First of all, I don't think anyone refuses to admit Glenn is anything but perfect, and I also don't think anyone excuses his "shitty behaviour," but while you only may have just become aware of this moment, it was first brought to light in 2017, right before Glenn left the show "for good" and has kinda been hashed to death. If you're genuinely asking 'why is no one talking about Glenn's temper tantrums from 8+ years ago,' idk how to answer that question other than: why would we be? It's just not relevant

We know, from set stories and Glenn himself, that Glenn has gone through many ups and downs on the set of Sunny. He's spoken quite a bit about how his attitude has ruined the vibe and created a lot of tension in the writers room and on set before, and it's something he needed Rob to bring to his attention in Season 11 because he couldn't recognise it harmed other people (and that's what led him to realise he needed to walk away). I think it's not, like, a hidden or dismissed aspect of his personality that he's a diva, even today after righting his attitude and returning, he still tends to "method act" to a degree when he's playing Dennis and comes off a certain way

So yes, he's been "exposed" as a brat on set and a little entitled in general, and he's got some questionable views on health, for sure and I think that can make you dislike him and if that's so...that's fine. I don't think anyone in this fandom cares if you do or don't, honestly, but that works both ways.

People who post about Glenn in fond ways aren't going to disclose that they know he's entitled and centrist every time they post anything about him, but whenever something does happen/come out, people do criticise it in the moment. The Podcast brought a lot to light and it seemed like weekly we were scrutinizing something RCG said but, like, there's genuinely nothing Glenn has done in the past year that the fandom has chosen to ignore for the sake of excusing his shitty behaviour...? Are we supposed to rehash dead and buried RCG drama just because it was reposted to a different platform?

I get if you're just learning about him as a person now it can be weird to see most people who are actively talking about him seem to just be stanning him blindly, but that's really not true. Do yiu have any tips on like how to attract more attention 😭 it's been a good while and it's a huge struggle of keeping motivation and not so amazing art so it's hard to sure my characters and their stories bc one thing a can say in confidence is I am a good writer I'd like to think, people tell me I have and oddly good but cryptic way of writing that keeps people enthralled, but my biggest struggle is getting them interested in the first place 😭

hi there!! i admittedly dont really know much about the world of writing and how to gain more attention there, but i can try to give tips and see what applies & sticks!

start off short & simple and build it up over time

if you start off with something big and complicated there will be more pressure to keep things big and complicated. theres nothing wrong with short and simple and mixing it up here & there (ie with art: if you only post full pieces with extravagant rendering people will keep expecting it. mix it up a bit. i try posting a variety of sketches and doodles and more detailed things— sometimes some things do better than others and thats ok!

it is 100% okay to repost/reblog your own work

if you ever see me spamming my blog with the same posts, its so i have it back on peoples feeds and on my main profile and its easier for people to find. its also likely that some ppl missed the post, and reblogging/reposting gives them the opportunity to see it!!

something something “its cringe and egotistical” WRONG!!!!!!!!!! its completely normal for creators to repost their content and it may help a lot!!

short & sweet descriptons

when you post, avoid giant paragraphs of text, especially if you’re including art in the post. people will be distracted and will see a giant post and just scroll past it

speaking of descriptions, try using trendy words and notable names

its kinda like hashtagging. if you look at my posts you’ll typically see how i will drop people’s full names + include the word “art” or “doodle” … this is because it will more likely show up on someones feed if said person looks up the same words.

ie: googling “muichiro tokito art” -> insert my post popping up because it has “muichiro tokito art” written out in the description

i admittedly have trouble providing tips as someone who doesnt rlly understand how i got noticed to begin with haha. something something imposter syndrome or whatever they call it these days… so im not really sure if anything above helps, but this is stuff i typically try to keep in mind when i post with the intent of trying to get people to see it

i know this is cheesy and this is easier said than done (i have this habit too a lot of the time) but numbers does not equal ur worth or talent. i know it isnt motivating and it can be so heartbreaking): but even if ur stuff doesnt get a lot of notoriety please know it doesnt define your value . this may sound like gibberish as it is 5 am as im posting this but truly… never give up on ur work!!! i promise u someone out there loves it

im more well known for my deaging & fluff content and to this day im rlly shocked it blew up the way it did. i really made it for myself. i came up with a whole alias and didnt plan on posting it anywhere bc i was so scared ppl would hate it and harass me or nobody would gaf. but eventually i was just like Man. if this thing helps me then maybe it can help someone out there too. and it helped provide ppl some joy & wonder and whimsy & made them feel seen and truly thats all i could ever want…

its difficult and its hard but i promise u… be patient and kind to yourself. it can definitely be hard sharing things around and getting that exposure you need but there are ways for sure. some journeys are faster than others and thats ok!

