making lots of real fun progress on the drk au outline!! haven’t started writing it at all yet (probably gonna try to start after xmas cause like. that last week is entirely empty space lol) but I’m figuring out lore and themes and how i want everything to connect! I’ve also got a real solid idea now for the very first chapter and how im introducing noelle, her changed family situation, Susie, and the first dark world so THATS all been a thrill lol. this au has been living in my brain for like, two years now! and so so so soon im gonna get to write it for real :333

I NEED TO TALK ABOUT THE NEW DELTARUNE CHAPTERS OR I WILL EXPLODE
I wanna primarily talk about my take on the knight’s identity, but I’ll sprinkle a few other thoughts of mine in if I can, cause HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Anyway
MASSIVE spoilers for Deltarune chapters 3 & 4.

So
To me, it’s down to Dess & Carol Holiday.
Like
Look at this design.

Those are DEFINITELY antlers.
Toby knows his audience.
He’s poked fun of it in the game before (ie the theorist rant about Mike)
To me, he wouldn’t just include a design detail like that & NOT expect us all to think about the Holiday’s
So either he intentionally made them look like horns
Or it’s a red herring
& I highly doubt it’s the latter.
I DO think there’s a potential red herring, but it’s not in the knight’s design.
SPEAKING OF TOBY KNOWING HIS AUDIENCE & LIKELY HAVING THESE SPRITES HAVE SPECIFIC DETAILS
THOSE HAND HOLES ARE NOT A COINCIDENCE, & I WILL DIE ON THIS HILL!!
However, I don’t think it’s as mind blowing as it may seem at first.
Most of the fandom already agrees that Gaster has SOMETHING to do with the plot of Deltarune.
The hand holes don’t feel like something that indicates that Gaster is the knight.
Instead, it feels like it merely connects the knight TO Gaster.
Either the knight serves the former scientist (since there is no knight without a leader they follow)
OR
They BOTH are of equal power, people who were once of the light now prisoners of the dark.
Whether they have the same goal is… not clear.
However, the very fact that we now have solid (even if unspoken & rather interpretive) confirmation that the knight and Gaster ARE related
Is a big deal
Even if we all kinda knew that already.
NOW
Back to the Holiday’s.
I actually played through chapter 3 & 4 myself without looking anything up beforehand.
Yes, I missed some things, but from what I DID see, I first came to the conclusion that Carol, Noelle’s mother, was the knight.
In chapter 4, Kris talks to someone on the phone.
Kris seems to be working with someone who wants the dark worlds to spread & grow, hence why they stop the player from reading the bunker code written inside Dess’ guitar (keep that last fact in mind).
We don’t know for certain who this voice belongs to.
Is it the knight?
Gaster?
The same person Spamton spoke with back before his fall from fame?
It all seemed ambiguous
Until this happened.


Kris tells the person on the phone that they failed to stop Susie from getting the guitar.
The person then says they’ll be “right there…”
Which leads to


You cannot tell me with a straight face that this is a coincidence.
Noelle KNOWS her mom’s work hours.
Why would Carol suddenly come home so early?
If Carol was not the one on the phone, then someone or something HAD to come over to Noelle’s.
The voice specifically says “I’ll be right there.”
Not “I’ll stop her”
Or “I’ll send someone.”
“I’ll be right there.”
Carol is the ONLY person who arrives at the house before Susie’s kicked out & Kris follows her.
Not to mention
Like

Toby didn’t highlight “you” in RED merely to create emphasis.
He rarely does that.
We see him highlight stuff in YELLOW in this chapter, sure
But the only other thing he’s highlighted in red (from my recollection) was when Noelle talked about listening in for the presumed “mouse” while she & Susie wait in Dess’ room
& the red text hinted for you to make noise.
Considering that hint was for YOU & not KRIS (since you’re separated from Kris during this scene)
Me thinks it legitimately means something
& wasn’t just Toby deciding to be a lil funny & switch up his text colors for kicks (even if that WOULD be hilarious…)
THE POINT IS
I highly doubt Carol’s talking to Kris in the above scene, or at least, not JUST Kris.
I think she’s talking to the player.
The “you.”
We know from chapter 2’s Snowgrave route (specifically when you are about to defeat Spamton) that “you” refers to the player, not Kris.
Carol’s line here feels intentional.
ANOTHER INTERESTING THING


This COULD be seen as like
A metaphorical thing
(ie to show how “cold” Carol is toward others)
But considering Noelle’s whole thing in chapter 2
& the background ambiance when she arrives
& how Susie comments on FEELING the ACTUAL temperature drop…
It just feels
Too odd to be purely metaphorical.
Do I think this confirms she is the knight?
No.
To me, it merely shows that Carol is a PART of whatever this whole thing is.
Carol COULD be the knight
But to me, it doesn’t feel as thematically fitting as Dess being the knight.
Cause like
Dess is MISSING.
We don’t know HOW she went missing.
No one hasn’t seen her in quite a long time.
It makes sense that Dess, either willingly or forcefully, became the knight.
& when I say “became”
I mean like
MORPHED into it.
She IS the knight.
It is no suit of armor she can take off.
It is no dark world form she can shed if she were to enter the light world (assuming she ever could).
She IS the knight, & the knight is HER.
She is forever warped by a past event we have yet to see.
Plus
Carol feels like she has a few intentional red herrings that would make fans point to HER as the knight
Mainly the kitchen katana that she apparently uses to cut fruitcake with.
THAT feels like a straightforward red herring
Cause it’s TOO obvious.
Besides
The knight doesn’t wield a katana.
If Carol were the knight, I feel like the knight’s sword would be a lot more elegant looking, more katana-like.
It wouldn’t surprise me to see Carol KNOW about her eldest daughter’s fate & actively be working with her.
…
Also WHY IS THERE A NOTE IN DESS’ GUITAR??
Who put that there?
WHEN did they put that there?
I doubt it was Carol. That feels like a weird place to put a code. She feels like the character to have the code on HER at all times.
The code was likely from Dess herself.
Why was it put there?
To remind Dess how to open it (likely causing her to explore the shelter & later go “missing)?
Or perhaps
Somehow
It was written after her disappearance
As a quiet call for help
For SOMEONE to open the bunker & end the nightmare.
Carol could still know about the code without being the one to write it.
If Kris can spot the note so easily after only looking through the guitar ONCE
We can wager that Dess’ MOTHER, who LIVES in that house, likely found out about it at some point, ESPECIALLY if she truly is a part of the madness somehow.
Assuming this is all true, I wonder if Carol never plucked the note out because doing that would require breaking the guitar in some way, & she does not have the heart to do it.
That idea’s more headcanon-y than anything
Cause I’d just love to have a scene like that play out
Where she mumbled to herself about just getting rid of the damn note
But can’t without hurting the strings
Showing that she DOES still care. She DOES have humanity.
It’s just buried in the freezing cold.
…
… so while this seems like a good ending spot
I wanna say one last thing.

The later chapters don’t HAVE to abide by a set formula.
I keep seeing people argue whether this or that was the secret boss
& I’m just like
Fellas
It doesn’t have to match chapter 1 & 2’s format.
Hell, chapter 2 diverted from chapter 1’s format by making IT’s secret boss someone you encounter in game no matter how you play, a stark contrast from Jevil, who you can play the entire game without ever seeing a LICK of dialogue about him.
I think, out of everything, we shouldn’t worry about “who the secret boss is.”
No.
We should be more concerned about the shadow crystals & where they end up.
Cause APPARENTLY
DEFEATING THE KNIGHT IN CHAPTER 3 LEADS TO SUSIE CHIPPING OFF A PIECE OF THEIR SWORD
& WHEN YOU GO TO PICK UP THE SHARD
YOU ADDITIONALLY GET A SHADOW CRYSTAL!!
At first, I assumed the shadow crystal came FROM the sword, but that may not be entirely right.
Even still, I think the crystals either come FROM the knight
Or the knight & the crystals come from the same place.
Now, how specific characters get a hold of it
Is… up in the air.
We see Gerson hand one to Susie in chapter 4.
He tells her that someone likely wanted him to use it, but he didn’t find it interesting, so he never really did anything with it.
Perhaps someone (the knight, Carol, Gaster, who knows) is giving certain Darkeners shadow crystals for some unknown reason.
Whatever the reason is, considering the bosses to get these shadow crystals all tie to EXTREMELY hard boss fights, it’s likely a source of power the corrupts the user, just as it did with Jevil & Spamton.
So
By that logic
I suppose the knight IS the secret boss
But more so that the secret to the boss is that it’s winnable
Which feels
Very hilarious & overall Toby-ish to me, not gonna lie. IWNWODMWOCKSOMXOSMXODCM
But uh
Seriously.
We gotta look at how these bosses connect on a far less shallow level. We can’t be too occupied with interpretive patterns in the chapters’ varying story beats
Cause those story beats aren’t always gonna be repeated.
After all, repeating story beats make the rest of the potential chapters predictable
& I doubt Toby’s gonna be doing that…
Anyway uh

Aside from how we finally got concrete confirmation that monsters bleed (so the whole “when you kill sans, you cut through some ketchup he had hidden away to make it look like blood” debate no longer matters)
Ralsai directly addressing how there MUST be another ending to their story (& suggesting that Toby’s “one ending” claim may be tied to the prophecy specifically)
Dead monsters having the capacity to be “revived” in the dark world, even if we can never be sure if it’s really “them”

Deltarune Chapter 3 and 4 RANDOM THOUGHTS
Spoilers so it's going under the cut! This is just me gushing about the madness
Geez I have like 50 different things I want to do art for and I can't focus on any of them long enough to start, SOB
Was NOT expecting Susie to find out that Darkners are objects immediately upon starting up the chapter. I'm glad she took it as well as she did, though! Still think this may come up much much harder later.
Holy crap Tenna's designs and animations just hit like a truck LOL. It wasn't until much later that I was like "wait...this guy is not getting recruited to Castle Town, is he. There's no way those sprites will get integrated."
Disappointed we did not get a proper Susiezilla sequence, I wanted that!
All the banter of them sitting around playing Legend of Kris was adorable
Did not expect Lanino-Elnina-Rouxls Kaard DISASTER THROUPLE???

JUNE DEVLOG
June DEVLOG time for OMORI THE DREAMER and...some big things have happened.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
In even more contrast to prior optimism, it seems the entire DREAMER release timeline will be overhauled. Due to the size of the story, the assets that relies on other's to complete, and the large amount of new assets far outweighing the amount in the PRELUDE...
From now on, we will be following a "CHAPTER BY CHAPTER", or in accordance to DREAMER's naming conventions, a "BOOK BY BOOK" release schedule. So, instead of waiting for the entire game to come out and getting overloaded with way too much content, books will be released in this sequence; BOOK 1 - KEL BOOK 2 - AUBREY BOOK 3 - HERO BOOK 4 & 5 - BASIL + ???
The final release of Book 4 & 5 will be the entire game. Each new release will include the chapters before, and save files will carry over. I believe this will be better overall for development, and for you guys to experience the story without being overwhelmed. The current plan is for BOOK 1 to release in the fall, and for BOOK 2 to release before the end of the year. I want this project completed in 2026, and with the additional time, hopefully everything will be at a higher quality. The narrative was already built in this book by book format, so nothing is actually changing besides release dates!
I'm sorry if this is frustrating to hear, but I'm confident this is better overall for both players and definitely for the team. We are not in development hell–people just have actual lives and are not being paid to work on this, so it can't be a priority. Still, the goal is a timely release schedule, with each book getting its own release trailer. I hope you can still look forward to the releases ^^
PROGRESS (BOOK ONE):
Due to the time of the year and a certain game releasing, a lot of the team was busy. Progress significantly slowed, but will hopefully pick back up again. Unfortunately, I cannot help with tile-set creation as it's outside of my wheelhouse (though I'll do my best to learn in the future!) so that team has a lot of pressure on them to handle SECTION TWO tile-sets on their own. Hopefully in the future I can help carry the burden. For now, it'll take as long as it needs to to avoid stress, but hopefully the internal deadlines can still be met!
Music is coming along amazing, and once again, there is going to be a large soundtrack coming with the chapter. Lots to see and lots to hear!
As of now, I'm making as much art and surrounding assets as I can while waiting for SECTION TWO to be ready for programming and writing. Progress is steady but certainly not at the breakneck pace it used to be. I got severely burnt out after continuing to work on THE DREAMER right after PRELUDE release and churning out SECTION ONE...but I am recovering! I'll bounce back passionately soon enough! I'm learning more and more how to rely on others and be patient with myself.
Battling is in the process of being overhauled and fixed up, and that will be available for the Book 1 release still!
For SECTION THREE, progress is also steady, though similarly significantly slowed. Still, nearly all maps are actively being mad, so it's looking very promising. Bug fixing still needs to happen for SECTION ONE, though...
CONCLUSION:
Wish us luck. A lot of luck. And for more pixel artists to sign up. This mod is on the right track and will certainly be completed! Just...at a more steady pace than originally assumed. On the bright side, that means you guys don't have to wait as long for more of THE DREAMER! Yay!

Recommended listening:
Consider the humble, practical, and skeptical Vessel. The man who has never knocked on wood and gleefully walks under ladders. The man who once unmatched with the same girl across three different dating apps because she wouldn’t stop talking about the moon’s position at the moment and how it was the prime time for them to discuss their hopes and dreams about each other. Yes…he is the same one illuminated by the blue light of his phone at 1 AM, frantically Googling the most batshit things (pictured below).
It was hopeless. All jokes aside, he was miserable. It was like he was living a double life. That first conversation you two had seemed like a lifetime ago. He finally accepted that you had genuinely wanted to get to know him and the easiest way to get him talking was to talk music. And then you both pushed each other away. Tragic. A missed opportunity. But when he took that punch for you, tasted his own blood, he felt sworn to you. Like some brainless knight desperate to court you by fighting off bandits or some shit. And he liked it. But you couldn’t know that. Mothmansdad (which, by the way, what the fuck was he thinking with that) couldn’t even drop hints that maybe Vessel’s feelings for you were so gentle and tender that he experienced something like cuteness aggression.
The whole fake profile was a manifestation of his cowardice. On one hand he realized you were more willing to share yourself with a stranger than with anyone in person. You could hide behind “… is typing,” choosing your words without them seeing how it killed you relive things. He knew about your ex now. He knew about your situation with the guy in the alley. His persona knew more than he did, and in a sick way, he was envious of the stranger he was online with you. When you’d come to work he fabricated his own personal hell making sure not to reference something you two talked about. Or to touch you. To ask if you had gotten some sleep after telling him about all the others before the guy in the alley. To hold you. To once again show you that submission and fealty he felt when you cleaned his split lip. It was making him act stupid. Everything had to be expressed in the sickest, weirdest way. As he settles in bed for the night, finally, he concedes that he’s fucked. He has no true outlet. Except for his dreams.

