the one major idea i wish i could impart to me-in-the-past is that no behavior has an inherent value. a well-behaved dog is defined (by most) as a dog that is a pleasure to live with... but the meaning of those words changes depending on who is speaking.

kima, through some creative experimentation, discovered that he can effectively get attention if he rests his chin on an object near me. this can potentially be the object i’m holding (phone, book, laptop, etc). my mom think it’s annoying but i think it’s a charming, disciplined option compared to barking or pawing or placing a ball as directly in my lap as he can — which, admittedly, he continues to do because sometimes i cave — so i reward it.

it’s nice to no longer view behaviors through the lens of what others could see as undesirable. it’s nice to look at my dog and see him for who he is and appreciate him for that instead of thinking about what to change and how.

if you wanna do a dog sport... do it. regardless of what breed(s) your dog is, you can find a sport that you both enjoy! or, at the very least, a sport that one of you loves and the other can appreciate because it's a fun, special thing that you do together. there is no need to get a specific breed or specific dog. there is a sport for everyone — rally-o, scentwork, coursing and drag racing, weightpull, herding, obedience, barnhunt, agility, earthdog, dock diving. the list goes on. contact some local dog trainers or a breed club, ask them where to look and get involved!

watching dogblr glorify a byb and then turn around and talk about how important it is to support responsible breeders is exhausting. health testing and puppy culture are not the gold standard of breeding — that’s the bare minimum. it’s not reasonable to expect the average person to know this, given the lack of thorough and accessible pet care education available for the public, but if you’re a so-called dog hobbyist :/ do better :/

unpopular opinion: do not get a dog immediately after your previous dog has passed away, or because you want it to "mend your broken heart".

does it hurt to lose a pet? absolutely. it's devestating. but it is incredibly selfish of you to get another dog and expect it to fix you or replace your previous dog. it's disrespectful to both your previous and new dog — respect and love them both for who they are, as completely different dogs.

my hot take today is that people who want quiet dogs that never initiate interactions and don't ask for pets or play or any kind of engagement are boring :/ even when my dog is annoying me, i'm charmed because he is actively choosing to hang out with me and be my friend! if you don't think that's super cool then i'm really sorry! must be hard for you, get help soon girl (gender neutral)

all i will say about crufts is that the curly coated retriever in the vulnerable breeds ring, who passively tried to grab the ribbon on his handler's jacket when they went around, lives rent free in my mind.
