someone write a 50 page psychoanalytical essay about eleanor guthrie so i don't have to. about her rotating list of uncomfortably eroticized paternal figures & the chokehold they have on her & how she can never fully be close to any of them although she wants to (especially flint) & her unconscious repression of self & her unending need for approval and recognition etc etc etc and how its poetic that she died in the 2nd spanish raid of nassau when her mother died in the first and so she was literally disconnected from maternal influence by the invasion of violent men in more ways than one since she was pregnant when she died - & how she dies as a heroine saving the life of another woman when she couldnt save herself and her potential daugher - & how she dies in flints arms never getting to tell him all she feels or thinks but how they have a silent understanding & how flint has known her since she was an adolescent and saw her grow up and how she's one of the only people he ever smiles at or talks to with respect and how miranda told eleanor that "i feel like we're old friends . . . james talks about you all the time" and also about how they almost kissed when flint was drunk but then he kissed her on the forehead and left because he didn't want to jeopardize their existing dynamic and knew she had an unhealthy relationship with men as it was... and how...

I made a supercut of every instance of the word partner (or partnership) in Black Sails... mostly as a side effect of wanting to analyze how the word was used in the show. More information/breakdown under the cut.
"Partner", "partners", or "partnership" is said a total of 92 times in the show, not counting 11 times when it's part of a "previously on". Of those 92 instances, 11 are in Season One, 24 are in Season 2, 33 are in Season 3, and 24 are in Season 4. Some form of the word gets said at least once in all but eight episodes (1x01, 1x05, 3x01, 3x04, 3x09, 4x02, 4x03, and 4x05). The episode with most instances is 3x02 with a grand total of 7. In the video, the clips are arranged in chronological order according to when they appear in the show. I used the transcript site to double-check my work so I'm pretty confidant I didn't miss anything.
A lot of the time the relationships that get called partnerships also get referred to with other terms (friendship, alliance, husband/wife), either at different times than they're called partnerships or in conjunction with the term, but "partner" as a term interests me because it is non-specific in a way that allows for it to hold a lot of different meanings, sometimes all at once. Black Sails is clearly very specific about what terms are used for relationships, just as it is specific about what name a character is called by, and often there is significance placed on moments when a relationship is called a partnership. (Miranda and Flint in 2x06, Jack and Anne in 2x10, Flint and Sliver in 3x03, etc.)
SO I've made a full chart with details on each of the 92 instances which you can look at here. It has the episode each instance is from, who says it, and to what partnership they are referring. Generally this is pretty straightforward, though sometimes a character is directly referencing one partnership in a way that implicitly applies the label to another, i.e. when Silver says he's "not the first to have been a partner to [Flint] in this way", he is referring to himself as Flint's partner, but also implicitly stating that Gates and Miranda were each Flint's partner as well. Whenever this happens I've noted it in the chart. I've also noted when characters are speaking hypothetical partnerships that do not (yet) exist, or do not (yet) exist in the form they are currently discussed, and when partnerships are referred to in the past tense.