It was the lighthouse one again. Vessel is a desperate, lonely lighthouse keeper who begs your ruthless father for your hand in marriage. You’re practically stolen away from your spoiled little life and are forced to live with this man whose gaze betrays that he wants to eat you alive. Tonight, Vessel gets to a new part of the dream. Like an unlocked area. It’s past the awkward wedding ceremony where you refuse to kiss his lips and he’s forced to place a desperate, needy kiss on your cheek. No. Now it’s the wedding night and a storm shakes the drafty keeper’s cottage where you stare out the window at the churning sea, holding a tartan shawl tight against you. You look like a babe in the woods. Vessel reaches out to touch your shoulder, causing you to shiver and gasp. He likes it. He likes that you share his name and that he has the chance to mould how you react to him from here on out. He presses against you, nibbling your ear.
“I’ve never known a man…husband,” you say in a meek voice. Fuck. The dream is so vivid he feels his erection press hard against your plush ass, the layers of his wool trousers and your soft petticoats be damned. Your dress and shawl suddenly fall to the floor, and Vessel’s hands wrap around your soft middle to pull you to the small bed.
He’s falling backwards, hard.
He’s in a foggy field, blood in his mouth like that night in the alley behind work. His chest heavy with a mail shirt of some sort.
“Get up, boy.”
Vessel sits up faster than humanly possible to see you there. The Lady of Shallot incarnate across from him on a rock. He crawls towards you frantically as your legs open. Warm, inviting femininity awaits him as he reaches you. But no slick folds greet his tongue, and he falls through again.
He’s lying on your chest in a bed, crying. You’re scratching his scalp softly, comforting him, but why’s he crying? He’s blubbering on about something but his dream words don’t make sense. You whisper his name, and he moves to look down at you, bracing on his forearms.
Vessel blinks.
He’s in that foggy garden again, but this time you’re just you. His princess. The upper hand belongs to him now as he gropes your hips and whispers promises of pleasure and making you his with a rough whisper. Your pretty dress pools around your waist as his gaze flicks down to watch how he fucks you into the dewy grass. Vessel bites his lip as he feels your hand trail up his abs but jolts when he feels another, more familiar, hand slide over his pubic bone from behind.
“Do it.”
It’s his voice, but it’s not his face he feels. It’s cold, bone-like. But that doesn’t stop him from nuzzling back against himself.
“Do it.”
It’s your voice now, and his hand is around your throat. Vessel pulls out and away, horrified.
He’s in a velvet chair in a dark room, legs spread as you straddle him, moving your hips in little figure 8s. As you bounce rhythmically to the music that will only exist in this dream and run your hands through your hair, Vessel reaches out to touch your breasts but you stop him.
“You haven’t paid enough to deserve that.”
“Wha-“
He’s on his knees in the same room. The tightness of the leather harness around his chest is ignored thanks to the tender way you caress his face and coo at him. Calling him a good boy. He leans up to kiss you because, in this dream, he knows in his heart you’ll kiss him back.
His lips meet that guy’s fist again in the alley.
His lips meet your fist in the alley.
He’s sexting you as mothmansdad.
He’s young again. This isn’t a dream, it’s a memory. He’s having his heart crushed. He’s learning that nothing worthwhile is meant for him. But this time it’s not her saying it, it’s you. Tribute for the Dragon (18/18)

The flight back to your kingdom was long and Sylus did not stop until you were across the border. At that point you had told him to land near a stream. He didn’t question why, just dropped down as soon as he spotted some water.
“Are you alright?” he asked for the tenth time. “Do you need a rest? Something to drink? Eat?”
“No. I am fine.” you looked at him now, still covered head to toe in copious amounts of blood. It soaked into his hair and his skin. Every inch of him was died the same crimson as his eyes. “But you need to clean that off.”
Sylus looked down at himself and nodded. You gestured to the stream and he started washing the blood away. You tore off a piece of your skirt hem and dunked it into the water and wiped at his face.
You remembered being sat in the room underground when you heard the bells and alarms ringing. You had know immediately it was Sylus. The unending screams of pain and fear only confirmed it. Then that fucking general had come in to try and take you away, to try and threaten Sylus into letting him live, but his efforts were in vain. They had all died. Sylus ripped every last one of them to shreds just to get back to you.
You had been surprised for a moment when instead of the Sylus you knew a full dragon had busted in through the door. But you knew it was your dragon the second you saw him. He was large, black and red scaled armor with silver horns and spines down his back. His eyes were the same kind of molten red you had seen from Tengya on the beach, as if instead of eyes two pools of magma churned in his pupils. And all that you could think of was how happy you were to see him.
He was back to his normal form now, albeit completely naked, but that hardly mattered. Soon you would be home and all of this would be nothing but a horrible nightmare. You couldn’t wait that long to get this blood off though. So you helped him clean, wiping whatever blood you could off of him. Scooping water into your hands and scrubbing it out of his hair until it was silver again.
He reclined against you, staring up at your face. “I am so sorry.” he said. “I should never have left. They never should have been able to take you. This was all my fault.”
“No. It was not your fault, Sylus.”
“I left you. I left you all alone. I should have taken you to the village at the very least. I was insane to leave you by yourself.”
“Sylus--”
“What if they had hurt you worse than they did? What if they had done something to our child? I would never forgive myself. If…if the worse had happened…” tears cut rivers down his cheeks, “I don’t even want to think about it.”
“Then don’t.” you hugged him. “I am safe. Our baby is safe. What is done is done. We cannot change it. But you ensured that no one would ever come to harm us again and that is good enough for me.”
“I love you. I do.” he turned to face you fully, “I love you more than anything and I swear this will never happen again. I will defend you, body and soul with everything that I am.”
“Sylus…”
“You, the family we are growing, is my entire life. I love you both so much and I do not know what forces in the world allowed me to have you but I will thank them every day.” he pressed a kiss to your forehead.
“I love you too. I will love you forever and no matter what happens, I will always be here by your side. No force from the heavens, hells or this material world will take me from you. I promise.” You brought him close, kissing him tenderly. “I love you, Sylus. I will always love you.”
You sat there by the stream, half covered in blood and crying as you held one another. You were safe. You were together. That was all that mattered.

Sylus was anxious. He didn’t get anxious a lot but he was anxious as he stood pacing back and forth outside the room you were giving birth in. The women helping you had insisted it wasn’t a place for the men to enter and Sylus wanted to be respectful but with every pained cry that came from you on the other side of the door his agitation grew.
“You’re going to drive a rut into the floor.” your father warned him. “She’s in good hands. She and the baby will be fine.”
“I should be in there.” Sylus snapped. “Why can I not be?”
“Well, for one, your tail hasn’t stopped swishing like an angry cat’s. You’d probably hit someone or knock something over.” he explained, “But it is just how things are done. The women handle the birth, we cut the umbilical cord after they’re out.”
Every instinct in Sylus was telling him to get in the room. He needed to protect you. Protect you from what, he had no idea. But he felt so helpless and useless out here!
There was another loud cry from inside and Sylus snapped to the door. That was it! He wasn’t staying out here!
He opened the door to find you knelt on the floor. You looked up and smiled in relief, holding a hand out for him. “Sylus,”
He knelt next to you, “Right here. I’m right here.”
“He shouldn’t be--” one of the women tried to say.
“No! Don’t leave!” you squeezed his hand, “Please don’t leave!”
“I won’t. I’m not going anywhere.” Sylus shot a glare at the others, daring them to try and remove him. The others shrugged and went back to what they were doing.
“It hurts.” you muttered through clenched teeth. “It really fucking hurts!”
“I know. I know it does, little bird.” he wiped the sweat from your brow. “But it’ll be worth it. We’ll have our little one soon, you just have to endure it for a little longer.”
“Can’t believe I let you do this to me!” you snapped. “I hope you never have another rut!” He figured you were talking out of pain and didn’t mean what you were saying.
One of the women got behind you. “Alright, you’re ready. Time to start pushing. Deep breath, your body knows what to do. Gravity is gonna help us get this baby out quick.”
After several long tense minutes of you holding onto him for dear life, screaming and whimpering in pain as you pushed, the baby was out. A different kind of scream filled the air as your child took its first breath.
“You have a daughter.” the woman holding the baby said. “A perfectly healthy baby girl.”
Sylus cut the umbilical cord with his claw and let them wipe the baby off a bit before settling her in your arms. “She’s beautiful.” you were crying. The moment the baby’s head rested on your chest her cries stilled into little whimpers.
“Most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen.” Sylus couldn’t believe what he was looking at. This tiny thing was yours? They looked so normal, so human. “Hello, my heart,” he said. He receded the claws on his hands so he could hold her. “If you aren’t the most perfect thing in this world I do not want to know what could be better.”
“She is so little…” you cooed. “And she looks so human.”
“I told you she would. But make no mistake, this is a strong and fearsome dragon. That reminds me,” Sylus pulled a small jar out of his pocket. Inside was a small portion of the salve he had gotten from Tengya. He spread a small patch on the baby’s chest.
Once you had enough time alone, just Sylus, you, and the baby you began to let in the others.
“There’s my grandchild.” your father walked in. He came over and kissed your forehead. “You did so well, sweet pea.”
“Thanks papa.” you smiled. “Isn’t she the most precious thing?”
“That she is. So, did you two have a name picked out?” he asked.
“Selene.” you said. Your baby opened her eyes for the first time and you got a shock of brilliant red eyes, just like her father. You smiled, kissing her downy head. “Our little moon flower.”

As the years passed your family grew. You had two beautiful little girls and a third on the way. You were sitting at the mouth of the cave watching as Sylus was teaching Selene how to fly. Her wings had grown in fully and ever since there was not a moment she was on the ground. Your younger was sitting with you stewing in jealousy that she couldn’t go flying with them.
“Mama!” Ruby whined, “I want to go flying too! When will my wings grow in?”
“It will happen soon enough.” you assured her, “Besides, growing wings isn’t great. It’s really itchy and your back gets all scabby. Kinda like your horns did when they started growing, remember that? Don’t be in such a hurry.”
She crossed her arms and continued to pout until Sylus and Selene touched back down. “Did you see me mama!” Selene came running up to you. “I was flying all by myself!”
“I know! You did so well, sweetie!” you hugged her. “You’re getting to be real good.”
“She’s a natural.” Sylus came up and ruffled her hair. “Soon enough you’ll be flying circles around me.”
“Daddy!” your younger one yelled at him, “I want to fly too!”
“Ruby,” you warned, “Don’t yell. Ask nicely next time you want to go flying.”
Her frown deepened. “Mama’s a meanie!”
“I’m not being mean--”
“Meanie!”
“Hey,” Sylus snapped at her. “That’s not very nice to say. Your mama is just trying to teach you to be polite and now you’ve gone and hurt her feelings.”
“But--”
“No buts. Apologize to your mama and maybe I’ll take you out for a flight.” Sylus turned her around and pushed her towards you.
“I’m sorry mama.” she said, staring down at the ground. “Can I go flying now?”
“I forgive you, sweetie. But dinner should be finished cooking soon so maybe after you eat.”
“Oh, I think we have time for a quick flight around the mountain.” Sylus picked her up and put her on his shoulders.
“Sylus--”
Before you could object he jumped off the side of the mountain and flew up high, your daughter roaring with joyous laughter the entire time. You looked over at Selene who watched them with burning jealousy. You sighed. “Go on. Make sure your father and sister don’t stay out too long. Dinner will be ready in ten minutes.”
“Will do mama!” Selene beamed and flew to join the others, albeit it a little slower and more awkwardly. She was getting there though.
You pulled yourself out of your chair and wandered back to the kitchen to check on the food. It was hard to believe it some days. Waking up with Sylus next to you, the girls running in to see you the moment they woke up.
It was hard to get alone time with those two tornadoes running around but there were days you sent them down to the village to stay with your father or their Auntie Tara. They were so full of life and joy. You couldn’t wait to have another even if you knew three of these little monsters was going to be exhausting.
Much like Sylus had said when you were pregnant with Selene, the girls were born looking exactly like humans but as they got older more dragon like features started to grow. Selene had horns and wings and her father’s bright red eyes, but so far no claws. Ruby though almost immediately started sprouting a tail which Selene didn’t have and was starting to grow in her horns. She wouldn’t have to worry about wings for about two more years, if she grew them at all.
You traced a hand over your stomach. You wondered what this one would be like. Maybe it’d be a boy this time.
A few minutes later Sylus and the girls came running back in, their faces windstung and bright. The girls immediately went to setting the table and Sylus walked over to you, hugging you from behind. “Smells good.” he said.
“Thanks. I decided to try this new recipe Tara gave me.” you gave the pot another stir.
“Wasn’t talking about the food.” he whispered before pulling your face towards his for a kiss.
“Ew! Daddy! Stop that!” Selene said. “You’re being gross!”
“I’m showing your mother how much I love her. What’s gross about that?” he shot back. “You two go clean up before you start eating.”
The girls ran out of the room leaving you alone. “Very subtle.” you elbowed him lightly. “I’m already pregnant, you can’t put another kid in me yet.”
“I know. But it is never a waste to practice.” his hands ran over the bump in your belly. “Just six more of these to go.”
“One more!” you elbowed him harder this time. “I have told you a hundred times I’m not popping out nine kids.”
“I can’t help it.” he spun you around, “You know how dragons like to hoard treasure.”
“Our kids are treasure now?”
He smiled softly, holding you close. “Of course. The most precious in the world, right next to you.”

