Everything we know about Project Apple (and, by extension, Anya's past) thus far

thought i'd compile all of that now while endo's on break Just In Case the next chapter happens to start anya's backstory (i don't Think it will but endo likes surprising us LSDFKLFS)

important disclaimer that project apple and the organization in charge of anya's experiments have not been confirmed to be related! there's evidence that they have things in common, in particular employees, but that's our only real connection between the two thus far. still! worth looking into

more under the cut!

so, starting very strongly with the very first mention of anything related to the project: anya's introduction in chapter 1

despite her being a main character, we know very little about her past at the moment, and this little blurb at the beginning makes up a very big portion of what we know.

things to note here:

as an experiment, her name was "Test Subject 007". important to note that the notation differs between her and bond: she was Test Subject 007, bond was Subject 8, no zeroes in there;

she had been made thus by accident, the phrasing itself implying quite heavily that she was just a normal child before said accident (but this is the translation! i don't know japanese so i can't cross-reference with the raws to clarify if the phrasing changes anything, but the fanbook uses the word "gained" to describe her powers too);

because her mind-reading is an unintended consequence, that means the scientists were presumably not, at least initially, trying to achieve cognitive enhancements in humans, and were instead trying to achieve something else, whatever that might've been;

she escaped from the facility and then moved from institution to institution, looking for a family.

so, crucially, through this little introduction we learn that there is an organization, government-funded or otherwise, that is or was conducting human experiments for unknown purposes. we also learn that whatever family anya had prior to being involved in the experiments is more than likely unreachable, at least as far as she knows, and so she has settled for finding a new family to take care of her instead.

in terms of the facility itself, here we see they clearly drilled it into her that she can't ever reveal her secret (and the darn plush is there too -- in the anime it's even more emphasized, as you can see in the gif i made)

through her reminiscing though, we get our very first look at the scientists that were in charge of her! they're in the gif above but here they are in the manga too. it's so interesting that the anime actually shows their eyes behind the glasses though, fascinating choice.

the insistence on world peace is important, as it explains her own personal obsession with it and shows that it's not just because of twilight's own focus on preserving the peace. i also don't think twilight ever really talks about "world peace," only about "preserving the current peace between westalis and ostania" -- anya seems to be the only one talking about WORLD peace (even in the very first scene where either of them mention it in proximity to each other in ch 1, loid says "understanding the other party is the first step towards peace" and anya's interpretation is "understanding me makes world peace?") but take this with a grain of salt because i might be wrong! going through every single mention of peace in the story just to fact check this one little trivia fact is a bit much i think so i'm not doing it JSDFKLSD

but yes

remember mr hair strand and baldy, we'll see them again. not her though, ig she wasn't in charge of bond

now, fast-forwarding to chapter 19, we finally get a name and a premise for the experiments:

"but oana," you might say, "this is talking about animals only! how do we know it's the same project as anya's, which involved human experimentation?"

i don't think it is, is the thing! i think it's related to the experiments anya was a part of, which is evidenced by the same scientists being featured in project apple too, but there's more going on that we don't know about. there wouldn't be such adamancy on keeping the two separate in every official mention of them if they were just the same thing, imo!

back to the evidence, we learn that the project, conducted and funded by the previous ostanian regime (meaning donovan's related to it one way or another, since he was prime minister), was marked by franticness and desperation -- a prime place for accidents like anya's telepathy and bond's future vision.

we also learn that the project was sacked by the new administration and that the former test subjects ended up on the black market.

(this makes it very important, imo, to learn when anya escaped the facility vs. when the project was sacked. it's clearly no longer in function, but while we've heard nothing from them thus far, i'm willing to bet the shady dealings around the desmond group are NOT related to the war, as W.I.S.E. has been led to believe, but rather to reignite project apple. that is speculation however so i'm going to refrain from theorising much on why the desmond group is focused on acquiring pharmaceutical companies!!)

ok speculation tangent over, back on track

so, that's already a decent amount of info! but moving to chapter 22, when bond is finally home, and we finally see some familiar faces

behold! baldy and mr hair strand!

and 2 other guys we don't know but will see again in another bond flashback!

that's 2 out of the 3 scientists we've seen thus far from anya's own time as subject 007, confirming that there IS a connection between anya and bond's experiments, regardless of whatever the project anya was a part of might've been named.

this is also the chapter in which we learn that bond himself was subject 8 (or, if we take it from the fanbook, subject #8. still, diff notation from anya!)

in chapter 31, we learn an interesting tiny piece of trivia. we don't get any further info on it, but it IS mentioned as something that is known by W.I.S.E.:

ostania is rumoured to have done human experimentation! and W.I.S.E., and by extension loid, are aware of that.

do i know how them knowing may be important later? not really!

the next droplet of info we get is in chapter 40. we see that project apple had collaborators that are still functioning unhindered.

of course, born industries is only rumoured to have been involved with project apple, but regardless of whether or not they actually were, the rumour itself implies that the project likely pulled scientists from various other companies' R&D departments.

