"I am not her, I am here."
Loci.
So in this universe, "locus" are in fact sentient. Or at least some are. They may have the ability to possess people or influence them, and seem primarily motivated by hunger and absorption.
So far we have:
Episode 3, the garden that absorbed the doctor who Definitely Didn't Murder His Wife. Plus a spectral woman or voice.
Episode 8, the service station referred to as "hungry architecture" where we also hear the similar phrase, "You are here." and the man from the case was half-eaten by its demon people.
Episode 11, the dug up graveyard beside the cliff or even the ocean depths there (possibly).
Episode 21, the Millenium Exhibition and the Dome constructed to house it in London (possibly).
Episode 25, The Hungry Man Grill, once again very on the nose with the themes of hunger and consumption.
Episode 7 & 30, the Hilltop Centre with its various shops and businesses, including the Charity Shop.
Episode 29, The Lock Museum (possibly).
Episode 32, the angry building/area, which is strongly implied to be Mann Island, Liverpool.
And possibly The Magnus Institute and the OIAR headquarters itself.
Any I'm missing? Please chime in!

Some possible sources of inspiration for Meliora design
It is known that when creating Meliora, Tobias Forge was inspired by the movie "Metropolis" and the art deco style of the 1920-30s. Here I want to share my findings of some borrowed elements in the third era.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Palace of the Soviets was a project to construct a political convention center in Moscow on the site of the demolished Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. The project was never realized. Zbigniew Bielak wrote in his blog: "Check out the rough concept sketches leading up to this apotheosis of Soviet esprit". Meliora is probably referring to the USSR as a failed utopia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The building beneath the lustful megalomaniac resembles Boston Avenue United Methodist Church (1929).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This element is taken from the old RKO building (usually known as the General Electric Building) (1929-31). The theme of electricity is given a lot of attention in Meliora.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The lanterns in the hands are made in the style of the Helsinki Central Railway Station (1907) lamps. Papa Emeritus is compared to Lucifer the Light-bringer, and at the same time he is the bearer of the idea of enlightenment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another unrealized building, a concept by visionary artist Hugh Ferriss, can be seen in the City's urban landscape from the music video. Hugh Ferriss was an American architect and illustrator who created many images of futuristic New York in the 1920s, he's also the author of the book "The Metropolis of Tomorrow".
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This building is the actual Odeon Cinema in Glasgow. It was built in 1934 and was originally owned by the American Paramount movie studio. A prime example of mid-1930s architectural modernism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The prototype of the statue of the lady with the lightning bolt in her hands that crowned the spire in the music videos is the "Miss Electra" statue from the Alabama Power building in Bristol. It was built in 1925 in the Art Deco style.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cover of "From the Pinnacle to the Pit" is painted from Nick Gaetano's "Romantic Manifesto." It is a 2006 painting inspired by Ayn Rand's book "Atlas Shrugged".

exchange of roses, teaser (jujutsu academy)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
host club! jjk x fem!reader x ohshc
gojo satoru is the head of jujutsu academy's elite high school host club with his friends: geto suguru, nanami kento, itadori sukuna, shoko ieiri, haibara yu, and of course, their princess manager. what happens when they go up against another elite host club on an exchange event with different schools? let's find out!
a/n: haven't planned out if it's a series or collection of one shots, might do both; an au within an au would be fun. let me know if you have any ideas
international jujutsu technology and science academy is one of the world's largest elite private schools, having many campuses around the world. their founding campus is in tokyo, japan. their primary educational directions focuses on the development of technology and sciences. they cater from pre-k to high school (+ college prep). one of the most popular clubs is the high school's host club, where they get to entertain students with too much time on their hands
gojo satoru.
the founder of the said club is gojo satoru, head of the gojo clan who oversees gojo co, one of the oldest construction companies in the world. they focus on architecture specifically traditional japanese architecture. due to the modernizing of the world, they focused on implementing modern taste to the architecture to also maintain competitive in the industry. one of their main projects is upkeeping of the tokyo campus.
geto suguru.
the spokesman/vice president, geto suguru. he is part of the brains of the host club along with kento. the heir of the geto corporations that started their organization due to biochemistry long ago. earlier generations of his family had a massive breakthrough with their research which allowed them to catapult to the top. suguru is currently leading and overseeing the company's subgroup, uzumaki, which is helping the advancement of merging bioengineering within the company.
nanami kento.
the actual brains of the host club, nanami kento. he runs the numbers and makes sure that everything is running well with their princess manager. kento's family mainly function in the banking industry within the financial services but dabble in the investment industry. he still questions as to why he spends his free time (and exerting a lot of effort) with the host club.
itadori sukuna.
just a member/bodyguard of the host club (because he's a giant so he's intimidating), itadori sukuna. the last entering member (satoru was really just curious about sukuna and invited him with the group, ended up being wowed by his host skills). his family is a line of top chefs, selling cookware and cookbooks, and also runs the culinary department of jujutsu academy. (pretty popular probably because his little brother, yuuji, shows up every so often).
shoko ieiri.
here for the shits and giggles, shoko ieiri. her family consists of doctors and engineers which would lead into medical technology. she decided to go down the doctor route but will eventually need to replace her mother's position soon as she (her mother) would be retiring. ieiri joined the host club, just to accompany satoru and suguru, but has not minded the club activities since joining.
haibara yu.
here for the shits and giggles pt. 2, haibara yu (actually, kento asked him to take part of the host club with him). his family is one of the oldest toy manufacturers in japan, as well as branching out to confectioneryand theme parks (which have been successful endeavors). he also supplies all of the treats and tea imports for the host clubs, cutting down the expenses severely due to a large discount (but they do get new recipes sampled for free, just have to pay if they choose to keep it in their lineup)
(y/n) (l/n).
the dear princess manager of the host club. she works behind the scenes with the help of mostly kento but as well as suguru. her family is just old money rich, starting as medics way back during history. due to housing multiple patients and lost people, the business went from medical to hospitality. they moved around, dropping seeds down as they go. it eventually bloomed heavily, leaving a fortune. there's no rightful heir as her and her siblings must work together to figure it out (however, she seems to be the commander of it all)

what's your dissertation about? you mentioned it in the siltcord and i'm really interested
oh my god hey I'm so happy you're interested! broad strokes because I've only been working on it for a few weeks but: the current theme is 'resistant landscapes' (both man-made and natural) in the later writing of Shirley Jackson!
Essentially, my main thread is that Jackson had two parallel strands to her work, which as far as I can tell began kind of interrelated but then diverged quite significantly? She's probably best known now for The Haunting of Hill House and to a lesser extent We Have Always Lived In The Castle, which are these. weird surreal psychological horror novels, engaging explicitly or implicitly with the supernatural, and centred around introspective, strange and sometimes deeply misanthropic female characters from isolated social units with dysfunctional, possessive relationships to each other.
Aaaaand then on the other hand she was known for being a 'happy housewife' who wrote these whimsical, quasi-autobiographical stories about all her children and how hopeless her husband was. These were popular too. Betty Friedan called her out in landmark 1963 feminist manifesto The Feminine Mystique for essentially spreading patriarchal propaganda.
The interrelation between the two is really jarring, because in one family is a source of horror and tragedy and in the other it's a source of, like... laundry. And Jackson's home life wasn't everything those stories made it out to be-- her marriage was unfaithful, her mother could probably be fairly called emotionally abusive, and as I talked about on the siltcord, she developed severe agoraphobia which often left her housebound.
So, yeah. My plan is to explore the depiction of families as constructed social units in dialogue with the environments they are constructed in in that work. Obviously a lot of that is relation of house to family, in the context of which Hill House is especially rewarding to consider, but I also want to look at relationships with nature and urban environments (especially in the context of settler colonialism and how that has had an enduring legacy in Jackson's particular part of New England), xenophobia (largely in regard to class, though racism and anti-Semitism are presences in her writing), domesticity and the idea of the housewife, and how horror relates to All Of This. The ideal of making a home within a hostile environment and of that environment turning on you, essentially.
