You follow the mocha-colored lines with your eyes.
Straight for 11 inches. Right angle.
Straight for 5 inches. Right angle.
Straight. Right. Straight. Right. The pattern repeats, looping over itself in the plush, cream carpet. It looks soft, and something inside you wants to kick off your shoes and let your feet sink into it.
Your stomach curdles, and a cold feeling drips down your back. It anchors itself deep in your abdomen, and you snap to attention.
There's a dull ache behind your eyes from staring at your monitor. When Farah put you on the front desk today, you practically ran to the chair. It was something different.
But suffocating your thoughts was much harder when your only form of distraction was scrolling through the inventory log. Each and every item is precisely entered and accounted for.
You thump your fingers against your desk, trying to match the rhythm of the numberless wall clock. It's silent otherwise.
There's nothing else out here, the kitchenette and bathroom are both hidden neatly in the stockroom. Farah and Nikto are in there today, sorting, counting, and ordering. Knowing Farah's only company is Nikto, you imagine it can't be any louder than it is out here. Especially since it's not a delivery day. Regardless, they've gotta be doing more than you.
Any upper-floor requests that come through to your screen are forwarded to the internal computer in the stockroom. Besides that, you sit and wait for any internal requests from the Severed floor.
Which hardly ever come.
For the most part, random departments need more generic office supplies, but if you're lucky, it can get exciting when O&D requests raw materials for whatever it is they do, or if Livestock Cultivation needs more feeding bottles or plant seeds. But your shift's almost done, and it's been quiet.
Your eyes drift to the carpet again, tracing over the thick, brown lines.
Maybe when Farah asks you to work the front, you should say no. At least when you're in the stockroom, you can talk about nonsense while physically doing something.
You start counting the rectangles. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Maybe you should be including the smaller rectangles that form from the overlap.... 1. 2. 3. 4.
"'scue me?"
Your head snaps up, and you stay stone-still.
A man's looking at you. A man you've never seen before. Someone new.
You smile at him, straightening in your chair.
"You're not Farah K?" It's a statement, but he says it as a question. His voice is simultaneously gruff and pleasant. You decide immediately you like the sound of it. Someone new. Nikto hardly ever speaks, and you've come to loathe Mr. Graves's voice.
"No, I am not. Farah is in the stockroom. What can I help you with?" you rush out, leaning forward as you do.
"We need more cups for our water dispenser." You nod, scrolling through your digital log until you find the requested item and click the request button.
"What department are you from?" you ask, looking at the tracker.
"MDR."
For a second, you feel as if you're underwater (not that you'd know what that's like), and your heartbeat thumps away. A Macrodata Refiner. You know about them. You've never seen one before, knowledge limited to whispers you've overheard in the hallways.
You stare at the screen, ignoring your achey eyes as you input which department made the request. It'll help your department track how often their cups should be resupplied. Track their water usage.
"The cups will be out shortly," you say in what you hope is a pleasant manner that won't incur his wrath. He nods at you, softly smiling. He has more facial hair than both Nikto and Mr. Graves, and the handful of people you've seen while working here.
Muttonchops, your brain supplies. He has muttonchops.
"MDR also needs a wrist rest, for the keyboard, so I'll be back in a few days for that," he says. He has blue eyes, warmer than Nikto's. They're quite pretty. For someone from MDR. Someone new.
"I can go ahead and order those for you as well." You start to scroll through your log, and frown. Wrist rests aren't in your inventory, which feels odd given the diverse amount of items you supply.
You swallow nervously, eyeing him from behind your screen. He's fairly large, built thick and sturdy. He could easily overpower you if things escalate.
"Actually, we don't have those," you say carefully, monitoring his response. "It might be a Wellness department request." Perhaps the additional information will make him merciful and willing to spare you. He grimaces; you tense.
"I guess that makes sense."
Oh. His eyes go blank for a second as his mind drifts away. Even if it makes sense, you know he's disappointed. The feeling sits in your stomach, and your leg bounces nervously.
