I mean a thing to think about as well is that humans irl do technically have tails, theyre just vestigal. So like,,, maybe that justifies halflings having them here? Idk, either way they should have tails because thats fun
Thesis: Dungeon Meshi halflings have tails in fanon because it's fun and interesting <3
Antithesis: Well, actually, according to the world guide, halflings are considered "human" in the region by social standards which require that they have a standardized "human" skeleton; you can't just add tails without fundamentally changing the complex nature of anti-halfling prejudice in their world.
Synthesis: Dungeon Meshi halflings DO have tails and we just don't see this because it's standard practice for halflings to remove them young in areas of the world where bullshit skeleton-based race science is the norm.

i totally understand why ppl ship Laios and Kabru, i get the appeal, but to me that doesn't probably capture depths that their Freak Behaviors would create if combined in such a way
Kabru has just enough sense to not stick his dick in (that particular brand of) crazy, but he is still studying Laios like a bug. imagining him in situations. rotating him in the fantasy microwave. etc. he's thoroughly observed Laios in his natural habitat (dungeon), currently observing him in his unnatural habitat (civilization). he's seen Laios' family dynamics, has been sucked into his friendship circle, subtly interrogated fellow victims. there's only one thing left
he's never seen Laios Fuck
is this, perhaps, the singular aspect in life in which Laios is normal? is he his normal abrasive self or a conscience and tender lover? what does Laios think foreplay is? would he even register someone making moves on him in the first place? are dog collars involved at some point?? oh god what if the dog collars aren't even a sex thing for him--
imagine, you are an elven government spy here to seduce state secrets out of the mysterious king of the golden kingdom. months of pretending to care about his special interest are starting to pay off. after a banquet (you specifically were chosen for the job because of your immunity to poisons) he shyly invites you back to his chambers. this is it! the two of you are being shadowed, as would be expected for the king's first illicit encounter with a foreign dignitary, but you've finally done it!
Some Guy just walks in and starts taking notes while giving you the world's most intense Weezer Blue stare. you nervously, yet seductively, try to ask the king if he likes being watched or something~ ;) "haha yeah Kapru likes 'studying my habits' sometimes :)" oh god this isn't even a sex thing. with every second the Guy becomes increasingly distressed. Laios is just happy to be here

Oh...
Tumblr media
The word antiquity here interests me, since it means that the ancient war is considered to be from that equivalent time period.
Of course, there being a war doesn't mean it's the war, doesn't mean it's all the same one. What makes me think that the gnome page's war is the same as the destruction that the demon caused is that Dungeon Meshi always does seem to refer to a war in particular in general, vaguely gesturing to it as big and long ago, "the ancient war". It's said gnomes sided with dwarfs, which makes sense considering their heated differences in opinions on magic, so it makes sense for the "gnomes vs elves war" to also be the "war between elves and dwarfs where gnomes sided with the dwarfs".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the timeline seems to be, war between elves and dwarves was already started when people decided to trick the demon and trap it in dungeons, if I take the "during" of the elves' blurb literally. The war might have been a direct result of the demon though, and the wishes it granted while being in dungeons. Since its appearance in Dungeon Meshi's world dimension, it had risen to being worshipped as a god, although the worshippers' assumption that it wanted human sacrifices and its compliance to it ultimately meant it was seen as a threat to control.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since being trapped in the dungeon, people still went to it to have wishes granted, from the examples we see mostly things that make sense in times of conflict: "Kill that guy!" "No, that guy!", "grant my people immortality!"- though who knows the details and how many wishes were truly made with war in mind. "Once, the excessive development of science and magic technologies generated strife among the races", the development mentioned could very well have been a result of the demon's wish granting. "Both of whom had built advanced civilizations". We see the great utopic-looking civilization that resulted from these wishes...
Which existed until an old man then wished for the destruction of the world...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Considering the heaps of bones and the way the demon talks about it, it really does seem like the demon wiped out humanity at large. With the 'grilling a hunted lamb over a campfire' look it does seem like a general civilization reset. But I'll remind that it's said that the eastern archipelago has little remnant effects from "the ancient war", so it might be more like the demon wiped the humanity that it was aware of, for example. That there were "a few survivors" the demon wasn't aware of might have just been that it didn't know to look in other places, that it only targeted human groups it knew of. Since the example here looks pretty technologically unadvanced, it makes sense that they wouldn't exactly be loud inhabitants of some unknown neighboring place, not having boats to travel the sea with for example.
This is when the demon started being selfish and manipulative to treat humans like food, knowing the starvation that just letting them do whatever can result in for it.
Of course, since knowledge of the demon is restricted and managed by elves, it makes sense it simly became known as the war.
The Adventurer's Bible was released after the fight at Thistle's house, so the reveals about the demon near the end of the manga weren't included in it yet. The Complete Adventurer's Bible hasn't been fully translated yet, but it very well might have added precious information or confirmed things about the ancient war. Or might not, but we do know there is new info in everyone's profiles, so it'd surprise me.