I don't yet have particular areas of focus within that broad umbrella, but I might update with bits and pieces about it as I work? I don't really talk about academic stuff on here but I am very much Critical Literary Analysis Guy and I do also post relentlessly about haunted houses as a concept so if people would be interested in it maybe I will
anyway if you've read this far I recommend Horror in Architecture: The Reanimated Edition (2024) by Joshua Comaroff and Ong Ker-Shing which is a book about how horror movie tropes can be mirrored in built environments! I'm reading it right now and it's conceptually fascinating plus fairlyyy comprehensible by academic standards (if a little dense) if you, like me, are a Fool who knows nothing of architecture. very good also for getting to look at pictures of some of the most Fucked Up Buildings (affectionate) you've ever seen.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was a pioneer of ecological architecture: Frei Otto, architect, engineer and inventor of lightweight structures like the German Pavilion at the Expo in Montreal 1967 and the roofs for the Olympic games in Munich 1972. To mark his centennial in 2025, Prestel recently published the present volume as both tribute to his achievement and a reminder of his topicality for a present in the wake of a climate crisis: „Frei Otto - Bauen mit der Natur“, edited by Anna-Maria Meister and Joaquín Medina Warmburg, brings together Otto’s most important works and new expert essays.
At the heart of the book lies the overall development of his innovative tensile structures and the application of principles observed in nature. Accordingly, the book is organized along the themes nature, technics and, interestingly, society. The latter aspect has received significantly less attention in the context of Frei Otto’s Gesamtwerk but indeed is an integral part of his architectural concept. This becomes clear in Georg Vrachliotis’ essay in which the author proceeds from the brochure „Wohn-Be-Reiche im Garten“, published in preparation for the 1987 IBA building exhibition in Berlin, and demonstrates how Otto connected questions of cohabitation with living in the green and lightweight constructions. It was an ongoing research that, in various guises, sought for ecological ways of life for the future. With the brochure, after all 150 pages long, Frei Otto presented a complex, multi-layered reflection of his own research and references that proved his prismatic thinking: depending on the viewing angle different theoretical approaches, ideas and concepts come to the fore and document his ability to capture and reflect the challenges posed by ecology and architecture alike.
This intellectual versatility characterized Frei Otto and it is the presentation of it that makes the book such a compelling read: by juxtaposing built work and theoretical considerations it documents that his open thinking and ability to synthesize various aspects of architecture, technology and nature are core aspects of his continuing relevance and a glowing example of how to tackle contemporary problems in architecture!

[MINECRAFT AU]
ISLANDERS : THE SEVEN RULING VILLAGER CLANS
—————————————
CLAN #01 : PLAINS
The common folk of the Grassland Plains Biome. They're a simple people, probably the most common and well-known villagers you'll encounter while exploring Caeloria. They have harvest festivals, public gatherings in central markets, and tell stories around the campfire. Their economy is made up of skilled farmers, traders, and builders. They produce and export grains, livestock, and crafted goods which vary on the profession. They rely on Iron Titans and rudimentary fortifications but distrust weapons (although some villagers like blacksmiths do create weapons for trading with people more open to violence.) Their villages are made up of homes with the timber-framed architecture style, wooden roofs, and are usually surrounded by small farms.
Tumblr media
CLAN #02 : DESERT
The inhabitants of the Desert Biomes. They are not as simple as the Plainsmen, and their culture is more focused on keeping a holy life, alongside securing a safe trip into the Afterlife. They do daily prayers to honor the sun, moon, and the passage of time itself, alongside intricate funeral ceremonies and rituals to ensure safe passage into the Afterlife. Their economy is famous for their trade caravans, glasswork, pottery, and exotic spices. While they also have Iron Titans, they use dynamite traps to protect their sacred temples and religious sanctuaries. The villages are made up of Sandstone, with domed roofs to regulate temperature, often built around oases and river beds.
Tumblr media
CLAN #03 : JUNGLE
The hunters that reside within jungle biomes. Unlike most villager clans, they're a militaristic civilization, focused mainly on hunting. They have daily ritual dances at sunrise and sunset, large hunting trips usually consisting of "packs", and a variety of face paint representing their roles in society, or, for a hunter; their achievements and rank in hunting. They're a people skilled in herbal medicine, dye-making, and the creation of weapons. Instead of living on the ground like most villagers, these hunters live in wooden treehouses interconnected by bridges to maintain high ground advantage during hunting. They use the vines of the trees to climb up and down. While they have their own variant of the Iron Titans, they also rely on boobie traps and ambushes from multiple packs as defense mechanisms.
Tumblr media
CLAN #04 : SAVANNA
Savanna Villagers are the second most welcoming villagers of Caeloria, and similar to the Plains Villagers, they rely on community, tradition, and peace. The main thing that separates them from the Plainsmen is their belief in astrology. They believe that the stars guide their fate, and a lot of their traditions revolve around astrology. Stargazing ceremonies, seasonal festivals aligned with celestial events (basically just.. holidays) and storytelling under the stars. Their economy is constructed of skilled weavers and artisans, known for intricate carving, cloth-dyeing, and crafting of jewelry, usually having a celestial theme. Unfortunately, I couldn't capture that as much as I could with the designs, as the concept came after they were already done. They're also expert animal handlers, known for domesticating and breeding fast horses for both companionship and a good defense mechanism, aside from the Iron Titans, ofcourse. Their villages are usually made up of terracotta or mud blocks, shaped in the style of mud-and-tatch huts. I also like to think that in-game there would be a massive baobab tree in the center of the village, which would lead in an Iron Titan attack if it were destroyed by a player.
Tumblr media
CLAN #05 : SWAMP
These guys are the black sheep of Villager society, even if per say the Jungle Clan's hunting traditions are questioned by the rest of village society, at least they keep their hunting trips tame! These guys are a full-on cult, the most controversial of the clans. Their traditions are rather questionable; they make blood sacrifices to some kind of "Spirit of The Swamp" some mystical natural energy they seem to try and appease. New members of the cult must craft their own ceremonial mask from the remains of a hunted beast, believed to bind them spiritually to the creature and grant them its strength. This is basically my in-universe reason for why certain things like skeleton heads, creeper heads, dragon heads, etc. can be collected. Maybe if this were a mod of some sorts you'd need some kind of mob skull to not get attacked while exploring the swamp? Idk. Every twenty years or so, a great hunt is held for a "cursed beast," often the last of a dying species, as they believe such creatures hold the most potent spiritual energy. We know the Sniffers are nearly extinct, maybe these villagers are related to that in some way. Hell, when we play the game, the Sniffer could be the beast they are out to hunt. Their economy is built on potion-making, fungus cultivation, and fishing. They lack Iron Titans for defense, instead relying on hunting and camouflage techniques, their houses themselves are designed to camouflage with the bog's trees. They're also oomfies with the Witches. With all this world-building done you'd be surprised to find out that these are actually my least favorite of the seven villager variants in-game.
Tumblr media
CLAN #06 : TAIGA
Considering the last two yap-fests, I have a lot less to say about the Taiga Villagers. They're a people who value trust, loyalty, strategy, and honor. They live in communal spruce wood long houses, typically working inside. They tend to train inside, meditating and having communal prayers inside of huts, circling around the campfire. Some also go out and meditate in the cold to test their endurance during full moons, which doubles as an opportunity to hunt for resources. Their economy is built on their massive supply of wood, meat, natural herbal remedies, and leather skins. They have Iron Titans that protect them from wild animals and Pillagers. They're strong allies with the Plainsmen, alongside the Desert and Savanna Tribes. Their strongest ally, however...
