Wet Beast Wednesday: moray eels
This week on Wet Beast Wednesday I'll be going over something amazing, a fish with a sense of morality. You see, the moral eel is known for, what... I think I'm reading this wrong. Oh, MoRAY eel, not moral. Well this is awkward. Hang tight, I need to go redo my research.
(Image: a green moray (Gymnothorax funebris) swimming outside of its burry, with its whole body visible from the side. It is a long, slender fish that looks a bit like a snake. A long fin starts just below the head and continues down the length of the body. The body is arranged in a wave pattern. It has a pointed snout and small eyes. Its body is a yellow-green color. In the background is the sandy seafloor, dotted with various sponges and corals. End ID)
Moray eels are true eels, meaning they are in the order Anguiliformes. Yeah, I did wolf eels, electric eels, and lamprey eels before I got around to actual eels. There are over 200 known species of moray eel in 15 genera. Like other eels, they are elongated bony fish with extra vertebrae and reduced fins. Moray eels have fewer fins than most eel species, only having a dorsal, anal and tail fin that merge together and run down the back of most of the body and underneath portion of it. They achieve motion by undulating this long fin and sometimes undulating the rest of the body as well. Moray eels aren't the fastest of fish, but they can swim backwards, something almost no fish can. The head has a long snout with wide jaws. Most species have long fangs used to grab onto prey, but a few species are adapted to eat hard-shelled prey and have molar-like teeth to crush through shells instead. Probably the coolest feature of morays are the pharyngeal jaws. This is a second set of jaws located in the back of the mouth. When the eel bites onto prey, the jaws can be shot forward to grab the food and help pull it into the throat. While lots of fish have pharyngeal jaws, morays are the only ones who can extend their pharyngeal jaws forward and use them to grab prey. Morays have smooth, scaleless skin that is often patterned to provide camouflage. The skin is coated in mucus that provides protection from damage and infection. In some species, the mucus can be used to glue sand together to help reinforce burrows. Morays lack lateral lines, a system of organs found in most fish that senses changes in water movement. Their sense of smell is their primary sense. The size of morays varies between species. The smallest species is the dwarf moray eel (Gymnothorax melatremus) which reaches 26 cm (10 in) long. The largest species by mass is the giant moray eel (Gymnothorax javanicus) which can reach 3 meters (10 ft) and 30 kg (66 lbs) while the longest species is the slender giant moray (Strophidon sathete), the longest known specimen of which measured in at 3.94 m (12.9 ft).

Moray eels are found throughout the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian oceans. Different species are found in different temperatures and depths, though most species live in relatively shallow, warm water. Several species can live in brackish water and a few will swim upriver and live for a time in fresh water, though there do not appear to be any species that live their entire lives in fresh water. Morays are ambush predators who rely on the element of surprise. They live in small, tight places such as holes in coral, gaps between rocks, or sandy burrows. When prey passes, the eel can lunge out and grab it. Unlike most fish, the eel cannot use suction feeding due to the shapes of their mouths. They have to rely on lunging froward and catching prey with their mouths. Their mouths are adapted in shape to push water to the sides. This reduces water resistance and avoids creating a wave that could push prey away from the eel. If an eel catches prey that cannot be swallowed whole, it will tie itself in a knot while biting on to the food. By pulling its head through the loop, the eel can rip the food into bite-sized pieces. Spending most of their times in burrows also provides protection from predators, especially in juveniles or smaller species. At night, the eels will come out of their burrows to hunt sleeping prey while the larger predators are asleep. Giant morays have also been seen engaging in interspecies cooperative hunting with roving coral groupers (Plectropomus pessuliferus). The eels can fit into small crevices the groupers can't to flush prey into the grouper's path while catching their own. Morays are mostly solitary species and many can be territorial. They are known to be shy and will retreat into their burrows if they feel threatened. They are also curious and many species are quite intelligent.
(Image: a male ribbon eel (Rhinomuraena quaesita) on a coral reef. It is a very long and slender eel with its body curved in many waves. It is brightly colored, with a blue-purple body, yellow fin and face, and a long black and white stripe running down the back half of the body. On the nostrils are two feather-like structures. End ID)
Morays reproductive strategies are poorly known and differ based on species. While many species seem to have no set mating season and will reproduce whenever they can, others will mate at the same time every year. Some species seem to have dedicated spots to lay their eggs and a few are believed to be anadromous, meaning they travel from the sea to fresh water to spawn. Meanwhile, some of the species that spend a lot of time in fresh water are catadromous, meaning they return to sea to mate. Females will lay their eggs and the male fertilize them. After this, they depart, providing no parental care. As with all true eels, moray eels begin life as leptocephalus larvae. This type of fish larvae is notable for its resemblance to a simple, transparent leaf with a head on one end. These larvae are unique and poorly understood, despite being the larval stage of a lot of different species of fish. They are unusually well developed for larvae, capable of active swimming and generally living life. In fact, some particularly large leptocephalus larvae were initially mistaken for adult fish. They feed mostly on bits of drifting organic material called marine snow and can remain in the larval stage for up to 3 years, with those in colder conditions usually taking longer to metamorphose. All leptocephalus larvae start out with no sex organs, then develop female organs, then develop male ones, becoming simultaneous hermaphrodites. They will ultimately become eith male or female and it is likely that environmental factors are the main determining factor. During metamorphosis into a juvenile, the leptocephalus can reduce in size by up to 90%, resulting in the juvenile being smaller than the larva. The process of maturation is poorly understood, but it seems that most morays will be sexually mature by three years of age.
(Image: multiple photos of a particularly large leptocephalus larva (not sure what species). It is a translucent organis, wth a body shaped like a very long leaf, narrow at both ends. In the frint is a very tiny head. End ID)
Morays are shy and generally avoid humans. Though some cultures have hunted them for food, they are often not considered a particularly good food source. Many species have high levels of chemicals called ciguatoxins in their bodies, which can lead to a condition called ciguatera fish poisoning if eaten. The largest threat to morays is habitat loss. This is especially true for the many species that live in coral reefs, which are in increasing danger due to global warming. Attacks on humans are rare and usually happen as a response to a human sticking their hand in the eel's burrow. Some of the large species could cause significant damage with a bite. Some species, usually the smaller ones, are found in the aquarium trade, thought they are not good pets for beginners as even the smallest morays are still large for aquarium fish and have some specific requirements. The curiosity many morays have has led to some becoming familiar with and even friendly to humans, often the result of feeding them. They can recognize individual humans and remember them over the course of years. Aquarium employees sometimes report that the eels will come to nuzzle and play with them and have personalities like dogs. Marine biologists and professional SCUBA divers Ron and Valorie Taylor befriended a pair of eels they named Harry and Fang at the Great Barrier Reef who would remember them and come out to visit them year after year.