"But I can get them for you," you blurt out, heart speed picking up again. Someone new. You're not sure if you can, but you're pretty sure you could make a convincing argument to Farah, but there's always a chance Mr. Graves will deny it.
The man's eyes flick back to you, observing.
"Or I can at least try," you saw weakly, slightly embarrassed by your need to please. Your behavior would not be considered handbook-compliant. But there's a glimmer of approval in the man's eyes, and he nods curtly.
"What's your name?" You ask, trying to keep your eyes glued to the computer instead of the handsome man who seems to be absent of the discomfort that plagues you.
"John P." You make a notation in your log. Someone new. John. You smile up at him again, sinking back into the safety and comfort of the company-approved script.
"Someone should be out with the requested cups shortly."
The blank, white door behind you opens, as if on command, and Nikto walks out. He grunts as he deposits the sleeve of cups onto your desk, before disappearing through the unmarked door without a word.
One of John's eyebrows lifts, and part of you feels a little embarrassed.
"That's Nikto. He's not particularly chatty." You smile at him apologetically. The last thing you need is for him to gather up the rest of MDR and take revenge on your department for a perceived slight.
"Are you? Chatty, that is?" John asks. You pause, a need to take stock of the situation coming over you. He's smiling kindly, making no effort to reach for the sleeve of cups, content to be here in this empty room with you. Maybe he's excited to meet someone new also.
The way your nerves settle almost instantaneously is comical. You lean back in your chair, looking up at him, and you're really looking at him now, no longer afraid of the hefty title of MDR.
"You know, I'm known to be a bit of a yapper," you admit. "Pretty sure that Nikto needed a break so they stuck me up here." He snorts at that, shoving his hands into his pockets.
"Well, better you than him out here," he says, eyes roaming your face. "Better manners. Much prettier."
You freeze, words stuck in your mouth like a jammed printer. No one's ever called you pretty before. You're a little alarmed at the heat that washes over you, wondering if it's a normal reaction to being called pretty or one that occurs because John is the one saying it.
"Thank you," you whisper. You rise out of your chair, passing him the sleeve.
"No, thank you," he says, eyes sparking with something you can't fully recognize. His fingers brush against yours for the briefest moment, and the cold feeling from earlier creeps down your back, despite the slight warmth at the contact.
You pull your hand back.
"Someone will let you know about the wrist rests," you say gently, steering this interaction back on script. He doesn't say anything, just smiles at you softly.
You just stare back, quiet, nails digging into the skin of your clenched fist. John nods before beginning to walk away. He makes it to the door leading to the hallway before he stops, hands gripping the cup sleeve a little too tightly.
"What's your name?" he asks. You answer. First and initial. He repeats it back to you, lips quirking up slightly. And then he's gone.
You sit back down, the silence washing over you uncomfortably. It's stifling. Your fingers begin to tap again, and you trace your eyes over the rectangles.