Tumblr media
CLAN #07 : TUNDRA
A group of small tribes that are master survivalists. They believe in community, honor, and strategy. They're the strongest ally to the Taiga Clan, and vice versa. They also don't mind trading with the Desert Clan. These cold and reserved people live within reinforced wooden cabins, often remaining inside at all times unless it is necessary to go out hunting. They trade seafood, wool, and rarer gems such as emeralds, gold, and even diamonds. They also trade large supplies of wood. That's all I really have to say about them!
Tumblr media
And that's all seven Villager clans redesigned and expanded upon!! I hope they came out looking decent lmfao

gingerbread; gwen stacy
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
featuring. gwen stacy x fem!reader
synopsis. making gingerbread with your girlfriend—gwen stacy.
warnings. none, just fluff! one suggestive joke and intense kiss description
Tumblr media
gingerbread—a cherished christmas classic that invokes a symphony of senses, whisking you away to a world of holiday enchantment. as much as you would hate to admit it to someone who is passionate about christmas, the art of constructing a gingerbread house has eluded you. well, perhaps there was a time in your youth when you attempted such a creation, but it never truly became an integral part of your holiday traditions. sure, you delighted in the occasional indulgence of premade gingerbread cookie snacks found at the local market, striving to awaken the spirit of the season. however, those moments were akin to coloring within the lines of gingerbread-themed books from your childhood—a fleeting taste of the magic.
but today, it seemed that this would change.
gwen, surprising a fervent advocate of all things christmas, extended an invitation to her home while her dad was out working late. the purpose? to make gingerbread.
as you stepped into gwen's apartment, a winter wonderland unfolded before you. the air was infused with the delicate fragrance of freshly cut pine, mingling harmoniously with the nostalgic scent of cinnamon and nutmeg. not to mention the little festive touches to the apartment like the wreath that was in your face as you knocked on the door.
in the heart of gwen's kitchen, a tableau of culinary goodness awaited. the ingredients for gingerbread lay scattered across the countertop, more than enough boxes than there should be of premade mix. the scent of ginger mingled with the warmth of the earthy undertones of almond, blending into a fragrant melody that coated the room in an irresistible aroma.
the room buzzed with excitement as you and gwen meticulously measured, combined ingredients, and kneaded the dough. the rhythmic sound of the wooden spoon swirling through the mixture created a rough cadence, accompanied by the gentle clinking of utensils against the mixing bowl.
time seemed to both pass by and stand still at the start of things. with each roll of the pin, the dough spread out, its surface becoming a blank canvas waiting to be shaped into something deliciously beautiful for you to destroyed. gingerbread walls, roofs, windows, and doors emerged from the malleable dough, ready to be transformed into a festive yet architectural masterpiece.
as the premade gingerbread pieces were placed in the oven, the minutes stretched out like taffy, building an air of suspense. the addictive scent of freshly baked gingerbread wafted through the kitchen, enveloping you in its warm embrace.
finally, with a melodious ding, the timer announced the completion of the baking process—a moment that marked the birth of something truly extraordinary.
impatience tinged your words as you exclaimed, "goddamn, i could practically feel my toenails growing in place while waiting for that damn timer!" your frustration evident, you turned your head to the side, seeking any distraction from the anticipation that had reached its peak. with a determined stride, you made your way to the oven, bending down to peer inside. the radiant light within the oven cast a mesmerizing glow upon the smooth, golden-brown texture of the gingerbread, causing your mouth to almost involuntarily salivate.
as you stood there, captivated by the sight before you, gwen playfully observed your expression and couldn't help but chuckle. "take it easy," she teased, joining you by the oven. "even as your girlfriend, i don't think i want to eat gingerbread covered with frosting and... saliva."
her playful remark lightened the moment, allowing a smile to grace your face. the warmth of her presence, coupled with the tantalizing aroma filling the air, intensified the feeling of holiday joy. with a deliberate grace, gwen adorned the oven mitts, preparing to retrieve the gingerbread from its warm haven. as she carefully lifted the tray and placed it on the countertop, the sweet fragrance enveloped the room, an atmosphere of festive delight. it was as if the very essence of christmas had materialized in that humble batch of gingerbread.
"voilà!" gwen declared, her eyes gleaming mischievously. "our gingerbread base is ready for some serious decorating." the prospect of adorning the freshly baked canvas with a burst of color and creativity brought a renewed sense of excitement, infusing the air with a contagious energy.
gwen's eyes sparkled with mischief as she turned to face you, a playful grin spreading across her face. "so, my creative partner in crime, any design in mind for our masterpiece?" her words inviting your imagination to run wild. "i was thinking a haunted gingerbread house, complete with gummy worms and licorice spiders. but i'm open to suggestions, of course." a sigh left your lips, of course spiders.
you couldn't help but wear a sly smirk on your face as you locked eyes with gwen, indulging in the banter between you. "y’know, you sound so corny right now," you jest, a hint of truth lacing your words, eliciting a dry laugh.
gwen couldn't help but laugh at your reaction. "alright, alright, no more cringey names, got it," she replied, feigning seriousness.
sauntering toward the countertop, you leaned on it, peering closely at the freshly baked gingerbread, contemplating the possibilities. "how about we recreate your apartment? a cute lil’ surprise for mister stacy when he returns home."
the thought of transforming the gingerbread canvas into a miniature replica of her own living space definitely excited gwen, even if it was up to debate if she had the skill to execute that.
“i would love for my dad to come home to see a miniature gingerbread version of our apartment,” she put it simply. gwen leaned against the countertop next to you, examining the gingerbread pieces. "we'll need to get creative with the decorations. maybe some pretzel stick furniture, and we can use icing to make tiny portraits of us hanging on the gingerbread walls," she suggested, eyes sparkling with excitement.
gwen walked off to her cabinets and grabbed an array of things ranging from sprinkles, pretzels and cookies, to gumdrops she had stored all the way in the back where you swore you could’ve seen some cobwebs. "so, how's it feel to be in the presence of a master gingerbread architect? i hope you can keep up with my design skills, babe,” gwen smirked playfully, raising an eyebrow at you.
you couldn’t help but let a laugh escape from your throat. “master gingerbread architect? please, if you can’t make your webs stick to the side of a building for more than fifteen seconds i can only imagine how you think you’ll be able to stick two gingerbread walls together with some frosting,” you tease, playfully bumping her hip.
gwen couldn't help but burst into laughter at your remark, pretending to be offended. "hey now, my web-slinging skills may not translate perfectly to gingerbread construction, but i'll have you know i've got a few tricks up my sleeve," she quipped, winking at you.
as she picked up the box of icing, she playfully flicked a bit of it in your direction. "watch out, or i might just stick you to the gingerbread walls too," gwen teased, sticking her tongue out at you.
but in all seriousness, she was grateful for moments like these, where you could just be yourselves and have fun together. as you focused on decorating the gingerbread pieces, she couldn't help but steal glances at you, a soft smile playing on her lips. it was moments like these that made her appreciate how lucky she is to be in your presence.
you chuckled lowly at her little threat. “i think you should watch out then, cus’ who said i wouldn’t enjoy being webbed to the wall by you?” you questioned, making a bold comment to the tall blonde.
you watched as she got together the frosting, mixing it before putting it in baggies. you began copying her movements, helping her mix the already selected holiday colors such as red, green, and white and put them in their respective baggie before cutting the tip of it so it can dispense the frosting.
gwen couldn't help but blush at your daring response, her pale skin transitioning to a pretty rose while feeling a rush of affection toward you. "oh, you’d enjoy it, huh?" she replied, voice laced with amusement. "well, maybe i'll have to put that to the test sometime."
as you worked together to mix the frosting and fill the baggies, she admired the way you effortlessly picked up on the process. it was one of the reasons she loved being with you—you always embraced new challenges with determination and a willingness to learn.