hey there I would love to see your ideas for this:
”Gothic horror Maidar set during Morgoth's imprisonment in the Halls of Mandos”
Thank you, @gingeragenda 🖤 I had a lot of fun writing this.
I took the opportunity to have a go at the Our Winterfeast prompt: Haunted
There's nothing explicit in this, but Adar is very much mind-prisoned, so cw for psychological torture and compulsive behaviour.
The Ghost of Angband
Each time Adar awoke, he lined up thirteen pebbles. That morning, or day, or night (it was impossible to tell this far beneath the earth), was no different. He arranged them in order of size, from smallest to largest, left to right. They clacked against each other as he worked. He did his best to replicate the same volume and tone with each pebble. It always took some time to get it just right. A particular pattern of markings needed to be lined up correctly across the pebbles. These rules were self-imposed but critically important, though, he could not recall why.
Once the pebbles were satisfactorily laid out, he tapped each one against the stone floor. For each pebble, he spoke a name. For each name, he pictured a face. The last name and face was his own. He then repeated the process thirteen times. Adar could not remember who the other names and faces belonged to. They were spectres of a past life, tangled in the frayed edges of his mind. It had been this way for quite some time, but through this ritual, he grasped onto the scraps of what had been.
On this occasion, something was amiss. The names felt strange in his mouth. Each vowel was sticky against his tongue, and the faces were not quite right. Even his own name sounded strange to his ears, and he was sure his eyes had not always been quite so far apart. He wondered if this change, this disruption, could be an ill omen, or was he jumping at shadows again? Someone used to tease him for his superstitions. Their laughter rang in his ears. Soft and bright, like tinkling bells.
Adar stood up and moved over to the jagged mirror shard that hung on the wall. The light in his quarters was dim, but his eyes were well used to the gloom. Tarnished dark splotches obscured his reflection, but he could make out a face, his face. It was as he remembered it. Wasn’t it? There were his grey eyes, his scarred cheeks, his sullen brow. For a few minutes, he stared at his features, waiting to catch them shifting. But they held firm. He sighed and ran a comb through his hair thirteen times, reciting the names with each stroke, until it was slicked back and tucked behind his ears. With a deep breath, he told himself that all was well, then dressed.
He wore a long black robe with voluminous sleeves that gathered at cuffs of a deep shade of red, embroidered with silver flames. A matching band ran around the garment’s waist. Each time he went to sleep he folded the robe away in a chest. Each time he awoke he found it draped over the end of his bed. Many times he tried to stay awake to see who it was that moved it, but heavy slumber always descended upon him before he had the chance. Eventually, he gave up trying. Though he continued to put the robe in the chest each night. He would not let his routine be disrupted by mysterious forces.
As he fastened his dagger belt around his hips, a flash of red moved in his peripheral vision. His eyes darted to the entrance. His quarters had no door, those were reserved for servants of higher rank. All he saw was the carved archway and the empty corridor beyond. His fingers tightened around the jewel-encrusted hilt of his dagger. Another flash of red caught his eye. He looked down at his sleeve cuff. Red. That must have been it. He held his breath, counted thirteen heartbeats, then exhaled. With his nerves settled, he stepped out into the corridor.
Adar skulked through Angband. Cold flames cast gyrating shadows against the high stone walls. His footsteps echoed around him, cutting through the heavy silence. It gave the illusion that he walked among many others. While he was certain it had not always been the case, Angband was now deserted. Adar would not abandon his duty, however. Melkor rescued him from unspeakable horrors so he would wait patiently for his master’s return. Perhaps when the Dark Lord returned, he would be rewarded for his loyalty. How long had it been now? Adar could not be sure. The passing of time was strange in Angband. Years slipped through his fingers like smoke.
The sprawling subterranean fortress was far too large to cover even one level in a single day. He tried it once but passed out on the cold stone floor and awoke in his bed. He supposed he could have walked back in his sleep, but the possibility that he had been carried deterred him from straying too far. It was dangerous to show weakness here, even if he had not seen another living soul in quite some time.
Sometimes there would be a sudden blistering heat or frigid chill as he passed through the corridors. Each time it occurred, he checked the walls and floors for gaps through which a draught could blow. Even if he did manage to find a hole, the temperature difference was never enough to explain the phenomenon. Still, he would always go and collect rubble to fill in the cracks.
Occasionally he witnessed streaks of greyish-green colours that hung in the air. They twisted off into the distance or sprang towards him. Sometimes he thought he could make out faces. There was a familiarity to them that caused an uncomfortable tugging sensation at his sternum. It was as if they were messengers from beyond, ghosts of a forgotten past, or portents of doom.
Adar came to the throne room. It was a colossal chamber with a ceiling so high it could not be made out through the darkness. Large obsidian pillars were evenly spaced throughout. At the far end of the chamber was an enormous throne of ornately carved stone that sat atop a high dias. A smaller throne sat to the left of the larger. It was made from intricate gilded metalwork. Adar could not recall who it belonged to, but for a moment, he thought he caught a glimpse of a figure sitting upon it. He tapped his forefinger against his thumb thirteen times, muttering the names and recalling the faces, then surveyed the throne room. It was vacant. All was still.
“Adar,” a voice rang out sweetly. Strangely, it did not echo.
“Hello?” Adar’s reply bounced up the walls and disappeared into the gloom.
He could not remember the last time he heard a voice that was not his own. He remained still, ears keenly listening for any sound of movement. All he heard was the thumping of his heart. He took thirteen careful steps forward, then stopped again to listen.
“Adar,” this time the voice came as a whisper inside his skull.
A sharp pain stabbed at his eyes. He winced and blinked it away. His vision blurred into a gloomy swirl of dark stone and torchlight, then coalesced into a beautiful face.
The being’s visage was so bright, it burned to look upon them, but Adar endured. He could not bear to shut his eyes and deny himself the sight. So he stood there, frozen in awe, as the being reached out a hand and tilted up his chin. The touch sent a shiver through Adar as he looked up into eyes that glowed like embers.
“Do you remember me?” the being asked.
“No,” Adar breathed. He could not imagine being acquainted with a being of such sublimity.
“A pity,” the being replied with a sigh. “No matter, I have come to rescue you from your torment.”
“I-,” Adar stammered, “I do not require rescue.”
“Is that so?” the being’s full lips twisted into a smirk, “Look around you, Adar, does nothing seem amiss?”
Adar’s eyes darted about the throne room. “Where is everyone?” he asked in a low voice.
“That is not the question you should ask,” the being replied.
It did not take Adar long to think of a response. He had a wealth of questions and a dearth of answers.
“Where am I?” he asked again, louder this time.
“Well done,” the being praised, brushing their thumb against Adar’s cheek, “You are trapped. Not quite here, not quite gone. It is in my power to free you, but I require something in return.”
Adar took a shuddering breath. He could not think what he had done to deserve such a mercy.