You slipped the veiling over Caracalla’s head, and around his face. Geta observed from beside his brother and copied the wrap, getting his hands caught in the cotton and silk covers. He pouted and looked to you again before wrapping it correctly around his head.
The three of you stayed quiet in the dark palace as you offered a woven bag to Geta. He threw it over his shoulder. You placed your forefinger over your lips, and Caracalla on your hip. Geta took your hand, and you led the two out the palace through the maze garden. Geta walked quickly to keep up with you as you pulled him along gently.
With your head on a constant swivel, you looked out for guards, wandering servants and passersby. At the end of the maze, you hid Geta behind one of the green walls of bushes and walked slowly out with Caracalla in your arms; his face hidden in your dress. You looked out for the guards; two of them waited outside the gate past the maze. “Julius! Come here, my love!” You called out. Geta ran to you and grabbed your hand.
Due to your servants’ garments, the guards dismissed you and the boys, opening the gates. You speed walked away from the palace before uncovering Caracalla’s face. He looked rather pale and tired. “I want to walk on my own.”
“I am sorry. Part of me believes you are still hurt.”
“I am feeling better.”
“It has been weeks.” Geta added, taking his brother’s hand after you placed him onto his feet.
“I know.” You walked on the side of the road as they walked on the grass. “I have a feeling we were unnoticed.” The boys went quiet as you continued on, “We shouldn’t stay out all day but I did bring-“ You looked down at the two as they admired the open fields of wheat, roads of clay and the rising sun. Warm pastel colors stained the sky; the sun began to drench the impressionable wheat in rays of yellow and orange. “This is Rome too.” Caracalla rubbed his eyes, “Over there as well.” You direct them to the farmers houses and animals that buried their faces in food, whipping their tails around.
“They do not know what ‘Rome’ is, though.” Geta looked up at you before turning towards a man who rode his horse into the city.
“Some cannot understand us, that is true, but they are a part of something greater.”
“Is that not a cruel way to think?” Caracalla asked, his fingers stuffed into Geta’s bag as he retrieved a few grapes. “Some did not choose ‘Rome’.’’ He said rather mindlessly, his thoughts on the food in his grasp.
Geta pulled the bag from Caracalla, “Stop eating it all!” He turned to you, “If you had the choice, would you choose Rome, Lady [Y/n]?” You smiled and held his cheek.
“For you both, I would.”
“Why is it that we cannot go home with you? You are a princess in Sarmatia.” The youngest muttered.
“Yes. We could live in your Palace, and we can play games! Count and chase! We could ride your horses and meet your husband!” You looked ahead at the field of gold, slowing your steps. Geta ran to your other side and the two held onto your hands. Caracalla continued, “We would eat meals together every day and travel-“
“Whenever we wanted!” Geta finished.
“Lady [Y/n]?” Caracalla tugged on your hand.
“One day soon…” You spoke to yourself, holding their small hands tightly. “One day soon, I will take you both far from here. To Sarmatia. It gets quite cold there, so I will hold you both in my arms, right inside my coat.”
“Haha, we are getting too tall.”
“Well, I will have to get stronger so I can carry you both with me.” You nod, leading them to a clearing in an open field. You lay down a linen as the three of you sit down. Geta pulled out a few peaches, grapes, figs and sweets from his bag.
An hour or so passed. Caracalla laid down on the blanket; Geta slept on his side with his head in your lap. You gently pet his hair. “Why do you want us to call you Lady [y/n] instead of princess?”
“Because I have no rule here. I am only a Royal Lady.”
“Well, that makes sense. Sometimes I just call you Momma. Not to your face.” He laughed to himself, “But I just comes to mind when I think of you. I know you are not my real Momma. She is gone, Father says.” You looked down, your eyes spilled over with tears. “Ahem, but you make me feel like how I think everyone deserves.” The boy nodded and finally looked back at you. “I did not mean to make you cry.” He pushed his fingers across your face, wiping away your tears. “Sarmatia. Are you happy there?” He asked and pushed red hair from his eye line. He wore a smirk as if rather distracted by the look on your face. Your gaze traced his features; taking your time to etch his face in your mind as you did with Geta. For every time you would close your eyes, no matter where you were, they would be.
“I am happy when I am there.” You said and closed your eyes.
“I believe we both will be happy there as well.” He said and looked at his brother in your lap.

DELTARUNE Chapter 3 and 4 spoilers
So, let’s talk about the weird route. I loved the weird route in chapter 4. Made me want to throw up, which was exactly what I was hoping for. But… what is UP with the weird route? What’s next? Where are we going with this?
A lot of this post is coming from an assumption I’m making that the secret game (the “sword route”) from chapter 3 is depicting the past and future of the weird route. In round 1, you slay creatures until you become strong enough to break out of the world bounds and retrieve the ice key. In round 2, you enlist Noelle (the “White Cloak”) to traverse the ice palace and retrieve the shelter key, freezing Berdly along the way. These are the past and present of the weird route: taking an alternate path to break out of the limitations of the world, enslaving Noelle to use until she is no longer useful.
A big question I had going into the new chapters about Kris is why don’t they ask for help from Susie or Ralsei (especially in the weird route)? Ralsei may or may not know about the soul’s control over Kris, but Susie definitely doesn’t. She’d be horrified and want to help! I think Chapter 4 answers that question by showing us that Kris has some motivation of their own to keeping the soul around. They don’t WANT to get rid of it, and they think they have control over it. They see themselves as a cage, yes, but an effective one.
At the end of Chapter 4 though, even in the normal route, I think Kris is starting to doubt their commitment to their previous motivations, and has to be reminded of their obligation by Carol (or whoever is on the phone in chapter 4 if it’s not Carol).
“…don’t forget, Kris… you promised.”
In the weird route though… I think they’re SERIOUSLY starting to doubt their commitment to this plan. I mean… just look at their face as they grab Noelle’s arm and flee the room during the couch scene.

Their ass is terrified of us (I mean… to be fair, they should be). Kris is just a kid, and they’re forcing themselves to act as a cage for an extra dimensional entity bent towards bringing harm to them for reasons that Kris cannot fathom.
After we put the thorn ring back on Noelle’s finger, Noelle’s will to resist us is shattered. She even thanks us for it, and can’t wait to go to the festival with us. It breaks Kris too, but in a different way. You’ve probably seen the most valid crash out of 2025. Their will to resist us grows even stronger. When we try to force them to say they’ll never again play piano, they viciously bite their own hand to stop the words from leaving their mouth.


They hate us, so so much.
Just as Kris has grown more determined to resist, we, too, have gotten more creative in our ability to control Kris. On the way to the church in the weird route, Susie asks us what we were talking about with Noelle and the world freezes. And a blank text box appears.

The way I interpret this is: we don’t even give Kris an option to respond.
And throughout chapter 4, Kris is still freaking out about us. About Noelle. They have a panic attack after we force them to picture Noelle. I think that Kris is rapidly realizing this is too big for them to deal with on their own. It is spiraling out of their control. We’re making cracks in the cage and Kris knows it. I think that they’re very soon going to break their promise, come clean to Susie, and confess that they need help. That they can’t do this on their own.
And of course Susie will offer to help. She’ll respond how she always does: by offering empathy and kindness and love. She’ll understand that even though Kris has been puppeted by us, it’s not their fault. She’ll understand that even though Kris doesn’t have full control over their actions, they’re still her friend. She’ll understand that Kris loves her and Noelle, and that Kris doesn’t want to hurt them. She’ll offer to destroy the soul, or find another cage, or do anything she can to help. Of course she’ll try to help Kris. Of course she’ll try to help Noelle.
And we’ll force Kris to kill her.
Or… what I think is more likely… Susie and Ralsei are slain with a blade in the “sword route.” you know what will be available to craft after chapter 5…? The Twisted Sword. There is one character other than Kris that can technically equip swords in the game’s code. Noelle.
We’ll forge the Twisted Sword. Noelle will take up the Twisted Sword. Noelle will become strong.
And we’ll command Noelle to kill Susie.

exactly one person asked and i’ve been DYING to make this, so here are all of my favorite long batman fanfics in general and for new readers @twisted-tales-told :)
cards on the table by @wesslan ! 69k, completed. this is one of my all time favorite fanfictions, it’s so funny and tim is a mastermind genius and a little liar <3 he basically pretends to be a fortune teller and gives scarily good predictions and advice by stalking the upper class and eventually gets involved with the batfam and has to maintain his lies while dealing with his issues :) 10/10, very found family, good angst, so much lying
Dark Matter by @mysterycyclone , 221k, ongoing. this is a batman fanfic rec, of course my bbg dark matter is going to be here <3 this is a MCUxDCU crossover where after infinity war (spoilers for that if you haven’t seen it!) peter parker gets sent to the DCU dimension with part of the soul stone and basically is haunted by the ghosts of the avengers while trying to survive in gotham and get back to his dimension. this is so well written i’ve read it at least three times, it’s still ongoing but trust me it is SO GOOD. i can’t properly describe it, but if you like spider-man and you are interested in batman, you’ll love.
Red is the Color of Sinners by @bluelotuswrites , series, 120k, ongoing, M. i want you to look me in my eyes when i tell you this is my favorite series on ao3. it is set after under the red hood and daredevil 3 where jason and matt meet in a church after jason loses his ability to speak following the events of UTRH. they keep running into each other both as matt and daredevil and eventually jason begins helping matt out with injuries and tech. it’s not finished yet, but there is something so compelling about their dynamic in this series as well as jason’s overall character and how he is portrayed. i’m a sucker for mute jason after UTRH and this series does so well giving him a fresh start and a place away from gotham to heal and build relationships. i cannot recommend enough.
buy back the secrets by @vinelark , 71k, ongoing, T. THIS!!! oh my god, so this is a timkon fic where kon still doesn’t know tim’s civilian identity, but whenever he’s in trouble tim calls for superboy which leads to them meeting without kon knowing. shenanigans ensure when kon starts spending more time with tim! it’s still ongoing but the author is currently working on the next part and it is so so worth the wait. chapter 4 ends on a cliffhanger though so be warned :))
Sales People Know (listening is the most important part) by Mayhem10, 77k, completed, T. this has the coolest urban magical realism ever. tim basically runs this magic shop that shows up places and people who need something find it in his shop :) it’s kinda a slow burn found family fic with magic themes and a smidge of angst!
Retrograde Motion by Lysical, 112k, completed, T. this is best de-aged kid fic ever. jason gets turned into a 7 year old and basically the outlaws, artemis and biz, join forces with the batfam to take care of him. but trust me when i say this is worth your time, it might sound tropey but in the best way possible!! and jason’s relationship with artemis is sooo important to me in this!
Hand in Unloveable Hand (a chokehold) by britishparty, 54k, completed, M. this is one of the best psychological torture/grooming fics i’ve ever read. pretty much what if while our taking photos of batman and robin, little tim gets kidnapped and black mask gets his hands on him and decides he’s the perfect size for a protege. years of psychological abuse and insane mind games ensue. also tim is a Badass™️
If He Had Come by bronwe_iris, 45k, completed, T. so i’m a little freak and i love the angst of arkham knight jason, but more specifically the aus where bruce saves jason before he becomes the arkham knight! this is an au where bruce finds jason and saves him from the joker after 9 months of torture and brings him home. focuses on his healing mentally and physically and rebuilding his relationship with his family

AFFC is where I believe the redemption thing loses a lot of people because Jaime is upholding the regime rather than dismantling it. But I always want to ask them dismantle it how? it's so stupid
okay but that's the thing because in a way: that is what Jaime is trying to do! pushing once again my unfinished Riverlands essay bc I am very interested in this part of his story, especially the role it plays within his redemption arc, but in wider fandom it often gets misinterpreted as a detour.... which has made for some really frustrating takes lmao.
if you will humour me for a second though I want to pose to ppl what the avenues available to Jaime actually are at this point in the story. Jaime is not Sandor Clegane: he cannot just leave everything behind and assume it'll all be fine without him.
the situation in fact: ur evil dad has just died, leaving House Lannister essentially irreconcilable with its enemies. the realm has been devastated by the war. who is in charge of it all? ur eight-year-old son, a sweet kid who could be a good king in the right hands.... but is ofc currently in the hands of Cersei, who is.... well. Stannis, the Riverlords, the vestiges of the Starks, and a bunch of forces you're not even aware of want and your family dead to a man. and you are the lord commander of the kingsguard, who would like to 1) fulfill ur oath to Catelyn, 2) protect your family, 3) not make anything worse than it already is and 4) ideally make things better! what do u fucking do?
OPTION 1: literally just leave this sucks so why not just leave! you are an eminently recognisable man and so is your son but what if you just walked out of there and let whatever forces move in in your wake. Stannis probably gets there first (you don't actually know about Dany or Aegon) and he wants you dead, but maybe if you shave ur head (wait that didn't work last time did it) and dye your son's then....??? ok sure. so now you're living in the woods, the realm may or may not fall back into chaos, ur days are pretty numbered, and this isn't even a good story, is it. cool !
OPTION 2: refuse to have anything to do with a continued war against Starks and Tullys and try and advocate for them at court oh god u really thought that would work. your dad murdered Robb and Cat Stark at a fucking wedding. they do not want to be ur friends, they want u dead. they will arm again in a heartbeat, and that's your family done for. also good luck talking Cersei round on this. or anyone really. edit bc oh and also! if you do just want to sit this one out and refuse to get involved with the siege at Riverrun - some other goon will jump in and end it violently for you. so you've basically done nothing but allow it to happen. good for you!
OPTION 3: mitigate and restore what u can your son is a nice boy who likes books and always does his best. you think that if you could surround him with the right people, he might rule well. you realise Cersei is a liability, and plan to have her removed from your son's counsel. you plan to rebuild it with better people. you realise that the realm is starved and in ruins: you want to prevent war, and you really don't want to break your oath. however, many of the riverlords and northerners are not ready to kneel. you treat with those you can, and wring a peace out of the Tullys by saying the right words in the right voice. your reputation takes a hit and readers cannot understand the chapter for shit, but Edmure Tully accepts terms of peace. you cannot restore the Starks, but you can try and save the last of them: you send your gf on a secret mission, and when she comes to tell you that you have a change to help (lol), you go with her.
THE CATCH: none of these fucking work because your dad fucked everything up so bad that everyone wants your family dead and noone wants to be your friend. even though you ended the siege at Riverrun on peaceful terms, that's only going to last about five minutes. you may be trying to save Sansa Stark right now, but god knows what's about to happen to your own kids while you're not there. you're fucked really. there's no single right thing you can do right now except follow what you believe is the best, most realistic thing to do in the moment and see where it leads. shit. that's how you ended up spending 14 years in the woods with brienne waiting to meet zombie Catelyn while Game of Thrones botches your ending and podcasters call your story the limits of redemption. fuck !

