Why Hotguy (Probably) Isn't Possessed: A DDVAU Post

.... Or at least why it would be a bit biased to say that is the case right off the bat just cause the blorbo said something you really didn't like.

(NOTE: MAJOR SPOILERS FOR DDVAU) (Also the images I've used are all from the comic, go take a look either on Tumblr or Webtoons)

Part 1: Would This Face Lie To You?

Yes. Because everyone has the capacity to lie, and Scar canonically has a silver tongue. Look at 3rd Life and try to tell me otherwise. I will laugh at you.

But the difference is framing. In 3rd Life and nearly everywhere else this silver tongue of Scar's is used, it's in a silly white lie way at best and simply to win a game at worst. Hell, even in other works I've seen it's primarily used to benefit others, not himself.

For this reason (among others that vary from person to person that I won't elaborate on here cause that's complicated), it becomes much easier to believe that Scar here isn't acting normal. He's tapping into his cunning side with much more ruthlessness than we're used to seeing from him normally, and thus we grasp for any other option. Not only that, but the Motherspore Incident gives us the perfect excuse for his behavior, especially with what is said at the end.

Was the target truly Grian, or were they trying to get at Hotguy? We won't know for sure until later, but the idea of him getting possessed is something for the copium to take advantage of, and as such it does so.

(Even for me. I have almost an entire two-monitor screenshot in which I copypasted almost every detailed Hotguy face to analyze and make a decision based on the expressions compared to the latest volume. This I will get into in the part dedicated to his expressions and why they matter for both sides of the argument.)

Either way, assuming someone who is known for using that silver tongue of his to get what he wants isn't doing that of his own free will, even if it feels unkind or out of character at first glance, isn't exactly the smartest thing.

Part 2: The "Pragmatic" Approach Is Not Kind

Aka, "local utilitarian explains the logic behind being a dick in this scenario", or "devil's advocate except the supposed devil is just a blorbo getting into real blackmail".

So, let's first consider Hotguy's primary options for how he could've taken that interrogation, and their effects. I'll list these in order of action taken against Grian for simplicity's sake:

Leave Grian alone entirely. At first, this looks like the best option. Grian needs time to heal, and Hotguy just barging on in like that is stressful at best for someone who'd just been told he got possessed and tried to kill people. But this temporary peace would come with consequences. With no one to tell the public otherwise, Grian would likely get arrested for hiding his status as a mutant from the government. So this one is simply not worth it.

Reason with Grian. This is the option most likely expected from Hotguy before the page rolled around. It gives him a chance to exercise the softer side of his silver tongue a bit more, and is a significantly less aggressive way of trying to get the information he needs to protect the public. The issue with this is that Grian is not cooperative. He does not like Hotguy very much, and definitely would give as little information as he possibly can to what is basically a cop. "Everything you say can and will be used against you," and all that jazz. He's also pretty much immune to Hotguy's charm, so being niceys won't change that. Essentially, no matter what way he goes about it he's going to have to deal in something that Grian actually cares about.

Blackmail Grian. This is the choice Hotguy made, and he didn't sugarcoat it very much either. I'm thinking the reason he did could be related to how he knew simply reasoning with Grian wouldn't work; had he really gone in with the honeyed words, Grian would've told him to cut the bullshit even sooner. This, while more visibly putting Grian in a spot of bother, isn't actually that much more dangerous for him than the other options. I've already explained why the first option actually sucks, and the second option relies on Grian trusting Hotguy (which he doesn't). It also gives Hotguy two things simultaneously: information (his priority), and keeping his friend out of jail (so long as he cooperates, which he has). The second thing may or may not be important to him, but it's still an added bonus. This is the option in which Hotguy is guaranteed to get the most information about the incident.

Turn Grian in immediately. If you hadn't realized there was a worse option than 3 then surprise! There is! This is the option that I believe would actually be out of character for Hotguy. Even if he wanted Grian imprisoned for whatever reason, his priority would still be to get information, nothing else. And there's no guarantee Grian would tell absolutely anything in custody, let alone anything about the incident. It would take potentially blackmailing him here to do it, and that feels like a step too far. Hotguy only needs information, and he knows stigma too well to truly take part in it, especially if it probably won't net him what he needs. So, not that option either.

In all, Hotguy's choice was the only one that could truly get him the yield he wanted: information on the attack in hopes he could prevent any further ones. Do I think he went too far? Yes. Absolutely. He should've stopped with his threats the moment he stopped asking actual questions about the incident. There was no reason (in my opinion) to continue with them.

But for the most part, I believe this isn't a man possessed, just a cop seeking intel. Speaking of.....

Part 3: "Duty"

Sorry guys, superheroes funded by the government are technically cops. This makes Hotguy a cop. Your blorbo is a cop.

In all seriousness, Hotguy does in fact have a job, and as such it is his duty to protect the citizens of the city from the bad and such, blah blah blah. This includes Grian, since he was possessed by the bad and not the bad itself (as such that makes him a victim).

