[BSD 120] Theory/Analysis

These are my first thoughts on parts of chapter 120. It includes my personal interpretations and theories of certain things.

Warning: Spoilers ahead

1. Akutagawa & "True strength"

In my previous theory, I believed Rashoumon was in control of Aku's body (hence the old speech and clothing choice).

In BSD, abilities are the soul. "True strength" and "within yourself" could point to Rashoumon.

It could be that Akutagawa has inherited the purpose of his ability (Rashoumon). Therefore unlocking its full potential and or memories. Hence the drastic change that Atsushi sees.

The "purpose" stuff was another thing I briefly mentioned in my previous theory. In short: Purpose = job (e.g. the bookmark)

"This blade serves the heavens"

This blade = "I" (Akutagawa/Rashoumon)

The heavens = probably "the book"

"This soul follows the path of righteousness"

This soul = Rashoumon

This would mean: Rashoumon is righteous.

"The path of the knight"

Knight = Protector/Defender

This could mean Rashoumon is the book's protector.

So his purpose could be the book's "Knight", just like Atsushi is the book's "Bookmark".

If we want to say it in book terms, it'd be the book's cover.

"Idea. Will. All are empty."

This is directed at Akutagawa. Saying that he has no individual thoughts or will, he is just an empty shell.

I believe this can be seen as saying "You're a puppet."

This could mean that the current Akutagawa is like this because his role as the "knight" is needed (A god-level threat to the book has appeared and needs to be dealt with).

Meaning, it could very well be his soul's (Rashoumon's) purpose (the knight) has taken control. Making him a puppet with the only thing moving him being his purpose.

2. The higher dimension

First off: If we think of the real world where we are, then the BSD universe would be a "lower dimension" to us.

In BSD, the book can change/shape their world and therefore is part of the "higher dimension"

Basically, anything that doesn't follow the law of abilities and/or our everyday normal earth standards, can be considered as a higher dimensional being/thing.

As Fyodor explained: Stabbing a page will "kill" the character drawn on it. No matter how OP they are, they will never be able to perceive our dimension (reality) and therefore will not be able to stop it.

To make it easier: An author can write a story where the mc faces an enemy and dies. The author controlled the story/fate of the mc. The mc would never be able to stop that from happening.

...Actually this example would be closer to what the book does...they are a similar plane of existence but not the same. Fyodor's example is better for Ame-no-Gozen though.

Let's think of it the other way around to better explain:

In short: if you were to write/draw a character, that character would never directly be able to harm you or interact with you. That's because we're in a higher dimensional plane of existence.

Stories may just be fiction to us but to the characters they are real, just like life for us is real.

When a character becomes aware that there is a higher dimension/they are in a story, they still can't physically/directly interact with our world. The most they can do, is "break the 4th wall" and indirectly interact with the audience (e.g. talking to/looking at the camera/us).

Random:

The book is a higher plane of existence than anything in the BSD universe. Hence why anything written in it becomes the truth.

Ame-no-Gozen is a lower dimension than the book.

Therefore, if someone wrote Ame-no-Gozen out of existence in the book, it would be considered true and he'd be gone.

3. Fyodor's Plane

This entire "plane to board" thing has had me worried since the previous chapter.

I know they want us to think of this:

But it still feels odd. He gets on that, becomes undetectable. Is that what he's really planning to do though?

He says it's not his concern (whether they live or die) but it seems like a definite lie. In one way or another, it matters.

He seems to be in a hurry. It doesn't seem fake, in actuality it seems like he's trying to hide how urgently he needs to leave.

He completely dropped the whole "Dazai wasn't it so I'll just take Atsushi" and switched to "I don't care whether any of you die".

Honestly, he probably decided to drop the "other half" stuff when he realised Atsushi didn't have the same thoughts as the tiger.

And the "idc what happens to you lol" is more like "I need to leave quickly so let's stop here" which shows urgency.