I have a sort of idea on how to I'm gonna go with magic and runes, so bear with me. “Are you coming in or not?” He didn’t move as he spoke, and with a deep breath, you walked into the elevator.
You didn’t care for Rictus, not that he ever did you much harm personally, but you had heard the stories. Caitlyn would tell about how he ‘interrogated’ Zaunites, and you'd begged her to say something. Stop him, stop Ambessa. At one point you'd ask her if releasing the gray wasn't enough, and that got you the silent treatment for a while. He was loyal to the general and her ways, and unless the universe had given him the ‘broom-closet’ treatment, he was probably the same asshole.
The doors closed with a cheerful ping, and you stared straight ahead at your blurred reflection in the golden metal. You started to pray to whoever was listening for this to be a quiet and quick ride, but when you saw his reflection move, turning slightly towards you, you knew the elevator was the gods’ blind spot.
“What was the color?” He asked, his tone smug about something you weren’t yet privy to. “Excuse me?” You didn’t fully look at him, just tilted your head slightly towards him. “The rune…what was the color?" You could feel his grin as the words came out.
Son of a bitch.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You turned back to stare in front of you with a deep sigh of annoyance coming out of you. “I know those distant looks into the void.” He straightened up too, grasping his hands in front of him. He wasn't trying to be menacing, but his weight alone was enough for him to be threatening no matter what he was doing. “In the beginning, it’s all very telling. The long stares into nothingness, the twitches when something gasps behind you. It’s all the same…”
There was no joking tone or sympathy in his voice, just knowledge. You supported the most blank expression you could muster as there was no sympathy in your eyes when you looked at his profile.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.” You punctuated every word, and he chuckled, his metal armor moving to the mocking sound.
“Was it Green? Golden? Blue? Purple?” He looked back at you, and the shattering sound started to reappear.
Apparently whatever micro-expression you gave him was enough for him to figure out as a grin spread across his face.
“Purple? Chaos then? Interesting…”
You looked at his expression with a scowl. It was more than obvious whatever you'd tell him was going to go straight out of your mouth into Ambessa’s ear. And yet he seemed to be the most knowledgeable person about actual magic. So the scowl was mixed with an eye roll of annoyance.
“What about it?” You looked back to your reflection.
“Those don’t show up often.” You kept your mouth shut, waiting for him to continue. "The Arcane doesn't trust us with those runes." "Us?" "Imperfect beings." His tone showing a displeasure at that description. "We cannot be trusted with chaos, because we like to jump into the dark waters without thinking of the consequences."
A moment of silence passed between you two. Somewhere in the back of your mind, another voice talked to you about imperfections and how it should be a priority of all beings to become their most perfect self. Now that you thought about it, the whole spiel made sense. He was a version of the Arcane.
“What would happen if I were to use it?” You side-eyed him; he tilted his head towards you much like you did before. "I suggest using it on someone you don't like." He looked at you smugly.
You looked at him straight in the eye, face blank, eyes on fire, a predatory grin unconsciously showing on your face. You saw the wall behind him start to shatter just like a window in the lab.
The arrogance on his features quickly disappeared. His shoulders tensed and his fists clenched. He wasn’t the only one who could read body signals. He was readying himself for something. The door pinged, and he took a step forward.
“You’d be dead before you finished speaking the rune.” he said as he passed by you.
That was enough for you to know the purple chaos rune was something even Rictus didn’t want to deal with.

After four or five weeks of popping into this dimension, the mystery was over: you finally found out what your mother’s commission to the lab was. It was a small machine that would be able to read out loud any document it scanned.
You brought a new couch to the lab at the beginning of the week. It was made from the same material as the armchairs on the penthouse's veranda. The shine in Viktor’s eyes could have lit up a dark room, as Jayce groaned.
“Thank you…now he’s never going home.” He had said. “He is. Mom is sending another one to his apartment.” You’d retorted.
After that, Viktor promised to make 'The Reader' his priority.
And that brought you to the lab, waiting for Viktor to finish something on the invention as you sat on the upholstery.
You understood at the moment the appeal of that cushioning, melting into it as Viktor turned his stool to you, placing the goggles on his forehead, his disheveled hair making him look like a mad scientist.
“I think we can try to make it work…Hopefully it will work,” he said, tilting his head to the side, looking at it with doubt, his hand going to the hairs on the back of his head.
“Explain to me again what it does.” You pointed your eyes gazing at the weird contraption.
You’d seen some beautiful things come from this lab in your timeline. This, though? ...was not it. Even though both men kept promising to make it look nice, the skeleton of the machine was nightmarish.
It had four long legs that came out of a funnel-like tube. The end of the tube had a glass lens with four little prongs to secure the hex gem on it, and two small speaker cones finished up the structure. It looked like a spider playing two tiny trumpets.
“Well…” he cleared his throat and pointed to the metal structure. “We call it 'The Reader' because, well, that is what it does." "Did you name it?" You joked, and he looked at you, rolling his eyes pointedly. "Maybe..." He gave you a grin and went back to the explanation. "You put a paper with something written on this side.”
He grabbed a small piece of paper, wrote something on it, and placed it on the lower part of the thing.
“And then you turn the switch.” He flipped a little metallic switch, and the hex gem shined, a ring of arcane symbols floating around it.
A blue cone of light came from the lens and reflected on the page; a small, brighter rune shined, and a line of brighter light from the cone traced the letters. After a few seconds, a noise that sounded like a record scratch started to come out of the speakers.
“Hello, I am Viktor.” The machine whirred, and a very mechanical Viktor voice came out of the machine.
It was far more similar to the Herald’s voice than you’d expect, and for a moment you felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You blinked slowly, trying to stop the spiral about to start.
“I can change the voice…” Viktor interrupted your silence. You looked up at his cringing expression. “I don’t think my accent helps with the clarity of the reading.”
“It’s a perfectly good accent if you ask me.” You blurted out, your mind still a little light. "And if you're going to try and somehow use it in the Undercity, perhaps a familiar accent would help."
"Has your mother told you the purpose of the machine?" He asked, turning to you in his stool, knees bumping into yours.
"It's my mother's project. A project that you are overseeing. The target audience is very easy to guess." You shrugged and leaned back into the couch.
“I don't know if I like being that obvious with my intentions.” Viktor's had a joking tone, and you snorted.
Without another word, he turned the page over on the small table under the lens and flipped the switch again. The cone of blue light came over the text, and the small bright line started to trace the letters again.
A very stoic and misplaced Viktor voice came from the invention, this time sounding more comical than threatening since it was clear that the hex gem was trying to add sounds together unnaturally.
“This is the letter A.” It said, and you started to have difficulty controlling the laughter, the chuckles and snorts becoming hard to swallow. “It can be read as apple or nation. It can—
The runes started to move faster around the hex gem, and the sound coming from the speakers became distorted, much like a record player replaying a damaged part of a vinyl record.
“It can—hello—Letter A—read as I’m—Apple—Viktor—Nation.” It repeated a string of nonsensical words as it started to die down. You both looked at each other. Viktor with a concerned look, you with a humorous one. “I’m Vikt-or nation…Hello, Viktor, or nation”
The sound warbled out into silence. You sucked your lips, trying to stop the fit of laughter, but it was inevitable. You saw Viktor's chest shake, and a small string of laughter came out.
“It may need a few adjustments!” Viktor scratched the back of his neck. “Just a few?” “Yes. Well, last time I worked on it, no sound would come out. This is progress. Sort of…” He touched the machine with a screwdriver, and the thing went back to its incoherent speech, grabbing words from the paper and jumbling them together in an incoherent form.
You got back to laughing until Viktor detached the hex gem from its place, the machine dying without another sound.
“I don’t think you’re getting there with a few adjustments.” You looked at both the invention and the inventor with your head.
Viktor gave you an annoyed look, grabbed the metal spider machine, placed it carefully on his workstation, and started to tinker with the machine once again.

Chapter 5
Part IV – On Our Last Night
The house is quiet when you get back. Your remaining family members had gone to church and dinner so it was also dark. The silence is completely rooted between you and Jake.
It isn’t just quiet like a lazy Sunday nor the kind of quiet that comes with comfort. It was a silence shaped like the things neither of you had said.
You didn’t speak in the car after the fight. Jake had driven with one hand on the wheel, jaw clenched, eyes on the road. While you’d stared out the window, every so often thinking about what it might’ve felt like to reach for him. But you hadn’t and neither did he.
Now, the afternoon sun dipped low through your childhood bedroom window. You’re folding clothes into your duffel bag with sharp, precise movements. Jake is across the room, throwing his t-shirts and jeans into his own bag without the usual care he gave to packing. Every zipper, every rustle of fabric sounded too loud.
Neither of you are looking at each other. Silence overshadowing the last night of being together.
You both fly home tomorrow. Back to your cities. Back to your lives. Back to the silence between you.
Your hands pause over his soft navy sweatshirt, the one you’d worn it the night you arrived at the lake house. It still smelled like him. You’re unsure if you were allowed to take it.
Behind you, Jake sighs. You turn.
He’s sitting on the edge of the bed now, head bowed, elbows on his knees, hands laced. He looks tired and not the kind of tired a nap could fix. It’s the kind that lived in your bones.
You sit down beside him without thinking. Neither of you speaking still. Not until your knees brush.
You don’t mean to do it. It just happens. But when you don’t pull away, Jake finally turns his head. His eyes find yours, soft and aching. He reaches up, fingers brushing a piece of hair from your cheek.
“You okay?” he asks quietly.
You swallow. “No.”
He nods, like he already knew. You shift slightly, your shoulder touching his arm. Then he moves slowly, hesitantly, like he doesn’t want to scare you off.
His hand slides to your thigh, his thumb stroking gently. Not demanding. Just... present. That was all it took. You turn and kiss him. No urgency or desperation, unlike before. Just soft. Lingering. Searching. The way your hand finds the side of his neck. The way your lips move against his like a silent apology.
Jake doesn’t deepen the kiss, simply cherishes the moment with you. He kisses you back with the kind of tenderness that broke something open in your chest. Then he pulls you into his lap, lifting you effortlessly. Your legs straddling him as he settled you over his thighs. He kisses your cheek. Your jaw. Your temple. His hands run slowly over your back, holding you like he was grounding himself in your shape.
“Is this okay?” he asks, voice low and warm.
You nod, the word stuck behind the swell in your throat.
He holds you for a long moment, just breathing you in. Then he shifts slightly, fingers brushing under your shirt.
Clothes fall away with reverence and by the time you’re bare in his arms, your skin is already flushed from emotion.
Jake lays you down, softly, trying to memorize every detail of you. There was no teasing. No sharp grin. No filthy promises. Only silence, and the rasp of his breath as he kisses across your chest. Down your ribs. Over your hips. When he moves back up, his eyes find yours again. His hands cup your face, thumbs brushing the corners of your mouth.
“I don’t need anything but this,” he whispers. “You. Right now.”
You nod again, still unable to speak.
He pushes inside you with aching slowness, watching every flicker of emotion cross your face. The stretch is deep, deliberate. And when he finally fills you completely, it feels like something inside you cracks wide open.
You gasp, your fingers grip his shoulders, nails dig in like you need something to hold onto or else float away.
He moves slowly with long, deep strokes. His hips rocking into yours like a wave rolling into shore. There’s no rush nor pressure. Just connection.
Your chest arch into his, seeking closeness while your mouth finds his again. He kisses you through every motion, whispering your name into your skin.
You wrap your legs around him, lock him in place.
Jake buries his face in your neck.
“You’re mine,” he murmurs, voice raw and shaking. “Even if you don’t know what you want yet. Even if you need time.”
Your breath hitches.
“I’m yours, Y/N. Even if you’re not ready.”
Finally, he says softly, “I love you. Even if you can’t find the courage to say it back yet.”
The tears come before you could stop them. Soft at first. Then harder. You tremble beneath him, your hands tangle in his hair as sobs slip from your throat.
But Jake didn’t stop. He doesn’t pull away. He kisses your tears. He held your face. He rocks into you like he could take the sadness away.
You cry through it. Not from the pain, but from release. From the weight of everything you hadn’t been able to say. Your climax comes quietly, unlike a storm but rather a soft, cracking open. A surrender of some sorts.
Jake follows soon after, hips faltering, voice catching as he comes inside you, groaning your name like a promise. He doesn’t pull away, only continues to hold you. Cradle you.
Like it was the only thing left he could give.
The next morning is full of goodbyes among your family. Your mother tears up, reminding you to come home more often. Your father is silent with the emotions welling up inside him. Your brother who promises he would let you know as soon as he can visit New York. It makes you realize more how much you really miss them. It only saddens you that the realization always hits when it's time to say goodbye.
The airport is crowded, loud, and indifferent. A far cry from the intimacy of the goodbyes from your childhood home doorstep. Your carry-on digs into your shoulder as you and Jake stand just outside security, away from the flow of travelers.
Your flight is first.
Jake holds your duffel, quiet. He hadn’t let go of it since the Uber dropped you both off. His jaw is tense, eyes fixed on the blinking departures board above your head.
Neither of you say anything for a long moment. But you could feel the words building, pressing up from the back of your throat like steam.
"This is the part where we say something profound, isn’t it?" you say softly, trying to smile.
Jake gives you a weak laugh, his eyes flicking down to meet yours. "I don’t have anything profound. I just don’t want to watch you walk away."
You really look at him then. You finally notice the tired eyes, rumpled shirt, that heartbreak trying not to show. It guts you.
“I meant what I said last night,” he adds, stepping closer. “I’m yours, even if you’re not ready. I’ll wait. I’ll figure this out. If you just give me a chance.”
Your throat tightens, a thousand things catching there.
You reach for his hand, threading your fingers through his. “I don’t know how to do this.”
“Then let’s not do it alone,” he says simply. “We don’t have to have all the answers. We just have to keep trying.”
Tears well up again. But not breaking this time. Just swelling. Just full.
You lean up and kiss him one last time. It’s slow and aching and desperate. And when you pull away, you pressed your forehead to his.
“Thank you for not giving up on me.”
He smiles, a sad, beautiful thing. “Never.”
They call your group.
You stepped back.
Jake hands you your bag.
Your fingers brush. And then you turn.
You don’t look back until you reach security. And when you do, he’s still there.
Standing. Waiting.
You give him a smile.
He nods.
And then you disappear into the crowd.
Not a goodbye. Just a pause.
And the hope that maybe, just maybe, you aren’t walking away forever.