The question, however, remains. "How best does one protect an entire city?" I've answered this already with Hotguy's highest priority in the interaction with Grian: information. To get this information while protecting the most citizens, he must threaten or harm at least one no matter what he does. Because simple threats harm the least, his answer is to threaten two for the sake of maximizing the future harm reduced.

It is, once again, a utilitarian stance on things. But if your goal isn't to be strict to the rules, that's how choices should be made: Not with biases, but with thought given to all options and all those affected.

Now, does his duty state he should be that much of an ass? No, but I already went over this. "He made the best overall choice but he should've been more considerate." It doesn't get much simpler than that.

Part 4: Expression And Tone - The Other Argument

Here we go. This is what originally inspired the making of this post, as an argument for the side that claimed Scar was possessed.

The reason behind it? I'd noticed a significant shift in Hotguy's expressions even without going through each individual page. As someone who cannot read body language for shit usually, this was a pretty significant indicator that something was wrong for me.

Upon further inspection and reflection, this isn't quite the cause for alarm I'd thought it was, but it's still one of the better arguments for Scar being possessed so I'll elaborate.

Before the Motherspore Incident, each of Hotguy's expressions that were close enough to the camera to be drawn properly showed at least one eye through his visor. There is exactly ONE exception to this in my eyes, and even that one can fit in with my claim here: Hotguy's action shot in Chapter 7.

Here, the panel is big enough that if it was any regular panel it would likely show his eyes, but the visor is too small to really draw good eyes for the panel here, not to mention it would probably take away from the composition. But that's not what's important here; that honor goes to the fact that this is the only instance of a bigger panel in which Hotguy's eyes are not shown.

.... Up until Motherspore, that is.

Here, this makes sense: The eye in the first one would get in the way of the text, and in the second one his hair is covering his visor. The third is an action shot, similar to the one in Chapter 7. These make sense.

But then... something shifts once the fight is over and Hotguy carries Grian out. Once he reaches the outside, the amount of times we see his eyes, his expression? TWO.

Both are heavily simplified, with specific intent on making his expression clear on a small panel, but in every other panel from that point on in the chapter show him with the visor covering his expression.

And that's when we get into Chapters 14 and 15. This is when the shift becomes obvious. Instead of all his expressions on large enough panels showing at least one of his eyes, instead we're given almost the exact opposite.

This is the only. I repeat. The ONLY larger panel in which both his eyes are shown (when he has the visor on) since the end of Motherspore.

It's almost the only panel in the entirety of the chapter like that, but there's a singular smaller panel here with both his eyes:

That's it. Everything else has the way his expressions interacting with his visor the exact opposite way from the entire rest of the story so far.

This is why I thought he was, in fact, possessed at first. It was such a dramatic change that, when you don't consider the other reasons why this could be the case, it feels wrong. It feels like he could be possessed.

Especially if you consider this as related to it:

It just feels, if you compile everything together and build that argument, as something that could be plausible.

Plausible, not guaranteed. But plausible nonetheless.

But what could go against this? The tone.

Because, before Motherspore, this whole thing had a much more lighthearted tone. Hotguy had a much more lighthearted tone. Then he has to handle Motherspore. Then, the public, after a fight that made him require backup (true backup, unlike what we see from Cuteguy).

He puts on a mask to the public. That's what happened at the end of Chapter 13.

And then again, when facing Grian. He cannot slip up, cannot let Grian notice who he is or even consider it. He puts on a mask to ensure he can get what he wants safely. That's why we only see his eyes open behind his visor the one time, when Grian cannot look at his face.

He's taking a page from Cuteguy's book, in a way. Not the newest trick in any book, but I figure y'all'd like the connection.

Part 5: In Conclusion

Is Scar possessed? No, probably not. There's always a chance, but it's more likely that everyone got a bit blindsided by the cutthroat way Hotguy handled interrogations.

Remember that characters can make bad or mean decisions! Even if that character is meant to be a good guy, they still can make these choices, mistake or not. Sometimes, it's the best decision they can make. And sometimes, they just went about it in a way they probably shouldn't've.

Either way Hotguy's going to pay in spades by however Cuteguy's going to handle meeting him again, probably.

In DDVAU chapter 14, the first panel has grian with purple eyes

In the next few panels we can see his eyes fade to brown

Grain and CG have different eye and hair color so I’m pretty sure he can change them somehow (probably one of his powers)

But I wonder if this has any lore importance

Purple is watcher color after all :3

There’s also a panel in chapter 4, where he has the watcher symbol in his eye, which I thought was very interesting

Im back again with another theory lads, one I have wanted to share for a LONG time.

THE LACY THEORY, I hope you all enjoy following me down the rabbit hole. Im going over all the information I collected on the DDVAU server, All information comes from the public chat, the offical playlist and the double hearted comic. That being said Lets begin this:

So lets start off with the big question: What is Lacy? Most likely you wont know of it outside of the discord server, I wanted to wait till I had a bit more evidence and information to present before I showed it out but I think I have enough complied. So!

