fool’s fate is such an immensely long and wild ride, it’s no wonder reviews are like “this is some of the most gutwrenching-doomed-by-the-narrative shit you’ll ever experience.” i feel like i’ve aged like five years since i first picked up fool’s errand. i mean so much happened, like, too much happened? how does one even go back to seeing fitz and the fool as friends? friends seems like a reductive word for the sheer intensity of what they’ve been through together, for one another. i won’t make assumptions about what i think hobb’s intent was (the intent of the creator of a piece of media is rarely as important as the audience’s interpretation of it). HAVING SAID THAT, i for one think it’s very telling (for a queer narrative) that fitz has always “compartmentalised” the fool as someone separate from everyone else that’s important to him. his dearest friend and yet the extent of his relationship with him is a secret kept close to his chest throughout the books, with chade probably being the only one with even half a true inkling about their connection, almost like he’s subconsciously protecting it. he leaves all the ‘intimate details’ out when reporting to the coterie, but this isn’t the first time he’s avoided speaking of things they have expressed to one another in confidence. he’s different around the fool, and holds little back from him save for his avoidance of the depth of his own feelings. i mean, you don’t risk your own death to breathe life back into someone’s broken & bleeding & decaying body because you’re okay with the idea of them no longer being a part of your life. this is doubly tragic because the fool loves and respects fitz’s boundaries so much that he would rather withdraw than risk ‘making a mistake’, (and it’s obvious he’s trying so hard not to be selfish, trying so hard not to be heartbroken that fitz didn’t come back, especially after fitz astounds him by asking to follow him) but i am truly convinced that if the fool had chosen differently, fitz would’ve slowly started to come to terms instead of reverting to dismissal and avoidance. but he more or less acknowledges it in the parting words of his epilogue, that he traded everything he had with the fool for the life he sought with molly as a boy because ‘a horse can’t wear two saddles.’ and the most important woman in his life will go years without knowing about the depth of fitz and the fool’s friendship, but her children will play with the toys he carved for them, and a prized horse named malta will graze in their stables, and her son will wear an earring the fool had in his safekeeping for years and only parted with in order to keep a promise to a boy they both loved from forever ago. and so fitz goes from being adamant that he’d find a way to change the fool’s mind to letting him go just like that, because he finally has his life back, after so many years of deprivation. it’s only it’s own kind of tragedy that while he is content and surrounded by the people he loves, he’s still avoiding the deeper issues at the core of his being; still in many ways a tool for the throne, and giving his daughter up to the same fate. meanwhile, the fool, who was instrumental in buckkeep achieving peace and the reversal of fitz’s partial forging, is just hanging on by the bare thread of knowing that fitz is finally ‘free’ of him, and living well

the fact that most people are willingly misunderstanding babe's joke at the beginning of e2 is killing me. he's OBVIOUSLY joking. whether it's a good joke or not is another discussion, but do you honestly think that babe would choose willy- arrogant, pushy, entitled willy, over charlie- sweet, kind, loving charlie?? do you know anything about babe at all?? did you watch s1 with your eyes closed?? he obviously loves charlie. he would kill for charlie. he looks at charlie with so much love in his eyes, he walks onto the track holding charlie's hand, he gets so fucking pissed when willy brings up his boyfriend. how can anyone watch the show and think babe is anything other than madly in love??

Okay but Gotham v the Lazarus Pits eldritch influence really having to fight it out when Damian is born. Cuz the pits and associated forces have long claimed the al Ghul side of the family, but Gotham has a long standing claim on the Waynes (and Kanes, which Damian is also a descendant of through Bruce thanks to Martha)

Do you think Damian ever felt called to Gotham even beyond wanting to meet his father or siblings? And do you think he ever feels pulled back to the League's territory once he's in Gotham?

Also, do you think Gotham had some influence in the others not wanting to send him back beyond their distrust of the al Ghuls?