or at least get through those said challenges… if anything.
gwen grabbed a decorative plate, seemingly a fancy traditional plate that looked irish, probably a gift from her grandparents to her dad. once the frosting was ready, she grabbed one of the gingerbread walls and the floor from the parchment and put a dollop to the plate to make it act as glue for stability. then, she began piping a decorative trim along the edges, using the red frosting. gwen delicately squeezed the baggie, letting the smooth, creamy texture glide onto the cookie. the scent of the sugary frosting mixed with the warm gingerbread, creating an intoxicating aroma.
she glanced over at you, noticing your focused expression as you worked on your own piece. "looking good over there," gwen complimented with a grin, playfully nudging your shoulder. “gingerbread, not you, well you are but- i’m talking about your lovely art right there.”
you let out a choked laugh as your hand faltered from piping the frosting down the side of one of the big gingerbread squares for the apartment. it wasn’t too difficult, but for someone who doesn’t do this annually you clearly struggled with some things. “all i've done so far is stick the back wall to the other side that you did,” you state plainly. “if this is art to you then i would hate to hear what you think of picasso.”
gwen couldn't help but let out a boisterous laugh at your self-deprecating comment. "hey, don't sell yourself short! i’m sure picasso would be so proud to see your one singular gingerbread wall," she reassured you, trying to suppress her giggles.
gwen put her piping bag down and walked over to your direction. you felt her chest hit your back as both her arms snaked from behind your waist to your arms. she reached over and gently took your hand, guiding it back to the frosting baggie. "here, let me show you a little trick. just apply a little pressure and let the frosting flow out smoothly all on its own. you got it," she encouraged, setting an example for you.
you tried to pay attention, but it was hard when her smooth yet raspy voice was whispering in your ear, so close you felt her breath tickling your cheek.
you both continued decorating the gingerbread walls, adding intricate details and personal touches. gwen used the white frosting to create a snow-like effect on the roof, while you expertly piped green frosting to resemble a wreath on the front door.
as you worked side by side, the room filled with laughter and the sweet scent of gingerbread and frosting. it was moments like these, where both of you could be silly and enjoy each other's company, that truly made gwen's heart flutter.
you carefully spread a layer of frosting inside the gingerbread house, creating a smooth carpet-like surface. a mischievous grin plays on your lips as an idea takes hold. secretly, you squeeze a dollop of frosting onto your pointer finger, ready to execute your playful plan. "gwen, come see the carpet i did," you command, diverting her attention from the oh so important and intricate task of assembling miniature furniture out of cookies, pretzels, and other random yet surprisingly edible materials. she turns towards you, her gaze fixed on your direction, unsuspecting of what's about to happen.
swiftly, you rise onto the balls of your feet, reaching her height, and with a quick and unexpected motion, you press the frosting onto the tip of her nose, smudging it up towards the bridge. a mischievous giggle escapes your lips as you revel in the spontaneous act, marveling at the frosting adorning gwen's nose.
gwen's eyes widen in surprise, a gasp escaping her lips as her fingertips touch the sticky yet velvety texture of the vibrant green frosting adorning her nose. its hue is so vivid, it could rival even the grinch himself. her eyes widened in mock shock, but a mischievous grin quickly spread across her face. "oh, it's on now!" the blonde exclaimed, playfully narrowing her eyes at you.
without missing a beat, she grabbed a dollop of frosting from the table and quickly retaliated, smearing it on your cheek. "oops, looks like you've got a little something on your face," gwen teased, unable to contain her laughter.
the two of you burst into a fit of giggles, frosting-covered fingers and all. you couldn’t take each other seriously. as the frosting war continued, you both ended up with streaks of frosting on your faces, looking more like abstract art than gingerbread decorators. but it didn't matter—you were having fun, and that's all that truly mattered in that moment.
“hey, i put a lil’ dot on you and not this fat ass blob,” you defend, wiping some of the frosting from the pile she planted on your nose and adding it to her nose. “cute nose job, rudolph. not lookin’ botched at all,” you teased.
gwen couldn't help but laugh at your quick retort, wiping off some of the frosting from her nose and smearing it on your lower jaw. "oh, so you're a critic now, huh?" she playfully responded, a smirk as clear as a snow globe. "well, i'm just gonna add some extra flair to your already sexy nose. rudolph will have nothing on you."
your laughter filled the room as we continued the frosting battle, merrily colorful streaks on each other's faces. no matter how silly or ridiculous you two might look, you were always able to find joy and laughter together.
but amidst the chaos, gwen couldn't help but steal a moment to appreciate your playful spirit and the way your eyes sparkled with mischief. you were truly her partner in crime, and she wouldn't want it any other way. or how she would put it, her “creative partner in gingerbread crime.” well, whatever that means.
the frosting war continued, we eventually ran out of ammunition, leaving you both covered in frosting from head to shoulder. you and your girlfriend stood there, breathless from laughter, and she couldn't resist pulling you into a tight, frosting-covered hug. "you're the best, you know that?" gwen whispered, her voice filled with genuine affection as raspy as it came.
you instinctively step back from the hug, finding yourself nose-deep in gwen's sweater. the thick frosting that had made its way into your nostrils tickles uncomfortably, and you valiantly suppress the urge to let out a loud sneeze. hastily grabbing a napkin, you wipe away the frosting, finally lifting your gaze to meet gwen's as her words register in your mind.
in that moment, clarity dawns upon you, and you realize what she said. the initial distraction of the frosting mishap fades away as you comprehend the deeper meaning behind her innocent words.
“what?” you questioned, urging her to repeat it.
gwen quickly snapped out of her daze, realizing that she had been staring at you. a slight blush crept up on the blonde’s cheeks as she realized that she had been caught. "oh, uh, sorry," gwen stammered, sounding a bit softer than usual. "i was just… admiring how cute you look, even covered in frosting."
a nervous chuckle escapes gwen's lips, a blush creeping across her cheeks as she finds herself feeling more embarrassed than that one time her headphones failed her during class, blaring my chemical romance for an unplanned five seconds. "i guess i got lost in the moment there. but hey, you're always a sight to see, whether you're covered in frosting or not," she stated, trying to play it off like her hands still don’t falter to shake when you make her nervous. gwen reached out and gently wiped a bit of frosting off your cheek with my thumb, her touch lingering for a moment. "you’re my favorite mess," gwen added.
a warmth spreads across your cheeks in response to gwen's comment. "oh, really?" you retort, secretly wanting to hear more from her. however, you quickly regain your composure, reminding yourselves of the task at hand. "enough, we still have shit to do," you interject, trying to steer the focus back to the gingerbread house.
gwen raised an eyebrow at your response, but couldn't help but notice the underlying hint of vulnerability in your tone. “learn to take a compliment,” she comments.
but gwen's soft smile tugs at your heartstrings, drawing you closer to her. she leans in, her gaze fixed on your eyes, as if she's searching for something deeper within you. in a surprising move, she uses her thumb, still adorned with the frosting she had wiped off you, and gently smears it across your lips. her voice carries innocence as she remarks, "looks like you've got a little something."
the touch of gwen's thumb against your lips sends a subtle jolt of electricity through your body, leaving you momentarily breathless.
but as she stepped closer to you, faces mere inches apart, gwen couldn't resist the magnetic pull between you.
as you close the remaining distance between you, gwen's lips meet yours with a gentle, lingering pressure, initiating a tender kiss. the sensation of her lips against yours sends a shiver of delight down your spine. the world around you seems to dissolve into a hazy blur, leaving only the two of you enveloped in a moment of pure connection.
your lips move in perfect synchronization with gwen's, their dance a delicate and intimate rhythm. each brush and caress of her soft lips against yours ignites a cascade of sensations to your skin—subtle yet electrifying. the taste of the frosting lingers on your tongues, a delectable blend of sweetness merging with the warmth of her own unique lip balm, a hint of vanilla intertwined with the minty sweetness.