omg 😭 well if I do write it it’ll be on ao3
Btw what are your favourite akaboku tropes?? Been wondering for a while now
😭😭😭😭😭 PLEASE send me when you have posted it🤲🤲🤲 (It's been a really long time since I search for AkaBoku fanfics on AO3 since im always coming out disapointed there's not enough Top!Akaaashi and Bottom!Bokuto that's why we never reach the total world peace💔)
Let's see!! My all time favorite trope is unrequited love but it's actually requited. Akaashi always thought that Bokuto was too bright, he belonged to everyone, that his love couldn't fullfil him and it was best he kept it all to himself, he could and would devoted all of his to Bokuto without a need for something back, but his love just kept getting bigger and it was suffocating him, his heart beating painfully whenever he saw Bokuto a little too close with someone else. All the meanwhile, Bokuto had it all figured out because he was a more sensitive person than you thought, but he still waited for Akaashi to confess, as he always told Akaashi if he felt emotions, he should express it out, if he wanted something, he should go for it (this was inspired from the time he told Kiryuu don't hesitate to demand better passes from his teammates). But seeing Akaashi painfully holding it all like that, he confessed first, but like "I know you really really love me, I really really love you too, let's hang out this weekend, I want to try out this new sweetshop near my house!" Akaashi cried really hard that day and in his sobbing he tried to explained himself why he couldn't bring himself to confess first, that he was not worth his love and soon they would break up and he would be too heartbreak he would kill himself but then who would take care of Bokuto for him so it was best they didn't date and Bokuto had to spend the entire evening to explain and sooth him down that he was beyond loved and deserved to be loved.
Another one is they start to adopt each other's habits and behaviors, Akaashi expresses his emotions less emotionless :))))), Bokuto arranges money in order of value from smallest to largest for easy control, Akaashi stops to pet dogs on the street, Bokuto cleans the chopsticks with paper towel before using it, Akaashi buys 2 in case if Bokuto wants one (he always wants one) , Bokuto buys any trinket that remind him of Akaashi and sometimes tries to read the books Akaashi reads (he couldn't understand a bit so he makes Akaashi to read and explain everything to him),....
Is this counted as a trope but another one is Akaashi is the jealous and controlling one in the relationship which is so hard for him when Bokuto gaining more fan once he becomes a pro that he always has a violent urge to claim him every time he sees fans and reporters surrounding him
I can make this 10k words but deadline is dealining so i'll see you again!!