I kinda agree with the anon that said Ian and Anthony dont feel like they’d be friends. Obviously there’s so many types of friendship but it feels like in the time they spent apart they grew into very different ppl and maybe they are very close (thats what we’re told anyway) but I feel like when they bought back Smosh they very much went back to “it’s like we’re 17 again!” And now they’ve realized it isn’t always like that. Like I wonder if part of Anthony not being on camera as much anymore is because of them growing apart a little along with all the other stuff. it also kinda feels like they bought Smosh back and then merged the two companies so now it feels almost like Ian’s more in charge of everything that Anthony is. Anthony feels almost more disconnected, sometimes he’ll repost Smosh TikTok’s and stuff on instagram but thats about it in terms of him acknowledging Smosh. I feel a little bad about speculating and talking about all this but at the same time they haven’t given us any clear answers so what else is there to do other than speculate? It’s really hard to just accept all these changes and move on without any actual answers

It does feel that way. Tbh they don't share any interests if you think about it, Ian would talk about trash tv Anthony would talk about yoga, Ian would talk about gossip and Anthony would roll his eyes and talk about zen. When I look at this way they're so opposites on so many stuff. I seen Ian talking about parties and Anthony rolling his eyes talking about how he loves home the best etc. Ian likes to go improve classes with Smosh for example and Anthony would just stay at home painting. I saw Ian begging Anthony to go traveling to Europe or Turkey or somewhere else but as far as we know it never happened. Or Ian kept pushing Anthony to watch dune 2 for like weeks and he didn't, he prefers to watch gaming youtube videos instead.

So like i think nostalgia and love brought them together and kept them together for a while but after some time they realized they're not really that similar and they're not 17 anymore. Like i don't think Anthony is big on humor/comedy atp. So he doesn't enjoy being on the channel much. I hope they spent time together but atp i don't know if they're doing it actually or like they're that compatible. That's just my opinion tho who knows 🤷🏻

Also like you said if they don't give us explanation all we have is speculation, it's inevitable. And about the companies merging i actually feel bad about Ian in that case not Anthony. omfg so im reading your linguistics paper rn and im at the part where you talk about how its taboo to post abt the vday vid or dailybooths etc. but i feel like the chains have loosened over the years so to speak? cuz like, on twitter people have just. posted full dailybooth screenshots, or reference the 2009 phan song all the time which itself refs vday. and im wondering if thats like, because the community had gotten smaller after the dapg hiatus that ppl were more lax about it, or if it felt like dnp were more lax about it, or if these are all younger fans who werent aware of this etiquette at all but since so many younger fans have been joining like post coming out they just dont see it as taboo at all? some self-policing does still occur, specifically w ppl reposting dans nakedbooths, but its def not the case of YOU HAVE TO BE COMPLETELY SILENT ABOUT THIS anymore. i havent even finished reading yet but im enthralled

i think there's multiple reasons why the taboo on discussing the vday vid & other deleted social media things has grown lesser? under the cut bc i got wordy.

partially i'd chalk it up to the change in phandom demographics. like, there's a way lower proportion of us now who were around for the direct aftermath of the first major leak in 2012, or who even were a part of the phandom when a majority of folks had been present for that. things were so bad and painful then & in the era directly afterwards! people still learn about that but the knowledge of how bad things got is always going to be different from the lived experience.

so that's reason one: i think that within the fandom the strongest emotional reaction to the existence of the vday video & deleted social media posts will always exist in ppl who were around in 2011-2013 & similarly deeply ingrained in folks who joined right after that in 2014-15. and i think there's still a lot of us but there's also just like.. so many less of us now, too. the vast majority of my mutuals from 5 years ago have abandoned or deleted their blogs.