lost in the tender embrace, you become acutely aware of every detail—the velvety texture of her lips, the way they meet and meld with yours in the most gentle and affectionate manner in which she moves. it's a moment where time stands still, where nothing else matters except the intoxicating closeness and shared intimacy between the two of you.
as you gently pull away from the kiss, your eyes instinctively rise to meet gwen's gaze. her lips, now adorned with a generous coating of green frosting, seem to attract even more of the sticky sweetness due to the presence of her lip balm. a rush of heat floods your cheeks, betraying your flustered state, while gwen smirks knowingly at you. a dry scoff escapes her lips, her eyes fixed unwaveringly on you, clearly surprised by the effect she has on you.
your attention is captivated as gwen's tongue emerges, delicately gliding along her lower lip, collecting the frosting in a deliberate and tantalizing manner. the sight of her tongue ascending to her upper lip, methodically removing the sweet coating, holds you in a mesmerized state. you watch with unwavering focus, afraid to tear your gaze away, as she withdraws her tongue back into her mouth, savoring the taste once more.
gwen, fully aware of the effect her actions have on you, wears an expression of both satisfaction and amusement. it becomes evident that she takes pleasure in being the sole catalyst for such a reaction from you, relishing in the power she holds over your senses.
as gwen finished licking off the frosting from her lips, she let out another low laugh. "mmm, still tastes as good as ever," she commented, her voice tauntingly husky. "you’re right, enough is enough. let’s get back to work, shall we?"
with a playful wink directed your way, gwen swiftly turns around, retrieving a towel and extending it towards you. you accept it, grateful for the gesture, as she grabs another towel for herself. without missing a beat, she proceeds to wipe her face clean, the remnants of frosting vanishing from her lips and leaving behind a pristine canvas. with a determined focus, she resumes her position, ready to dive back into the task at hand.
as you and gwen huddle together, the gingerbread apartment sprawled out before you, a wave of excitement washing over you both. the gingerbread walls, perfectly baked and golden brown, stand tall and sturdy, ready to be transformed. with nimble fingers, you take the lead, carefully applying royal icing along the seams of the rest of the walls, joining them together to form the structure. gwen follows suit, her touch deft and precise, ensuring the stability of the gingerbread apartment. the icing, a pristine white, resembles freshly fallen snow, enhancing the enchanting charm of the scene.
together, you meticulously construct the details—a miniature door, adorned with candy cane stripes, opens up to reveal a sugary haven within. the windows, crafted from translucent sugar sheets, allow glimpses into the home.
inside the gingerbread apartment, you and gwen become masterful decorators, so much so even the hgtv channel overlords would envy you two. tiny tinsel garlands, carefully woven together, drape along the walls, reflecting the glow of imaginary holiday lights. delicate icicle-shaped ornaments, made from crystallized sugar, hang from the ceilings, shimmering with a frosted sparkle. the living room area boasts a miniature christmas tree, painstakingly fashioned from piped green icing and dressed with tiny edible baubles, crafted from old halloween candies. a crackling fireplace, created by using chocolate shavings and red m&ms, casts a false warmth to the empty room. moving into the kitchen, a gingerbread dining table, complete with intricate icing lacework, holds a feast of miniature treats. tiny gingerbread cookies, iced with intricate designs, sit in a bowl, waiting to be enjoyed by you and your girlfriend. plates of assorted candies and chocolates are arranged, slowly dwindling as your hands continue to dig into the bowl for more material.
the two of you continued working on the gingerbread house, your playful banter and teasing gradually fading into a comfortable silence. as you placed the final touches, the gingerbread apartment began to take shape, looking like a cozy little abode.
both of you stepped back, admiring your handiwork. the walls were neatly decorated with frosting trim, the roof had a snowy white frosting coating, and the windows were outlined with colorful candies. it was painfully over-stimulating to the eyes of anyone who hates christmas, but also beautiful.
gwen reached out and took your hand in hers, squeezing it gently. "look at that! we make quite the dynamic duo, don't we?" she remarked, a bit too prideful of her mediocre work. "our gingerbread house is the envy of all gingerbread houses.”
you continue to stare at it, finally realizing why it bothered you. “it’s missing something,” you put simply. “we need to add the little people who will live in this apartment.”
gwen nodded in agreement, leaning a bit onto your shoulder to see from your perspective. "you're right, it needs some little residents to bring it to life," she replied, her mind already racing with ideas.
she reached for the bowl of extra gingerbread dough and started rolling it out. gwen looked over at you, a soft yet evident grin on her face. "how about we make gingerbread versions of ourselves? it'll be like a little homage to us," she suggested, a playful smile tugging at the corners of my lips.
gwen began cutting out the shapes, carefully crafting miniature versions of the both of you with the dough. as she added the details, gwen couldn't help but chuckle at the tiny gingerbread drum set she included for her miniature self.
once the dough was baked and cooled, you set to work on decorating our gingerbread doppelgangers.
as gwen rummages through her cabinets, retrieving an array of icing tubes, a flicker of suspicion tugs at the corners of your mind. the sheer variety she has in her possession leaves you slightly amazed, as well as curious and a bit concerned. nonetheless, you set aside your intrigue and begin piping the features of your gingerbread creation, starting with your own skin tone, meticulously crafting every detail.
glancing over at gwen's side, a knowing smirk graces your lips as you catch a glimpse of her artistic endeavors. with precision and flair, she expertly pipes her iconic half-shaved hairstyle onto the gingerbread figure. the piercing blue eyes she possesses, which sometimes give you the creeps, are replicated with remarkable accuracy. the adorable ensemble of wide-legged jeans, converse shoes, and a shirt adorned with a hand-drawn heart catches your attention. squinting slightly, you can read word for word what it says.
"i heart my girlfriend?" you repeat aloud, surprise evident in your voice.
gwen's laughter rings out, full and infectious. "you took the words out of my mouth," she playfully teases, reveling in the shared sentiment.
unable to resist the warmth that spreads across your face, you steal a glance to your right, discovering that gwen has already crafted a little gingerbread man of her father. turning your attention back to your own mini-you, you work diligently, not wanting to fall behind the swift pace set by your girlfriend.
as you finished and placed the gingerbread versions of yourselves inside the gingerbread house, it truly came to life.
you stepped back, taking in the sight of your creation one final time. "perfect," you declared, a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction filling you.
"it’s so perfect,” gwen adds, mimicking what you said.
you let out an exaggerated eye-roll, your playful annoyance evident. "well, thanks for that," you quip, though your words are tinged with a hint of amusement. but then, as a mischievous thought strikes you, you freeze in mock disbelief, placing your hands dramatically on your head.
in a sarcastically shocked tone, you inquire, "but wait... who will protect them from harm?" your voice drips with playful melodrama, heightening the comedic effect of your question.
slowly turning towards her, you meet her gaze, awaiting her response. with a mischievous grin, she finally breaks her silence.
"i'm so glad you asked," she declares.
in one swift motion, gwen lifts her mini gingerbread representation of herself and playfully makes it leap onto the roof of the gingerbread apartment. as she rotates it, a delightful surprise is revealed—the infamous ghost spider suit, meticulously piped onto the other side down to the mask to the teal ballet slippers.
"don't worry," gwen reassures you with a touch of theatrical flair, "i'll be there to save my damsel in distress."
you try to maintain an unamused expression, your face fighting back a smile as you struggle not to burst into laughter.
gwen couldn't help but break into uncontrollable laughs at your reaction, her shoulders shaking with mirth.
