Not A Book Friday

Unfortunately this podcast from 2019 only wound up having 5 episodes (technically 6, but I could never get the 6th to download or stream properly). But, whew, those episodes were amazingly awesome.
There was my favorite, the episode about Clara Schumann and her awesomeness, not to mention her very complicated relationship with her husband Robert Schumann. An episode about the equally if not more complicated relationship between Richard Strauss and his wife Pauline (whew and wow to that one). There was the episode about Tchaikovsky. There were things in there that I most definitely didn’t realize about him. As well as an episode about his fellow Russian Shostakovitch. And, the final episode was about Beethoven, his deafness, and more.
The host was engaging, the topics were interesting, and I'm definitely sad that it only lasted 5 episodes. That does, unfortunately, seem to be something that happens to the American Public Media podcasts that I like. Julie’s Library seemed to have one season, said ‘hey were going to do a second’, and, well, definitely hasn’t. But… as I said, the episodes that are there are great, and definitely worth a listen.

maybe its cus im on my period but forever thinking about Moonshine holding Deadeye in her arms as he died, as he returned to the crick. Deadeye's body being a prison cell for him for decades - centuries - until moonshine waltzed into town, reconnected him with his family, culture, and love for life. And when its time, Deadeye looks at Moonshine and finds himself in the crick again, his prison cell decomposed by mushrooms

Will is actually really into morbid curiosities and vulture culture. He likes bones, alright? And he already canonically listens to true crime podcasts. I bet when he originally saw Nico he was just excited for the possibility of someone he could talk with about bones and myths and murder cause there’s certainly no place for that in the Apollo Cabin. That’s also how he and Lou Ellen became good friends, because Hekate is also a big symbol in death (triple goddess of life, death and rebirth) but her fixation is on mushrooms and moss, so they spend hours talking about natural decomposers. He’s able to name any bone, human or animal, and she can name most non-flower plants, ESPECIALLY fungi, so they have a mutual respect bond. Both of them know random facts about really niche beetles and other insects, especially if they are also decomposers. This slowly transitions to include Cryptids and folklore legends, it’s their favourite. They have plans to go to the mothman festival together sometime and they’re both dragging Cecil along (and eventually Nico when Will and him get together). They’re definitely the kinds of best friends to road trip and go camping or ghost/cryptid hunting in the woods. (They’re kind of sad once they realise some of those myths might actually just be greek monsters considering their demigod heritage and how much has already proven to be real.)

When Narcissus says “you,” he is aware that there is nobody else on the other side of the mirror. “You” is a synonym for “I.” Narcissus consciously, “willfully,” romantically continues to treat his reflection as another being in spite of the truth. He allows “reason and order [to] decompose” so that he can knowingly dive into the delusion. The story is more than a “failure of self-knowledge.” Narcissus achieves self-knowledge, but it doesn’t matter: enlightenment can’t save him. Narcissus knows, and he loves anyways.

I once listened to a fantasy podcast during which heroes were performing a dark magic ritual in the bowels of the earth to change their physical forms to infiltrate another races kingdom. The description was really brutal focused on bone cracking and skin bursting when they were decomposed and made anew. And the only thing I could think about was - hey, I kinda wish my bones broke and skin bursted and I was reshaped into something different through ancient dark goddess magic. Then it hit me
There are signs kids

Brains & Broadcast: The Undead Podcast
ZOMBIE HOST #1 (Grimothy): "Welcome back, fellow decomposing listeners! This is Brains & Broadcast, the show where we, the undead, break down the absurdities of human existence—while breaking down ourselves, of course."
ZOMBIE HOST #2 (Mildred the Mangled): "Today’s topic: Humans these days! They’re walking around like they OWN the planet. Honestly, the audacity! Grimothy, tell them what happened to you last week."
Grimothy sighs, part of his jaw falling off mid-exhale.
Grimothy: "Okay, okay. So, I was shambling down Main Street, looking for a good brain snack—don’t judge, you do what you gotta do. I see this guy on his phone, totally oblivious. I groan loudly, real dramatic, like classic zombie horror film level. And guess what he does?"
Mildred: "Oh no. What did the fool do?"
Grimothy: "He turns to me, sighs, and says ‘Ugh, another influencer trying to get my attention.’ Then—THEN—he pulls out his phone and starts recording me! My existential horror turned into his content!"
Mildred gasps, a few fingers falling off in shock.
Mildred: "Wait wait wait—did he tag you?"
Grimothy: "I checked. NO TAG. He just wrote ‘Zombie sighting in Ohio lol #SpookyVibes #MondayMood’ on Instagram. I have NO online presence. At this point, I am just another uncredited spooky side character in a human’s life."
Mildred: "Absolutely tragic. Humans these days don’t even respect the undead grind."
Grimothy: "Right?! Meanwhile, they’re out here drinking ‘brain-boosting smoothies’ when I CAN’T EVEN GET ONE REAL BRAIN. Make it make sense!"
Mildred: "Disgraceful. Anyway, stick around—we have a segment later where we review the best human screams of the week!"