Author's Note: Well here we are. I had so much fun writing this chapter and I am incredibly proud of it. These two have captured my heart and I cannot wait to see this little story through to the end. Harry and his camgirl have been the highlight of my summer so far. Thank you for being along for the ride, and please enjoy one of the most explicit things I've written to date.
New note, 6/25: Also, I went back and made one small edit to part 2. In it, Harry said it was June. For the outline I have planned I needed to move things up two months to August, so now I just made Harry make a vague reference to it being summer. You’ll understand when part 4 comes out!

You’re looking contently at the view from Harry’s kitchen window, sunlight streaming all over you. He loves your profile in that one, and the way the light accentuates your features.
The next is a photo of your naked silhouette in the frosted glass of his shower.
The third photo is of you at the zoo, happily captivated by the animals and paying no mind to the fact that Harry just had to capture how beautiful and carefree you looked in that moment.
He’s never taken candid photos of a lover before, nor has he obsessed over receiving a text from one. He certainly never paid this much mind to when Lucy would or would not contact him, and he’d been prepared to marry the woman for Christ’s sake.
Harry also never once called Lucy ‘sweetheart.’ Or any pet names, now that he thinks about it. Never a ‘baby,’ or a ‘honey.’ Not once. He would always greet her with a simple, somewhat awkward ‘hey you’, and he mostly just called her by her name.

Harry’s got half a mind to cancel his meeting and take you out for brunch, but before he can even think of a response to text you back with, his younger brother is barging into his office without knocking. He’s the only person besides their mother who can get away with that .
“What, Peter? I’m busy,” Harry says, not looking up from his phone.
“You don’t seem very busy to me. Is that her you’re texting?” His brother’s voice is saying.
Harry looks up sharply, glaring. Words aren’t necessary.
Peter grins, plopping himself into the chair across from Harry’s desk. He takes a long sip of his own black coffee, eyeing Harry the entire time. “I originally came in here to complain that I missed the surprise Bad Bunny show, which I’m very upset about. Charlotte being pregnant is ruining all my fun, but don’t you dare tell her I said that. Anyway, then I heard a rumor that you found yourself a new woman at the show, and that the two of you got to know each other very well on the dance floor. I just had to come hear all about it.”
Harry’s eyes narrow even more at his annoyance of a sibling. He loves him, but he could also strangle him at any given moment. “Get out of my office, Peter. I need to prep for the meeting at eleven.”
“Yeah cause you were doing that so dutifully before I walked in,” Peter laughs, taking another generous sip. “So is that her you’re texting, then? What’s she look like?”
Harry groans, “Yes, it’s her.” Then his eyes flick back down to the open text thread, and when they land on the adorable photo of you with your pathetic yogurt, the joyful little smile which creeps onto his lips simply can’t be helped.
Peter’s jaw drops, “ Oh . Oh fuck , Harry. This is a wild development. I wasn’t expecting this today.”
Harry’s gaze moves back to his brother, eyebrow raising at the look on his face. “What on Earth are you talking about?”
Peter’s sharp laugh is one of disbelief. “She’s the one, man! I’m calling it. You’ve never looked like this before. Not once in my entire life have I seen that fucking look on your face. It’s the only explanation!”
“Bullshit, Peter,” Harry scoffs, looking away but not back down at your image. He has to consciously make himself not, knowing Peter would notice and use the impulse against him. “You know my opinion on that.”
“Whatever, big brother. Suit yourself. As the one of us who has fallen in love, I think I know what I’m talking about. But I’ll let you figure that shit out for yourself. Wait until Charlotte finds out, she’s going to go nuts.” As he says this, Peter is already getting up to leave. “See you in the conference room. Please actually prep for this though. I need you out there. Text her back and then think about her later. Trust me, it gets easier the more you get used to it. Love is fucking weird, man.”
“I am not in love with her,” Harry argues, shaking his head. If anything, what he’s feeling is infatuation more than anything else, right?
“Keep telling yourself that, bro. And for the love of Christ, get your shit together for this meeting.” And with that, Peter is gone as quickly as he came.
Harry looks around his large office, at his view of the city below, and wonders if there’s any validity to what his brother just said. Another vibration goes off in his hand, and the excitement he feels is like a jolt of caffeine straight to his heart.
Only, it’s just his calendar reminder letting him know that his next meeting is in fifteen minutes. The deep disappointment he feels leads him to conclude that Peter doesn’t need to get Harry’s hopes up like that, but there’s a nonzero chance that his baby brother actually knows what he’s talking about for once.

“What do you want, Hargrove?” Steve asks, situating himself so that more of his body is in between you and Billy. Mike and Lucas split up and go outside while you, Dustin, and Max start running through the halls, shouting Will’s name.
“Will!” You’re more pleading rather than shouting. It’s happening again. It’s fucking happening again. Your mind is running a million miles a second, you feel the cold hand of fear twist around your throat. The last time you felt fear like this was when you showed up at Jonathan’s house and collapsed in his arms right after finding out Will had gone missing.
And now he’s gone again, but Jonathan isn’t here this time to keep you steady.
Dustin cups both hands over his mouth. “Will!”
You all turn a corner but Will isn’t there. Nothing.
“Dustin!” Joyce rounds the corner, alarmed. “What’s going on? Where’s Will?”
The woman is moreso asking you than the kids, but you can only shake your head at her helplessly. “I don’t know, Mrs. Byers.”
Joyce holds your gaze and you feel so ashamed of yourself. You’ve let her down again. She’s always been so trusting of you with her children, and here you are, once again a fucking wreck trying to find the son you’ve lost.
Down the hall, a door flings open. “The field!”
The four of you turn and find Lucas standing there, panting and out of breath. He motions for you all to follow and in a heartbeat you begin to run outside after him.
There, you find Mike in the field with Will standing next to him, and for a second you feel relief wash over you. He’s okay, he’s safe and isn’t in another dimension. But as you get closer, you notice the stiffness in Will and the way Mike is shaking his shoulder.
Something isn’t right.
“I just found him like this!” Mike is shouting. “I think he’s having another episode!”
This would make two in two days.
When you reach Will, you finally grasp how dire the situation is. He looks horrible, his eyes have rolled into the back of his head and are spasming. His body shakes, his fingers twitch by his side and the veins in his neck strain.
Joyce quickly grabs him and starts shaking his shoulders, pleading with him. “Will, sweetie, wake up! It’s mom!”
You cover a hand over your mouth as you watch, horrified. Dustin and Lucas stand next to you, each clutching your shirt in fear. Max stands across from you, watching the situation unfold with her own uncertainty. She doesn't understand what any of this means. Why this is happening to Will, and why you’re close to tears as Joyce pleads with her son to come back to her.
The fear on her face is why you agree to Mike to not let Max into the party. They’re all so fucking young. Too young for any of this.
“Will, can you hear me?” Joyce pats Will’s face and you pull the boys even closer to you. Mike refuses to leave Will’s side.
“He’ll be okay,” you whisper to the kids, but you’re selfishly trying to comfort yourself.
Tears form in Mike’s eyes and you just want it all to stop. Will isn’t waking up and Dustin is shaking against you and Joyce’s pleas have become more like begs and it’s all too much.
Then, Will’s eyes snap open and he takes a sharp breath that hurts your own chest to hear.
You release the breath you’d been holding. The worst of it is over.
Will looks around shyly, as if he already knows it’s happened again. Joyce exhales and kisses his cheek and wraps him in her arms. Mike and the others look around, uncertain but relieved, while Max stands off to the side.
You wish you could explain it all to her, but it wouldn’t be right.
Slowly, once Will has recovered, you and the kids walk with Joyce back to their car. Dustin’s hand hasn’t left yours and you secretly wouldn’t let him go anyways if he tried.
“Have the episodes always been like this?” You ask your brother, now remembering that he had to witness that alone on Halloween night.
“Yeah,” Dustin responds, his voice small.
You squeeze his hand and follow after Joyce. In your head, you’re creating a list of all the baked goods you can make with the ingredients you know you have in your kitchen. They all deserve some oatmeal raisin cookies after this.
When you get to the car, you break away from the kids and step in front of Will. He’s pale, paler than he’s been in a while, and it’s only now that you see the bags underneath his eyes. He’s gotten worse, how could you have missed that?
You should’ve seen the signs sooner.
“Did I scare you?” Will asks, and you immediately grab his hand.
“No, never. You just… gave me a reminder that I love you. Go get some rest, little bee.” You kiss his cheek goodbye and he quietly gets in the car.
Joyce is behind you, and once Will is safely in the car you turn to face the woman. “Call me if anything else happens, please?”
She nods at you, already understanding why you need the reassurance. There’s a warmth in her eyes, even if every other part of her seems exhausted. “I will.”
“I know I’m not a scientist, or–or a licensed therapist but I just–”
“Sweetie, I understand. Apart from Hopper, you’ve done more research and reading than anyone else. If Will gets worse, I’ll call.”
You smile at the woman appreciatively. “Thank you.”
She squeezes your shoulders and then gets in the car, driving off. You stand there for a moment, needing a second to compose yourself, before turning around to join the kids standing on the school’s steps.
They seem to have all forgotten about Dart, but you sure as hell haven’t. Dustin fiddles with his walkie and won’t meet your eye, which only reminds you of how weird he had been acting in the bathroom earlier when he conveniently couldn't find Dart.
The two of you are definitely having a code blue tonight.
“Dustin, you’re my ride to work.”
“What?”
“Jonathan can’t take me, so I have to ride on your pegs.”
“Who’s Jonathan?” Max asks.
You give the girl a thumbs up. “Love the enthusiasm to understand everything, unfortunately I need to get to work and lecture my little brother.”
“Good luck, Dustin.” Mike snickers.
Your brother waves him off. “Yeah, yeah.”
You say goodbye to the kids, giving a stern warning that if they find any signs of Dart to tell you immediately. “I’m looking at you, Wheeler.”
Mike groans and you leave him to wallow as you hop on Dustin’s bike pegs
“She always this bossy?” Max mumbles to Lucas.
He shrugs. “Yeah, but she’s also always right, so.”
You blow a kiss towards the boy, and he blushes. Once Dustin is ready, the two of you head towards town.
The bike ride is quick, one of the small perks of living in a small town. The entire ride, you and Dustin are quiet. You both know that you have many choice words to say, but Dustin still looks shaken up from Will’s episode and you’re not doing too well, either.
When Bookstrordinary’s sign greets you, you tap Dustin’s shoulder to alert him to stop. You can walk the rest of the way, you don’t want him out too late in the dark.
“You’re lucky I can’t call off tonight, otherwise I’d kill you right now.”
“You’re such a great big sister, Y/N.”
“Thanks, I try.”
You hop off the bike and sigh. “When I get home tonight, you and I are talking.”
Dustin looks down, but takes a deep breath and salutes you halfheartedly. You laugh a bit, salute back, and then tell him to bike home safely.