(this makes the desmond group's acquisition of glooman pharmaceuticals shadier, but anyway)

as a side note, twilight is emoting so much at just his wrong assumption that bond is seeking revenge against the scientists. imagine how he's going to react when he finds out about anya JKSDFKLFSD

and now aaaaall the way in chapter 58, we see the bald guy who anya also knows, the two scientists from bond's previous flashback, and one whole new guy!

and thus ends our current knowledge of it all!

the only other thing worth discussing is anya's knowledge of classical language

but plenty people have already discussed these scenes, especially recently, so here are some links: 1 | 2 | 3

the only thing i can add is that i'm fairly certain that classical language is a lot more likely to be latin than old english, because it's a very common language to learn in school (in europe at least, and ostania is based on east germany so it makes sense to me. i learned mandatory latin in school for a few good years too, even if i wasn't that good at it lol) and because one of the most common modern usages of latin are in medicine and science, it would make sense that she'd be better at it due to exposure.

a possibility is also that the scientists would think in latin to conceal their thoughts from her, and that's how she ended up learning so much. she's not fluent in latin, she's just well acquainted and that cicumstance would explain the how.

BUT THAT'S SPECULATIONNN

also i don't think "ANIA" is an acronym, nor do i think anya's been misspelling her own name out of lack of knowledge. "ania" is a polish diminutive of anna and an alternate transcription of Аня, so i think it's far more likely that anya isn't ostanian or westalian than it is that her name comes from an acronym.

now,

TL;DR!

what we know about project apple (and the "mysterious organization"):

project apple was funded and conducted by what appears to have been donovan's regime and, from what W.I.S.E. knows, aimed to create highly intelligent animals for military purposes;

W.I.S.E. is aware that ostania is at the very least rumoured to have dabbled in human experimentation;

the project is presumably no longer on-going, though it is likely there are efforts behind the scenes to revive it;

it is rumoured but not confirmed that project apple had collaborating companies that are still functioning perfectly fine;

the same scientists who were in charge of bond were also in charge of anya, signalling that there is a very significant connection between project apple and the "mysterious organization;"

based on what they were telling anya, they were/are very focused on "world peace";

their experimentation methods include but likely aren't limited to electrocution.

and what we (vaguely) know about anya that relates to this:

she is at the youngest, 4 years old, and at the oldest, 5 nearing 6. we don't know her real age, all we know is she definitely lied about being 6;

she is very fixated on specifically world peace while twilight is focused on peace between ostania and westalis. the scientists are the very first we see talking about this, so it's likely their fault;

she is unreasonably well acquainted with classical language;

she has escaped the facility at LEAST 1 year ago;

and, one tidbit from the fanbook (page 29): "Anya has been reading minds for as long as she can remember," implying that her memory of a life before the lab is muddy at best and absent at worst.

YOUUU. HELLO !!! HI i have several thoughts and headcanons i have been thinking about him for over a month straight (i haven't posted any drawings because i'm self conscious about how i draw him). but im super super scatterbrained about it so forgive me .. ill just list them as i go. also this isn't everything but this post is going to be long anyway. oops

BALDI BALDIMORE . hmm .. mainly headcanons here .. gonna forget a lot of stuff

1st . i am world's biggest baldi sympathizer . i really do believe he's just a silly and kind teacher. in every sequence hes in where hes not chasing you he's very kind to you ... shows you his songs and involves you in his projects. lets you use him as a test subject for his shrink machine. though the most interesting may be the secret ending for classic style. after getting every question wrong, he calmly explains negative numbers to the player. it's so much more like he's gently holding your hand or something ...

