Rove eating fish One day I was at the Cliff base camp, found Rove casually sat near the fire, cooking his fish. It was so cute

Differences in localization and the original pt. 1
I am starting a series of posts with the goal of familiarizing players with some of the differences that localization creates for us in contrast to the original.
Some moments are radically different, misleading and causing controversy, while some do not change the essence of what is happening, but are still noticeably different
Disclaimer: these posts will be written solely for the purpose of familiarization; I do not force anyone to play the game in Japanese, because you are free to choose the version of the game that is comfortable for you. I just noticed some moments and want to share them with you.
The localization of Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney) is essentially good, but there are some moments, IMHO, that I personally would not adapt or change in any way
One of the most serious changes, which, in my opinion, should not have been touched at all, is Mitsurugi's (Edgeworth) phobias.
As if case 1-4 never happened.
In the Japanese version, when examining the files in Mitsurugi's office, Naruhodō will be perplexed about the need for such high shelves - they could collapse during an earthquake.
Tumblr media
Okashī na. Aitsu, jishin ga nigatena hazudakara……
...That's strange. He's supposed to be bad with earthquakes...
demo sa. Jishin ga okottara, heya-chū ni fairu no amegafuru ne.
But if an earthquake happens, files will rain down all over the room.
In the localization (for some reason) at this point Mitsurugi was given a fear of heights. For what reason... I don't understand
Tumblr media
___________________________________________
Next, another big difference is Naruhodo's food preferences
In the Japanese version, Tomi the clown offers him miso ramen (which is cooked in chicken broth and miso), which Naruhodo refuses and says that he prefers tonkotsu ramen (cooked in pork broth and boiled pork is added to it).
Tumblr media
hora. hora. Kuu? Miso rāmen.
Look. Look. Want some miso ramen?
ainiku boku wa tonkotsu-hana ndesu.
Unfortunately, I prefer tonkotsu (ramen).
That is, Naruhodo literally says that he would prefer pork, not chicken.
What about the localization? It's the other way around.
The clown offers him a burger (the patties for which are usually made from beef and pork), but he says that he would rather choose a chicken sandwich.
Why?
Tumblr media
___________________________________________
Vending machine in 1-3
I have no complaints about its contents (it is adapted), but here another preference of Naruhodo is lost
Tumblr media
“お茶”“みそ汁”“おしるこ” “くず湯”“おでん”・・・・
“ocha” “misoshiru” “o shiruko” “kuzu yu” “oden”
"Tea" "Miso soup" "Oshiruko" "Kudzu soup" "Oden" ...
The lineup is unified in Japanese style.
“ウーロン茶”すらないぞ。
“ūron cha” sura nai zo.
There's not even "oolong tea."
In the Japanese version, reading the menu of the vending machine, Naruhodo annoyedly comments that "there is not even oolong tea". He literally names the tea he likes!
In the localization, he is disappointed that the food in the vending machine is too... ordinary, and he was expecting something that is not usually sold there (popcorn).
Tumblr media
___________________________________________
Naruhodō University
Case 3-1 is very rich in information about the young Naruhodō, including the name of the university he attended
In the Japanese version, it is Yumei University (the same university where his ancestor Ryunosuke Naruhodō studied during the Meiji era - then it was called Yumei Imperial University), which creates an important reference to Dai Gyakuten Saiban (The Great Ace Attorney)
Tumblr media
watashi no iraijin. Yūmei daigaku no geijutsu gakubu 3-kaisei de, kaze o hīte iru.
My client. A third-year student in the art department at Yumei University, suffering from a cold.
Tumblr media
In the localization, he studies at Ivy University, as if referring to the famous Ivy League (elite universities).
A very good decision that shows Naruhodō's abilities and the high quality of his education (my clever boy)
___________________________________________
Interesting addition
And the last one for today, a conversation with Mask in the detention center
When Yusaku (Ron) tells the story of the allegedly lost vase, Naruhodō makes a comment about the absurdity of his story
Tumblr media
(... I guess the story is a bit vague...)
The localization decided to make a reference to Naruhodō's education in the field of art, and he compares Mask's story to the surreal paintings of Dali.
Tumblr media
A nice addition, but still different from the original version.
___________________________________________
In total, in my opinion, 3 unsuccessful changes out of 5.
If you also noticed any differences - feel free to tell us about them. Let's educate ourselves together.
It will be a bit more difficult with the subsequent parts, because I can't buy the Japanese version of TGAA (it is only available to a certain list of countries), and I don't have the new Apollo trilogy and the Investigations duology to check every little thing (and I don't have an extra $80), and those who record the walkthrough do not always check every clue, where the contradictions lie.