Metatron's Cube and Natural Patterns

Alright, let’s take a breather from the mystical side of things and talk about how Metatron’s Cube is connected to the natural world. It’s not just some abstract symbol—it’s a reflection of patterns you can see all around you. There’s this idea called sacred geometry, which basically means certain shapes and proportions repeat over and over again in nature, from the tiniest cell to massive galaxies. And Metatron’s Cube? It’s like a master key to these patterns.

What Is Sacred Geometry?
The term “sacred geometry” might sound intense, but all it means is that nature uses specific geometric shapes as its building blocks. Metatron’s Cube is a great example of this—it’s packed with the Platonic solids, which are five shapes that ancient thinkers believed made up everything in the universe. Here’s a quick rundown of those shapes:
Tetrahedron: Four triangular faces (symbolizes fire) Hexahedron (Cube): Six square faces (earth) Octahedron: Eight triangular faces (air) Dodecahedron: Twelve pentagonal faces (ether/spirit) Icosahedron: Twenty triangular faces (water)
These shapes are special because they show up everywhere—from ancient philosophy to modern science. And, of course, they’re all part of Metatron’s Cube, making it not just a spiritual tool but a representation of how the universe is structured.
Where You Can Find Sacred Geometry in Nature
So, how does this all connect to nature? Metatron’s Cube isn’t just a random design—it mirrors how things naturally form in the world.
Cell Division and the Flower of Life — When a single cell divides, it follows a specific pattern. The early stages of cell division look a lot like the Flower of Life, another sacred geometric shape that’s directly tied to Metatron’s Cube. You’ve got this repeating, interconnected circle design, which eventually forms the framework for the Cube itself.
Hexagons in Crystals and Snowflakes — If you’ve ever looked closely at a snowflake or the way crystals form, you’ve seen sacred geometry in action. Crystals like quartz tend to form in hexagonal shapes, just like the ones you’ll find in Metatron’s Cube. Snowflakes, with their six-point symmetry, are another example of nature using these geometric rules.
Spirals and the Golden Ratio — Spirals show up everywhere—from the swirls in a seashell to the way galaxies spin. A lot of these spirals follow the Fibonacci sequence or Golden Ratio, which are closely related to sacred geometry. These spirals represent balance and natural growth, and you can trace their patterns back to Metatron’s Cube.
Plant Growth and Symmetry — Many flowers have petals arranged in Fibonacci sequences—3, 5, 8, 13 petals, for example. That’s sacred geometry in action. Plants grow in ways that follow these universal patterns because it’s efficient and balanced. The same symmetry is built into Metatron’s Cube.
The Structure of the Universe — Even at the largest scale, we see sacred geometry. The way galaxies cluster together, the way planets orbit, all follow geometric principles. Metatron’s Cube can be seen as a model for these cosmic patterns—it’s a way of understanding the flow of energy from the smallest atom to the largest star.
Why Metatron's Cube Matters
Metatron’s Cube reminds us that the world isn’t just random—it’s deeply connected through these patterns. When you look at it, you’re not just seeing lines and circles; you’re seeing a map of how everything works. Sacred geometry ties the material world to the spiritual, showing that what we see here on Earth mirrors something much bigger.
People who meditate on Metatron’s Cube do so because it helps them align with these universal patterns. It’s like syncing up with the natural order. Whether you’re just appreciating the design or using it for spiritual growth, it serves as a bridge between you and the larger forces at play.
Using Metatron's Cube for Balance and Healing
A lot of folks use sacred geometry—and specifically Metatron’s Cube—as a tool for healing. The idea is that since these geometric forms are the blueprint for the universe, they can also help you realign your own energy.