Lacy is the unoffical name of a ship that will appear in Double Hearted. It was first mentioned in regards to the DDVAU Playlist which has been said that each song will give insight either to the plot, or a character development. The characters involed are: Grian, Scar, Martyn, Jimmy, Tango, Pearl (and Gem now added)

Its described in the songs as a messy situationship. So far Marru has confirmed it has its own playlist with songs in order of a timeline. These songs are:

-Lacy by Olivia Rodrigo

-Footnote by Conan Grey

-The Ballad of Lucy Grey by Rachel Zegler

-It took me by surprise by Maria Mena

-Obsessed by Olivia Rodrigo

With this as well we have this Image (it is noted that Maruu edited this photo to make sure not to give away who the characters are. I was given permission to show as its in the server)

So. Who are these two?

I heavily believe its Grian and Martyn. But why do I jump to that so quickly? Lets start with the drawing first. A while back in one of the earlier livestreams, we got this image:

This takes place in college, and as you can see. Grian has much longer hair there. I was able to take the drawing and line up that the hair strands matched Grian's.

Also, @rebelrenee36 was the one to discover there was actually another image of this drawing from the top half. I wont be posting that one here but we did see enough to conclude that Grian was one of the people in the picture.

But then why did I think it was Martyn in the second image?

Major shout out to @coatree who brought the idea up to me which resulted in me being insane about figuring it out.

I want to take you all to a song called Unravelling- the crane wives. It was one of the rare few songs that got confirmed to a character and we were told it was a Grian song.

In unravelling, the verses talks about different people in Grian's life who had shown him compassion and love. But then theres this:

At the time I needed to make a process of elimiation on who this was, but chapter 20 has given me the answer:

Martyn was the one who left Grian.

Its still a bit farfetched right? Lets take a look at the playlist songs. We know that Oh No by Marina, is a canonical song to Martyn, and I was able to assess that Martyn has a very sort of ride or die risk mentality, and when you compare this to The ballad of Lucy Grey?

Danced for my dinner?

and the gamble line fits along the lines of the Martyn songs the server has managed to find connections to.

When I started this connection, I started to notice some things:

Martyn is STARING at Grian and Big B and I had always wondered why but now I start to wonder...was he jelous?

Then if we take the art from the phones you see in Grians lock screen he has this image:

Martyns hand is on Grian's shoulder.

(also its funny to me that Big B and Martyn share the colour scheme outfit but reversed)

Then we finally got chapter 14, Martyns introduction and what is he like?

He is genuinely concerned for Grian and I think the only time we see urgancy from this man because the second Grian is ok he is chill the entire time, and we KNOW that Martyn hasnt shown back in the captial for such a long time now

Its no surprise Grian was taken back seeing him return:

I want to note two things as well in this chapter that really helped me form this theory, first of all: Martyn's blushing

The second comes from this

THIS MF ABSOLTUELY HAS HISTORY WITH GRIAN.

Its the fact that he knew what Grian wanted without Grian ever having to say a word. These two defintiely have a strong bond, plus the fact when Gem asks if Grian is comfortable with everyone being in the room when Grian discusses his abilities he says yes. Yes to mumbo who is his best friend, yes to Jimmy his cousin and someone he cherishes a lot and Martyn.

He is comfortable not only showing his wings off but also discussing his powers, something that he has kept wraps from EVERYONE.

and then chapter 20....oh my god I wasnt prepared for this.

There is defintiely more to this theory, we dont know why they broke up, why Martyn left but Its clear these two have history. I have so many questions that I cant wait to see with upcomming chapters.

Ddvau theories part 2 :D

I wanna talk about background's, so look this is from chapter 2 and it's obvious at this point that Grian has feelings for Scar, and whenever he interact's with him the background changes

And this is from chapter 16 (I think) and again, the background for Gem doesn't look the same with chapter 2 but they do look similar so I could be a more recent feeling (pinning) hat Gem has for Pearl

And here is the background again in chapter 18, all of them don't look the same, but do look similar, with the faded pink color with sometimes white dots.

The same background in this one ↑ also appears in the last panel of chapter 18 but it's similar to the one like Gem in chapter 16 (pink background with a white border) so again it could mean it's a recent feeling Grian has for HG, but I forgot to screenshot it so you'll have to see it yourself :')

this one about family stuff. to be clear: these are some theories ive had, and they probably will be made null and void by future chapters. (though the more data ive collected to throw this post together is just solidifying these way further into my mind. they just make so much sense.) but thought i'd share them anyways!!!!

so. i believe grian and jimmy's parents are these three individuals. florencia and sparrow are grian's mom and dad (sparrow is the only avian mutant listed in the parent references, and florencia's design is very purple and we keep seeing doodles of her that just feel very watcher-y and ominous.) and canary is jimmy's mom (i mean come on her name is CANARY)

grian states in chapter 9 that he and jimmy are cousins when jimmy refers to the pair of them as "the great witch brothers," but then in chapter 16 they seem to refer to the same person as "dad."

