15 Days BL Challenge the Quadriquel

48. If you could switch a BL actor pairing to a different production company, who would you move and to which production company? 

Change 2561

I would move FortPeat to Change 2561. I think they could really soar outside of MAME's Universe. I think they could really have fun with some of the crazy plots Change comes up with and honestly I think they have the range and also we wouldn't have to compromise on the high heat they're so excellent at. I feel like the sky would be the limit for them at Change.

(Also think FirstKhao would have fun there too)

Idolfactory

I would move OffGun to Idolfactory and maybe they can finally shake off those university based plots that GMMTV LOVES to give them. I think Idolfactory has unique plots that would challenge OffGun and they could really explore genres outside of comedy. We saw how amazing they were in Not Me, but imagine them together in fantasy (we know Gun can do it but can Off?) Also I think we would like to see OffGun crank up the heat, they're 30 let's see it! And maybe having such seasoned actors would motivate Idolfactory writers to stick the landings for their series.

(Maybe MaxNat could slide over too)

Deehup

Move PoddPapang to DeeHup. They would be our best bet to get our mature Yaoi we so crave. I think they would easily be casted as mains for either a period drama or even a single dad type of thing. DeeHup would deliver us that mature, emotional, and relatable content we want from Podd and Papang.

(And they should take EarthMix with them)

MeMindY

Crazy enough, I'd move GemFourth to MeMindY specifically so they could get some messiness under their belts. They are so cookie cutter (which I know is about to change) and I know it's because they are so young but damn I'll bet Gem and Fourth would devour a sloppy, messy uni series. Though I do worry about how MAME likes to incorporate assault. If we could do messy without the inclusion of assault then we would have a 10/10 series. We got Wedding Plan so I know it can be done.

Open Label

Let's move BounPrem and BossNoeul to Open Label alongside DaouOffroad and Film Thanapat. BounPrem need to move to a company where they would get consistent attention and decent plots. They are so amazing together but so far have been given nothing but subpar plots and then pushed to the back burner. Their fanbase is way too big to be left hanging so damn frequently. And like FortPeat, BossNoeul need to be released from MAME's universe to really spread their wings. Boss has gotten a little taste with some work with Mandee and from what I've seen he's good. I think BossNoeul would be able to get some fresh new storylines but also keep with heat.

I was refraining myself from saying anything about Kidnap, because I believe that if I don't have anything good to say then better not say anything at all, but yesterday seemed to be the last straw for a good chunk of the fandom.

Things are getting heated at Twitter and BlueSky, it was somewhat reassuring seeing that my issues with the show were finally being brought up by the majority, because I don't know what gives that GMM' shows get so much leeway, had Kidnap been a DeeHup or BoC show I can assure you that the tune playing would be very different.

Poor production value, continuity errors, undercooked script, lazy directing and wooden acting have all marred GMM first BL series on Netflix Latam (it's also available on NF SEA).

This has been my biggest gripe, these things matter. Having such uneven show as the greeting card of the genre is terrible, at Netflix Latam the only other BL show standing is I Can't Reach You (which thankfully enough will soon receive the company of Love Is A Poison).

I want to see the genre thrive and find new audiences, but Kidnap won't contribute much to that. I also avoid talking about it because GMM has it's very own fandom, people willing to ignore all the mal-practices of that company under the excuse of trying to "support the actors" that they don't want to see their "faves getting affected by a poor reception".

These fans should be worried about the terrible script these actors are getting. I'm genuinely sorry for Ohm, you can tell that he is doing his utmost best but there isn't anything there for him, the script and overall production keeps failing him at every turn, it's even worse for Leng who got co-lead with little baggage, he tries but doesn't have the material to do much (and has to deal with that mess off-screen).

2025 QL Anticipations, Wishes, and Resolutions

After wrapping up my top 10 list for 2024, it's time to look ahead to next year with my most-anticipated upcoming series, series I'm planning to catch up on, and some resolutions.

Top 5 anticipated series in 2025

Us (pilot trailer) / dir. Fon Kanittha (GMMTV) / adaptation / rumored for January: Emi Thasorn had her Mark Pakin moment last year—she was literally everywhere (Last Twilight, Beauty Newbie, Wandee Goodday, The Rebound, The Trainee, and currently in Perfect 10 Liners), and that has built up my anticipation for her first leading role. I don’t actually have super high expectations for the storytelling, as this is an adaptation of an author with certain weaknesses, but I’m hoping the simplicity of the plot allows the acting to shine, and I’m enticed by the potential of two fresh GL pairings in EmiBonnie and ViewMim (if they do end up as a side couple).