The Cube (Hexahedron) represents the earth and can help you feel grounded and stable.

The Tetrahedron (fire) is about igniting passion or drive.
The Octahedron (air) brings balance and clarity to your thoughts and emotions.
The Icosahedron (water) helps with emotional flow and flexibility.

The Dodecahedron (ether/spirit) is connected to spiritual growth and insight.
By focusing on these shapes, whether during meditation or as part of energy work, you’re essentially bringing yourself back into balance with the natural world. These shapes are everywhere, from the structure of crystals to the way plants grow, so tuning into them can help align your inner world with the outer world.

BIO-
rumors always seemed to follow artorias, even as a child. he's a problem. the black sheep. whispers would circulate among the court-he's after the throne. best keep an eye on that one.
while some rumors held a degree of truth to them-a fight started here, a ruined marriage over there-artorias never had his eye on the throne. causing the occasional scandal? certainly. but ruling the kingdom was a burden that he was quite content to let his brother shoulder. he looked at the throne and saw chains-more responsibility than anything else.
in truth, artorias' gaze was turned upwards-to the skies. to the dragons and those who would ride them. not just for the freedom and certainly not for the honor of it-but for the power. it wouldn't come easy, he had no illusions about the academy and the risks it posed, but that didn't sway him. not for a single moment. and he clawed his way to the top, seemingly eager to prove something to someone.
he wanted to prove that he was more than the prince who lived in his brother's shadow. that he could gain something on his own merit. and gain something he did.
vraxiirys-crimson scales that held the faintest glint of gold in the sunlight. eyes of fire and a gaze as sharp as their fangs. while not the smallest dragon, they were a far cry from the largest. but what they lacked in sheer size? they made up for in speed and battle prowess. weaving and slicing their way through a battlefield as easily as a sharpened blade, they are a warrior through and through. a perfect bond between rider and dragon, the two are seldom at odds with each other.
while it was hardly a requirement for a royal, artorias joined the ranks of the dracovlăst, finding that he was far more comfortable on a battlefield than in the court. and it suited his brother just fine-he was quite content to send artorias and his scandals far from home.
as a soldier, his status as a dragon rider and his skill on the battlefield helped insure a swift and steady climb up the ranks and artorias quickly made a name for himself. cunning and brutal, he was unafraid to make necessary sacrifices to seize a victory--the story of how artorias ordered his own dragon to rain fire on his enemy while surrounded quickly spread-reaching his brother's ears. it was after such a risky play that he was called back home after serving only six years.
many saw the move to bring artorias back to valachia as lucien being concerned for his brother's well-being. artorias knew better. his wings were being clipped before artorias could become a threat to lucien.
years passed and it didn't take long for the rumors to return once artorias was back home. many servants would gossip about the arguments between brothers that would occur in the halls of draconia keep.
and then one day nearly ten years ago-artorias vanished. vraxiirys with him. and once again, rumors circulated valachia. a call back to battle. an argument that resulted in brother abandoning brother. banishment. death. whatever the reason, artorias and his dragon were gone. and lucien's problems seemed to lessen.
years passed and many moved on with their lives, there would be the occasional whisper that the lost prince was spotted with his dragon, but nothing ever seemed to come of such sightings.
it wasn't until a month ago, during a summoning of the king's small council, that the cry of a dragon shook draconia keep. a dragon that flashed across the night sky as if it were a shooting star. and through the grand doors of the hall walked artorias. as if nothing had happened. as if he was only seen mere hours ago-not years.
brothers disappeared behind closed doors, the conversation that took place known only to them. but it would seem artorias would be staying in valachia. with some conditions-including the betrothal arranged by lucien.
nobody knows just why artorias has returned, whether it is of his own volition or by summon of the king. he has been seen around the court and occasionally at his brother's side, yet has no official position on the small council. since his return, artorias has walked the halls of the keep as though he holds all the cards, and yet no one seems to know what game he is playing.
#nights.intro#artorias.intro#//you do not want to know how much of this was just me trying to figure out what to name the dragon