Jolie's thoughts on
The Retired Colourman (Sherlock & Co. podcast)
This case, in ACD's original version, is the opposite of a favourite of mine. It's somewhat pedestrian, doesn’t have particularly memorable characters, doesn’t have particularly memorable deductions, and the only memorable dialogue or interaction is Holmes famously enumerating all the ways Watson should have used his charm to get the local ladies hot and bothered. Oh boy, that just changed a lot!
Lilian Barker - In ACD canon, Barker is Sherlock Holmes's "friend and rival", the other gifted and clever private investigator that just randomly pops up out of nowhere, never mentioned before and never mentioned again after… Weird, just weird. I prefer this Barker who finally gets a personality and a narrative function (other than being a painfully transparent red herring)!
Loved Sherlock going ballistic when she turns out not to have called the police, though. And how he keeps hating her even when she provides some useful evidence. (Thank you for not letting her actually solve the case though. I was worried there for a moment.)
Another plus: The deduction that the bad guy has a prosthetic leg goes absolutely nowhere in ACD canon but suddenly it becomes an important point!
Interesting dynamic between Sherlock and Inspector MacKinnon, too. Either Sherlock has realised that the police are not always idiots or MacKinnon is a very special person, in which case I want to know more about him and how he knows and why he trusts Sherlock. And how he managed to sell Sherlock & Co. to his superiors as a "third party investigation unit"!
Details I liked:
Did it take anyone else an age to realise that Amber Lee = Amberley? I‘m so slow.
John nattering away about low emission zones for a reason.
"The plot is thickening like a thick, evil… soup."
The chess metaphors! In ACD, the chess aspect just goes nowhere, except to serve as an explanation why the miserly, unsociable bad guy sometimes has a visitor at all. Great use of it here!
Sherlock "strangling" Mr Lee when he makes fun of John's injury, and then it turns out a pretty nifty move to secure evidence. (Or was it? Interesting question, hen or egg? I guess we'll be in sweet unknowing agony about this forever.)
Mariana = Mari? Sweet but uncomfortable at the same time, for obvious reasons.
I do love the confirmation that Mariana co-owns the business and is not just an employee, though.
"Don’t say juices, it’s a family show." - "You just said fuck."
John taking his frustrations out on the wall with a sledgehammer.
And then oh boy again for how dark this whole case is. Even Sherlock actually being really considerate and protecting Mariana from trauma took a pretty creepy form. Honestly, the way he said, "Follow the thought. Don‘t run away from it. It’s natural to be scared when you know what you'll find at the end of it.", I honestly expected for a moment that he was talking her into looking at the bodies, just from the tone.
I also can’t help feeling that that moment in the attic would have belonged to John, not to Mariana. I mean, yeah, she did deserve to reap the fruit of her earlier clever deductions about the water pipe system, and Watson is absent from the final resolution in ACD’s story, too… But I‘m not sure I can ever get over the fact that John did not hear Sherlock say "check mate" in that voice.
Reality check: The police are incompetent if they missed both the walled-off extension/basement and the walled-off part of the attic after a week of searching, and if they even considered taking the bad guy to court without having done that first.
Also reality check: Like with The Cardboard Box, straight up cruel and unimaginative domestic murder hits too close to home for me to be ideal entertainment, but then Joel Emory absolutely gets points for realism. What Sherlock and Mariana find at the end of the case - two human bodies having decomposed in water for a week - is straight out of ACD canon. The podcast version just calls the horror by its name, instead of elegantly glossing over it, and gets kudos from me for that.
Check out this amazing art for the episode by @abstractfrog (Sherlock and Mariana), and @subtlehysteria 's fantastic John with a sledge hammer!