aaand here are a few doodles from the parent reference image post that i think are of note

SO. MY THEORY.

sparrow and canary are siblings. sparrow at some point had a kid with florensia (but i think they probably split up pretty early on). canary was a single mother, and she and sparrow teamed up to raise grian and jimmy together. meaning sparrow is teeechnically jimmy's uncle, but he just calls him dad. and i dont think grian has ever mentioned his mom in any of the comics?

and like it could also be that sparrow and canary are a couple instead of siblings... but both of them having bird names and jimmy and grian being cousins makes me think that they're both single-parent siblings who raised their kids together.

NOW THIS LEADS INTO MY SECOND THEORY

yeah the brain is working overtime today

so, assuming that florencia is grian's bio mom. for her power it's listed that she's a prophet.

now based on the other parents and who they correspond with (and i think this was mentioned in a worldbuilding post) powers are genetic. like, tango's dad is a fire elemental and his mom has red eyes. jimmy's mom is an empath, which matches up with jimmy's powers of mind reading.

now grian has avian mutations from his dad, but. not really anything obviously from his mom. he can heal super fast, but i dont really think that being able to tell the future translates into speed healing very well.

AND THEN.

in chapter 14, when gem is questioning grian about if he has any other notable mutations, both he and mumbo get VERY visibly nervous. and he brushes off the question by going "uh duh i've got wings"

i didnt notice this my first few read-throughs of this chapter, but now that i have noticed it i think it is very much so obvious that he is hiding something.

almost like... grian has a secret third power... that he doesnt want to reveal to anyone...

AND THIS IS BACKED UP BY ANOTHER BIT FROM CHAPTER 9

where jimmy talks to grian about training their powers. ...which of grian's known powers would he need training for??? having wings??? innate speed-healing????

Okay, here we go lol

Reasons to support the theory that the Mimic is pretending to be Hotguy/Scar - a (not definitive) analysis of the latest DDVAU chapter!!

note : this list is not everything covered, of course, there’s a lot more I could look into but have chosen not to- that being said, anyone is free to chime in in the comments or re-blogs with other stuff to support the theory + other interesting details noticed, ect.

and, of course, this is nothing but a theory I have chosen to analyse for the fun of it. I am in no way claiming this is canon to the storyline, and tbh I’m not quite sure I believe it true myself.

okayyy, without further ado:

analysing the latest chapter

Scar’s Body language

here we can see that Scar is sat, leaning into Cub with his arms crossed. while this seems like a perfectly normal thing to do (and could definitely be just Scar’s normal body language) we can see similarities between this and the Mimic’s pose at the end of Mother Spore, Part lll :

throughout this whole scene, and the only canon ‘screen time’ we currently have of the Mimic, they can be shown in this same position, standing, leaning slightly back with arms crossed- similar to Scar’s position in chapter 15.

2. Scar’s words in this same scene

I find this very interesting. As far as we know, Scar (as his Hotguy persona atleast) doesn’t have much reason to desire mind controlling abilities. He’s a very powerful figure, and as Cub says, he can literally ‘control the masses’. I can only think of a few possible reasons he might say this/desire the ability.

The Mimic, however, seems to be one of the main (if not THE main) instigators of the spore. It would make sense for The Mimic to have such a keen understanding of it, and from what we know of their personality, a comment like such might even make sense.

1. To control Cuteguy. Cuteguy is a rebel, one of an organisation seperate to the government that is actively campaigning against them. Hotguy and him have not often seen eye to eye. It’s not far fetched to think that Hotguy could, in theory, find mind control useful in discovering Cuteguy’s identity (which he has shown interest in discovering multiple times).

2. For gaining information about mother spore from the attack- as well as gaining information from suspects, victims, and others for other similar cases (assuming he often deals with those)

3. To use, in some way, in his real life, as Scar the civilian (???)

4. This could also be interpreted as a passing joke/a lighthearted comment on Scar’s end ofc

3. Scar’s reaction to Cub asking him about Grian, and his newly discovered mutant traits

In this scene, Scar seems shocked about something. He doesn’t catch on to what Cub means at first.

Let’s say, for a moment, we pretend Scar IS the Mimic.

The mimic has seen Hotguy interact with Grian during the Mother Spore attack. As far as we know, this could very well be the first time the Mimic has seen Hotguy/Scar and Grian interact at all. Perhaps they weren’t aware that Scar and Grian were friends in their civilian lives.

And then, Cub comes in and says “what are you gonna do about your friend?”. Cub refers to Grian as merely Scar’s ‘friend’ and does not give the name of who he is talking about. Scar seems shocked ‘what friend could Hotguy possibly have who is relevant in this conversation?’ maybe.