Which means, Fyodor has somewhere to be...and fast.

Okay, this next theory is a long shot even for me, but what if he needs to get to Sigma before he wakes up?

Don't ask me why, I'm not sure. But it sure is something to think about. It's time-sensitive and we're aware that Sigma hasn't woken up yet. It seems to fall into place with the urgency.

4. Fukuzawa's Survival

This seems like a challenge to battle but Fukuzawa knew there was no way of fighting Ame-no-Gozen. So who is he challenging?

Fyodor.

Yep, Fukuzawa will fight Fyodor...

All the people (including me) that believed Fukuzawa will die at some point in the story, might be right after this battle.

Why does he say it like that?

And why does he look like he hesitated?

I checked the Japanese and it's: 特には (toku-ni-ha)

Which means:

Note: The "ha" (pronounced "wa") is a particle.

Fyodor, what do you mean?! Is it that you care about his survival "in particular" or "not particularly"? (...I should just leave this to those who are fluent in Japanese. I'm overcomplicating stuff again.)

Anyway, I feel like there's more to this than what we're seeing (Or maybe I just forgot something...)

5. Where's Rampo?

...no, seriously, where is he during all this?

He's probably doing stuff in the background to help fix this situation but we haven't even seen a glimpse of him since Fyodor came back.

Maybe we'll see him during the Fyodor vs Fukuzawa fight.

Akutagawa is basically Rashoumon right now.

Akutagawa is the book's "cover" (protector/knight)

Higher & lower dimension = Pretty much the same difference between us and any character in BSD.

Fyodor may need to get to Sigma before he wakes up. Hence the urgency to leave the fight.

Fukuzawa might die fighting Fyodor.

favorite thing about them: her role as the overprotective mother hen! she's pretty textbook example of what some real-life mothers are, seeing their daughters as extensions of themselves than their own being, and that's what pushes her to cling to kyouka so closely. because she genuinely believes what she's doing is preserving kyouka's emotional state, when she couldn't be further from correct. she's also one of my favorite character designs in the girls cast.

least favorite thing about them: the time she stabbed atsushi but that's it lol. i understood why she did it

favorite line: "Listen to me, Kyōka. I know how you feel. But... some things are simply impossible. No matter how much a natural-born assassin like you seeks light... A flower that blooms in the dark can survive only within the dark. If you pursue the light, its heat will burn you up in the end."

bonus interaction that's my favorite: i genuinely enjoy her putting her trust in atsushi to take care of kyouka as she adjusts to the day world. i know that it isn't 100% perfect that she still entrusts a different person to care for kyouka when she has seen that kyouka is more than capable of deciding for herself and taking action, but it's a step towards fully accepting that kyouka has left the bird's nest.

random headcanon: kouyou has definitely tried dressing kyouka a little more similarly to herself in the past. dressing her in pink, black and white, putting her hair up in a bun, and she looks back to those memories fondly.

unpopular opinion: she is Not a mommy figure to thirst after, she's not a girlboss, she's a thoroughly damaged woman that does not want her baby bird to suffer the same fate she did. also, i feel uncomfortable with bsd fans feeling high and mighty about hating her all along when there's criticism directed at her. i've never seen anyone make excuses and defend the emotional harm she inflicted onto kyouka during guild arc and it confuses me when i see fans insisting that to be the case. instead, i just don't see a lot of conversation about her story until recently when she's hated by many fans.

kyouka izumi (bsd)

favorite thing about them: she's one of my favorites to draw! what i love about her is her determination to keep moving forward, she's so young and yet so assertive to her own desires. if it weren't for her attachment to atsushi and the desire for the mundanity of living as a girl and not an assassin, if it weren't for her voicing to atsushi that she didn't want to kill any more people than she already has, she wouldn't be where she is now.

favorite line: "I saw a bright world. I cannot go back to a time when I did not know such a thing existed." and "My name is Izumi Kyouka, I've killed 35 people. I don't want to kill anyone else!"

brOTP: atsushi and kyouka!! they're inseparable and will always be the home to the other.