"surprise!" she exclaimed, unable to contain her amusement. "you didn’t think i would add the one and only spider woman of new york? you had to have seen this coming."
gwen playfully made her mini gingerbread ghost spider do a little victory dance on the roof of the gingerbread apartment, reveling in the silliness of it all. but beneath the lightheartedness, there was a hint of truth to her words.
she walked over to you, wrapping her arms around your waist, laughter subsiding into a warm smile. "but y’know, i don't need a superhero suit to be your hero," she whispered.
gwen couldn't help but lean in again, pressing a gentle kiss to your lips, the taste of frosting still lingering.
both of you erupted into laughter, unable to contain your amusement at gwen's joke. the joyful sound filled the room until it was cut short as the door knob turned and the door abruptly swung open, revealing gwen's father returning home from his shift at the station.
"how's it going, girls..." his voice trailed off, his steps slowing as he took in the unexpected scene before him.
the air was thick with the scent of frosting, and the room bore witness to a delightful chaos of flour, candies, and scattered decorations. but amidst the mess, the most prominent sight was your meticulously crafted miniature replica of the apartment.
you both froze in place as her dad's voice filled the room, a mix of embarrassment and panic coursing through your girlfriend's veins. she turned to face him, cheeks burning with a bright shade of red she usually rocked when embarrassed. "uh... hey, dad," gwen stammered, trying to sound casual despite the chaos surrounding you both.
gwen quickly glanced at you, hoping to find some solace in the situation, but it seemed like you were just as caught off guard as her. she could practically hear the gears turning in her dad's head as he tried to make sense of the scene before him.
before he could say anything, gwen took a deep breath and mustered up all the confidence she could. "surprise, dad! we made a gingerbread apartment!" she blurted out, gesturing towards your creation. "and, uh, we may have gotten a little carried away with the frosting and...stuff.”
“stuff?” george repeated, stepping closer to the counter to get an even better look at the creation. you could see her dad's expression soften as he took in the sight, his lips twitching with the hint of a smile. "well, it certainly looks like you two had a blast," he chuckled, shaking his head. "just make sure to clean up after yourselves, alright?"
in perfect synchrony, your voices blend seamlessly as you both respond simultaneously with the words "of course, mr. stacy" and "yes, dad.”
relief washed over you both as you realized her dad wasn't angry or upset. he understood that sometimes you both could get a little carried away with our antics. you both nodded vigorously, already planning on how to tackle the mess.
as her dad left the kitchen, she turned to you with a sheepish smile. "well, that could have gone worse," gwen affirmed, relief evident in the way her chest exhaled. "looks like we'll have a lot of cleaning up to do, huh?"
“a lot seems like an oversimplification of it,” you groan, looking around at the absolute mess you both made of the kitchen. “and here i thought we was finally gonna eat the damn thing”
gwen grabbed a nearby towel and started wiping the frosting off the table, motioning for you to join her. "but you know what they say, babe. teamwork makes the dream work," she added, causing you to instinctually roll your eyes yet again.
as you diligently sweep the floor, meticulously wash down the counters, and even kneel down to scrub away any lingering evidence of your reckless baking, your eyes continue to wander back to the oh so enchanting gingerbread house. its intricate details and sugary allure beckon you, tempting your senses to just skip the cleaning and go straight to dessert. from a distance, gwen chuckles playfully as she attentively wipes down the inside of the stove.
"ahem," she interrupts. "i must kindly request that you refrain from placing your little grimy hands on our masterpiece," gwen mockingly asserts.
she pauses, allowing a moment for her words to sink in. "please, let it exist in its full glory for at least thirty more minutes," she pleads, a hint of jest coloring her voice. "or, if you can't resist, at least capture its beauty on your phone before you rip it apart."
a deep sigh escaped from your lips as you surrender to your girlfriend, continuing to guide the broom across the floor.

“The View From the Other Side of the Glass” : Window Imagery in House, M.D. and What It Says About Isolation, Intimacy, and Human Pain
In House, M.D., windows are more than architectural features—they’re metaphors for the emotional and psychological barriers between characters. The show’s deliberate use of glass and transparency reflects themes of isolation, observation, and the struggle for genuine connection.
1. The Transparent Divide: Watching Without Touching
From the pilot episode, Dr. Gregory House is often depicted observing patients through glass walls. This visual motif showcases his role as a detached diagnostician, preferring observation over direct engagement. The glass serves as a barrier, allowing him to analyze without emotional involvement.
In Season 1, Episode 1 (“Pilot”), House watches a patient from behind a glass wall, symbolizing his reluctance to form personal connections. This recurring imagery emphasizes his self-imposed isolation and the emotional distance he maintains from others.
2. Wilson’s Office and the Art of Half-Intimacy
The glass wall between House’s and Dr. James Wilson’s offices serves as a physical representation of their complex friendship. The adjustable blinds on this window reflect the fluctuating levels of openness and secrecy between them.
In Season 2, Episode 24 (“No Reason”), the blinds are closed during a critical conversation, highlighting the emotional barriers that exist even in their closest relationships. The manipulation of this window space demonstrates the tension between vulnerability and self-protection.
3. The Patient Room: Being Seen vs. Being Known
Patient rooms encased in glass walls transform individuals into subjects of observation, emphasizing the clinical detachment inherent in medical diagnosis. This design choice reflects the show’s exploration of the tension between empathy and objectivity.
In Season 3, Episode 12 (“One Day, One Room”), a patient requests to speak privately with House, challenging the norm of constant observation. This deviation from the transparent setting shows the patient’s desire for genuine human connection beyond clinical scrutiny.
4. The Vista of Loneliness: House’s Apartment
House’s apartment features large windows overlooking the city, symbolizing his isolation amidst a bustling world. These windows allow him to observe life without participating in it, reinforcing his detachment from society.
In Season 5, Episode 24 (“Both Sides Now”), House sits alone in his apartment, the city lights visible through the window behind him. This imagery accentuates his solitude and the emotional walls he has constructed around himself.
5. Breaking Glass: Rare Moments of Emotional Honesty
Occasionally, the show uses shattered or distorted glass to signify moments when House’s emotional defenses crumble. These visual cues represent breakthroughs in his psychological barriers.
In Season 5, Episode 24 (“Both Sides Now”), House experiences hallucinations that blur the line between reality and illusion, depicted through fragmented reflections. This distortion of glass imagery illustrates his internal turmoil and the collapse of his mental defenses.
6. The Final Shot (Spoiler Warning, Obviously)
In the series finale, Season 8, Episode 22 (“Everybody Dies”), House and Wilson ride motorcycles on an open road, free from the confines of glass and walls. This departure from the show’s typical enclosed settings symbolizes House’s release from his self-imposed isolation and his choice to embrace life.
So What Does It All Mean?
Throughout House, M.D., window imagery serves as a powerful narrative device, illustrating the characters’ emotional states and the barriers they construct. The pervasive use of glass demonstrates themes of isolation, the desire for connection, and the complexities of human vulnerability. By examining these visual elements, viewers gain deeper insight into the characters’ internal struggles and the show’s exploration of the human condition.

🔥elias/jonah 👀
i think. carceral politics is what we need to be talking about wrt jonah/elias, not "he's a classism/capitalism allegory". that's boring, also largely baseless as i've said before, the classism one has some basis but personally, for it to work jonah has to believe it and everything we get to know about him points toward a worldview which renounces social constructs ("What’s out there… doesn’t care about blood." - gerard in MAG 111). but i think there is absolutely some political content to 'georgian guy vampirically drains and consumes everyone in his orbit' who also helped build a prison where architecture explicitly functions as a form of control. his work at the institute in london is a continuation of that with the way the archives staff ends up, well, imprisoned within the institute. the most adequate descriptor for elias is that he's their jailer. and then you have the apocalypse which is also essentially conceived as a big prison system, with avatars in charge of each individual domain fulfilling the role of prison officers. the penal labour in this scenario is obviously the collective fear of the entrapped being fed on by beholding. and they entirely stop calling it 'the institute' and switch to 'the panopticon' full time, so the writing is not particularly subtle about it? i just think this works way better as an allegory because when it comes down to it, tma is about control and agency. freedom at someone else's expense. "jonah being so existentially terrified about not being truly free that he resigns the rest of the world to perpetual penal servitude" just feels a lot more in line with the actual themes of the podcast, i suppose.