From the Smithsonian History explorer, Fresnel Lighthouse Lens:
In 1822, French scientist Augustin-Jean Fresnel was studying optics and light waves. He discovered that by arranging a series of lenses and prisms into the shape of a beehive, the strength of lighthouse beams could be improved. His lens—known as the Fresnel lens—diffused light into beams that could be visible for miles. Fresnel designed his lenses in several different sizes, or orders. The first order lens, meant for use in coastal lighthouses, was the largest and the strongest lens. The sixth order lens was the smallest, designed for use in small harbors and ports. By the 1860s, all of the lighthouses in the United States were fitted with Fresnel lenses.
(they are absolutely a kind of magic)
If you're in the need for some kind of magical artifact of magic for your setting, consider Fresnel Lenses which are used in lighthouses:

These things are Alive.

5 Tips for Functional Small Kitchen Cabinets

When it comes to small kitchen cabinets, we know how crucial it is to maximize every inch for functionality. We can implement strategies like pull-out drawers and adjustable shelving to make our spaces more efficient. By grouping similar items and using clear containers, we not only organize but also enhance our cooking experience. And let’s not forget about utilizing vertical space with open shelves. But what are the specific techniques that can turn these ideas into reality? Let’s explore these practical tips and see how they can transform our kitchens.
Maximize Vertical Space

When we think about optimizing small kitchen cabinets, maximizing vertical space is a game changer. In small kitchens, every inch matters, and utilizing height can significantly enhance our storage solutions.
We can install open shelves that reach up to the ceiling, creating a perfect spot for infrequent items like seasonal dishes or cookbooks. Adding hooks or peg boards on the walls allows us to hang pots, pans, and utensils, keeping them within easy reach while freeing up valuable counter space.
Additionally, tall cabinets are an excellent way to store items without taking up floor space, while pull-out shelves can help us access those hard-to-reach items in the back.
By grouping similar items together and employing clear containers, we not only stay organized but also maintain a tidy appearance. Consider adjustable shelving as well, which accommodates varying sizes of kitchen essentials, making it easier to maximize vertical space effectively.
With these strategies, we can transform our small kitchens into functional and organized cooking havens, ensuring that every vertical inch is put to good use.
Utilize Pull-Out Drawers

Pull-out drawers can revolutionize the way we use our small kitchen cabinets, transforming cluttered spaces into organized havens. By incorporating pull-out storage, we can maximize storage potential and create additional space for our essentials. This smart storage solution makes it easier to access items that usually linger at the back of our cabinets, improving our workflow and efficiency.
Here’s a quick comparison of pull-out drawers versus traditional cabinet storage:
Group Similar Items

Organizing our small kitchen cabinets becomes much easier when we group similar items together. By creating categories based on shape, use, or size, we can streamline our storage and enhance our kitchen’s organization.
For instance, let’s categorize items into bowls, casseroles, and food storage containers. This not only makes it visually appealing but also functional.
Once we’ve grouped similar items, we should arrange them logically. Nesting casseroles from largest to smallest helps us utilize space efficiently. We can also place larger food storage containers at the back and smaller ones in front, ensuring we maintain both accessibility and aesthetic order.
Furthermore, let’s prioritize proximity. We should store frequently used items, like lunchbox containers and everyday bowls, closest to the front for easy access. Meanwhile, less frequently used items can go in harder-to-reach areas.
Use Clear Storage Containers

Clear storage containers are a game changer for our small kitchen cabinets, making it effortless to see what we’ve on hand. By using these containers, we can enhance our kitchen organization and maximize our available space. They help us keep pantry items visible and accessible, which ultimately reduces clutter.
Here are some benefits of using clear storage containers:
Easy visibility: We can quickly identify contents without rummaging through cabinets.
Vertical storage: Stackable containers allow us to use our vertical space efficiently.
Grouping similar items: Clear containers help us categorize and maintain order in our kitchen.
Stylish and functional: They create a tidy appearance that complements our kitchen design.
Incorporating clear storage into our cabinets not only helps us find what we need faster but also encourages us to keep everything organized.
We can regularly check our pantry items and ensure that nothing goes to waste. Overall, clear storage containers are essential for anyone looking to improve kitchen organization and make the most of their small kitchen cabinets.
Install Adjustable Shelving

