i personally headcanon Tom as a mad leftist. Alex told him all of this bullshit the government did to him against his will, and he rolled with it because what the fuck else was he supposed to do, and then a few days later his brain kicked in (or his year 6 'rights of the child' topic) and he was like 'wait.... that's super, super illegal' and he very carefully googled 'government comitting crimes?" and being a british teenager circa 2001 gets immediately hit with, like, a bunch of stuff about the middle east and corruption and the uk's disastrous last general election, and he's good enough at the internet to dig down into it. pre-radicalised with Alex's stuff, the anti-imperialism doesn't seem unreasonable, and being british he's probably been getting stuff about the Evils of Empire (in the abstract, past tense - i get that stuff as an aussie so they have to right?) for ages and it all just snowballs from there. it's only three steps to the actual books and he accidentally becomes a nerd because he finds it interesting. Alex is sort of like man stop telling me about the evils of imperialism you're making me feel bad about that time i did brownface to support a deeply evil refugee policy for an american stooge nation

Do you have any recommendations on how to learn bookbinding? It looks super cool, but I don't know where to start.

It depends on the type of bookbinding you want to get into, my focus is primarily on hardcover case bound books, so if that is what you are keen on, here are some resources that I found incredibly useful while learning:

YouTube

DAS bookbinding has a whole bunch of really detailed, professional tutorials that are incredibly useful. He covers multiple types of binds and techniques and they are all very easy to follow. (I always laugh when I watch his videos tho because he’s Aussie like me and he has the EXACT same shitty tiles in his workroom that I have in my house.)

Sea Lemon does bookbinding amongst other crafts, and while her videos are shorter and less in depth, they are very friendly for beginners and offer alternatives if you don’t have all the tools/equipment at home

Omgreylo is great for if you are doing fanbinding, she also has videos on typesetting, which is something you’ll want to learn too if you are planning on fanbinding. Her videos are also very chill and sometimes I’ll just watch them to relax because I’m a nerd.

Ingenious Designs has some really good videos on some more advanced skills like edge gilding and working with leather bound books. He’s also really charismatic so his videos are fun and informative.

I’m probably forgetting a few, but those channels have all been super useful. The other thing that I do and highly recommend is just browsing the bookbinding and fanbinding tags on tumblr, reddit and instagram to see what other people are doing. A lot of people (including myself when I finally remember to actually take pictures and record the process) will post progress photos alongside the finished project and will talk about the process. Most people are quite happy to answer any questions you might have about their projects too so don’t be afraid to ask.

Also the most important piece of advice I can give, if you are serious about bookbinding, GET YOURSELF SOME SHORT-GRAIN PAPER. It makes all the difference in terms of quality, ease of use, and durability.

Tyler tends to fall asleep first, as he's the one that's up at the ass crack of dawn and keeps himself so busy during the day that he's exhausted by the time settling down comes across. Which means Esme has to try and fall asleep with him snoring lol

He's up before or wth the sun. Everyone sleeps while he goes and works out or takes a run on the beach. Sometimes both.

Tyler is very carefee, Very Aussie. LOL. He has zero fucks to give and is the parent that lets the kids try anything and everything (with supervision, of course). Esme is more uptight in a lot of situations. And can be a little neurotic lol

Opposites definitely attract with these two! Esme is an extrovert and very bubbly and talkative. She's a social butterfly and loves to meet people and make friends. Tyler is a notorious introvert, that doesn't allow many people in his circle. He's also very much the 'strong, silent type; he doesn't say a lot, but when he does, he means every word. She is his wild, and he is her calm :)

Esme LOL. Always cold. Even in the dead of summer.

Esme discovered he either has full out OCD or OCD tendencies. And that he can't sit still; he finds it almost physically pain not to be moving all the time. And she found out he can play the guitar and is a very at drawing. Tyler discovered that Esme is a book nerd, she loves to garden, crochet, knit, and is an excellent baker. She is also neurotic AF at times lol

While they both tend to go to sleep at a decent time, Tyler wakes up a few times a night and will tend to business matters, shit around the house. Esme has to encourage him to come back to bed.

Esme isn't as anal about clealniness, but I'd say she tends to be a bit messier. Although she can be extremely organized!