After a very long and anxious shift, you ask your coworker for a ride home.
Alex almost drops his keys and looks around, as if you could be talking to anyone else in the empty store. “M–me?”
“Yes, Alex. I need a ride home.”
“Where’s Jonathan? I won’t like, die if I drive you, right?”
You roll your eyes. “No, he’d only kill you if you didn’t drive me home since it’s late.”
Alex exhales, relieved. “Okay, yeah. I can take you home, then.”
By the time you get home, it’s later than you anticipated. Alex was kind enough to drive you, but had you known he was a new driver who went ten below the speed limit, you would’ve just walked.
You walk inside and all the lights are off. Your mom is on the couch with Mews, softly snoring while some program plays on the TV. She tends to do that now, fall asleep on the couch rather than her bed. Too many memories, she explained once to you.
Quietly you take your shoes off and grab some leftovers in the fridge. Dustin’s door is closed and his own light is off, which you sigh at.
“Shit.”
He could be tricking you into thinking he’s asleep, but you could just be overthinking it. Dustin has been having more nightmares recently, you’d feel horrible if you knocked on his door and woke him up from his much needed sleep. He’s been through enough today.
You eat your dinner, alone at the table, and you wonder how exactly you’ve wound up here again. Monster on the loose, Will in danger, Jonathan off with Nancy.
Seems like you can never have a normal November ever again.
After you’re done eating, you tiredly head to your room and collapse on your bed. Except, instead of landing on your soft pillows, you land on a hard body instead.
“Oomph–” A voice groans underneath you.
You fling yourself off, finding Jonathan laying there. “Jonathan Byers, what the fuck are you doing in my bed?”
He rubs his eyes. “Said we’d call tonight.”
You stare at him. “That doesn’t at all answer my question.”
“We said we’d call tonight, but then Nancy and I realized our calls could be traced here, too. To your house, but I promised to keep you updated, so… Here I am.”
“And napping in my bed was just something you had to do?”
Jonathan yawns. “Yup.”
You flick his forehead. “Scoot over.”
He makes room for you on the bed so that you lay side by side. Technically he’s not supposed to sleep in your bed, but your mom never said anything about naps or cuddling. You nuzzle against Jonathan’s chest, allowing the fear and anger from today leak out of your bones as you rest them. He’s always had that effect on you.
Here, in Jonathan’s arms, you feel the safest.
“What did I miss today?” You ask once you’re settled in.
Jonathan thinks for a moment. “Well, Nance and I got the tape recorder and then drove to her house. She called Barb’s parents, told them she had to confess something about Barb and to meet her tomorrow at Forrest Hills Park in the morning.”
“She’s a genius.”
“She is,” Jonathan lazily responds. He’s drawing small circles against your hand, which is splayed against his chest. His sweater, one you bought him for his birthday, is soft against you. Jonathan seems happy right now, or at least content, and you almost don’t want to ruin the moment.
It’s so rare to have him like this these days. The old Jonathan, shy and quiet and bashful.
But he has to know about Will and Dart. It’s only right that he knows.
“Something happened today, at the middle school.”
There must be something in your voice, because the second the words leave your mouth, Jonathan sits up to look at you. “What happened?”
“My brother found a baby monster from the Upside Down, named him Dart, hid it from me, and now he’s lost.” Jonathan stares at you and you can only sigh. “Will also had another episode. His second one in two days.”
“Fuck…”
“Yeah. Got to the middle school and suddenly I was chasing around some lizard looking thing from the Upside Down. Pretty typical day, honestly.”
“I wish I could’ve been there, I’m sorry. I can help you look for Dart tomorrow–”
“It’s okay,” you reassure Jonathan. “If anything, this all just proves that you and Nancy are onto something. I mean, it’s been a year and we’re still dealing with so many fucking problems due to their carelessness. How the fuck does a creature from the Upside Down just happen to survive and find its way to my brother? I mean, what if someone else had found it?”
You shake your head. “Something’s going on. You and Nancy need to keep going. Expose those evil fuckers.”
Jonathan frowns. “But what about you? What if the baby monster has a bigger, angrier mom and you get hurt?”
You hadn’t thought about that, honestly. “Huh, that’s a great question.”
“Bug–”
“I’ll be fine, bee. Those assholes at Hawkins Lab need to pay.”
Jonathan throws his head back, closes his eyes, and sighs. He knows he can’t argue with you about this, you already willingly took over the role of babysitter, but he still doesn’t like it. Sometimes your selflessness makes him want to scream.
“I hate that you’re always right.”
“I personally love it.” You respond, and Jonathan laughs. He uses his whole chest, it’s breathy and deep and full of warmth, and you smile and kiss his cheek as he laughs.
No other conversation follows, you and Jonathan are content with just laying there in silence. It’s been a while since you guys were this close. Limbs tangled with limbs, the warmth from the body heat almost too much to stand, yet just enough to love.
He stays for a while, but eventually he kisses your forehead and tells you he has to go. “Early morning, but I promise I’ll be back the next day.”
“I’m holding you to that.”
Jonathan laughs again and untangles himself from you. He presses another kiss to your forehead, playfully tucks your blanket underneath your chin like a child, and then wishes you a goodnight as he leaves through your window.

For some goddamn reason, you miss your four fucking alarms this morning and oversleep. By almost an entire hour. You’ve never, ever slept through your alarms this horribly before, and you’re blaming the Hawkins Lab people for it.
Now, you know the real reason is because you’ve spent every night for the last three weeks obsessively researching post-traumatic stress disorder, but blaming Hawkins Lab makes you feel better.
You get ready as fast as you can, and of course this happens the one morning Jonathan can’t drive you to school and you have to bike. Your mom and Dustin have already left, which. Fuck. You still have to talk to Dustin about Dart.
Not off to a great start this morning.
It takes a burnt piece of toast for breakfast, cramped calves, and a lot of prayers, but you manage to make it to school only minutes before the first bell rings. When you arrive, you have just enough time to notice that both Steve’s car and Billy’s car are parked in the lot.
Great. You have to deal with them both alone today.
As you’re walking inside, you hear a few people whispering about Jonathan and Nancy. Seems like word has spread that they skipped fourth period together yesterday and still haven’t returned yet.
Awesome. Steve will definitely be in a great mood today once he hears about that.
He can’t seem to catch a damn break.
And neither can you, because you quickly realize how weird it is being at school without Jonathan and Nancy. It’s lonely, and Steve still seems to be hiding from you.
No, not hiding, you remind yourself. He’s still hurt, he asked for space and the least you can do is give it to him. You told him where to find you.
And find you Steve does.
You’re in the lunchroom, staring sadly at your pathetic lunch consisting of a handful of granola bars, resolving yourself to a lonely lunch without your friends, when Steve’s body slides into the seat next to you. You look up, surprised, and he raises his eyebrows at you.
“We need to talk.”
“Okay… About what? I forgot what topic we’re on. Are we still on the whole friends conversation?”
Steve isn’t in the mood for this. “Where did Jonathan and Nancy go?”
Fuck.
You look around the lunchroom, scared that the wrong people could be listening in. “I… Okay, I know we just had a whole conversation about being honest and I begged to be your friend again but… I can’t tell you.”
Steve takes several seconds to respond. You know he’s doing everything he can to not completely snap at you. “You… can’t tell me where my girlfriend ran off to?”
“No…”
“You recognize how fucking stupid that sounds, right?”
You swallow. “I do.”
Steve pinches the bridge of his nose. He’s so beyond pissed off right now. Yesterday you were in his car, reassuring him that he’s a good guy and charming and pretending to be his friend again. Now, you won’t tell him where the fuck his girlfriend has gone.
Steve isn’t an idiot. He knows there’s more to why you ditched him this summer, something you refuse to tell him, and he respected that. He did. He hadn’t wanted to push you too far, but it’s pretty damn ironic that you’re trying to get back into his life while still fucking lying to him.
You see the obvious frustration on Steve’s face, and you wince. You take another look around, deciding to risk it. This isn’t fair to him, he deserves to know because from an outside perspective, you’d also be incredibly pissed off if your girlfriend just up and left with the guy she has weird feelings for.
“Listen,” you lean in close, whispering, “Jonathan and Nancy went off to get evidence about who really killed Barb.”
Steve whips his head back. “What–”
“Shh!” You reach behind his head and shove him back down so that you can whisper again. “That’s all I can tell you. There’s… There’s people who could be listening, bad people who could hurt us and–”
“Well, what do we have here?” A voice interrupts.
The hair on the back of your neck stands up.
It’s Billy.
You and Steve break apart, but he places a hand on the back of your seat in a protective manner. You lean in closer to him, trying to make yourself smaller as if Billy doesn’t already have his eyes on you anyways.
“What do you want, Hargrove?” Steve asks, situating himself so that more of his body is in between you and Billy.
He sucks his teeth and then lets out a cold chuckle. “Nothin’, just didn’t know that this little sweetheart had it in her.”
“Don’t call her that–”
“I mean, her boyfriend runs off with your girlfriend?” Billy chuckles again. “I’m surprised Y/N Henderson ran into your arms, Harrington.”
Billy learned your name.
You don’t want to know how.
“I mean,” Billy shrugs. “It’s a genius plan. Scorned lovers pissing off their exes. But from what I’ve heard, the school’s sweetheart wouldn’t even hurt a fly.”
“Jonathan and I aren’t together.” You finally find your voice.
This only seems to entice Billy. He takes a step forward and leans against your table. “So, you’re single then?”
Steve’s hand tightens around your seat and you feel his body tense. Billy seems to notice this, too, and shakes his head.
“I know I promised I’d leave you some, Harrington. But this one?” He leans in closer to you, his breath minty and cold as it ghosts against your face. “She’s cute. I think I’ll keep this one.”
A chair goes flying across the room as Steve stands up. He has his fist raised and you’ve never seen his eyes so cold before. He hates what Billy is implying about you, as if he has some claim over you, as if you aren’t a human fucking being.
You’re so much more than that.
“Don’t talk about her that way.” Steve growls out, his face inches away from Billy’s.
Billy seems to come to life, having finally cracked Steve Harrington, and within a second he has his own fists raised. You’re aware of everyone’s eyes on you in the lunchroom and vaguely you remember Steve confessing to you how much of a hardass his father is on him about school. He can’t get into any more trouble, especially not because of you.
You shove yourself between Steve and Billy, despite how much your body screams at you to run away for being so close to the other boy. You ignore him, and force Steve to look at you. “Not here. Please.”
Steve looks between you and Billy, sees the pleading in your eyes. He sighs and reluctantly backs down.
“Seems like the sweetheart has you whipped, Harrington.” Billy remarks, a pleased smile on his face. “Makes me want her even more–Shit!”
Milk drips down Billy’s entire shirt.
“Oops,” you say, without any ounce of sincerity. You set the empty carton down and give the boy a aren’t I such a clutz? look. “God, silly me! I can’t hurt a fly, but it seems I also can’t hold a milk carton properly.”
Steve stifles a laugh next to you, and around the room a few others are brave enough to laugh as well. You smile innocently at Billy, who looks five seconds away from flipping the table. “Sorry about that.”
Billy, knowing he’s being watched, forces a smile himself. “You’ll pay for that.”
“Oh, I’m sure the shirt was only worth $5 anyways.”
This time Steve lets his laughs out and it calms you, steadies the shakiness you feel as you stand off against Billy. You hope you’re hiding how fucking terrified you are right now.
You wait for a response, but Billy only storms out of the lunchroom. It’s quiet for a few moments, but slowly the usual buzz in the room returns and everyone goes back to their conversations. You stand there, your heart still in your throat, and Steve’s hand brings you back.
“Hey, sit.” He tugs you back down and you’re too numb to fight back. “That was awesome, but are you okay?”
“Honestly? No.”
He thinks for a moment. “Alright, well. I’m still mad at you, so… Would it be shitty if I left?”
Despite everything, you find yourself laughing. “No, Steve. I understand.”
He lingers. “Are you sure? I mean, I can stay…”
“No,” you squeeze his hand. “We can talk more about this later. Alone, without possible psychotic spies around. Go.”
Steve bites his lip, but he’s still angry at you and he has so many things he wants to ask but you’re pale and still shaking from Billy. If he demands more from you, Steve knows it wouldn’t end well for either of you. You both need your space right now, that’s one thing he’s come to learn about you and relate to himself.
Sighing, he stands up and, to try and make up for being the asshole who leaves a vulnerable girl alone, Steve ruffles your hair. “Stay out of trouble, will ya?”
“No promises.” You smile up at him, though you know it looks as tired as it feels.
He hesitates again, pauses for a few seconds, but eventually he leaves. And then you’re left alone again.

