The tension on his face was palpable. You glared up at him, using your free hand to try and shove him out of the way; it didn't work, of course. The man was 6' 3" and had at least 100 lbs. on you.

"That's it." He said in finality, bending at the waist to scoop you into his arms. It wasn't as ceremonious as it sounded; you ended up being tossed over his shoulder as though you weighed nothing.

Your fist pounded at his back, but he only began walking toward the exit.

"Put me down, Tavis!" You shouted, but it came out breathier than you liked. Winded from the angry fist fight with the punching bag, and now being bent over his shoulder -- perhaps you were more exhausted than you thought.

"You can forget it."

You were set down with an mmph on the cool marble countertop, and you sucked in a long breath as Garrick released his hold on you. He stood straight up, looking around the bathroom for supplies.

When he turned toward the medicine cabinet on the adjacent wall, reaching in and closing his deft fingers around a bandage roll...

You mentally kicked yourself.

It were mere moments like these that always kept him near the forefront of your mind.

When he turned back, he looked the opposite of thoughtful.

"Not really sure what you were thinking," he muttered, tugging on the end of the roll. "Going so hard like that -- you just got out this morning, for Dunne's sake."

His brows knit as he made to grab your forearm, but you instead shoved his shoulder. His gaze finally met yours at that, fury raging in his irises.

"I can do what I want," you asserted, sitting up straight on the counter. "Clearly I need to be in there every day -- it's friends like you keeping me from doing so that will cause me to lose more challenges."

He huffed in frustration, setting down the bandage roll and gripping your waist. His fingers flexed into the plush of your ass, scooting you to the edge of the counter at once.

"I think we're a little past just 'friends', aren't we Y/N?"

The question wasn't intended to be menacing -- but the way he stood in only a muscle tank and low-rise sweats, his toned torso directly between your knees...

You couldn't even come up with a good response.

Instead, you let him have your arm this time. His eye contact didn't break as he grabbed the roll once more, pulling out a fresh wrap to re-tie your arm with. You only looked away to glance at your wound. It really did look bad; despite all the healing, the laceration must have broken open again today without you noticing.

Silent beats passed between the two of you as he worked, securing the bandage and turning to put the roll away. When he looked to you again, his eyes had softened.

"You have to take care of yourself, Y/N." His gaze is locked onto yours, the seriousness in his tone something you’d become so used to. You sigh, looking down at your bandaged arm.

“I just … I hate feeling so small. So incapable,” you explain. His thumb and forefinger grasp your chin, tilting your head up to look at him. When you do — his lips are mere inches from yours.

“I know how much you’re capable of,” he says quietly, his eyes searching yours like always. “And it’s a lot more than you give yourself credit for.”

You lean in, allowing his firm mouth to press against yours. He sighs, his fingers softly cupping your jaw as the other hand rests atop your thigh. You’re just wrapping your arms around his neck and legs around his waist when he pulls back.

“I’m not kidding Y/N — I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to you.”

Lurkers and enjoyers and love posters are just as important to the fandom, so this is a space for us to do our thing and spread the love 💗

How to Participate

There will be 3 kinds of planned activities hosted on this blog, but there is no single correct way to participate, as long you’re uplifting others. The activities and prompts are meant to be a guideline and source of inspiration. You don’t have to burn yourself out by participating every day or in every activity.

Keep this space positive and abide by standard fandom etiquette. Be mindful of tags and if you don’t think you’ll like a work, don’t click and read it!

Hot takes/unpopular opinions with DC and Marvel Comics (Part 3)

I'm back with another "hot take" post on the aforementioned publishers and their properties. Hope you enjoy!

"Grayson" should've been a Tim Drake series--While I'm not a fan of "Grayson" from the perspective of it feeling like a downgrade for a hero in the main universe to become a spy, I think it would've benefited Tim Drake, given the fact that he needed something new, and it would've been a good way to highlight his reputation as the smartest Robin (which has since been kinda undermined). I also think it could've worked for Damian, but seeing how underrated Tim is, he has my vote.

2. Ric Grayson could've been brought about with the memory crystal--I know hindsight is 20/20, but I do think that Dick Grayson becoming Ric Grayson could've easily been done with the mind control crystal Joker used on him rather than going the cliche amnesia route. At least it would've made Ric's arc a little more likeable. OR we could've had Dick Grayson as a villain while he had amnesia instead of using the memory crystal. Either way, it works.

