TGWDLM is so intresting to read as estentially Pokey's 'Fix-It Fic' of Hatchetfield and the people who live there. Some intresting notes about this:

Paul is meant to be an Ordinary Guy. Estentially, a 'flat character' who's most notable trait is Disliking Musicals. However, he's the one that Pokey/The Hive have the biggest focus on.

When Paul gets infected, he does a 180. He literally becomes a different guy. And much like a lot of fanon does, it's not like he's gained more personality. Quite the opposite - he's just gone from a guy who doesn't like musicals to a guy/infected meat suit who really does. He's gone from being one kind of 'flat' to another, but to Pokey, this is supposed to be an 'improvement.'

Emma is the 'Villain' of the show, at least from the hive's perspective. They don't care if Paul doesn't see her as one, or anything else about her life and her coming back to Hatchetfield. They just think she deserves to suffer for the simply being the reason Paul doesn't like Musicals. Not caring about a female character's actual character and narrative, just simply her 'negatively' affecting their favourite male character.

Also worth noting that her line in the opening number is 'But he pines after a cute little barista'. Infected Emma literally reduces Emma down to Paul's Love Intrest. She's only palpable if she has no personality outside of that.

As for non Paul and Emma related things:

Charlotte and Sam's marriage is not at all healthy. But 'You Tied Up My Heart' has (infected) Sam convince Charlotte he's 'sorry' and that they could work out. Taking an objectively unhealthy couple, and framing them as It Would Be Good For Them To Stay Together, Actually.

Bill is a flawed father, but not neccarily a bad one. But in Not Your Seed, Infected Alice says she's, well, not his seed. Only focusing on the negatives of him as a parent. I also think it's worth noting that Bill is a Black man, and that it's usually parents of colour that get demonised in fandoms.

Ted is that One Character the 'Author' doesn't like and wants to get rid of as quickly as possible. Hence Ted just getting Shot in the head and that being his death. He just dies because he's an idiot, much like the Character The Fic Writer Doesn't Like does in a lot of fics.

The Hive pulling up two Random Guys to be 'Greg' and 'Stu' in 'Show Stopping Number' could be seen as making 'headcanons' for charcaters that aren't even in the 'story'. May be a stretch on my end, but still.

That's just my analysis of a certain angle. The wonderful thing about TGWDLM is that it can be read multiple different ways, and this is one of mine.

I mean, that's also kind of assuming that you've upset some previously unidentified cultural norm through ignorance rather than affect. ND kids also frequently have the experience of enjoying something normative *in the wrong way* and being rebuked for how they express their interest rather than for simply having the interest ("other 8-13 year old girls like cats, I like cats, why is it that when I subscribe to a magazine about cats or draw cats or read books about cats or talk about cats, I'm doing it wrong? I can't really tell, I guess I'll stop doing those things where people can see them because as far as I can see, only common denominator causing friction is me")

In my experience the problem isn't that you can't see the system or can't predict the rules, it's that you may learn early that people react negatively to the way that you enjoy things, so to seem normal you either stop letting yourself enjoy things or you don't engage with things you enjoy in order to avoid social sanction.

The reflex to pause before sharing an interest or to prevent yourself from reacting to the interest where you might bother other people with the interest is the source of the alienation described in the initial tweet.

"You have to learn the system but it might require thinking about some unpleasant things" just kind of sounds like "you have to lean that people don't like how you act when you are happy, so you should figure out how to act less like yourself when you're happy, or be happy less around people." It's the correct answer to reduce bullying and have a better social fit, and it also is pretty exhausting and awful for your mental health.

I don't know that there's an "answer" here per se, but "neurodivergent kids often develop maladaptive coping strategies with high long-term emotional costs (which we can all agree sucks for them but which may not actually be a preventable issue given the nature of humans as social apes) and may benefit from unpacking that in supportive environments as adults" doesn't seem terribly controversial.

@discoursedrome I guess OP has me blocked, but a common (Though not, of course, universal) experience growing up autistic is *generally not understanding* why some things you enjoy are fine and some will cause your peers to mock, belittle, or occasionally physically attack you.

I remember being in grade school and generally not understanding why it was okay to talk about what I liked about teenage mutant ninja turtles, but if I talked about my little pony the other kids would make fun of me.

Why is playing on the monkey bars during recess okay but sitting and watching some ants makes it okay for other kids to make fun of me.

I've talked to other people about how they figured this stuff out and the constant refrain was "Oh, you just know".

As for adults, the attitude was essentially "It's bad that the other kids do this but nobody can stop it so you have to figure out how to stop provoking the other kids"

The way to do this, of course, is a studied, placid, anonymity.

You don't see the pattern in *which* expressions of genuine enthusiasm provoke retaliation, so *all of them* begin to feel dangerous, the best way to protect yourself is to simply wait until somebody else has voiced an opinion and proved it safe, and then follow that.