wait I haven’t played pikmin in a while is Louie the one who’s a menace to society and eats everything 💔
It seems like fanon Louie is quite mischaracterized, his character is usually summed up to “evil glutton”, so here i will do my best to talk about why louie is NOT a bad person nor a menace! now for the first part yes, he is DEFINITELY a glutton lol. even in his official description, “無口な新米ドライバー ルーイ 出身星 ホコタテ星 無口で何を考えているかわからない、ホコタテ運送の新入社員。トラブルメーカーを体現する人物で、本能のままに行動する超ド級の食いしん坊。 関係者 田舎のババ 趣味 料理 夢 自由に暮らすこと” (translation notes:"a new quiet driver Louie Planet of origin-hocotate A new employee of Hocotate freight, he's quiet so it's hard to tell what he is thinking. The embodiment of a troublemaker. Huge glutton who acts on instinct. Relatives: nana from the countryside Hobbies: cooking Dreams: Living as he wishes)
In the official Pikmin personality test, if you get louie, you will receive this text: ルーイです。 ちょっとコミュニケーションが苦手。なにを考えているかわからない、と他人から誤解されがち。 自分の気持ちはもっと言葉にしたほうがいいかも?” translation: "your personality is,, louie. You're not very good at communicating. Others don't know what you're thinking and tend to misunderstand you. Maybe you should put your feelings into words more often?" misunderstood is exactly what he is ! and because he is so quiet, his actions repeatedly are mistaken for illintent. lets take a look at some of the testimonies given in Louies report from the nintendo website.
Tumblr media
“moss’s testimony?” here louie says: Since she was alone, i took her in. I gave her food and she became attached to me” Doesnt sound so greedy does it?
Now for the fact that he stole juice from the koppaites, i rebute by saying Louie had no idea that this juice was meant to be the supply which would regenerate an entire planets food. Sure, he was an asshole for stealing the food, but he did not know he was dooming an entire planet, stating that would be a huge overstatement of his initial action. I present Case 3!
Tumblr media
Translation: Steal food and escape!? It seems he had stolen food from the Koppaites ship without permission. He intended to give it to Olimar who had been captured by the plasm wraith though…”
Greedy,, He got it for Olimar because Olimar was captured! how can you say he is evil after that!
Next, lets take a look at nelles testimony: @pyrolysis111 hi, ur wife mentioned
Tumblr media
Translation: I thanked him profusely afterwards, I'm not sure if he regretted his actions or not though..
Nelle thanks him here, because even though he had taken her, he was taking good care of her! Now there's an entire theory about Louie trying to mimic Olimar, who had told him that a leafling state is the safest state to be in on this planet, and took it literally. This is a theory I believe, and I'm pretty sure he wanted them as leaflings to also help him get food (lol), but that would mean he was trying to keep them alive, so that counts for something! and yes, he is a trouble maker. He caused a whole debt because of his inability to control his hunger after all. However, there is no ill intent. the first thing i'll tackle is a popular theory between some fans that say that Louie does not care for Olimar because of Pikmin 2’s ending. Here, i will pull a super cute log from 2009!
"Sometimes I wonder what it's all good for. I mean, Olimar is a nice enough fellow and all, but he just loves being in charge. I take this in my stride since our mission on the planet of the Pikmin is introducing me to so many wondrous creatures, from the super scary to the downright yummy! There is no way that Olimar could handle the job by himself and I reckon we actually make a pretty good team. Let's face it, there's no such thing as a proper partnership, I've done a bit of research into them lately, so I should know."
"Olimar and me, we're just good looking rebels thrown together to save the world... from a crippling debt brought about entirely by factors beyond my control. But, we've already got the thing that makes all of these duos special: we're great friends, and Olimar at least understands what's going on when he's told to 'press A', whatever that is. Maybe I'll ask Olimar about getting matching facial hair though."
I just don't see how people get the idea that Louie dislikes Olimar. he openly sees him as a friend. Lastly.. Just look how cute he is!

Kofuku: known as Kofu, Kofu-chan, rarely Kofutan, Kofutaro,or Kofuku-san, and the alias is the black menace
He was adopted from the animal shelter when he was around 2months and a half. Although it was said he might not live so long because he had the anal prolapse, now he has no problems and has gotten so big.
He had a violent childhood attacking Mr.J every day, but his nature is only a home tiger so he can't greet with not only her guests but grandpa yet.
He hates being hugged, runs away when she calls him, and falls on the floor with the face that doesn't know what he's thinking these days, so it's still impossible for landlady to communicate with him. She can feel his affection only by his staying beside service with sharing her pillow when she wakes up.
He loves rice SO much and eats cooked rice or prepared mochi rice. And he always goes his way physically, then broke a lot of things at home so he let her spend quite an extra money...