3. DC really puts the bio kids of SuperBat first--While Nightwing is still popular, I do feel like he's kinda become underrated over the years (not least because of the objectification he's faced in comics and other media), while Red Hood and Tim Drake's Robin definitely feel even moreso. Damian is definitely the face of the Robins now, making it feel like DC prefers Batman with his biological son. A similar thing happened with Superman, with his clone/son Kon-El being kinda forgotten (though I did enjoy him being part of the Titans in "Titans United") and his biological son Jon taking up the Suberboy mantle and getting more space.

4. Damian should've been bi instead of Tim--While stuff like this is gonna get negative attention no matter how you slice and dice it, Damian's youth (both as a person and as a character) would've been less controversial than Tim being bi, especially since DC, definitely showing favoritism to Damian over Tim, would've made sure that Damian's sexuality wasn't all he was, unlike Tim, who only seems to get major attention when it's time for DC Pride. Like, is that all Tim is now? Not the smart Robin, not the heartfelt Robin, but the Robin who's attracted to guys as well as girls? Definitely think Damian would've been treated better--plus IMAGINE if he and Jon started dating. I'm sure that'd make some headlines (plus all of the next-gen Trinity would be bi).

5. Starfire needs another series--Given the success of the "Teen Titans" tv show, I would've thought she'd be a lot more relevant in DC, but she's mostly tied to the Titans now rather than any other property. And even when she gets the spotlight, a lot of it is tied to the tragedy of her homeworld rather than expanding on her culture and Tamaranean history. I don't even remember what Tamaran's current status is, but it'd be nice to explore it in present-day, as well as seeing more of Starfire's family (ie her parents, sister, brother, and cousin), and perhaps retconning Ph'yzzon's death so he can be a love interest to her--even though I do love her with Dick and Roy. Plus I kinda want more diversity in terms of phenotypes; most of them all have the red hair, orange skin, and green eyes going on except for people like Ph'yzzon (perhaps they're different races on Tamaran; IDK, but I'd still want a bit more differentiation within the same race).

6. The O5's return should've been an AU--I stand by this, mainly because they were sent back in time with memories erased later, and their contributions and relationships are short-lived (RIP Storm/Cyclops, Iceman/Romeo, and Angel/X-23). It could've also allowed for more creative storytelling rather than the whole "culture shock" thing with going forward half a century and having to deal with everyone having different feelings about them thanks to their present-day selves. Maybe it's also my desire for a spiritual successor to "X-Men: Evolution."

7. Loki/Scarlet Witch was done dirty--I remember being so frustrated on this. I've only been into comics for half a decade and don't keep track of all of them, but from what I understand, Loki's been making growth from a villain to an antihero. However, Scarlet Witch's comic not only teased us with the possibility with a romance (something I never knew I wanted), but said a romance between them was impossible because Loki wasn't honest with himself and wouldn't change. I feel like that was such a weird slap in the face, telling us that a couple would exist if a character's growth meant anything to the current writers. (Oh, and I'm not making this another bullet point on it's own, but Loki is NOT rocking the black lipstick. Maybe it's just the artists I've seen so far?)

8. Trying to retire Cyclops was stupid--Chris Claremont's desire to retire Cyclops was always weird to me when I found out about it. I know the X-Men face a variety of threats, but at the end of the day, they're superpowered humans who are the next step in evolution, and was made as an allegory to racism. As such, you don't really retire from being the victim of racism; even if Cyclops kept his head down and avoided showing his gift, it felt like going against everything he stood for. Maybe someone can explain Claremont's thought process more for me to understand, but I found it ridiciulous to simply write him as getting married, starting a family, and essentially "forgetting" about the X-Men. It'd be different if he was a mutant with no prior experience in heroism. Plus if we never tried to go that route, maybe Madelyne and Nathan would've gotten better treatment (or maybe they'd never exist at all).

9. Cyclops and Professor X's modern characterization is awful--Okay, my experience as a new(ish) comic reader is definitely showing, as is my exposure to X-Men media. I'm not a fan of hardened Cyclops, and I kinda miss his boy scout personality, as well as a time when Professor X wasn't self-righteous. What are the odds of a soft reboot of them back to their personalities? How easily could they fit that back into the modern Marvel narrative, and how would fans feel about it?