I have no doubt that an allistic child attending school in a setting where the vast majority of students and adults were on the autism spectrum would have similar feelings of misalignment and confusion, but that's not something that generally happens during the formative years of allistic people.

I can't stand it anymore, so once I have a long talk with management and take care of a couple of things I need to get done, I'm going to part ways with my current GP clinic. I'm done. I'm so frustrated because I like this doctor, and I like the nurse I see most often, but this stress is actually harmful.

I will have to undertake the monumental fucking task of getting all my medical records, across SIX clinics, transferred to a new clinic.

I will also have to housebreak another fucking doctor. Which is the actual worst part of the process, as the doctor has all the leverage when drawing boundaries, including access to the law and the support of their own clinic, and the patient has virtually no leverage unless there is severe misconduct.

All I can do is leave, which does not negatively affect them. Then I have to wait a year before I can declare a new GP, and start over.

I always found it SUPER weird that Ben never grew up to have an eating disorder, because he literally is the prime case to have one and he just doesn't doesn't. This isn't even a case of me thinking Stephen King should have put in representation based on xyz because it'd make the story better, this is just me pointing out that it doesn't make any sense that Ben didn't fall down pro ana pipeline at some point.

Ben grew up in a household that was unstable from the get go and lacked any control for him, even before his dad died he was a military brat that was most likely lugged around from base to base with no way to make permanent friends. Then his dad dies and everything gets all topsy turvey. His own mother basically tries to force him to eat more than he wants to for emotionally manipulative reasons, enough so that he has to bargain with her on it. He's bullied relentlessly for his weight by pretty much everyone, to such a degree its sometimes all he can think about. The book goes into great detail to explain how cumbersome it is for Ben to move around and how insecure he gets about it. He literally manifested a nightmare version of bev that said shed never love a fatty like him. He gets a fucking letter carved into his stomache for crying out loud. The book is very deliberate in telling us that when Henry killed mikes dog and was rewarded with beer, the connection between violence and affection was made very clear and he began to chase after it for years and years to come, but for some reason, Ben eating nothing but salads for months on end in a vye for revenge against an asshole track coach for being mean to him based on his weight, and then being rewarded after left no negative impact. Sure, you can argue that Ben is smarter than henry and less easy to manipulate, but eating disorders don't happen because the afflicted perspn is vain or shallow or stupid, although having low self confidence and being easily swayed certainly helps, it happens because of a lack of control and identity. You can't control much but you can control how you look and eat, so you become obsessed with that.

This is also weird when you compare it to everyone elses childhood trauma and how it affects them. Bev was coddled and worried over for so long she was easily taken advantage of by men who wanted to do that same thing. Bill stuttered so much that even as an adult with perfect speech he struggles to be totally honest with his wife or say the right thing. Richie was a target of homophobia and it shaped his act into a mysoginistic and homophobic stand up routine he didn't even write himself because he couldn't risk being truthful about anything. Stanley was so focused on forgetting about the trauma from it and moving on that when he was forced to confront it as an adult he killed himself. Mike spent so long on the outside he didn't even hesitate to accept he'd be the one to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Even Eddie started taking non prescibed addictive medication due to the childhood of relying on imaginary drugs to heal imaginary problems. Yet Ben's weight is not an issue.

Ben reminds me a lot of those gym bros who haven't had a piece of chocolate in like 3 years and if they ever did again they'd SNAP and kill someone. Idk, i just feel like its a potentially interesting theme stephen could have tackled. If i had to guess tho, Stephen probably didn't think of it because 1. knowledge of ED's has always been very skewed, especially in the 80's. Even now ppl still think only teenage girls get it. And 2. Stephen kings evident fatphobia would never allow him to see Ben's weight loss as anything less than perfectly positive. Idk, how do you guys feel about this?

Lowkey thinking abt how Tobias not allowing fate to have its intended course in his life does tie absurdly well into his habit of severely changing other people's lives too as soon as he meets them. He wasn't meant to be in most of those people's lives but by changing his own fate now he is there & as a result is affecting how their lives go as well, be it through saving them (consciously or indirectly) or dooming them (consciously or indirectly)

How to Write Realistic Characters in Your Stories

Writing realistic characters can be challenging because there's a lot to consider. Even though I've touched on this subject before, it's a complex topic that requires vast knowledge to get it right. Here's a guide on what to consider when writing people in your stories:

1. Similarities to Real People: Just like in real life, your characters need to share traits with real people. This helps readers connect with your story and characters on a more personal level.

2. Negative Traits: It's important to explore your characters' negative traits to make them more believable. For example:

- People often think of themselves first because it's part of our DNA to protect and care for ourselves. Your characters should share these qualities.

