ESCAPE
Pairing: Hiccup x Fem!reader

Hiccup backed up against the wall of the ship, clutching his abdomen. He groaned in pain as he applied pressure to the wound, blood seeping through his armor.
“It seems like you’ve lost, Hiccup. Give the night fury up to me,” Grimmel commanded.
“I’d rather die,” Hiccup spat.
Grimmel hummed dismissively. “Then you will die.” He raised his weapon above his head, and the smaller man turned away and shut his eyes.
The clang of a sword and no impact influenced Hiccup to open his eyes. Snotlout stood in front of him, along with Tuffnut. The pair shoved him away from the barely awake young man.
“Stay with me, man,” Tuffnut rasped.
“Yeah dude, don’t die on us!” Snotlout added as he faced down with Grimmel.
“I’ll be fine, Tuffnut. Go help Snotlout,” Hiccup said. He attempted to stand up, but curled into himself as he coughed uo blood.
“Dude, you’re not okay,” Tuffnut asserted. He called for someone else as he begged Hiccup to open his eyes.
Hiccup’s last coherent thought was I never got to ask her to…
A deafening screech echoed on the water, and Grimmel looked up from his battle with Snotlout, only to shrink back as the late evening sky became dotted with Night Furies. However, the one that stood out was the girl on the Night Fury in front of the army.
(Name) signaled with her hand, bringing it down in a chopping motion. Plasma blasts flew like comets towards the fleet of ships. Panicked screams overlapped one another as fire spread across the ships.
“Hiccup!” (Name) screamed as she clambered off of her dragon and ran towards the aforementioned man.
“Wake up!” She slapped him, and the brunette woke up with a start.
“Agh- huh?” Hiccup groaned, using what little remaining energy he had to rub his cheek.
“You scared me! I thought you died!” (Name) shook the man as he spoke, and he became dizzy from blood loss and the rapid motions.
“S…stop” The brunette coughed.
“Sorry, Hiccup” You apologized.
“Let’s get you home,” The woman hoisted the chieftain into her arms and draped him across her dragon’s back.

Thanks for the tag @nopenototdaysatan! I was lucky to see this come up on the comp or I wouldn't be able to copy lol.
1. How many works on AO3? 220!
2. Total word Count on AO3: 1,100,339 in 3.25 years.
3. Top 3 fics by Kudos: 1- What Binds Us - DPxDC - Not surprising, it seemed to hit the right cord with people. I'd love to have You Can('t) See match it because it has similar vibes, but we'll see. 2- Eldritch Echoes - Linked Universe - Start of the Eldritch Wild series, so yeah. 3- Eldritch Deity - Linked Universe - Same series, Fierce and Wild. What's not to love?
4. What Fandoms have you written for? The Legend of Zelda, Encanto, Batman, Danny Phantom, The Sandman, Nimona, DCU, HTTYD, Sherlock, Eragon
5. Do you respond to comments? I try to! I don't always get every one, but I respond to most.
6. Fic with the angstiest ending: A Little Time to Kill - Linked Universe - Time dies from something really mundane and stupid. Hurt, no comfort for Whumptober
7. Fic with the happiest ending: Uhhhh 86% of my fics. I did the math.
8. Do you get hate? Every once and a while someone gets rude about a plot point. They go to the great garbage can in the sky.
9. Do you write Smut? One (1) single E rated fic, as revenge for something I no longer remember.
10. Do you write crossovers? Normally, no, but DPxDC is the exception so far.
11. Ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Yep!
13. Have you ever co-written a fic? Yes, for some collab events. It's not my favorite, but I can do it.
14. All Time Favorite Ship? Ravioli~
15. WIPs you want to finish but doubt you will? Jason owning a bookstore that's actually the House of Mysteries.
16. Writing Strengths? Natural sounding dialogue!
17. Writing Weaknesses: Introspection...and world building. Ughhh I don't like doing them.
18. Thoughts on Mixed Language Dialogue: Encountered this a lot in Encanto. For a word or two you can pick up from context, fine. If it's more then that, add it in english after please. Some of us didn't take Spanish as a second language and struggle.
19. First Fandom you wrote for? Bridge to Terabithia, technically, although it was never online. I did not like the girl dying, so I fixed it :)
20. Favorite Fic you've ever written: Merchant & Flock, probably. Quintessential Ravioli being idiots.
Heads up, I put the base questions below the cut for easier copy/pasting

Óen (Part 7)
Tumblr media
Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Part 6 | Part 7
Thunderbirds Are Go and HTTYD crossover.
I finally managed to write some more of this. A scene popped into my head and here we are :D Plotline is evolving and I'm feeling more positive.
Many thanks to @onereyofstarlight and @idontknowreallywhy for the read throughs and support :D And to all those who dare to join me in this insanity.
Have a little Virg and Hiccup. I hope you enjoy.
-o-o-o-
Virgil had a huge dragon.
She was a shifting iridescent green, red and gold, and taller at the shoulder than Hiccup standing twice over and all muscle. Toothless appeared tiny beside her, even Óen was dwarfed.
A massive single horn arched out of her snout, while two more branched into a giant V over her head. Her neck and shoulders were protected by plates of glistening armour.
She glittered as she moved.
They were standing on a high cliff above the sea to the east of the settlement. Virgil claimed that a glide off a high point would be much kinder to Toothless’ wings than a launch from flat ground.
Hiccup agreed, so they had slogged all the way up here immediately after breakfast.
The wind was bitterly cold…but that was nothing new.
“Can I?” Hiccup held up a hand, gesturing for permission to reach out to the large dragon.
Virgil arched an eyebrow. “Dá is strong, but she’s gentle.” A small smirk. “She loves a scratch under her chin.”
The smith was securing an intricate saddle, lined with contraptions that fascinated Hiccup almost as much as the dragon it was strapped to.
But Dá was eyeing Hiccup and he had to respond.
He approached carefully, arm partly outstretched, hand open.
Golden eyes followed his every move.
Toothless warbled at the behemoth and Dá snuffled back, rolling her shoulders, much to protest from Virgil. “Hold still, there, lovely. Toothpick is harmless.”
Oh, great, he was never going to live that one down.
Hiccup took another step closer and offered his hand.
A deep rumble and smooth horn touch his palm.
Hiccup opened eyes he hadn’t realised he had closed to find those golden eyes adoring him.
Toothless rolled his eyes and grumbled.
Tentatively, Hiccup let his fingers slide across her snout and down under her chin. A gentle rub and the great dragon started purring.
Like distant thunder.
“She likes you.” Virgil stood next to her, watching Hiccup’s ministrations.
“She’s beautiful.”
“Aye, she is, and she knows it.” Virgil reached in between her first two plates of armour and did something that set her thunder crackling. One of her back legs started pawing at the ground. “She would sit here all day being admired and petted if she could. Wouldn’t you, lovely?”
That earned both of them a huff with enough warm breath to flap Hiccup’s jacket.
“Yes, yes, I know you want to fly, but I have to check on our patient first.” He retrieved his hand and turned to Toothless. “Now, young one, let’s check those wings of yours.”
To Hiccup’s surprise, Toothless immediately lifted and unfolded his right wing. The smith examined it, working gentle fingers down the length of the wing bone, testing muscle and movement. “You’ve rested well overnight.” He turned to Toothless’ left wing and did the same. “You are looking better, but you are not to strain yourself today. No aerobatics. You’re not my first night fury patient and Dá and I will intervene if you threaten your health or your rider’s”
“Hey!”
Toothless’ grumble echoed Hiccup’s protest.
Virgil turned to Hiccup. “And that goes for you, too. I will not have any hotshot flyboy actions today. Your dragon is injured and needs care.”
“I would never harm Toothless!”
“Eh, you’re a night fury rider. From my experience, there are tendencies to forget that slow and easy wins the race.” Virgil peered down at him. “Love does not negate stupidity. Don’t do anything stupid or Dá and I will pull you from the sky.”
Hiccup’s eyes narrowed. They could try. They would have to catch Toothless first…
And the thought brought him up short. Toothless was injured.
And Hiccup was stupid.
Virgil was eyeing him. “Are we agreed?”
Hiccup straightened and nodded.
“Good.” Virgil turned back to his dragon. “It will be interesting to see your prosthetics in action. I’m impressed with their design.”
“You are?” The words fell from Hiccup’s mouth without thought.
The smith turned back to look at him. “Of course, the work is excellent. Your’s, I presume?”
Hiccup nodded.
“I thought so. Hiram will want to speak to you.”
“Hiram?”
But Virgil had climbed aboard Dá and was securing himself with safety lines to his thick wide belt. The belt was a green that echoed Dá’s brilliance. The smith had swapped out his loose red shirt for what he called flying leathers. A mix of blues and green, similar to those Scott had been wearing when he saved them the day before.
Virgil also had a helmet like the Flaith, but his hinged at his temple and he had it open, flipped above his brow. Green was slicked down its sides.
He patted Da and the great dragon turned towards the cliff edge.
Toothless growled and butted Hiccup…who had frozen in thought, apparently. “Alright, alright, don’t burn your tonsils.”
It was Toothless’ turn to huff.
Hiccup ignored him and climbed onto his shoulders, securing himself. “You ready, bud.”
The dragon scoffed and trotted the both of them to stand beside Virgil and Da.
“I will go first. You follow slowly and carefully.” Virgil looked down at Toothless. “Coic will be watching, young one.”
Toothless barked up at the smith, but Virgil slammed his helmet closed, Da let off a roar, and they launched effortlessly off the cliff.
Toothless spread his wings. “Okay, bud, take it easy.” He patted his friend’s black scales.
The night fury snorted and grumbled, but trotted off the edge into the sky.
And the wind caught them.
It was like letting out a breath he hadn’t known he had been holding.
Black wings sailed them in a gentle curve upwards, recovering from their initial dip and catching the winds pushing up the steep rock.
Oh, yes, it had only been a day, but a day of worry and strangeness and here they were together again, flying.
