February Reading Recap
Monsters: A Fan's Dilemma by Claire Dederer. I didn't find a whole lot new in this book, as far as thinking through questions of how to deal with art made by people who have done things or hold opinions that one finds morally reprehensible, but it was a well-written and thoughtful probing of the subject nonetheless. I really appreciated the fact that Dederer was comfortable (or, if not comfortable then at least accepting) of coming to a place with no easy answers. rea
Stars of Chaos: vol. 1 by Priest. I'm not sucked into this one yet, but I am intrigued by it enough that I'm going to keep reading. I haven't hooked into the main relationship, and it hasn't had the same level of delightful banter (at least, as yet) that I have enjoyed in other Priest novels I've read, but I do have volume 2 sitting on my shelf and I'm looking forward to reading it.
System Collapse by Martha Wells. I find that I've liked the early Murderbot books a lot more than the later ones, and this one unfortunately continued that trend. I don't think the series has overstayed its welcome for me yet - I'll probably continue to read it, at least for now - but I find myself losing interest.
Three Parts Dead by Max Gladstone. I said I was going to reread it and I did! And it didn't blow me away in quite the same way I remember it doing when I read it the first time around several years ago, but I still really enjoyed it, and I enjoyed it enough this time around (and was still compelled enough by the worldbuilding, which I do remember being a big part of what stood out to me), that I plan to reread the rest of the series as well. But while, again, it didn't blow me away the way I remember, I would say that I generally recommend it, particularly as a fantasy that is doing some things different.
Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation (Manhua): vol. 5 by Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. I am only and specifically reading the volumes of the manhua that have Yi City in it, so I'm pretty much exclusively assessing this based on my Yi City feelings. And while overall I feel like the art style isn't working for me in a way that is impacting my ability to really get into it there was at least one panel that really conveyed something and made me Feel Things, so it gets credit for that. I am enjoying the experience of doing Yi City in a whole new format, though, that's enjoyable for the sheer "getting to do Yi City, again, but in a different medium this time" reason.
We Are Satellites by Sarah Pinker. I read this book for a book club I'm in and I found it rather too didactic and the ending a little too pat. The family dynamics were strongly written and I sort of feel like Pinker could've written a stronger book that was just about a family without the part about New and Suspect Technology. I wouldn't even say that I necessarily disagree with the points I think she's making in this book, but I would say that it went a little too hard and a little too obviously on making those points.
Too Like the Lightning by Ada Palmer. I liked this one and particularly as of the last...idk, five pages or so, I'm so on board for what comes next. I am promised that it gets even weirder and given that it was already fairly weird...I'm fascinated by the worldbuilding here, and the conceit of the Enlightenment-style contrasted with the future setting is a fun one. I'm looking forward to more.
Ring by Koji Suzuki. I was neither scared by this book (though perhaps I was ruined by knowing the whole thing more or less beat for beat) and did not particularly enjoy the experience of reading it, and then the part where Sadako was revealed to be...genderweird? somehow? unclear to me what the author was going for exactly, sort of tanked it for me. I probably will not be reading the rest of the series unless I get truly desperate for horror to read.
Ashes of the Sun by Django Wexler. I don't know that I'd say this was the highest quality fantasy I've read recently but it might be the new-to-me one I've liked the best in a while. It was a lot of fun, very fast-moving, and I was intrigued enough by the entire set-up that I pretty much immediately put the second book on hold at the library after finishing this one. Maybe it's just been too long since I read a new-to-me fantasy book that really grabbed me, but I liked this one rather a lot and even if it was maybe more "fun" than "good" I'm still calling that enough to give this one a loose recommendation.

This edition of the Marshall Star from 1973, a newsletter of the George C. Marshall Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama, features an article titled “Anita, Job Done, Dies Aboard Skylab.”
The article goes on to explain that Anita was the back-up spider in the Web Formation Experiment.  The primary spider, Arabella, was still alive at the time of the newsletter. Arabella’s current whereabouts are unknown.