10. Animated theatrical universes should be considered--The DC Universe Animated Original Movies reigned for a long time, but the films were direct-to-video and pretty underrated and had several universes that they took place in. It'd be interesting if a major animation company worked on it--though probably not a big-name, since a cinematic universe would block the development of other films.

A few (possibly?) controversial takes that I have regarding boku dake ga inai machi (mainly rhe manga), starting from lukewarm to more hot takes:

1. This story is way deeper than people give it credit for, and while there are flaws in the writing, I think there's tons of themes that are sadly not talked at all by fans, such as childhood trauma, depression, existentialism and religion.

2. The story should be labeled thriller or suspense instead of mystery. One of the main complaints I hear from people who watched the anime is that it doesn't try to be a mystery at all.

3. Kayo is not a shallow character. She is a traumatized child. Also enough with the "she is just a plot device and does nothing, only to leave the cast". She is an abused 12 year old, she should not be getting involved in solving a serial killing case.

4. Kayo not ending up with satoru is great. I will never forgive the anime for trying to push a romance narrative. Not only is it a great subversion of the "hero gets the girl trope", but it's also incredibly creepy. It doesn't matter that satoru is biologically a child. There's several scenes that point out that he still has the experiences and viewpoint of an adult.

5. If this series had a different audience, it'd be appreciated way more. Sorry, but most if not all mainstream anime have such an "in your face" storytelling, that it doesn't promote thoughtfulness. All people I've seen criticize the anime always have the exact same takes, like "the story is very childish, the killer is predictable, the implied romance is not endgame". While even mainstream anime I personally consider shallow are capable of complicated theming too, the fast pace, overacting and loud sense of humor doesn't leave room for the audience to sit down and process the undertones of the plot. Erased (the anime) has a different energy. The characters don't have exaggerated expressions and despite it being a drama and thriller series, the atmosphere is visibly calmer and cozy. It's not about a grand adventure. Most of the scenes are about every day life. If it was a western cartoon it would probably have better perception because 1) plenty cartoon fans love overanalyzing and 2) unlike adult shows, they are more forgiving of the more "kiddy" aspects of the story (power of friendship and all).

6. After reading some of Kei Sanbe's other and more recent works, I feel more confident to say this:

Yashiro is an underrated villain and is a great antithesis to satoru. Also I genuinely don't think he is a pedo, despite it being a fairly popular consensus. I interpret their relationship as a toxic found family one. It's even stated that satoru views him as a father figure. While yashiro's crimes ARE messed up, there hasn't been any implication that the motive was pedophilia.

Both are pushed to depression and emotional detachment through childhood trauma (satoru with survivor's guilt and feeling responsible for the deaths of kayo and hiromi, with yuuki being accused)(yashiro and the dangerous household he grew up in). Both cannot connect with other people, a common trauma trait. Both tried to find thrill or enthusiasm for life to cope with depression and/or emotional constipation, but they used different means: satoru by helping others, reconnecting with his mother and forming friendships, yashiro through risk taking, scheming and killing. I wish their dynamic was explored a bit more, I think there's potential there. Satoru seems like yashiro's foil to me.

And this is not the first time Kei has written about an unhealthy, complicated (PLATONIC) relationship of villain parent-son.

Yashiro is the only one who believes satoru's revival, while satoru is the first person to see through him and survive. I'll step on english teacher grounds of overanalyzing here, but I see the whole spice thing as a metaphor for the spider, just not sure what metaphor exactly. Satoru and spice survived hell, which may give hope to yashiro he has a chance too. Or maybe spice and satoru ARE the spider. Or maybe spice and the children are hell dwellers, while satoru is the spider who saved them. Or- okay I will stop.

I'm open to discusssion or different opinions, in fact, I encourage it, just please be respectful about it. What I love about fiction is the different interpretations people can form

maxiel, galex, scaniel, brocedes!