Tyler can be a bit impulsive with decisions regarding 'the job', whereas she's more impulsive about things about the house, the things she enjoys doing (like gardening) or adding animals to their horde lol

They're an introverted couple. To an extent. Esme knows he isn't the social butterfly type and doesn't force him out of his comfort zone. But he will venture out of it for her if there's something she wants to attend.

That's a tough one. He's come a long way! But I'll give this one to Esme. She can even make him blush.

Tyler had to get used to it, as touch is her love language. She loves to receive and give affection. Esme is all for it and always has been lol

Esme, LOL. Tyler's a great driver (like shown in the movies) and can be totally trusted, but he can be a little on the wild side lol

Tyler has to be tipsy or full out drunk to flirt LOL. Esme is very awkward at it, but adorable at the same time lol

🌵- hmmmm opening up spotify for the first time in a hot min for this. Let me give you a link to the playlist that made me touch grass on my campus so i could get more steps in. Disporporitionaletly full of irish music but basically the vibes was to throw song against the wall and see if it had appropriate bounce or not. If it it hit me in the face and made me hit ground running, it made the cut.

🦴- ....The current document im working on has a very lemony snicket writing style because i read one (1) book from him (Posion for Breakfast), related so hard because we have very similar patterns of....speaking/attention/ig? Appearance: Young, around average height, stocky build with strong shoulders, and thick thighs. Shoulder length wave, dyed black, faded ends, green eyes. Wears glasses, prefers darker clothing varying from practical and comfortable to standard rock girl fare: boots, jeans, band shirt and jacket.

Occupation: Retail at a Outdoor and Hunting Store. (long story)

Family Members: Dad: Stephen, tragically and very recently deceased. (right in front of her). Mum: Alice. Alive but estranged but currently taking her daughter in. Also has secretive reasons for leaving that are plot/worldbuilding related. Paternal Uncle: Bazza (Benjamin), an absolute rough-nut of a human. Handles pest control on farms and shears sheep, helps manage livestock Kind of a nomad. Maternal Grandmother: Linda. Kat doesn't remember her Grandmother well or fondly. Might have something to do with that boatload of trauma.

Pets: Crocbait, knowns as Croc, Crocca, or "Absolute mongrel". Service dog for panic attacks, anxiety and PTSD and the like. Is a mutt, seems to be some combination of Blue Heeler (aussie cattle dog) and Labrador mix. The result is an energetic, friendly but fiercely protective companion that knows how to be adorable on demand.

Best friend: Back in Aus: Rachel - Roommate and bestie, athletic playing Netball on the weekends, degree in business and working at a call center to make ends meet. Taught Kat crotchet and his a small side business making crochet stuffies. In the US: Alex: Very neurodivergent, transman and just a practical nerd. Shoots for fun/hunting. Introvert, but sees a fellow outsider in Kat and offers the kind of friendship they wished they had. Strong problem solver and a stable rock.

Describe his/her room: More of a guest bedroom with en-suite upgraded. At one point her Mum hope she'd visit and use it so there's still some younger vibes, a few of Kat's favourite toys untouched for years and pale colours. Kat's touch is limited with darker bed spreads, personal photos and a books. It's early days yet and she isn't sure how long she's staying around.

Way of Speaking: Wry sarcasm, and quick wit, casual and slag filed until she's pissed off then it gets precise and impersonal and a little condescending. If it suddenly starts raining hard, she's likely to ask "Think it'll rain?" while getting soaking wet.

Physical characteristics (posture, gestures, attitude): Good posture, stims by rubbing her hands, along a scar from arrow fletching on her right hand. Jiggles her leg, bites her lip when anxious. Facial expressions tend to be subtle when she's not feeling something intense. Exudes physical confidence, holds herself upright, head high and a still developing "dont fuck with me" aura. Stares unintentionally. has the ADHD postural sway, and bumps into things a lot.

Talents, abilities, or powers: Scary good instinctive archer, pretty decent hunter. Fast reader, strong memory for information, facts and semi eidetic memory (visual memory which helps with her poor working memory). Fantastically calm in a crisis (just brace for the meltdown after).

Relationships (how he/she is with other people): Shy and cautious at first but friendly. Uses humour as a buffer, and presents herself as easy going and calm. You know you're getting close when you start seeing the dryer sarcasm, the grumpy moods and she drops the "just like everyone else" mask that can and has creeped people out. With her trusted people, she lets her neurodivergence fly and is a weird, somewhat temperamental nerd dealing with a lot of guilt, grief, and suicidal ideation.