OTP: kyoukenji! i want to explore their dynamic more in canon and in the kny au

nOTP: atsukyou. i agree that kyouka definitely admired atsushi in a "crush" way when they first interacted but i am deeply uncomfortable in putting them in any kind of romantic dynamic, regardless of when kyouka grows older.

random headcanon: whenever kyouka wakes up in cold sweat from a nightmare, she knocks on atsushi's closet and asks if he could keep the closet open so they can sleep in a shared space. they don't sleep next to each other due to atsushi's awkwardness, but kyouka feels safer knowing that atsushi's always nearby.

random headcanon: somewhere, in a countryside of japan, lays the ruins of ayatsuji's childhood town. ayatsuji remembers most of his childhood peering through the glass windows of his mother's doll store, waiting for his father to arrive home. he remembers clinging a little tighter to the dolls in the store whenever a passerby gives him another nasty glare. it was always like that, ever since those accidents started. his last memory of that town is the pungent waft of iron, from the blood coating his head, dripping down his face, down his clothes and clutching onto his pale skin—and although his memory is crystal, even he cannot recall exactly what the townspeople were cursing onto him that night, he'd assume it to be vulgar nonsense. yet all his eyes could focus on is the moon, shining down onto his heaving body.

unpopular opinion: he doesn't look like dazai idk why some fans call him blonde dazai 😭 their hair is similar sure but it's not? exactly down to a t?? ayatsuji would hate his ass (/affectionate)

favorite thing about them: his philosophy! admittedly i didn't see his appeal until After i read the light novel, where at the time, the interlude chapter hadn't been adapted in the manga just yet. the interlude chapter is my favorite chapter in gaiden, because it gave me insight to kyogoku's philosophy and morals and why he decided to become "evil," and even debating if he truly is what society deems as "evil." none of you would understand the joy i experienced when i saw that the interlude chapter was adapted, jumped in the air and clicked my heels like a cartoon character fr. i LOVE kyogoku, the bsd antagonist of all time actually

Eventually, I'll post an APAU character sheet for him, along with a design analysis/explanation included with it.

More AU info for those interested:

Note : (I saw a couple people on here saying they were interested in my altered page au(and hsr x bsd au—im working on both at the same time), and i have a couple irls who actively get on my ass about working on it haha, so that was enough to give me the motivation to start working on it again and making more drawings for it... expect a lot of au related artwork ^^)

The Altered Page AU(APAU) is my own bsd AU where Fyodor was actually in the helicopter crash, survived, and rewrote The Page to revert, rewind, and change reality to find The Book. This causes several characters to belong to different affililiations(Sigma, Oda, Akutagawa, Shibusawa, Gin, etc), have different backstories(Akutagawa, Atsushi, Sigma, etc), in some cases have minor/major personality changes(Nikolai, Chuuya, etc), and to make different choices than they made from events in canon.

In the APAU, Ranpo is one of the few characters that is mentally the same as their canon counterpart. The other two that are the same as canon are Dazai and Fyodor.

All the other characters do not remember anything from the canon universe.

Out of the three characters that remember canon, Ranpo is the only one that was technically altered by the page rewrite. He is younger via the page writing, but still has the same mentality, knowledge, memories, and mind of his 26 year old self. He is just in a younger(by a couple/few years) body, like almost everyone else in the AU.

Ranpo is on good terms with Kunikida, Dazai, (eventually) Nikolai, and Yosano.

His relations with Sigma, Fukuzawa, and Atsushi are iffy/complicated. For the beginning of the AU, Sigma absolutely hates Ranpo(they may or may not end up dating, haha...) (I am a rarepair shipper. I dont ship mainy mainstream ships, so dont expect skk, fyolai, etc.)

He hates/is enemies with Fyodor and Shibusawa. Possibly Bram, too, in a way.