Marshall Star Vol. 14, No. 2 . NASA George C. Marshall Space Flight Center -- Huntsville, Ala. 35812 . September, 1973 Final EVA Saturday Skylab 3 Crew Prepares For Next Week's 'Splash' Skylab's second manned crew, prvoding a bonanza of scientific data to investigators on Earth. has begun preparations for splashdown and recovery scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 25. As they head into the home stretch, Astronauts Alan Bean, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma are operating ahead of experiment timelines. Flight directors estimate they will exceed 100 percent of their planned activity in all scientific disciplines. The crew is scheduled to conduct its third and final EVA Saturday. Exposed film cannisters will be removed from the Apollo Telescope Mount's instruments for stowage inside the Command and Service Module and return to Earth. For the EVA, the crew is to awaken at 2 a.m. Hatch opening is expected about four hours later. Monday the crew becan changing the rhythm of their sleep-work cycle by arising at 4 a.m. after goint to bed two hours early. This schedule was to be followed Tuesday. Today the crew planned to arise at 2 a.m. after beginning their sleep period at 6 p.m. last night. Purpose of the new sleep-work cycle is to prepare the astronauts for splashdown day when they will be required to arise early for a full day's activity. The crew was given the go- ahead last week for continuation to the end of the 59-day mission. This approval for a fourth incremental extension beyond 28 days followed review of the inflight medical data and the recommendation of the NASA director for life sciences, Dr. Charles A. Berry. The crew's health and spirits are excellent. The body weight of each has been relatively constant (See SKYLAB on Page 4) SOLAR ERUPTION -- A mammoth solar eruption is seen in this photo taken by the White Light Coronagraph about Sklyab. The eruption expanded into space at a speed of about one million miles per hour. When photographed it was approximately 220 times the diameter of Earth. Solar eruptions are a result of the interaction between solar material and magnetic fields around the Sun. Combined Federal Campaign 'Kickoff' Scheduled Monday MSFC's 1974 Combined Federal Campaign gets underway Monday with a "kickoff" in Morris Auditorium. The annual campaign combines the monetary needs of many health, welfare and recreational agencies into one drive. Rober G. Sheppard, executive chairman, stated the drive officially begins with the 10:45 a.m. kickoff and will end November 2. He explained that the 1974 goal is to do as well as in 1973 when MSFC employees contributed $194,712. Monday's kickoff ceremonies will feature and address by Dr. Rocco A. Petrone, director. He will be joined by several distinguished guests, including Mrs. Ruth Ferrari, International Services Agencies; Tom Horton, Jr., National Health Agencies; and Mrs. Jerri McLain, Huntsville/ Madison County United Way. Anita, Job Done, Dies Aboard Skylab One of Skylab's two "spider astronauts" --who never were intended to be brought back to Earth--has now finished her job in space and is dead. Anita, the backup spider for the Web Formation Experiment, ED52, apparently died sometime over the weekend. The report of Anita's death came from science pilot Owen Garriott early Monday. Although NASA had no plans to bring back the spiders, it was announced several weeks ago that they would be returned if they could be kept alive. Arabella, the prime spider for the experiment, is still doing fine. Garriott explained from the (See ANITA on Page 4)

It's Library Trade Roundup time, baby!
Descender: Deluxe Edition Vol. 2 by Jeff Lemire, art by Dustin Nguyen -- I will be honest, I was reading this primarily because I love how Nguyen paints space in watercolors. Otherwise, I'd say that this was a fun, easy read. I don't think the plot ever really hooked me but I liked it well enough. I'll probably pick up Ascender (the sequal series) at some point which has a more fantasy vibe I believe, because while this wasn't one of my top comics, I certainly don't dislike it. And also I do like whenever Nguyen does the watercolors. (I am a little annoyed that it appears that Effie has contracted dead mom syndrome in the Ascender though because I really liked her.)
Dawn of X vol. 3 by various -- I am continuing to poke my way through these because it looks like my library has a good chunk of them. It's honestly kind of fun reading this in an approximation of publishing time (picking up a new volume of 6 #Xs every few weeks). Marauders continues to be one of my favorites. Fallen Angels continues to not work for me, and it's always fun when it calls back to previous comics and I get to go 'sure, why not, might as well happen' as opposed to actually knowing the callbacks. (I am being serious here. I do want to read more X-men comics but I am also down to just vibe.)
The Forged Vol. 2: Home Sweet Home by Greg Rucka and Eric Trautmann, art by Mike Henderson -- Look this is very by Greg Rucka like most of his original work. This comic is in the space marine genre which I am here for. I had read the first volume digitally, and I've come to the conclusion that this is just one of the comics I need to read physically because it's published in the same oversized format as Historia, and while the art doesn't have that insane level of detail, it still just breathes way better full sized whether than on my little tablet. I enjoyed this volume much more than the first and I think having it full sized was a big contribution (as well as the fact that I read the first volume while sitting in the back corner of a full car on the way to vacation which probably didn't help either.) This was also a downtime arc and I liked how it built out the characters and the world more rather than the more action focused first arc. Issue #9 is coming out next week I believe, so I'll be waiting for when the 3rd trade comes out and my library gets their hands on it to see how this next arc goes, but I'm looking forward to it!
Coffin Bound Vol. 1: Happy Ashes by Dan Watters, art by Dani -- I picked this up because I was curious about reading more of Watters' work, but I only ended up reading half of this before deciding it wasn't doing it for me. There were interesting elements, but I'm not sure what to say other than it just didn't click.