PLATONIC YANDERE MANAGER KIM X READER (MANAGER KIM)

Manager Kim as a dad would be insanely protective of you and a literal definition of a helicopter parent and rightfully so considering all that he's been through in his life with crackheaded mafia bosses and North and South Korean gangsters chase after him and the military and whatnot. Needless to say, he's lived a really rough life and he'll be damned if he let anything happen to you and Minji because of his past. He'll do his best to shield you from the horrors of his past and make sure you only have happy memories and things to think about
He's a bit sad that Minji seems to dislike him but takes comfort and solace in the fact that you like him. You cannot have friends till he runs a full background check on them and after rounds and rounds of interrogation to find out their intentions with you, only then will he allow you to hang out with him, of course, you'll have to call him every 10 minutes and he'll know about your location anyway because of the GPS tracker he's installed on your phone. Plus, you have your older sister Minji looking out for you too so everything will be fine
Everything else is secondary, you're important to him, more than you know and can imagine. He would literally murder and kill anyone who dares to have the thought of harming you and Minji. In fact he has. A few weeks ago a new bookstore opened up near your house and you were pretty excited to check it out since you had a fondness for books. He allowed you to explore it only if Minji could accompany you as well, which she would have done in the first place, she's equally overprotective of you as well with the overwhelming and constant urge to protect her younger sibling from danger and guide them in the time of their need
The bookstore was a quaint little place and you loved the cozy aura and warmth it radiated. While you were busy checking the books out, a few men who appeared to be members of the Yakuza entered the store. Minji instinctively rushed in front of you and threatened them to leave as they simply sneered at her. One of them leered at you with a wide grin on his face as he spoke "Boss will be happy to have a cutie like you in bed with him... or if he doesn't want you, don't worry, I'll take care of you and show you a good time... we can share among my pals too if you want~" Minji got livid at the garbage they spewed as you felt disgusted and slightly scared about what these men might do to you. You didn't have fighting lessons as a kid and you definitely didn't know how to fight a full grown man from the Yakuza
A few seconds later, you heard a few men groaning in agony as you noticed two people move with lightning speed, disarming the men and tactically fighting them. You took a closer look and couldn't believe your eyes when you saw your dad and his friend, Hansu Seong just dodging their punches with ease and delivering punches and kicks like it was nothing. Your dad had a chain with him as he wrapped it around the neck of someone and chocked him with it till he passed out cold. You stared in admiration as Hansu leaped at a great height and kicked his opponents, rendering them with agony and brutal pain
After they ensured you were all right, Manager Kim got you out of that damned bookstore immediately. It turned out they belonged to one of the most prominent yakuza gangs of the country and were sent since your dad had a tiff with their boss. After this incident, you weren't allowed to go anywhere without him or Hansu anymore. He kept a strict eye and monitored your electronic usage as well, limiting you to only an hour on your phone or laptop while he's in the same room with you. There are reports of hackers installing malware into computer systems, he just wants to keep you safe from harm
You'll soon grow weary and fed up with this lifestyle of not being able to do your own thing anymore. You can reason, argue or even cry for that matter with your dad but he won't budge from his decision. As much as it pains him when you're upset, he can't risk your safety. Your safety is more important to him than anything else. It's not like you can exactly ask your dear older sister Minji for help anyway, she'll know what you're planning and instantly report it to her dad and the two of them will shut down whatever idea was forming in that head of yours without even getting to execute it. If you have a diary you can bet your allowance she WILL read it, every page and every word
It's not like she wants to invade your privacy or anything, she just wants to know more about you and keep a protective watchful eye over you like any good older sibling does. If you have a crush or someone broke your heart, she'll inform your dad about it immediately and before you know it that particular family will leave the country as soon as possible. Your dad and your sister like spoiling you with whatever you ask for, anything you ask, you receive except for your freedom of course
You can't really go ask Hansu or Jincheol for help either, Jincheol will just egg Manager Kim on with how risky things are outside for a young little thing like yourself and you need protection. You can't trust Taehun and Dabin either, they'll snitch on you anyway to their dads and their dads will inform yours and before you know it, you'll have a whole squad looking for you if you ever thought about running away or escaping. Surprisingly not even Taehun will assist you in running away, he'll just swat you on the head and tell you to forget the idea and go back to your dad. You clearly aren't meant to be alone in a cruel world
I guarantee you, it won't even be 5 minutes before your dad finds you and will just carry you like a sack of flour with a stoic expression. However his heart is bleeding with pain and regret, not because of his parenting but because you felt the need to run away since you obviously thought he wasn't showering you with more attention. "I recommend some nice hot dinner and a good night's sleep to forget about the night you've had... it's dangerous what you've done" said Hansu, his voice a bit stern as he adjusted his glasses. "As much as I'm all for having fun, you did give your old man a damn heart attack running away like that, don't do that kid..." said Jincheol as you were carried back home. You sighed in defeat and realized dejectedly that there really was no way out for you. Might as well just give up. No one would help you anyway, not even the police officers who know all too well about your dad's records with the government. No one wants to mess with an ex war veteran after all, not unless they have a death wish...