Highlights of some stuff I found interesting:
Silver and Flint are referred to as partners (or as having a partnership) a total of 7 times, and implicitly labelled as such once. This is more than any other partnership between individuals, and depending on how you count more than any partnership between groups, too (see below). The first time they're ever referred to as partners is by Silver in 3x03
Jack and Anne are just behind them with a total of 6, followed by Eleanor and Rogers with 5
The individual relationships between Jack and Max, and between Max and Anne are each referred to using some form of partner/partnership three times, and Jack, Anne, and Max a group of three are referred to using the term once by Max and once by Jack-- though when Jack uses it (while speaking to Marion Guthrie) he doesn't specify who he's speaking about could arguably also be including Featherstone, and possibly Idelle
The pirate and maroon alliance is referred to using partners/partnership 6 times (7 if you count one instance where Flint is used as synecdoche for the pirates as a group), and there are two instances of partner/partners being used when discussing another person or group joining the alliance (Jack in the first case, and Julius and his men in the second), for a total of 9 times that some form of the alliance is discussed using partners/partnership
Other than Flint, the only person who is ever referred to as Silver's partner is Max
Eleanor says partner (or some variation) more than any other character, for a total of 14 times. Runners up are Max (12) and Vane (9)
4 out of the 9 times Vane uses partner/partnership, he's talking about a partnership between Eleanor and someone, though that someone is not always him. Of the remaining 5 instances, two are in reference to his partnership with Teach and two involve Jack in some way (one with the two of them and Flint, and one in the context of Jack joining the pirate/slave alliance)
Max never uses the word partner to describe any relationships that she is not directly a part of, unless you count one instance of speaking broadly about her own experiences in a way that also includes Eleanor's (when she says the chair "demands you win partners" to get it)
Flint doesn't say any form of the word partner until 3x05, though before that point there are other people who call him their partner or apply the term to relationships he has
Thomas says "partner" a total of 3 times, two referring directly to Flint and one speaking generally but in a conversation about a partnership between him and Flint. Miranda says "partners" twice, both times about herself and Flint
"Partner" is used as a verb exactly once, by Madi
Madi, Mr. Scott, and the Maroon Queen each only say partner(s) once (they're not the only characters who only say it once, but i did think the family pattern was neat)

While what happened in the end was tragic I'll admit there is some comedic potential in imagining Sorahiko and Nana husband trying to hide what they're doing in the silliest ways
Tumblr media
Nana, heavily pregnant and holding a box of snacks: Where have you been?!
Sorahiko, holding his cape to the doorframe in order to hide Mr Shimura’s disheveled appearance: Ahhh? (Bro, hurry up)
Mr Shimura, trying to clean his face and teary-eyed because he’s the one who wanted to go home ASAP after a rough night: (Say we were socializing and we got into a bar fight!)

in s3ep2, eleanor tells mrs. hudson she doesnt come from privilege, which mrs. hudson immediately denies. but i think its SOOO telling of eleanor's character! she sees herself as a woman in a world full of men, which she is, but she completely ignores the class and racial divides she obviously benefits from. she claims she has no privilege to mrs. hudson, who comes from no money and works as a chambermaid to woodes rodgers, leaving behind her beloved children to make sure eleanor has clean clothes and to empty her chamberpot. eleanor had power on nassau, power she wielded for her own benefit and to the severe detriment of others. obviously she experienced misogyny, but she was never forced into poverty, never forced into sex work, never forced into service of any kind, because her father was wealthy and she was born into a higher class. her experiences of misogyny and oppression are vastly different than mrs. hudson's. but for her to tell a chambermaid she experienced no privilege? it's laughably untrue. eleanor oversaw and directly profitted from the trade of hundreds if not thousands of slaves on nassau, was raised by "chattel property of the guthrie estate" mr. scott, who is never even given a name in his own tongue (on screen, at least), never showed kindness to anyone but those who put money in her pocket because she was born with that money and that trade empire already in the guthrie name. she had to fight to get it, and fight she did, but the fact that those things were so close to her reach just by virtue of the circumstances of her birth? that's privilege, whether or not she sees it that way

Hiii it's ask wave time~ who are ten of your favorite characters? Don't worry it doesn't have to be ranked in order, and it doesn't even have to be ten if you don't want! Just who stands out to you? If I’ve sent this already, my bad 😭
You may have sent it before, but my memory is not great (when you have 17,000+ posts, it becomes incredibly hard to find old ones). Anyways, ten of my favourite characters? Glad you didn't say top ten. I could never do top ten. But I can try to pick out ten random ones. I might end up going overboard and doing 10-15, though. I may also end up mostly pulling from Comic Book media and Rick Riordan books for now, but I know your blog is mostly about Bob's Burgers, so I'm gonna throw in two of those characters too. I like Bob's Burgers myself too, but I just haven't watched it as much lately (and haven't posted about it due to other hyperfixations, anyways).
Martian Manhunter: He's just always appealed to me, ever since I was a little kid. Something about this incredibly lonely superhero, the last of his kind...it really hits me in the heart. I relate to it.