11 Underexplored settings of post-apocalyptic worlds
Inspired once again by my recent binge of abandoned explorations.
The greatest hits of the sprawling city scapes and farmland that feature in everything from post-alien invasions to zombie takeovers to just worlds gone by in a not-so-distant future tend to be:
Generic office buildings
Churches
Schools
Water parks
Suburbs
Famous monuments
Cruise ships
It’s come to my attention though just how many architectural abnormalities there are, in their own current post-apocalyptic states, that would absolutely befuddle archaeologists centuries from now trying to figure out their purposes.
So whether you want to go hard into “this new world has completely forgotten what came before it” or your very own and unique road trip through desolation, here’s some suggestions for cool and/or practical settings!
1. Disney/Iconic Theme Parks
2000 years from now after X disaster strikes, survivors completely removed from historical context stumble upon…. Disney World. They presume Mickey really was a giant mutant mouse, or a mouse-shaped deity worshiped by the local populace (and I mean… are they wrong?). People who might have never left the local area without planes and feasible transport, or knowledge that land across the ocean even exists, might be astounded by the buildings of Epcot’s World Showcase, or any of Disney’s themed resorts.
Water parks are done to death, but not enough emphasis is put onto how bizarre these places would look without context, even to a younger generation that has no idea what it used to be.
Orlando has a hotel with its own rainforest in a massive atrium, with ponds and boats and boardwalks inside. But, you know, I guess strolling through Chicago or New York City is cooler. It may be unfilmable, but it’s not unwritable.
2. The foundations of unfinished construction projects
The remains of an office building that never was, a veritable modern Stonehenge with how little would survive an apocalypse. Inexplicable areas of land with massive pits for unbuilt parking garages, or sprawling swimming pools and lazy rivers.
Or massive, skeletal towers that would have been the monument to a much larger estate that just lost funding. Buildings still surrounded by scaffolding, only half-complete with their windows.
3. Survivor’s encampment landmarked by a monument/hotel/theme park that was never built
In one of those abandoned videos, a company in China was trying to build a discount Disneyland and all that remains is an unfinished Cinderella Castle with steel shells of the gables… behind a modern shopping mall.
Any structure that would have been deeply out of place either in the country it’s built in, or the newer buildings that surround it, immediately looks more creative than just ‘generic strip mall’ or ‘generic high school’. And it’s also realistic, as projects like this fall through constantly, as a unique piece of your worldbuilding. Or, it did have its run as whatever the strange building was part of, and through bankruptcy and selling the land around it, it ends up being the only structure that remains.
4. Hotels that are made up as if the staff vanished instantaneously
Or, many, many Covid victims. Having your characters scrounge for resources through a hotel with beds still made, coffee cups on the breakfast tables, serving spoons and plates ready to go by the buffet. Halloween, Christmas, or Valentine’s decorations still on display.
The schedules for the final week of business still hanging in the offices, unopened mail, packages for guests still in the mail room, pallets of new soaps and supplies still in the delivery bay from the distribution center, linens still in the industrial dryers. I worked in a hotel scheduled for eventual demolition and the disrepair the interior fell into because, what’s the point of managing mold and bed bugs when it’s all getting gutted anyway, makes it super creepy knowing guests are completely clueless on the other side.
Places that have been completely ransacked and destroyed are creepy, sure, but places that are almost frozen in time despite the decay around them are both eerie, and rather dark. Cruise ships/confined spaces like ships tend to be used more for horror, but these, too, as if they’re frozen in time.
5. Cargo ships/shipping yards
An easy-ish one to film in. Looters breaking open shipping containers, or building entire communities and homes out of those containers either on land, or on the barges and ships. A community that can weigh anchor and move once resources and scavenging dries up, or another violent group moves in on the land.
Or, in the case of a viral apocalypse, a community relatively spared from the violence out on the open ocean.
6. IKEA/Furniture Warehouses and DC’s
Warehouses especially have few entries and fewer windows to secure, but as their contents (except the showroom floor) are in mint condition at the time of the world ending and probably stored in plastic and crates, they’d be relatively spared from the elements as a good base camp.
Furniture is also too heavy to loot in a panic and absconding with a brand new mattress probably wouldn’t be at the top of people’s minds as doomsday approaches.
Your little community each having their own lavish living spaces with whatever eclectic furniture they either liked or could now get their hands on for free would just be cool to read about.
7. Penthouse suites
Climbing those stairs would suck and depending on the build quality, the safety of the structure over time would degrade, but maybe your community has manual cranks for the elevators. There might be one way down, but there’s also only one way up, and you can see invaders and catastrophe coming for miles.
These places tend to be dripping in luxury your characters might otherwise have never experienced and they could either make a base there, or have a grand old time trashing the place up because the rich are dead and gone.
8. Historical forts
They lasted this long, why not a few centuries more? The fort that comes to mind is the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, Florida, right on the beach with a built-in defense wall and a huge courtyard for your community of plucky survivors.
Castles, too, though they’d likely be prime real estate for all manner of interested parties. Aging, famous forts are just never in these types of stories, unless it’s a picture of where the military used to be, now overrun or destroyed.
9. Ski resorts
Similar to the made-up hotels and theme parks, this one comes with presumably multiple buildings, potential use of the slopes and ski transports, isolation via elevation and remoteness from major cities, and the threat of bitter winters and blizzards.
Never been to one myself in winter, but remote locations for a post-apocalypse story tends to just be shorthand for “generic farm or small town,” which isn’t super immersive.
10. Luxury malls
Seen in The Last of US, it gives you a microcosm of so many different environments all slapped together and there’s no limit on what kinds of stores you could include, or all the kiosks, all the mini attractions like trampolines, kiddie parks, massage tables, and even VR flight simulators.
Maybe it has a theater tacked onto it, or a double-story book store, one of those rental spaces dedicated to fancy cars or candy stores. Great for the main setting or even just passing through, especially as they’re already a dying breed you can go ham with. ‘Luxury’ and designer items collecting dust right across from the discount store with everything for under &14.99 could strike a powerful message about social constructs.
11. Science museums
Sure you can make some poignant message about priceless artwork being left to rot, or. When I was a kid, I went to a science center with natural disaster simulators like house fires and tornadoes and a whole-ass IMAX theater where I saw Night at the Museum, the only movie I’ve ever seen in a proper IMAX dome.
There was a whole kids section with a ropes course, area for exploring the human body, a NASA-sponsored mock up space module, mock up grocery store, and little exhibits here and there about optical illusions and the physics behind laying on a bed of nails and how it doesn’t kill you. It’s just something unique and fun that your characters can interact with and gives them plenty to play off and give little anecdotes to make them feel more human.
Point is, your post-apocalypse doesn’t have to be limited to the usual suspects. We’ve all seen the strip malls and Walmarts and suburban homes and farms. There is no special effects budget or filming restraint in a book and I’d love to read more stories set in unique and descriptive places, or just fresh takes on your standard survival camp that isn’t just “build a wall around a section of neighborhood”.
It’s the apocalypse. All real estate becomes free real estate.

The city as inspiration
One of my favorite episodes of season 2 is without a doubt 2x03, one of my favorite parts is where we see a little of Syd's creative process, I love how they present us with a superposition of images of food, architecture, and close-ups of Syd's face.
This superposition of images takes us into Syd's creative process, it shows us how Syd uses the architecture of the city as a composition element for his dish, since he is inspired by the shape of the buildings to give shape to what I assume they are ravioli. She plays with the organic shapes she observes in "The Marina City", and also tries with the orthogonal shapes of the more square elements that are around, whether buildings or windows, these two options Syd draws in her notebook.