Fears: Deep running water, car accidents as the passenger, large "trucks/utes". Flooded roads. Meltdowns in public.

Faults: Reactive and temperamental. Her well read, well learned background lends to arrogance and condescension. She's working on both. Overly independent to the point of self harm, and a little too self deprecating.

Good points: Passionate, compassionate and genuinely kind. Strong believer that everyone has their strengths, that smarts is more than academics, and is generally warm, safe and protective of her people. Likes to uplift over tearing down.

The Boy Who Wanted to Be a Deer by Ember White. Illustrated by Marta Maszkiewicz

Age Recommendation: Pre-School Topic/ Theme: Integrity/ Authenticity (it's all about being true to yourself so...) Setting: Unspecified, America at a guess

Rating: 4/5

I never would have found this or read it without stumbling across the author on social media showing some of their... weirder reviews, and tbh asking for Aussies to balance out the crazy. I saw at least one review calling The Boy Who Wanted to be a Deer grooming and to be honest, if you want to see it that way, that's how you will see it. Though why you would choose to see it like that I don't know. That's just weird. To look at this absolutely beautiful book as something with a malicious message is beyond me. I'm glad I did read this though. Not so much for Ember White's story as lovely as it is but for Marta Maszkiewicz's stunning illustrations.

I will make some comments on Ember White's story first. Let me start by sharing a quote from one of Ember White's tumblr posts. "I wanted to tell that story of anyone's who ever felt that they didn't belong anywhere. Whether you are a nerd, autistic, queer, trans, a furry, or some combination of the above, it makes for a sad and difficult life. This isn't just my story, and this is your story as well." Ember's story is quite unlike anything I've read in a while. Their story is well thought out well, and you can see that all their heart is in their book. You can see that their book is the book that they wish they could of had as a child. Embre gives us Tommy a young boy with a secret. In his case it is a pair of deer antlers that he keeps in a box and a want to be something else. The message of The Boy Who Wanted to be a Deer is to just be you. It shows the pain of repression, the pain that happens when you try to be someone you aren't. The phrasing is beautiful and enjoyable. I can see how this could be a very good read-to, it has the right message and easily memorable writing. The choice of a deer as the animal the boy wants to be is a good one. It's one of the animals with the most diverse symbolism some of the basics are harmony, happiness and innocence (phrased as being in touch with your inner child).

I would love to know who paired illustrator, Marta Maszkiewicz and Ember White. Marta's a perfect match style-wise for Ember's script. I adore her beautiful style it feels young and playful when it needs to and adds that moment of darkness when it is necessary. Her dark stormy moments with the purples and blues have the perfect depressing tone for Tommy's sadness. Storms have a rainbow-like background a nice touch. There is a scene where Tommy is looking at potential future careers (doctor, accountant, engineer), I love the choice Marta makes to give Tommy oversized clothes, a child playing dress up. Not just playing dress up but uncomfortable and awkward more than expected. Marta has done a fantastic job of aging Tommy up from his child self to his adult self to his true self. His true self is kinda in the middle in appearance, like he has shed the weight that he was carrying around as an adult that he has now shed. The dance/performance element is executed particularly well. I can sense the movement coming off the page and that outfit is lovely. The final illustration is just beautiful it is light and hopeful and innocent. Honestly, I can't praise the illustrations enough. I really want to find more of Marta Maszkiewicz's illustrations.

This is highly controversial and will remain so. It does what Ember wanted it to, it challenges the status quo and some people aren't ready for that. But some of us, librarians, parents and those outside the neurotypical, cishet sociocultural norms that are ready for it. The ending is unexpected but I really like that The Boy Who Wanted to be a Deer chooses to break the conventions that the children's publishing by giving the reader an unexpected ending of fulfilled dreams. I'm happy I read this and I think many others willing to look beyond the judgemental reviews probably will too.

It gave me a lot of MBFW Lexa vibes, but only when she's around Clarke.

Like we'll hear about it more from Anya and a bit from Raven and Jake, but when Lexa is out in the world by herself, she's a rather stoic person. Not that she's not personable, just quiet. Reserved. Not particularly a smiley person or someone who would ever be considered "chatty." Clarke said it herself, Lexa has a low tolerance for bullshit and not the greatest amount of energy for being friendly with people she doesn't know or particularly like.