The Autumnlands Vol. 2 Woodland Creatures -- This continues to be right up my alley. I liked seeing more of the world and the implications of nuclear energy in this volume were very interesting. Seeing Dusty rub off on Learoyd, the plotline with the Galateas, and all the fun sci fi fantasy fusion of the world was all very fun and it left me sad that there's only 11 issues of this.
Sleepless Vol. 1 by Sarah Vaughn, art by Leila Del Duca -- Courtly intrigue/romance + Fantasy makes this quite different from a lot of the other comics I've been reading, but still very enjoyable. The artwork is beautiful for this (I love all the pretty dresses) and has a very nice atmosphere. I liked seeing Poppy trying to navigate the court after everything got shaken up on her and the worldbuilding was also interesting.

Penrose Song of the Day Day 29: Hawt Disco Loop by Keys N Krates
This song is. exactly what it says on the tin. And honest to god, one of the few reasons for a song to be 2 minutes long these days.
I actually really like Keys N Krates. I know them more familiarly by Pull Up (What's good Drag Race Canada), but Dum Dee Dum is. Fine (I know I'm Seinfeld is Unfunnying them here, but it comes with the territory unfortunately). But A Beat Tape for Your Friends is so. SO. I love it, what can I say.
Just the name of the album. A Beat Tape for Your Friends. I think the thing I like most about Electronic Music is the thing I like most about, well , frontier work in general. There's this sense of shared work, of iterating and riffing and creating off of. Nothing is new under the sun, but at the edges of what we can do we're always pushing to find it. New. Something that makes you wonder if there's more, further, more interesting.
So the idea that this album is specifically a beat tape for you to make your own songs with is just. So charming. I can't help but fall in love with it. The idea that your album is not only ready to be riffed, but is inviting it in name, structure, format. It's so much my jam. I love it.
Are all the Beats hits? Absolutely not, I find some of these to be so... slow? unsnappy? behind the beat? They feel offtempo sometimes, or off the mark. I don't know how else to describe it. It feels wrong in some indescribable way.
But the first track hits just right, trust me.
You know Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 1 by Calvin Harris? And how for an entire summer we had this album putting song after song on the charts. I love that Album. Feels, Heatstroke, Cashout, SLIDE of course Slide, I love Slide. There's something about this album that puts me in the Summer mood. The beats hit that summer vibe, even the down tempo stuff like Hard to Love feels like a sultry summer evening. Sticky with sweat and a bit nostalgic.
Hawt Disco Loop gets there, for me. It just. It delivers. This is a Dead Dove Do Not Eat moment but like. Hawt Disco Loop is... a hot disco loop. Crazy I know. It hits hot, summery, exciting, flushed. It hits disco with the funky, bouncy, wavy way it hits the track. And it's a 2 minute loop. I know it fades into Baby Don't Cry, but if you cut it right it probably loops perfectly. It's got dynamism, the loop is not just the same 8 bars (though those 8 bars are damn near perfect).
I get pretty charmed by a song that tells you what it is and then just does that thing. Know who you are and all that.
Anyways, sometimes just say what you're doing and deliver. You could be dead right now. Go listen to something you love.

UK’s FROGLORD Delivers Visual Spectacle for Kaleidoscopic New EP
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Artwork by Shane Horror
All Hail the Mighty FROGLORD! We've covered previous releases by the band and featured them in our Doomed & Stoned in England Vol. II compilation. Suffice it to say, we're believers!
Now the mysterious UK project is back with a new EP, and today Doomed & Stoned is giving you a first look 'n' listen with the music video premiere. LBTF((((or))))DBTS (2024), e.g. Live By The Fuzz or Die By The Slime is a three-track work where ominous tones mesh with tongue-in-cheek humor.
So, the gods decree, spoken unto thee Play it low and slow don't rush, live by the fuzz!
Our trip to the swamp begins with psychedelic blues rising like vapors in the warming sunlight. Welcome to "Live By The Fuzz," where guitars pulse like ripples on the water and we hear the sound of the hurdy-gurdy with mysterious Near-Eastern groans. You might be reminded of OM or Zaum in the first two minutes (and that's a good thing), but no worries if you're seeking a headbaning moment because it's coming with the all crash of an alligator jumping out of the bog to snag a heedless crane (at 2:38). Later, a blast beat and ferocious throaty voices take us to the edge of sanity -- or, if you're ready for it, enlightenment.