“Keep it simple. Flat turns. Minimise climbing.” Stern instructions bounced across all the blue. Da’s wings were as vast as her body was massive. Hiccup had no doubt the dragon could grab or lift anything she felt like. The pair were circling Hiccup and Toothless at a respectable distance - enough to give them room to manoeuvre but close enough to use those massive dragon muscles should they need to.
But there was no need. Toothless behaved himself and soon they were gliding above the ocean with smooth and gentle strokes, far slower than their usual pace, but still flying.
The ocean blurred beyond the roar in his ears and the chill of the sky welcomed them.
After their meeting of diplomatic words yesterday, Virgil had excused both Hiccup and Toothless on health grounds bringing the virtual game of maces and talons to a close.
These people were on a mission. They were not relaxed. There was no ale beside the evening fire. There was drink, yes, but no stories or song. the evening had been tense with worry. There was something being unsaid in Hiccup’s presence. He could feel it.
Surprisingly, he didn’t feel threatened. Whatever had the village on edge, it wasn’t Hiccup or Toothless - that was unusual in their experience, a night fury tended to put the average person more over the cliff than on edge.
None of the brothers showed any animosity towards Hiccup or Toothless. In fact, they treated them as welcome guests.
And yes, they were brothers, Scott, Virgil, the mysterious John, and Alan admitted to the relationship. There was even mention of a fifth brother who did not make an appearance last night.
The food was plain, but the company was welcoming and kind. Even Virgil’s stern words appeared to come from a perspective of caring about Hiccup and Toothless rather than any threat.
It was becoming easier to trust these people.
Alan had kept Hiccup company for most of the night. He chattered a lot, mostly about dragons. He was fascinated with Toothless, but admitted that Scott had yet to allow him a dragon of his own. That was followed by blatant sibling complaints despite the fact he obviously idolised the Flaith, Oen, John and Coic…and yes, Alan was very talkative.
Hiccup was grateful for it. While there was enthusiasm, Alan was not clueless. They talked about navigation, how high a dragon could fly and, of all things, mathematics.
There was a possibility that the two of them could become friends - a rare and precious find for Hiccup.
But first there were the politics of the situation.
Hiccup sighed.
Toothless warbled a query.
“It’s okay, bud, just stuff.” Focus. “You feeling okay?”
His dragon warbled a positive.
“Shall we scoot a little closer to Dá? I want some answers.”
Toothless snorted, but between him and Hiccup’s control, they darted sideways, swooping easily into a parallel flight path with the green dragon.
That helmeted head tilted slightly in their direction. “You’re doing well.”
Hiccup dipped his head in acknowledgement.
He swallowed. “Virgil, what is the Commitment?” Alan had mentioned the term several times last night. Something to do with dragons and an oath. But while Alan could talk the winter coat off a yak’s rear end, he was obviously not dumb and changed the topic each time Hiccup asked the question.
He didn’t know whether it was a secret or Alan just didn’t want to talk about it.
So Hiccup asked Virgil.
The smith didn’t immediately answer and for a moment Hiccup thought he was going to be ignored. But then…
“The fight for life. The effort to save what the gods attempt to take, human, dragon, whatever. Our family has drawn a line and chose to fight to save those we can.”
Hiccup blinked. “Why?”
“Why not? So much is taken without protest, some given at the whim of a weapon of war. We have chosen to battle against the loss, to prevent, to save what we can.”
“With dragons?”
“With or without.”
“And Cóic?”
“Cóic is our matriarch.”
“Matriarch?”
“That is all you need to know.” A pause. “It is time to return.  We will fly again tonight.” He patted Dá’s side and the great dragon banked away from the conversation.
Obvious avoidance.
Hiccup sighed as he clicked his foot into the right configuration to let Toothless follow the pair. No wonder Dad was grumpy after diplomatic meetings.
The thought of his father brought him up short. Hiccup hadn’t even managed to work out how far he was away from Berk, yet. His father was likely beside himself with worry and driving everyone insane with it.
Astrid…
The Isle swelled below them, Dá landing smoothly on the Arctic thin grass far beneath them.
Toothless spiralled down into a landing with a determined Viking on his back.
Hiccup needed some answers.
Now.

Fic Writer Tag Game
Thanks for the tag, @heatherthetiredwriter 💛
Your favourite fic to write: Lift a Sail. All the parts of it. It’s my favourite escape.
A fic you thought readers would love: I really thought Trouble at the Amber Cantina and Icebox (Mandalorian fics that take place before the show) would’ve reached some but they received mostly just crickets. I don’t know if it’s just that the Mandalorian fandom tanked after season 3 or if they just plain old sucked.
The fic they actually loved: Echoes. I didn’t expect this one to gain such popularity but it did.
The fic you love the concept but hate writing: well, if I hate writing it, it probably doesn’t get past the idea-barf-in-the-notes-app stage. But if I rephrase that question as a fic I love the concept of but have trouble writing, then I’ll point to ol’ Face of the Lost. I love it, I want to continue it, but whenever I open it, my brain just makes white noise.
The hardest fic you’ve written: it’s a tie between Anchors and Unsinkable. Anchors because I wrote a character dealing with becoming disabled and I poured quite a bit of my own feelings and experience into it; Unsinkable because it was my most ambitious plot ever and it turned into a monster-length epic.
A fic you want to write but never do: oh, there’s a list… the modern Mando/Star Wars Rebels AU, Bad Batch fix-it, a few HTTYD story ideas, something for Prospect 2018, carry on with my Avengers stories… so many folders full of fic ideas just gathering dust on my device.
No pressure tagging: @seleneisrising @sassygirl579 @desertbeskar @the-kittylorian-writes @sytortuga @corellianhounds @visitbespin @beskar-bay @quicksilvermad @poetryinmotion-author and hey anyone else who wants to, go ahead!

A Year of Animation Day 21: How to Train Your Dragon 2
Date: January 21, 2025
Day: 21
Content Watched: How to Train Your Dragon 2
Year: 2014
Rating: PG
Run Time: 1 hr. 42 mins.
Tumblr media
I don't see how anyone could watch this movie and not think that "everything in the frame is moving." There seems to always be something happening in the background. We have the cheering fans during the dragon races, Gobber and his dragon screwing around while Stoick and Hiccup are talking in the blacksmith shop, and Stormfly basically playing fetch with Erit while Hiccup is trying to change his mind about dragons.
Like the first film, they also use animation to emphasize character traits. Hiccup, again, has drawing materials, which he now carries in some pretty neat pockets, likely designed by himself. Toothless also still draws, and judging by the fact that he seems to do this when trying to befriend Cloudjumper, I wonder if Toothless views drawing as a type of friendship ritual. There are some other Toothless details that I like as well, like him walking on his hind legs and his spitting fire to keep Hiccup aloft while gliding, by letting him ride the hot air. (Honestly, this reminds me so much of Tobias in animorphs). I also think the scene at the end as Toothless and Hiccup are flying upward, along the alpha-dragon's tail, is a nice visual echo of the end of the first film.
Some other nice visual characterization includes the elder, who is basically a cat lady (but with dragons) and Valka, who acts a lot more animalistic than Hiccup or most of the human characters. She is often on all fours and doesn't really notice social cues. This is indicative of spending twenty years with dragons. Speaking of twenty years, a potential failure on the part of this film is, as my husband noted, Hiccup and Astrid look five years older, but the Snotlout, Fishlegs and twins... don't really.
Tumblr media
I was going to say my favorite animation is probably the flying sequences again, but then I remembered the scar on Hiccup's chin, which is in the first movie, even though it's not plot relevant until the second. I don't know how much backstory the creators had for Hiccup when they made the first film, or if there were already thoughts about what a second might look like, but it's a level of continuity that you don't always get in movie franchises (but should).
Tumblr media
My favorite scene is when Valka and Stoick sing "The Dancing and the Dreaming." They're just cutesy and I love it, and I love the brief moment that the three of them have as a family (Honestly, I should have known here that Stoick was going to die--this is always what happens when the main character gets a happy moment with the family.) But I also just like the song.
Tumblr media
In story terms, I love the continuation of Hiccup and Toothless's friendship. I love ride-or-die relationships, and as I said in the last HTTYD post, this on is literal. But after my write-up about Dumbo, I feel like I need to talk about one scene in particular. This is towards the beginning, when Hiccup almost crashes, gets rescued by Toothless, and then comments on how Toothless's solo-gliding isn't so hot. Toothless sulks, which is probably his way of reminding Hiccup that he didn't really want to try the solo glide in the first place, and Hiccup calls him a baby, but also attacks him with physical affection, at which point Toothless dangles him off a cliff. Then Hiccup apologizes, and they wrestle.
Tumblr media
I don't know, myabe I'm totally off here, but I feel like even in this moment, where Hiccup tells Toothless not to sulk, that this is a healthier relationship than Timothy Mouse and Dumbo. Because despite calling him a "big baby-poo," he is still very clearly showing affection. But I also kind of love that Toothless's response is to dangle him off a cliff? It's like his way of saying that he still expects Hiccup to apologize? Okay, it's an extreme way to do that. (Though he also just saved Hiccup's life--it's unlikely he's going to let Hiccup die now.) Regardless, I feel this interaction is healthier than Timothy's comment that "elephants don't cry." Of course, it's really not a fair comparison because the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless is just given so much more room. (I also think Toothless is more expressive than Dumbo, which doesn't hurt.)
Tumblr media
But even though Hiccup's relationship with Toothless is the central relationship of the story, I can't ignore Hiccup's relationship with Astrid, which is also amazing. I grew up on the likes of Tamora Pierce and Phillip Pullman, who set a standard in my brain for strong, healthy romantic relationships (thanks, by the way), and Hiccup and Astrid fit the bill. I love how much affection and support they show to one another. When he's leaving to talk to Drago, he pauses long enough to kiss her (but not long enough for some emotional moment that is absurdly long given the timing), but she follows him. Because she believes in him and supports him. At one point in the movie, she also shouts, "take 'em down, babe!" which just feels like the most Viking thing to say to your significant other.