I think being owned thoroughly or half and half by more than one Eldritch entity would drive most people insane. Like legitimately insane. Poor Damian -- if they're warring over him, he must be torn in two impossible directions. And vulnerable to the issues from both, like we discussed with Bruce feeling when Gotham fights with Blud and vice versa. So Damian gets along with no one, because Gotham and whatever rules Damian through the Al Ghuls are constantly at war with each other, and he is therefore at war with himself. Even Jason who gets dunked in the Lazarus Pits still has Gotham as the ultimate Eldritch in his soul.

What would also be interesting is if Ra's or Talia don't enjoy Gotham, fear Gotham, distrust the role it has in Bruce's life, etc. Maybe they tried to beat it out of him in training, maybe they thought it didn't have as much of a connection with him. And then Damian was born, and Bruce had already taken his place at the center of his city, and their child looked like him -- body and soul. Undeniably Gotham, even only half.

Why do we enjoy and gravitate towards certain shows?

Is it the writing? The cinematography? The acting? The soundtrack? A character that resonates? Some other nebulous factor?

(Like a giant plushie!)

Is it easier to connect when there's external or internal conflict? This is the question I've pondered a lot this week.

It's definitely going to vary by person.

For myself, I often have criticisms of shows. A huge part of my job is ripping apart the writing and videos of others, and others rip apart my work as well. I notice things...a lot. It's why I dread finales. A ton of crimes happen in finales. But I can GREATLY enjoy a show while having strong criticisms.

Call it hypocritical if you want, but I watch based on vibes. If I'm enjoying my time, that's what matters to me. I'm typically going to focus on the things that bring me joy.

Maybe there's a character (often the unhinged, sassy or sunshine ones) that I'm finding particularly delightful.

Or maybe a show has me yelling at my tv screen, throwing pillows, and wishing all kinds of misfortunes for a particular character instead.

Or maybe I want to give the character (and myself) a pep talk.

And I always LOVE it when a show tickles my brain and I can learn something new. (Old screenshot here)

Or when I can go on a scavenger hunt for symbolism.

I'm also beginning to think that I'm more of an internal conflict person, but I'm still mulling that over.

The Things I Noticed This Week:

The deluge of content has continued so this certainly doesn't represent everything I watched 😅. I probably should've watched less and slept more, but where's the fun in that?

Fabulous Fit

I love sweaters. That's an understatement. So it should be no surprise that I loved both the sweaters in Fight for You and Moon & Dust. The one in Fight for You just had a fun element with it's color and style, and the one in Moon & Dust was just stylish and a turtleneck. I'd wear them both.

And... the other side of me was very enamored with all of the white outfits this week. I might not wear them, but I certainly loved looking at them.

Fascinating Find

Sweetheart Service sent me down a rabbit hole to see what all would be involved if he wanted to program Sebastian (the robot vacuum cleaner) to talk. It's doable.

And Kim feeding Kenta in Pit Babe 2 sent me searching for more details about that particular dish to see if I could make it at home. I can't really imagine someone feeding me like that, but it looks so yummy. I found a couple recipes I'll add to my "to try" list.

There was a lot of beautiful framing in The Next Prince and Reset, but the eyes got me this week. So much can be conveyed through how a person looks at someone else.

*As always seems to be the case with Knock Out, it's really the scene rather than a particular frame. But their eyes were speaking during this scene. Poor Thun fighting for his life while Keen made sure he was going to get what he wanted.

Fun Flourish

Sound reigned supreme in this category this week. I already talked about the music in The Next Prince and shared a fun fmv for Knock Out.

But I also added a new song to my playlist thanks to My Sweet Brother-in-Law.

I might have been too entranced by the music to focus much on the shower scene 😅. But it was also a pretty sweet sequence for this couple, and we got a good look at our red flag's butterfly tattoo.

This line had me dying. Our boy Armin has no chill, and I'm here for it. It was a delightfully unexpected surprise.

I also enjoyed the following conversation.

Even if I think characters should NEVER joke about getting hit by a car. There's too much precedent in dramaland.

But it's truth. My brother got hit by a car while INSIDE a building (he's okay). Point is - let's enjoy life and the shows that bring us joy.