i like to think hes also unsettling or off-putting to others sometimes. weird creature from the woods to me ....... weird behaviors ... animal .. but very sweet

he is so so so smart. he's like giga mega smart if his inventions say anything. he's way too overqualified to be teaching at hereschool

has ten disorders. autistic. medicated

about what he is .. i don't think he's a human. i think their universe is kinda like a fucked up tawog. i really really liked the headcanon that he was some toy-esque doll / thing, so i largely took that and ran with it. he's made up of some sort of soft, bendable plastic with ball joints and hinges etc. i just call it "bioplastic" and i have a few ideas pertaining to some biology but i won't go on about it

while his hearing is often a great attribute to have and is very useful, it can quickly become a detriment if theres too many sounds, if things are too loud, too grating, etc. he can become disoriented, confused, agitated, and very overwhelmed <- additionally when hes overwhelmed he may communicate in ASL instead of verbally ! also a good skill if a student or staff may be HoH or deaf

will focus very very intensely on his projects that he may spiral. likr he doesn't sleep or eat or blink for 3 days straight. the principal will go find him and force him to stop when this happens

^ speaking of him and the principal: you were there for my louimar episode so this shouldnt be a surprise. ermm educational yaoi <- what my friend and i lovingly call it ... im a simple man with common taste ... their mechanics work really together and the principal is calm and quiet while baldi is more eccentric. they are sweet . to ME !!!

that basement he has in bbcr? he built that and he lives there. and no one really knows he does. like a freak. i dont know whats wrong with him .. works on projects and inventions down there

^ the principal would actually find out hes staying there and. despite the "what in the world" factor to it, he'd let baldi stay with him so he's in an actual house ((and also because he's really lonely))

BLADDER. is his brother. and so is badsum but i don't really think about him .. bladder is like an opposite to him in quite a few ways; he's normal . he's very well adjusted, grounded, kind and has light and hope in his eyes. he's a physiology teacher who works at "thereschool". despite him having brothers they all have no parents. they umm spawned in and that's it.

he's also pretty good at his job! he likes to incorporate different tactile and visual methods into his lessons (math machines + balloons + yct pad) . he'll say he doesn't have a favorite student (it's arts and crafters) (sometimes they'll draw him pictures and he'll always hang it up in the classroom or take them)

^ arts and crafters is also somewhat like a snake ... biiig sock snake. taller than baldi. will be over x2 as big as an adult

about the school .. everyone is pretty close. it's a rather small school with a small amount of students and staff. but this means they get to do fun stuff like all take field trips together at the same time. beans isn't included he is my least favorite and i hope he perishes in the forest

and: i want to talk about null / filename2 specifically. they're a lot more entwined with the whole game thing.

not entirely concrete on my concepts for him, but i like to think he may be some sort of scrapped or unused character left out of bounds to corrupt. he dislikes baldi. "you took everything from me" "who are you"

one idea i really like to think about it is that he believes the game is much 'bigger' than it truly is, that there ARE things beneath the surface to worry over. but that's not true, and it's moreso he's trying to give himself a purpose other than what he is: nothing.

with baldi being the mascot and all, he may also believe him to be the (if not one of) the sources of 'evil' behind the game, even if it's not like that. so he's basically really misguided in his beliefs.

also he's stupid. one of the reasons i think this of him is because of his cutscene at the end of his chase sequence. "i see you found a note from the ... 'developer'. [...] well, this is what i think about everyone who tells the same LIES!". <- it IS just a note from the developer, that is TRULY all it is. he's fooling himself. someone put him out of his misery. causing problems over here.

also he'd play cod and post on reddit "aita"

I have no idea.

Last night instead of sleeping like a normal functioning human being, I started reading fanfiction like I always do. Now, fanfiction on wattpad is a different breed of books. All of the misspellings, the ways things are worded, the plot, everything.

I sometimes forget that the books on that platform are created by children, and not actual authors who have years of experience. I was reading this book about Wally running this factory. I have no idea why it exists, or what it does, and I found myself getting bored because I had no idea what was happening most of the time. I stopped halfway through because of it.

I sometimes remind myself during random times of the week that I was writing my own book on the platform. It's of course not any kind of masterpiece, but I remember starting it because I wanted more good and long Baldi x Principal books out there. (This isn't an add, if you somehow find the book I'm talking about please refrain from reading I beg of you)

Anyway, I couldn't tell you why I keep stopping the plot and forgetting about it. It's not boredom or anything, I definitely have loads of time to write new chapters and stuff. I did continue work on it last night and ended up staying up past the next day.

I don't know why I even wrote this post lmao. I guess I just wanted my thoughts out there. Anywho, sorry for the inactivity I've been working on this big project. I'll be back with some pride drawings i did and a story like I did last year :)

Cloud Nothings — Final Summer (Pure Noise)

Cloud Nothings spike a corrosive slurry with sugar, putting bounce and glee into blistering, feedback-addled tone. “Running Through the Campus at Night” lopes through rainbow arcs of feedback, little explosions of percussion going off continually, but its figurative feet hardly touch the ground. It’s a high and a rush, like certain six-milers when everything falls into place, and though it’ll blow you back with volume, you’ll have a smile on your face when it does.

