Part of me wants to empathize with the cishet man who is afraid to even appear gay. I think what the cishet man often fears by being seen as queer in dress, in mannerism, in taste, in speech, is that he fears his manhood will be stripped away, his humanity questioned. It's uncomfortable to think. It's uncomfortable to feel, and when you often don't face that for who you are, it feels even more biting. It feels like you have been stripped of a comfort you have had for decades, for your whole life, in one fell swoop.

It's certainly rooted in queerphobia, sure, but as a trans man? I would be lying by omission if I pretended like my own manhood wasn't questioned daily because of who I am, if I pretended like I haven't face violence for my manhood. I would be lying if I pretended like it's perfectly safe every time when people suspect I am queer (not even trans, but "just" queer).

is it weird that as a trans guy i don't like being called a boy? i just feel like the only time people ever call me a boy it's either in a way of like "you're a little tiny baby child" or in a transphobic "cuntboy femboy theyfab trans identified female" way. like it's always either to treat me like a child or to treat me like a girl that's pretending to be a man

Masculinization Tips

From a guy 10 months on T who successfully passed travelling alone in 3 very anti trans states

***Disclaimer: this post is meant for people who want to go stealth as a cis man. Tips can also be used in whatever manner you want. In no way is this post saying "don't be visibly queer", its simply a guide to use as you see fit.***

Baggy clothes are your friend, wearing one shirt size larger will help hide a binder. Over shirts are excellent at hiding your frame. For shorts, wear knee length, preferably cargo shorts. Otherwise, men's pants, preferably jeans, I'd go for a relaxed or straight fit. In general, cis men don't tend to put a lot of thought or effort in how they dress. Keep it simple.

Don't wear accessories. I feel like this goes without saying. Cis men don't wear jewelry. Choose a basic looking watch.

Keep your clothes to dark or neutral colors. Think boring stuff like black, gray, maybe some beige. If you're adding color, do red, blue, or green, but again keep it dark. Definitely don't wear pastels.

If you have a "queer" hairstyle, cover it with a baseball cap or backwards snapback. Only those two options. Cis men in red states don't tend to wear other types of hats, besides maybe cowboy hats.

The way you walk is more important than you think. Basically, femme has more of a hip sway, masc has more of a shoulder sway. Femme has more of a glide, masc has more of a bounce. Picture every 2000's male action hero and walk like that.

If you're not on T, I'd recommend practicing talking in a lower register.

For the uber paranoid folks:

If you're worried about folks seeing a name that might not match your presentation: Anywhere you're paying for things and you would have to hand your card over, try to use cash instead (eg., fast food drive through, etc).

If you dont use an STP device and someone confronts you about sitting to pee (this would be extremely rare) you "have a medical condition that makes it hard to pee while standing." HIPPA laws prevent you from having to give any more information than that. But also like 35% of cis men sit to pee anyway. You'll be fine.

One of the other issues I have with 'men are happier/better when they embrace femininity, being feminine is freeing for everyone' is that the standards for what count as feminine to begin with are so entrenched in misogyny and toxic masculinity that we fail to realise that some of what we deem 'feminine' is just...average things everyone can experience that has nothing to do with gender (feeling emotions, enjoying soft physical touch like cuddling) or could have nothing to do with gender if society loosened up and thought logically for a moment (wearing certain colours).

Like, the bar is just so fucking low tbh.

We have the evidence that allows us to track when pink was for boys, high heels were originally made for men, men used to wear make up with bright frilly clothing and act in certain ways that would have them labelled as effeminate (derogatory) nowadays. Sidenote: Obviously not in every culture, I'm speaking from a white Western experience.

And that's my gripe.

In a misogyny led society, things are deemed feminine as a way to denounce their worth. If women start to do something that men do or previously did and they cannot be forced to stop doing that (because forcing them to stop doing 'man things' is the first go to for misogynists) then either it is abandoned as 'for women' until people forget men were a part of it or it was previously gender neutral, or a special 'feminine' version of it is created to make it acceptable to share (see: trousers).

Men that then try to take part in that thing in some way are bullied for it and either have their gender questioned until dysphoria (because even cis people get gender dysphoria) makes them stop and hide their natural inclinations/likes or they get labelled as some Other in terms of their gender (it wasn't so long ago that being a gay man was seen as basically another gender aside from man or woman) or a term that is more than partially derogatory is created to describe such 'unusual' behaviour from a man (e.g. metrosexual).

When the actual truth is...all humans have emotions. All humans should be able to freely express them. Working together to share chores and earning money and raising children creates better stronger relationships. Physical touch is pleasant, even if sex isn't involved. Colours are just colours, fabrics are just fabrics, nothing about your biology dictates liking certain clothes or media genres or anything like that. Grooming yourself even to a certain extreme is fine, it's okay to want to look good and smell nice. Our body language should not be policed into 'male' and 'female' and neither should our language, knowledge, hobbies and interests.

It's not that 'men are more free when feminine, because femininity is freeing', it's that things we've been taught are 'only for women' or 'inherently feminine' aren't and what men are then officially 'allowed' restricts them tighter and tighter as time goes on.

See for example, the happiness of a trans man or gnc woman/butch lesbian. When masculinity is experienced on purpose in a way that is fully chosen and therefore expressed as desired it creates the same euphoric feelings as those embracing 'feminine' things after being told for years that they can/should not. Because expressing ourselves as we feel most natural is what is actually freeing.

As if such a "keep the straights out policy" could actually be enforceable and encourage queer unity, instead of what it would really do: turn our safe spaces into police states where we have to vet every single person who is willing to stand by us.

He has been exclusively expressing positivity towards transfemmes (and this is the important part) WITHOUT EVER expressing any positivity towards the rest of the trans community. When I initially followed him, I was very happy to see that he openly supports trans women, but over time I became very uncomfortable with the fact that he never once expressed support for trans men, and would actually occasionally post derogatory things about a random trans man with no context. If you had to guess just from his blog (before he started calling trans men rapists), you would have thought he didn't know nonbinary people or transmascs existed. Because he never talked about us, apart from the occasional snappy comment.

He has also been spouting the terrible tme/tma bullshit dichotomy.

Again, the purpose of this post is not to go into depth about all of his behavior or why it's all horrible, that will happen later.

But my point is just to say. His hatred for trans men is just another step on the ladder he has been climbing. And if he finds ways to spew more hatred, and go beyond calling trans men rapists, well, I won't be surprised at that point, either.