Then, after Scar’s confused ‘what’ Cub clarifies. “Grian… The avian?” Scar seems to realise who Cub means, but we don’t really see any recognition in his gaze in the next frame. Scar STILL seems shocked. Of course, it seems very obvious to attribute this to, possibly, Scar is still processing the situation and/or doesn’t want to open up about it. But I don’t think THIS amount of shock and confusion from Scar’s end makes all too much sense.

He’s very close to Cub, and we’ve seen him open up to Cub in past chapters. Except, in this chapter he seems cold, eyes filled with no recognition. He rushes out of the room soon after when Zedaph announces Grian is awake (to go talk to Grian).

4. Hotguy/Scar’s reaction to Grian mentioning his mutant traits

When Grian mentions his newly discovered mutant traits, and how Hotguy has every ability to arrest him for hiding them, Hotguy’s reaction is surprisingly severe.

He says “I don’t care if you’re a mutant. You’re not the first, nor the last person who has to lie to the government about it. So don’t feel so special.”

His wording seems almost as if he’s speaking from a first-hand experience. And, assuming the Mimic is a mutant of sorts (he has a mimic ability, right? Shapeshifting or something is what I’m guessing) it kind of makes sense if the Mimic has had to hide their abilities from the government. That they might have had a similar experience to Grian and that’s why Hotguy’s reaction is so strong in this scene.

5. Idk but the writing on the note on the cookies is purple lol

I mean like,,,, guys,,,, purple is the Mimics colour,,,,, why would Scar/Hotguy write in purple,,,,, it doesn’t make sense if you ask me

I MEAN IT IS,,, OBVIOUSLY JUST KIND OF THE DEFAULT PEN COLOUR I KNOWW maybe I’m looking too much into this lmaoo

6. maybe the mimic was being super mean to Grian to get Grian against Hotguy for some reason

and also!! the phone number on it!! What if it’s ACTUALLY the number for something to do with the Mimic, and they’re trying to lure Grian into calling the number so they can, idk??? What IS the mimic’s intentions?? Get Grian on their side?? Control Grian??

idk. Just like. In extra bonus art we see the Mimic flirting with Cuteguy/Grian(?) + maybe also secret motives for getting Grian against Hotguy? Idk.

also this is all assuming the Mimic has some sort of shapeshifting/mimicking ability to use to mimic Hotguy or something!! I honestly don’t know much about them so if there’s any extra info doody or maruu gave i probably don’t know much lol

OF COURSE GUYS this is all silly ramblings/speculation, I’m just writing this for fun loll, it’s a possibility ig but I’m definitely not trying to write off hotguy/scar’s actions because I do definitely believe him to be capable of manipulation and it DOES honestly add a lot of depth to his character which I love.

DDVAU THEORY

Spoilers for chapter 21!

In my previous theory, I went over why Jimmy was being targeted and concluded that they were using Grian as a means to get to Jimmy and his mind reading abilities. With the recent chapters however, I actually think it was the reverse.

The GrandMaster Spore Event

I highly recommend reading my previous theory before getting into this one, but regardless you can continue without!

I have made edits since the original rendition of this theory, more specifically regarding the timeline. This post may change but not drastically! (Timeline edits are towards the end!)

Cuteguy/Grian will be forced into joining with the Mimic and the Wayte Family (or in Pearl's words) The All Seeing Coven.

Buckle Up! Cause this is a long one!

So we know in the events of Mother Spore, Grian and Jimmy were specifically being targeted. This idea can be reinforced in chapters 15, 18 & 21.

Chapters 15 & 18 - The Fungus doesn't react until Hotguy holds up one of Grian's feathers.

Chapter 21 - CeeCee (Purple fella) mentions that the Spore they created was ONLY supposed to be sleep inducing, also mentioning that it was modified to the moon and back. This means that it was specifically modified to target Grian.

But why was Jimmy also targeted?

Because Grian and Jimmy are cousins. Notice how Grian was the only one that was possessed but the Spore also wanted Jimmy, who was passed out. (Chapter 12)

Since the spore was modified to infect Grian, it likely had something to do with his DNA. Since Jimmy is Grian's cousin, the spore got confused, it probably thought that Jimmy was also a target. This can also be reinforced in chapters 13 & 21.

(Chapter 13) CeeCee says that it didn't go as the Mimic intended it too. The Mimic responds by saying they got what they wanted anyways over top the panel of Grian.

(Chapter 21) Mr.D'onofrio (the old guy) talks about discussing results, referring to the events of Mother Spore. To which Miss Florencia says that they were able to develop the Fungus further and perfect it. (Keep this in mind for later!) Also mentioning the 'collateral damage' that was caused as a result, indirectly mentioning Jimmy.

It looks like that what happened to Jimmy in Mother Spore was probably an accident.

However, Jimmy became target after Mother Spore

My reasoning for this is because of the events that happen in chapter 17 compared to Chapters 20 & 21.