- People pretend to be something they aren't or act differently in front of others due to fear of not being liked. This affects almost everyone at some point.

- People are easily distracted and often miss important lessons or moments that contribute to their growth.

- People are dishonest at times to protect themselves, making it hard to fully trust them.

3. Outside Influence: Your characters are also influenced by external factors, just like you are in real life. Consider these suggestions to help you along the way:

- People tell you what to think, feel, believe, and how to act. They often tell you that you're not good enough. These are common issues we go through as humans, making it important to your stories.

4. Realism vs. Idealism: While we sometimes want to write stories filled with fairy tales of a perfect world, sadly, that doesn't exist. Thinking about how the beasts would deal with a mortal partner's mortality catching up to them. Here's some quick thoughts on that.

Content Warning: death (via old age or sickness) and murder (because these guys do not handle it well.)

Shadow Milk seems like the one who deals with the idea of his partner's mortality the best, up until his partner is on death's door- if its sickness, he'll stop at nothing to find a way to cure it. If its age, though...

I think he'd try to find a way to make his partner immortal, too. But when that fails, I think he'd immortalize them as a puppet. Its not the real them, no, but its them from before age started to take them from him. Its them in whatever the 'best' period of their life was.

After they pass he uses it to cope but he has to control the simulacrum's actions so it actually just makes him feel worse because its obviously not them. It looks like what they looked like at one point, it acts how he remembers them acting, but how he remembers them isn't the same as how they actually were. But he doesn't stop because he'd rather try to convince himself of the lie they're still around than live with the truth that they're gone.

The illusion/puppet he makes progressively becomes less and less convincing as his memories are altered and exaggerated with time and repetition. In their absence, Shadow Milk starts to glorify them in his memory, completely disregarding any of their flaws or negative aspects that made them an actual full person; Which then makes the puppet act progressively less and less how they actually did.

Eventually probably disregards the simulacrum as its no longer even slightly convincing. But sometimes, when he thinks about them again and his heart starts aching, he conjures it up again to try to live the lie that they're still here again, just for a little bit longer. It always falls apart again, but there's brief moments where he can almost convince himself, so he keeps doing it.

Burning Spice is. Complicated! Would also want to make his partner immortal probably, but if that's proven to be impossible... I think he 'mercy' kills them, before age can affect them too much. When their hands start shaking, their memory begins to slip, their body slowly turning to dust beneath them, so slow they can hardly tell its happening- but Burning Spice has seen time claim a hundred thousand lives before, and can see it happening to them all too clearly.

Burning Spice doesn't want to let time take his partner from him, so he does it himself. Having control over their demise makes him feel better about it, if only slightly. Doesn't let them know its going to happen, because he wants their last memory of him to be pleasant. Just embraces them- and then promptly snaps their neck. Quick. Painless. Over before they could ever even know it happened.

He does view it as an actual mercy in a way, but its mostly a matter of him needing to feel like he was in control of when and how they died as opposed to them being taken from him. Change and destruction is his domain, he does not like it when those things are happening beyond his control, so he takes control of the situation himself.

Burning Spice is also quick to redirect any other emotion into anger because that's easier to manage, so the stages of grief he goes through are all just filtered directly into Anger and used as fuel to destroy more things. No one else would even be able to tell he's mourning at all, but deep down, he is, even though he doesn't want to. He's seen this happen over and over again, it shouldn't affect him anymore. He's angry at himself for letting it affect him. For letting himself grow attached to something- someone- he knew would be nothing but ash beneath his feet within a century in the first place. And yet...

Mystic Flour would perhaps put some effort in looking into how to make her partner immortal, just so that they could see everything else be reduced to flour with her before they both also were reduced to nothing. But she's not too torn up about it if unable to.

She starts to treat her aging partner as if they were already dead at a certain point, which certainly doesn't feel great for them. Comforting them about their inevitable and rapidly approaching fate is not a very nice thing to hear when they are currently still alive, probably have at least a few years of life left in them, and would probably like to enjoy those last few years rather than just think about their approaching death the whole time.

If their old age comes with any particularly high amounts of pain or memory loss, she's likely to speed up the process as a 'mercy'; Inflicting them with the Pale Ailment, which kills them within the day.

The whole day she holds and comforts them until they are reduced to flour, telling them soon they will feel nothing- no joy, yes, but also no pain. That there's nothing to fear. She sits there for a little longer after they're gone, still speaking comfort. Then she gets up and leaves; She feels nothing about it. Nothing at all.

Yet... a part of her, buried deep under layers of apathy, does wish they had lasted longer. Been at her side to see the rest of the world be reduced to flour first. Oh well.