I'm not even trying to figure this out for this week. I'll watch a lot, and my attention is ping ponging between shows (both old and new) like this is an Olympic level match these days. I'm very much looking forward to seeing Sorn cry.

Why do you think did Curly let Jimmy go before the crash? I've seen the theory Curly briefly thought about crashing too but didn't expect Jimmy to go through with it

I generally believe it was shock and a bit of denial.

It’s the sort of thing where Curly knew Jimmy enough to know he blows up at things but he never would’ve expected him to go through with something so crazy. He gives Jimmy way too much benefit. It’s just his nature and the dynamics he has with Jimmy. They have a stable relationship as friends but it’s stabilized by the unhealthy toxic aspects that keep him in it. He’s like this with Anya, taking the gun is something he really shouldn’t have kept off the record, so is Swansea’s feigned hostility toward Daisuke. He doesn’t want to get people in trouble and doesn’t want to believe anyone would cause trouble other than to themselves. He’s a very lenient man.

I think the words were hollow in his head. Said but not really meant like all the times Jimmy lashes out and says something cruel to him or others. He never means it, if he did why would he still be Curly’s friend? Curly’s head wasn’t in the right space in that moment, he just got through panicking with Anya and if the sound design is anything to go by, was panicked and preoccupied going to confront Jimmy. I mean, the flash of the warning signs before he runs back are identical to the dissociative episode of sort he has when going to talk to Jimmy to do his Psyc eval.

There is this sort of assumption in fanon that Curly was the idealic person for the job and simply failed. None of them were the idealic people to be there, it’s Curly’s entire concern with the ladder he chose. I see more interpretations of him being purposefully ignorant where I see him as just always looking the wrong way or not in a place where he can see it. There’s something different about seeing something than being told about it in the human mind. It may just be the psych student in me but Curly def has some sort of cognitive dissonance just like Jimmy but when it comes to his role as a Captain vs who he is.

They blur in his head to where if you ask him if he was acting as a Captain or a friend or himself to his crew he couldn’t answer. Not with confidence even if he did. There are many times we see that Curly himself is not in the right headspace to lead the Tulpar and that’s outside of anything with Jimmy. He’s spacey, he’s not sleeping, he’s deeply unhappy with himself and life. It’s why there’s believability he crashed the ship. Maybe the others saw it, or maybe Jimmy heard enough of it to spin it in a way that made Curly seem suicidally depressed.

So the tdlr is I think it wasn’t so much letting Jimmy go, more so not seeing the severity of what he was allowing to transpire. In his mind it’s just another one of Jimmy’s bluffs, cruel words, off words but just words. Jimmy rarely ever acts, why would he now? Maybe he’s never seen it because Jimmy hides those actions? Either way, he just never thought he’d really do it.

The CORE, which was once full of pure magic, turned corrupted and unstable after a bomb made it explode. Pit's and Chara's souls were sucked into the remains of the CORE, corrupting the CORE's magic even further. While Chara's soul stayed untouched by the CORE's corruption, Pit's soul and magic got stained. But he is still himself, despite those new funny voices and hallucinations feelings, right? ... Right?

While the last Pit-got-corrupted-part is still a concept, the first half is set in stone in this AU. I'm close to finding a name, I swear!

The CORE does not directly provide them with magic, like in Horrortale, for example. It was once built to take all the monsters into a self-made-built dimension where -theoretically- humans cannot reach them anymore. It drains the magic from the human world to power up and to transfer it to their dimension for the monsters to use.

I say theoretically since there was still a way for Chara to got sucked into their dimension.

Because of reasons that would be too long to explain, humans found them and attacked while the monsters were celebrating a festival that they hold every year.

That's actually the day I'm focusing on the most right now since everyone's life changes after that. It basically revolves around the CORE's explosion, the reason for the festival's existence, Chara's real dad, and Pit... Papyrus is a depressed mess and will probably never recover from this.

But uhm... I really don't know how to properly show everything. Maybe I just make more lore-dumping posts and put them later inside my pinned post or something. This AU has a lot to unpack, and I didn't even really start with the other's character designs! Except for Chara, but her design has lore reasons.