In chapter 17, Jimmy visits Grian in his hospital room before heading out. But towards the end of the interaction, Grian jokingly mentions Jimmy's mind reading abilities.

Which is the only time since after the events of Mother Spore (that I know of) was mentioned that Jimmy has those kind of abilities.

This is curious as later in the chapter Jimmy receives some sort of "message" from a strange purple shadow (Who could or could not be the Mimic, differ from the previous theory)

With the after match of Jimmy's eyes and shadow appearing more purple.

What does this have to with anything?

Well! I believe that the message Jimmy received is about a meeting happening the next day (sound familiar?)

Chapter 20 picks up on the morning after the events of chapter 17.

Martin starts off by saying Jimmy looks awful and it's worth noting that Jimmy's facial expression is very alert. He looks like he's about to leave before Martin asked where he is going.

Jimmy acts a little surprised by this and not immediately saying where he's going and vaguely mentioning shopping before going. It is until after Martin says "Out? Again?" when Jimmy finally explains he's meeting with Tango and heading to Lizzie's and Joel's Cafe.

But I think Jimmy was lying, and more likely he isn't meeting them until much later.

In Chapter 21, Florencia mentions that Mr.Wayte would've been here if it weren't for an unexpected meeting.

Let's pay attention to the word "Unexpected"

Martin didn't know Jimmy was going out.

Hotguy mentions that this meeting was sudden.

Florencia says an unexpected meeting occurred.

This is NOT a coincidence.

Jimmy hadn't completely lied about meeting with Tango, Lizzie, and Joel, as in chapter 19 we see that it's raining and Jimmy's wearing the same outfit. Also referencing that he asked Martin to tag along

It should also be noted that it's much later in the day, giving more room for Jimmy to meet up with Mr.Wayte. Jimmy added saying he knew Martin was busy but he could tag along if he wanted to as a better masking effect to cover up the fact that he was actually going somewhere else. Which is plausible due to the fact that Tango and Martin don't seem to get along well, further empathizing that Martin probably wouldn't have gone anyways.

The message Jimmy received was incredibly vague.

This is true, but it's possible that Jimmy mind read the figure approaching him, which is how he got more information about the meeting and also a supporting reason to why his eyes glowed purple.

What could the meeting be about?

I believe that the meeting with Mr.Wayte and Jimmy is about a future event that could occur in DDVAU.

I will be calling it

“The GrandMaster Spore” event.

Do you remember earlier when the Mimic said they got what they wanted? And also when Florencia said the spore has been perfected?

I think the only reason they would design a spore specifically to Grian is to redesign CuteGuy as a villian.

In Chapter 21, Florencia offers the Mimics abilities to aid in capturing vigilantes, given the circumstances, they are most directly referring to CuteGuy.

With the knowledge of the spore being directly to control Grain and Grian alone, once CuteGuy is out and about in public, the spore will be activated again but this time it's stronger. This is when the Mimic and potentially their allies come into play in capturing and taking down the former vigilante CuteGuy.

The GrandMaster Spore event will change how people view vigilantes, destroying CuteGuy's reputation and especially how HotGuy sees CuteGuy. After Grian is captured, the Mimic offers Grian a place what Pearl calls, "The All Seeing Coven" which is a name that implies an assertion of power. Power that is even shown the recent chapters.

(Chapter 16) The All Seeing Coven is responsible for covering up the events of Mother Spore.

(Chapter 21) By keeping good ties with the government, they were able to keep it listed as a 'creature' attack.

Grian initially refuses the invitation but then the Mimic uses Jimmy as leverage, keeping him in danger since the meeting with Mr.Wayte.

This image from a livestream (I think) shows the relationship between the Mimic and Grian/Cuteguy. If you ask me, Grian doesn't seem to be enjoying what's happening!

In Summary

The All Seeing Coven wants CuteGuy to join them but have to take drastic measures for him to do so. They use Jimmy as leverage over Grian and destroy his reputation as a vigilante.

I know this seems like a bit of a stretch but I do think for the most part this theory is plausible! (But I could be TERRIBLY wrong lol)

I also want to briefly mention the timeline of events as it might clear up some questions. (Editied)

Here's what everyone's doing during Wednesday and Thursday.