@nosebleedclub prompt day 4: Rafflesia
For the record I, the author, am aware that the corpse flower, which blooms once every seven years, is a different genus from rafflesia, but I don't think my OC Spencer knows the difference
The biggest flowers on Earth look like rotting meat. To attract pollinators, Spencer remembers from some pop-science podcast or instagram graphic. She has a vague notion that they only bloom once in a lifetime, that it’s a rare enough event that people will travel to other countries to witness it, primal disgust overridden by curiosity. It’s hard to imagine fairies doing that, Spencer muses, watching the dance floor from a safe distance. The natural world here is suffused with their magic, in ways both subtle and dramatic. Trees grow in the shape of benches, flowers bloom in the colors of the Court. The carrion and decomposers must exist, but out of sight. Everything must be pleasing to the senses.

“I’m just– tired,” William says. “I am so very tired, Vynce. I have, like, zero energy. The idea of getting up right now and doing something other than just decomposing makes me want to peel all my skin off.” “Oh, ew,” Vyncent mutters under his breath, but William doesn’t have time to react before he’s shifting again, coming into William’s field of vision. His face is earnest and kind when he says: “Okay, you feel gross. Let me help you.” (or, Vyncent helps William take a shower. Even the dead need to stay clean.)
thank you to the lovely @arachnid-party who drew a sweet af ghostknife comic and then gave me permission to write a fic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go check out the comic linked in the notes!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I'm Ben! And I'm happy to be here.
I'm a neuroscientist by training and also by trade (though these days I care mostly about stem-cell epigenetics). When I'm not doing science, I'm probably thinking about stories, the ways we tell them, and how the act of storytelling structures our lives in ways both obvious and imperceptible.
You're probably here because I make games. I've been writing/designing/illustrating/laying out games and supplements for a little over a year now! Here's a few of them, in no particular order:
DO/OMED. Explore the disintegrating landscape outside of a utopian domed city, and discover the nature of the secretive Namesake Project. Inspired by Annihilation plus a pinch of Jewish tradition, written and designed by me, based on RP Deshaies Breathless system.
The Cross Stitch. In this self-contained folk horror adventure, you'll explore a missing town, meet its unusual denizens, and uncover the dark mystery at its heart. Written, illustrated, and designed by me, for MÖRK BORG (but adaptable to the system of your choice). It's also my only project currently available in print.
Hillbrook Glen: Manifest your Dreams. Attend an exclusive, luxurious wellness workshop in the Adirondack Mountains, and bring your dreams to life. No, literally, your dreams are alive. And they're hungry. Written and designed by me, as the first of a 4-part series currently in progress.
Public Access. In this game of nostalgia and analog horror from Jason Cordova & The Gauntlet, you'll investigate strange mysteries surrounding TV Odyssey, a notorious TV station from the '80s and '90s that disappeared without a trace. I contributed a very tiny bit of writing to this, but mostly I did the layout and graphic design.
Decomposer. Take on the role of a worm, a fungal spore, a seed, or some other tiny creature, and decompose the remains of a dead god into a new world. Written and designed by me. (And it's free!)

I also have a few upcoming projects to look forward to:
Hillbrook Glen: Follow your Bliss. Explore a shifting meditation garden and face the branching paths your life could have taken in this post-it crawl adventure. Just be careful not to lose yourself. Coming September 2023 (I hope).
The Silt Verses RPG. In this TTRPG adaptation of the popular horror/weird-fiction podcast The Silt Verses, you'll traverse the Peninsula, hunting down stray deities while exploring your own complicated relationship with unsanctioned faiths. It's written by Gabriel Robinson & Jason Cordova, and I'm doing graphic design & layout. Coming soon.
Triangle Agency. As an employee of the Triangle Agency, it's your job to make sure the world doesn't collapse into chaos. You'll go on missions to apprehend dangerous anomalies while wielding anomalous powers of your own, battling bureaucratic nightmares along the way. TA was a runaway success on Kickstarter earlier this year, and I'm writing a mission for The Vault collection and laying out the book(s)!
Ex Nihilo Ad Nihilum. People vanish every day in the City of Y. But this one - this one is different. Or so your contact claims. Search for a missing scientist and uncover a potentially world-ending conspiracy in this surreal noir horror adventure for CY_BORG. Coming in the fall.
While you wait for those projects, you can keep up with what I'm working on via my newsletter or the Foresight Studio discord server.
So, hello tumblr! I hope something I make resonates with you.
