know, it’s a collective of various artists who play at forensic science, conduct “forensic investigations”, and then make art exhibits of their “results”. Their reports and exhibits will make statements such as “the evidence shows that X is linked to Y” but the statistical output that they share will show something like a 5% confidence in the match.
That's right. They make art exhibits of their "investigations".
You want to talk about fandomizing tragedy? Making “forensic investigations” into art exhibits is the bougiest version I can think of, and it's only to serve an echelon of people who enjoy that kind of stuff. If any of the people in this art collective had a background in forensic science they would have taken ethics courses that would tell them how horrid putting on an art exhibit like this actually is. You don't honor the victims by putting on an art show for the rich and powerful to gasp and faint over so that you can fundraise for your next show.
Their founder has even stated that they’re not in forensics but “counter-forensics” and "counter-investigation". They eschew the practices and norms of the scientific community for telling their own version of investigative “truth”. They’ve even gone so far as to quote post-truth philosophies in their work and the controversial Nietzsche quote about there being no facts, only interpretations. Both are dangerous philosophies to hold in forensic science as it presents the evidence as subjective rather than objective. This is why they're an art collective and not a forensic science research group as they purport, they're rejecting objective scientific outcome for subjective interpretation.
You can go to the group's website and they have profiles on all of their team members. Almost every person is labeled as a "researcher", but once you click on their profile it quickly tells you that they're an artist, designer, activist, or some combination of the three. No mention of any scientific background whatsoever. That indicates their ability to actual conduct forensic science research is not great as they don't have any training or education on the methods involved. In fact, their entire program and personnel are out of an arts college with no science programs or faculty outside of anthropology.
That's weird, right?
A group that supposedly made a new discipline of forensic science, according to them, has no members with actual backgrounds in forensic science or scientific disciplines relating to it?
None of the team member profiles detail any scientific background that would be relevant to forensics outside of a few people with engineering and computer science degrees. Neither of the aforementioned disciplines typically train you in forensic practices anyway unless you take certain courses. Because these profiles are public you can go and checked LinkedIn profiles and find the CVs for each member as well. Guess what? No forensic science or relevant scientific backgrounds listed there as well.
But for some reason this art collective has received funding from governments and NGOs for "creating" a new discipline of forensic science. They're a "trusted" source for forensic investigations. That's worrying. That's terrifying.
I'm a forensic scientist and to make an objective field based upon methodology and empirically supported practice into one that is subjective and throws out the empirical aspects is terrifying. Everyone should have klaxons going off in their head whenever they see Forensic Architecture's name appear in a publication. I've reviewed a few of their "investigations" and they are rife with bad practice, manipulation, and misinformation. In fact, it appears that they present their work in art exhibits more than they testify to it in court due to their methods being questionable and their intent being not to help the investigation but to be a "counter-investigation" that can be judged by the court of public opinion. What do I mean by this? In many of their investigations the collective does not actively have personnel at the scene. Meaning they are not getting first hand physical evidence and measurements. Now, it's not always possible to be there personally and as such you rely upon crime scene techs, investigators, and other personnel to collect this stuff. Typically if you're a consultant or outside firm you are getting the evidence after it has been collected for analysis. You want the physical evidence in your hands as much as possible so that you can analyze it properly. Sometimes you have to request going to the scene yourself to get the measurements and evidence you need. The worst type of evidence to receive is honestly digital images of the scene as you are now having to analyze something a general investigator, who likely does not have specialized training, took a picture of.
In situations where you cannot have the physical evidence for analysis and you are left with only photographs then a forensic expert should be tempering their responses and conclusions. You cannot confidently come to conclusions based simply on looking at photos. This is something that is hammered home repeatedly in forensic programs and professionals.
In the case of warzone crime scene analysis, as FA typically does, they are, typically, not collecting evidence first hand from the scene, nor are they receiving evidence secondarily from actual trained investigators (when they are there first hand they also rely excessively upon expensive technology instead of best practices). They rely upon third party photos and satellite imagery to do their analysis.
Time and time again, forensic experts who rely solely upon digital photos and media to make their analysis get ripped apart by a good lawyer. Being confident in conclusions based upon photographs is the easiest way to lose your credibility. But again, the art collective playing forensic scientist primarily puts their work in art exhibits where they are not scrutinized by experts. Hell, I don't think I've ever seen them present at one of our professional conferences nationally or internationally (I would love to be a fly on the wall when that happens).
And finally, if this was an actual credible scientific group that produced credible investigations and had created a brand new field with methodology that stood to scrutiny there would be publications in the forensic journals detailing this. Especially from the "creator" of the field Eyal Weizman.
Guess what there isn't?
But in the end all they’re actually doing is crime scene reconstruction from people who want to cosplay as forensic scientists.

thinking about how the overall openness of the tower is emphasised. it's the excess of unwanted, hollow space and it gives you the creeps just looking at it. it makes you feel small, and it's intended. it makes you feel exposed, which is also intended. empty space is a luxury; you can afford to have all this space unoccupied and then some. there's also the manga which talks about the (interior of the castle) space as some place no one has lived in for years. it's too clean. and it's the perfect stage: if you create a place to be empty in the way you want it to be, you get to pick what happens, what enters, and what exits.

in the most recent patreon exclusive bonus episode of the very good podcast "if books could kill" michael hobbes has a very long tangent about a separate book he read for research (manhood in the making by david d gilmore) which is like, an anthropological study in what manhood means in various cultures across the world, and I Need This Book So Bad. i crave anthropological analysis of socially constructed gender roles in non-western cultures. but i must be patient. i found this book on a swedish bookstore but at the cost of too much money for a single book, and for a much more agreeable price on a norwegian bookstore - but they only ship to norway. in two months i will return. surely i can wait to months. i shall be so good and so patient

It's kind of annoying to see some depict Annabeth as not having/being able to have relationships, especially friendships, outside of Percy or them having a connection to him as well in some way. I'm not saying that she can't be paired with people who are also friends with Percy, I'm mainly talking about it from this perspective---if Percy and Rachel can be friends with one another without connecting back to Annabeth, the she can have the same. Like, sometimes whenever I read fics that mention Annabeth having a relationship with Connor, there always seems to be a mention of Percy in some way (either Connor being dropped for him or being used as a way to make him jealous), but that's long since stopped when it comes to Rachel being added (which is good because my girl was fighting for her life in this fandom). Not even just Connor, but I would like to see more of Annabeth's life highlighted outside of Percy and sometimes even outside of the big hero quest that she goes on. I want to see more of her interactions with Grover, Silena, the Stolls, Clarisse, etc. And this isn't any hate or shade to Percy, because I love him, but he's given more depth at times (when done right because fanon!Percy can be...) than Annabeth, even though they both are complex characters.