Also, while I can't give proper thoughts until she's released, I think Eternal Sugar would probably Sleeping-Beauty her partner. Lock them in an eternal rest where they're basically dead, but their body does not age or rot further, and they're technically still breathing, so its like they're still there with her! (<- Coping extremely hard.)

Part 2

As the bats arrive at the scene, they see goons laying down unconscious with bullet holes scattered everywhere. From their trained eyes, they could see that none of the men were harmed. Not even injured.

They stealthily snoop around looking for evidence or any clue of what's happening when they see an open door leading down the basement. Entering the door leads to a staircase down underground into what is presumed to be a secret lab.

Batman: Scarecrow's lab. Spoiler, Robin. Gather evidence while Black Bat and I investigate further.

Spoiler and Robin: Yes.

The further along they go, the more tubes of green liquids they see. If this amount of fear gas is released in Gotham, even neighboring cities might get affected. They prepare themselves for an ambush when suddenly, they see Scarecrow hanging upside down more bloodied than the goons outside.

They move closer and suddenly, a small light catches their eyes and when they turn, they see Danny sitting on the workbench with a cigarette in one hand and a tin of beer in another.

They prepare themselves for a fight when suddenly, Danny speaks.

Danny: Hey, you got a cure or something for the gas thingy? I don't really care but I would rather not see my family and friends dead and their voices screeching my name.

Startled, Batman takes out an antidote for the fear gas and throws it to Danny. Danny catches it and touches it before jabbing it on his arm.

Batman: What are you doing here?

Danny: Hello to you too Mr. Batman. I'm just here to spend some excess energy. You can take away the guy. No need to thank me.

-30 minutes ago-

As Danny walks down the alley, he can feel the emotions lingering in the city. Fear, despair, anger. If he is a hormonal teenager, these emotions would have influenced him heavily. Fortunately, he is now a full grown adult from a human standpoint and a kid by ghost standard.

However, he also doesn't like these lingering emotions in the air. Unlike Amity Park where the emotions are quite spread out, the emotions here are quite centered. Sensing the source, he sees a huge asylum that reeks of not only negative emotions but also dark magic and divinity.

Yeah, he is not touching that with a 10 foot pole. Suddenly, a burst of fear comes from a warehouse somewhere in the distance. Danny flies there to investigate when he sees the warehouse fully guarded by armed men.

Seeing that none of them looks like good guys plus the burst of fear, Danny lands in front of the building detransformed and takes out 2 batons from his long coat.

The goons start to shout as they see Danny coming close but when they see he doesn't bother with their warning, they start shooting. What they don't expect however is the guy to dodge all of their bullets and then knock them out right after.

When Danny enters the warehouse, all the goons turn to him. If he is in a good mood, he would have made a joke or two. Unfortunately for them, Danny is not really into jokes right now. So he rushes towards the nearest goon while they are still stunned.

It's not before Danny knocks down a few of the goons do they react and reach for their guns. After all, they fully expect the bats or the birds to attack them but not a random guy wearing a long coat with a pair of batons.

One by one, the goons fall as Danny ricochets from one to another. He moves so fast that at some point the goons start to just shoot randomly hoping to hit him.

But alas, for a highly trained assassin, all of these goons are easy work if he wants to kill them. When Danny stops, all that is left are bodies on the ground unconscious. Looking at his coat that is grazed, Danny frowns but continues towards a door that screams "the boss is here".

Entering it leads Danny down a staircase into a room full of tubes. Green liquids fill the tubes as they let out an ominous glow. Touching a drop that falls on the floor, Danny can feel the essence of fear coming from it.

Suddenly, one of the tubes starts to move and empty itself as green gas starts to fill the room. Danny accidentally catches a whiff of the gas and suddenly, his eyesight starts to blur and he can hear screaming all around him.

When it becomes clear again, all he sees is the dead bodies of his friends and families. Dad, mom, Jazz, Sam, Tucker, Vlad, Wes, Valerie and even Cass. All of them, laying on the ground with blood flowing from their bodies. Suddenly, all of them start to chant his name.

"All of this is your fault" One of them says.

"Why can't you save us?" Another one screams.

"You cause this!" All of them shout together.

However, throughout it all Danny barely flinches. His face blank and his body unmoving. He remembers when this was once his nightmare. Living everyday in fear for his loved ones to die.

But all of that has long change. Danny has experienced the nightmare so many times that he has become numb to it. Especially since he knows these are all illusions.

Since all of his five senses are not working, Danny releases a small burst of omnidirectional ectoplasm, which is a technique he learns from Pandora. He called it Ectolocation. When the ectoplasm bounces back, he can feel a figure slowly approaching him. When the figure enters his range, he quickly swings his baton knocking the guy unconscious.

Danny sets the guy upside down then finds a chair to rest. Taking out a can of beer and a pack of cigarettes, Danny waits as he wonders when the vigilantes or the polices are gonna arrive.