My favorite part of the relationship is the impression scene. I actually really love Hiccup's impression of Stoick, but Astrid doing an impression of Hiccup is hilarious, and even funnier when Hiccup starts critiquing it. It's basically their version of the scene where Hiccup and Toothless wrestle--they're affectionate toward one another, even in their teasing. It's the kind of thing I want out of my own relationship with my husband.
Tumblr media
I think this movie has less exposition than the first, but again, they do a solid job with it. Some of it gets delivered in the opening voiceover, but a lot of it is still delievered through effortless dialogue. Some information that they could have left out, but still got in a perfectly reasonable way are the names of a lot of the dragon species, which Valka casually drops as she's talking about the injured dragons she's been living with. (Also, in case anyone forgot or didn't see the first movie, Hiccup gives her the highlights of that movie in the same conversation.) I will admit that I'm unsure how she knew about Toothless's ridges, since she doesn't seem to have met a night fury before and is surprised by other things, like his retractable teeth. I'm also not entirely sure what the purpose of bringing Hiccup and Toothless in seperately was, unless it was to make sure he wasn't dominating Toothless the way Drago dominates his dragons. This is something I would have liked a little more spelled out.
And speaking of Drago, I kind of want the movie that tells his story? The way he dominates the dragons reminds me a lot of Pi's behavior in Life of Pi to become the dominate animal in the lifeboat. So I feel like there could be a lot of complexity with this character.
Regardless, I think that's about all I have to say on HTTYD2. I think I like the first movie more than the second (though I think I felt the opposite when I first saw them), but I still quite like this one, which is probably to do with those incredible relationships. I kind of feel like I'd fly anywhere with these characters.

Bad Batch Season 3 Wishlist:
New Year, hopefully a new season of tbb. I just wanna throw my thoughts into the void on this one. Enjoy
🔸️Wolffe. Where is he? We've seen Rex and Gregor, yall gotta explain how they found Wolffe
🔸️Omega mimicking Crosshair. I'm not sure if Hemlock will let them be near each other, but how cute would it be if she mimicked him like she did with Hunter and Phee?
🔸️More cloned zillo beast. Can Omega befriend the big guy a la HTTYD? Ride it into battle maybe?
🔸️Tech should stay dead. I really don't wanna see any kind of "winter soldier" shit with him. Give the show some weight by letting characters stay dead
🔸️Crosshair gets to kill Hemlock. Let him have it, as a little treat
🔸️Echo returning to the batch. I love him, your honor. Also they'll probably need someone tech-savvy after... well, y'know...
🔸️Cid to get punched in the snout. I don't care who does it

Nonsense
@soulmateseptember
Summary: Written for Soultember 2023. Set before Httyd 1. A soulmate. Everyone has one, but not everyone is lucky enough to meet theirs. The only thing you have to lead you are your first spoken words. Despite growing up surrounded by a tightknit village, Hiccup feels alone. And as his First Spoken Words sound like nonsense to him, he fears his soulmate, too, will be as out of reach as the acceptance and love that he seeks from his father and his tribe.
Warning: /
Rating: General
Characters: Hiccup
Pairing: Hicctooth (platonic)
Words: 530
Fandom: How to Train Your Dragon
Prompt: First Words
Author’s Notes: My only prompt written for Soultember 2023.
Enjoy! :)
XXX
Nonsense. The words sound like nonsense to him.
Ever since Hiccup figured out it were his soulmate’s first words to him that he could hear inside his head, he’s been trying to figure out what they’ve been saying.
Soulmates know they’ve found one another when the first words they speak directly to each other matches the ones they’ve been hearing in the backs of their minds for their entire lives. They’re literally referred to as; The First Spoken Words.
Unfortunately for Hiccup, he hasn’t been able to figure out what his mean. He’s tried to look into sagas, requested book after book from Trader Johann, talked with seafaring merchants that have come from far off places and dared to sail up to the Barbaric Archipelago despite the Dragon Scourge.
None of them have been able to tell him anything so far, not even the language he’s hearing.
In a bout of anger, he throws another book at the wall. It lands on his desk, causing some of his pencils and papers to fall to the ground. It makes quite a bit of noise in his quiet house, but he finds himself unable to care. He’s home alone, his dad has left on another quest to find the Dragon’s Nest.
Sitting on his bed, the 14-year-old, just shy of 15, pulls his blankets around himself. As if concealment will somehow hide him away from the world. As if it’ll somehow shield him from the apparent fact that he can’t even decipher his soulmate’s first words to him.
He doesn’t even know what language they’re spoken in. By now he knows English, French, Gaelic, Latin, bits and pieces of a few others… But none… none seem to match the things he’s been hearing for as long as he can remember.
The odd sounds that echo endlessly in his mind, begging to be solved. They’re just growls. Growls and what sounds like a screech. They make absolutely no sense to him. They sound so animalistic, he can’t hear a single word. He would almost think his soulmate a dragon if not for the fact that this was completely impossible.
Though how ironic would it be? The embarrassment of Berk’s soulmate, his soul’s life partner, can’t even be the right species. They can’t even be on the same side of a war that’s been going on for the past 300 years.
He feels so alone. In a tight knit village of only a little over a 100 people, there’s no where he truly belongs, no one who even wants to hold a normal conversation with him. Not unless it’s to talk about how he should change literally everything about himself before anyone would consider him worthy of “normal conversation.” No friends, his father is always as far away from him as he possibly can… In a place in which no one seems to want him, he thought he could at least have his soulmate with him.
Apparently, he thought wrong.
Still hiding away, wrapped in his blanket, he lies down. His heart aches as he’s plagued by his First Spoken Words, knowing he’s never going to find out who- or what- they belong to.

So, I've been assigning different HTTYD dragons to Star Wars characters, because it's silly and makes me happy. However, I unfortunately thought about how this would work with/affect different Star Wars plots... Suffice it to say, it no longer makes me happy. It, in fact, makes me very sad now.
Like, just the thought of Echo & Fives having a Hideous Zippleback.
The way Fives and the Zippleback would grieve when Echo got blown up at the citadel. Or how it would be all alone after Fives was killed.
What would happen to it? Would it get killed along with Fives? Would it be forced to watch its remaining rider die? Or would it not be there, and then wonder why it had been abandoned?
Also, from Echo's point of view, would he be rescued from the Techno Union only to find that not only is his twin dead, but so is their dragon?
There are so many potential scenarios, and none of them are anything less than heartbreaking.

A girl in a book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Josephine March, through her vivid struggles, submerges herself into the world of writing — as always.
A/n: AHH, so I kind of don't know why I'm doing this..lol. I wanted to try out what it would be like to write something for one of my favorite characters from little women? Idk if I'll make a rp blog for her separately(probably not), make a few oneshots about her (not an x reader thing), or WHAT, but I got a random push to do this ...whatever you wanna call it and I just went with it. I've been thinking of doing something like this, whether it'd be of little woman or Pride and prejudice (Elizabeth Bennet), I'm not sure yet, but we'll see! It isn't httyd but 🤷🏼‍♀️
Tumblr media
Jo paced about in the attic, mumbling quietly to herself as her hand endlessly wrote away to her heart's content, mind striving to grasp the words she formed in her thoughts onto the paper she held with an unwavering grip. Everything else seemed to fade in comparison to the ecstasy and satisfaction of hastily, yet precisely, jotting down the world she had created by her imagination.
"..Change this word...no, perhaps I should keep it...Ah, I wonder what Marmee would think.."
Her faint whispers decorated the silent room, bringing a gentle echo throughout the tranquil setting. Every now and then the wood beneath her feet would greet her with a slight creak, reminding her she was still walking in reality, at least physically. The candle light, ever so delicately illuminating the walls and her paper, shone as a guide for her eyes to examine the work she had done.
All labor, of course, comes with some sort of price. In the case of Jo March, it'd be the sting of her hand which came after writing too much; a sharp, trifling disturbance that never forgot to make itself known to her poor finger joints. The matter was only considered insignificant by her because of one reason alone:
An author had to complete the course of their idea once it came to them. The risk of forgetting it was too troublesome. Why endure the hardship of retrieving a memory of a few words that would most likely not appear again when you could just continue on the story?
It sounded quite logical to her determined, fiery brain, so what else was there to do?
The young lady shook her hand in resistance to the nagging pain, sharp grey eyes filled with the resolve to finish this specific part of her novel. To help her ease the aches, or rather distract her from it, she hurriedly sat back down at her desk, nearly stumbling over the legs of the sturdy old chair while doing it.
Time must have swiftly snuck by, lost in the realm of her scribblings and thoughts until the sweet call of her mother reached her ears, "Jo! If you're hungry, you better get down here! Dinner will be gone before you know it!"
Just then, she awoke out of the delightful reverie which writing often kept her in, moving a frizzy strand of her deep brown hair out of her face as her attention became drawn to the merry chatters downstairs. The vague, comforting voices of her sisters warmly held her heart, causing her to slowly rise up from her seat, instantly yearning to be among them.
A part of her almost felt guilty, jabbed with remorse because of her own errors. It was only the other day when she had lost her temper again, something she wished to toss in the sea of forgetfulness. That would be a memory in her mind she wouldn't care for losing. Nevertheless, her mother, ever present, always told her those mistakes served as a lesson in the future, correcting and molding her to be more secured in self control over her emotions – to be at peace within herself and to those around her. Especially to her sisters.
Therefore, stifling the feelings of self-condemnation, Jo ran out of the attic, promising herself to finish the novel once she had eaten.
And when she arrived in the same room as her family, she was overwhelmed by the swelling affection that easily replenished her heart. Even though she had joined the program of entering adulthood, she received another gratifying taste of her childhood in that moment.
After all, life and love are very precious when both are in full bloom.

Pabu was a true gem of nature, tucked away amid the endless oceans of its home planet.