This is Cloud Nothings’ eighth full-length, coming a decade and a half after its first lo-fi bangers. It’s certainly true that the band has navigated several cycles of the rock-is-dead-no-it-isn’t narrative during that period. When Baldi’s music first hit our inboxes, the big comparison was Wavves (he was better), now he swims in the same pool as Wednesday and Ratboys. Over time, his band has offered fuzz pop and noise in various proportions. Early efforts like Turning On and the S-Tfizzed with lo-fi melodic energy, while 2012’s Attack on Memory (recorded with the late, great Steve Albini) buzzed in darker, more dissonant aggression. More recently, Baldi has flirted with free jazz and improvisation, playing a wild sax alongside long-time drummer Jason Gerycz in the Baldi Gerycz Duo.

This journey, though, has led Baldi — alongside Gerycz and bassist Chris Brown — to a place not too far from where they began, where fuzz-crusted romance blares and blusters without obscuring its fetching, hooky charms. Final Summer nails that very Western Mass aesthetic (even though Baldi is from Cleveland).  Think Ovlov, California X, most of the Exploding in Sound roster and, of course, Dinosaur. These are headbangers with a shit-eating grin, and there are no loose threads, not one.

The title track, for instance, looms into view on tense staccato electric picking over a swelling wash of synth sound. It’s edgeless, tempo-less extending from a center rather than moving forward…until it isn’t. About a minute into the cut, a drum beat kicks in, a guitar riff circles, little space noise sparkle of synth drift in, and the chorus begins. It’s like Tangerine Dream transforming itself into Sugar, both parts pure pleasure, wildly different and somehow complementary.

Though Final Summer doesn’t rage as hard as Attack on Memory, in general, it’s got its bludgeoning intervals, most notably sludgy “I’d Get Along.”  “If something would happen, if something would happen with me, I’d get along,” caterwauls Baldi over a frenetic cacophony of drums and guitars. His voice frays as he projects over the mayhem. The singing goes hoarse and metal-voiced in the long finishes, as Gerycz explodes in frantic bursts. It’s loud and corroded but also kind of a bop. That’s a trick that Cloud Nothings have been pulling since the late aughts, but there’s no sign that they’re tired of it. Final Summer is as sharp and exuberant and fierce as anything this band has ever done.

Hot off the heels of yesterday's celebration, I felt it only right to follow it up with yet more celebration. Wheras SING A SONG ABOUT HOPES AND DREAMS was part of a celebration of SiIvaGunner as a whole, today we're looking at a somewhat different celebration: the premiere of Season 6, Bramble Blast Collab, is an enchantingly unique collab even amidst the channel's long history of doing them.

Kickstarted by our good friend tunedlink back in Season 1, collabs like the File Select Fusion Collab were initially labelled as just that - "fusion" collabs, a carryover from the Kirbtunes remix project they were imitating. These proved to be immensely popular and loved by the community, and so the "fusion collab" branding stuck around, eventually morphing into a whole new, more clearly-segmented form of collaborative projects. I'm yet to cover any of these on the blog, but Season 7's Shop Fusion Collab is an excellent example of these collabs - each segment lovingly crafted by teams of rippers with visuals to match. In comparison, the old style of fusion collab may seem a bit messy, a bit unfocused and noisy. But amidst that noise, these have always been able to serve as incredible celebrations of so many parts of SiIvaGunner all at once.

While File Select Fusion Collab served to celebrate the good times had across Season 1, looking back upon all of its events and memes in a sentimental way, Bramble Blast Collab has always felt more...mixed, in its messaging. It has old memes, of course, be it Space Jam, Soulja Boy, or the introductory clip of Chad Warden's holy ghost, but...its filled to the brim with so much more, sources from the channel's recent history like Big Time Rush, Yankin' and Astronaut in the Ocean, amidst sources that are basically never seen on the channel such as Baldi's Basics and Smiling Friends. Its all delivered at a pace that's insanely fast even for the standard of these kinds of collabs - the result is a noise collage not just of SiIvaGunner's history, but of its possible future - the jokes we're yet to hear the full potential of, mixed in with small snippets of our old memories.

