random 3 am Malevolent thought about exactly how John has Arthur’s eyes
we know that John doesn’t actually control Arthur’s eyes; the Butcher asking him what’s wrong with his eyes. his pupils don’t focus on anything. so if John doesn’t actually possess Arthur’s eyes, how does he see what Arthur sees?
he controls Arthur’s occipital lobe. which would also be why Arthur doesn’t have spacial awareness on his own; i.e. when he ran into the dock early in the series. as when theres something wrong with the eyes themselves, the brain can still process objects, because their occipital lobe is still in tact. however if there is damage to the occipital lobe, it can be lost. if John controls Arthur’s though, he would lose that too. which we see in the series
I know it’s supernatural and it might be silly to explain exactly how these things work but my brain brought it up and I had to express it cause humans are weird, and brains are weird, and John controlling an actual full part of Arthur’s brain I feel in a way adds to the horror of it. like a fucked up puppeteer. not controlling everything, but having just enough control to be vital for their survival. while yes Arthur could, in normal circumstances, survive on his own, obviously, as blind people exist, would he be able to survive the abnormal shit he lands himself in? likely not
OH MY GOD THE LACK OF SPACIAL AWARENESS WOULD ALSO EXPLAIN WHY HE FALLS INTO HOLES SO OFTEN
#AP psychology returning to me for the weirdest uses#this is just a word vomit tbh#brains are weird#this could also extend to John controlling the bits of Arthur’s brain connected to his left hand and foot#which would be on the right side of the brain fun fact#malevolent#malevolent podcast#john doe malevolent#arthur lester malevolent#arthur lester#malevolent spoilers#malevolent ramble#autism moment

People will assume context when none is given.
This isn't me calling out people for doing something wrong. Context assumption when context isn't provided is just how our brains work (the occasional exception being enough awareness in the moment to ask for context).
Our minds are very context sensitive, and we process information based on context to the point that we can literally mishear people if we're mistaken about the context.
We very easily become confused if we can't think of a context, and we tend to assume context when we don't have any just to try and process the information in front of us.
This is worth keeping in mind in general, but especially online when one might very impulsively write a post in response to something. It's easy to leave off the context when doing that, and people are going to assume their own context if none is there.
Maybe they know what you're talking about, but if they don't, they MIGHT fill in those blanks in unfavorable ways 😬

Four hours (my whole shift) on ops today.
I did well! For the first time, I felt like I knew what I was doing at a few points during the shift!
BUT ☝️
I’m out of decisions.
Every call that comes in is full of decisions: Who do I send? Who do I move to cover their area of the city? Do I add police or fire to the call? Do I start them out with lights and sirens or nah? (The answer becomes apparent later, but I can get them moving before that) Then there are decisions to be made whenever an ambulance finishes a call; namely, where do I put them for coverage? But what if they need gas or their shift is almost over?
It took me 20 minutes to do the dishes when I got home because I had to decide how to load the dishwasher. Like, I know bowls go on the top rack, but where does the red bowl go exactly?
Apparently there’s research backing this up, that decision making gets harder as a person makes more decisions.
(Husband just asked me what’s for dinner. Luckily Cory wanted to order pizza so I didn’t have to decide 😅)
I’ve been stewing over whether or not to shower and it’s giving me a headache.
I wish I could just ask someone to make my decisions for the day. Hey, what’s for lunch? Do I need a shower? How much money do I move to savings? What do I need to clean? What chores should I ask Cory to do? And someone would give me optimal answers that would leave me comfy and in good shape for the day.
#🚑#brains are weird#I used to think choosing things was a free action#until I got hit with four hours of constant rapid fire decisions

Semi spinoff of this post.
"X changes the brain" is the most trivially true statement about anything ever. Being alive changes your brain. Every life experience you have changes your brain. The human brain is not a static organ.
"✨💞🌈 Trauma changes the brain... but so does healing ✨💞🌈" Okay? Breathing changes the brain, but so does drinking water.
Learning to play piano changes the brain, which is why no one should learn to play piano before age 25, because 24 year old children are too immature to change their brains that way (do I need a sarcasm tag for that? Probably. That is sarcasm.)
Brains are constantly changing. This is not good or bad. This just is. You cannot prevent your brain from ever changing, except by death. If you don't like the way your brain is right now, don't worry, it will change.
Not to mention, most of you have never seen your brains. Most of you have never seen the brains of the people around you. Most of the people around you have never seen your brain.
Autistic people's brains are different from allistic people's brains, we're told, but not only is autism not diagnosed by brain scans, but no one who's ever bullied or discriminated against me for being autistic has scanned my brain for confirmation first.
Gay people's brains are different from straight people's brains? Okay, so if I'm attracted to someone, should I get a MRI to determine if it's gay attraction or straight attraction?
This isn't how anybody needs to be living their lives.
You can't control your brain. You can't stop your brain from changing. You can't force your brain to change a certain way. Your brain just is. You have to learn to live with it. With your brain. You have no choice.