Nice.
[ID: The score tracker of Endeavor OTC, a phone app designed to help treat ADHD. It is headed "Your Focus Score" and shows that between January 21st and January 26th, the day I'm posting, my score rose from 67 to 69, putting me in the top 10%, though 10% of what is not entirely clear.]
In addition to being funny, this is my highest score in Endeavor, a little infinite-runner style game where you navigate a track in a spaceship while shooting creatures that fly at you. (If you're curious, I have a tag about it here.) It's meant to help people with ADHD develop focus and while I haven't had astronomical results, I have seen improvements, so I've kept at it -- six weeks on, two weeks off.
This is my third "course" and it's consolation that I'm slowly moving upwards; my first course I went from my baseline of 36 to 62 very quickly, but my second course I just sat at 62 the entire six weeks, which was disheartening. Interestingly, I started improving again when I started listening to a podcast while playing.
The game has sound that can't be turned off unless you mute the phone, so you can't play anything else while the game is active. Without something to listen to while playing, I was getting frustrated with the game and not doing my best, so I started finding random episodes of podcasts I like on youtube and putting them on the computer nearby. It certainly has helped settle my mood.
I'm now part of a study Endeavor is running on app usage, focus, and attention, and I'm kind of hoping I'm not sabotaging something by listening to podcasts while I play, but I guess I'll find out eventually.

I'm going to do a good things post earlier than usual, because I'm feeling kinda funky. I have a lot of feelings, and that's ok, I'm just trying to regulate them so they don't consume me. And isn't that the hardest part?
But anyway, good things:
My date went really well! They are really nice and I think we vibed. We even exchanged numbers, so good bye to Hinge messaging.
I got out for a good walk just now.
I went to Walmart finally and will be replacing my terrible coffee pot that is rusting (the hot plate part). Yes, it's that old.
I got many more hugs than an average day today, which is a very good thing for me, who loves pressure.
I figured out my computer usage tracker, so now I will have... data!
I am actually not having issues with decreasing my med that I was working on doing that for. I'm very grateful for this.
What I am looking forward to:
I am going to camp tomorrow! Just for a few hours. I'm training one of my favorite topics, and it's a really interactive training, which I also revamped.
My friend's wedding is tomorrow. I'm nervous, but I think it will be good.
I'm feeling a little iffy and nervous about camping, but overall I'm excited to get out of town and into the mountains.
I have Monday off (I have a ton of PTO and didn't want to work after camping), so I'm looking forward to that.
Also on Monday, I'm finally going back to the dentist to solve the weeks of tooth pain. Yay me.
Overall, I am trying to be grateful and happy. Anxiety is a lifelong challenge, but it's getting more manageable as things settle down with the meds.

All you need to do is pick a tier based on your budget! You can see the total cost by hovering over the tier name or all the way over on the right, and all the parts within a tier are picked out to be compatible with each other and work well. Hovering over a tier also gets you a nifty little summary of how the build stacks up for different types of workloads (office work, gaming, streaming, etc.)
Each tier has a few different alternatives for each part, and you can mouse over them for a picture and a brief description that gives you an overview of what that parts capabilities are so you can better understand if it meets your needs, or if you want to go with a better option.
Scrolling down past the table of build tiers there are expandable boxes for each type of part that gives you a description of what that part actually is and does, some tips for shopping for that part, and more detailed information if you're curious!
If you've picked out some parts but are curious what other options might be out there, want to do some price comparison, run the list by a more computer-y friend, etc. then PC Part Picker is another great resource!

You can click on any component category to select a part, then it does the comparison shopping between the different available merchants for that part (that it is aware of), keeps track of total power usage, has some built-in checks for compatibility between parts, etc. If you click on any particular part, it also gives you a price history chart at the different tracked merchants, so you can figure out if you're getting a fair price. If you end up wanting to swap a part out, by default it filters for only parts compatible with the rest of your build, so you can look through the options without worrying too much about that!