Cleanse yourself from pain, numb away the fear Hiding from impermanent endings growing near
Middle track "((((or))))" ushers us into the haze of the sun as the day dawns, and this time we're in ancient desert places and there's the addition of enchanting female vocalizations, pedal effects, and what sounds like the didgeridoo. Acolytes of the Froglord recite their purpose in hushed, drugged tones. Then the power of this mysterious force bursts forth with wild drums and intimidating roars (at 10:35). The song at last returns to those chill opening moments, taking us all the way to sundown.
In the swamp where darkness dwells A figure emerges, casting spells Creature arise, a presence so grand Deity of doom of this cursed land
Closing doomer "Die By The Slime" begins by asking Why do the living disturb the sleep of the dead? Indeed, why would one awaken such a fearsome creature of Old? It's a slow 'n' low ride, with boisterous outbursts of percussion, guttural singing, stinging guitar licks, damning riffage, and a cultish chorus. Strange rituals are afoot, and one imagines this gathering turning into a very messy bacchanal before long.
Meanwhile, the visual accompaniment is at various junctures meditative and disturbing, with trippy mirror effects and a veritable collage of hypnotic imagery. Hints of frogs (or tadpoles) lie around every corner. Maybe don't watch it on LSD!.
Froglord's 'Live By The Fuzz or Die By The Slime' (2024) to release this weekend, March 9th, on CD and cassette (get it here), as well as digital format (here).
Give ear...

SOME BUZZ
Since the dawn of time, mystics have long prophesied the coming of an ancient amphibian bestowed with death ray vision and ectoplasmic slime. Emerging from deep within The Mystic Swamp, Froglord arise bringing their unique blend of stoner groove and psychedelic doom. With face melting fuzz and foot stomping grooves, Froglord’s reign of amphibious terror shall begin.
Having released four full length albums in the last three years, Froglord returns once more. This time with a shorter three track EP, 'Live By The Fuzz or Die By The Slime.' Adopting a distinctly more blackened-psychedelic-doom sound for this release, Froglord once again showcase their ability to blend genres across their already vast discography.
Previously, Froglord records have been entirely recorded and produced as a one-person operation, however this EP sees collaboration with other artists, to bring in haunting cello and vocal acapella arrangements. 'Live By The Fuzz or Die By The Slime' is the perfect record for fans of Om, Conan, and Batushka.
Tumblr media
Formed during the pandemic as a one-man project, Froglord released their first EP in 2020, followed soon after by their debut album. To date Froglord has built up an extensive library of releases, including, 4 albums, 3 Eps, 1 split, 1 live album, and 2 singles. In 2021 just after the release of The Mystic Toad, Froglord developed into a 4-piece band as live venues began to reopen. Since then, Froglord has quickly gained a reputation for their commanding and theatrical stage performances.
Whilst Froglord's sound leans primarily toward stoner doom, they have been characterised for their genre-bending sound, with each album taking on its own distinct style, taking strong influences from psychedelia, prog, sludge, grunge, groove and blues; to deliver the tale of The Froglord through a concept-based discography.
Tumblr media
Currently, Froglord are set to release a single in the spring of 2024, written for the upcoming found footage horror film Frogman (dir. Anthony Cousins). As well as this original, the film also contains several older Froglord tracks.
Rooted also in environmentalism, Froglord has worked closely with Save The Frogs, the world’s largest amphibian-based conservation charity, raising over £2500 through "Save The Frogs" EP sales and campaigning, as well as £300 for the Human Dignity Trust.

Question one:
Freud, through an analysis of the German root words unheimlich and Heimlich concludes that an event is uncanny when it becomes overly canny.  Something that is canny is familiar, but this familiarity can be developed to a point where, though it originated from something familiar and is still recognizable, has a eerie sense to it as if something that “ought to have remained hidden and secret… [has] come to light”[1]. The uncanny (or the perversion of the canny) is a morbid anxiety that derives from the recurrence of something that was repressed- an infantile belief that belongs to the “phase of individual development corresponding to the animistic stage in primitive men”[2] or the vestiges of the narcissistic ego before its social reconstruction via the conscious[3]. In addition to having been repressed, the trigger of the uncanny could also be something that confirms a previous belief that has been surmounted, such as the beliefs of our primitive forefathers in the “omnipotence of thoughts, instantaneous wish fulfilments, secret power to do harm, and the return of the dead”[4].
For something to be truly uncanny, it must create a conflict between real and nonreal, new beliefs and surmounted beliefs. This contradiction leading to uncanniness is why Freud explains that many things in literature which aren’t uncanny (like fairytales) would be uncanny in actual life.[5]

[4] Freud, 40.1
[5] Freud, 403, 404.
Question two:
Society is the creator of personal neurosis, as the latter results from the fracturing of the self- the alienation of the spectacular I (the id) from the I because of societal pressures and cultural intervention[1]. Ego defense is the result of the isolation of the spectacular I and unleashes feelings and behaviors (anger, jealousy, and aggression) associated as more primitive and without the social mediation of desire[2].