One of the best ways to enhance the functionality of our small kitchen cabinets is by installing adjustable shelving. This simple upgrade can transform our kitchen space, allowing us to accommodate various sizes of pots, pans, and other essentials.
To start, we’ll need a drill, a shelf pin jig, and some sturdy plywood for our shelves.
First, we should use the shelf pin jig to drill evenly spaced holes along the cabinet sides. This ensures that our adjustable shelving can be set at different heights, making it easy to customize the layout based on our needs. Remember to lightly sand the holes to prevent any rough edges.
Next, we can install shelf pins, using four per shelf for stability. It’s crucial to select the right size—typically ¼" pins work best in many applications.
Once we’ve chosen our shelving material and cut it to fit, we’ll simply place the shelves on the pins for immediate use.
With adjustable shelving in place, we’ll not only maximize our kitchen space but also create an organized, accessible environment that fits our cooking habits!

Organised Chaos

My sweet little autistic!Pran and ADHD!Pat...
THE THING ABOUT PRAN is that he has a certain way of organising his life and its workings.
He is mostly shifting around his schedules so that he has equal time split between work, spending time with friends, having get-togethers with his mother and father, and spending time with his hyperactive golden retriever boyfriend. But it always ends up with him reaching a burnout — whether it be social or emotional, or both depending how hectic his schedule ends up being — by the end of the month from all that he tries to cram in. It is never ending.
He places out all of his pens, pencils, and markers in their respective groups and then arranges them by colour, but Pran has a habit of accidentally misplacing his fine markers used for sketching and ends up stealing one or more of Pat's less than ideal fine markers and never returning them. Much to his credit, Pat pretends not to notice how he catches Pran, lost in thought, chewing on the end of one of Pat's fine markers, finding the sight quite adorable — not that he will ever say that to Pran's face.
When Pran cleans the kitchen, the benches, oven, and stovetop almost sparkle in the sunlight, and the plates, glasses, coffee mugs, and bowls are all in neat piles in their designated places. The cutlery are so well polished and reflective that Pat has to squint when the light hits them at a certain angle, and the cooking utensils are perfectly spotless in their second drawer. Pots, pans, and all of the sort are stacked from largest to smallest where possible in the cupboards, and Pat rediscovers their matching drink bottles that had been buried at the back of the Tupperware cupboard.
While the tea towels are neatly folded in the third drawer, when Pat goes to get out a Ziplock bag from their bottom drawer, he is caught off guard by the junk that overflows from the drawer the second that he manages to get it unstuck. Eyes blinking in disbelief, Pat can't quite comprehend the chaos, because, in his mind, Pran couldn't possibly leave something so messy — especially not when his life revolves around order and organisation.
Nevertheless, Pat sits on the floor and tries to organise the chaos, only to find out that the drawer is stuffed full of all sorts of bits and pieces — some of which don't even belong in their kitchen, and some of which have seen much better days. Overall, it takes him a good hour to sort out the mess, in between breaks where he gets quite easily sidetracked by other menial tasks, and he grins to himself as he looks down at the more organised drawer.
Of course, he completely forgets what he went into the drawer looking for in the first place, only to remember in the middle of the night and scare the shit out of Pran when Pat's head thumps against the wooden headboard. Pran doesn't seem overly concerned about the mess that was the bottom drawer in their kitchen that Pat sorted out, only shrugging and mumbling something about it being nothing more than the junk drawer where everything gets shoved.
That being said, nothing could quite prepare Pat for their bedroom.
"Puppy, could you grab a hoodie for me?" Pran yells from the lounge room, hunched over his desk and glaring down at the ghastly schematics in front of him. It's taken him weeks to get it right for the client, and, while they are satisfied with his work, Pran feels sick just looking at it. "Just grab one from the cupboard."
Fondly rolling his eyes, Pat climbs off the bed and opens their wardrobe, only for a pile of precariously stashed clean clothes to spill out onto the bedroom floor. "Uh, baby... Come here for a sec."
"I swear, if you've got yourself stuck in—" Pran trails off when he sees the concerned expression on his boyfriend's face, dark eyes flickering between the guitarist and the pile of clothes on the floor. "Oh... Um..."
"Serious question, baby: are you okay?"
"What do you mean? Of course I'm okay."
"This isn't the first lot of...mess that I've found. You're usually so neat and particular, but sometimes..."
Pran leans against the door frame, a light redness colouring his cheeks. "It's just a bad habit. I just... Sometimes I don't have the mental capacity to put things away properly, and then it ends up getting a little out of hand. It's so embarrassing."
Pat's expression softens into something fond and adoring. "Oh, baby, it's okay. There's no need to be embarrassed. It's no worse than me starting to do something and getting halfway through it before starting something else — or even completely forgetting to do something when I go into a room to do that thing." He frowns, suddenly feeling as though he has seriously forgotten to do something. "Speaking of... I think I left the trash outside the front door. Someone had a dog."
Pran laughs. "Ai'Pat, you airhead. Give me a hoodie and then go take the trash downstairs, without getting distracted by a dog this time if at all possible. I'll clean up this mess and then we can watch a movie or a series. Okay, puppy?"
Pat grins widely. "Oh, you've got yourself a deal, baby."