Ranpo is also one of the characters who suffers the most in this AU. Having several existential breakdowns, getting stabbed on several different occasions, and having to deal with Fyodor and the DOA/Rats actively trying to get rid of him.

dream is a very complex character I love him.

I like uh, dream, not in that kind of way though, more like, uh, a proud parent?? Idk I was gonna say it but then I forgot, mb. Ohhh right its more of an admirable way. Dream is the character I want to be. I love him so much, maybe if I were him I'd love myself a little more. Not really I just want to feel something new. Dream is the best, he has flaws, everything, better than me in every way imaginable. Big thanks to joku for making Dreamtale, this is the only solid reason I have to live for lol.

Being Dream isn't going to be easy though, I don't know why I want to be him, it's not like things will get better, it's just that I'll experience something new. Those fucking scenarios in my head at night are only the things that keep me motivated. Get home. Get in bed. Scenarios. Sleep. Repeat.

Dream is my comfort character. He is nothing like me, I am nothing like him, I don't know why, don't humans love themselves the most? Don't they love people who are similar to them? Dream is the opposite of me yet I love him, sometimes I wanna know what it feels like for everybody to look up at you, admire you. Even if it's just all fake from his aura he can't control, I dunno, Swad is a really cool concept too. I'd be dead without Undertale and the AUs lol, Dreamtale is my safe space(?) I don't know but just me seeing stuff that are Dreamtale related makes me jump mentally, almost physically. I just love the lore, the characters, the personalities.

Dream, is the best comfort character I've had. At first it was my imaginary friend, then Dream, then nikolai(bsd), then dream. Fuck you mean dream dream dream dream dream??

If I really were Dream though I'd probably given up a long time ago. I'll never make a story as good as him. That's what I like about Dream, he's beyond my expectations, who I wanna be, not some weird depressed person. Anyways I just like Dream a lot, he's the best.

He's the best, the absolute best. If I had to pick, Dreamtale disappears or I die, I'd rather die. Dream is my lil precious boi :3

Dazai:

Has bpd. A lot of his traits remind me of my friends with it

He some kind of trans. Nonbinary. Transfem. Transmasc. Idk he's megender lmao

He's described as appearing very youthful in the first two light novels. I imagine that once the events of the main timeline start picking up though, with all the time stopping or slowing abilities that *dont affect him*, he actually ages faster than the other characters. I draw current dazai with small wrinkles, which also hints at stress and stuff

Also, I imagine current dazai getting tanner as he works in the light, as well as getting more prominent freckles.

Round/doe eyes because that is part of his appearance in my opinion. Seeming unsuspecting and innocent, especially during his mafia days

Bad eyesight in his right eye from being under the bandages for so long. Saw this headcanon and loved it

Similarly, beastzai has bad vision in general

I always call No Longer Human an anti-ability in my head, fun fact

He loves to touch other people. Not a fan of being touched by others unless asked

I lowkey wanna start writing for a reader/og character with a telepathic ability. I think I'd want the name to be " We the living", (I know there's a book by the same name by Ayn Rand, but this is not related to it) and I'm currently drawing inspiration from different telepaths to fully flesh out the idea.

I want this character, or reader if I write the stories in that format, to have a theme around connection. So the way "We the living" would work is to create a mental link between you and a another person, this ability only works on human beings, you cannot connect to animals. You can telepathically link to multiple people at once, and they can also communicate with each other when linked through you, you're like a fancier discord server in that sense.

" We the living" can do more than share simple thoughts, tho. You can also see people's memories and visions, even some deeper parts of their subconscious. Tho to do some of the trickier stuff you'll need a high level of mastery over your ability, and it is very hard to almost impossible to invade an unwilling person's mind.

A very important side of this ability is that it shares feelings of pain and discomfort among the people are connected through it, physical or mental. The deeper the connection, the realer the pain. So if you connect with someone and they break their leg, you're gonna feel it too. The burden is yours to share.