As soon as school lets out, you march straight over to the middle school, knowing the kids are bound to be there. Dustin, specifically. He’s managed to slip through your fingers three times now.
Holy shit, you’re really losing your touch.
The second you find the little asshole you’re going to demand a code blue, doesn’t matter where you’ll be, and then interrogate him about Dart and figure out whatever the hell else he’s hiding from you. Then, you’ll make him clean Mews’ litter box for a whole month.
You’re so lost in your revenge planning thoughts, you almost walk right past Lucas and Max arguing in the parking lot.
“What is wrong with me? What’s wrong with you?” Max flies past you, her shoulder knocking against yours. You steady her and notice she’s talking to a very nervous looking Lucas.
Oh dear.
“I don’t understand!” He calls after her.
“Hey, what’s going on?” You try to intervene, but Max rips herself out of your grasp and gets in Lucas’ face.
“No!” She’s shouting now. “I don’t understand! You guys act like you want me to be your friend but–but then you treat me like garbage?”
Huh. She’d get along great with you and Steve.
Lucas looks over at you, helpless. “That’s not true!”
“Don’t look at me, buddy.” You tell him.
“Yes, it is! You go and hide in the AV Club, keeping secrets like we’re in second grade or something…” Max’s words catch in her throat, giving you a glimpse of the hurt girl underneath her indifferent exterior. “You know, I thought you guys wanted me in your party.”
You step close to her. “Max, I know it might not make any sense but–”
“Don’t tell me you’re in the party but I’m not.”
Now it’s your turn to look towards Lucas for help.
He sighs. “Look, we want you in our party, but it’s…”
“But what?” Max looks between you and Lucas, obviously becoming more and more hurt the longer this conversation goes on.
“There… there are just things.”
“Things, yeah.” You unhelpfully echo, but Lucas glares at you. “Sorry.”
He tries again. “There are things we can’t tell you, alright? For your own safety.”
“Lucas,” you warn, scared he’ll say too much, but Max just gets angrier.
“My own safety?”
“Yes!”
“Because I’m a girl?”
Well, that’s certainly one way to look at it.
Lucas scoffs. “What? No!”
You step in between the kids. “Alright, no. That’s not it at all and this conversation will just keep going in circles.”
Max ignores you. “Did you keep secrets from El?”
You and Lucas share a look, and then, at the same time, ask, “How do you know about El?”
“Did you?” She presses, but she’s looking more at you now than Lucas. She’s expecting you to take her side, to tell the boys to be nice to her and let her into the party, but the scar on your upper arm burns and your ankle faintly throbs. Those wounds will never fully go away; you’ll carry them with you your entire life.
You know how shitty it feels to be left out, but you also know how shitty the nightmares are as well. Max can never be brought into the Upside Down. Not when she has the chance to live a happy and normal life, free from any danger and turmoil.
“That was different,” you tell Max, trying to be as gentle as possible. “I really, really wish I could explain, but I can’t. It’s for your own good. If I could’ve prevented the party from going through what they have, I would’ve. But I couldn’t, and it haunts me every day.”
Max stares at you, and you admire how much spunk she has in her. You can see her thinking about what you’ve said, analyzing your words for any lies or deception, and you know she’s spent years doing this on her own. Your heart breaks for her.
Billy’s anger flashes in your mind. Max is an intelligent girl, but you know he’s the reason why.
When she can’t find any lies in your words, she just sighs and shakes her head. “You know what? Forget it. Okay? I don’t want to be in your stupid party anyway. I’m out. Have a nice life.”
Lucas stands there for a moment, processing what’s just happened. “Max!”
“You still stink, by the way.” She calls back, and you step back a bit from Lucas.
“Not to make this worse, but she’s right.”
Lucas glares at you but then sniffs his jacket, cringing with repulsion. “Oh, shit!”
He throws his hands up in the air and starts walking back towards the school. You don’t follow for a second, instead you watch as Max skates down towards the parking lot, where Billy is waiting. He has his arms spread against his car, and he seems to have noticed you long before you noticed him.
Billy’s eyes pierce yours and you shudder. There’s a hatred in his eyes that you’ve never seen before, unlike anything else. Again, your heart breaks for Max. You can’t imagine having an older brother like him.
You force yourself to turn around and join Lucas up ahead. Gross, sleazy men are the least of your concerns right now.
But then Lucas turns and makes eye contact with Billy before you can warn him not to. “Why is that guy glaring at us?”
You shove Lucas to keep walking. You don’t at all like the disdain in Billy’s eyes. “I poured milk all over his shirt today. Keep moving.”
The boy trips over a rock. “You what?”
“Long story, can we please just go inside and find Dustin? I need to talk to him.”
Lucas sighs, knowing that what he’s about to say will only anger you more. “I can’t find Dustin either. We were supposed to meet by our lockers after school to keep looking for Dart.”
You stop walking. “And he didn’t show?”
“Nope.”
“I’m going to kill him.” You know exactly where your brother is: at home hiding Dart and trying to figure out what to do with him.
Lucas senses you know something. “Y/N, what did he do?”
“Nothing!” You cover for Dustin quickly, because he’s your idiotic brother whose problems are also somehow yours. You’ll always have his back, but you also hate lying to Lucas. “He just probably had to head home immediately. Our mom has guests over.”
“Guests?”
“Yeah! Totally unexpected, I know, but you know how our mom is.” You start speed walking towards the bike rack. You need to head home. Now.
Lucas doesn’t believe you. “Y/N–”
“I’m sorry about Max, by the way!” You call as you run towards your bike. “Talk to her! Obviously don’t mention the… Stuff, but just know if it doesn’t work then it’s for the best! We have to keep her safe!” You’re rambling as you unlock your bike and hop on.
Lucas is not far behind you. “Are you seriously giving me girl advice as you’re running away from me to go cover for Dustin?”
“Yes. Bye, Lucas!”
He lets out a frustrated groan and calls after you, but you kick up your kickstand and immediately pedal away, leaving him in the dust. You feel bad, you do. Lucas is one of your favorites to interact with, he’s always been the most rational, but right now you have to go make sure your brother doesn’t burn down this entire town.
You’ll bake Lucas brownies later.

“Dustin Henderson, you’re so dead!” You slam the front door, sweaty and out of breath from your frantic bike ride.
“Y/N! What’s going on?” Your mother clutches her chest, obviously frightened by your sudden entrance.
You quickly walk towards Dustin’s closed door. “Everything’s fine, just sibling stuff.”
“Oh, well have you seen Mews?”
The door is locked. Of course the fucker locked the door. You start pounding on it. “Dustin, let me in before I radio all your friends.” Then, you call to your mother in the living room. “And no, I haven’t seen Mews, mom.”
You hear her sigh and mutter to herself where Mews could be, and you figure you’ll help her look after your idiot of a brother lets you into the room.
Again you pound against the door. “Dustin, I swear to god–”
The door swings open and a hand grabs your shirt and flings you inside, before promptly slamming the door behind you. Once you’re inside, Dustin turns to you, worried. “We have a problem.”
“Damn right we have a problem, where the hell have you been–” There, behind Dustin, is his turtle’s tank, completely shattered. Bile rises to your throat. “Please tell me Yurtle suddenly got super strong.”
Dustin walks over to the tank and holds up what looks like slimy plastic. “So, I kept Dart.”
“Dustin–”
“And he grew. A lot. This is his old skin.” He throws it back down. Then, backing away from you a bit, he admits, “I also can’t find him.”
It takes everything within you not to strangle the kid right then and there. You start pacing the room, mumbling to yourself, “I’m a good sister, I’m a good sister, I’m a good sister.”
“Y/N, I’m sorry, alright? I just, I got excited and Dart likes me and–”
A loud growl cuts your brother off. In a heartbeat, he’s back by your side, clutching your shirt in fear. Instinctively, you pull him behind you and reach for your switchblade that you always keep in your pocket now. After everything that’s happened, you find comfort in having the weapon always close to you.
Slowly, you and Dustin start walking towards where the growl came from. Your hand never leaves his back, ready to push him out the door in case anything happens. There’s horrible grunting noises coming from the corner of his room. As you walk closer, you see a trail of dark red scattered across the carpet and his chair.
It’s blood.
The realization makes your breath hitch.
The grunting gets louder as you approach the chair, and then, slowly, you peek behind it. There, you’re met with a gruesome sight.
Dart is eating Mews.
He's bigger than he was yesterday. Way bigger. Dangerously bigger.
You scream, unable to help it, and Dustin quickly covers your mouth so that you don’t alert your mother. The sound seems to alert Dart, however, and he raises his head from Mews’ stomach, covered in blood, and lets out a horrific screech.
Its mouth opens the same way the monster’s did at Jonathan’s last year, the same monster that had almost killed you and your friends. The sight paralyzes you in fear as the memories come crashing back from that night. The scar on your arm burns again. Your ankle twings in pain, and you feel sick.
Your cat is dead.
And Dustin has been hiding a fucking baby demogorgon in your home.

It’s five o’clock in the morning, and Colt Seavers has already been standing in the misty parking lot for two hours when he finally sees your car pulling in the entrance.
The last twelve hours have been absolute torture for him. One minute, he was walking into the crowded club to drop off some equipment with the stunt coordinator; the next, he was sharing space at the bar with you, trapped under your spell despite all his vows that he wouldn’t keep pushing this flirty thing you’ve been sharing.
He’s been conflicted for months now, knowing that his feelings for you are only getting deeper but also knowing that a relationship with him is the last thing you need. No matter how hard he tries to be noble for you, he just can’t get free from the way you enrapture him so completely — the way he thinks of you every moment of the day, dreams of a future where you could feel about him the way he feels about you.
And he honestly thought you didn’t — that you couldn’t — until last night. When he completely wrecked everything, including your heart.
Colt squeezes his eyes shut again, remembering the way he pulled back from you just a few seconds before your lips would have met. In the moment, it seemed like the right thing to do: cut it off, laugh it off, let it go before he betrayed how absolutely captivated he is by everything you do.
He keeps telling himself that he did the right thing. That he’s no good for you, and you’re better off not getting confused by his overwhelming feelings for you. But he keeps seeing your face — the way all the light in your eyes vanished, the way your shoulders slumped and your expression wilted. He had no idea there were actual, genuine feelings on your part. And for him?
Colt has spent the last twelve hours deliberating how to handle this situation. He knows he has to make it right with you, but the question is how. His inner monologue has quite the speech ready for him. You can’t even THINK about confessing your feelings. You’re the one who has no future, no big dreams, maybe not even much longer to live! You have no right to force that kind of life on anyone. Especially if you really care.
After hours of tormented decision-making, Colt has come to the same conclusion he always does: he can’t let you know how he feels about you. He’s got to apologize, make sure you know he didn’t mean to hurt you, let you think he’s just been flirting for fun, maybe even rekindle your injured friendship. But he absolutely cannot let you know he’s in love with you.
And he is, isn’t he? He wouldn’t have waited with bated breath in the parking lot for two hours if he wasn’t madly, hopelessly, irremediably in love with you.
Colt has planned this conversation thousands of times since last night, but the only thing he can choke out when you climb out of your car and start toward the studio is, “Hey.”
You glance up at him in surprise, clearly less than pleased to find him hanging around the parking lot so early. His heart tightens at the sight of your pale face, the dark circles under your eyes betraying what was probably a sleepless night. “Hey,” you respond emotionlessly.
“Do you have a second?” Colt asks. His voice isn’t quite as strong as he hoped, but the sight of you is sending jolts of electricity through his veins.
You look to the side, pursing your lips and injecting a hint of coldness into your voice that he has never heard before. “Honestly, Colt, no offense,” you say plainly, “but I don’t really want to talk right now.”
Colt presses his lips together, knowing he’s the reason for this uncharacteristic coldness. “Believe me, I understand,” he blurts out, “but I’ve got to talk to you about last night.”
“There’s nothing to talk about,” you shoot back, fixing your stare on him again. Behind the coldness in your eyes is a deep sorrow that twists his heart. “I misread the signals, I overthought it, it’s not a big deal. You don’t need to explain anything.”
“Yes, I do,” he insists. “I messed up big time. I haven’t had a moment’s peace since last night, and I have to get this off my chest, okay? You don’t have to say anything.” He knows he sounds desperate, but he’s past caring. “Please, just hear me out and let me explain.”
You hold his stare, unrelenting, unforgiving. He loves you for it. “Fine.”
Colt releases a breath he didn’t know he was holding, overwhelmed with relief that you’re even willing to listen to him. His biggest worry all night was that you wouldn’t speak to him, wouldn’t let him make things right.
He plunges right in, knowing it will be messy but not caring. “Listen, I’m really bad at this, but I’m going to give it my best go. These past few months that I’ve known you… it’s been really nice. You’re amazing to be around, and I always feel better after I’ve hung out with you. You’ve honestly been the best thing about this shoot.”
Your expression doesn’t change, but Colt can feel the iciness in your gaze softening ever so slightly. It gives him the courage to press on, even though he knows what he’s about to say is going to devastate himself.
“The thing is,” he continues, heart in his throat, “I’ve been so caught up in just… flirting and messing around, that I haven’t paid attention to how it might affect you. I haven’t been paying attention to the signals either.”
You furrow your brow at him. “What are you saying?”
Colt, you are the worst at this, man.
“I’m saying… I’m really sorry that I hurt your feelings last night. I’ve been replaying it over and over in my mind, and I can’t get past the way you looked at me when I pulled away and laughed everything off. Just, the look in your eyes and the way you looked like I had let you down — it’s been killing me.”
Your expression finally softens, and Colt hates himself for the words that are coming out of his mouth. “I thought this was just a fun flirtation between friends and that it would be better to keep any physical stuff out of it. I didn’t know there was anything on your side. Honestly. Not until I saw how much it hurt you for me to just… act like it meant nothing.”
There it is again — that hint of betrayal in your eyes. Now that Colt knows you care for him, his decision to “do the right thing” suddenly seems like the most gut-wrenching, agonizing thing he’s ever done.
It’s all I can do. I have nothing to offer, nothing to make a relationship worth the pain it would cause. I love you, and that’s why I won’t tell you.
Your brow is still lined with confusion, trying to parse out his real meaning among the confusion of words. “But you’re still saying… it didn’t mean anything to you.”
This is killing him. “Of course it meant something to me,” Colt blurts out before he can stop himself completely. He tries to amend it. “Man, I am so bad at this. What I’m trying to say is… I would never have even started a flirtation with you if I knew it would hurt you. Please believe me when I say I would never, ever, in a gazillion years want to do anything to hurt you or make you feel like I don’t care about your feelings. I should have been more sensitive and realized that I can’t just… lead you on without it mattering.”
Lead you on. As if I didn’t mean every word I’ve ever said to you. As if I wouldn’t die for you right now.
You nod, pursing your lips again with a clearer, more determined look in your eyes. “So, just so we’re clear,” you say slowly, “there’s nothing going on? All this flirting and hanging out and almost-kissing — it’s just been for kicks?”
“No, no, not just for kicks,” he backtracks immediately. Even when he’s trying to be noble, he can’t betray your trust that far. “I didn’t mean it like that.”
“What did you mean, Colt?” He can hear the genuine confusion in your voice. “I don’t understand what you’re trying to tell me.”
Colt takes a deep breath, closing his eyes as he tries to focus on the right thing to say. “I’m just trying to tell you that I am so, so sorry for anything I’ve done to hurt you. I’ve been stupid and insensitive and awful, and I wish there was a way I could make it up to you. I just…” He opens his eyes, fixes them on yours so you know he’s telling the truth. “I couldn’t let this go without making it right with you. No matter what, you mean a lot to me, and the thought of losing your friendship honestly makes me miserable. Please just tell me I haven’t messed this up beyond repair.”
Please tell me I haven’t lost your trust completely. Please tell me I haven’t damaged the person I love most beyond repair.
You stare him down for what feels like an eternity, your discerning gaze burning holes into him. Finally, you sigh, seeming to come to a decision. “No, you haven’t,” you tell him at last. “I mean, I’m still trying to process everything and sort it all out, but… it means a lot that you wanted to have this conversation.” A note of humor slips into your voice, and the twinkle in your eyes makes a very welcome reappearance. “I mean, you waited for me in the parking lot like a stalker, so that says something. Not sure what.”
Colt laughs out loud at that, all the intense pressure of the night lessening with your words. “I thought about camping outside your hotel, but I thought it might be a little much.”
“Yeah, it would have been,” you agree, scuffing your shoes on the pavement.
Colt feels like the weight of the entire world has been lifted off his shoulders, but he knows he has to keep handling this the right way if he doesn’t want to risk hurting you again.
“So, are we okay?” he asks sincerely.
You nod, smoothing your hair back and closing your eyes while you think about your response. “Yeah. Yeah, we are. Just… getting some closure and some straight-shooting takes a lot of stress out of this.”
“Yeah, me, too,” Colt agrees. “I’m just sorry it took me so long to shoot it straight with you.”
If you can really call this shooting straight.
You shake your head, raising your eyes to meet his again. “No, I should have been more upfront, too,” you admit. “It would have saved me a lot of trouble.”
Colt’s first reaction is to argue, to insist that you haven’t done a single thing wrong, that this whole tangle has been caused by his inability to let go of the feelings he has for you, but he knows it’s best to let that go. Better to end on a positive note.
“Friends?” he asks tentatively.
“Friends.” You grin at him, obviously as relieved as he is to have mended your relationship.
Great, just friends again. Exactly what we wanted. Colt elects to ignore his inner monologue this time.
With the tension lifted at last, you heave a grand sigh and nudge his shoulder in the old familiar way, heading in the direction of the studio.
“So, where are you off to?” Colt asks you, falling in step beside you.
“Train station set,” you reply lightly. “Filming for that scene is supposed to start next week, so I’m scrambling trying to get everything finished. It’s the biggest set I’ve ever created from scratch, so it’s been a serious challenge.”
Colt grins down at you, nudging your shoulder with his the same way you just did. “I’m sure it’ll be amazing,” he assures you, meaning every word of it. “Your sets always are.”
You grin back up at him, your cheerfulness infectious. “What about you? Any big stunts today?”
“Nah, just rehearsing some choreography for a fight scene. Easier schedule for the rest of this week.”
“That’s good,” you respond. The art trailer, empty in these early morning hours, is coming into sight now. “Maybe you can stop throwing yourself off moving vehicles for awhile.”
Colt smirks. “Yeah, that’s the plan. Unless something crazy happens on my way to the gas station or something.”
“Oh, sure. You never know with a Citgo.”
The two of you share a laugh, and suddenly everything feels back to normal. Maybe it can never be completely normal again, but after the fears that kept Colt awake all night, this feels like he’s just stepped into paradise after being cast out.
“Hey, bad guys come in all shapes and sizes,” Colt informs you, feeling his sense of humor coming back full force. “Sometimes it’s a hard-boiled gangster chasing you on top of a transfer truck; sometimes it’s a plastic bag flying off the pavement and around your head.”
“Maybe that’s the real reason why recycling is so important,” you quip. A few more steps, and the two of you are standing at the door to the art trailer, the pink rays of sunrise beginning to touch the tops of your heads. “Well, here’s my stop. Thanks again for talking with me. It really means a lot.”
Colt nods, a genuine smile crossing his face. “I couldn’t let things be strained between us. Who would patch together the props I destroy in every take?” he teases you.
“Who would destroy the handmade props I painstakingly create every day?”
“Publicity stunts wouldn’t have been the same without you to critique my color coordinating choices.”
“I was really going to miss you sneaking me a packet of Mini Muffins every morning.”
“Consider the Mini Muffins sneaked.”
You grin at that, and Colt’s heart speeds up a few beats just at the sight. He’s glad to have this image — your captivating smile, framed by the pastel light of the sunrise, happiness sparkling in your eyes — to replace the one from last night.
You don’t say a word before turning to open the door to the art trailer, clearly needing some space, so Colt turns to walk away, but the door doesn’t close behind you. When he turns back to face you, you’re lingering in the doorway, an unreadable expression on your face. Colt hesitates, not sure what you expect from him, but he’s cut off by you closing the distance between the two of you and wrapping your arms around his neck.
What what what what what what WHAT WHAT WHAT—
Colt isn’t sure this is the best idea, but he certainly isn’t going to make the mistake of pushing you away again. Instead, he lets his arms fold around your waist, pulling you close against him. Every muscle in his body aches to hold you as tight as he can, and it takes all his self-control not to lift his head up a few inches, to whisper in your ear, You’re every sweet dream I’ve ever had. You’re everything I hoped love would turn out to be.
You don’t make a move to release him, and suddenly Colt realizes: this is your way of letting go of him. You’re taking one last moment to savor this closeness before you resign yourself to a simple friendship and an inevitable goodbye. With that realization, Colt grips you tighter, lets his face rest in the crook of your neck while he breathes you in.
The sun keeps rising, and still you hold onto each other as if this is the last time you’ll ever see each other.
Colt feels your arms loosen their hold around his neck slightly, and he takes that as a cue to release the death-grip he has around your waist. He didn’t realize he could feel your pounding heart against his chest until you’ve pulled back a few inches.
He’s surprised, though, when you don’t get go of him completely. You let your hands rest on his broad shoulders, your eyes searching his own for some answer that you can’t quite grasp. It’s as if you know he’s holding something back — as if you can tell how deeply he feels for you just by the way he stays absorbed in the warmth of your gaze.
A sad smile tugs at the corners of your lips, and you lift one hand to rest on the side of Colt’s face. His heart instantly starts rocketing again, and all he can imagine is that you’re finally going to go for the kiss that has almost happened three times now. He holds his breath, knowing that he can’t trust himself not to seize you and kiss you with all the passion he’s holding inside.
Your fingertips trace the side of his face slowly, intimately, traveling over his cheekbone, down his jaw, right under his lips. His skin feels like it’s burning from the inside, incinerating him with heat. He knows he’s still holding your waist too tight for someone who is “just a friend,” but holding you is the only thing keeping him sane right now.
Your gaze slips down for a fraction of a second, landing on the spot where your fingers are resting tenderly. Colt’s hands are shaking from the tension. All he can think of is how close your lips are to his, how effortless it would be to lean forward a few inches and live out the daydream he’s had a thousand times before. He doesn’t even blink, unwilling to miss a second of being this close to you again.
Finally, finally, you take mercy on him and lift your fingers from his face, your own expression betraying the level of affection you feel. Right now, all Colt wants to do is close his eyes and let you trail your fingers over his face for the rest of his life, but your touch is already gone, and he finally feels like he can breathe again.
You take an unhurried step back, your eyes never leaving his. Your hands slowly slide down from his shoulders, his letting go of your waist at the same time. The distance between you suddenly feels miles wide, and it’s quite obvious that both of you want to close it again.
But neither of you does.
“Okay,” you murmur, eyes drifting across his face. The early morning sunlight is dancing through the strands of your hair, alighting on the dust particles in the air to create a mystical glow around your face. “I should go.”
Colt barely even registers his own response, still so dazed from the past few moments. “Me, too.”
You take a step inside the art trailer door, eyes hazy. “See you later?”
“Of course.”
You give him one last soft smile and walk into the art trailer. But Colt stands in the light of the rising sun for a long time after you’ve gone.