Hotguy goes to visit Grian in the morning where he later goes to cub's lab and experiments with the feather (Chapter 18)

At the same time Jimmy leaves home and goes to meet with Mr.Wayte. (Chapter 20 where Jimmy mentions he’s going out again. Chapter 21 Miss Florencia mentioned that Mr.Wayte had somewhere else to be)

Hotguy then goes home to rest, and gets back up when it's 17:00, or 5:00pm. (Chapter 19)

Hotguy is picked up to go to Lizzie's and Joels and at the same time Jimmy picked up Tango to head to the same place. (Chapter 19)

Hours later (It's now thursday) HotGuy needs to attend a sudden meeting, mentioning that he didn't have time to meet with Grian. The meeting is with the Mimic and Florencia. (chapter 21)

DDVAU THEORY AND YAP TIME!!!!!!!!

right. so. in chapter 14, we see that Grian's wings have been completely... charred? idk how else to say it.

this is to be expected, right? dude just got corrupted, its obvious some parts of him are gonna be altered mentally/physically.

but heres where it gets concerning: in the newer chapters, we see that his wings are healing. and if they are healing, the original color is gonna come back.

you can clearly see that his wings are regaining their signature dark-to-light pink. why is this bad? well, the color is coming back quickly, he is not fully healed yet as far as im aware, and i dont think he's gonna be discharged from the hospital soon. this means that when the colors have fully restored, he'll probably still be in the hospital.

flashback to chapter 9, when Hg asked Cg about his wings:

Hg knows what Cg's wings look like, so he's bound to be confused when he shows up to Grian's hospital room one day and his wings are the exact same as Cg's.

this is gonna cause problems. people are gonna be confused. Hotguy is gonna figure it out.

I don’t know if any of this has been confirmed or not

Alrighty so I was just re reading the latest update because I love how Doody draws Jimmy, and I noticed something a bit odd…

Here we see Martyn sleeping soundly. His feet are facing away from Jimmy’s bedroom door, to Martyn’s right. Mmkay?

Then everything with Jimmy and the mystery person happens, and Jimmy runs out to check on Martyn, and we assume he’s just sleeping because that’s what JIMMY assumes. Right?

But take another look:

Martyn’s position has completely changed, he’s flipped over the complete opposite direction and his foot is “in the air”. Also, the pillow that was previously on the couch is now on the floor.

This could be nothing… but I’m suspicious by nature. So here are my two theories:

Theory 1:

Martyn DID notice the mystery person and put up a fight. He failed, and ended up unconscious in a position that suggests a struggle.

Theory 2:

Mystery person “took care” of Martyn before attacking Jimmy to eliminate any chance of failure. What that means? Im not sure. Maybe they knocked him unconscious or scrambled his brain before he even noticed they were there, but it’s a possibility.

Now there’s one more thing…

But I doubt it’s what’s happening.

There’s the theory that mystery person IS Martyn (I’m unsure if this has been discussed by Doody or Maruu) but I don’t think that likely given the obvious difference in their stature and features.

Or yknow, maybe he really is just sleeping.

But hey that’s just a theory. A DDVAU theory. Thanks for watching.

I don't think Ive seen anyone breakdown this scene, but hi I really wanted to talk about Grian's characterization so far in volume 2 starting with his scene with HG in the latest chapter and where I think they're going with his character in DDVAU.

To star this off I want to talk about how Grian views HG (save for Valentines) Its always met with disdain or irritation, and I think its because of how HG presents himself to Grian, a cop, a threat. This means there's always a level of caution met with him and mild irritation.

So when Grian wakes up to HG in his room in ch18 its cold. There's this wall already up between the two because of how HG treated him in chapter 15. He was threatened. So already the second he's awake he's on the defense, he wont let HG get to him, hes in control of his emotions.

Or well, this WOULD'VE worked until he realizes HotGuy has interrupted the one thing Grian could distract himself with. Grian went for the DS to avoid dealing with Hotguy and i'm going to assume Grian's done this before when he visited. So being cut off is something Grian wasn't expecting, being forced to confront Hotguy in his space-

Hes genuinely mad.

(the fact that Grian has this red hue over him, the expression turns from this casual oh you annoy me to oh you have actually genuinely pissed me off is so clear in the way Doody draws Grian that I wanted to point out because LORD THE CHILLS I HAD)

But Grian lashes out, his reaction is explosive because he was thrown off, its such a quick moment also, something as simple as his DS being covered and being forced to deal with Hotguy was the breaking point and LORD WAS HIS REACTION INTENSE.

He's genuinely upset.

He's frozen, hes curled up faced down with fists punching the bed because that man has been pushed too far. Hotguy has repeatedly since the incident, been in Grian's space whether he's wanted it or not and its not letting Grian breathe. They do note a few times Grian didn't ask Hotguy before this to leave but I think that this was brewing over time and again its an impulsive reaction- the DS being obstructed isnt the issue here and it seems random for him to be so angry over it but I think this was built up over time from the stress Grian's been experiencing. Hotguy reminds Grian of the school, of Mother Spore and the trauma that he was left with. Its no wonder he just wants a break from it.

And I think Hotguy in that moment realized he went too far.

( I want to note as well that Grian doesnt actually move until Hotguy speaks, he's braced and tense. He's waiting for a bad reaction for his lash out)

But Hotguy calmly agrees and offers to leave leaving Grian stunned because he was listened to. Hotguy understood him.

Now here's where i'm going to pull up a comparison I realized about Grian in chapter 14. This is not the first time he has impulsively pushed someone away, because don't forget he's done this to Jimmy.

He cuts the conversation off before it can get anywhere, its abrupt.