Two-Face: Two-Face was the first supervillian i loved. I think my parents used to tell me I raced about him as a kid after seeing a rerun of his 90s TV Show episode. I don't think I could say his name right, though. This story can't be fact-checked, because my dad currently isn't at home (and I don't know how I talked way back when i was 4-5).
Mister Freeze: I've always liked Mister Freeze, but I like him even more than usual now. His grief over losing his wife, and his obsession with curing her...god, that's relatable. I lost my mom in 2022, and it still affects me. Not always in ways you'd expect, but it definitely still affects me. So I understand Freeze's pain and heartache. I really feel for him.
Cyclops: Cyclops wasn't my favourite X-Man as a kid, but he's definitely my favourite now. I see so much of myself in him. He's intensely relatable. Lonely, awkward socially, obsession with routine and with order, Cyclops is like the most relatable character you could give me. I love him.
Doctor Octopus: Doctor Octopus was my favourite Spiderman villian as a kid. I always read into him as being very relatable. This timid scientist who just goes along with whatever his boss tells him to do (largely because he's too scared to be assertive and take charge of operations), he eventually snaps and becomes a genius supervillian. I feel like that can be said to reflect my anger issues (which I hide whenever i'm in public, too). So he was really relatable.
The Hulk/Bruce Banner: Similar to the Doctor Octopus explanation above, The Hulk appeals to my sense of dual natures. My anger issues, depressive episodes, my negative emotions generally all end up repressed unless i'm alone or around my dad. So a character who pretty much has two split personalities (both of which embody my public vs my private persona), it almost feels like it's designed to be relatable.
Electro: i almost chose Mysterio (since I love his theatricality and sense of style with his crimes), but I feel like Electro popped into my head slightly easier. I still vividly remember the Electro episode of The Spectacular Spider-Man, despite not seeing it in years. A man who's now trapped in a body made of pure electricity, electro can't touch people, eat or drink things, he can't do anything a normal human being would do. And so he snaps, broken by his transformation. That type of story is so sad that I still remember it. I love Electro. His old comics aren't as good as that episode of the TV show, but I still love him.
Nico di Angelo: Nico di Angelo is a character I've loved since I first read the Percy Jackson series (whenever that actually first was). A lonely outcast, never accepted by anyone else, who closes himself off from the world after losing family and beginning to feel unaccepted. He really, really speaks to my soul.
Frank Zhang: Besides just being from Canada (like I am) and having self-confidence issues (also like me), he really is just a character I find fun and relatable. Not too much else I can say here, but I do relate to him.
Jason Grace: Jason Grace is a character who I love so much. He's a genuinely good and selfless person, a really great guy. His rigid sense of order (due to growing up at the roman camp) really appeals to me, too. I like order and some sense of rules. I go to bed at around the same time every night, I eat at similar times every day, I just like order. Chaos is stressful. We're getting off topic, but yeah. I love Jason Grace, and his death really got to me. I couldn't read the riordan books after that, because i missed him too much.
Teddy (Bob's Burgers): Probably the most relatable major character on Bob's Burgers, this man plagued by neuroses and issues really reminds me of myself. I'm only 20 (and he's like 50 or something), but I still really feel like I'll end up like him one day. Few friends, a therapist, awkward and lonely, etc. The only major difference between us is that I hate hands on work (like the stuff he does as a handyman).
Aunt Gayle (Bob's Burgers): The other big-ish character on Bob's Burgers who I relate to. Really, that show knows how to make me like and relate to characters. Just give them an infinite number of neuroses and mental issues, and you're gonna end up with a character who I feel speaks to my soul. A lonely woman who's got no friends besides her extended family, a lady who lives alone (besides her many cats) and who's incredibly sensitive to criticism... she's very, very similar to me. Very similar. Well, except for my strong allergies to cats.
Thank you for the ask, by the way. I now realize I could probably make an infinite number of lists like these, if given time. It'd become exhausting to do all the time, but I do like so many characters. I've dabbled in so many fandoms over 20 years, I could make a list at least 50 characters wide, if i had to. I just think i'd slowly begin to feel tired and agitated as I wrote it. But still, you give me this prompt again one day, tell me to try and pick new people, and we'd probably be able to get something out of it. Idk, that's just a random thought i've had.