Another drawback for " We the living" would be that it's very much a two way street, you look into someone else but they can also look into you. " We the living " doesn't steal information, it offers an exchange. It's an ability that encourages its user to stand on equal ground with who they use it on.

Anyways I've been thinking about this ability idea for a while, and honestly I'm still working things out with it. I lowkey wanna write some stuff with a reader character who has this ability but I'm very new to writing and my perfectionism might never let me actually finish anything worthy of sharing. Do tell me your thoughts if you want! I've been dying to talk about bsd with people lately:')

Having adhd sucks so badly when you're trying to draw😭 every time I open the app to finish Venus, I remember my 20 different WIPS and start working on them😔

However I will say the "Venus, planet of love, was destroyed by global warming" is the main reason I named him Venus and I'm planning on writing a little drabble or something around it :3 Mitski and Isle of lost dogs really influenced Venus. I probably mentioned it but there's the "I'm not a violent dog, I don't know why I bite" thing from IOTLD and that fits Venus perfectly.

While it's not exactly how Ace is gonna look, Sigma from BSD is a big inspiration for him! Long hair pretty boy with half white, half light purple hair !!! And Q from BSD is actually what inspired me to make Quinn, I love gremlin children they're so silly and fun. Quinn is truthfully just Q with a loving brother and less trauma 😭

I've decided on the names for the cupid and reaper oc ! cupid is Talia (no last name D: ) and reaper is named Virgil Sterling !

tho Talia, I can't decide if I should make him have white hair, his design is mostly shades of white, gold and soft pink to fit with cupids, so idk if the white would clash too much D: I was thinking if not white, maybe a very light brown shade?

I have not watched this show but the character designs sound very interesting!! Also I agree gremlin children are very lovable characters!! My favorite type of kid character is the no filter super blunt straight faced kid 😭

Id def go with a light shade of Brown hair borderline sandy brown gold like? So it doesn’t mesh with his outfit!

As promised, let me introduce you my two beloved BSD OCs:

Who are they?

Basically, Lewis and Antoine are two friends traveling around the world to discover exciting places while avoiding various government forces (more on that later). Though not related to the main story of BSD, they do know about organisations like Port Mafia and the Agency, mainly from what they heard in the streets and read in the newspapers since they arrived in Yokohama. However, they do prefer to not get anyone involved in their issues, nor do they really want to get involved in anyone else’s.

Lewis Carroll

Based on the author of Alice in Wonderland, Lewis was a man in his thirties with a fancy mind. As a child, he once had a wild imagination feeding his ability Wonderland (again, more on that later) but due to social and family pressure, he got forced upon a path of logic and perfection, now making it hard for him to think outside the box. Thus crushing his past self involuntarily and putting chains on his own mind in order to protect himself from outside complaints. As an adult, he became a plain math teacher for children, with a quite boring life. That is, until he met one certain child in London.

Their meeting

“Draw me a sheep.” said the unknown child out of the blue.

Lewis was stunned. He didn’t knew what to respond at first to this child, which he thought was one of his students. But when he put more thought on it, he didn’t looked like any child he had at the time. Who might have been this strange blond kid with unkept clothes? He decided to learn more about him, worried he may have lost his parents somewhere. However, as they talked, he quickly understood he didn’t had any. He simply didn’t knew about any “parents”. Actually, he didn’t knew much about the world itself either.

“Draw me a sheep!” repeated the child after a while of interrogative discussion about who he was, where he came from etc....

Lewis gently asked why such a demand, as he didn’t want to offend this possible lost orphan.

The boy fell silent. Then spoke again, a sad emptiness darkening his young blue eyes.

“I want a warm friend to bring with me” he simply responded.