As the warm sun kissed the little island, turquoise waters lapped gently against the grainy shores and ancient stone ports. Vibrant green brush and trees swayed in the breeze, their fronds whispering to one another. The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of exotic flowers, peppering the island in patches of oranges, reds, and pinks. Birdsong echoed alongside the crashing waves, moon-yo hoots and howls bouncing from one side of the island to the other. From the cobblestone streets and markets came the sound of life; cacophonies of chatter and murmurs, a blend of voices as the islanders bartered and laughed and greeted one another with merry smiles.
It was as if time stood still on Pabu, and every moment spent there was a moment of peace.
Hunter looked over the city from the balcony of Shep’s home, his stomach full and his heart more so.
He tuned in to Tech and Phee’s conversation, smiling into his cup of freshly squeezed juice when he mostly heard Tech’s voice going on about artifacts. A quick side eye and there Phee was, listening with her elbow on the table and her cheek in her palm, eyes locked onto his rambling brother as if he was the only person around.
Wrecker lay on a lounge chair, his hands behind his head and a dazed smile on his lips. With his belly finally full, the food coma hit him harder than ever, sending him into a blissful sleep that no one thought to disturb. Especially not when the sun was just right. Not when the winds carried the salty smell of the ocean and the sound of Omega’s laughter as she and Lyana chased the moon-yos around the balcony.
He looked over the city once more, watching as everyone lived their little slices of life. Couples walked hand-in-hand. Kids played ball and danced together, holding fizzing sparklers above their heads. An older man fed a cluster of moon-yos from a paper bag of scraps, waving at a woman as she walked past him with a basket of flowers hooked on her arm.
Hunter found it hard to believe that this island wasn’t a dream. Everything felt so serene and calm that it just… didn’t feel familiar. Not for them, at least. Not after years of missions and months of running and scavenging. After living day-to-day for most of his life, being able to sit and breathe felt odd. It was even more strange that he actually had to sit and wonder if he could call this island home.
As far as he could remember, home was never really a place but a people. His people — the one rambling on to an interested girl; the other sleeping peacefully on the lounge chair; the little girl who held Lyana’s hand as she scurried out through the gate.
Hunter glanced down at his cup and gave it a gentle swirl.
When did he last feel so content?
With the little voice in the back of his head reminding him that two of his brothers were out fighting for their lives (albeit for different reasons), he knew that he’d never have a total moment of peace… but, as small as this was, it was enough. Enough for him to close his eyes and take a deep breath. Enough for him to sit and actually feel the sun on his face. Enough for him to listen to the ocean, its gentle waves reminding him of a quiet Kamino.
Footsteps approached him from behind. He smelled the faintest scent of fruit as Phee leaned against the parapet, elbows up on the wall with a cup in her hand. She left Tech by the table, sparing a glance his way before turning towards Hunter.
“You look like you’ve got a lot on your mind,” she teased.
The opposite, actually, was what he wanted to say. Instead, he settled on, “It’s nice here.”
“Nice enough to stay?” She wasn’t pushing him but she wasn’t exactly being subtle about it either. Hunter knew that Phee always had two reasons for everything she did and when she glanced back at Tech, eyes softening, Hunter knew exactly why she posed this question.
He smothered the urge to smile and looked off towards the ocean, shoulders sagging as he struggled to come up with an answer.
“Think about it,” Phee murmured, nudging his arm with her elbow. “Take all the time you need. Pabu’s not goin’ anywhere.”
He hummed, the corner of his mouth lifting as he glanced from Phee to Tech. “Sure.”
An unspoken conversation took place as Phee narrowed her eyes, unable to hide the smallest trace of her smile. Hunter just arched a brow and she gave in with a sigh, shaking her head.
“You’ve got me there, Bandana. I think staying here would do you all some good — especially Omega. But, I’m not one for peer pressure. Maybe a walk through the city might help you come to a decision.” She looked over the city, her face lighting up when she noticed the streamers and decorations hanging from rooftop to rooftop. “Looks like tonight’s the Giving Festival.”
   “Giving Festival?”
Phee nodded. “Everyone comes out for the Giving Festival and shares things like food, clothes, and jewelry — and everything’s free with no expectation to receive anything in return. They thank the ocean and the island for giving them a safe haven. It's why the kids get dressed in blue clothes and parade around with their sparklers. In fact, Omega and Lyana should be down there right now.”
He thought of it for a brief moment before nodding. Phee took that as her sign to leave but not without giving Hunter’s arm a squeeze. When she turned, Tech greeted her with the smallest smile — an action that Hunter seemed to notice happening more frequently than usual.
Leaving his cup on the parapet, Hunter removed his knife from the sheath on his waist and placed it atop the table.  After a final glance back at his brothers, Hunter walked through the gate and left the balcony, entering the colorful streets of Pabu.
It took him a bit to get used to the sheer kindness that never seemed to run out from the island’s residents. Wherever he went, it seemed that everyone knew he was a newcomer, so he was often given cheerful waves and happy smiles. Some even stopped him, briefly chatting to introduce themselves before going back to their festivities. It was all odd, truly, but it was somewhat nice to be treated like a neighbor instead of a criminal on the run.
A father, as Shep had previously called him. Those words still echoed in his head and he had no intention of ever forgetting them.
Hunter’s walk through the city had its effect, as Phee suggested. The more he wandered, the more he wondered if he could live like the islanders: at peace and happy. Domesticity was never really an option until now, but as he watched the children play in front of their homes, parents watching from balconies and doorways, he imagined himself in their shoes. It was easy to picture Omega running through these stone streets, laughing as freely as she did when she first latched onto his heart.
It didn’t take long before he came across that exact sight.
Standing in the center of a busy market street, Omega and Lyana wore blue robes over their clothes and carried glowing sparklers in their hands. They both had blue powder staining their cheeks and nose, causing Hunter to smile when the girls shared a giggle at how they looked. It wasn’t until Omega turned towards a store and waved that he realized the two girls weren’t alone.
Emerging from the doorway of a dome home was the woman he saw from Shep’s balcony. While she didn’t have a basket of flowers hanging from her elbow anymore, she carried two necklaces of sea glass in her hands and gave them to Omega and Lyana. From where he stood, Hunter could hear the gratefulness in Omega’s voice as the woman tied the thin string around her neck. Her nimble finger worked quite quickly before she took a step back, gently brushing a strand of hair out of Omega’s eyes.
The action was so soft that it made Hunter watch her with a peculiar gaze. She was beautiful, but she had a certain quality about her that outshone her beauty — a genuine energy that she revealed as she spoke to Omega with ease.
When she turned her head, Hunter noticed the flower poised behind her ear — a bright orange flower that brought out the color of her cheeks and the vibrance in her eyes. The woman crouched, her yellow sundress settling around her like a river of color. She grasped Omega’s hands and squeezed, grinning up at her before winking. Omega giddily nodded her head up and down and squeezed the woman’s hand as she turned, pulling her along as they both followed Lyana down the road.
The woman’s dress billowed after her as she ran. She had a captivating smile, cheeks flushed and eyes blazing. The wind blew through her hair as if it was created just for her, carrying her laughter to his ears.
The moment they took the corner, Hunter followed, interested to see where this night would take him.
-
You liked Lyana’s new friend. Omega was a firecracker of energy and curiosity, roaming to and fro with the intention to seek, find, and explore. When Lyana brought her to your doorstep and made introductions, you just knew that the little blonde was bound to become a new regular in your jewelry shop. She loved exploring the various things you created, including the sea glass necklaces.
When it came time to meet the girls outside, you made sure to grab the necklaces she’d been eyeballing. Omega’s expression of shock was worth it when you presented it to her, and her soft voice of thanks was enough to make your heart melt.
True to the promise you made to both girls, you took Lyana and Omega to the market square full of music and dance. Omega’s eyes were full of amazement as she looked over the festivities. Vibrant colors glowed from the lanterns hanging overhead. Streamers swayed in the wind like spinning ribbons of silk. Dancers formed circles that spun quickly, cheering and coaxing others to join. Lively, upbeat music played from the performers standing around a tall statue. They played with passion, dancing alongside a few children that joined their sides.
You held both Omega and Lyana’s hands as you guided them to the dancing circle in the center of the square. While Lyana was excited to join, Omega’s reluctance grew until she pulled her hand away, shaking her head as she took a step back.
“I can’t,” she said, shaking her head. “I’ve never danced before.”
You smiled softly. “Would you feel better if I went first? Then you can see how it goes and if you want to join, you can jump in next to me and Lyana.”
Omega nodded and you grinned, turning to face the circle. Adjusting the flower in your hair, you picked up your dress and barged into the dancing circle, joining those who moved in unison. It took a moment before you caught up, but falling into step was easy. You spun and twirled and danced like there was no tomorrow, eyes shut as you switched partners and crossed the open circle alongside others. As the circle broke apart, paving way for duos and trios to have their own moment of dance, you noticed Omega and Lyana holding hands while they jumped back and forth and all around, laughing and giggling like girls in their prime.
The music picked up its pace and the circle reformed. Dresses were kicked up and hands were clapped loudly, laughter and whistles echoing from the bystanders that watched. Entranced by the pure jubilance of the music, and the energetic feeling of the dance, it was as if the world melted away, leaving nothing but you and the music.
You closed your eyes to enjoy the moment when suddenly, your balance slipped away as you bumped into the person beside you. Just before you could hit the ground, a pair of hands grabbed you by the elbows, hauling you up to a firm chest. Planting your hands on the figure’s vest, you struggled to catch your breath as you laughed, cheeks flushed with embarrassment.
“My goodness,” you gasped, shaking your head. “I’m so sorry-”
The moment you looked up, all of the words just left your lips. A knot twisted in your gut when you met a pair of rich brown eyes, that crinkled with amusement as they gaze down at you.
“Careful,” he murmured, his voice low and steady.
You wet your lips, uncertain if you could even speak, when Omega’s voice suddenly echoed from behind you.
   “Hunter!