But when she's around Clarke? She opens up. I mean I tried to somewhat show that in the admittedly very quick transitions between her scenes with Anya and Bellamy and how she is in every interaction with Clarke. It's like a switch flips and suddenly she's lighter. She exudes happiness. She smiles and jokes and is sassy and flirty and acts silly just to make Clarke laugh. At their first meeting flashback they connected over not being the "bubbly type", yet when they're together, they bring that lightness out in each other.

And that interview did remind me of that.

The part about "Maybe I could catch a fish...?... I think I could do that..." took me to Lexa flaked out on the couch while they're watching some wilderness doc and musing that out loud, only to get Clarke's disembodied snort from the kitchen followed by an immediate, "No. I can practically hear you wanting to go camping just to test this theory and you need to put that thought to bed right now... Catch a fish? No." Obviously their very intellectual debate about survival prowess ends in cuddles after a healthy wrestling match on said couch.

The "I know that's a cheat isn't it" feels like every affectionate but wholey indignant movies/books/music debate they've had since their first time hanging out and getting to know each other. It becomes this Thing between them that whenever the subject of favorite books/movies/songs comes up, they have all these inside jokes about it. Because Lexa is a fucking liar and a cheat because she insists that book series should count as 1 choice despite Clarke's insistence that that's crazy and also actually she's just a nerd. And Clarke is a complete gd hypocrite, because she staunchly defends her belief that picking a favorite song is just stupid, obviously have to choose an entire album as 1 choice and also while she's speaking her truth, if a movie is part of a trilogy, then all three are actually one long movie so it's a legal choice.

They feed into each other and bring the playfulness out in each other and it's really not hard to see just how happy they are when they're in the their own little world together 💕

everyone saw it coming,everyone but us of course.

it happened when we both went on vacation to Hawaii with our families for a little getaway before Oscar started his formula 2 season. we’d all been drinking one night, and me and Oscar were the only ones left; we danced and spun our way across the beach feeling free and laughing til’ we couldn’t breathe anymore. I had spun too fast ,falling over and pulling oscar down with me.

it was like a switch had been flipped.

we couldn’t keep our hands or eyes off of eachother for the rest of the night.

when we woke up, we finally confessed our love to eachother and made things official. as soon as we went downstairs everyone already knew that we had admitted our feelings and that we were now together. typical.

but that was 3 years ago.

we’re now currently in our hometown, melbourne,soaking up the aussie sun at his parents home before the busy race weekend starts and it’s the definition of perfect.

on the first day in Melbourne, oscar had taken me and some of our mutual friends to the Great Barrier Reef and spent the day surfing and swimming.

it was perfect, growing up in Australia I was always too busy with school work and my own sports I never really had much time to explore many of Australia’s natural wonders.

this is one of the things I love the most about Oscar, he’s always so thoughtful and always knows how to make things special. He knew I wanted to go and he made sure it was just that little bit more special for me, he truly is one in a million.

on the second day, he took me to my favourite book shop and insisted on paying for whatever I wanted. I declined and told him he didn’t need to and that I’d pay for them myself but he of course told me to stop being silly and bought them anyway.

on the third day, we ate breakfast in bed and watched all of our favourite films (Harry Potter because Oscar’s a massive nerd just like me) whilst talking about anything and everything.

on the next few days we relaxed,visited friends and family and took time for ourselves.

on the very lasts day Oscar took us on a helicopter ride through Melbourne. It was heavenly,it was truly a dream come true. It was their where he had kissed me on my forehead before pulling out a ringbox, revealing a promise ring.

“y/n, I wanted to give you this as a promise that one day we will have everything we ever wanted and that I’ll be with you for the rest of my life and that even if things get hard I will always be there for you and by your side. this ring also signifies that one day we’ll have that big house with the white picket fence and little mini me’s and mini you’s running around. I love you so much y/n”. he said with tears pricking his eyes.

I had kissed him so passionately and that even tho it was just a promise ring, I knew that it was a promise of the life we would have and for that I couldn’t be happier.

Dean stepped outside into the garden, the sun glinting in his eyes as he squinted through the beams in search of his angel. The breeze whispered through his hair, the soft scent of floral fragrance lingering in the air from the flowers Cas had planted that afternoon. A serene feeling filled Dean’s body as his eyes found Cas swinging gently in the hammock between the oak trees at the back of their yard. The peaceful sight sent a wave of adoration straight to Dean’s heart.