Fanon expands upon this and talks specifically about hos society’s power structures within the context of race and colonialism dictate the neurosis (or rather abnormality) of anyone deemed the other (the non-white or non-Christian), as the mirror stage that Lacan proposes as the creator of the spectacular I is doomed to become fractured for the other when it is pointed out to them that their reflection is not in line with the white man. This causes an extreme inner conflict when the other has been raised on the collective catharsis (a channeling of the id) and signs of the white man[3].

[3] Frantz Fanon, “The Negro and Psychopathology”, in Black Skin White Masks, trans. Charles Lam Markmann (London: Pluto Press, 1986), 112.
Question three:
The marginalized and oppressed will undoubtably have their mirror stage broken, yet suffer the consequence of having formerly thought they belonged only to be othered by the white man and eventually themselves. Fanon summarizes the process of this self-realization in black scholars such as himself. The childhood of the young black child raised upon the media meant for the young white children ends with the “formation and crystallization of an attitude and a way of thinking and seeing that are essentially white”[1], but since the young black child is black he will learn that “he is a Negro… once he goes to Europe. It is here that this black youth will encounter the myth of his blackness and will from this point onward carry “the whole weight of his blackness”[2]. This is like when Lacan mentions the fracturing between the spectacular I and the social I, but there is a heavier weight in the social plane for these others (Fanon also continuously references Jewish myth and hatred) as an oppressive social myth is thrust upon their self-image. Since the youth grew up associating with whiteness, and yet the white structure insists upon their blackness, the black youth ends up hating blackness (or the White myth of blackness). A black youth who wishes to “climb up into society- white and civilized- tends to reject his family” as a black family structure is not viewed within white society as a good basis to become subjected to the white national structure[3]. The problem is that the youth is black and will never be allowed to transcend the myth (a betrayal of the white society) resulting in him being “forever in combat with his own image”[4]. This youth has chosen to ignore their skin color or project the myth of it onto others as the author consistently did in his youth onto the Senegalese[5]. There is the alternate path of absorbing the myth and oppressing oneself. He “selects himself as an object capable of carrying the burden of the original sin… He enslaves himself”[6]. The final solution to this imposition of oppressive culture on identity is to “rise above this absurd drama that others have staged”[7].
This anger, self-hatred, and self-oppression could be lessened or mitigated if one were to remove the original trauma of the deep fracturing of the image the youth created upon white media since this media not only betrays them when they are not allowed by white society to identify with the white heroes meant for white youth but perpetrates the black myth that will impose itself into their lives and cause their hatred of themselves for being unable to be the hero and forced to be the black man.

Reading Notes 6: Freud to Lacan to Fanon
Tumblr media
We look to Sigmund Freud’s “The Uncanny,” Jacques Lacan’s “The Mirror Stage as Formative of the Function of the I,” and Frantz Fanon’s “The Negro and Psychopathology” for our inquiry into the functions of psychoanalysis and subjectivity when examining visual texts.
Why do people call an experience or event uncanny, and what makes an occurrence that appears to be uncanny but is not uncanny?
What is the relation of personal neurosis to social passions?
In what ways are oppressed and marginalized viewers alienated when they are not or rarely represented?

Honeysuckle
pairing: Eddie Munson x GN!Reader
warnings: s4 vol 2 spoilers, language, minor description of injuries. eddie did not die, guys! (also i have little to no clue how hospital mail works. let alone in the 80′s, so forgive me for any inaccuracies)
summary: Eddie writes you a short letter from the hospital. It’s kind of cheesy.
Tumblr media
It arrived in your mailbox, maybe a day or two after Eddie was admitted to the hospital. A pressed white envelope, with your address on the front. Holding it up to your face, it smelled like new books and hand sanitizer.
You were still recovering from the events that had happened a few days prior. And so was everyone else, to an extent. Steve and Robin had dropped by a few times, and you were glad to see them, glad to see that they were holding up alright.
Though you and basically everyone else had tried to see Eddie, you were merely informed that he was alright; You just weren’t allowed to see him, not yet- and that caused you considerable frustration. But you were still really glad that he was okay.
But, now -- your heart hammered as you lowered your hands away from your face, looking down at the envelope.
The moment you entered your kitchen, you pretty much tore it open; Still taking care as to not actually damage the paper within it, but your patience couldn’t hold out for long. The tattered envelope itself was thrown carelessly onto the counter, as you unfolded the actual letter with shaky hands.
The image on the top left corner of the paper displayed proudly the logo and name of the hospital Eddie was in.