Khemjira (pilot trailer) / dir. Ron Patarapon + Aoftion Kittipat (Mandee Works) / adaptation / currently filming: I am not the biggest fan of Domundi/Mandee projects, but this feels a little different in scope and flavor, with the supernatural horror elements and a largely rural setting. Also, I can’t lie, I'm excited for the combo of KengNamping and TleFirstone. I have a weird little fascination with the entire [vague handwaving] of DMD The Friendship and TleFirstone are my third-gen blorbos; I suffered through the entirety of Secret Love just to see if they kissed good (they did). Also, with the musical talent here, if we don’t at least get a banger OST out of this show I’m going to be so mad.

Knock Out (pilot trailer) / dir. Tee Bundit (Deehup/WeTV) / adaptation / recently did fitting: Boxing/martial arts settings are gonna be everywhere in 2025 (there are at least two more QLs that I can think of), but the combination of Deehup production quality, WeTV je ne sais quoi, and a promising new acting pair in GunNice is just delicious, especially after seeing that pilot trailer. Tee Bundit excels in not only drawing out excellent physical intimacy but also making show settings feel lived-in, and the action scenes in Jack & Joker were pretty decent, so I'm excited to see how he brings a boxing gym with ties to the mafia underworld to life.

Love You Teacher (pilot trailer) / dir. Dome Jarupat (Parbdee/GMMTV) / original / script being written: Boy, was this ever the most willfully misinterpreted pilot trailer from the entire GMMTV25 event. This post beautifully sums up most of my thoughts on that matter, but I want to add that after two episodes of watching PerthSanta elevate the milquetoast Perfect 10 Liners with impeccable chemistry, my excitement for them in these specific roles has grown exponentially. Give me the sunshine/grumpy dynamics with a poignant exploration of devotion and care! And we know p'Dome will bring the poignancy.

Girl Rules (pilot trailer) / dir. Jojo Tichakorn (Moongdoo/GMMTV) / original script / most likely late 2025?: p'Jojo is bringing the gospel of messy gays to the sapphics this year, and I will be seated front-row for it. I already know that Milk Pansa playing a stone cold casanova bitch is going to be A Problem for me, and I am on my knees begging for some honest-to-god hatesex or spite-fucking, just give me a truckload of whatever they have going on:

(I didn't include series like Cranium, Ticket to Heaven, and Love of Silom, which have either already been slated for 2026 or could go either way. Or series that simply don't have enough info, like 8 Hours. Ggurhggh I'm hoping the last two I listed above make the cut...)

5 series to catch up on

Pluto: I watched the first ep and definitely wanted to continue, but the series ended up on the back burner due to time. I also thought it would be a good one to binge due to the melodrama of the storyline. From the gifsets I've seen, I'm in for some good fucking food.

Century of Love: Honestly, I'm kind of looking forward to DaouOffroad's next project a little more (I think they are going to thrive in the bodyguard dynamic), but I know I'll want to watch something lakorn-ish at some point, and CoL will scratch that itch.

Reverse 4 You: This seemed to fly under the radar in fandom circles, but the concept sounded interesting (it has speculative elements like time manipulation and precognition) and by all accounts the acting was really solid. I also have Apple My Love (Kongthup + Ormsin lead = winning combo in my world) on the list but this one is just a little more compelling so it will take precedence.

Blueming + Where Your Eyes Linger (movie version probably): After losing my mind over LFCT, I promised myself to finally finish off the Hwang Daseul cinematic universe this year. 🫡

The On1y One: I prefer to binge Taiwanese series, so it's nice to have this in the back pocket for a slow weekend or whatever. See Your Love is making me remember how much the pacing of TWBLs drives me nuts sometimes, so we'll see when I'm in the mood again...

2025 resolutions

Prioritize GL! This might be obvious from the series I mentioned above lol. I did such a bad job of this last year, but luckily GL seems to be a growing slice of the pie. The things I'm looking forward to: new pairings, messier dynamics (GIRL RULES), and hopefully more original scripts (GIRL RULES!!!!) as well. Pipe dream: CAN I GET ONE (1) NON-FEMME SAPPHIC CHARACTER PLEASE...

Watch a series outside of the big four markets (Thailand, Japan, Korea, Taiwan). There are a couple of completed Filipino series on my watch list, so it's just about making time for it.

Write more consistently about QL. I did participate in Tumblr discussions this year, albeit spottily, and I'd like to do it more! I tend to put my thoughts in tags rather than adding onto a reblog or commenting on a post, so let's see if I can break that habit and contribute more directly.

❗️ The upcoming Thai BL 4 Minutes has been announced to air in early 2024. One of the main actors, Bible W., disclosed that shooting will begin in October and run until December. What Did I Watch: #35

This week, I thought a lot about the word 'forever' and it did sound scary. Infinite. No stopping. Just go on and on.