I may have to re-read the manga for this but, could the demon could take a human form? Obviously no completely but something like what it did with marcille (not all furry but not completely human)
Unsure! I don't think there's ever any indication it can but also no indication it can't?
Tumblr media
The winged lion seems to have needed the wish from Laios to be able to take on a fully human form but there's no indication of how close he *can* get to human without that wish as far as I remember
Tbh all the restrictions put on the demon are pretty blurry and might have been created by the ancient civilizations when they first created dungeons to contain the demon, maybe preventing it from taking a human form was done to avoid the demon tricking them by pretending to be human? Or maybe it's a restriction from the nature of the demon itself? Since how it looks it's related to how the dungeon lords feel/perceive it might be that they can't tell whatever the demon is isn't human so that feeling prevents it from being too humanoid? Or maybe it's just a coincidence we only see it as animals
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"The demon's form is usually a reflection of human desires." "Those appearances are only formed so that I can more easily understand human nature, I don't actually have a physical body like that"
With Marcille that's as humanoid as we see it I think, its PRETTY humanoid the hands are fully human but the face remains a lion, he's a step away from being a naked man with a lion head
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
His face doesn't really get any more human so maybe the restriction is that it still reads as non human? I did say it might be that the dungeon lords can't see the demon as human but maybe if Marcille didn't know it as "the winged lion" he would have looked even more like a sexy guy? Like could he be just a guy with horns if that's how they imagined a demon to be? lmao
Anyway I couldn't find it explicitly said anywhere I looked

GANG I AM SURE IT IS OLD NEWS BUT I HAVE BEEN DOING MATH AND LEMME TELL YOU A FUCKING THING
EXHIBIT A: MITHRUN’S TIMELINE PER THE DUNGEON GUIDE
Tumblr media
EXHIBIT B: KABRU’S TIMELINE PER THE DUNGEON GUIDE
Tumblr media
EXHIBIT C: MILSIRIL’S COMIC PER THE DUNGEON GUIDE
Tumblr media
HYPOTHESIS: Milsiril was bare minimum visiting, caring for, and feeding Mithrun at points in his timeline between year 480 (trying to recover) and 500 (appointed as a captain - this is also noted to have happened immediately when he was fit for work, since they were running out of people)
In the comic, Milsiril specifically references Utaya (year 499, from Kabru’s timeline - it’s the only demon incident in Utaya), as she uses the incident with the demon in Utaya to get Mithrun to eat and get his act together
Kabru lived with Milsiril in the elven capital from year 499 to 510
Milsiril specifically dislikes and avoids other elves… now with the apparent exception of Mithrun, who she thinks she might have quite liked pre-nuking
Milsiril would not want to go to Mithrun’s family estate and deal with his entire family every time to take care of him… and they may not have been keen on her dolls or cooking
The only thing we know about Mithrun and his family is that he hated his brother, and visits him every five years (brother has extended a permanent invitation for Mithrun to visit any time pretty sure Mithrun overestimates how much his brother cared/noticed he didn’t like him)
His parents deadass aren’t mentioned except to note that he’s the bastard child, and his parents ignored his older brother. There’s an implication here that they preferred Mithrun… until they sent him to a death squad
Milsiril has a repeatedly-mentioned tendency to take in strays, usually kids of short-lived peoples, and strong nurturing instincts that may/may not be pretty dehumanizing
CONCLUSION: there is a non-zero chance that Mithrun and Kabru LIVED TOGETHER FOR A FUCKING YEAR post Utaya at Milsiril’s house and just didn’t even fucking notice
I am losing my mind
This is incredible
Mithrun deadass coulda been The Crazy Uncle In The Attic for a full fucking year
He was busy going feral and blaming himself for Utaya cuz it “could have been different” if he’d been there and recovered for the same fucking year THE LAST SURVIVOR OF UTAYA was in the next room
What kind of unhinged interactions did they have
Kabru was fucking SEVEN the state of Mithrun in that comic woulda fucking RETRAUMATIZED HIM any mention of him being a dungeon lord???? NOPE
We know from the changeling incident that Mithrun barely considered Kabru a distinct person so 0% chance he would ever put it together but KABRU
Kabru is an observant little thot and his favourite thing is making assumptions from his observations
Just a MENTION of Milsiril and Kabru shoulda been all up on that
Mithrun FULLY DID mention her as Milsiril the Gloomy when exposing his backstory and Kabru just… tossed every single name in the garbage
(Which, fair. Elves live a long time, the odds of there being only one Milsiril are 0% and she wasn’t all that gloomy with Kabru, and, frankly, he had bigger concerns named Laios Touden)
Ugh too much too many bits Otta’s comic includes them actually talking about his adoptive mom but without names they were SO CLOSE I am going insane
Fanfiction
So much fanfiction
It MUST be post Kabru/Mithrun this ship is all angst and tbh the whole “desiring someone who can’t desire” is only gonna consternate Kabru for so long so once that is done I want a slice of “WAIT A FUCKING SECOND you’re the guy in the attic???????”

Guys... Pattadol's tall man age translation is 16.5 years old. If it's barely okay for her to wear muffs, but perfectly acceptable for Thistle to wear the children's clothing then that makes things pretty damn clear.
Thistle is a child, likely in his teens, but still a child under the elven age of maturity (and our real world age of adulthood.)
The funky thing here is marcille, but if she ages half the rate of an elf as a half elf, then her age translation would be 20? That may be the cap of tolerance to wear muffs, or she may get away with it due to being under 80 (the elf queen doesn't recognize mixed race children, so she may not recognize mixed race children's aging rates with her followers taking her lead.) I'm not sure. The former of it merely being the age cap for tolerance makes more sense to me, because on the other side we see the other canaries all being in their mid twenties+ (developmentally) with peepaw looking particularly dashing in his ill tailored cap, all labeled as being uncomfortable culturally.
Anyways, my point is, we see a mid adolescent (Pattadol) wearing a set of muffs with it being barely acceptable, but it's okay for Thistle to wear them with no extra notes. This is a clever confirmation that he is younger than 16.5 developmentally, to a significant enough margin for him to be viewed as a different age group.
Ryoko Kui does a great job finding ways to describe things accurately while still being able to preserve the vagueness that suits the story. I honestly find taking advantage of that, and twisting it, when the canon content does give clear indications (in multiple areas) about characters and their bio stats (in regards to things like age. Be gay as hell 🩷) kinda....disrespectful to the artist ngl. For clarity, this is a canon image. The information in the image is canon.