i do think another part of why things have gotten less taboo is bc it's no longer something that has the potential to out dan and phil/how directly they've acknowledged the social media posts (& to a lesser degree the vday vid)?

like. dan literally used screenshots that he almost certainly got from the phan directory in basically i'm gay. they acknowledged that the manchester eye meant something to them in giving the people what they want/witl (watched them at the same time, can't remember which had that in it). i know they knew how people would react to them mentioning iconic teen dalien moments in the big wheel in the sims.

there's also the fact that like... angry phil DMs/copyright strikes are a thing of the past? i'm not going to tell people where to find the vday video but it's stupidly easy to locate on more mainstream platforms at this point in time. shit, that brings me to another point: fans who joined more recently weren't around for the era where blogs were getting taken down for what they were posting. another reason it's more chill now.

like, the openness of the secret is like, something that makes seeking out the taboo less of a thrill?

but on the other hand! learning in detail abt the vday vid and old social media posts is something i think people find less necessary now? that used to be the most concrete like... phan proof. proof they were queer. and now that they're explicitly gay and openly together to the degree that they are it's like. the value of the information has lessened.

to go in a different direction. i definitely wouldn't call it a formalized etiquitte that the youngun's just don't know, especially when it comes to the social media posts—they've always circulated and even 5 years ago when i wrote that paper they were more openly talked about even tho the vday video wasn't (though again: 5 years ago was still wayyyyy more lax than 2013/14).

ultimately there's always just been so much clout tied up to knowing about the vday video & social media posts? so even though being too blatant has always been a taboo transgressing that norm with skill has also always been a phandom value.

i'm not going to get too far into the ways that dan and phil's fandom literacy and the fan response of archiving everything play into things bc i think i covered that well in my paper but yeah!

i don't have a good conclusion but: less % of the fandom being present for the aftermath of dnp being outed by the leak + greater aknowledgement of these subjects by dnp + less value for the information in the vday vid & deleted social media posts = more casual attitude towards vday vid & social media posts and a healthier phandom overall

This site it is dying. You may see gisfets with thousands of notes, but its not as often as a few years ago even, not even talking pre 2014-16 (also theyre mostly from ppl with thousands of followers and owners of blogs like bbelcher and such).

Gifmakers stopped making gifs cause people stopped reblogging, simple as that. I myself stopped making gifs cause i was frustrated, spending entire afternoons on gifsets for them to get 500 notes. Now dont get me wrong, i was grateful for those, but having been here for literally 11 years, i know what real engagement looks like, ive seen gifsets, some of mine included, get 20k notes in hours.

So, yeah anon, this site is slowly dying whether you see it or not.

like it's not even that 500 notes is bad it's that if you were a gifmaker here when the site wasn't dying you know that a set doing WELL at 500 is awful because what does it say about everything else? the only way to get thousands of notes now is to gif something IMMEDIATELY after it drops. and then after like two weeks people stop caring. i giffed red white & royal blue the first two weeks after it came out and some of those sets have 5-8k, now i make sets of the movie and sit at around 500 because people don't want to engage with things long term. and it's fine! but gifmaking takes time and work and this website has aged. a lot of us have jobs or kids and to sit there and spend time on something takes effort and at a certain point you start to wonder what the point even is, esp when you know that someone is probably reposting the stuff you made onto other platforms and stealing your ideas and getting all the engagement. there just isn't the same sense of community there once was and that's the saddest part.

but i try to encourage my fellow gifmakers, you know WHY? because i like reblogging beautiful sets and if people feel like their work is for nothing then what the hell am i gonna reblog? nothing bc ppl will quit and then how can i put things in my digital scrapbook? the creator and reblogger relationship is a two way street.

theres a weird trend i see online where ppl assume if you dislike or hate something that means you either think its illegal, believe it should be illegal, and/or want to see it banned in some capacity

i dont think legislation will stop generative ai writing and art. there is no way to make a law that covers generative ai but will not cover human made art, nor would laws actually stop large corporations funneling money into large scale projects like that from bending the rules in their favor. i just think you're an asshole if you use it and also a lazy sack of shit who needs to learn to create something

likewise if you repost someone's art and writing i don't think they need to file for copyright, send a cease and desist, and sue you in a court of law. they can just call you a fucking asshole.
