stock market basics: p/e ratios, dividends, market cap explained 📈⋆.ೃ࿔*:・💻
you think the stock market is gambling or too complicated to understand. you hear terms like "p/e ratio" and "market cap" and your brain shuts off. you avoid investing because you think you need to be a finance expert.
understanding basic stock terms isn't that hard once someone explains them in normal language.
Tumblr media
what stocks actually are ⭑𓂃
when you buy stock, you own a tiny piece of a company. if the company does well, your stock value goes up. if it pays dividends, you get cash payments for owning shares.
you're not gambling - you're buying ownership in real businesses that make real money.
market cap = company size 📊 ʚɞ
market capitalization is stock price × number of shares outstanding. tells you how much the entire company is worth according to the stock market.
large cap (over $10 billion), mid cap ($2-10 billion), small cap (under $2 billion). larger companies are usually more stable but grow slower.
p/e ratio = price vs earnings ✧˚ ༘ ⋆。
price-to-earnings ratio compares stock price to company's annual earnings per share. if p/e is 20, you're paying $20 for every $1 of annual earnings.
lower p/e might mean the stock is cheap, higher p/e might mean investors expect growth. compare p/e ratios within the same industry.
dividends = cash payments to owners 💻 ⭑𓂃
some companies pay dividends - cash payments to shareholders, usually quarterly. dividend yield shows annual dividend as percentage of stock price.
4% dividend yield means you get $4 per year for every $100 of stock you own, regardless of whether stock price goes up or down.
growth stocks vs dividend stocks ʚɞ
growth stocks: companies reinvesting profits to grow faster, usually don't pay dividends. potential for higher stock price gains but more volatile.
dividend stocks: mature companies that pay regular dividends. more stable but slower growth potential.
why individual stocks are risky 📈 ✧˚ ༘ ⋆。
company-specific risks: bad management, competition, industry changes, scandals. even good companies can have bad years or decades.
timing risk: you might buy at high prices and sell at low prices. requires research and luck to pick winning stocks consistently.
index funds vs individual stocks ⭑𓂃
index funds own hundreds or thousands of stocks automatically. if some companies fail, others succeed. you get average market returns without picking individual winners.
much less risky than betting on individual companies. most professional investors can't beat index fund returns long-term.
reading stock charts basics 💰 ʚɞ
stock prices fluctuate constantly based on supply and demand. don't panic over daily movements - focus on long-term trends.
volume shows how many shares traded. higher volume during price movements indicates stronger investor conviction.
common stock investing mistakes ✧˚ ༘ ⋆。
buying individual stocks without research, panic selling during market downturns, trying to time the market, following stock tips from social media.
putting all money in one stock or one sector. chasing last year's winners instead of diversifying.
how to actually start investing ⭑𓂃
begin with broad market index funds to get diversified exposure. learn about individual companies before buying their stocks.
start small and learn as you go. don't invest money you'll need within 5 years.
the time advantage 📊 ʚɞ
stock market has averaged 10% annual returns over 90+ years including crashes and recessions. short-term volatility smooths out over long periods.
starting young gives you decades to ride out market ups and downs while compound interest works.

understanding basic stock terms helps you make better investment decisions.

From Population Control to Population Crisis: China’s Baby Subsidies
Tumblr media
When China introduced its one-child policy in 1980, it was seen as a bold but necessary step to control its growing population. Now, over forty years later, the same country is offering parents cash subsidies of up to $14,000 per child in some regions to encourage them to have more children. This shift shows how the logic of population and economics has forced China to reverse its old policy in order to protect its future. It also serves as a warning and a timely lesson for India, which now holds the title of the world’s most populous country.