Playlists about ships/character often surprise me because it shows me how the ppl who create them interpreted random fictional people into a bunch of songs
Like I never would have added I’m just Ken to a cat noir playlist but now I don’t see a cat noir playlist without the song. If that makes sense
#miraculous#miraculous ladybug#cat noir#weird#it’s like having a different fav color than someone#we all see the same character but different things remind us of them#all perspective of the character are usually valid#brains are weird#like I love Marinette bc she has decent anxiety/panic attack rep (in my experience)#but someone else mind not even think of it and love her because you relate with her love life or something#flipping bonkers#ig that’s it but I may post more abt this idk#I think I write more in the tags than the actual post#tehehe

it's objectively a little bit funny the way my guilt/moral ocd is trying to fuck with me right now because it's literally saying "you should have scheduled your psychotic breakdown for a different day... your timing is so inconsiderate to others" as if I like??? had a say in it???

My brain is so fucking weird.
So, you know the expression "be at your wit's end"?
Well, it uses the word 'wit', right? And I know this, I've always used the word wit in this expression, both when speaking and writing. And I know what wit means. And yet.
AND YET!
For some reason my brain has been glitching all this time, and even though I always used wit, a word that I know the meaning of, I was actually thinking of wick. This. Whole. Time.
And this made sense to me! You're at your wit's wick's end, and when it finally runs out so does the fire. You're clearly the fire in this metaphor and you're about to extinguish because there's nothing there to sustain you anymore. You've tried but there's just nothing there.
Except, of course, the expression uses the word wit, not wick. And it took me seeing a literal translation into my first language to realise that the expression uses, indeed, the word wit, which is the one I always used, and not wick, which I have never once used in this expression.
So now my understanding of this expression is completely shattered and I'm feeling very confused at how I mixed wit and wick when I was using the right word when using the expression and know the meaning of both words.
#and apparently the expression means you don't know what to do anymore because you've tried all you could think of#and not that you're at your fucking limit and can't do this anymore#maybe I should just start saying that I'm at my wick's end and confuse everyone with it#shine posts#shine is random#brains are weird#language#that feeling when english is your second language

My brain: Hmm I feel kind of in a mood for writing some seriously raunchy BDSM threesome fic
Also my brain: I think we need to start with about 3000 words of backstory and establishing the plot first

I just woke from an incredibly vivid and realistic dream about my dentist appointment today being cancelled. When I actually woke up I even had my hand holding an invisible phone to my ear.
Alas, I still have to go get my gums attacked

I tried to talk about this before, but I must have done it so badly that people thought I was actually making a factual claim about dopamine, or "pop science," or something.
So let me try again: Neuroscience cannot be used to answer ethical, moral, philosophical, or political questions.
I'm not saying neuroscience shouldn't be used to answer those questions. I'm saying it can't.
The problem isn't "bad science" or "pop science" or "laypeople misunderstanding science." Those things are problems, yes, and there is a lot of neuroscience misinformation going around, but those are not the problems I am talking about. The problem is that these questions are not answerable by this form of human knowledge.
Neuroscience cannot answer the question of whether someone should be punished for violating a law. That is a legal, ethical, political, and philosophical question. (What is law? What is punishment? What is justice? By what authority does government enact laws or punish people who violate them? Divine right? Consent of the governed? Who constitutes "the governed" and how is their consent ensured?)
Neuroscience cannot answer the question of whether someone is "mentally ill" or what condition constitutes a "mental illness." Neuroscience can, in some cases, determine that someone's brain deviates from a statistical average in some way. But the pathologization of that difference -- the classification of difference as "illness" -- is a social, cultural, economic, ethical, philosophical, and political question.
Neurscience cannot tell you how to live your life, how to relate to others, or how best to structure a society. You have to decide that yourself.