I think I'm going to stop watching Hidden Agenda. Because I never convinced there was a hidden agenda. I genuinely think it's going to pull up a plot twist a la David Fincher. But nope. No surprises either.

Am I hoping too much?

Perhaps.

Besides the missing hidden agenda (for now, who knows for the next 2-3 episodes), I have a tiny bit problem with how Dunk recited his dialogue. It wasn't bad acting per se, but it sounded to me like he read a script. The way he uttered words by words, especially during banter with Joong, or when their characters having overlapping sentences, it just didn't come out natural. Dunk particularly slow down his words so that Joong can caught up to him and making it as it seemed that he was interrupting him. And that happened so many times. I was like, in real world, no one ease off their chatter unless they were finishing their speaking or they predicted their listener about to interfere. I mean if you're engaging a very hefty conversation, would you care about your listener that much so that you could predicted that they were about to against you? I don't buy it.

It's like you have a script and yet you chose to let out words as if you read it and not trying to make it as sound as you in your normal fucking life. It was weird. I got agitated just by watching people speaking like they were in first grade's play.

I'm angry for the little things, in particular towards Thai BL. The lack of continuity between the scenes. The illogical choices in set designs (remember there were so many candles during the sex scene in La Pluie? yeah, what's the point?). Plenty of unnecessary characters to make up the episode. The shortage of adult stories where adult themes presented such as paying mortgage, or maybe sucked at your job, instead of having everyone just to making out in order to push the agenda of being adult. It's not adult. Having sex is basic necessities, even in high school they can do that. You know there is a life outside love. Show me.

So when Laws of Attraction came to my life, I was like, finally. Goodness gracious. Yassssss. I want to see people going to work and kick some asses and love is just a bonus. Arggggghhhhh.

It was on the same path as Modu which is great. It wasn't mind blowing-ly fantastic. But it was crazy and full of imperfect characters and not trying to be some pick-me girls. Like it's not "well I'm hot, I do smoke, I'm bad and I'm proud of it" kind of attitude. Charn is questionable and bad in a very messed up way, which is awesome. He doesn't want to be fix even in the name of love. Because if he wanted to be fix I hope he's going to psychiatrist.

My only beef is that it was very lakorn-y. It was so damn lakorn to point I laughed pretty hard at some scenes while watching it. The singing at the market? The cringiest thing I've ever watched. Crap, why did they have to do this?

At last, I'm about to share you a song and feasibly one of the main reasons I'm looking forward to Friday.

Please DeeHup for the love of god, you cannot mess this up. YOU CANNOT FUCKING THIS UP. Because you already have the base, which is an extraordinary story. The color palette and cinematography are top notch. The music is freaking wonderful. For the first time in my life of watching Thai BL, finally a good sound mixing. One of the fundamentals of visual media is a fucking sensible sound mixing. It is essential thing and can be very annoying if production just set aside that in favor of what, handsome people who cannot act. The hell.

I Feel You Linger in the Air is wet dream for technical maniac like me. Audiophile in me pleased. Cinephile in me satisfied. Acting? Come on, it's starring the great Nonkul.

Furthermore, the first 5 minutes of this show, is a cinema. The sound that comes out of it. The creeks on the stairs. The muffled bedroom voices. The eerily atmosphere created by a haunting score. Darling, sound can do wonder.

Sometimes I never cared on how story unravel before our eyes. And it's kinda sad for me because everyone having their own interpretation about stories, compositions, and frames. But rarely talking about sound and how critical it is to storytelling. Sound can tell you so many different things before characters uttered their words. Sound is the door between realism and fallacy. Good sound is able to make a visual presentation become such an immersive experience. Bad sound is a joke, a laughable attempt to making me trust to everything you presented.

Okay! I just watched the pilot for KnockOut the Series

And here are the things I noticed:

Oh they fell onto the floor together. This boxer dude is leaning in and he don't give af that there are people around.

The description I saw said "enemies to lovers" but I don't see an enemy in sight. They are vibing hard right out the gate. The hero is def mentally sexing this boy up every time he sees him.

Oil rubbing on the thighs with wandering hands in the middle of the crowded gym is crazy. Having the damsel lube up your abs while y'all keep intense eye contact is also quite insane!

Oh there's a sickly parent in debt.

Mafia? Of course there's mafia. Mafia in sports is totally a thing now.

Ja is back (looking fine af) with a new partner (Tae, you'll know him from a bunch of WabiSabi stuff). And back in uni in a cohabitation trope BL givign TharnType vibes. (True: Durian is the real weapon.) Looks like there's both abuse and bullying in this, so triggers all round.

No date as yet but that long and substantial of an actual (not teaser) trailer makes it seem like filming has wrapped, so we can probably expected it sooner rather than later.