However, in the end they show us a third option: a mixture of both: a ravioli with an orthogonal shape and wavy edges (although I no longer identify if this is the final option for the dish).

Following this theme of organic shapes and orthogonal shapes, I noticed that Syd in her famous green jacket wears organic shapes, while Carmy's iconic jacket is composed of orthogonal shapes, this wardrobe choice, I don't know if it is related to what I commented above, but I like to think so.

Another topic that I liked is the parallelism between the conception of a building and the creation of a dish, since we see details of the creation of Marina City: from sketches, interior plans, to photos of the construction process, These images contrast with the images referring to the creation of a dish, and the show combines these two during season 2: architecture and cuisine come together to give life to The Bear, a menu of chaos and a Danish style.

“Knowing who we are is the most important truth we can attain in this reality and the awakened Third Eye is a result of that Divine inner truth.”
~ Mynzah
The All-Seeing Eye, also known as the Eye of Providence, is one of the most potent and enduring symbols in human history. Its imagery spans across numerous ancient civilizations, esoteric traditions, and mystical practices, most notably in Hermeticism, Freemasonry, ancient Egyptian mythology, and even Christian iconography. To truly grasp the significance of the All-Seeing Eye, one must delve into its deep symbolism, which touches on themes of divine consciousness, enlightenment, hidden knowledge, and the interconnection of all things.
The All-Seeing Eye as a Symbol of Divine Consciousness
At its core, the All-Seeing Eye represents the omniscient and omnipresent nature of divine consciousness—what some may call God, the Source, or Universal Mind. The eye is often depicted within a triangle or a radiating light, signifying an elevated state of awareness that transcends physical existence. In Hermetic thought, God is not viewed as a separate creator but as the essence of all things, the underlying consciousness from which all forms emerge. The eye symbolizes this ever-present awareness, always watching, always knowing, embodying the truth that nothing in the universe escapes the attention of this eternal force.
In this context, the All-Seeing Eye can be likened to the Eye of God, watching over creation and reminding us that we are all manifestations of this one, divine consciousness. This fits closely with the Hermetic principle of "The All is Mind"—the universe and everything within it is a mental construct, and at the highest level, this mind is the mind of God, or the All. The All-Seeing Eye represents this divine intelligence, reminding us of our unity with it, and our connection to the infinite.
Enlightenment and Awakening
The All-Seeing Eye also speaks to the idea of awakening and enlightenment, both spiritual and intellectual. In esoteric traditions, the eye represents the third eye, the inner eye that sees beyond physical reality. It represents the ability to perceive higher truths that are hidden from the ordinary, waking consciousness.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, the Eye of Horus is one of the clearest examples of this symbolic connection. It was believed to have protective, healing powers and to confer wisdom. The ancient Egyptians associated this eye with both the sun (the right eye of Horus) and the moon (the left eye of Horus), symbolizing the unification of masculine and feminine forces, light and dark, conscious and subconscious.
In this sense, the All-Seeing Eye can be seen as a metaphor for inner vision, the process of self-realization in which one becomes aware of the deeper spiritual truths of existence. When someone "opens their third eye," they begin to see beyond the illusions of the material world and understand the interconnected nature of all life.
This ties into the hermetic teachings, which encourage seekers to rise above the physical senses and engage with the world of spirit, to recognize that the truth lies beyond appearances.
The All-Seeing Eye serves as a reminder to cultivate this deeper form of sight, not just with our physical eyes but with the eye of the soul, allowing us to access the higher wisdom that lies within.
Hidden Knowledge and Occult Wisdom
Throughout history, the All-Seeing Eye has been adopted by various secret societies and mystical orders, most notably Freemasonry, where it often appears on the regalia, architecture, and symbols used in its rites. Here, it serves as a symbol of hidden knowledge and the journey toward spiritual illumination. Freemasons interpret the All-Seeing Eye as a representation of the "Great Architect of the Universe," the Masonic concept of a divine being who designed all of creation according to sacred geometric principles.
The fact that the All-Seeing Eye is often depicted at the apex of a pyramid is also significant. The pyramid itself is a symbol of the spiritual ascent—a process of moving from the base, which represents the material world and the human condition, up toward the pinnacle, symbolizing spiritual awakening, unity with the divine, and the acquisition of higher knowledge. The eye atop the pyramid sees all, symbolizing that nothing is hidden from divine truth or the quest for enlightenment.
In this regard, the All-Seeing Eye is also a symbol of initiation. In ancient mystery schools and initiatory traditions, individuals underwent a process of self-transformation, wherein they were gradually led toward the light of understanding. To "see" with the All-Seeing Eye meant to possess a wisdom that goes beyond superficial knowledge, a direct understanding of the mysteries of the universe. It is said that those who are truly enlightened are those who have learned to "see" with this eye.
The Eye in Modern Context: Control or Liberation?
In the modern era, the All-Seeing Eye has also come to be associated with conspiracy theories, often linked to the idea of surveillance, control, and hidden agendas. On the U.S. dollar bill, for example, the eye atop the pyramid has been interpreted by some as a symbol of the New World Order, a secret elite governing the world from behind the scenes. Whether one subscribes to such theories or not, the symbol has undeniably taken on a dual meaning in the modern psyche: it represents both spiritual illumination and worldly control.
This dichotomy mirrors a deeper truth about spiritual symbols in general: they can be used for purposes of liberation or manipulation. On one hand, the eye can serve as a reminder that we are all part of the divine plan, that nothing is beyond the reach of cosmic intelligence. On the other, it can represent the growing mechanisms of surveillance, societal control, and the materialistic forces that seek to keep humanity in ignorance, cut off from their divine source.
In this sense, the All-Seeing Eye is a reflection of both light and shadow. It reveals that every symbol has a dual nature, one that depends on the intention behind its use. In the hands of those seeking enlightenment, the eye is a path to freedom and understanding. In the hands of those seeking dominion, it becomes a tool for control and suppression.
The Hermetic Perspective: Seeing Beyond the Illusion
In Hermeticism, the All-Seeing Eye is not just a symbol of external power or divine oversight; it represents the ability to see beyond the illusion—the veil that separates us from understanding the true nature of reality. This resonates deeply with the idea that the world we perceive is but a shadow of a much grander, hidden truth. The material world is seen as a temporary illusion, a stage upon which we play our roles. The true reality lies beyond, in the realm of the spirit.
For those who embrace the Hermetic worldview, the All-Seeing Eye serves as a reminder to look within and seek the eternal truth that lies beyond the ephemeral. It is a call to use intuition and discernment, to pierce through the layers of deception, division, and distraction that dominate the physical world.
The eye that sees all does not just represent external oversight; it is the inner eye, the third eye of perception that connects us to the infinite and reminds us that we, too, are part of the divine source, part of the universal mind. It teaches that through wisdom, discernment, and the development of our own consciousness, we can transcend the illusions of the physical world and come to understand the ultimate reality that unites us all.
Conclusion
The All-Seeing Eye is a symbol steeped in ancient wisdom, esoteric significance, and profound spiritual meaning. It represents divine consciousness, the quest for enlightenment, and the acquisition of hidden knowledge. Whether viewed as the eye of the divine watching over creation or as a metaphor for our own spiritual awakening, the All-Seeing Eye remains a powerful reminder of the unity between the physical and the metaphysical, the seen and the unseen.
Ultimately, the eye symbolizes our journey toward greater awareness, a journey that invites us to see beyond the illusion and recognize the eternal, interconnected nature of all things. Whether it be through the Hermetic teachings, Masonic wisdom, or ancient myths, the All-Seeing Eye serves as a beacon, guiding us toward the light of truth that lies within each of us.