Something I've noticed with Grian is when he pushes both of them away theres this moment of pause, where he wont look at them. He doesnt want to see what their reaction is. Between the two scenes I find it interesting that with Jimmy, Grian manages to gather the strength to carry on his point, he looks to Jimmy after a moment of composing himself and is firm if not emotionally tired. He's scared of Jimmy's reaction but he needed to put that line down. With Hotguy like i've said, his reaction was unexpected, its abrupt and its scary for him. He's just yelled at an emerald solider (heck, the HEAD of the emerald soliders) to leave him alone quite aggressively, I think Grian kept his head down because he was waiting for the aftermath.

Its so interesting to me because in both these scenes, Jimmy and Hotguy were unintentionally pushing themselves into Grian's space, both were made from good intentions, but it wasn't what Grian wanted and the fallout afterwards leaves them at a loss for words before composing themselves and trying to make the situation light once more.

Now, Im about to throw you all a curveball and say that I genuinely think that DDVAU is trying to hint to us that Grian has BPD (borderline personality disorder)

Why do I think this? We're only a couple chapters in Volume 2 you must be asking me.

And well, I think already there are some foundations being put down in front of us starting with: Attachment Issues.

Have you all wondered WHY Grian pushed Jimmy away in chapter 14 when we have seen time and time again how protective Grian is over Jimmy? He snapped at Hotguy at the mear mention of Jimmy being accused, He freaks out when he sees Jimmy got hurt in the hospital. Both are very visiral and panicked reactions:

And yet, when he sees Jimmy was hurt and Jimmy offers to be beside Grain to preen his wings, he outright refuses, and lord you can TELL Grian wasn't happy doing that.

When he gets what he wants and Jimmy backs off? He's devastated.

I think Grian is afraid of letting Jimmy be that close to him. For what reason? Im not too sure yet but this seemed very much a spur of the moment reaction- a moment of fear from Grian.

I believe that Grian is a very emotive person and at rapid paces, its quite subtle but in chapter 17 theres a moment where Grian pulls away for just a page, the second Jimmy offers again to take care of him Grian is back to that defensive wall, but its not for too long either because Grian is instantly back to being relaxed.

Grian isnt as subtle with his emotions like Scar is, he is very much an open book and while hes better at withholding them when he feels in control of a situation it shows more when he isnt:

And I think its so important to stress why this is a thing in volume 2 and not in volume 1. Because Grian seemed to be perfectly fine right?There was no issues.

This is because Grian has been majorly thrown back.

He got possessed by the spore creature, trapped Jimmy and the school and tried to kill Hotguy which he doesn't even remember, he just has brief moments of paranoia over not remembering what he did but hearing about it from everyone else. His wings are out, Hotguy KNOWS he's an avian, he's seen Jimmy hurt by what he thinks is his actions and has had Hotguy accuse Jimmy infront of him.

He's being pressured to comply with Hotguy lest he wants everyone to know hes a mutant or worse a witch which can change everything.

This man is STRESSED. Majorly so, both being pushed to his limits body wise since he was shot at and also thrown against walls numerous of times and had the spores literally eat away his insides causing his wings to be in a state of distress. But also he is under intense emotional stress seen from the feathers on Grian's face in chapter 14, he doesnt like not knowing what happened to him and Hotguy again has pushed him past his brink.

again why do I think its BPD? I just said that Grians under a lot of stress, its understandable that hes going to lash out. But i heavily think its within the context of him pushing away Jimmy and the newest scene of chapter 1 8 thats really making me lean towards something is going on. That reaction was intense and I think we're going to be getting more insight into Grian as the chapter comes.

Because, he's successfully pushed away Hotguy.

I wonder where thats going to lead us.

I've said this before in my 1st post here on Tumblr, that Florencia and whatever this thing is that haunted Jimmy in chapter 17 look very alike. To me at least although, I've seen other people say something about them looking alike too.

So my theory here,

Is that again, that thing ↑ (I don't mean to be rude lol) could either be Florencia, or something else thats being controlled by Florencia herself, or the mimic, or even both of them.

If it is controlled by the mimic, it's just gonna be mother spore all over again but with less.. uhm, spores and more mind controlling (?) idk English isn't my 1st language shut up what I do know, is that she'll probably be one of the main antagonist

But yeah I don't know if Florencia has been confirmed to be a canon parent of someone, or even just someone who has anything to do with the mimic. if so I'm gonna look like a real idiot here but I'm taking my chances :))

Hi, so, incredibly scuffed first post, but this has been on my mind since last chapter and I haven't seen anyone else mention it, sooo

Is it just a coincidence that this purple warp shadow effect has made all of two appearances in the whole au, and both in the two new chapters when the topic of Grian's memories from being possessed comes up? Like is it just me or is that foreshadowing, or a hint, or a power taking effect orrr??

I could be imagining things, but either way it's a wild coincidence (and please tell me if I tagged this wrong)
