thinking about the parallels between the famous “I can take care of myself just fine.” // “No.” and these greek play quotes:
“I’ll take care of you.” // “It’s rotten work.” // “Not to me. Not if it’s you.” [Pylades and Orestes, Orestes, Anne Carson’s translation.]
“I fear to stain your clothes with blood.” // “Stain them. I don’t care.” [Theseus and Herakles, Grief Lessons: Four Plays by Euripides, Anne Carson]
“Let go of me.” // “Never.” [Eurydice and Orpheus, either from Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl, or Orpheus & Eurydice: A Verse Drama by Edward Eaton.]
like do Neil and Todd even know the tragedies they’re echoing????

“How will you remember?”
“That I love you?”
“Yes.”
“That’s easy. I can’t help it.”
Heaven Sent (2015) / Eurydice (2003)
Detailed image descriptions below cut.
First image description:
Twelve and Clara’s hands holding the neuro-block together. Yellow text reads “ORPHEUS: How will you remember?” There’s fragments of the Doctor Who episode script edited into the images: “CLARA (Eyes starting to fill): I don’t think I could ever forget you.” “THE DOCTOR: Clara. I don’t think you’re ever going to have to.” “CLARA: Doctor! Oh God, please, I’m sorry, Doctor!”
The Doctor looks at Clara, fending off an expression of hurt. He’s vulnerable, on the ground, looking up at her. Yellow text reads: “EURYDICE: That I love you?”
Clara’s crying. Yellow text reads: “ORPHEUS: Yes.”
Second image description:
The Doctor’s side profile as he speaks. Yellow text reads: “EURYDICE: That’s easy.” Fragment of script reads: “CLARA: What Clara told you in the Cloisters…” “THE DOCTOR: I don’t remember a thing about it.”
Clara’s turn to fend off the grief in her expression. She looks down to avoid the Doctor’s gaze, purses her lips. Script fragment reads: “THE DOCTOR: There’s one thing I know about her. Just one thing. If I met her again, I would absolutely know.”
Another fragment reads: “On Clara’s face – a look of such pain. No, he doesn’t know. Not at all.” Clara’s in focus in the background of the frame now, about to sneak away in the diner. But in the blurry foreground—the Doctor. He’s playing his guitar. Script fragment reads: “CLARA: You said memories become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs.” Yellow text reads: “EURYDICE: I can’t help it.”

put your feet in the river, and swim
Dear Callum’s future wife,
I’m going to say right now that this isn't for you. I don't want anyone else to have his love– I want it to be all mine, forever.
I should’ve known it would never be like that, though. We were doomed from the start, by whatever’s out there, so maybe you and him won’t be. You should only have to be doomed with one person.
It hurts to imagine him walking down lover’s lane with anyone but me– that's this path he took me on, with pink apple blossom petals on the ground and the sun setting through the leaves. It was its own little world with just us two.
But that's selfish. He deserves to love and move on and be happy, and if you are what gives him that, then I wish you all the best with every bit of my soul.
Callum is more than anyone could dream or wish for, and finding him will be like you are coming home for the first time. You must appreciate and know it every single day, every moment, with every fiber of your being.
So take care of him. And do it well, or I swear I’ll find you and I’ll kill you even if I’m already dead, because he can’t go through anything like what I did to him again.

Designs for Sarah Ruhl's Eurydice, opening in just a couple weeks!! The Stones and Hades make more sense in the context of the scenic design--we went for an upstairs/downstairs art deco corporate aesthetic for the Underworld. The haves and have-nots, the breakdown of language after death, and shapes and colors suggestive of both classical architecture and the all-important river.
Our production has two actors playing Eurydice on alternating nights, hence the two people in the Eurydice renderings.
All designs are my own, please don't use these without permission.

the world's wife was 99 and eurydice was 2004. whenever i read them together i think ruhl must have taken some cue from duffy consciously or not. (Not because of the very elementary "challenging the roles of women in world mythology" thing but because of the way Orpheus is characterized: as a god-touched scatterbrain who appears harmless and nonthreatening, swept away by his own music, but whose wife is doomed by his talent. prophet and lancer; jesus and judas—except when the lancer is a man, he is doomed as an ordinary person is doomed by a messiah. When she is a woman, she is doomed as a woman is doomed by a famous man, which is much worse because it's BORING)

worse than doom is boring doom that makes you into like a wax figurine of a beautiful eternal muse w/ nothing behind her eyes.

#i especially like ruhl's orpheus because he's. well. likeable#his idea of love is to transcribe eurydice the way he would transcribe like a nice tree or a bird#he's not Trying to freeze her into a parody of herself. but he does—and worse; millions of men over thousands of years#do it after him