Maxiel: makes sense, compels the FUCK out of me

I genuinely don’t think there’s been a ship that has compelled me like Maxiel. They make me so insane and I’ve spent the last 8 months of my life going up and down all 200ish AO3 pages in the tag like some kind of deranged possum, searching for more Maxiel content. They just make so much sense in my mind. You have Max, who has been taught his entire life that his only purpose in life is to win races, who is this angry, strung up little kid when he first joins F1…and then he meets Daniel, who is so kind and charismatic and has always been taught to enjoy the moment and the process of it all and just treats him with so much love even when he’s not winning or when he’s getting criticized by the media…and Max finally learns how to enjoy life outside of racing for the first time. Even outside of the general RPF scene of it all, the absolute pivotal Maxiel moments are so important and have so much significance in the grand scheme of the sport. Daniel leaving Red Bull because of Max (to an extent) which then caused a ripple effect on a whole bunch of people’s careers and ultimately led to the Horrors that we are currently living through, but at the end of the day, it’s about “If it can’t be me, I’m glad it’s him” and that fastest lap into “Thank you, Daniel.” Yeah, I could talk about them for DAYS if given the chance.

Galex: makes sense, compels me

They’re everythingggg to me. I love the childhood friends to lovers thing they have going on. The Galex lore is so interesting, like the throat infection incident, the collarbone biking accident, the whole thing about George being Alex’s hype man/personal photographer as a kid… underrated ship fr. They have the best chemistry and their sense of humour actually work so well together, and I NEED more content from them. I also CANNOT ship either of them with anyone else because it just does! Not! Work! In my head. They are each other’s ride or die and I love that for them.

Scaniel: makes sense, does not compel me

I love their friendship a lot and I think they have so much weird gay energy between them, but unfortunately my day one Daniel ship is still Maxiel. I think Scaniel has potential for growth, but unfortunately they do kinda give off besties to me. I will admit they have had some good, shippable moments, but Scotty just feels like a straight man in my mind. I think it’s just the DR effect (every man within a 5 mile radius falls in love with him) that drives this ship forward tbh.

Brocedes: makes sense, compels me A LOT

THIS is THE SHIP of all ships. The lore goes so hard and it’s so devastating to me. I’m a sucker for a good childhood friends to lovers to enemies storyline, so they are right up my alley. It’s just the most insane story that when I tried explaining it to my casual F1 fan friend, they asked me if it was from a movie and I was like NO! This is irl!!! The way that they have a 6 hour, 3 part YouTube docuseries about their relationship is crazy. No other ship has as much angst as them, and no one will ever come close to being them. It’s the way that they fundamentally are a part of each other’s careers and that you cannot mention one without the other, it’s the way that Nico talks about that era of his life and how he could only stomach their childhood favourite cereal on the weekend before cinching the championship, how he ruined his body and soul to beat Lewis and how his retirement changed Lewis’ whole outlook on the sport!!! And through it all, there is an awkward third-wheel in the form of either Daniel Ricciardo or Sebastian Vettel just smiling through the most disgusting vibes a room could ever have, which, in my opinion, adds to the whole drama of the ship. This ship has so much narrative and character and it is so so devastating to think about, I need to see or make a Brocedes movie before I die.

don’t think i have dream hair. i prefer to switch things up. i get bored if i have the same hair style for more than 6 months

5. What's a chore you actually like doing that surprises people?

hanging clothes, big fan of clothes hanging and closet organizing. i hang most of my clothes (instead of folding) and i have A System. i enjoy putting clothes in their rightful place so that i can revel in my System in it’s full, type and color coded, glory

yes. i tend to fidget with my hair (when it’s not buzzed short). i’ll also fidget with a tube of lip balm or lip gloss if i have one at hand

i fall into random research holes sometimes. my current pet research topic is copaganda in film and television. been reading a lot abt it, and i might just fuck around and write a mini essay on copaganda in 911. idk maybe

tough one. i don’t watch a lot of animated stuff. but bojack horseman, arcane and the owl house stand out from the little that i have seen

9. If you were forced to lose one of your five senses, which one would you choose

i have terrible vision, i’m lowkey face blind and i probably have a mild to moderate case of aphantasia. since my eyes aren’t doing much for me as it is, i’d probably go ahead and get rid of my vision

10. What makes you feel put together? What makes you feel like you have your life in order? You know, that thing that makes you go, okay yeah no I got this.

semi-truthful answer: i’m big on community. fostering cool relationships and practicing philosophies that are conducive to a healthy community makes me feel like i have my life in order