Walking along the stepping stones Dean had laid out for Cas the week prior to make a winding pathway through the garden, he gently carried two glasses of sweet tea and placed them on the table next to the hammock. It was their neighbors recipe which Cas was utterly obsessed with and it had fast become the angel’s favorite drink.

Softly, he nudged Cas’ ankle with his boot, making sure not to startle Cas with his presence. “Hey, handsome. Brought you some iced tea,” Dean said, shuffling and swaying the double hammock as he precariously shifted them into a comfortable position on the rope lattice. “The daylilies look really good.”

“You think so?” Cas said, letting Dean pull his legs across the hunter’s lap.

“I do. The orange color pairs well with the lavender,” Dean hummed, nuzzling his nose under Cas’ jaw.

“Thank you. For coming to the plant nursery with me this morning, and for pointing out the daylilies while we were there,” Cas said, reaching out to snag one of the cool glasses to take a sip. He offered Dean the glass- which caught Dean by surprise at Cas’ willingness to share his favorite drink- and Dean sighed in content as the sip of iced tea danced across his palate before Cas took the glass back again.

Dean let the peaceful moment lapse between them, the soft buzzing of bees and chirping of birds filling the air around them. Gently he went back to rocking the hammock, feeling Cas relax in his arms.

God, he never knew putting a hammock out in the yard would be so soothing, but it had fast become Cas’ favorite place to be in the afternoon to read a book. And somehow, Cas always let Dean climb into the hammock with him; rocking them softly as the day slowly passed them by.

“Did you know I love you?” Dean murmured, breaking the comfortable silence.

Cas beamed, leaning forward to press a kiss to Dean’s cheek. But the angel didn’t stop there. He started littering small kisses over Dean’s face; feather light presses of lips against Dean’s temple, his eyelids, his eyebrows, the tip of his nose. Everywhere Cas could reach, he dotted a kiss to Dean’s skin; lingering against any freckle his lips could find. 

As his lips trailed kisses against Dean’s face, Cas’ hands wandered down his body. Fingertips left soft traces of patterns against hips and danced across ribs. Even Cas’ body was arched into Dean, sunkissed skin curling around Dean as if Cas simply could not get enough of Dean.

Finally, after peppering kisses to every wrinkle and laugh line on Dean’s face, Cas kissed Dean on the lips. It was slow and ever-so-soft. Gentle little pecks against Dean’s mouth, and every time Cas pulled away he darted back in to kiss Dean’s lips again and again.

The adoration Dean had been feeling earlier bloomed in his chest like the flowers in their garden, and he reached up to tangle his fingers in Cas’ hair to tug the angel even closer into the kisses. Their bodies tangled together; legs slotting together as Dean all but tugged Cas on top of him. The angel's arms snaked around his waist and Dean rubbed one of his feet up the back of Cas’ calf. After several long lingering seconds, Dean pulled away, nudging his nose against Cas’. “What was that for?” Dean asked breathlessly.

“Because I love you, too,” Cas murmured.

The adoration burst into overwhelming affection, and Dean was momentarily stunned by the fact he got to have this. This love, this retired life in their cozy little house with it’s serene garden, this moment in their hammock wrapped up in each other’s arms.

“Oh good, because that means I can steal this,” Dean said, sneaking his hand out and stealing Cas’ iced tea and taking a few gulps before Cas yanked the glass away.

“You’ve got your own drink right there,” Cas whined, even though he offered the straw to Dean again.

Dean grinned, taking another sip before quickly kissing Cas on the mouth, letting the sweet taste of the tea transfer from his lips to Cas’. He settled back against Cas’ side, casting his eyes over towards the grill. They’d had burgers last night, but he could put together some hot dogs and ribs for a change.

“What do you say to grilling together again tonight? I kinda wanna stay out here and enjoy the evening,” Dean said, nuzzling behind Cas’ ear.

With his free hand, Cas reached out and tangled his fingers with Dean’s. “I’d like that very much,” Cas said, closing his eyes and letting out a happy hum.

With a smile of his own, Dean pushed against the ground with the heel of his foot to gently sway the hammock again. The breeze drifted by, a butterfly landed on the tree the hammock was tied to, and Dean relished this perfect moment of domestic bliss they’d carved out for themselves in their home.