She and Lyana ran up to you and the man, halting in their tracks the moment they saw the odd position you were in - your hands on Hunter’s chest with his on your arms.  They looked at one another with wide eyes and started giggling, causing you to take a step back and shyly fiddle with the flower behind your ear, cheeks as red as the lights above you.
Hunter put his hands on his hips, a little furrow in his brow, but he didn’t seem threatening. It was the observant gaze of a father.
You couldn't help but stir at the sight. Not only was he protective but he was quite gorgeous. He had the structure of the marble statues you’d seen in the Archium. Soft features, like the roundness of his jaw and the curve of his nose, but there was strength as well. Strength in his rich brown eyes as they moved from you to Omega.
And that strength, however threatening it may have been to others, softened when he placed his hand on Omega’s head, teasing her with a little tug on the ends of her hair.
   “Having fun?”
It was easy to admit that you were entranced by everything about him - from the way he carried himself to the way he spoke. He was both gentle and sturdy, something that drew you in and made it impossible to look away.
“Yeah!” Omega giggled, breathless from the amount of running she did earlier. “Lyana took me around the market and look-!”
Shoving her hands in her pockets, she pulled out various little trinkets: a knife made of whalebone, bracelets fashioned from polished stone, a ring of silver with a little opal on top, chewing gum from sweet sap, and a few others that she’d been gifted by the market goers.
With the tip of his finger, Hunter nudged around the items in her palm before offering her a small smile. He gave the blue powder on her cheek a gentle swipe with his thumb before settling his hand on her shoulder, eyes shifting to you.
You stuck your hand out, smiling bashfully.
“Everyone calls me Coral around here,” you said, managing a small chuckle. “And I promise that I’m not as clumsy as I seemed earlier.”
“I know,” he remarked, shaking your hand. When he noticed your odd look, he backtracked, eyes widening just slightly. “I mean I saw you, uh, dancing. You’re good — at dancing, I mean.”
Ignoring Omega and Lyana’s giggles, you bowed your head in thanks, your voice soft as you hummed, “Thank you, Hunter.”
He gave a small smile. “My pleasure, Coral.”
“It’s a giving festival, Hunter,” Omega sang, nudging his side. “It’s custom here to give something to someone that you meet for the first time. Look, Coral gave me a necklace from her shop! Lyana has the same one so we’re matching.”
Hunter frowned, glancing down at his empty pockets. He flashed you an apologetic look and you couldn’t help but giggle. “Sorry, I don’t have anything on me at the moment.”
You shook your head, removing the flower from behind your ear. Taking a step forward, you closed the gap between you and Hunter, tilting your head to look up at him as you tucked the flower in the breast pocket of his vest.
“It’s not a matter of obligation,” you murmured softly, adjusting the petals so that they were all on display. “It’s just a matter of acceptance. You’re new here, so we give you-” You glanced down at Omega and winked. “-and you, these gifts to welcome you to Pabu. You accept these gifts; we accept you.”
Lyana smirked, adding, “Kisses are accepted too!”
“Alright that’s enough from you two,” you interrupted, shooing them away when the two girls started giggling. “Go back to dancing — and make sure you get some of those dragon candies before Sebby runs out!”
Lyana gasped and snatched Omega’s hand. As she began to pull her away, Omega gave you and Hunter a happy wave, turning with a laugh that made Hunter’s eyes soften.
“She hasn’t been this happy in a long time,” he noted in a quiet voice, unable to look away from the girl even when you glanced at him. “Things have been… they’ve been tough on her.”
“I know,” you murmured, causing him to arch his brows in surprise. “Omega kind of told me everything about your current situation. She told me so much about you and your brothers, I practically feel like I know you already.”
“Of course,” he sighed, shaking his head. “Sorry, she has a habit of doing that.”
“Don’t worry,” you assured, nudging his side. When his lip twitched up, you smiled. “I can keep a secret. Besides, I’d like to see her around more often. Lyana has a hard time making friends and Omega’s brought out a side of her that I haven’t seen before — she just looks so youthful when she isn’t shouldering some of Shep’s burdens. Being a single father is tough on the two of them and I think having some support is doing them both some good.”
What you said must have resonated deeply with Hunter for he fell into silence, a distant look in his eyes as he watched Omega receive a cup of steaming candies from a stand. She looked his way and lifted the cup above her head, a toothy grin forming when Hunter nodded at her in approval.
“Thank you for making her feel accepted here.”
“Of course… but what about you?”
He glanced down at you and arched a brow.
“Do you feel accepted here?” You clarified, gesturing towards everyone in the market square. “I know how hard it can be to settle down. I had a similar experience before I found myself on Pabu. It took me a while to adjust but once I did, this place became my safe haven like it did for so many others.”
Hunter took a moment to look over the festivities. He watched the people smile and dance and greet one another. He watched them live their lives, sighing.
“As long as Omega can find a home here, that’s all that matters.”
“It isn’t a crime to put your own needs forward, Hunter. Think of what’s good for you as well.”
“We still have unresolved matters,” he explained with a trace of frustration; not at you, but rather at the ‘unresolved matters’ that he mentioned. “There are things that need our attention-”
You removed your hand from around his arm to place your palm against his chest. He stopped talking, his eyes honing in on yours as you peered up at him with a seriousness he hadn’t seen before.
“Can you resolve any of those things from here?” You questioned, arching a brow.
He hesitated, then shook his head.
“Then it’s best for you-” You glanced back at Omega, “-and her, to put those aside for now and just accept this time of peace. She needs your attention too, not just your protection.” Giving him a little smile, you fiddled with the flower in his pocket, murmuring, “Care to take a bit of advice from a stranger?”
Hunter’s eyes crinkled as he nodded, amusement in his voice when he hummed, “Go ahead.”
You absentmindedly adjusted the petals as you spoke. “Surviving is the bare minimum of what it means to live. Thanks to you, Omega knows how to survive — maybe you should show her what it means to live a little bit as well.”
“How do you suppose I do that,” he asked with a sincereness that made your heart shatter. “Us clones don’t do much living — all we’ve ever done is survive.”
“Learn from others,” you suggested. “Learn from their experiences and their own lives… and if you feel comfortable with accepting help, let us show you so that you can show Omega.”
Hunter’s nod was so sudden that it made you furrow your brow in confusion.
“Alright,” he said without an ounce of hesitation.
“Alright?” You echoed, shocked by how quick he agreed.
To your surprise, Hunter took your hand in his own, engulfing your fingers, and began to pull you towards the girls across the square. His expression was muted but there was a little smile on his lips as he said lightly, “We need to learn how to live, right? Then show me how.”
You laughed as you nodded, squeezing his hand back in return. “Alright, but you can’t get mad at me when the time comes for you to step out of your comfort zone. Living doesn’t mean it’s always comfortable.”
“I can handle a bit of discomfort."
   “We’ll see about that."
You called out for Omega and Lyana as you approached them, earning wide-eyed looks of excitement the moment they noticed you and Hunter holding hands. To their dismay, you let go just to give Omega a gentle nudge toward Hunter.
“Hunter said he’d like to dance with you,” you lied, causing Omega’s eyes to widen as they flicked up to him.
   “Really?”
His reluctant gaze shifted from Omega to you, narrowing just slightly before he looked back down and offered his little girl a small smile, nodding. When he held out his hand, Omega grasped it with excitement and pulled him to the dancing square, rambling on and on about the things she experienced while he was busy talking to you. As he was pulled into the sea of dancing duos and trios, he looked back at you with a mixed expression, causing you to giggle and wave.
“You like him,” Lyana sang by your side, tugging on your dress. “I think it’s cute. You can’t stop looking at him with googly eyes.”
“Don’t act like this wasn’t part of your plan, squid,” you huffed, earning a giggle. “You and Omega don’t exactly look as innocent as you think you do.”
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she sang, taking your hand and squeezing it with a hopeful gaze. “Do you want to dance with me?”
“How could I ever say no to you? Lead the way, squid.”
And lead the way, she did. Lyana pulled you into the circle right alongside Omega and Hunter, swinging you into a spin the moment she had a grip on both of your hands. You spun and spun with her, laughing alongside her giggles, cheering when everyone clapped in unison. Out of the corner of your eye,  you caught a few glimpses of Hunter and Omega. It wasn’t so much of a duo dance as it was Omega dancing while Hunter held her hands, occasionally spinning and hauling her up in the air just to hear her laugh.
All that mattered was that Hunter seemed to be enjoying himself. He didn’t have the same stress that you noticed in him earlier; no more tense muscles or furrowed expression. Peace sat in his eyes as he danced with the little blonde, living off of Omega’s happiness.
Lyana spun and spun you until suddenly, without warning, she let go of your hands, sending you stumbling into the person beside you. You went to apologize but stopped when Hunter’s familiar face looked down at you, his hands sprawled across the plain of your back to keep you upright as he held you in a dip.
Omega and Lyana both giggled as they began dancing together, acting as innocent as the little devils could.
“What did you say about not being clumsy?” He teased, causing you to flush with embarrassment.
   “Second time's a charm?”
Hunter lifted you, taking your hand to guide you into a spin. He pulled you into him, bringing your back against his chest.
“Thank you,” he murmured against your ear, “Tonight’s been fun.”
“See?” You hummed, guiding him in a gentle sway from side to side. Almost instantly, the music softened and the upbeat tune became a gentle, harmonious song that eased a bit of peace through the energetic festival. “Can you feel that peace? That is the difference between living and surviving, and there’s so much more for you to experience, too.”
“Will you show me?” He asked, causing you to turn your head and give him a credulous smile.
“Does this mean you’ve decided to stay on Pabu?”
“I think that’d be best for all of us.”
“Then yes,” you agreed. “I’ll help as best as I can… but can I ask why me?”
“Omega likes you,” he said with an audible smile on his lips, “And I… I trust you... so far.”
“I’m honored,” you murmured, breaking into a giggle when he spun you around to face him. Your hands slid up and over his shoulders, interlocking behind his head. It was an involuntary gesture to look down at his lips but you couldn’t help it.
