You didn’t mean to spiral. It was just one of those moments. Bored, scrolling, waiting for your laundry to finish, and suddenly your thumb paused on something that made your stomach twist.

Three liked photos in a row. Same girl. Same feed. Bikinis, mini skirts, barely-there dresses and perfect skin and abs and legs and the kind of jawline that made you want to bury yourself under a blanket.

You clicked the username. Her profile was public. Everything about her screamed confident. Hot. Untouchable. And Charles had liked all of them. You didn’t say anything. You just… went quiet.

He noticed immediately. By the time he got home that evening, you were curled up in the corner of the couch instead of waiting for him at the door like you usually did. Hair up. Hoodie on. Pretending to be busy on your phone. He dropped his keys and frowned. “Everything okay?”

You nodded. “Yeah.”

“You sure?”

“Mhmm.”

He tilted his head. “Why won’t you look at me?”

You looked at him. Then looked away. Shit. He crossed the room, crouching in front of you with one hand resting lightly on your knee. “Amour. What happened?”

You shook your head. “Nothing. I’m just tired.”

“Try again.”

You sighed. “It’s stupid.”

“I don’t care. I want to hear it.”

You hesitated. Then, in a voice small enough to make your own eyes sting, you said, “She’s really pretty.”

He blinked. “Who?”

You didn’t answer.

He sat back on his heels. “Wait-”

“I saw your likes,” you whispered. “On Instagram.”

His mouth opened. Closed.

You kept going. “And I know I’m not supposed to care. I know it doesn’t mean anything. But she’s like… hot. And confident. And I just started wondering if maybe you liked that more than-”

He cut you off with a hand to your cheek. “Stop.”

You flushed. “Charles-”

“Mon ange. No.”

His thumb brushed over your cheekbone. “You think I don’t notice the way you make people stare when we walk into a room? You think I haven’t seen the way drivers fumble over their words trying to talk to you?”

You blinked. “That’s not-”

He shook his head. “You’re the hottest woman I’ve ever seen. Full stop. With your hoodie on. With mascara smudged under your eyes. With cereal in your hair at eight in the morning. All of it.”

You stared at him.

He smiled softly. “Besides… that’s my cousin.”

You froze. “What?”

He laughed. “The girl. The bikini girl. That’s my cousin Eloïse. She’s a model in Nice. My whole family likes her pictures. You can ask my mum.”

Your mouth opened. “You’re joking.”

“Not even a little bit.”

“Oh my god.”

You dropped your head into your hands and groaned. He leaned forward and wrapped his arms around you, pulling you into his lap with ease. “See what happens when you assume?”

“You should’ve warned me!”

“I didn’t think I needed to preface every Instagram like with a family tree.”

You smacked his shoulder. “I hate you.”

He kissed your temple. “You love me.”

“I’m embarrassed.”

“You’re perfect.”

You curled into his chest with a breathy laugh. “Still not as hot as Eloïse.”

He kissed your hair. “You’re hotter. Don’t tell her I said that.”

You giggled. He kissed you again. And just like that, the spiral was over.