The rest of it was filled with the chicken scratch that you knew as Eddie’s handwriting, scrawled in pen. If it could even be called handwriting.
Your breath caught in your throat. You didn’t even bother sitting down at the counter, beginning to skim the badly formatted paragraphs as fast as you could, without pause...
--
Hey, sweets!
Dunno how long this letter’s gonna take to get to you. But I think I’m going to be here for at least a few days so I’m not that worried. Everything’s okay. I’m gonna have some scars after this is over for sure. That’s what my doctor tells me. He seems like a cool dude.
Anyway, I just wanna tell you that I miss you lots. The food here is ass. Doing normal tasks borders on life-threatening dangerous cause of my injuries. Even writing this is wearing me out a little. Thankfully I just lost enough blood to leave me tired and not dead. And I’ll gladly suffer through this part of the healing process if that means I can see you and everyone else again. I saw my uncle shortly after I woke up. We both cried a lot. It was annoying cause I couldn’t really wipe off my face. But I wasn’t really thinking about that at the time. Just about how glad I was to see him.
It’s kind of funny how near death makes you revalluate think about your life all over again. I’ve had a looot of time to think. About me. About school. About what really matters to me. And about how I’m gonna see if I can get that bat tatoo removed when I’m back to normal.
But on the topic of what matters to me, I think the thing I was most scared about while en route to the hospital was you. I know this is really fucking cheesy but you’re probably the best thing that’s happened to me. I didn’t want to think about my funeral and how you would react to my death. But it seemed like a very real senario scenario because I was slowly bleeding out. And it was absolutely fucking terrifying. I hate seeing you cry. I hate seeing you sad in general. It makes me feel like I’ve been a bad boyfriend because I really want to make you happy. And if I died I wouldn’t be able to do that anymore. Hell, I would forcefully come back from the dead like a motherfucking zombie if that I meant that I could make you smile again.
Listen, the second that I can I’m getting outta here and coming to you. Doc says it’ll be a little while but I can wait. I wanna see Dustin and Steve and well, everyone else. I’m so goddamn lonely! If you can, please write back. I miss you so fucking much. That sounds dramatic but it’s the truth.
I also miss my guitar. I miss listening to my music. I miss actually good food. And I miss all the guys from the Hellfire Club. I wonder if they heard about my current situation. I’m kinda divided whether or not I want them to know about my hospitilized bedridden state because I don’t want them to worry too much about it. They’re good guys.
I doubt the majority of the town would like to know that I’m alive. Fuck them though. Fuck it all. I’m alive and that’s what fucking matters in the end.
Look. If I could write twenty thousand pages of letters to you I would. If I could I would write millions of letters to you. But my hand is cramping up right now and I think I need to sleep because I haven’t got much rest over the past day or two.
Again, please write back. I miss you. I miss your smile and your laugh and your hugs n kisses and everything. I love you so much. You make me feel alive.
Love you lots,
Eddie

I KEEP FORGETTING TO ASK ABOUT THIS have u ever talked abt the alt swap au u have??? if u haven't i would VERY much like to hear abt it :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(dont mind the different fucking formats i switched from doing this on my phone to on my computer bc making tumblr posts on my phone is gross <////3 )
YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH I DONT THINK I HAVE YET!!!!!!!! i love this au i need to work on it more </3
so the basic idea i had for this au is that every alt from canon got swapped with a human.
here’s. the entire flow chart TNFNENRNMD
Tumblr media
it’s so fucking complicated who i swapped with who so. yeah you’re gonna need this xdddd
i do have some plot changes to canon too!!
cain and mabel (tv six and stanley) both live!!!!! however they have to carry a LOT of emotional baggage now, especially sonce cain spent three days of hell in his room and mabel now has wanted posters of her alternate everywhere.
they also run bps!!! their triplet seth and davis (intruder six and puppet) do the actual investigations, mabel handles most of the online shit, and cain is just the main leader. seth and davis also both live (davis bc fuck you, and seth bc. well DCFVGBHN) but ALS with extreme emotional baggage. seth being the obvious one because he's an alternate, but davis has a copy of him following him everywhere (though he actually is pretty harmless) and has to deal with the backlash of leaving seth at the house they were investigating.
dave still runs mandelatech, but it's mostly a hotspot for him to like. gain targets and stuff. adam and eve (yeah i call her eve in this au bc. evil ig DCFVGBHN) actually do the stealing of kids together as a tag team. they are almost never away from each other.
and yeah, we got lieutenant gabriel here too. however, he's just thatcher without the evil demon clone harassinh him. he still has the dead coworker (maria), however he wasn't as close to her as thatcher was to ruth in canon.