Grokking Algorithms #2
This post covers the algorithm from Chapter 2, selection sort. Imagine you have a row of numbered billiard balls, arranged in a random order and you want to sort them in order from smallest to largest. You start by picking up the first ball and then move down the line, comparing each of the balls in the row to the one in your hand. As soon as you find one with a number smaller than the one…

Today I was tasked with editing some text based arrangements in order to make them more legible and appealing. I started off with an excerpt from a Sherlock Holmes novel. When I received this assignment I immediately noticed that the texture on the background would make any text harder to read. I asked my superior about it and they said the background absolutely must stay. Additionally, I was not allowed to change the color of the text. This made it rather challenging to differentiate the text from the speckled paper.
After all my limitations were established I began working on the body text. Since the body text was the biggest aspect of the graphic, I thought if I got that right, everything else would fall into place. I knew I wanted a sans serif font, this would make the text more readable. After picking one I also made the text slightly bigger. The dark specs on the page were especially noticeable when the text was smaller, making some letters look off compared to others. I also moved the text accordingly, making as few intersections as possible. Lastly for the body text, I indented the paragraphs, allowing for more separation and visibility.
After dealing with the body text, I moved on to the details. I ordered the book title, book part and chapter largest to smallest at the top of the page, using the same sans serif font I used for the body. I kept the source font as Times New Roman. This helped differentiate it as less vital than the main text.

The next piece I had to work on was an art nouveau article. The text was small and disconnected from their images. The text was also in Times New Roman, which certainly has a place in college research papers but not quite in this particular article. Once again I opted for a sans serif font for legibility and cohesion. Even though I was allowed to change text colors for this article, I decided against it for two reasons; one being that I was not allowed to change the background color. I find using colored text on a white background is too risky, the colors can easily be too light and/or too bright and can cause eyestrain. The second reason is consistency. Since this is an article that will be presented on a computer screen, the article would immediately be compared to all other online articles. To fit this mold, I wanted to keep the standard white background and black text.
Now it was time to arrange my composition. I had two images to work with, both with corresponding blurbs of text. I knew I did not want to change the size of the images, I felt making it bigger wasted space and making it smaller made the images harder to decipher. I put the images in opposite corners to keep my composition balanced. Next I made a shape in illustrator that went around the first image and put text inside of it. This made for an effective use of space and felt more dynamic than a square of text.

The next project was the most involved but also the most fun. I was told to create a wedding invitation almost entirely from scratch. All I was given was the text that had to be on the card. My superior told me to find all the assets myself and make a compelling layout. This proved challenging because I had almost nothing to work with. So I looked up example wedding invitations, almost all of which involved flowers in some way.
While looking for images to use, I found a free png of pink and blue flowers on pngtree.com. They were angled in such a way that I could put them in the corners of my design perfectly. I then used these flower decals as a reference to form my color palette.
Next I began working on my text. The type was, again, given to me in Times New Roman. Since many of the reference invitations had a flowy script font, that is what I chose for my design. I also wanted the letters to be big in this font, as I wanted to use this for the bride and groom's names. For the rest of the supplementary information, I went with a thinner, serif font. I wanted to keep the invite delicate and soft looking. However, I think the light pink may be hard to read on the light background. I made the text bigger but that only remedied it slightly. Overall I think this was a fun exercise, the seemingly endless freedom really let me express my creative freedom.

This was where I got the flowers

Australia Post Address Guidelines
Whenever you send mailers to a new country, there are specific guidelines you must follow to ensure the delivery of your mail. This is especially important when it comes to addresses, as the standard format differs from country to country. In order to accurately validate addresses for the Australian market, your address data must adhere to the standard formats specified by the country’s official postal service provider (e.g. USPS for the United States, Canada Post for Canadian addresses).
In Australia, the last line of the address is a locality name or suburb, state/territory and postcode. The locality name should be written in full, and the postcode must appear in the correct order. The city/town, state/territory and postcode components are arranged in the order of smallest to largest geographic locality.
If there is a flat, unit or apartment number in the address it should be indicated in the second line after the name of the recipient and company. If there is a suite or floor number it should be indicated in the third line, followed by a forward slash (/).
Those who wish to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of their area can do so by adding the traditional place name after their recipient’s name and before the street address, suburb or town. To find traditional names, you can look up a map from the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies or ask your local cultural centre.