Already during the V century it was already quite popular, it has been eaten in different ways, it comes from buckwheat, it was eaten as it is or mixed with water and then cooked, it is most likely that it was introduced by China through Korea. What was the popular dish of the 5th century called? soba-gaki and to drink soba-yu (this was more popular in the Edo period for illnesses). Buckwheat was made like meatballs that are later eaten boiled. Possible food for the rich? Soba as we know it dates from the Edo period to the present day 16th century, approximately 1574. Combination with temperature? It became popular around the same time mentioned above, soba has vitamin B1. Did they cook this dish or its history? A bold sign that I found striking and compelling! And not just because it's ramen.
背 means back (the body part) or stature/height. It can also mean background, behind, or to disobey or defy (turn your back on).
脂 means fat (as a noun), lard, grease, tallow, etc. It's read あぶら or シ. The 月 meat-moon radical (shared by 背) tells you that it's a body part, and 旨 provides the reading シ.
Put them together and you get 背脂 [せあぶら] meaning back fat, or the fatty part of roast pork. Good to remember because some ramen restaurants will ask you how much fat you want in the broth.
煮 means to boil, simmer, or cook. It's read に. We've mostly covered 灬 as animal pawprints, but here's a reminder that it's actually a fire radical! And the top radical 者 means person.
干 means to dry, parch, ebb, recede, or intercede or interfere. It's read ほ. る, or カン.
Put them together and you get 煮干し [にぼし], meaning small fish (usually sardines) that have been boiled and dried. They're a common component in ramen broth; they add a lot of umami and not as much fishiness as you think (though they make the restaurant stink).

also these are just little things I noticed, some about the japanese but a great many more general things as well - not a thorough analysis by any means!
act 1 (disc 1)
囚人の歌 (lit. the convict's song) - the chain gang
I am not sure what I was expecting but this seems to be a pretty straightforward translation?
24601 has become 24653, I assume for rhyming and syllabic purposes - "san" (3) rhymes better with valjean than "ichi" (1) and 0 has two syllables? (although "roku" is also two syllables and they kept that so I'm not sure)
anyways I'm sure victor hugo is heartbroken that the japanese people don't know the date of his conception
仮釈放 - on parole
I really like his voice here
also he is played by sakae takita who was 36 when he first played valjean and is ~44 at the time of this recording (1994) - in his bio, he mentions that he likes to cook and is very proud of his homemade miso soup
司教 - the bishop
I fear I was not expecting the screaming (scared me for a moment sorry)
this is a very beautiful scene and I really like it; however the bishop's vibrato combined with the fact that it's in japanese made is a bit incomprehensible to me :((
it is very hard to put a lot of words into a short number of beats in japanese so I am impressed at what they have achieved here
that being said I do prefer the english version...
一日の終わりに - at the end of the day
first let me just say I absolutely love the orchestration in this piece - it hits every single time
this is a good lyric: "この荒波が / お前らを / 押し流す / 巻き起きる波 / 借金の嵐さ / ああ それで / 一日が終わりなのさ" (these rough waves wash you away, rising waves, a storm of debt, and that's how the day ends)
this as well: "金がなければ / ゴミ屑とおんなじさ" (if you have no money you're no different from trash) - it's so harsh and despairing
poor fantine...this scene is tragic no matter the language
since this is a live recording, you can hear some of the movement on stage and various reactions to the lines that I don't think I've noticed in other recordings? it makes it sadder nontheless
夢やぶれて (lit. a dream torn) - I dreamed a dream
her voice here is gorgeous - fantine is played by hiromi itoh in this recording (I did a quick google search but couldn't find much on her except that she originated the role of aysha in children of eden on the west end)
the part where the sailors and the ladies are singing in counterpoint is surprisingly light in tone? I don't think I remember any english recordings like this but I may be mistaken
oh she's coughing :((((
i am a big fan of this valjean and javert (javert is played by kiyotaka imai, who has also been in evita and phantom)
javert switches to fairly formal japanese whenever he addresses madeleine which is a nice detail
the creaking sound effects for the cart really add to the experience
i love this chapter in the brick and hearing it in the musical is pretty cool
裁き (lit. judgement) - who am I - the trial
valjean uses the first-person pronoun "ore" which is considered more masculine than other alternatives (ex: "boku")
people are screaming at the end as he reveals himself (?) I have never seen the musical so I'm not sure if this is a notable detail
this song makes me cry every time
this is nice: "ときが少しずつ流れてゆくわ" - time flows little by little
対決 - the confrontation
javert calls himself and valjean "うじ虫" - maggots
he is no longer using formal language - it's back to the more informal/disrespectful (?) language from the first song
幼いコゼット (lit. young/little cosette) - castle on a cloud
she says "友だちもいるわ" (there are friends [in the castle]) which is absolutely heartbreaking; she's so lonely :(
この家の主 - master of the house
for some reason the harmony is coming out more than the melody? very interesting
i remember seeing somewhere (maybe in the arai manga??) where mme. thenardier mocks thenardier calling himself a "哲学者" (tetsugakusha - philosopher) by calling him a "ケツ学者" (ketsugakusha - made up word that either calls him an "ass scholar" or perhaps a phony)... anyways, I was hoping I'd hear that here but it didn't happen :(
I have to take a break but I'll be back with more from the rest of disc 1 and hopefully disc 2 as well!