When Cersha returned to her chamber, she was not surprised to see Davos perched on the bay windowsill, his fingers laced around his bent knee while his injured leg stretched out beside him. She had expected him to be blistering mad at her abrupt dismissal earlier that afternoon, but he was a vision of weary resignation as his forehead rested on the glass. The watery light filtered through the fresh linen shirt he had dressed in, showing the curve of his torso and the sinewy length of his arms. He lifted his head and smiled as the door creaked shut, she saw that he was rid of the patchy beard that had grown in the twelve days since the battle. Had it really been such a short time?
“My, I’ve never seen you so clean.” She teased.
“All in service of you, my lady.” He got shakily to his feet and bowed mockingly.
“Davos, please.” She sighed, the elation of her epiphany at the sept already waning.
“What?” He cocked his head to the side and offered a slanted smirk. “I’m your sworn protector, aren’t I? Chastely sworn… we both know how that turned out, now don’t we?”
She reddened at the memory of his lips stamping wet marks across her skin. She said nothing, only rolling her eyes. He sat back heavily on the sill and clucked his tongue.
“Were you sitting on that lie for long?”
“Only since…” She drifted off, feeling a wave of residual panic at the memory of the night before. Davos’ face softened and she shied away from the earnestness of it. “Look, I’m sorry. I am. I just, I wasn’t sure how Oscar would take it if he knew who you were or that a Blackwood had killed a Night’s Watchman on his land, I thought he might…”
“Execute me on the spot?”
“No! No, he’d never kill unless he had to. I was afraid he may send you back to your family to be punished for desertion, or that he might have just thrown you in the dungeon or something for starting this whole mess.”
“’Starting this whole mess,’ is that what you think? Is that why you still don’t trust me after all we’ve been through?”
“No! You were defending your family’s honour, I cannot fault you that, but the battle began with the swing of your sword. That is the truth. I feared Oscar’s retribution, but his ire is for the lord regent who instructed the default on the assize.”
“Always trying to protect me, aren’t you? What ire could that boy have? He looks as if-”
“As much ire as I’ll have if you speak ill of him.” He just scoffed and shook his head. “Asides, it matters not. Oscar recognised you.”
“I could have told you that,” He said. “If you’d only told me of your plans.”
“I see that now.” She ran a hand through her hair. “I surmised you would not take kindly to concealing your identity from the regent high lord. I did not want to fight you.”
“Why?” His expression darkened as he pushed to his feet and limped a step closer to her. “Are you afraid of me?” A step closer. “Think I might kill you?”
Another step closed the gap between them, his hand coming to rest feather-light on her neck. Her eyelids drooped as the tickles of his callouses fizzed through her brain.
“We’ve come this far crow boy.” She looked up through her lashes, seeing him obscured behind soft focus and beige streaks. “If you wanted to kill me, you would have done it by now.” She pressed forward until there was a slight pressure on her throat. “I’ve seen the fire in you, but I’m not scared. It burns for me, does it not?”
“Aye.” He swallowed, his Adam's apple bobbing as his pupils blew out into glossy black discs in the confines of his dark eyes. “All for you, my lady.”
That was enough to make her melt into his touch, savouring the warm, full feeling that radiated from his rough hand as it formed the perfect collar around her swan-curved neck. That feeling, not of possession but of belonging, as people sometimes belong to each other. Her hands found his neck in some attempt to mirror the experience back to him, thumbs stroking the smooth skin from his ears to his collarbones as his eyes drifted closed. His breaths grew ragged as he leaned in to rest his forehead on hers.
“I think…” His nose brushed hers, lips so close that every breath was a heady exchange of essence, hearts racing in syncopated time. “...I want to know what it’s like to kiss you.”
“Is that so surprising?” Her fingers stroking his jaw pulsed a rhythm in his veins.
“I don’t kiss.” He growled weakly, stomach fluttering like a virgin maid.
“Why?” Her breath on his lips was the ghost of a kiss.
“Brings all sorts of… feelings.” Her hands were in his hair now, scratching gently at his scalp and savouring the rabbity softness of his freshly washed locks until blissful tremors weakened his knees.
“Is that such a bad thing?” He let go of a whimper as she rubbed her nose against his.
“If I kiss you, I’ll never stand to be parted from you. I’ll have to marry you.”
She pulled back, all the silvery feeling rushing through the channel of their meeting eyes.
“Kiss me.”
In that soft afternoon light, safe at last behind the stony battlements with the dull roar of the rushing moat shielding them from silence, in a room lovingly furnished with the colours of their liege, with the perfumed steam from the bath behind the fish mural divider wreathing around them, they shook off their houses like two bucks losing their antlers in spring. It was as if there had been a levee between them, weeping water from long spiderweb cracks, and now the stones came bursting out and there it was. The torrent of feeling, the lips parting, the passion, the crush, the smelting together of two beings in this primeval ritual.
At last they broke apart, her gasping for air and him kissing down her neck, whining against her perfect skin.
“Davos.” She panted. He nipped her. She took a handful of black hair and tugged it firmly. “Davos!”
“Mm…” He tilted his head back and she saw his eyes clouded by lust.
“Behave.” She pecked his swollen lips. “I must bathe first. I stink.”
A mischievous grin spread across his face and he buried his nose in her neck, inhaling deeply.
“You smell-” Sniff. “-fantastic.”
As she lifted her arm to push him away he stuck his face right into the pit and drew in a long breath.
“Like a woman.” He sighed dreamily and began peppering kisses across her chest.
“Get away!” She laughed, lifting her arms and throwing back her head to give him more access to the skin exposed by her dress. “You foul beast.”
He just chuckled and kissed all over her collarbones, bending double as she backed away until they bumped into the tub. He whined when he realised where they had ended up.
“Sweetling.” He pouted, trying to coax her back toward the bed.
“Davos, anyone would think you’re starving.” She rolled her eyes with an exasperated smile. “Come on. Won’t you wash my hair for me?”
“You know slavery is outlawed in the Seven Kingdoms?”
“Just get in the bath.” She pursed her lips derisively, letting her hands wander up under his shirt to explore the dips and curves of his back. “Just… soak with me for a while. Please?”
He scoffed and she could see him fighting against a blissful smile as her nails raked up his spine.
“Fine.”
“Thank you.” She murmured. “Was that so hard?”
He smiled in that exasperated way, peeled off his shirt and dropped his breeches and underclothes in a swift, practical motion. For an instant she was stunned by the beauty of him; the subtle dips and rises of muscle on his thin limbs and torso, the grazes, bruises and old faded scars that each served as a reminder of passionate fury roused when something he loved was at risk, and the supple pink skin of his dick that hung half-hard by his thigh.
“What?” He grinned. “Like what you see?”
“Your wound.” She pointed to the bandage on his thigh, trying to save face.
“Of course.” He rolled his eyes. “Do you want me in the bath or not?”
She bit her lip.
“You can dress it again later.” He had pulled it off and clambered awkwardly into the milky water before she had the chance to protest, gripping both sides of the tub as he gingerly lowered himself down. “Gods, that’s lovely.”
“You’re always putting yourself in harm’s way for me.”
“You love it.” She did love it. “Though I hardly think a bath can be considered ‘harm’s way.’ Besides, this is far nicer than the bath they drew for me. Just hot water, a rag and a bar of soap. No…” He picked out a floating rose petal and inspected it before letting it float away like a grumpkin’s sailboat. “...luxury.”
She noticed then that she had indeed been showered in what little frills Riverrun could afford with an encroaching war. Roses from the gardens floating on water white from goat’s milk; she suspected from the lactonic, pastoral scent that it was not the cow’s milk favoured by most highborn ladies for bathing. The water was silky through her fingers, from salt and honey she assumed, and lavender oil turned the steam heavy and narcotic.