tiffany takes evelin's place here!!! however, she goes by lilith for au purposes. she's snarky, bitchy, and kinda hates her job and her boss. i think she still does find the tv in dave's closet, but dave is a liiittle more upfront about it while making excuses about it. and for au purposes, no she and seth do not date. they are definitely enemies tho from like high school, so yeah they do NOT like each other.
jonah does take stanley's place and works with adam sometimes, but he is actually very afraid of adam. he just kinda does what he says to not piss anyone off. ruth also becomes preacher, so she gets to be funky in vol 2. definitely fucks with seth's head a lil bit.
thatcher is actually just a cool guy!!! he wants to learn about people and be friends!!!! he's just a lil guy <333333 he hands around davis because he just found him interesting. they met before the events of vol 2, and they're kiiinda cool w each other. davis just doesn't want others knowing he has an alternate friend. i do feel like thatcher helps seth with accepting the fact that he's an alternate.
here’s some concepts i made for everyone!!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i love these designs w all my heart <33333 THEY JUST. LOOK SO COOL!!!!!!!

January 2022 Wrap-up
Trying a slightly different format this year. A little more info on the diversity within the books, and warnings for any triggers I find to be particularly central to the story or powerfully written. (I.e., not all possible triggers will be given, because triggers are as diverse as anything else and it’s not in my power to catch them all in any case.) If you’re interested in a book I’ve read and want to know more about triggers, rep, or anything else within it, please ask me!
One of my goals this year is to read more books off my physical TBR shelves, or at least make a record of how many I manage by taking a photo. The stacked books above came straight off my shelves. Reading and Rolling
Do you consider yourself a nerd? Are you a Dungeons & Dragons player or dungeon master? Or are you perhaps a fan of the lore or fantasy stories? Maybe you're just a fan of Stranger Things and you're generally curious about the game.
Well, if you've answered 'Yes' to any of those, then this selection of books just might catch your fancy.
Tumblr media
Some you might be familiar with; others might be something completely unexpected. Read them to inspire your DnD campaign, or maybe just entertain yourself!
Not sure what to pick? Well, why not decide with the roll of an 8-sided die? Happy reading!
(All of these are of course available at your library, assuming your library is LCPL. Yes, even the official manuals!)
1. Endless Quest: Into the Jungle by @mattforbeck
Get ready! As a Dwarf-cleric, you've been given a task to rescue an adventurer who holds a very important artifact. Can you survive the jungles of Chult? Trust me: in this land, everything's a danger to you, and even victory might not feel so sweet, either. I love choosing my path in these stories, but these ones feel heavy. Good luck! *Only available in audiobook format.
2. ORCS! (Vol. 1) by Christine Larsen
A fun, somewhat juvenile, little trade paperback (without the paper if you get the Hoopla version) featuring a family of orcs banished because of a squirrel-related incident following a frustrating adventure. They'll cross paths with monsters and humanoid races common in fantasy adventures, while winding up on new adventure tying in with another ongoing story.
3. Goblin Quest by @jimhines
Now this is a fun alternative to the classic D&D-esque tropes we're all familiar with. Here we've got a klutzy, near-sighted goblin named Jig who's essentially the runt of his community... a community of cannon-fodder for adventurers! Naturally, you'd think he'd be dead when living with these bullies (especially after crossing paths with a team of adventurers). Instead, he's now their “guide” on a mission that's all too likely to get him killed.
4. The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins by Clint McElroy & @careydraws
If you want some laughs, good art, a surprisingly well-thought-out story, and a even a little bit of seriousness, this might be the book for you. You've got a human warrior, a dwarf cleric, and an elf wizard being guided by the dungeon master on an adventure based on a particularly popular podcast. Too bad this trio is so incompetent! Think they can manage some basic “gerblins” before things get really challenging? See for yourself.
(Editor's note: More titles under the cut to save your dash, you're welcome)
5. Volo's Guide To Monsters
Want to learn about monster lore in the latest edition of D&D? Maybe create a community or dungeon? Perhaps you want to play as a monster? That's right! You can! This book is the perfect supplement for players and dungeon masters or a fun read fans of the fantasy genre.
6. The Monsters Know What They're Doing by Keith Ammann
Are you a new dungeon master setting up your first campaign or maybe a veteran DM looking for ideas to spice up your latest campaign? Do you want to make your enemy encounters more than just a hack 'n slash? Then this book just might be for you. You don't have to figure out how to get inside the monsters' heads; Keith Ammann does it for you!
7. Rick and Morty vs. Dungeons & Dragons by Patrick Rothfuss
Were you expecting this? I know I wasn't! You're gonna get a lot of laughs and maybe learn a bit about the history of D&D and its past versions in this graphic novel. It might even give you some campaign ideas, or perhaps just an appreciation for how different players play the game.
8. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Do you have a character that doesn't quite fit standard D&D mechanics? Are you player or dungeon master who perhaps favors more homebrew-styles in your campaigns? Then this might be for you. It's a more recent entry in the franchise that offers optional, reasonable variations of rules for playing, including stat bonuses, class features, and a campaign.

12 Anti LO Asks
1. arent some of the copies of that lo book upwards of $40 dollars if not more? like bare minimum ive seen it at least $20 even for the paperback but it goes way up for the hardcovers (tho the second vol already had a pretty massive markdown by what i saw on amazon which was ... weird). wt readers flip out over paying a few cents for fast pass, why would they buy the same thing they already read for free for a much higher price thats not even formatted correctly and kept all the typos?
2. i swear LO is making me into a pearl clutching nun. I get its trying to be ~pro sexuality~ or whatever but its so hamfisted in trying to do so and everyone and everything is so horny for??? reasons?? like no one talks or acts like this.
3. the way rachel "designs" characters deadass looks like how NFTs work. she just uses the same template and changes one or two things and calls its unique.
4. Does anyone know a comic where Persephone ACTUALLY chooses to go to the Underworld? Because LO and Ficlets still has her be kidnapped and Punderworld has it just be an accident she ended up there.
5. i think whats annoying me too about all these flashbacks is that im not sure whats actually true?? which i think is maybe the point but even when we see it from h or p's POV it comes across as the worst option? like helios' version actually made persephone look better than reality, hermes' flashback gave her personality and set their relationship better, meanwhile we get it from hxp and hades is just a neglectful ass to a literal child meanwhile persephone just looks like an idiot? like?? 💀
6. The biggest thing to me is these ancient stories don't belong to us, and modern "retellings" are not the "natural progression" of mythology, it's just people taking known stories and more often than not just making fanfic with the creator's biases. LO is allowed to exist, but Rachel is not "keeping the mythology alive" or "adding to the canon" as her fans claim. LO doesn't even fit a loose retelling, and it is not nor will ever be as legitimate as the actual texts. Sorry to be harsh but 🤷🏿
7. The way my skin crawled at the Niobe part… that’s so dumb if RS wants to portray Artemis as good and Apollo as bad why would you choose that myth like 😭 “hey Artemis only killed 6 instead of 7 like her awful brother” how does that even make sense??? Also ofc cutting so much of the original myth like-
From OP: Yeah, it doesn’t even make sense because we hear Leto is a sun goddess in LO but not the goddess of motherhood.
8. i dont get why all of a sudden now persephone wants to be queen? off of what? first its set up on she had goals to get her degree and have freedom, but now she just wants to be his wife? why? second, even her idea of making elysium is just her trying to relive her own guilt, not that she actually cares about the dead. her motives are out of nowhere and purely selfish, which the latter would be fine if LO didnt set up one set of goals but drop them to be hades' wife instead with no reasoning.
9. i think the biggest issue with this trial plot line is one) so dragged out, who cares, but two: hades is both leading up and during this whole thing has been so cartoonishly awful that i dont even care if he points out something right. a broken clock is also right twice a day, but that doesnt mean it still isnt broken. not to mention its very easy to make him look "right" when rachel purposely makes everyone else so irrational/wrong that he looks correct in comparison. that isnt a win, actually.
-----FP Spoilers/Mention-----
10. FP SPOILERS// Hades basically tells Persephone that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger in reaction to learning about her sexual assault and that really rubs me the wrong way because that kind of trauma doesn't make a person stronger, it damages you and as you heal you become stronger in spite of what happened so idk that whole diamond pep talk just irked me idk if anyone else feels the same way
11. Fp) Helios (thought it was Hera at first lol) she gives you HOMEMADE birthday cards as a bribe each year how dare you report a homicide she committed... Of course now we will get to know the real story is completely different and Perse is an angel who allowed those poor mortals to duebabd Minthe co. are such a horrible people for lying. She can't do anything wrong. Also, seriously? Russell? Such a Greek sounding name again.
12. I shouldn't be as annoyed as I am that episode 184 was basically more pointless stalling, it's honestly just a trend at this point. Is it bad that I actually laughed when Helios told Persephone that her birthday cards ain't shit? The way she actually tried to guilt-trip him for reporting her murdering people by saying "bUt I mAdE you Birthday Cards!!11" and him njust not having that shit. Beautiful. Also, as much as I was never a fan of Smythe's demonizing of Apollo, I'm not sure I like the direction she seems to go in now, namely the implication that Apollo's predatory behavior is really all Leto's fault because she encouraged it. It's yet another female character Smythe villainized just so Persephone could be the most perfect woman of them all in contrast to all these manipulative harpys on Olympus.