Hunter had this protective, genuine feeling that made you feel so safe near him. It was an odd thing to notice about someone when first meeting them, but it was only solidified when watching him and Omega. He had a specific gentleness that he kept reserved for her and now, as it seemed, for you as well.
What you didn’t expect, however, was for him to feel the same way as you.
“Was Lyana telling the truth earlier?”
“About what,” you murmured, forcing your gaze to go from his lips to his eyes.
“About a kiss being a gift.”
Your mind went blank. It took a moment before you nodded, finding the confidence to move your lips and speak. “She was.”
He guided you into another spin, gentler than before as he pulled you into his chest. “What does it mean?”
“It’s an invitation,” you explained softly. “A gift of vulnerability, as well as a promise. They aren’t given unless they are genuine — it means you find enough value in another person to give them your affection rather than an item. Kissing someone at the Giving Festival is typically a sign of courtship.”
“Courtship?” He questioned curiously. “You carry that tradition around here? Didn't take you for an old-school type of girl.”
“Well,” you sang, causing him to chuckle. “The elders call it that. I mean, it’s just dating among the younger generations.”
He hummed, slow movements swaying you to and fro. As he danced with you around the statue, passing the band that played their gentle tune, he noticed the beautiful flowers on the floor and stopped to pick one up. With gentle fingers, he tucked it behind your ear and gave you a small smile when he noticed how red your cheeks had become. Just like the flower in your hair.
“Can I kiss you?” He asked gently, tucking away a strand of hair that fell in front of your face.
You tilted your head up to him, smiling to hide the fact that your heart was practically beating out of his chest.
“Yes,” you breathed, your stomach twisting with anticipation.
His hand cupped the back of your head, the other gently resting against your back. Hunter pulled you close enough for your chests to touch before he lowered his head, lips skimming over your own.
“Are you certain about this?” You whispered against his lips. “You hardly know me.”
“I know enough to be certain I want to kiss you,” he hummed. “Are you?”
You couldn’t help but laugh, shaking your head.
“Just kiss me, handsome,” you said with a smile. “We’ll figure out the rest later.”
He smiled as he kissed you, lips curled in amusement even after your lips collided. You couldn’t help but giggle against his mouth when his hand wove through your hair. It was an even bigger surprise when he dipped you, earning a few cheers and hoots of encouragement from those who stood by — including Omega and Lyana who seemed to be the loudest (and happiest) of the spectators.
When he pulled away, he never truly left. He kept his hand interwoven with yours, keeping you by his side as the dancing resumed and the festivities regained their upbeat tempo. Hunter pulled you out of the crowd and even though you didn’t return to the dance, the night continued with you showing him various different things throughout the market. From different juice stands to candies (which he denied rather quickly), you showed Hunter all that the market had to offer before stealing him away to show him the island itself.
While Omega and his brothers were distracted with the festival, you brought Hunter to the sandy shores. You removed your shoes and coaxed him to do the same before dragging him to the water. He cringed at how cold it was and stiffened when you splashed him, earning a glare that slowly turned into a smile when you turned to run away, laughing as loud and freely as one could.
And so the night continued — with music echoing from the city while water splashed and laughter bubbled from the sandy shores. The Giving Festival continued into the morning, and when Omega and Lyana tiredly returned home to find Hunter still missing, the two girls shared a knowing look that washed their fatigue away. They gossiped back and forth about you and Hunter, whispers turning into giggles that then turned into gasps when they realized that Hunter might, someday - possibly - plant roots on Pabu.
It occurred to Omega then, as she sat on the floor of Lyana’s bedroom surrounded by blankets and pillows and snacks, that the Giving Festival did, in fact, give her something. It wasn’t jewelry and it wasn’t candy, although she did hold every gift very close to her heart. It wasn’t Lyana and the new friends she’d made that night, including you and all the others she met.
It was a new home — and that was the gift that Omega found herself cherishing the most.

'I see you'
Pairings: Merida DunBroch & Hiccup Haddock Horrendous III (mostly platonic)
Word count: 5,424
Synopsis:
After reuniting with his mother during a crusade for magic, Hiccup is overwhelmed by the things that this event has awakened, however, he is not alone, a good friend comes to help him.
Or, where Merida and Hiccup tell each other parts of their lives that they hadn’t allowed themselves to share with anyone else.
(Most of this is just Hiccup and Merida telling each other how they viewed their stories)
Warnings: Abandonment issues, regret, insecurities.
Author's note:
Hi everyone! First of all, this is my first fanfic ever, I wrote this just to please my 9-year-old-self and she was obsessed with mericcup, but it has little to no romantic content, it's more of a character study, I needed to understand MY Hiccup, because I changed A LOT of the HTTYD plot, I really just stayed with the first movie, the rest it's just little bits of all of the other things, so keep that in mind. For me it's just the start on a slow burn but but you don't have to see it the same way.
Also, this is part of a RoTBTFD saga, and if you just like all of this people being friends, no shipp drama (not even the canon one), then the first book of said saga is for you, no shipps, just friends and bonding and a little bit of angst, after that, there willl be slowburn mericcup, so stay tuned! (The thing with Hiccup and Valka would be fixed eventually, it's in their nature to understand).
Thanks for reading!

That morning, Hiccup discovered that her mother had not been killed by a dragon, leaving no trace behind, but left Berk, she had seen how a dragon showed curiosity for her son, saw that dragons are not bloodthirsty beasts, she thought maybe there was something else behind all this ridiculous war, but if so, in the village they would never listen to her, they would probably throw her overboard; being the village chieftess would not gain her any privileges. So she left her son in the care of her husband, and left the only home she had ever known.
When Valka and Stoick reunited, she was sure he would hate her; but her husband simply took her face, wiped her tears and welcomed her back into the family; turns out that Vikings don’t usually stop to think about the past. Or, well, most Vikings.
At first Hiccup was happy, but as the day went on, he began to think about what it meant for his mother to be gone, everything plummeted when in his mind a short, simple and hurtful phrase echoed: "So, that’s why she left me".
That terrible idea did not come alone, it took many different forms, but so far it had not left him alone. Hiccup retained his emotions as much as he could, it wasn’t something he used to do, but this time he didn’t really know how to act, so he kept a slight smile all day and just watched her parents dance, love and tell how much they had missed each other. During the night everything exploded. In his insomnia, Hiccup was scheming so many ideas and questions that he thought he would ignite at any moment. Then he began to feel that he was short of air and that he had a big, heavy lump in his throat, he needed fresh air urgently, so he began to walk towards the exit, and he inadvertently started running; he only stopped outside the ice cave, then the air began to fill his lungs again, but it was not enough to continue to hold the cry and fell on his knees. Shortly after that, Toothless arrived, he brought a boot and a blanket, the dragon had accompanied him for many nights where it was only him, Toothless, the fire of the chimney and his silent tears, today he did not care to let out sobs or gasps, he was tired of being silent.
The pair of friends were huddled together, until the sound of the iron falling interrupted them.
-Hiccup? Oh my, are you hurt? Is everything okay?
It was Merida, her hair looked even more agitated than usual and she had an untied boot. What they heard was the girl’s huge sword that she had dropped to the ground as soon as she saw Hiccup hugging Toothless and rushed over to make sure they were okay.
-What are you doing up?
-I... couldn’t sleep and I heard you running away, I thought something would have attacked you, besides, I don’t know if your sense of direction is as bad as Corona’s and I didn’t want you to get lost here by yourself.
She finished scanning them and their agitated breathing began to stabilize, apparently no one had hurt them. However, she noticed his friend’s wet eyes and the dragon’s sad look.
-Oh Hiccup, do you need anything? I can give you some space, or listen to you or just stay with you without talking or-
-Stay. Please stay.
The boy wiped his face a little, sat on the edge of an overhanging rock and pointed the place to her. She sat and then turned to him:
-Do you... want to talk?
-I’m not sure, but I’d like to try.
-Whatever you need.
She smiled at him, and he returned the gesture. Toothless moved a little so that Merida could reach his head to scratch it. Hiccup took a deep breath:
-These days have left me exhausted, but today more than tired, I am... confused, I think, a little angry even. Meeting your mother after 20 years shouldn’t be so painful, I should be happy, all my life I was imagining what my life would have been like if she had been with me at Berk. I thought that would have made the days where I haven't met Toothless yet, well, easier. I never imagined there would be a life with her away from the island, and now I’m not sure what I would have preferred, or why I care so much to answer that question.
-How did you imagine your life with her before?
-Well... I don’t know, I think that more than having her with me, I needed someone to keep me company, anyone. I know it’s hard to believe, but I wasn’t always "Berk’s pride".
In the last sentence Hiccup made his voice deeper and bent his arms showing his thin biceps. "At least he still maintains his terrible sense of humor," she thought. Then the boy returned to his hunched pose, resting his elbows on his knees.
-I tried to fit in as much as I could with the other Vikings, to be strong and big like them, but as hard as I tried I could never, not quite. You know? For the last attack before we faced the red death, my father needed volunteers to go on an expedition to find the nest, and nobody wanted to go until he said that whoever stayed would have to take care of me. Of all the adults in the village, only Gobber, the old woman and a couple of farmers stayed on the island. Maybe they didn’t see me as a productive member of the community, and I was always screwing up, but they didn’t gave me a chance to prove otherwise either, they’re too stubborn to do something like that. Before I understood that dragons are not enemies, I was always to be equal to others, or not to get in the way. I was so lonely for so long.
Merida thought of her father, he taught her that she had potential, to develop it, she couldn't imagine what life could have been in the castle without him. However, the walls of the castle were very lonely as well, more so when her brothers were not yet born.
-And today, to see her, to know her a little... We are very similar, now I see that all of this-
He pointed at all of himself.