Their exchange may have been succinct up to this point, but it was clear to Lewis that he was no normal child. As the boy seemingly didn’t have a name, Lewis gave him the name of one of his most beloved book’s author. The character of that one book simply reminded him of the boy.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

More based on the Little Prince’s main character than the actual author, Antoine was an enigmatic individual with the physical appearance of a young boy. Nobody knows of his real age, not even himself. However, most may have theorized that he at least was around for at least a few decades, if not centuries perhaps. One day found and caught by the french government in his - supposedly - hometown, he had no memories of his time before then, except for some vague fragments. He mostly remembered about this laboratory he was brought in, with a lonely room where he would occasionnally meet strangers dressed in white. Despite the many uncertainties surrounding him, Antoine was still of great interest for scientists. He didn't seemed to physically age at all. Could he hold the secret of cells regeneration or even immortality? They soon found out he did age but at a very slow pace, thus looking unchanged for many years.

Curious about this plausible new ability, they decided to make him meet a young girl, who would share his room from now on. This one girl was quite arrogant at first. Antoine didn't really like her attitude but she was the only other person he could befriend. So they did. They soon became friends. Then they learned more about the truth, may it be this girl's past, snatched from her orphanage to become a lab rat as well, or the whole reason why she was here with him in the first place.

It was all because of the young girl's ability. One that would let her copy another one and make it her own. They apparently wished to make a copy of test subject B612′s power in order to "save it” somewhere and be able to experiment on it without having to risk the boy’s life. But things didn't turned out like they wanted as the girl began to crumble under some unknown sickness. Her body couldn't handle Antoine's ability, so it seemed, and she quickly became unable to move. So she made a promise with Antoine:

“Be my eyes and explore the outer world, okay dumby?” she said, with little breath she had left.

A promise reminiscent of the one where they would explore and see the world together. One where he would do so if she couldn't follow, to make her dream come true even when she became a star.

Their abilities

Little prince

No one really knows the details about Antoine's ability. Everything we know for sure is that his body has a very long lifetime, yet not immortal. He is destined to die of aging one day and is still weak to any wound like anyone else. However, we did notice Antoine's body starts to produce a faint glow whenever he gets sick or when his life is in danger in general. Not that it really helps at all though.

Wonderland

Lewis' ability is a bit complex and confusing, much like Alice in Wonderland's whole world.

In theory, Wonderland is quite simple: it allows its bearer to create anything he thinks to be a nonsense, something that is normally impossible. It could be seen as an area surrounding the user, in which he can create anything he wants, as long as it meets the proper requirements (being a "nonsense").

However, as the whole definition of "nonsense" depends on the user's mind, one could have a hard time creating anything. As such, what could be a nonsense to someone isn't necessarily one for Lewis. He is still quite a peculiar man after all.

A strange man, but with many restrictions on his mind and imagination. As he was forced to think with logic for the most part of his life now, he can't stop asking himself about the specifics of one’s question. Where a visible nonsense would occur, Lewis' mind would subconsciously ponder over what could make it truly real or impossible. If he can't get proper answers to those questions, then it can't happen either.

The beginning of their adventures

As they became much closer as people who somehow understood each other, Lewis began to be more friendly with the child, rather than looking like a mere adult talking to a little one. He saw himself in his struggles. He saw a young mind, much like his own a long time ago, slowly getting crushed by adult's expectations and limiting his own thoughts. He couldn't let the same thing happen twice when they still had a choice. So he encouraged him to get creative and let free of his imagination, with no worries about exterior opinions.

One day however, they suddenly got caught off guard by militaries sent by the french government as well as some members of the Order of the Clocktower, there to retrieve the unknown child for their own purpose instead. It was at that time that Lewis was finally able to make use of his ability once more after so many years. Inspired by Antoine’s naturally spoken nonsense, he unleashed Wonderland in order to escape. This also put a permanent stop to Lewis’ normal way of life, as he now was as searched for as Antoine was. It was time for a involuntary trip around the world, it seemed. But this time, Antoine wasn’t alone anymore.