Althesame, it carries a slight sense of melancholy to it buried underneath all those funny memes: The track its built on *is* Bramble Blast, after all, one of the most emotionally poignant pieces of retro VGM out there. After rummaging around a zillion sources for most of the rip, the four-minute mark feels as if the song is breaking free of itself with the core melody re-emerging at full force, gradually built up by the increased prominence of the backing melody from the three-minute mark. Season 6, even as early as this, had the feeling of sorrow sort of engrained in it from the announcement of GilvaSunner - the original channel SiIvaGunner is made in tribute of - officially shutting down later that year. The fallout of which wouldn't quite be understood until I've won, but at what cost, but even as far back as the Season's premiere it was as if we were all gearing up for the inevitable.

Bramble Blast Collab, with its noise, its barrage of memes and its enchanting core throughline, remains one of my favorite season premieres the channel has ever done, and I feel it's not appreciated nearly enough for just how incredible of a collaboration it is. My hat goes off to the dozen rippers involved in its creation, for setting the stage perfectly for the ride Season 6 would end up being - althewhile keeping the spirit of the old Fusion Collabs alive and kicking.

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade Deliver at Brooklyn Steel

Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade – Brooklyn Steel – October 22, 2023

The Frog Brigade are the jam-band-iest of Les Claypool’s many thrilling projects. Or they’re a jammy band with a love of funk, prog, psychedelia and Frank Zappa that would be surfing the big waves out near the edges of sanity anyway but just so happen to get their marching orders from Claypool. (That is, not unlike all the musical projects the relentlessly quirky, generationally talented bassist puts his name on.) Either way — or, more likely, both — they’re a force, and what a treat to have them back, 20 years after their heyday and any semblance of regular touring — and in midseason form, to boot. 

At Brooklyn Steel on Sunday, the Frog Brigade were on the attack. As in most of the shows during this year’s reunion tour, this one housed a full, go-for-it, manic-jammy full reading of Pink Floyd’s Animals. But what came before and after the Floyd excursion over the course of two sets and nearly three hours was just as delectable. And maybe marching orders isn’t the right way to describe the Claypool effect on a band like this. Claypool himself would seem like the command-and-control boss of this outfit but in practice he’s more the chief creative officer, giving like-minded creators enough room to be their zany selves in the framework he’s created. 

This version of the Frog Brigade is assembled and plays like a Frankenstein’d version of the original — many of the same players, yes, from the heady days of ought-three, but also coconspirators from other Claypool bands like the Claypool Lennon Delirium (whose other namesake, Sean Lennon, now has the guitar chair for the Brigade). Sax sorcerer Eric “Skerik” Walton is here, and so is Mike Dillon, the percussion-and-vibes madman. Keys are handled by the prog-inclined Harry Waters (son of Roger), and Paolo Baldi, the Claypool regular and former skins-man for Cake, is on the drums. Together, as in all Claypool bands, they create a cauldron of sonics to which the listener and concertgoer aren’t so much witnesses as they are plunged in, the band driving up the intensity using aggressive, nudging rhythms, often sinister (but not untender) melodies, and free reign to, y’know, beat and blow shit up. This year’s repertoire overall is polyglot Claypool, and on Sunday, that meant plenty of Brigade cuts, but also tunes from Sausage (“Riddles Are Abound Tonight”), from the Holy Mackerel, from the Delirium (“Blood and Rockets”), and from the Bucket of Bernie Brains (a fizzy “Thai Noodles” in the encore), plus covers as varied as Prince Buster (“One Step Beyond”) and the English Beat (“Mirror in the Bathroom”).

The Pink Floyd stuff? Yeah, totally fun, as advertised. I could listen to Claypool and Co. pillage their way through “Sheep” for hours (and their “Dogs” is just as on point). But no matter what it is, these guys kick up a mighty groovy racket. Late in the second set came “Precipitation” (from the Holy Mackerel back pages), which built to a whirring, stab-syncopation solo-fest around its “Rain, rain, rain” refrain. “Hendershot,” another Claypool staple, had a bit of ragtime piano from Waters thrown in before it became a surf-rock adventure, Skerik’s sax screaming over it. The tale of “David Makalaster” (both parts!) had the band at a steady-rolling chant, pushing, pushing, pushing its stabbing rhythm.

There’s a tendency to call this music wacky but that kind of misses the musicality in it, especially when each of these songs gets a healthy work-through. The six of them don’t for a second lose the collective sonics — if you really listen closely, you hear them playing off one another with subtle asides, even when one of them is blasting away out in front of the jam. —Chad Berndtson | @Cberndtson