-Didn’t came out of nowhere. I think having her would have made me feel accompanied, understood. And the worst thing is that she saw Berk, she lived there, Gods! She was the head of the village! , she saw everything that was wrong about dragons, and she saw me, she knew I was not as strong as the rest because I came early to this world and almost died in the crib. Still, I don’t understand what made her think Berk was a good place to leave me all alone. And I know it’s unfair to say that, I had my father and Gobber, but being the Chief while grieving her, I wasn’t his only responsibility, since I was 7 he left me almost totally in charge of Gobber, and neither of them ever listens to me. I don’t understand how anyone can make that decision... But I’m willing to listen, maybe I don’t like what she'll say, but I think I need answers.
The boy turned to see his friend, and was surprised to see her gaze fixed on him, it seemed that she was about to release an arrow, one would think that that expression would be intimidating, but Hiccup had seen her frown the same way when Jack showed her the way, or when Rapunzel explained to her how they had solved the whole matter of her hair, the sun and the moon; she was simply paying attention to him, only that he had never seen her so determined (and so close). The boy felt the heat running down his face to his ears and looked down, he thanked for his tan skin and Odin who hid the sun so she wouldn't notice. Even now that he was used to being listened attentively by the entire village, he had never talked about that part of his life with anyone, not even Astrid, because it was not necessary, she had seen it with her own eyes.
-What about the blonde girl? I thought you and her... Well, you have a very strong connection, I thought she would have been with you since the beginning.
-You mean Astrid?
-She’s the only blonde girl in the group, Haddock, I doubt you can mistake her for Gobber.
The boy smiled slightly, she was right, and he really needed sleep.
-Oh, well, she became my friend thanks to Toothless, like everyone else, although our story is a little more complicated than that. I remember when we were barely 10 years old I used to go out and walk in the woods as far as I could, and once I got lost, that time I thought the rest of my life I would live among deer and rabbits, but she found me, told me "no Viking should be left behind", then took my hand, guided me through the forest showing me in detail what was the way back. By the time we saw the village again, she had my heart in her hands.
-You really are easy to impress, huh?
-Hey, that was the first time someone from the village care to help me. And the first time someone called me a 'Viking'.
-As you say, lover boy.
-Well, after that, it was about four years of absolutely nothing, at best she scolded me, saying that I had to take my place among others, take things seriously or try harder. Today I understand why she told me all those things, she was one of the few who had a little common sense, and it was always central to her the commitment to Berk and the community, without blind trust, of course. She was the first to trust me and Toothless, the first to know about him, and the first to support me in the fight against the red death. But it was only until that moment that she really saw me, that she regarded me as more than just another child in the village. And after the battle with the dragons ended, she... Well, she fell in love with me, and she didn’t know what to do with that, so she acted like nothing happened, and when I tried to get close to her, she would get me away, usually with hurtful words.
-How did you solve that? You look so close now...- She had the same eyes a kid has when the bedtime story gets too exciting.
-Actually, we fixed it because I exploded and asked for an explanation
-Did you have to explode to ask for an explanation?
-Huh, I guess so.
-And did you told each other how you felt?
-It sounds easier than it is, but yes, long story short we did. Now that we knew that we loved each other, it seemed pretty easy to fix everything, right? Well, we tried to be together for a while, but we realized that we wanted different things, she wanted to stay and I wanted to leave, and that what was good for us was just to support each other and that made our friendship even stronger, she would make sure I don't lose the floor and I would help her... Well, I’m not really sure, but she likes me a lot so I guess I have to do something right. She’s like my soul mate and she’s one of the most important people in my life.
-So you’re not together now?
-Nope, this guy is single. Why? You interested?
Hiccup arched an eyebrow and gave her a smirk. A very dumb one. Merida let out a chortle, although it really sounded far away from a normal laugh.
-Okay, I have experience with rejections, but you didn’t have to make fun of me like that.
Hiccup’s remark only made her laugh more, and instead of feeling offended, the laugh became contagious.
-I guess I have a bright future, I have found my mother, new friends, a mission, an opportunity to learn more about dragons... Maybe I didn’t get a girlfriend with a stunning Scottish accent, but whatever.
-If you keep making me laugh we’ll wake up the others.
-It seems that I touched a nerve.
-You have no idea.
-I could, if you'd like to tell me...
-I would like to, but I’m not sure this is the right timing, you are my priority right now.
There was silence for a moment, a warmer feeling in Hiccup's stomach.
-Gods, you have no idea how much I like to hear that.
Hiccup smiled at Merida, and this time she was the one who suddenly had her face as red as her hair. She didn’t thank anything nor anyone, she was well aware that even in the dark night her carmine face was evident.
-I’d like to say that to you more often, but if you’re going to get all sentimental every time I do, then I think I’ll keep it for special occasions only.
-Ha ha, how funny, even when you blush for my charms you take advantage of my vulnerability.
-You’re not as charming as you think, Haddock.
-Ouch, okay. Thanks for your consideration, but I think a distraction might help, let me listen to you for a while, would you?
Merida sighed, took her hands to her face, hoping the cold touch would help lower the temperature of her cheeks.
-Okay, I’ll tell you.
Hiccup got up, moving a little away from the edge, Toothless accompanied him and settled down so that the two friends could lie down on him and look at the stars. Merida understood and settled down on the side of Hiccup, arranged the blanket that Toothless had brought to cover them both.
-You see, a few years ago, my mother sent three letters to the lords of the allied houses, Macguffin, Dingwall and Macintosh. I had already reached the appropriate age to make the traditional games for the heirs of each house to fight for my hand in marriage.
-Wow, do they really do that in your village?
-I’ll get to that. And actually, we are a kingdom.
-Alright new-world girl, get on with your story.
-So, all my life I lived inside the castle, I only went out to ride Angus or for some lesson; I do not know how my mother expected me to be ready to marry when I had only had human contact with my family and the people who work in the castle; or maybe that’s the whole point. Anyway, back then, my mom and I had a terrible relationship, she wanted me to become this perfect princess, a symbol of righteousness and grace that is always at the service of all and whose life is limited to tending the castle and the lands. And I’ve never wanted that, I mean, now I understand why all the boring protocols I’ve been taught throughout my life are important, and why I'm important. But at the time my mother only thought that this was the only goal of my life and I thought that nothing that happened made sense.
-I think I would have thought the same as you.
-It was difficult not to do so when no one ever explains you the reason for something but force you to obey it.
-Touché.
-When the lords and their sons arrived, my mother explained the rules "Only the firstborn of each clan can compete for the hand of the princess of DunBroch", and well, I am the firstborn of my clan. And, according to tradition, the princess chooses the activity with which the clans compete.
-Let me guess, you chose archery
-Duh. Nonetheless, when I faced the clans to defend my hand I almost started a war. My mother was furious, we had a big fight and I thought that the only way to achieve what I wanted was by changing my mother so that the thought that bethrothing me to some lord was not necessary. I took Angus and I rode into the forest, we reached some very old stone steles, in my kingdom we say that those stones were placed by benevolent trolls, and that there they wrote instructions to control magic, as a symbol of peace between the men and the creatures of the forest. It’s a very important magic center. When I got there, the first thing I saw was a path of little blue fire-like creatures, what we call Will-o’-the-whisp, souls that decided to stay longer on earth to guide the living to their destiny. They took me to a witch’s cabin and I asked for an enchantment to change my mother, I wanted her to stop believing that marriage was a good idea, but when I came home and gave the enchantment to my mom, she turned into a bear. Once again I acted without knowing the consequences.
"Magic really is strong in DunBroch", he thought while trying to hide his amazed expression. At the same time, he remembered having an encounter with something very similar to this souls Merida described, but kept it to himself.
-Then I had to take her out of the castle, and try to find answers. Meanwhile, my mom and I had the opportunity to get to know each other a little better, she listened to me and I listened to her, or something like that, she was a bear, she couldn’t communicate with anything but gestures.
-That explains why it is so easy for you to understand Toothless.- he said, althoug he didn't mean it to be outloud. He scolded himself.
-You think so? Corona is also tactful with animals and this boy gets along very well with Jack.
She said as she scratched the dragon’s forehead, he seemed very comfortable and happy.- He relaxed a bit, he hadn't lied anyways.
-Yes, but you listen more calmly and do it more often, I think you are the only one who "converses" with him besides me. I would even say you're his second favorite, after me, of course.
Toothless turned a little to lick Merida’s face.
-Toothless, I told you that doesn’t come off! Stubborn, giant lizard. Wait, I have a handkerchief over here.
-Don’t worry, that's how you show affection, don’t you? oh, poor boy, the bad Viking mistreats you?
Toothless nodded, feigning a painful scream as Merida scratched his chin.
-Great, another rejection.
-What can I say?, everyone wants a little of me, you should get used to it.
-And here I thought that this trip would lead me to make more friends, not to lose those I already have.
-Do you want to keep listening to my story or are you going to keep feeling sorry for yourself?
-Please continue, at least I will know well who is leaving me alone in the world once more.
Merida rolled her eyes, but she contained laughter.
-Well, we went back to the witch’s cabin, and it turned out she left us a message, said we only had two days to undo the enchantment or my mother would become a bear forever, and just recited a couple of rhymes as a clue.
The girl cleared her throat a little and gave a more mystical tone to her voice:
-’Fate be changed, look inside. Mend the bond torn by pride.’
Hiccup felt chills, sometimes he forgets that Merida can have visions and recite prophecies, when the girl’s blue eyes became glassy, as if looking at something in the distance, while speaking in Gaelic.
-That was really creepy.
-I think you’re too soft.
-Oh come on, attacking me again. Better keep talking.
-As you wish. The point is that it didn’t really tell us anything, so we left, frustrated. Well, before that we made a couple of weird mixes with the jars the witch had left and almost destroyed the whole cabin.
-I think we should reconsider entrusting you with the spell...
-Haven’t you just say you wanted a chance to prove yourself despite your mistakes and-
-Okay, okay, I get it.
-Better. Then we were discouraged and nervous, but once again the will-o’-the-whisp guided us, this time towards the ruins of an old kingdom. That’s where I had my first vision. I touched a broken carved stone, and I saw a man become a bear in an ancient throne room. You see, my mother always told me the story of an ancient kingdom, the king divided the kingdom among his four sons before he died, but the elder was superb, and proclaimed himself the legitimate leader of all the land above his brothers, The war on those lands continued until my father and the lords united to defeat a common enemy. Remember when I told you how my father lost his leg?
-He was attacked by a bear called Mort
-Mor'du, but yes. It turned out that in all that time, the greedy son who faced his brothers became Mor'du, he wanted the strength of 10 men and asked the witch for the same enchantment as me. When I returned to the present and saw the broken stone, I understood what the witch told me: during the fight with my mother, I cut in half a tapestry that she was making, the whole family was in it, I sliced my sword right were my mother and I held hands. That tapestry had to be mended. Suddenly, in the shadows I saw a huge beast full of arrows that pierced his thick skin, a blind eye, and a black and ruffled fur that was advancing dangerously towards me. Without knowing it, we had entered Mor'du’s home. My mother and I ran and we managed to lose him. Now that we knew what to do, we went sneaking to the palace. Meanwhile, in the castle, things were getting tense, the lords wanted to know which clan I was going to marry. My father defended me every second...
Merida smiled slightly, remembering her father's courage.
-Before mending the tapestry we had to avoid a war, so I went to talk to the lords while my mother explained to me with signs what to say, and against all odds, my mother asked me to say to break with tradition and give me and the young heirs, the opportunity to follow our heart and find love in its time.
-That's hard to believe, amazing.
-I know, I wouldn't have expected it, I was honestly about to pick one of those three before my mother stopped me to give a precious speech about making our own decisions.
-Really? Which one were you going to choose?
Hiccup's eyes were mischievous. In less than a second, Merida’s face was boiling.
-It is not important.
-Oh, come on, I don’t even know them.
-Most likely you will.
-Even if I have the pleasure of meeting then, I promise not to tell anyone.
-Hiccup, I trust you, I’m not worried that you’ll tell them, I’m worried that you’ll know.
-All right, I won't insist further.
Until then she had not wanted to tell anyone, but Hiccup had entrusted her with a vulnerable part of his life. It wasn’t that she owed him anything, but she wanted things to be reciprocal, so she took a deep breath and let go:
-Macguffin, I would have chosen Macguffin.
Hiccup seemed surprised, but ventured to ask more.
-What is Macguffin like?
-Well, today I know he’s kind, altruistic, sensitive and a great friend, but at the time I would have chosen him more than anything because the other two guys didn’t show their best side, Macintosh had a terrifying outburst of anger when his shot wasn’t perfect, And Dingwall just looked distracted and you could tell miles away that he was only there to do a duty to his clan, at least Macguffin seemed interested in me and not in my title. Although if we’re strict, I should have been Lady Dingwall, he was the one who hit his the bullseye, even if it was mere coincidence.
-Merida Macguffin... It doesn’t sound so bad. They match.
The girl hid her face between her red curls, and spoke to Hiccup in a very faint voice.
-For Gods’ sake, Haddock.
The boy laughed.
-Come on, Merida, I’m just messing with you.
-I know...
-Why don’t you finish your story instead? I suppose you managed to break the spell.
The girl looked up at Hiccup, nodded and came out of her hiding.
-Fortunately, although it was not easy, the will-o'-the-wisp led me once again to the stones, they were about to kill my mother, I had to fight with my father, and if it was not enough trouble, Mor'du decided to go out to greet. My mother and the devil bear had a gruesome fight, but Mom got one of the stones to fall on him. When Mor'du stopped breathing, his soul came out of his body and gave us a little bow, before turning into a whisp himself; it seems he just needed someone to free him from the bear skin he got himself into. When it was all over, the sun began to shine, I hurried and covered my mother with the tapestry, begging the gods and fate not to be too late. And for a moment it was it, I saw my mother lose the white in her eyes and become just a creature of the forest, and I felt the weight of the world on me. I thought I had lost her forever, and it was my fault. There are still days when I have nightmares where I really lose her like that, where i loose her because I was selfish and stubborn.- He saw something in Merida, something he thougt impossible: fear, regret.
-That day, life gave me another chance, and my mother returned to her human form, just like my brothers. After all the fuss, my mother and I really changed, I took her lessons more seriously, and she was more patient with me. Now we both hear each other, and we understand each other, we’re closer than ever.- Merida was watching something beyond the sea in front o of them, her eyes full of love and pain at the same time. She was far from home.
-Despite everything, I wanted to learn more about magic, how to use it, stop it, and mold it as much as possible. So without telling my parents, I went to take lessons with the same witch who gave me the spell that time, I mean, she just gave me what I asked for, and I know some problems would have been avoided if she had explained in detail what was going to happen and how to undo the spell, but she’s the only one who knew magic in the whole kingdom, and being something so alive and so present in our lives, it seemed wrong not to know anything about it, even if in doing so, I hurt the relationship with my family... My parents didn’t want me to go near magic again, but being in DunBroch that’s impossible.
-I think I understand you, the dragons were also as present in our life as the sheep and we never stopped to think why they attacked us. We just took the war for granted.
-You know? The relic I’m trying to save on this mission belongs to one of the clans, blesses them with good harvests every day of the year, and we all rely heavily on those harvests during the winter, if I didn't have asked the witch for help, right now we wouldn’t know what to do, chaos would ensue and everyone in the kingdom would be dead by next spring. I honestly think we all make a great team, I’m sure we’re gonna make it. I know that even after we recover the magic of the relic, we have a lot ahead of us. You don’t know how grateful I am to everyone for helping us with this and trusting me.
Merida tried to hide a yawn, and failed. Hiccup sneered.
-Don’t you think I should have been the one bored by your story? Or doesn’t Her Majesty usually sleep late?
-My story was not boring, Haddock. And, just so you know, I sleep a lot, sometimes in the castle, it is necessary for my mother to take the triplets to bother me to get me out of bed. And between my unexpected insomnia, Toothless and this delicious blanket, I’m more comfortable than you’d expect to be out in the open at midnight.
Hiccup realized that he was also starting to feel heavy on his eyelids. Finally, he was resting.
-Sorry I woke you up and worried you, but i'm thankful that you did.
-Hey, we’re more than a team, okay? We’re friends. The day you need me and I’m not there for you is the day my heart stops beating, I promise.
He took a moment to see the stars shining on him, and then to Merida and the kind smile she had over him. There was something comfortable in her, and not just that, she was amazing in all kinds of aspects; he found himself mentally listing all of them.
-Well...- She looked nervious and her cheeks were light pink, maybe he stared at her a little too long- I think it's time for us to go back before we fall sleep here, don't you think?
-Yeah, sure, you're right.- He got up in a jump. -Let's go.- He extended his hand to help her get up, she took it.
-I'll take the blanket!- She said in a playful tone, and hurried to cover herself with the thick fabric.
-How considerate of you...- He looked at her like she was dressed in jewels and silk. Fortunately, Merida was already walking back and didn't noticed.
That morning Hiccup thought that he would have a broken heart for the rest of the trip at least, but as he saw her leave, he realized that he wasn't so sure anymore.

I watched Puss in Boots: the Last Wish, and I'm losing my mind at how DreamWorks does parallels and foreshadowing.
One of my favorite things about the first How to Train Your Dragon is how every part of the Red Death fight was set up beforehand. Fishlegs breaks down its strength and weaknesses, they confuse it with sound (which affects their dragons too! The writers didn't forget!), the twins annoy it. Toothless fires with that familiar night fury shriek that we haven't heard since the beginning of the movie. But the real payoffs are what comes next with Hiccup's plan.
Hiccup takes advantage of the storm clouds to make Toothles near invisible like when we first "see" him. He targets the Red Death's wings, which will be important in just a second. He gets Toothless to set the Red Death's own fire breath off inside it, which was set up by the Terrible Terror scene where he learns that dragons are "not so fireproof on the inside." He used the cloud cover to trick the Red Death into a steep dive, only pulling up at the last second. This puts immense strain on it's wings- as Hiccup learned after his mishap during his first real flight with Toothles- which, due to the holes from Toothless's previous barrage, totally shreds them. Unable to pull up, the Red Death hits the ground and explodes. Toothless's tail burns off, Hiccup can't steer, he gets knocked off, and they're both falling again, just like in the test flight. This time, Toothless is the one who goes to Hiccup, when before, it was the reverse.
And then the parallels that come after. Toothless saves Hiccup. Stoick echoes Hiccup's "I did this" over a downed Toothless. And of course, there's the scene where they show how Hiccup lost his leg on the same side that Toothless lost his tailfin, both injuries that they gave each other (Toothles most likely had to bite that leg to grab Hiccup before the fire hit), both injuries that brought them closer together.
And that's only examples related to the Red Death fight! To see this level of thought and care be put into the new Puss in Boots movie just has me really emotional. This is why I love DreamWorks. Noone else is doing it like them. It makes me so happy to see people put the same effort into picking apart The Last Wish as I did with HTTYD.

Hellooo! I have a quick question I haven’t been able to answer myself so I figured why not ask someone?
I need help choosing a name for a nightlight oc I’ve made. I’ve currently got nothing 💀. He’s your typical nightlight looking dragon (Mainly black body, the tips of his “ears” are white as well as his feet, nose, tips of tail, chest, and about half his wings) he also has blue-green eyes c: All he needs is a name now.
I’d appreciate the small favor!
oh i don't know if i'm the best to ask, the way i name my ocs doesn't seem to mesh well with the httyd world- but i'll give it a go!
i've noticed that nightlights seem to be named things like Chase, Twist, Flash, Zip- single words that have a more..."active" feel to them, though thats not always the case
also the white "points" on him kinda made me think of a more winter-y feel, like the lil guy just took a walk in the snow (not sure why that came to mind, but it did!) so perhaps something like flurry, snowstep, frost, winterwing- things like that
some others i've thought of are Echo, Drifter, Eclipse, Ice, Haze, Dusk, Flutter, Cloud and Whitewing!
